Hm. You know, there's something of an ongoing severely missed opportunity to really do a deep dive exploration into how "human" (i.e. messed up, hypocritical, & fully aware of this while trying to be better) Tang Sanzang kind of is given that he yells at and tortures Sun Wukong for killing bandits that wanted to kill them even though in his own backstory the monk was okay with having the bandits that killed his dad and assaulted his mom get tortured to death.
I mean, if you want to focus purely on compassion the Monkey King quickly bonks the bandits that attack him to death. Tang Sanzang and his family, however, literally had one bandit be killed by getting sliced with a sword like a hundred times before they offered the heart and liver of the other as libations after having them torn out of this guy while he was still alive.

Danny Phantom Prompt: Too Late to Save Them
Ok! There are similar concepts floating either around here or AO3 (or both), but I haven’t been able to find this particular angst path. (Though I’m sure it’s around)
So!
Canon Divergence After TUE (The Ultimate Enemy)
Danny fought his evil self, but was too late to save his family. Clockwork didn’t reverse time to save them— they were always meant to die. It was their “time.”
-------------
“NO!”
Danny was flown backward from the explosion, his body hurtling along with the rubble.
The rubble.
When the dust settled he heard sirens in the distance. Saw. . . a torn red beret beside his foot.
Tucker.
Sam.
His. . .
Family.
Distraught, confused, exhausted, Danny notices a woman crouched down beside him. She’s speaking to him, but he can’t hear her; there’s a dull buzz all around him, and the world seems more. . . narrow. It’s hard for him to focus on what he’s seeing.
And then she. . . freezes.
The world freezes in time.
The ghost, Clockwork, is floating behind her. He has his hand out, waiting for something. His expression unreadable, but Danny understands.
His fingers lightly grasp the thermos holding his future self. As though in a trance, he lifts it up to Clockwork. Gives him the thermos.
Clockwork accepts it, continues looking at him impassively.
Resumes time.
. . .
The days go by. He is released from the hospital in the care of a caseworker. She is talking to him gently, but he doesn’t hear what she’s saying.
He's had many people talk to him, so many people gazing at him with pity. He can't be bothered to care.
He is led to a car, someone buckles him in. The car begins driving, and soon is parked in front of Fenton Works.
His home.
The caseworker is saying something. . . Something about his aunt Alicia. He ignores her, walking into the house.
Into the lab.
He hears her scurrying after him.
Ignoring her cries of alarm, he goes into the portal.
…
He floats in the ghost zone. A few ghosts attempt to banter with him, push him around; but noticing his non reaction, leave him be.
He can’t go home. Can’t go to Vlad. He has to keep his humanity to prevent becoming a monster.
But how can he keep what he can’t feel?
He’s lost them all.
But he can keep his promise.
“Don't worry. I won't turn into that. Ever. I promise.”
He floats further and further into the ghost zone.

just wanted to say that your thomas wayne au is making me swoon - baby bruce is the most adorable baby ever and they love each other so much 😭
(I saw you mentioned them meeting canon dc and I think everyone of the batfam would be unwillingly won over by this adorable baby and their grandad (and adult bruce would either be paralysed by emotion or start crying or both)) (and maybe there is no martha wayne, simply thomas and alfred raising the cutest and most troublesome baby 😏)
Aaaaahhh I'm so glad you like it 🥺 i love making aus that have the emotional effect of a gut punch on the Bats 🥰 its why 'Danny being a variant of Jason' is such a fun little au I have that I haven't shared here since its pretty convoluted imo.
And i absolutely agree you have it down pat that the canon DC Batfam would be unwillingly won over by Baby Bruce and Danny/Thomas frfr. Danny is so protective and affectionate with his little guy, and I have a personal headcanon that he teaches Bruce how to play piano after discovering an interest in it once he's adopted by the Waynes. (OH and when Bruce is older Danny sits him out in the gardens or on the roofs and shows him how to find constellations)
Danny finds out that the bruce in this world grew up without his parents and starts side-eyeing him HARD bc he wants to be affectionate to this version of His Boy but he doesnt want Bruce to react negatively to it
I'll also tell you a secret: the day Danny and Bruce are transported into the canon universe was the day Danny and Bruce were meant to end up in crime alley :) they were just about to leave the manor.

saying I ship them is not enough, I need to carefully and intricately explain exactly how their dynamic works and what they mean to each other and how they rely on the other in a detailed fashion that encapsulates exactly how their relationship effects me as a person. I need to put their relationship in a way that is more than just ‘I think they should kiss’ because kissing is gross and I think they should fight each other and fight for each other instead as an act of love. And because there’s so many ways to love, defining it through only a small selection of actions does it no justice. I need to explain the ways they care for the other, especially the parts that are never spoken. The intricacies of love as a concept that aren’t bound to a simple romance will be spilled once I get my damn hands on it
