Phone scam gothic
So my mom sits down and starts telling me about two weird-ass phone calls she had today—she was returning a missed call, and the woman who answered just… sobbed for a minute. I’m sitting here asking, like, a whole minute? Nothing else, just sobbing? Who did you THINK you were calling back?
“United Healthcare, they have my Medicare plan. They’ve been calling me for weeks without leaving any voicemail.”
(Are you sure it was United Healthcare? “It was the same number that’s on my card, I checked, and that’s who the caller ID said it was.”)
Are you sure it was a whole minute? Did YOU say anything?
“Yes, like sixty seconds while I kept going ‘Hello? Hello?’ It sounded like she was having a nervous breakdown, I kept waiting to see if she’d tell me what was even wrong. Finally I just hung up.”
And then my mom turned right around and called back again, because she was gonna get to the bottom of this.
This time she got a different woman, perfectly calm, who wanted to set up “your in-home direct patient care home health visit.”
At this point (at this point?) I’m staring, because no one here currently has anyone coming to the house to help with any kind of medical care. My mom might honestly be the healthiest member of the household, but even I don’t use any home services, herniated discs and all. “Did they have you… confused with someone else?”
“No, she repeated my full name and phone number back to me.”
This lady then started ARGUING with my mother. Why don’t you want us to come to your house to manage your direct patient care? Don’t you need home health care to be managed? Why don’t you need home health care? Why would you not want home health care? “I JUST KIND OF HAVE HIGH CHOLESTEROL?” But don’t you want us to manage your home health care? “WHY DO YOU NEED TO COME TO MY HOUSE TO MANAGE HEALTH CARE I DON’T USE?”
My mom finally hung up on this lady as well, without giving her any real information.
The more we talked about it, the more things we started to notice:
I was incredibly creeped out by the unsolicited use of the word “manage,” for some reason. Very sinister “write me into your will” vibes for some reason—I don’t know what these people want, but they’re gonna get you to sign something over.
My mom got especially stuck on “WHY DO YOU NEED TO COME TO MY HOUSE?!”
My mom has used home health services before… years ago, before she was on Medicare. But this company wouldn’t know about that. However, if you’re on Medicare, you’re over 65. Having not ever dealt with my mother before, someone calling a Medicare user might be playing the odds that a person over 65 is 1) in frail health and 2) old enough to get easily confused.
Fair play to my mom, she’s the one who thought of number spoofing. I’m so busy not answering the phone ever and arranging all my medical communications to happen through passworded portals that I didn’t think of it.
Hey, are you guys, like… holding someone hostage…?
So at this point, I google “United Healthcare scam.”
The “health insurance counselor”
This fraudster will offer help navigating the health insurance marketplace for a fee, capitalizing on people’s confusion about the state-based health exchanges created through the Affordable Care Act.
What to know
This sort of assistance is indeed available and is legitimate, but the people who offer it – also known as “navigators” – aren’t allowed to charge for their services. Also, remember that people with Medicare coverage don’t need to use the state health exchanges. The exchanges are for people under the age of 65, who are looking to enroll in an individual health plan.
Change “navigate” to “manage,” and I think this is it, although the lady on the phone never mentioned any fees. Either my mom didn’t let her get that far, or this is the point of actually getting into someone’s house: persuading them face-to-face to pay something, and potentially refusing to leave until the scammer has worn their target down.
Medicare does not make unsolicited phone calls.
Okay, so it was a scam no matter what it was about. As far as I’m concerned, my mom should contact Actual United Healthcare about it, and I’m here to spread the good word of Never Believing Anyone on the Phone 2k24. I don’t know what to tell you about the lady having the nervous breakdown though.

Medical research has shortchanged women for decades. This is particularly true of older women, leaving physicians without critically important information about how to best manage their health.
Late last year, the Biden administration promised to address this problem with a new effort called the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research. That inspires a compelling question: What priorities should be on the initiative’s list when it comes to older women?
Stephanie Faubion, director of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health, launched into a critique when I asked about the current state of research on older women’s health. “It’s completely inadequate,” she told me.
One example: Many drugs widely prescribed to older adults, including statins for high cholesterol, were studied mostly in men, with results extrapolated to women.
“It’s assumed that women’s biology doesn’t matter and that women who are premenopausal and those who are postmenopausal respond similarly,” Faubion said.
“This has got to stop: The FDA has to require that clinical trial data be reported by sex and age for us to tell if drugs work the same, better, or not as well in women,” Faubion insisted.
Consider the Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi, approved by the FDA last year after the manufacturer reported a 27% slower rate of cognitive decline in people who took the medication. A supplementary appendix to a Leqembi study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that sex differences were substantial — a 12% slowdown for women, compared with a 43% slowdown for men — raising questions about the drug’s effectiveness for women.
This is especially important because nearly two-thirds of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease are women. Older women are also more likely than older men to have multiple medical conditions, disabilities, difficulties with daily activities, autoimmune illness, depression and anxiety, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis, among other issues, according to scores of research studies. (Read more at link)
While it certainly isn’t a panacea, for certain things I will only see a female doctor. No one is immune to bias and I’ve had bad experiences with some women, overall I feel more listened to and more at ease at appointments. Medical sexism is way too real, and we should use any tool we can to minimize it.

Heyy, I have a question about cholesterol, I'm relatively young (20) and I suffer from high cholesterol (it's genetic) and I was just wondering how can I lower it without taking pills, like I've tried walking everyday and having a healthy diet yet it doesn't seem to lower it much
Hi, my love! That’s a great question, and I totally get why you want to manage your cholesterol without relying on medication, especially at such a young age. Since your high cholesterol is genetic, it means your body is naturally predisposed to producing more of it, which can make lifestyle changes alone less effective. That being said, there are still things you can do to help manage it as much as possible.
First, focusing on the quality of fats in your diet can make a difference. Cutting back on saturated fats (found in red meat, butter, and full-fat dairy) and replacing them with healthy fats from sources like olive oil, avocados, and fatty fish can help. Increasing your intake of soluble fiber like that found in oats, beans, lentils, and fruits such as apples can also help reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by preventing your body from absorbing as much of it.
Regular physical activity is great, and it sounds like you’re already on top of that! If you want to step it up a bit, higher-intensity workouts or resistance training a few times a week might have a greater impact on raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol, which helps counteract the effects of high LDL.
Since your high cholesterol is genetic, though, there’s a limit to how much lifestyle changes alone can do. Some people with familial hypercholesterolemia or other genetic conditions affecting cholesterol metabolism end up needing medication even with a perfect diet and exercise routine. If your cholesterol levels are still high despite all your efforts, it might be worth talking to a doctor about whether medication is necessary to prevent long-term issues like heart disease.
I know it can be frustrating when it feels like you’re doing everything right and not seeing the results you want, but you’re already taking important steps to protect your health. I hope this helps a little!

The kingdom of Fungal Life
When we think about the natural world, our minds often gravitate towards lush forests, vibrant flowers, and majestic animals. However, lurking beneath the surface and often hidden from plain sight is a kingdom of life that is as essential as it is mysterious: fungi. These remarkable organisms play a crucial role in the ecosystem, contributing to processes that sustain life on Earth. Let’s delve into the captivating world of fungi and explore their diverse and critical roles in nature.
Fungi belong to their own kingdom, separate from plants, animals, and bacteria. This diverse group includes yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. Unlike plants, fungi do not perform photosynthesis; instead, they obtain nutrients through absorption. They secrete enzymes that break down complex organic matter into simpler compounds, which they then absorb. This mode of nutrition classifies them as saprophytes (decomposers), parasites, or mutualists.
One of the most vital roles fungi play in nature is that of decomposers. They break down dead organic material, such as fallen leaves, dead trees, and animal carcasses. This decomposition process is crucial for nutrient cycling, as it releases essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus back into the soil, making them available for plants and other organisms. Without fungi, these nutrients would remain locked in dead matter, disrupting the balance of ecosystems.
Many fungi form symbiotic relationships with plants through structures known as mycorrhizae. These fungi colonize plant roots, extending far into the soil and increasing the surface area for water and nutrient absorption. In return, the fungi receive carbohydrates produced by the plant through photosynthesis. This mutualistic relationship enhances plant growth, resilience to stress, and nutrient uptake, illustrating a remarkable example of cooperation in nature.
While many fungi play beneficial roles, some can be pathogenic, causing diseases in plants, animals, and humans. For instance, the fungus Ophiocordyceps infects ants and other insects, eventually controlling their behavior to facilitate spore dispersal. In plants, fungi can cause devastating diseases like rusts, smuts, and blights, affecting crops and natural vegetation. Understanding these pathogenic interactions is crucial for managing agricultural health and preserving natural ecosystems.
Beyond their ecological roles, fungi have significant applications in medicine and biotechnology. The discovery of penicillin, derived from the mold Penicillium, revolutionized medicine by providing the first effective antibiotic. Fungi also produce other medically important compounds, such as immunosuppressants and cholesterol-lowering drugs. In biotechnology, fungi are used in processes ranging from fermentation in food production to the breakdown of pollutants in bioremediation.
Fungi exhibit a stunning variety of forms and colors, particularly noticeable in mushrooms and molds. From the luminescent glow of bioluminescent fungi to the intricate patterns of mushroom caps, fungi contribute to the aesthetic diversity of nature. Some fungi even exhibit bizarre and fascinating behaviors, such as the slime molds that can navigate mazes or the cordyceps fungi that create “zombie” insects.

Rant about diabetes below (things that grind my gears about what people say, and just general health stuff I’ve been going through lately)
You can tell when people don’t know how diabetes works when they say stuff like a cheeseburger will give them diabetes. Fucker diabetes is a sugar and carb issue not a cholesterol issue. And you can’t GIVE yourself diabetes. Getting diabetes fully depends on your body’s genetics, like family history, or just being super unlucky when it comes to health lottery
You don’t get diabetes from being fat, it’s technically the opposite. Unexplained Weight gain and loss is a symptom.
You can’t get diabetes from eating too much of certain foods. Yes including the offending ones that are bad for diabetics. It’s about insulin production and sensitivity. Some people don’t produce insulin (type one). Some people are resistant to insulin (type two and what I have). Some people will be on medical insulin their entire lives. Sometimes you can manage it with diet changes (might as well be an eating disorder in my opinion but it keeps from dying via ice cream)
Too high or low of a blood sugar can cause a diabetic coma. So if you see a diabetic eating something sweet, it could be their daily treat they allow themselves because people deserve happiness, or they could be treating a low blood sugar.
bread is mean to me, bread is delicious. Why must this be so. Some foods are just unable to be replaced. My favorite cookie recipe <\3 I miss it
Learned I almost fucking went into coma range for blood sugars a while back. I was told the numbers by a nurse at my mental health center and not yooou know….MY FUCKING DOCTOR. I knew low blood sugar could potentially cause a coma, but my doctor didn’t think it important to tell the patient with high blood sugar problems that comas were possible with highs?! I could have fucking killed myself with fucking ice cream of all fucking things.
I’m lucky I found a substitute for pasta. A reasonably priced one anyway!
Plain white sandwich bread has decent substitutes but no more fresh bread for meee :(
I never thought I would miss eating cereal. I am jealous of people’s ability to eat cereal. Even the healthy ones have to many sugars or carbs. Usually carbs. But carbs break down into sugar really quickly, which is what makes them a moderation food category.
Everything breaks down into sugar/glucose technically. It’s the body’s preference on energy. But some foods break down slower than others allowing my slow ass insulin to actually work. Alongside the help of the medical insulin I was given.
I’m on insulin now! It took them long enough. I went from between 200 and 400 to between mid 100 to low 200! It’s funny how much better it when they actually started treating it, instead of just telling me to change my diet which I had been doing for fucking months and it wasn’t working. Strictest diet of my entire life, without the insulin it still was in the 300s and 400s. Like I think my insulin resistance is bad enough I NEED the medical insulin. I won’t be surprised if I am on it for the rest of my life
Lost a lot of comfort foods. Hit my depression hard. I am learning to deal with it. Food is expensive when you have dietary restrictions. I knew that before all of this. I honestly have to thank some of the fad diets for food availability. Sugar free and low carb food is a lot easier to find these days! I still don’t like fad diets all that much. But man, they do sometimes help people who have food restrictions for medical reasons by giving those greedy CEOs dollar bill eyes when they see the marketable trend. Food is still expensive tho
If a white sugar alternative says use it like real sugar (baking or sweetness wise) they are WRONG. A white sugar substitute I have is about the same sweetness, you might notice an aftertaste if you’re sensitive to stevia sweeteners, but it is powdery. Texture is wrong. Not even like powdered sugar. Like that fake snow powder before it gets rehydrated, or really fine potato flakes. Not good for baking. Only good for coffee. Wouldn’t recommend for fruit punch or teas. No/10 wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for an actual white sugar substitute. If you need it for only coffee maybe/10 get a small amount first
Cooking has gotten more complicated lately 👍
My depression is sooooo happy about that (sarcasm)

Trenbolone Enanthate Side Effects on the Liver
Trenbolone Enanthate is a potent anabolic steroid frequently used by bodybuilders and athletes to enhance muscle growth and improve performance. However, its benefits extend beyond muscle building—it's also effective for fat loss. This blog will explore how to use Trenbolone Enanthate for fat loss, including dosage recommendations, cycle guidelines, and safety considerations.
Understanding Trenbolone Enanthate
Trenbolone Enanthate is a long-acting ester of the anabolic steroid trenbolone. Known for its powerful fat-burning properties, it accelerates metabolism and enhances the body’s ability to burn fat while preserving lean muscle mass. Unlike other steroids, Trenbolone Enanthate does not convert to estrogen, reducing the risk of estrogen-related side effects such as water retention.
Benefits of Trenbolone Enanthate for Fat Loss
Increased Metabolic Rate Trenbolone Enanthate boosts the metabolic rate, leading to more efficient fat burning. This helps reduce body fat percentage while maintaining or even increasing muscle mass.
Enhanced Muscle Preservation While it facilitates fat loss, Trenbolone Enanthate also protects lean muscle mass. This is particularly beneficial during cutting phases, where the primary goal is to reduce body fat without sacrificing muscle.
Improved Nutrient Partitioning This steroid enhances nutrient utilization, ensuring that calories are directed towards muscle growth and repair rather than fat storage. This makes it easier to achieve a leaner physique.
Recommended Dosage and Cycle Length
For effective fat loss, Trenbolone Enanthate is typically used in cycles of 8 to 12 weeks. Here’s a general guideline for dosage:
Beginners: Start with 200 to 300 mg per week. This lower dosage helps assess tolerance and effectiveness while minimizing potential side effects.
Intermediate Users: Dosages of 300 to 400 mg per week are common among those with prior experience. This range often provides a balance between effective fat loss and manageable side effects.
Trenbolone Enanthate has a long half-life, so it is typically administered once or twice a week. Consistent dosing helps maintain stable blood levels and ensures optimal results.
Stacking Trenbolone Enanthate
Many users stack Trenbolone Enanthate with other steroids to enhance fat loss and muscle definition. Common combinations include:
Trenbolone Enanthate and Testosterone Enanthate: This stack maintains stable testosterone levels while benefiting from Trenbolone’s fat-burning effects.
Trenbolone Enanthate and Masteron: Masteron is another steroid known for its fat-burning properties. Combined with Trenbolone Enanthate, it can result in a more defined and lean physique.
Trenbolone Enanthate and Anavar: Anavar, an oral steroid, complements Trenbolone Enanthate by further enhancing fat loss and preserving lean muscle.
Managing Side Effects
While Trenbolone Enanthate is effective for fat loss, it can come with side effects. Here’s how to manage them:
Cardiovascular Health: Trenbolone Enanthate may affect cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Regular cardiovascular exercise and a heart-healthy diet can mitigate these risks. Monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels is essential.
Hormonal Imbalances: Trenbolone Enanthate suppresses natural testosterone production. Post-cycle therapy (PCT) with medications like Clomid or Nolvadex is crucial for restoring natural testosterone levels after a cycle.
Androgenic Effects: Users may experience acne, oily skin, or hair loss. Managing dosages and maintaining proper skincare can help reduce these effects.
Note:
Trenbolone Enanthate is a powerful tool for fat loss, offering significant benefits such as increased metabolism, muscle preservation, and improved nutrient partitioning. To use it effectively, adhere to recommended dosages, follow a structured cycle, and be vigilant about managing potential side effects. Combining Trenbolone Enanthate with a healthy diet and regular exercise will enhance fat loss results and help you achieve a lean, muscular physique.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quick backstory. Since 2023 my work schedule was a reverse 8-5, clocking in at 8 PM. Being a night owl it was no problem at first, but I soon learned the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in the big city with unhealthy diet as well.
Around 2024 my cholesterol and weight spiked up thanks to genetics already and my unhealthy work-life balance as I wanted to grind and reach the top immediately. I took medications and was almost 70 kilograms at that point. Did I learn from it? I was still working hard and giving it all.
Of course, as expected by 2025 and all the holiday festivities, I’ve acquired a fatty liver by the start of the year. So I was nowhere with my career progression and my health was drastically declining. I had to do something and make a choice.
By the start of the year as well, everything was aligning for me to focus more on myself this time around to try to improve my health and go back to the things I once had to put on pause because of my shifting priorities.
I had a new schedule for the first quarter of the year, it being 12 PM to 9 PM. I used the opportunity to seize every day to get better. You could say, I finally did put one foot in front of the other. I did not plan nor seek to chase after the running hype or clout. It found me in time of uncertainty and despair from my frustrations and health concerns.
And without the ensuing detailed drama of the first quarter. Here I am. My health vitals all back to normal. After all, that’s my main goal since day one. Still, I have to maintain this activity as an act of self-care and healthcare.
It’s been quite a therapeutic hobby for four months now. I’m still not after the PR and ego running. I just run now to run away from my problems and my new manager and heavy workload amidst this crazy new schedule of 6 PM to 3 AM.
It sounds crazy running at 3 AM or so called, devil hours, but the summer heat was a pain in the ass and skin since last April. And also, I swear to this. It’s super peaceful running alone in silence sometimes and just hearing my footsteps. I’m able to decompress my thoughts to avoid overwhelming myself or spiral into deep thoughts and a depressive state. I’m also now used to this routine. I’m not sure how things will be for me next June though when I return to the new office building and my apartment.

As someone with PCOS (which heavily involves insulin issues) the elevated liver numbers are likely caused by insulin issues! I get my blood checked and consistently find my cholesterol is somewhat out of whack due to insulin resistance but even on meds my A1c is just within normal. There are a lot of strategies for lowering insulin spikes from meals that are low effort (like refrigerating or freezing carb sources to make starches resistant). There're also supplements that act like some medicines but thankfully metformin seems to be one of the cheapest medicines we make (after checking GoodRX, Walmart charges $4 without insurance for a months supply) and as long as your stomach isn't too upset by it, it's very effective
Metformin is NOT a kind drug, unfortunately, and I'm already on several unkind drugs. With my liver disease, I have to be extremely careful about what I take.
I do also have PCOS on top of my diabetes, which could be a contributing factor to my high blood sugar. Two of my necessary meds can also cause high blood sugar.
Due to how many issues I have, though, it's a real puzzle trying to manage my health. PCOS, diabetes, psoriatic arthritis, gastrointestinal issues, and then my liver disease is the cherry on top. All of them require different medications to manage, and some of those meds interfere with others, and some have side effects that can harm my liver or raise my blood sugar, and--

weed smoking! joel x dispensary shop! reader preview 🍃🔥💨💨💨
Tumblr media
A/N: A little taste for you guys! I am very excited at this new idea, especially because I am co-writing this with the actual love of my life @serenaxpedro!!!
So excited to see where it will go and excited to see our grumpy old peepaw finally kick back and relax with some alternate pain management methods. He's not gonna be happy about it at first, but it's going to turn out so good 🤓. Moodboard art also by @serenaxpedro (please go check out her delicious writing as well, she's got some YUMMY Joel fic's posted 🫠)
sneak peak under the cut, feel free to comment or reblog if you want more!
“The side effects from an over the counter painkiller could spike your cholesterol even higher, which is what we do not want,” the doctor continues, unaware of Joel’s steadily boiling frustration. “Which is why I wanted to suggest an alternate method for pain management, something more natural.”
For fucks sake.
He thought this would be a simple appointment. Show up, get a new prescription for whatever magic pills can help this pain in his back to dissipate, and go home. Not look into ‘alternative methods’ that undoubtedly wouldn’t work.
Joel’s gaze narrows and he huffs, leaning back in his seat. “Natural? Like what, seeing one of those hokey practitioners that read your energies and use natural herb remedies and all that crap?”
“Not quite that per say but it is natural medicine. Medical marijuana to be exact.”
Joel’s mouth goes dry as his jaw hangs open. Weed? Nope. Not the solution he was looking for.
Maybe what he should be on the market for is a new doctor at this point.
“Uh listen, I appreciate the suggestion doc, but I don’t think that’s gonna help me at this point. I don’t do that kinda stuff,” he waves his hand dismissively. “If it gets to that point I’ll crack open a beer.” Joel leans forward in his seat and he starts to get up.
“Just a second, hold on. At least let me write you a prescription for it today and you can choose whether or not you want to get it filled at a dispensary.”
“I don’t think-” Joel continues to protest but the doctor cuts him off.
“It’s medicinal marijuana Joel,” the doctor says plainly, as if that’s supposed to calm his nerves. “It has opiate-like properties, which means it’s similar to a pain killer, just without all the usual side effects that come with over the counter medicine. Lots of individuals, older and younger,” the doctor pointedly emphasizes, “use it to help with aches, pain, anxiety, even mental health issues. Not just the physical.”
Joel continues to eye the doctor warily, his spine now stiff as he sits up in the chair. Even now, he can feel his body protesting his upright position, the inkling of that pinched phantom pain coming back slightly.
“Does it get you high?” he asks the older man.
Aside from the stories he’s heard, he’s had his fair share of buddies who used to toke up back in the day. Hell, they didn’t even know what was in it back then, they just smoked as a distraction, something fun to do, to take the edge off after a long day's work. Joel tried it once and didn’t like it at all. The hazy, fuzzy feeling not mixing well with his frayed nerves, all glassy eyed and out of touch with his body and his mind. No, he would much rather crack open a beer or pour himself a whiskey neat to kick back and relax when he was stressed.
“Not necessarily, some strains, or some kinds of weed have a higher content of THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive component that makes you feel high or ‘out of it,”’ the doctor explains with finger quotes. “Some medicinal marijuana are low in THC but high in CBD, the relaxing component of marijuana. CBD acts as a relaxer, and it can ease physical pain. So depending on what you’re comfortable with, you can opt for the kinds that have a high CBD but low THC content, which will help with any pain issues, without causing you to experience the high.”
Joel’s mind whirls around the acronyms. THC, CBD, ABC.
Christ.
Does it have to be this fucking complicated?

Getting back on track
I had a doctor's appointment on Thursday. Sadly, my suspicions were confirmed. I have inherited cholesterol and blood sugar problems from my parents. Neither are problematic enough to need medication at this point, so we're seeing how I can manage it without meds.
I did some looking about online and found that the Mediterranean diet is good for both blood sugar and cholesterol, and is basically what I've been aiming for this whole time!
Tumblr media
I'm grateful I have supplies to make plant-based lunches right now. I'm trying not to go too far into avoiding some foods and stocking up on others right now. It's been 2 days.
But I am working on being more aware of the added sugar in things. Turns out the tea I'd buy to have at lunch at work has 44% of the daily value of added sugars. As much as I like it, I am definitely not drinking it 3x a week anymore. I'm not cutting out sweets completely, but I am trying to get back to no more than 1 Pepsi a day. And I'm working toward that goal of 1 sweet a week. I don't know if I'll get there before my next appointment, but I figure trying is the best thing.
I am lucky that I finally got a spring mix that I love and only put some extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar on it. I also picked up some very small orange tomatoes from Whole Foods the other day. They are delicious!!!
Now I should go cut up a pepperoni pizza and figure out some fruit or veg to have with it.

“Hng, you and your surfer-boy bullshit-“ Saltern quips as Abel lands at his side and the water flows into a shield over their position. Rounds pound into the holy water, their points mushrooming as they hit the unyielding wall, an ever-growing bouquet of copper-and-lead flowers suspended in the tiny, writhing tides.
The wound is bad, a mangled mess of flesh, intestines, and bullet fragments. Not immediately fatal, but without surgery or some quickly-applied healing magic, Saltern would surely die, if not of blood loss then by succumbing to infection.
The man laughs at Abel’s comment, though it is cut short by a wheeze and a pained groan. “You’re mixed up, man, I was shitting my guts out for weeks after that.”
The initial stab of pain as the tendril of water breaches the wound is indescribable, leaving the heavy gunner unable to do much as draw breath, much less cry out, but God, does he want to. The tendrils work through the wound swiftly as they are guided by Abel’s practiced hand, catching the main body of the projectile and all of its fragments, the metallic pieces tinkling against the floor of the emplacement.
The water seems to do its job well, slowly beginning to knit together torn flesh and organs, the pain beginning to dull, and the bleeding beginning to slow even as Abel hops up onto the gun to take Albert’s position.
Rounds continue to smack into the shield, a few of them finding the narrow sliver the medic keeps open, whizzing past his body as he begins to put rounds down range.
The exorcists who are advancing towards the barricade are caught out in the open, and their light armor offers no protection against the large-caliber projectiles being hurtled down range. One woman is cut clean in half as they stitch across her midsection, unable to even scream as she falls to the ground. Another is caught in the shoulder, the entirety of her arm flying from her body in a spurt of bright gold arterial blood.
The platform shakes as another exorcist from above lands on it alongside Abel, her blade raised and ready to strike. Before the blow can fall, her body jerks once, twice, thrice, before the three neat holes in her side explode outward, showering Abel’s armor in blood and bits of bone.
Albert lay where he’d fallen, his sidearm now in his hand even as Abel’s holy water continues to root around in his guts, the barrel smoking as the Exorcists corpse falls from the platform.
"You should try it sometime. I've been told it helps with anger management. Possibly cholesterol-" Both of which Albert could do with- well, once his guts were all sewn back up anyway. If it weren't for that, he imagines his insinuation would have been met with a headlock and a subsequent grinding of knuckles into a shorn nape because Albert would claim that helped manage his anger more. Perhaps later. There would be a later...
As bullets blasted the shield overhead- an amplified champagne burst and pop for each entry into the blistering body of water, the medic is quick to retrieve and discard the stray and it's fragments from Saltern's, leaving the water in its place to meticulously sew damaged ends of guts and reconnect them with bouts of roiling pain that likely did mimic the results of ingesting chili oil infused wasabi by the pound. "It was voluntary..." The reminder is the last thing he shares with the other before he's scrambling to get the station secured for when Albert could find his feet again.
There's no denying the other is a repelling force with his aim, because it doesn't take long for some exorcists to find their way beneath the shield and through the stream of outgoing return fire, and once the bodies of a few block the final entry point as living shields for the last infiltrator to rattle the platform with her landing. The gust of her wings too close for comfort upsets his balance to the side, and the gauntlet on his arm prepares to catch the blow while he grabs for the handle of the field dressing dagger sheathed at his side. The resounding whizz of a shot from behind renders the padding of his armor freshly painted with splatter of gold, and he blinks as the exorcist topples over mid attack.
Swinging his gaze back to confirm Saltern was still on the mend, he nods and offers the man a camaraderie chorus of "get some!" over a jerked thumb. They had done the whole storm the base drill countless times, and the defensive position was really a matter of hunkering down and diverting the onslaught's patience to take a preferred route. That route, from what he understands will have their back up from the embassy...they just have to last that long.
Tumblr media
Thumbing past the dagger, he yanks free the shepherd's cane from its holster on his back, the glint of angelic steel evident in the slope of its handle. If another makes it through, he's going to hit them right back out into the bullet spray. Flock around and find out.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a prevalent but severe medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It’s called a “silent killer” because it usually has no noticeable symptoms, but it poses a significant risk for heart disease and stroke, which are among the top causes of death. Understanding and managing high blood pressure is crucial for maintaining long-term health and preventing these severe complications.
Understanding High Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the flow of blood on the walls of blood vessels. Having elevated blood pressure over an extended period can harm the blood vessels and place extra stress on the heart. Typically, a blood pressure measurement of 140/90 mmHg or greater is categorized as high.
Causes and Risk Factors
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can be caused by various factors. The most common type, primary hypertension, develops gradually over many years without any specific identifiable cause. On the other hand, secondary hypertension, which is less common, is caused by an underlying condition like kidney disease or certain medications and tends to appear suddenly. Factors that increase the risk of hypertension comprise a family history of the condition, advancing age, obesity, insufficient physical activity, smoking, excessive salt consumption, and heavy alcohol intake. It is important to manage these risk factors to prevent and control high blood pressure.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Most people with high blood pressure do not exhibit symptoms, even when blood pressure reaches dangerously high levels. Regular blood pressure checks can help in early detection since headaches, shortness of breath, or nosebleeds may not occur until high blood pressure reaches a severe stage.
Managing High Blood Pressure
Management of high blood pressure typically involves lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication. Lifestyle modifications are the first line of defense and include:
Dietary Changes: Embracing a dietary pattern characterized by reduced sodium, saturated fats, and cholesterol intake, along with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can notably lower blood pressure.
Regular Physical Activity: Engaging in 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week is a commitment that can enhance heart health and lower blood pressure.
Weight Management: Losing weight can effectively reduce blood pressure if you are overweight.
Limiting Alcohol and Quitting Smoking: Reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking can improve heart health and lower blood pressure.
Stress Management: Chronic stress may lead to hypertension; thus, practicing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can be helpful.
In some cases, lifestyle changes alone are not enough, and medications are prescribed to lower blood pressure. It’s important to take these medications as directed and regularly consult with a healthcare provider for monitoring and adjustments.
High blood pressure is a manageable condition, but it requires awareness, lifestyle changes, and possibly medication. Regular blood pressure monitoring is very useful for early detection and management to significantly reduce the risk of hypertension-related complications such as heart disease and stroke.
