Well, Nonnie, you see, Daniel is indeed very pious, because he is very loving. God is love, he adores the Blessed Mother of God, the Saints make him feel safe and supported, he loves the atmosphere and the beauty - but he isn't much for dogma. ok not to be that guy but like. labor rights and working class rights can coexist with 24h services and late amenities. its certainly hard to do so without worker exploitation in this political and social environment, it’s not a conflict likely to resolve overnight. but 24h services are important and especially valuable to those of us that are disabled or are on a different circadian rhythm. in fact more professional, health, and government services should be available or at least possible to work on asynchronously (if applicable) during late or odd hours, while workers also get sufficient pay for their labor and proper consistent scheduling. this would be much easier on the workers with night schedules if the entire professional world didn’t grind to a halt at 5pmEST

Honestly I can tell you finding out art was made by AI really does immediately, legitimately sour it for me, like people will trot this out as a Gotcha for anti-AI people but it's just making it clear they don't consider art to be the conversation that it is lol. It's similar to the way Harry Potter immediately soured for me because engaging with it while knowing the kind of heart Rowling is writing from changes the way the work feels; there isn't any moralizing or whatever that I have to do, it's easy to drop it because it's rotted in my hands.

A very large portion of what is interesting to me about art is thinking of why the creator chose that instrumentation, or what made them want to make the thing in the first place. Finding out I've been talking to a wall completely removes an entire third of the force that art is to me, and I can't argue that anything about art or its consumption is Objectively Correct but I can argue it's fucking boring lmao

I tend to think of AI responses as being a lot like those D+ students who get asked something at an exam and aren't actually very sure of the answers, and have to quickly make up something that vaguely sounds like it makes sense and hope it's close enough to count.

And, like, sometimes their association web is good enough that they stumble into the right answer (and sometimes the right answer was something obvious all along so they just happen to guess correctly). But a lot of the time it's just a pile of nonsense that they think sounds vaguely right.

...silly thought: I guess the way AI training works is pretty much sending them through gazillions of simulated exams and grading them on whether their replies are close enough to correct answers to count, and then hoping that by trial and error they build up enough of the right association web to get correct(ish) answers more often than not. But they're still fundamentally making stuff up every single time.

(And it only works at all because they're doing absolutely insane amounts of said trial-and-error.)

AI is playing improv.

This is is a key difference and should shape how you think about AI and what it can do.

I agree that "in Germany your boss legally has to provide you with work while you're at your job" is a bit funny considering the German stereotype. But I am really annoyed at people who act like this is some horrible hypercapitalist thing on that post about pushing people out of their jobs by just not giving them anything to do. When really it's very basic worker protection (within the context of German emplyment law.) Because under most circumstances you can't just be fired from your job. Your employer has to provide a reason for firing you if they want to get rid of you. You also have a right to specifially the work you were hired to do.

So your boss having to give you appropriate work makes illegal any of the following:

a) Making you clean toilets instead of (or in addition to) the clearly defined office job you agreed to do

b) Not giving you work and then firing you for not doing your work

c) Waiting for you to crack under the intense boredom of having to stay on one place with absolutely nothing to do for eight hours a day while your coworkers are roped into it to shun you (or hate you because for some reason you're the only one who doesn't have to do any work) until you quit "voluntarily"

or d) waiting for you to crack under the aformentioned pressure until you do what the people in the notes said they'd do, like watching movies or doing a second job instead which is something you then can be reprimanded and fired for
