It was a quiet night in the sorority house. Most of the other girls had already left for their Christmas holidays back home. Girls had been filtering out of the house all week once they were all packed up and finished everything for school. The last being Alia, a very sweet freshman girl who had left only half an hour prior. The only ones that were left were Ava, Percy, Ellie and Bell. The four girls planned on staying around campus for the Christmas break, not that any of them had much they wanted to go home to anyways. They didn't mind staying behind though, they had each other for good company. They would all spend Christmas together and possibly have Bell's new boyfriend come visit and meet the rest of the girls. Plus they liked the idea of having the big old house all to themselves, which was something of a rarity if it happened at all. The girls had decided to have a relaxing night in together, except for Bell who was fast asleep upstairs in her bedroom. The other three girls sat in the living room chatting with mugs of hot cocoa and rum in their hands. The flames from the fireplace gave the surrounding walls a warm blush, heating up the entire house around them in contrast to the cold Canadian winter that lay just beyond the walls. Ava excused herself to the kitchen to check on the snack foods that were cooking for the girls to share.
Percy's rant about her beau was cut short by the phone ringing. Ellie and Percy gave each other startled looks. The sound of the phone ringing became something of a bad omen in this particular house. Not a whole lot of people called the house at all, if it was a partner of one of the girls they usually just came by. Most of the recent calls were coming from a disgusting perv who seemed to like getting his rocks off from calling and scaring them. They dubbed him as “the moaner” since his calls were always a bunch of  grunts and moans.
Both girls had their eyes stuck on the old landline at the bottom of the stairs. They felt as though the phone had eyes trained back on them and they were in a staring match with the hunk of plastic. Ava walked back into the room after the first few rings. She fiddled with her freshly dyed red and green hair uncomfortably in the doorway, staring where the other two girls were.
"Just let it ring." She hushed.
She wasn't sure why she was so quiet, it was as though the person on the other end of the line would be able to hear her if she spoke too loud. Ava took a few steps closer to the girls. She rested her hands on the back of the couch behind Ellie's head as she waited alongside them. The phone rang for a minute straight before it stopped. The three let out a shaky breath in unison. After a few seconds of silence the girls went back to their previous activities. Ava was only a few steps into the kitchen when the phone started ringing once again.
“Really!?” Ellie said in a high pitched voice, she let out a huge groan. They waited a few seconds before Ava sighed and walked over to the phone. “Ava no!” Ellie spoke again. “What if it's him?” Her voice was laced in worry.
“Well whoever it is they called twice, it might be important.” Ava said as she took the few remaining steps towards the landline and picked it up.
“Hello?” She answered.
A deep groan on the other end of the line answered her. She mentally cursed herself. It was him again. She looked towards the other girls and rolled her eyes. They sprung up from their spots on the couch and ran across the room to plant their feet next to her. As much as they hated the calls, a morbid curiosity took over them and as much as they hated to admit it they could be kind of humorous sometimes. The girls all looked at each other as a chorus of wailing screamed loudly through the receiver. They seemed to drift between wails of pain and pleasure.
“Pretty little piggy slut.” The voice was low and gravely.
Ava raised an eyebrow as she looked between Percy and Ellie. She covered the receiver.
“Wow!” she giggled. “Looks like Mr. Moans-a-lot is expanding his act!” Her comment made the other two giggle as it seemed to lighten the mood. In previous calls he wasn't much of a talker, usually just vulgar sounds. Another high pitched moan came through, she could tell it was the same guy but it was so high it almost sounded like a woman.
“Pretty… pink… cunt…let me lick it… lick it, lick it, lick it!” The girls all visibly cringed, this wasn’t funny anymore it was getting pretty gross.
“Let me lick your pretty little piggy cunt!” What followed was a cacophony of vile oinking sounds and a loud dark laugh.
Ava gasped. “You fucking creep!” She looked towards the other girls. Ellie had covered her mouth in shock, only moving her hands to whisper a harsh “hang up!” The voice continued to laugh before growling.
“I'm gonna shove my cock so deep inside your pretty pussy you’ll be screaming for me!” He started moaning again. Percy had to turn away from the phone call as Ava scoffed in disgust.
“Okay gross! Never call back here again or were calling the cops! We're done here!”
“Hang up on me you stupid slut and I'll slaughter you like the little piggy you are!”
The voice on the other end began to cackle, fluctuating between several octaves as if multiple people were in the room, but they could tell it was from one person. Ava panicked as she slammed the phone back down without a second thought. Her heart felt like it was going to stop from how fast it was beating, her chest hurt, she could barely breathe.
"That's new." Ellie whispered, she was shaking, they all were. The three girls looked at each other in a pregnant silence. Percy stepped closer to Ava and wrapped herself around the younger girls arm.
"Honey, come on, let's go sit back down. Don't let that creep ruin our night huh?" Percy pulled her in the direction of the living room as they wanted to resume the nice evening they were having. Ava nodded, her heartbeat finally started to slow and breath filled her lungs easier than before. They were barely a few steps away from the phone when it started ringing again. The sound startled them, making them all almost jump out of their skin. Ellie let out a small shriek and Percy being the protector she was instantly reached out to grab her hand. Ava was so startled she actually became angry. She felt it bubble up in her stomach and shoot up her spine. She stomped back over to the phone and picked up the receiver.
"Listen you little-!"
"I'm going to kill you." The voice was deep and monotone before the dial tone hung heavy in the air. Her muscles seemed to freeze in fear. The phone still clenched in her fist. The voice was low enough to where the other girls just barely heard it. They all stood in silence together, shaking and on the verge of tears. This had never happened before. Speaking was a completely new thing for this psychopath, but death threats? They never expected that. Any thoughts of the phone calls being a prank by another sorority or one of the frat houses went out the window. Percy was the first to break the silence.
“Well then...” Her voice was shaky, she was nervous but her protective instincts kicked in and she tried desperately not to show how she was truly feeling. She took the phone out of Ava’s hand and set it onto the table, she didn't even bother hanging it up. No more phone calls. She lightly guided Ava and Ellie into the living room and back onto the couch. The two girls sat directly next to each other, their knees pressed together as a way to help calm each other down. Percy draped herself over the back of the couch, wrapping her arms around Ava’s neck from behind.
"Should I call one of the guys over? Will that make you feel better?" Percy asked, trying to make them more comfortable. Ava shook her head.
"I don't wanna bug them, I'm pretty sure they're all busy."
"You wouldn't be bugging them!" Percy gave Ava a little squeeze. "In fact, I think they would be offended if we didn't call them at a time like this." Percy cracked a small smile in an attempt to lighten the mood. Ava hesitated for a moment before nodding.
"Okay, okay, but don't guilt trip them. It's late and I don't want to fuck up their night cause this prick is scaring the shit out of us." Percy kissed her on the head before nodding.
“Should we wake Bell up?” Ellie squeaked. Percy shook her head.
“No, let her sleep, she was up pretty early this morning.”
She got up and left Ava and Ellie sitting on the couch while she left to call around to see who was available for the night. A sniffle next to Ava made her eyes tilt up to see Ellie with tears in her eyes. She looked like she was trying not to cry as she shook, scared out of her mind. Ava felt bad for worrying the poor girl. She shouldn't have picked up the fucking phone, she felt like an idiot.
"Oh Ellie, it's okay, don't cry!" Ava scooted impossibly closer and rested her hands reassuringly on her thigh. Just saying the words were enough for the dam to break and tears flooded out with a choked sob. Ellie threw her arms around Ava's shoulders and curled up into her. She put her arms around the younger girl and lightly rocked her, telling her through hushed whispers that things were gonna be okay, even if she didn't believe it herself.
As Ellie's tears started to subside, Percy strode back in the room and sat on the armrest of the couch.
"Okay I just got off the phone with the frat house down the road." She clasped her hands together with a small smile. "Red said he'll be by in a little while and he'll sleep in your room with you tonight. Is that okay?" Ava breathed a sigh of relief as she closed her eyes and leaned back against the couch. Red was a sweetheart and he was one of the few men in that fraternity she trusted. She felt better knowing he would be with her throughout the night and she would feel even better once he got there.
Roughly twenty minutes later a loud knock came at the front door. Ava’s heart began to race until Percy opened the door and the voices of Red and Darrell echoed throughout the foyer. She peaked over the back of the couch trying to hopefully hear them better but she couldn't hear exactly what was being said. They spoke in hushed words for a moment until Red noticed a pair of green eyes on him. They had all been busy lately so it was nice to see them again. Ava smiled once they made eye contact. He beamed back with arms wide open, strutting into the living room.
“I heard that a certain little lady needed some Red tonight!” He laughed as Ava jumped over the back of the couch and into his arms.
“I missed you!” Ava squealed as his arms wrapped around her and squeezed tight.
“I missed ya too, Av!” He gripped her by the shoulders and held her at arm's length. Her hair was different since the last time he saw her. She went from bleach blonde to green and red, for Christmas of course. He ran his hand through her hair and lightly gripped a section of red hair before turning around to face Percy and Darrell who were chatting, pressing his temple to Ava’s.
“Look Blue! We match!” Darrell stopped his conversation with the raven haired girl and turned his attention to Red, who was pressed up against Ava with his tongue sticking out. Darrell smiled as a faint blush dusted his cheeks. “You two look real cute.”
The boys said their ‘hellos’ to all three girls before everyone except for Darrell and Percy converged in the living room. Red went through the girls collection of DVD’s before before getting comfy on the couch.
"You girls gonna be okay?" Darrell asked, turning to look at Percy questioningly.
The two looked over to where Ellie was curled up in the large armchair with a warm blanket and Ava was cuddled up with Red. His arms wrapped tightly around her as she was nestled in between his legs with her back against his chest as they watched whatever movie he had picked out.
"I think we'll be okay. We're just a bit shaken up is all, especially those two." Percy motioned to the other two girls. "I don't think anything bad is actually gonna happen, probably just a dumb prank." Darrell nodded at her words. They were both worried but they did their best not to show it.
"Wan’ me to stay too?" He asked, using his teeth to fidget with the ring in his lip.
"No!" Percy exclaimed. "I can't ask you to do that! Besides, Skulk is probably waiting for you back home." She gave him a sly smile as he looked down at his feet, a crimson blush crept up his neck. A small smile began to mimic hers. Darrel gave a hushed “well okay then” before stepping towards the door before he paused.
“Actually, can I grab some coffee or somethin’ for the walk back? It's freezin’ out there.” He chuckled.
“Of course!.” Percy answered as she started walking towards the kitchen, Darrell followed closely behind. “Or we made some spiked hot chocolate if you're interested?” He nodded with a smile.
“Sounds perfect, thank you.”
Darrell leaned against the counter top while Percy rummaged around one of the cabinets for one of her travel mugs, she settled on her matte black one. She raised the bag of mini marshmallows on the counter and gave them a shake as a silent question of want. Darrell nodded.
“Bo was askin’ aboutcha yknow.” A smirk danced along Darrell's lips. Percy rolled her eyes, she was still waiting for that southern dumb ass to apologize for the fight he started.
“Oh god, what did he say this time?”
“Jus’ that he feels like an idiot.”
“Yeah well he should, he was being a total prick… and if he truly feels that way why hasn't he apologized to me yet?” Darrell shrugged. “Well you know how Bo can be.” Percy shrugged with an eye roll while she poured some rum into the travel mug followed by a hefty ladle of hot chocolate from a pot on the stove. The conversation caught the attention of the three in the living room as they peered over to listen in. Percy caught Bo being a bit flirty with one of the freshmen girls and they were having a huge fight. The guy was real sweet on his lady but still couldn't seem to ditch that typical frat boy attitude.
“An’ don't be alarmed if he shows up here sometime soon.” Darrell said as she put a handful of mini marshmallows in the mug.
“What makes you think he's gonna come here? The tool can't even pick up the phone and call me.”
“I heard him on the phone with Maggie this afternoon.”
Percy rolled her eyes once again with a huff as the two made their way into the living room. She tightly screwed the lid on the travel mug and handed it to him.
“Bo hasn't apologized yet?” Ava piped up. Percy and Darrell hadn't known their conversation was being listened to until now, they both turned their attention towards her. The older woman adjusted her glasses as she stepped towards the couch, leaning down against it.
“Don't you worry about it honey, you've got enough on your plate as it is.” She ruffled Ava’s hair as she walked Darrell to the door. The girls and Red shouted out loving goodbyes before he made his way back home in the thick snow.
While Ellie, Ava and Red were getting settled in, and Percy was making Darrell his hot chocolate to prepare him for his trek home, a stranger silently made his way into the house. Climbing up the lattice Ellie had so lovingly placed for her plants, and crawled through the unlocked attic window. Crawling out of the attic he heard the familiar voice of the little piggy bitch who hung up on him earlier. He crept towards the stairs and looked down, seeing two unfamiliar men with his girls made him seethe with rage. A snore from down the hall quickly diverted his attention. The man slowly tiptoed to the room the snoring was coming from and cracked the door open, peering in. A girl with bright pink hair lay fast asleep in her bed. He couldn't help but giggle at the colour.
“Pretty piggy.” He thought to himself.
He made his way inside and shut the door behind him. Once his eyes adjusted to the dark he made his way to stand at the end of Bell's bed. Looming over her sleeping figure like a predator sizing up his prey. His hand slowly reached out to grasp a belt that was hanging around the post at the end of her bed frame… The nightmare had begun, and it began with a silent scream.

Connor and the Brat {Part 17}
Tumblr media
Brat should’ve known Connor would show up right at 7, he obviously wasn’t happy she had gone to Ava’s the night before. She should have just had her stuff packed and ready to go by the time he got there but she had forgotten to set an alarm and was still sleeping when he arrived which started the whole Connor and Ava apocalypse. Connor screaming at Ava that Brat should have been ready because she needed structure after being in the psych ward, Ava screaming back that Brat wasn’t an actual child and she could sleep in past 7am on a Saturday. She hurriedly dressed and gathered her things together before all but dragging Connor at the front door and thanking both Ava and Sarah for having her over the night before.
“You didn’t have to be such a dick to them.” Brat watched as Connor didn’t say anything but his grip on the steering wheel tightened. “Ava was just trying to be nice and you came in and acted like a-“
“A what Brat? Someone who was concerned about you? Did you even remember that you had your first IOP appointment today and if you miss it you’ll go back to the ward?” No Connor she hadn’t remembered that but you still didn’t have to be such an ass just because you didn’t get your way last night. She sighed and turned to look at the window, it wasn’t fun pushing his buttons anymore because all he did was get angry with her, he used to think her sassiness was funny and now he just berated her.
“Who the hell schedules a therapy appointment for 8 in the morning anyway?” She grumbled under her breath and saw a small smile make its way to his face, oh great he was taking joy in her grumpiness, served her right she supposed.
“You did apparently, better wake up buttercup because we have a full day after therapy.” Connor parked in the faculty parking lot and walked along side her watching carefully for either Olivia or Ellis as they made their way to the ward. He found both of them at the nurses station chatting with Maggie who looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there, her face lit up when she saw both Brat and Connor.
“Ravenna! How are you feeling sweetheart?” Maggie rushed from behind the control station and Brat about fell over from the force of Maggie running into her but Connor was quick to catch her. “April and I talked with a Connor about going to lunch one day but he seems to have a tight leash on you.” Brat ignored the raise eyebrow for Maggie and the eye rolls of Ellis and Olivia behind her. Brat smiled and hugged Maggie back before stepping away.
“I think he just wants me to stick with a routine, I spent the night with Ava and Sarah last night so it’ll probably be a few days before I have anymore company. I’m still trying to get settled in.” Connor excused the both of them and he dropped her off at the door promising to be right there when her session was over.
It wasn’t as bad as Brat had originally thought it would be, it was a whole new group of people that than ones she had been housed with. Some of them had been in the ward the same time she had but most had already gone to IOP and they were much more welcoming that the floor staff had been. No one pressured Brat to talk but she did vaguely mention she had a traumatic childhood and how Connor had taken to being her personal attack dog. A few of the staff raised their eyebrows but no one said anything and soon enough the 3 hour session was over and Brat promised that she would be back for the next one on Wednesday.
“Was it as bad as you thought it would be?” True to his word Connor was sitting in the waiting area with snacks for her when she walked out the door. She shook her head and reached for one of the bags of sugar cookies and Connor couldn’t help but laugh that she would go straight for the cookies even though she hadn’t had breakfast or lunch since they had been in such a hurry this morning.
“So what else do we have to do today?” Brat asked around a mouthful of cookie but honestly it probably sounded something like CNAICHSKSNDJE Connor looked both ways before pulling out into the Main Street and driving towards the shopping plaza. Oh no.
“We have lunch with my sister, and you are going to find yourself something wear.” Brat looked down self consciously at her outfit, she had a feeling that Claire Rhodes probably wasn’t eating lunch somewhere where you could wear ripped skinny jeans and a crop top sweater. Brats cheeks flushed and Connor patted her knee reassuringly. “She’s not bad, a little overly excited but she just wants to meet you since I sprung the news on her.” Brat nodded and followed behind Connor as he walked into the store, he sat down in one of the comfortable chairs and then it hit Brat.
“Um Connor? I don’t exactly have my purse with me.” He chuckled quietly.
“That’s because Claire is paying for your dress she insisted upon it.” Brat was about to argue back but after looking at the price tags she decided maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to let someone buy the dress for her.
“Is this like something fancy or more Sunday brunch?” Connor was looking through some men’s fashion magazine now and he stopped to think about it.
“Definitely brunch, Claire won’t bust out the dramatic restaurants until the third meeting.” Brat grabbed a few dresses and went into the changing rooms but quickly became discouraged when she noted that her chest had grown since gaining weight and none of them fit her chest while also fitting her waist. She heard a gentle rapping on the door. “Brat you about done? We’re supposed to meet Claire at 2:30.” Brat looked around the dressing room and saw she had one more dress, please lord just let it fit.
Tumblr media
Brat felt pretty and classy without feeling like she had overdone herself so she smiled at her reflection in the mirror and opened the dressing room door just as Connor was about to knock again. “Well? How do I look?” She was really starting to doubt her decision because all he was doing was staring at her and she wondered if maybe the Rhodes siblings were used to more fancy brunches and she was just doomed to look severely under dressed compared to them.
“You look very pretty Brat, maroon is your color and I’m guessing it’s your favorite.” She smiled up at him and went to change out of her clothes while Connor went to tell the sales woman to put everything on Claire’s tab. The ride home to get ready was silent but only because there was a sense of urgency, they had an hour to get ready and be at the brunch place which would take about 35 minutes to get to. Brat went off in her room to change while Connor did the same with his. She decided she would just leave her hair be because she didn’t have enough time to do both her hair and makeup today and her waves were tame-able enough. She changed into her dress and boots before quickly running her fingers through her hair and reaching for her makeup bag.
Tumblr media
Connor was already waiting for her scrolling aimlessly through his phone when he looked up and smiled at her. “You look wonderful Brat, I don’t think I’ve seen you wear makeup before.” She blushed and looked down at her feet.
“Thank you, it’s my job. Well it was my job before-“ Her eyes started to water and she shook her head, it wouldn’t do to be crying and have all her hard work running down her face.
“Before I forget.” Connor murmured handing her the phone she had originally thought was his. “You need a way to get ahold of people, I went ahead and put everyone’s numbers in there. I didn’t see a number for your mom on file so..” Brat shook her head, there was no reason for them to talk anymore, she was an adult and hadn’t seen her mother in years. It was then she noticed Connor’s contact name: Daddy 😂😂 Brat couldn’t help but laugh at that. She looked over at him and noticed they were almost perfectly matching themselves.
Tumblr media
“Alright Brat let’s get you to Claire before someone else accuses me of hogging you to myself.”

I always imagine Maggie x Odin will be one of those ship that they always getting into argument and won't admit it that they like each other. Kind of like you see in a old 90s anime.
△Maggie and Odin□ - Dating life
They totally bicker 100% of the time but they get along from the most part. Their arguments would be mundane, and petty. Both parties are prideful and argumentative but they'd ever intentionally hurt one another's feelings. If either of them got the sense that they did, they'd do everything to make it up to them!
They have a very chill relationship. Maggie is very into romance - her love language being physical displays of affection - and she always complains that Odin doesn’t woo her enough. Odin calls her dramatic and rolls his eyes at her, but then he gets her flowers, or plays for her on his piano – she doesn’t quite like classical music, but she can make an exception for Odin’s piano playing. Sometimes she'll find drawing of her in his notebook and she'd ask to model for him. He agrees to shut her up but he does genuinely love drawing her.
Meanwhile, Maggie is a ride or die. You pick on Odin, you get strung up on a very high branch. She once put Olai in a tree choke hold for making fun of Odin's stutter, and Odin damn near dropped the "L" word. I think they're the perfect balance of ying and yang that you wouldn't expect them to work so well as a couple but somehow they do.
TLDR: Outsider’s will see them and think they dislike each other but really they’re an like an old married couple.
Feel free to send an s/o x [character] or OTP request.

i keep seeing people in their late teens/early twenties having a "[X] content intended for younger audiences does not feel satisfying to me anymore but i don't know where to start to branch out into adult fiction" moment and i thought i would give some recommendations for adult fiction for my fellow creepy crawly queer people. all or at least a LOT of it will be on the darker and more fucked up side bc i primarily engage with horror and thriller media personally but feel free to add on with more or recommendations from other genres :)
edit: i am continuing to add to this list so there might be new recs (highlighted in pink) in here every once in a while! also want to add that there's a variety of POC, queer, and disabled authors in here as well, i am also all of the above (asian, bi/aro, poly, disabled) and tried to incorporate as many of their wickedly talented, compelling narratives as possible. that's all, happy reading!

Conner and Sarah fake dating for the holidays for x reason. But it becomes a little too real.
For the advent writing calendar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See, it started like this, Connor needed someone to go to the annual hospital charity event with him to get his father off of his back after the fallout with Robin and because Sarah was the only one single at the moment, Ava offered her up. It was one event, Sarah didn’t mind. In fact, the brunette probably owed him one. For everything he did for Robert. (The fact that he was a psychopath notwithstanding.) Then one event turned into two and two, three. You see where she was going with this. Until Sarah looked up and she was four months deep into fake dating Connor Rhodes.
Sarah didn’t mind though. She wasn’t trying to date right now anyway and Connor kept everyone who hit on her away because the whole hospital, except for a few friends, thought they were together. As evidenced by Dr. Bardovi’s subtle mean-girl act last week when Sarah and Connor had been eating lunch in the cafeteria.
So that brought them to now, where she was leaning against the nurse’s station, as she bickered with everyone’s favorite charge nurse.
“You worked last Christmas, Sarah.” Maggie shook her head as she sorted files and handed them off to various doctors and nurses. “You shouldn’t be on the roster to work this year. It’s a year-on, year-off basis. You know this.”
The brunette sighed and she continued writing her notes on a surgical psych evaluation. “It usually is. But I volunteer to work it every year so someone who actually celebrates it can be with their families.”
“Who actually celebrates it?” Maggie raised an incredulous eyebrow at her friend, “Sarah, you love Christmas! I’ve seen you the day after Thanksgiving practically with bells on and positively floating through the day! Even before Thanksgiving now that I think about it.”
Another holiday she offered to work every year.
But the charge nurse wasn’t wrong. Sarah loved Christmas and celebrated it all season long. Though admittedly with the Robert situation, it was certainly more subdued this year. But wasn’t it ironic that a person who absolutely adored Christmas didn’t have anyone to spend it with?
Sarah shrugged while a smile that looked more like a grimace overtook her lips. “I’m just saying, I don’t have anyone to spend the holiday with because I don’t speak to my mother, I haven’t since I told her I went into psychiatry over two years ago. Not that I ever spent it with her, to begin with. So I volunteer to work because what else am I going to do on that day? Why not give it to someone who has a family to spend it with?”
“But you could’ve had someone to spend it with if you told us. You know that if Will, Ethan, April, Ava, or I had known you were by yourself every Christmas, we would’ve offered for you to come with one of us to our celebrations.” Maggie argued, before the ED phone rang. An incoming trauma, which meant Connor rushed to meet the paramedics to take the case, before Maggie could assign it.
It had been a slow day for him and Connor didn't idle well. Her cheeks warmed when he caught her eye and winked as he ran. Her friend caught the movement and nodded in the direction of the surgeon. “What is he doing for Christmas?”
“Spending it with his dad and sister.” Sarah shrugged her shoulders. Maggie raised an eyebrow, “And you’re not spending it with him because?”
“I didn’t want to intrude. And you know why that’s not exactly an option anyway because he and I aren’t actually together.” Sarah said, because Maggie was one of those few who knew it was all fake.
Just like the charge nurse knew how Connor looked at Sarah when he thought the brunette wasn’t looking. It may have started out fake but Maggie was willing to bet that’s not how he felt now. The brunette continued shaking her head, “Besides, I’m fine. I celebrate during the month and that’s enough.”
It wasn’t fine though and it was sad that her friend thought or pretended like it was. The charge nurse pursed her lips together before she offered, “At least, come with me to my-”
“Maggie, no. Christmas is a family holiday and I don’t want any of your family to feel bad when I don’t have any gifts because you brought an extra person. I’m fine.”
[LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK] [LINE BREAK]
She was in the cafeteria line with a thought of splurging on another peppermint mocha, when strong arms snaked around her waist and drew her in close. Sarah tensed briefly before the warm citrus scent filled her nose. Then she relaxed in his grasp.
“Getting lunch?” he mused quietly in her ear. She squirmed slightly at the fuzzy feeling that ran down her spine and made her shiver at his words.
“No, I was thinking about another peppermint mocha.” She told him and was met with a disapproving look, “What exactly have you eaten today?”
“Pro-”
“And don’t you say just those protein bars you’re so fond of. They aren’t big enough to sustain you all day.” Connor shook his head at her. Before the brunette could say anything, the line was moving and his hand was placed on the small of her back to propel her forwards gently.
After ordering her peppermint mocha, in addition to a coffee for Connor and two wraps, one vegetarian and the other chicken, (that Connor wouldn’t let her pay for and waved away any of her attempts of trying to pay him back)  fake boyfriend led them to a table. While she picked and munched on pieces of tortilla, Connor sipped on his own coffee and watched her.
“What?” Sarah finally asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had nowhere to go for Christmas? That you work every year because of it and spend it by yourself?”
“Maggie,” she grumbled more to herself than anything as she shook her head. Then she shrugged and told him quietly, “Because I didn’t want to intrude on anyone. Or anybody’s Christmas.”
“Can you get out of it?” He asked, shaking his head.
“I’m not sure. I’d have to talk to Ms. Goodwin. Why?”
“Because I’m making plans and it would be better if you didn’t work that day.”
“Connor, I’m fine-”
“Sarah, you’re not spending another holiday by yourself. Especially not one you love so much. Not when you have me.”
But she didn’t have him, not really.

Choices Flash Fic week 31
Hey all!!  ❤️
Because we've both been out of the game so long, and have really missed writing, my good friend (she was actually my very FIRST friend on this hellsite 😋❤️) @walkerismychoice and I have decided to motivate each other by writing together using our LI's and MC's from different choices books.  I'll be using Drake Walker and my MC, Ava Matheson from TRR, and Maggie will be using Bryce Lahela and her MC, Charlie Hawkins from Open Heart.
This story will hopefully be the first of a weekly series of one-shots using @choicesflashfics prompts.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it! ❤️
Prompt 3  — “Wait a second. Pause and rewind … what did you just say?”
Book: TRR/OPH
Pairings: Drake x Ava, Bryce x Charlie
Rating: M
TW: Gun Violence
Tumblr media
“Little Blossom?”
Ava’s eyes flew open.
She was momentarily disoriented, caught somewhere between a memory and a nightmare. But as her eyes focused and she took in the institutional green walls and naugahyde seating of a hospital waiting room, the crushing reality of the evening’s events came flooding back.
***
Ava! Get down!”
Drake’s warning was the last thing she heard before his body slammed into hers, knocking her to the ground.  She screamed as a bomb exploded nearby, raining chunks of rubble down all around them as the acrid smell of gunfire burned her nostrils.
“Drake?” She cried, “Drake, we have to get out of here!
He didn’t move.
“Drake!“  Ava began to panic as she felt the warm, sticky dampness of his blood seep into her ballgown. She reached out to press her hand to his cheek and his eyelids fluttered open for just a moment.  He gave her a small smile.
“I love you, Matheson.” He mumbled faintly as his eyes closed once again.
“NO!  Drake, wake up!  Please, baby.  I need you to wake up!”  She tried to wiggle out from underneath him, but the weight of his body was too much for her.
HELP!” She screamed, praying that her cries were loud enough to be heard over the chaos around them,  “PLEASE! … SOMEBODY HELP US!”
After what felt like an eternity, she felt Drake’s weight lifted from her body.  She immediately scrambled to her knees crawling on all fours to where he lay prone on the ballroom floor, his suit soaked with blood.
“Oh my God!” She gasped, “Drake!”
Bastien was kneeling over him, both hands pressed over a wound in Drake's shoulder as he barked out orders. “I NEED A MEDIC AND AN UNMARKED CAR…NOW!”
“Bastien! What’s going on?”  Tears streamed down Ava’s face as she grabbed Drake’s hand, alarmed by how cold it felt.
“Terrorist attack.  Drake took a bullet.”
Ava looked to Bastien for reassurance, “But…he’s going to be okay, right?”
He wouldn’t meet her eyes.
“Bastien! Tell me he’s going to be okay.” She begged, “Please!”
He finally looked up, and the expression on his face made Ava’s blood run cold.
“The wound is close to his heart and he’s lost a lot of blood.” Bastien’s voice was somber, “If we can get him to the hospital quickly, he might have a chance.”
“Might?” Ava pressed a hand over her mouth and felt her stomach lurch.
No!  This can’t be happening.  We were finally going to start our lives together. I can’t lose him now.
***
Maxwell knelt down beside the chair Ava had finally collapsed into after pacing the hospital corridors for hours.  He placed his hand over hers and squeezed gently.  “There’s a nurse here who wants to talk to you.”
Heart hammering in her chest, Ava jumped to her feet, ignoring the pain of her own injuries as she anxiously faced the young nurse standing in the doorway.
“Is he okay?” She asked, “Is he out of surgery?  Can I see him?”
The nurse smiled kindly, the rapid-fire questions not phasing her in the least.
“Mr. Walker is still in surgery…”
When Ava’s face crumpled, the nurse crossed the room to place a comforting hand on her arm, “But he has one of our top surgeons working on him, so rest assured, he’s in the best possible hands.”  She smiled warmly, “In fact, Dr. Lehela wanted me to let you know that Mr. Walker is out of the woods.  The bullet has been removed and they’re just cleaning out the remaining debris.  There was some concern about bone fragments splintering off and causing damage to the surrounding heart tissue, but that doesn't appear to have been the case.”
Ava felt her legs go weak with relief.
“Oh, Thank God.”
She felt Maxwell’s arms encircle her and sank wearily into his comforting embrace.
“See, Blossom.” He said, encouragingly, “I told you he was going to be okay. It’ll take more than a tiny little bullet to take him out.”
Ava nodded and squeezed Max’s hand without breaking eye contact with the nurse.
“How much longer do you think it’ll be before I can see him?”
“Once he’s out of surgery, he’ll go to recovery." She replied with a comforting smile.  "It’s hard to say how long he’ll be there, as everyone comes out of anesthesia differently, but a conservative estimate would be another hour or two.  Then he’ll be settled into a room and can receive visitors.”
Ava nodded and swiped at the tears which were once again sliding down her cheeks.  But this time, they were tears of relief.
“Thank you.”
The nurse smiled.  “Of course.  I’ll come get you when I have his room assignment.”
Ava thanked her again.
Drake was going to be okay.  Liam had been unharmed in the attack and Bastien and Kiara came away with only minor injuries.  Somehow they’d all survived.
Suddenly Ava’s stomach growled…LOUDLY.
Maxwell laughed.  “Okay, now that we know Drake is okay…it’s time to take care of YOU.”
Ava began to protest but Maxwell was already propelling her toward the door. “No more excuses!  You need food, or at the very least some coffee, or you’ll find yourself in a hospital bed of your own.  Now MOVE!”
Maxwell was wearing his stubborn expression, so Ava knew resistance was futile.
She let him lead her down to the Cafeteria. “I’ll go back up to the waiting room and let you know immediately if I hear anything from the doctors.”
“Thank you.” Ava replied weekly before walking through the cafeteria doors and meandering aimlessly towards the various food offerings.
—--
Charlie checked the time on her Apple watch. Wow, a whole 30 minutes for lunch today, she thought. Typically she was lucky to get half of that. Nobody ever told her the life of a hospital internist would be glamorous, but she still hadn’t been prepared for how tired and hungry she’d be so much of the time. Although they bill residency as a training program for your selected specialty, Charlie swore it was also meant to be a boot camp that only the strong survived. Only one more year and she’d have some semblance of a normal schedule as an attending physician.
“Coffee. Must have coffee first.” Charlie mumbled to herself, taking in the aroma of freshly brewed beans as she marched towards the machines only to be stopped in her tracks by someone hovering in front of them. Charlie went left, but then the woman went left. Then she tried to go right, but the woman shuffled to the right. Her patience running thin, Charlie spoke up. “Excuse me, could I sneak in here?”
“I’m sorry.” The woman spun to face her, and Charlie’s irritation melted away. The woman looked sad and tired for sure, but that was not an uncommon sight for visitors of the hospital cafeteria. There was something about her that drew Charlie in and made her want to comfort the woman. Maybe it was the fact that Charlie could see a little bit of herself in her - definitely not the flawless deep olive skin tone and dark hair, wildly contrasting with Charlie’s strawberry blonde locks and accompanying creamy white skin, but they appeared about the same age, and there was just something there that made them alike. Although Charlie was not prone to striking up friendships with hospital visitors, something told Charlie this was a connection she should make.
“Let me buy you a coffee.” Charlie offered.
The woman looked Charlie up and down, seemingly noting Charlie’s white coat and ID badge. “No, that’s okay. You can just go first. I have no idea what I want.”
“Please, I insist. Free coffee is one of the few perks I get for devoting my life to this place.” They both laughed and Charlie saw the first little spark of life return to the woman’s eyes.
Charlie grabbed two prepackaged sandwiches to go with the coffees and brought them over to the woman who had already seated herself at a cafeteria table.
"Thank you so much…" she glanced at the ID badge again, "....Dr. Hawkins. "I was too much of a wreck to even pick out something to eat. I'm sure you're busy, but would you care to join me?"
Again, it wasn't typical of Charlie to hang out with random hospital guests, but she knew this woman needed a friend right now, and maybe that feeling was mutual. "Sure, I still have about 20 more minutes." Charlie sat down. "But you can call me Charlie."
"Well thank you again, Charlie, I'm Ava."
"Nice to meet you, Ava." Charlie hesitated for a moment before asking, "If it's not too forward, do you want to talk about your loved one here that's got you so worried?... Only if you want to talk about it."
Ava's facial expression grew somber once again. She took a deep breath before letting everything spill out - getting invited to Cordonia on a whim to compete for the future King's heart, fate stepping in when she fell for his best friend Drake instead, and all the political drama and everything leading up to the events that brought her to this particular hospital cafeteria. Despite the tears streaming down Ava’s face, the air about her felt a little bit lighter.
"I'm sorry." Charlie squeezed Ava’s hand from across the table. "This must be so scary for you, but Edenbrook is a great hospital. I'm sure Drake is in great hands. Do you know who his surgeon is? I probably know them or at least know of them.”
Ava pursed her lips in concentration. “Dr, La-....hala? I think it’s something like that.”
Charlie smirked. “Young, kind of surfer boy-esque, and cocky as all hell because he knows how good-looking he is?”
Ava laughed nervously. “Yeah, that sounds like him. Please tell me he’s also a good surgeon.”
“Dr. Lahela can be kind of cocky bastard at times, but I love him. And yes, he’s a great surgeon, and I’m not just saying that because I’m biased.”
“Wait…” Ava seemed to be putting the pieces together. “You like love, love him? Are you two-”
“Yes, Bryce is my boyfriend. I might not have been so complimentary about his other characteristics otherwise.”
They both devolved into laughter until Ava spoke up again. “I like your sense of humor. Sounds like you need it to put up with him, just like me with my….Drake.” Ava quiets for a moment and then asks, “So I take it you two met here at Edenbrook?”
“Well, that’s a funny story.” Charlie wondered if she really wanted to get into this with a relative stranger, but Ava had already shared so much and could probably use the distraction anyway. “We actually met at a strip club, and believe it or not, Bryce was a stripper.”
Ava’s eyes opened wide. “Wait a second. Pause and rewind … what did you just say?”
Charlie inhaled deeply. “Okay, I don’t have a ton of time left on my break, so I’ll give you the condensed version. My med school friends dragged me out to a strip club to celebrate after we graduated. I was in a funk because I’d been recently dumped by the douchebag I thought I was going to marry and to top it off, I was set to be in my awful cousin’s weeklong wedding extravaganza and was in no mood to be questioned about the whereabouts of my plus one. Said friends paid for a private lap dance for me. In my drunken state, I got the bright idea to hire the stripper to be my fake boyfriend for the wedding. Somewhere along the way, fake boyfriend turned into real love interest. I learned he wasn’t just a stripper but had worked his way through med school and was about to hang up his banana hammocks to start his residency. As fate would have it, we’d both matched at Edenbrook and two years later, here we are.”
“Woah. And I thought mine and Drake’s relationship had an unconventional start.” Ava peeked down at her phone on the table. “I’m definitely going to need the feature-length presentation of this story another time, but my friend Maxwell just texted that Drake’s out of surgery!”
“That’s great news!” Charlie got up with Ava and walked out to the elevators with her. “I’ll walk you back up there since I’m headed that way.
Little did either of them know that this chance meeting would be the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

Old Flames Can Still Burn You | Part 2
Fandom: Chicago Med / Chicago PD
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader
Genre: Angst, drama, romance
Warnings: Descriptions of past domestic abuse, emotional manipulation, blackmail, panic attacks, self-harm (punching), brief mention of vomit, blood
Word Count: 4593
Prompt From @afro-hispwriter: Ava Bekker is from Reader's past, now together with Jay Halstead they must face the return of everything Reader wanted to escape from.
This is Part 2 - Part 1
-
Entering the ED with Jay, you are immediately the target of worried looks from Natalie, April and Will. Connor had presumably been called back to CT as he wasn’t supposed to be on the trauma service today. With Jay still by your side, you approach Maggie who is already heading in your direction.
“You feeling better now, sweetheart?” She asks, concern etched on her face but seemingly not trying to probe further.
You knew you might have to explain, but for now, you give your Charge Nurse a grateful smile.
“Yeah, I am Maggie, thank you. I’m sorry for disappearing for so long.” You feel guilt pang within you, that old haunting feeling of Ava disrupting your work-life was lurking in the shadows.
“Hey, none of that. It’s alright, we all need a moment sometimes.” She reaches out to squeeze your arm softly, turning to Jay with a teasing smile. “Where did she find you, Mr Halstead? Didn’t see you come into the ED today.”
Jay lets out a small laugh, shaking his head, Maggie missed absolutely nothing on her turf. “I was taking a witness statement up in paediatrics, bumped into Y/N, literally, as I was leaving.”
Maggie nods, “Well, I am very glad you were there, Jay.” She gestures her thumb behind her to Will, Natalie and April who are pretending to be busy with charts on the computers. Maggie turns to you, patting your arm again, “I’ve had those three on my case for the past half hour, please get them to simmer down?”
You roll your eyes, nodding with a small smile. It was fair enough that they needed an explanation, you had up and zoomed away from the lunch table without another word.
“I got this, Mags. Thanks. I promise I’ll tell you more later, alright?”
"Sure, hon. Whenever you're ready." She gives you an understanding look, before being called into action by an ambo arriving at the doors.
You watch her go and turn back to Jay who's got a tickled smile on his face.
"What?" Your brows furrow as your boyfriend points behind you.
You turn to see that now the trio was reduced to one. Will is still looking at you half with worry, half with impatience, whereas Natalie and April had been called in to assist by Maggie. You roll your eyes at the redhead, your own amusement creeping into your expression. You knew Will was just being protective and a good friend.
"Was your brother always this nosey?" You quip to your boyfriend.
"Oh yeah, that's why I became a cop, to stop him from snooping and getting in trouble." Jay smiles wryly, and you giggle.
"That sounds about right." You exhale, "Come on, then, let's go tell your brother the coveted gossip."
Your laughter fades slightly, the reality of having to share your past was no amusing matter. It held this fear that it would change people's perceptions of you, you knew your friends weren’t that unkind and yet it still made you nervous.
Jay becomes more serious as he catches on to the shift in your mood, and his hand returns to your back as you head towards Will. Knowing you'd have to update the others when they were free again.
-
You make it to the end of your shift well enough, a concerted effort had been made to push your anxieties and paranoia about Ava aside. You even managed to tell Natalie, April and Maggie with the result being very pissed-off friends and one determined boyfriend who were now committed to being vigilant on your behalf.
After multiple attempts to get him to go back to work, Jay had finally been reassured enough to return to the 21st so he could finish the progress on his current case. He had also made a promise to get in touch with the relevant unit within the CPD to get some kind of file or case started on Ava - even if the notable events had happened internationally, it would still be a significant start to make note of a cause for concern and monitoring.
The only person left on your mind was Connor, you had been worried ever since you returned to the ED after lunch. You fretted that he might think he had done something wrong, or that you were upset with him. Despite plans to text or call him once you were home, it was fortuitous that as you were walking in the parking lot, you spotted Connor heading to his car too.
"Connor!" You call out, walking with haste towards the surgeon as he spun on the spot to face you.
You come to stop in front of him, a slightly embarrassed smile on your face. But Connor's face is one of worry, "Hey, you alright? I didn't see you again after lunch, I thought you'd gone home. I'm sorry I didn't try and track you down, it was a total wall of procedures for the rest of the day."
You scoff, waving away his apology immediately. "Connor, seriously, you don't have to be sorry for doing your job. I'm sorry I ghosted you, I just... Well, first and foremost, nothing you did was wrong, okay?"
Connor nods, remaining silent to hear what you had to say.
“So, um, to be blunt... the reason I reacted the way I did at lunch is that I do know Ava from Groote Schuur. She and I were in a relationship, and uh, well, that ended up being…abusive for me.”
You could see Connor’s eyes show surprise at first, then darken with anger, he rests a hand on your shoulder. “Y/N, I had no idea you were so connected...God, I’m so sorry, I’m sorry that you went through that… is that why you came back to Chicago?”
You nod, feeling your whole body grow even colder in the parking lot. It felt somehow more raw telling Connor, you supposed it was because he had a day-to-day working relationship with Ava now. That 1-step removed proximity to someone who had so viciously uprooted your life was making your body tense.
“Mentally, it became intolerable and I picked up bad coping mechanisms that were not great for me physically either. So I ended up finding the courage to just wait for the right time when she was at a conference and leave, with the help of my department head they found me a spot back home here at Med. The higher-ups at Groote Schuur couldn’t afford their reputation to be tarnished by one of their most celebrated new talents being amidst a scandal, it was easier to just help me leave.” You sigh, laughing quietly in the strangeness of being open about everything after so long.
You can tell Connor is pissed off, and you partially wonder if telling him was a mistake, you didn’t want to kickstart animosity between him and Ava, that would surely only cause trouble for him and you - you certainly knew how Ava could be if she caught on to your resistance to her.
However, in your soul you knew it was the right thing to do, he should know to watch his back around Ava and you shouldn’t have to sugar coat anything to spare the drama, you had to keep sight of the fact that Chicago was your home, not hers.
“You don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to, but I want to be there for you. Maybe you, Jay and I could go for a drink at Molly’s tomorrow? I want to know how I can help you face this.”
You let the words sink in for a moment before you're wrapping your arms around Connor in a tight hug, “You are a good friend, Connor Rhodes. I would really like to have a drink with you and get you up to speed, I know Jay could use some R&R too.”
“That’s settled then, I’ll text you.” He smiles at you, you can tell it’s one of affection and not pity, and that sits better in your gut. Feeling more empowered now than you had all day.
“I’ll round up some more of the troops if you like, it’s been too long since we hung out outside of work.”
“Great, I’ll see you tomorrow, Y/N, have a good night.” He gives you one last squeeze before you let him head to his car and you turn to go back to yours, a gentle bloom of hope creeping into your chest.
Texting Jay about tomorrow’s meetup at Molly’s, you let him know you’re on your way home and that you would take care of dinner. It was more than likely he wouldn’t beat you to the apartment and you wanted him to have something besides coffee and a half-eaten sandwich to sustain himself.
Pulling out of your space, you start to head towards the ramp that would take you to the exit from Med towards the busy streets of the city. You slow as you approach the exit lane to let someone across the parking lot, it was dark and you couldn’t really see who it was until they were right in front of the windscreen. Under the glow of the lights above the security barrier, the floodgates of dread reopened when you made eye contact with her, she had been concealed by her scarf and her hat before, but once her eyes met yours the eluding nature of Ava’s return became concrete fact.
Smug lips upturned, eyes full of calculating coldness, she waves at you and then keeps walking towards the parking lot. You’re frozen in the car as the engine runs, limbs heavy with adrenaline, staring ahead at the now lifted barrier. It's not until headlights begin shining through your back window to indicate someone else was trying to leave that you manage to snap out of it and move. With a shuddered breath you put the car back into gear and turn out onto the street away from the hospital, nervously checking the mirror with each passing street to make sure nobody was following you.
You couldn’t wait to be in the safety of your apartment and in Jay’s company.
-
The fact that you got home without incident seemed like a miracle to you, each car that stayed with you a little too long automatically became a threat that you would try to shake off by detouring a few streets over. It had got to the point where you were about ready to pull over and call Jay, but somehow you had kept it together long enough to finish the journey.
Even when you had parked and gone to the front doors of your apartment complex you had collected your mail from the row of secure boxes for your floor, and then proceeded to do several laps of the ground floor before feeling certain you were alone and able to take the elevator to your and Jay's apartment.
Rubbing at tired eyes you fished your keys from your bag and gave one last cursory glance back down the hall before letting yourself in. Immediately you turn on your heels to slide all three locks on the door over and tug at the door just in case the locks somehow magically slid back by themselves and left you vulnerable.
With a long inhale and equally long exhale you try and shake out the tension in your body, rolling your head from side to side to get the ache to leave. Rifling through the mail you had a few bills, there was some kind of insurance letter for Jay, a few bits of junk mail and another letter addressed to you.
This one was different.
The envelope was expensive, the quality you had seen before. The handwriting was recognisable, and the seal on the back was stamped with a Springbok, the national animal of South Africa. Once you had seen the animal, it was the nail to the coffin.
"No....No, no fucking way." Your voice is raised to the emptiness of the apartment, the sensation of bugs skittering over your skin. You felt like sending your fist through the drywall as you hastily sliced open the envelope.
[Missed you, sweetheart. I'm here now, I owe you an apology for not being more present at home, everything's going to get better again. Don't be a stranger, let’s have drinks with your friends.]
The crisp cream-coloured card with the neat cursive didn't need to be signed for you to know the sender. You felt yourself gag, the rage and the distress clawed their way through your throat and you let your legs carry you in a panic to the bathroom, knees hitting the tiled floor harshly as you emptied the contents of your stomach into the toilet. Intense pressure throbbed through the back of your skull into your eyes, the pain making you let out a groaned wail as you dry heaved over the toilet. Nose running and eyes watering you fell back against the glass shower panel, garbled sobs turning your breathing into stuttered gasps.
“Fuck you!” You tried to yell to the nothingness as your anger and sadness rolled within you. How could she know where you lived? How could she know about Jay? Did she deliver the letter in person? So many thoughts raced through your mind, your body trembling. “Just fuck off!” You yell to the bathroom ceiling, taking a swing at the porcelain column of the sink and feel the brute force of your knuckles hitting the solid material, it aches perfectly and you do it again, enjoying the release it gives you.
This is exactly what you had steered yourself away from in South Africa, the compulsion to hurt physically to distract from your mental distress. You repeat the process 5, 6 more times until your hand matches the throbbing of your head, you snatch the letter with bleeding split skin staining the card, and toss it across the room out into the hall. Clenching your fist hard you feel the burn of bruised knuckles as your hitched breaths turn into a laboured rhythm, trying to bring yourself back under control. The outburst and the long day behind you have you exhausted, you slant into a lying down position, staring at the white tiles in disbelief.
-
It’s after 8pm when Jay finally gets to the front door, with a relieved sigh he turns the key in the door, happy to finally be home to you. It’s with a confused grunt that he tries to push the door, only to find that all three deadbolts are secure. Something that only really happened at bedtime or when Jay was away.
Checking his messages he sees that there’s nothing from you, not since you had told him you were leaving the hospital. No confirmation of arriving home, and no heads up about the latches. A worry forms in the pit of his stomach, it was unusual for you not to confirm you were home and waiting for him, but he rationalises that you could just be distracted given today’s revelations. So he presses your name on the screen and waits for the ring.
From behind the front door, he can hear the faint sounds of the ringtone you had just for him, but no sign of movement from you, at all. He calls again, figuring maybe you fell asleep or were in the shower. After the third ring, he’s about ready to call the fire department and get someone to break the door. That is until he hears footsteps and each of the deadbolts being slid back across to open.
On the last deadbolt, he pockets his key and waits for you to open the door.
He's about to ask a myriad of questions, yet the sight that greets him is almost as frightening as what he had imagined he would find once the fire department had got him in.
You looked like a shadow of yourself, the smile you offered your boyfriend was everything but. It was more of a pained grimace and Jay could see why, your hand hung limply by your side. It was now hues of red and purple, dried blood streaking all over your hand down to your wrist, eyes bloodshot from crying. Jay immediately shuts the door, re-latches everything and discards his weapon into the safety box as quickly as possible.
“Jesus, sweetheart, what-” But Jay doesn’t get the chance to finish, as he turns back to you he can see you shaking your head in a pleading manner.
“Please, Jay…not yet.” Your voice is barely a murmur, hoarse and croaked from the yelling. He nods, still glancing at your hand, he wouldn’t let that go untreated for very long, but for now, he compromises and silently guides you to sit on the sofa.
He knows you’ll give him answers eventually, but it’s clear that right now you’re not going to say very much as you sink into his embrace, not caring for your hand in the least as you wrap yourself around him, climbing into his lap and holding him tight, your face buried into his neck as fresh hot tears soak his shirt.
“I’m right here, Y/N. You’re not alone. I got you, baby.” Jay lets his voice lull you out of your skittish state, you inhale his aftershave and seek his warmth, trying to burn the thought of her out of your mind for even a few minutes. Your hand stings and throbs, your eyes are sore, and every part of you aches, but you just push it all away in favour of Jay’s embrace. An arm wraps securely around you as the other carefully rubs up and down your back, rocking you slightly as he lets you get it all out.

It’s another 20 minutes by Jay’s reckoning until you speak again, he thought you’d fallen asleep until your quiet voice grabs him out of his own worried trance.
You pull back from Jay’s neck, finally looking him in the eyes as you use your better hand to stroke his face, he smiles softly, eyes still awash with concern. You swallow, sighing, eyes shutting for a moment as you find the words to explain what the hell Jay had come home to.
“She sent a letter here…or delivered it, I’m not sure. Not totally unlikely considering she apparently knows where we are. She saw me in the parking lot too, probably timed it just right so she would cross paths with me. She waved…she had this smugness on her face and I was just frozen as though I’d literally seen a ghost passing in front of me.”
Jay had been mentally building a case against Ava before he got home and now, with anger ticking up by the second, he was ready to unleash the fury of charges against her. It was unsettling to see how thoroughly she had wrecked your equilibrium, you had done so much work to feel in control again, to allow yourself to feel respected and loved in your relationship with Jay - it killed him to think that some of that had been deconstructed again.
Jay knew your heart, he knew how determined you were to not let this woman back into your life, to hold your ground, but he also knew how difficult that could be when the past came snooping back around, so brazenly at that.
“I want to see that letter… did she sign it? Leave anything that would indicate it is  actually her?”
A look passes across your face, you knew you were feeling defensive right now. However, Jay could read your expression easily enough, he moves a hand to your cheek, gently focusing your eyes on his.
“Y/N, I believe you, it’s alright. Of course, I know it’s her, but we need to start flagging concrete evidence points, things that have her name or other identifiers on them. I hate how it’s made you feel, baby, but the fact that she’s already playing games? That’s stupid and it’s also good for us, it means she’s gonna slip up the more she seeks that attention and bite back, and that’s when we’re going to nail her ass.”
Jay soothes his thumb over your temple, pressing a kiss to your forehead, and you make a noise of contentment. You sigh, he was right, of course. No matter how badly you wanted Ava to disappear, she wasn't going to, so it was better to have every shred of ammunition possible.
“Sorry, I’m just on edge. You’re right, it’s good that she’s chosen this way, makes it easier to get pissed and fight back. And I am gonna fight her at every turn, Jay. I lost my shit today, but I won’t let her do that to me again.”
The melancholy sat in your chest, but with Jay back home and a chance to talk it out, you were feeling levels better than you had when you got home, and after you'd let Jay in.
The layers of fog were starting to dissipate once more, which meant your headache and hand were coming back with full force.
“Ow.” You groan, smiling sheepishly at Jay who shakes his head in a teasing yet chastising manner.
“Can we sort that hand out now, please? Even I can tell it’s messed up. And your face says that your head is trying to split in two.”
“So perceptive, Detective.” You tease lightly, taking a deep breath when you realise just how queasy you feel, you never finished lunch and you hadn’t had dinner either.
Jay raises his eyebrows, silently asking if you were going to let him take care of you and not be a total doctor cliche.
"I'll let you take care of me, only if I take on the task of calling in the takeout." Your lips are upturned, trying to suppress your giggle.
Your boyfriend smirks, kissing your forehead again. “Deal. We’ll get your hand elevated, get a compress for that and your head, and find you some painkillers. You don’t think it’s broken do you?” Jay gestures to your hand and you shake your head,
“Not broken, just messed up.” You smile apologetically, quoting his description back to him.
“Okay.” Jay lets out a relieved breath, he hated seeing you hurt.
You hum, nuzzling into his neck for a moment, letting out a comforted sigh,
"Ready?" He asks softly, happy to help you in any way required.
You nod, shifting so you can climb off of him, "I'm ready."
Jay helps you stand, mindful of your hand as he helps you towards the bathroom where he could clean you up properly. You felt guilty for not making dinner, and for causing Jay such a panic.
"Jay, I'm really sorry for worrying you, and I'm so sorry about dinner..."
He glances at you as he makes sure not to knock you as he shuts the toilet lid and sits you down. “Hey, don’t even go there, alright? It hasn't even been 24 hours since this all kicked off, cut yourself some slack. We’re gonna get rid of those aches, get you in some pyjamas, eat takeout and cuddle until we’re just one snuggled blob on the couch. We're taking each day as it comes, and I don't want to hear apologies for something you haven't done.”
You lean up from your sitting position, trying to tug him down so you could kiss him softly. "Okay... I love you."
He hums as your lips press to his, "I love you, never doubt it."
Then his nose wrinkles but you can see him try to recover and act as if nothing was wrong. You're confused for a moment and then you stare horrified, realising the problem.
"Oh my god, Jay. I can't believe I just kissed you with my goddamn gross mouth...."
There's a blush on his cheeks as he realises he wasn't good at covering his reaction, he didn't want you to feel self-conscious about feeling unwell.
He gently cups your face, shaking his head. "Y/N, it's not a big deal. Let's brush some teeth and crack open the mouthwash, hm, then I want to kiss you over and over and over and-"
You're laughing now, properly, covering your face in embarrassment but also giddiness at how good Jay Halstead was.
"Mouthwash shots it is, line 'em up, bartender."
"You got it, ma'am." Jay puts on an accent that has you laughing more, making a face at the use of 'ma'am', he knew you hated how formal that sounded.
He teases his way through helping you feel more refreshed and taking care of whatever ailments you had, it felt like no issue nor any time at all and before you knew it you were tucked under Jay's arm with your head on his chest, occasionally leaning up for sweet kisses as you started to doze in front of the TV.
-
Around midnight Jay gently rouses you so he can get you to bed, your hand was now secure to your chest in a sling, trying to get the swelling to go down and to avoid it being jostled in the night.
With bleary eyes and an adorable yawn, according to your boyfriend, you wobble under Jay’s guiding hands to the bedroom. He carefully helps you get tucked in as he sets more painkillers and some water on the bedside table, he kisses your forehead and you crack an eye open,
“You got another case?” You ask sleepily,
Jay shakes his head, “No it’s okay, I’m just gonna check in with Voight about something, and then I’ll be right back, I promise.”
You gently caress Jay’s forearm, eyes rapidly losing the fight against sleep once more,
“M’kay, don’t stay up too long, you need rest too and…I wan-want my pillow. L’ve y’...” Jay smiles as you don’t quite finish your sentence, he kisses your forehead again as he straightens back up,
“Love you too, baby.”
-
Jay potters around the apartment, tidying away the takeout boxes and washing up your dishes. He makes sure everything is locked securely and picks up a few stray items of clothing, odd bits and bobs that need putting away.
He then comes to a standstill in front of the bloodied card and envelope that had since been sealed in a freezer bag and left on the kitchen table, he began studying it from the outside of its confines. Jay’s jaw clenched, it really wasn’t much to go on seeing as the letter wouldn’t be considered threatening and Ava had been diligent to leave no kind of identifier on either the envelope or the card. The envelope wasn’t stamped with a real stamp either, Jay supposed you had been too rattled to realise that the stamp was one of those vintage fake stamps you could get for scrapbooking. This meant Ava had delivered the card personally, which for some reason made Jay’s blood boil that little bit more.
He wondered how she had got the address, the obvious answer being she had somehow gone to HR and wrangled personal records, somebody there had been stupid enough to let her snoop or even worse give her the information directly.
It wasn’t much to use yet, but Jay was damn sure he was going to have plenty by the end of this, and he wasn’t going to miss his chance to make Ava Bekker regret ever coming near you again.

Connor and the Brat {Part 6}
A/N: And Brats name will be…Ravenna 🖤 Also, Ava is going to find this out before Connor how do we think we will feel about this? I loved the idea of Ava and Connor platonically I feel like when they started a relationship in the show it was just doomed from the start so they will stay platonic. I always saw Ava swinging both ways and one of my crack ships is Ava/Sarah so that will probably be the pairing. Also might have some slight Ava/Ravenna undertones but will ultimately be Connor/Ravenna.
Tumblr media
It had been two weeks since Connor had seen Brat, and not for lack of trying on his part. He had gone up every day at all her meal time just o show he was still there for her only to be sent away by Sarah. Sarah also wasn’t too happy with him given that Brat had told her about the little showdown they had had in her room. So while she did give him information she did it reluctantly, feeling a sense of responsibility to her patient and not wanting to upset her. Brat was doing much better after that incident two weeks ago and as of today would be allowed 8 hour passes, all that means is someone who the team and Brat both approve of can take her out of the hospital for 8 hours and do things around the city but she has to be back by 10 pm. Connor had tried asking Sarah if he could be one to take Brat out for the day and Sarah had told him that while Brat was no longer angry with him she wasn’t ready to be alone with him yet, that someone else was taking her out for the day.
“Stop pouting Connor it’s unbecoming on you.” He turned to his left and saw Ava in her casual clothes and her done. He furrowed his eyebrows wondering why she would be all dressed up and in the hospital on her day off.
“I didn’t realize we had a miss doctors beauty pageant going on today.” Ava rolled her eyes and requested the visitor check in sheet from Maggie making sure to move it just out of Connors eyeline so he couldn’t see who she was visiting today.
“I didn’t dress up for you Dr. Rhodes, I’m here for Ravenna.” Before he could ask who Ravenna was he drew in a breath at seeing Brat get off the elevator with Sarah. She was wearing a long sleeved burnt orange dress that went all the way down to her ankles and some brown boots along with a jean jacket seeing as how it wasn’t too cold yet but she probably needed something more than just long sleeves. It looked like Sarah had helped her with her hair seeing as how patients weren’t allowed to use hot tools themselves but could have staff help them her long brown hair was curled and half up half down. That’s when it hit him, Brat was Ravenna. Brats name was Ravenna Scott.
”You’re staring at me.” And indeed he was because Ava gave him a harsh elbow to the gut and he quickly regained some sense of not being a creeper. She didn’t sound nor look angry at seeing him but the usual excitement was gone from her voice, he was just another doctor to her now and he didn’t know if he would rather her be angry or indifferent towards him.
“You look very pretty, I hear you’re able to go in day passes now.” Eesh, when did small talk become so awkward between them? Maybe when you decided to victim blame her Connor he accosted himself.
“Ava is taking me around the city of Chicago, I hadn’t lived here long before I well…ended up here.” That was interesting what could have made her want to completely uproot her life and come to Chicago of all places? Had someone close to her stepfather been bothering her? Awkward silence settled among the four of them before Ava announced she was going to get the car and Sarah was needed back upstairs leaving just the two of them alone. “You came back everyday, even after I told you not to.”
“I didn’t know what would make you more angry Brat, I just wanted you to know I was there for you.” She gave a small smile and shook her head at him.
“I wasn’t angry anymore, I was embarrassed with how I had acted. And then I realized that maybe I was too dependent on you and I need to branch out more. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see you, I just wanted a chance to make other friends.” She wasn’t angry with him anymore, she hadn’t been angry for a long time, a sudden weight was lifted off of Connors chest.
“Does this mean you’ll let me come visit you again? Maybe take you out on your next day pass?” She giggled a little bit but nodded, he thought she looked so much prettier when she laughed.
“you’ll have to share time with everyone else down here too though. Maggie, April, Will and Natalie have all visited me over the past two weeks and have asked to come visit me more. And I can only have one visitor a day.” Connors eyes grew wide he didn’t know anyone else even knew about Brat, why hadn’t anyone told him she wasn’t angry with him anymore.
“And Ava has come to see you and is taking you on a trip.” She shrugged her shoulders and he could see a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
“She’s pretty but I think she likes Dr. Reese and is taking me out as a favor to her.” Did Brat have a little crush on Ava? She was his brat first and Ava would have to make do with Sarah. Speak of the devil and she shall appear Ava came back and asked Brat if she was ready to go. Brat walked on ahead of her and Ava tugged on his scrubs so he would bend down to her level.
“Don’t scare her off again, mind your business unless she asks you to get involved. She doesn’t need a knight in shinning armor Connor she needs stability.”

Happier Than Ever - Connor Rhodes, Will Halstead (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Summary: Reader finally ends a shitty relationship with Connor. Will has always been the one picking up the pieces! …just roll with it! 😅
Paring: Connor Rhodes x Reader, eventually Will Halstead x Reader
Warnings: Angst on Connor’s part, cute fluff on Will’s
To be in a relationship with the Connor Rhodes is something most girls could only dream of and somehow for you it had become a reality. Only the reality, that was once sunshine and rainbows, was quickly slipping away and returning to bite you in the ass.
What began as the perfect relationship was crumbling before you. At the beginning Connor would take you out for lavish dates and surprise you with expensive gifts, anytime outside of work was spent together and it always used to make you smile when Maggie would pair you together to work on a patient. Now you barely spent anytime together, in fact you barely saw him at all. You understood and was fully accepting of his choice to become a cardio thoracic surgeon, completely aware that would take more of his time but it had got to a point where you felt all but forgotten. Evenings together turned into evenings of non-stop arguing that ended with Connor storming out, leaving you feeling like the bad guy until an expensive bouquet of flowers appeared outside your door or at the nurses station at work.
The situation became even harder to ignore when Dr Ava Bekker joined Dr Latham’s team alongside Connor. You hadn’t let yourself get stuck in that hole but there were signs you couldn’t ignore because eventually you got the proof that proved your suspicions was correct and of course once Doris knew the whole ED was aware. As soon as Will found out he dropped everything and left to find you, signing his remaining patients for the day over to Ethan before heading to his car and making his way to your apartment. You didn’t even stop to change as you stormed into the doctors lounge and smacked the code into your locker before scooping out your keys and phone and heading straight to your car. How you managed to make it home alive was anyones guess, barely being able to see the road in front of you through the tears and even once you had got home those tears showed no sign of stopping, your heart leaping into your throat at the knock at the door.
“Y/N it’s me?” You were relieved to hear Will’s voice on the other side, fully expecting it to be Connor trying to worm his way out of it by making excuses. “Can I come in?”
“Thank god it’s you!” Your voice was still shaky from crying as you opened the door, Will’s heart sinking at the state Connor had put you in, still in your scrubs from work while your eyes were already becoming bloodshot along with your puffy tear stained cheeks.
“Oh Y/N!” Will looked at you sadly as he dropped his bag to the side and pulled you into his chest, one hand squeezing you as tightly as he could while the other cradled the back of your head, swaying you gently as you sobbed. “I came as soon as I found out what he did!”
“Found out or saw?” You mumbled against him.
“Maggie told me, you know once Doris knows something it’s not longer a secret!” Will explained with a soft chuckle. “Come on, let’s get you out of those scrubs!”
Gently taking you by the shoulders, Will directed you to your bedroom as you sat on the end of the bed while he fetched you some comfier clothes from your dresser.
“Here.” He smiled as he placed the sweater and leggings beside you. “I’ll be just out there if you need me!”
“Thank you Will!” You tried to smile although your watery eyes gave you away.
“You know I’m always here if you need me!” Will replied softly as he gently rubbed your shoulder, this wasn’t the first time he had come to the rescue nor the second. The worse your situation with Connor had gotten the more Will would keep an eye out. He hated what Connor was doing to you and always wished he’d said something at lot earlier but you had begged him not too, begged him to stay out of it as it would only end in you and him being accused of what you now knew Connor was guilty off.
Will had often wished he’d stepped in and swept you away before Connor had even got a chance to lay his eyes on you, you didn’t deserve any of this, to be treated like you were nothing and it tore Will apart. He was skeptical of your relationship with Connor from the start, not trusting a man born into that much wealth to think with his heart but of course everything seemed fine at the start, you were happy and to Will that’s all that ever mattered.
While Will waited for you to return he took the chance to change out of his own scrubs, he too had grabbed everything and left as soon as he found out what Connor had done and hadn’t thought twice about changing his clothes. Once into something clean he made his way to the kitchenette to find something quick and easy to make the two of you for dinner, a little startled when you came out rustling in a nearby drawer and slamming it shut after finding what you need.
When you didn’t return after a little while Will decided to knock on the bedroom door you had shut yourself behind.
“Y/N?” Will called your name softly as he turned the handle to let himself in, walking in to see you frantically throwing anything that belonged to Connor in a trash bag. “What’s going on?”
“Will I’m done!” You paused to take a breath, between the crying and frantic moving around you could barely breathe. “He’s out!”
“Ok?” Will was trying not smile, trying not to let his own feelings for you get too much in the way, that was the last thing you needed. “Well I’m gonna make you something to eat, call me if you need anything!”
“I know what you’re thinking, that I should’ve done this a lot sooner!” You cried. “But it’s never been that easy!”
“Hey hey I know!” Will cooed as he walked round to you, holding you close to his chest as you broke down once again. “I’d never tell you what you should and shouldn’t do but I have always said you were happier without him!”
“I should’ve listened to you before, saved myself months of being miserable!” You sniffed as Will pulled back to look at your face.
“Hey you did what you thought was right, none of this is in anyway your fault!” Will held your face in his hands as he spoke, gently wiping your tears away with his thumbs. “Connor’s the monster here not you!”
“He’ll turn up at the door at any moment and try to argue his way out of it!” You took a deep breath as you tried to compose yourself. “If he hasn’t tried to buy me back first!”
“Well you’re not gonna let him!” Will carefully moved the hair that was sticking to your face from your tears out of your face. “When he does turn up throw his stuff out in the hallway and tell him it’s over!”
“He’ll go mad when he sees you!”
“Then let him, he’s the one that’s guilty!”
“Yeah but I’ll be the one left feeling guilty!” You began to sob again.
“That’s why I’m staying right by your side!” Will smiled. “I’m not leaving you alone with him again!”
“Thank you!” You sniffed as you heard the loud and angry knock of Connor outside the door. “Oh god!”
You can do this!” Will rubbed you arm reassuringly. “I know you can!”
You took one last deep breath before grabbing the trash bag of Connors belongings from the bed and heading towards the door. Opening it without a word and throwing the bag straight at Connor.
“Y/N what’s…” Before Connor could finish you cut in.
“It’s over!” You said in one shaky breath, not even able to fully look at him.
“What do you mean it’s over?” Connor almost laughed at the words. “Can we at least talk?”
“I’m done talking Connor!” You sniffed. “How many times have we been in this situation and yet nothing changes, you don’t care about me anymore and I don’t think you ever did!”
“Of course I care?” Connor replied as if you had just said something stupid stepping forward into your apartment, not immediately noticing Will’s presence. “What ever made your think I… of course Will’s here!”
“Don’t you dare!” You scowled, your voice lowering in warning against the accusations you knew were about to fly your way. “You’ve barely been home for months, I hardly see you and the only time we do see each other it’s spent arguing!”
“I don’t understand what you want me to do?” Connor started to snap back. “We’ve talked things out before and been ok?”
“Are you really that blind? No we haven’t!” You were right on the end of your tether and moments away from fully letting rip. “If ‘fine’ is you trying to buy me back with some expensive gift and making me feel guilty?”
“You’ve never mentioned any of this before?”
“Because what’s the point? You never listen, you’re too wrapped up in work and that goddamn hybrid OR to even remember I exist!”
“That’s not true!” Connor went to step forward sensing Will moving on the couch behind you. “Does he have to be here?”
“He is the one that’s actually been there for me, the one who cleans up your messes!” You were now smiling as you went on to tell Connor how Will had been doing the things he should’ve been. “Unlike you he actually cares!”
“So what’s not to make me think you’ve been sleeping with him?” Connor spat as Will made to move.
“Will don’t!” You turned to the red head as he backed off.
“Well?” Connor stood waiting for an answer.
“I’d never stoop that low because I loved you!” You almost squared up to Connor. “Who do think you are to make comments like that when I saw you with Ava in that damn hybrid OR!”
“I…I didn’t …it was a mistake?” Connor began to stutter, trying to think of a quick excuse for his crappy actions.
“Don’t waste your time! Nothing you say will work!” You sighed as Will stepped a little closer to you.
“Can this ginger prick please leave?” Connor’s anger started to turn towards Will.
“Yeah that’s not happening!” Will almost smiled, angering Connor more.
“I asked him to stay because I knew you’d be like this!” You growled. “The only person that needs to leave is you!”
“Why?” Connor said with a smirk that made both you and Will want to punch it right off his face.
“Because you’ve done nothing but ignore me and reel me in by using your money!” You shouted. “And then you cheated on me with the person you were ignoring me with! You say you’re nothing like your father but you are an exact copy of him! You think you can buy your way through life, get out of everything because you have a little more money than most but not this time!”
“So that’s it?” Connor shrugged, acting like he was the one hard done by. “After everything I’ve done for you and you throw the father card at me”
“Just leave me alone!” You voice quieter now as you waited for Connor to get the point and go. “I’m done!”
“Y/N?”
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” You snapped your patience wearing paper thin and your body about to cave beneath you.
“You’ll regret this!” Connor spat as he walked to the door.
“No she won’t!” Will replied calmly as he held the door open and waited for Connor to walk out before letting it slam shut in his face, watching as you slowly slumped down to the floor. “Come here!”
Will gently helped you up from the floor before wrapping his arms tightly around you and holding you to his chest as you sobbed your heart out on his t-shirt.
“Hey you did it!” Will spoke softly as he gently swayed you in his arms. “And I’m so proud of you!”
“Thank you for staying!” You replied muffled against his chest.
“You know I’d do anything for you.” Will smiled resting his chin on the top of your head.
“Why do I feel guilty?” You sighed as you stepped back.
“Because that’s how he’s always made you feel, come on!” Will replied as he placed his hands softly on your shoulders and walked you to the couch as you both sat down, Will taking your hands in his. “You just did one of the hardest things there is, you finally got rid of someone who was making you miserable and it was not ok for him to treat you the way he did but he’s gone now! It might hurt for a little while but I know you’ll get past it and you’ll be happier than ever!”
“He was my everything for so long and now he’s gone!” You sniffed as Will pulled you into his arms again.
“I know he was but you did what you had too!” Will’s voice was soft as he placed a comforting kiss to your forehead. “I know it might not seem like it now but once you’ve had time to deal with this and you feel more comfortable you’ll find someone who’s crazy about you and will treat you the way you should’ve always been treated!”
As he shuffled to the end of the couch and placed a cushion on his lap, patting it for you to lay down and rest your head, he wondered whether you had picked up that he was referring to himself although he wasn’t going to push it. All you needed right now was a friend and he was happy to be just that as you curled up with your head on his lap, still crying and sniffing as he soothingly rubbed your arm. Listening out for when your emotionally wrecked body finally gave into sleep before quietly putting the tv on, his hand automatically resting on the top of your head as he gently moved his thumb back and forth as you slept finally in some kind of peace. Eventually he’d need to tell you about his feelings but he was more than happy to keep waiting, the last thing he wanted was to cause you anymore pain.
