It's not always a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake (Buggy x GN!reader)
Tumblr media
Gif from monikanarnia
Description: Late one night you find Buggy in the kitchen growing increasingly distressed over dessert.
Word count: ~1.2k
A/N: One shot fluff with an established relationship. Gender neutral reader, no use of Y/N, pronouns, or physical descriptions. Based on OPLA buggy. Not beta read. Hope you like this! Let me know if you see any errors or typos. ♡
Warnings: Some light profanity, but that's about it!
˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ✩ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ✩ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ ✩ ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗
Lured by the sounds of activity at a time when most of the ship was asleep, you peered into the kitchen and finally found the person you were looking for. Buggy was hunched over the center island, deeply focused on the cake in front of him. He finished spreading the frosting and stepped back to observe his work. The scowl on his face and annoyed muttering were clear signals that he wasn’t satisfied. Despite being an artist, cake decorating was not his usual medium and it showed. Based on the amount of flour on his vest, pants, bandana, and in his hair, baking was also not his forte.
Buggy ran a knife along the top of the cake, attempting to smooth out the white frosting. Instead the sweet coating stuck to the knife and lifted up to expose the bare cake underneath, as if he had wounded the confection. Trying to hold in the anger that wanted to burst from his mouth, Buggy’s fists flew to his head and he turned in place, stomping on the floor. Shouting was guaranteed to wake someone up and Buggy did not need anyone to see the absolute failure in front of him.
His glare flitted between the marred cake and the knife still in his hand before he flung the offending utensil towards the other side of the kitchen. The resounding clang caused him to flinch. He hoped it wasn’t loud enough to attract attention. A few heavy moments later, Buggy sighed and leaned over the cake. From where you were, you couldn’t tell if the weight in his rounded shoulders was from anger or disappointment. But you knew Buggy well enough that he wouldn’t give up yet. And you were right.
With a cautious hand, Buggy began tapping at the lumpy frosting, nudging it into place. His gentle, feather-light touches showed a level of restraint and artistry that could only rival Michaelangelo chipping away marble, intent at bringing out the beauty only his fingertips could find. Finally satisfied with the coverage, Buggy assessed his work again. Despite being slightly worse than it was before the frosting incident, he was afraid of making an irreparable mistake. There wasn’t any more flour or sugar left in the kitchen. This wasn’t the first cake he baked. Or the second. But this was the first one that was fluffy and edible. Maybe if he decorated the cake with other things, the streaky, lumpy, crumby coating wouldn’t stand out as much.
Buggy stalked around the kitchen, rummaging in the cabinets and digging through drawers, looking for ingredients that were worthy of garnishing his confection composition. His frustration grew with each cabinet and drawer he opened and slammed shut. When he finally ripped open the fridge door he was greeted with the perfect gems, signaling the end of his kitchen treasure hunt. His greedy pirate hands pulled out some ruby red cherries. Buggy gave them a quick rinse in the sink and popped one in his mouth, finding satisfaction in the sharp snap and sweet juice from the ripe fruit.
Moments later, the fruit adorned the top perimeter of the cake, each one nested carefully into the frosting. Buggy stared thoughtfully at the cake as he fiddled with the last cherry, lightly rolling it on the table with his finger. With an air of hesitation, he placed the red orb in the center of the cake. No one else would second guess the placement, but the pirate clown was overly sensitive about anything that could be mocking the one feature he had trouble accepting about himself. A feature that you never shied away from. If anything, you adored it. And while he couldn’t love his own nose, knowing you did filled him with warmth. You always brought brightness and sunshine to his dark and twisted world.
As you watched Buggy stare at the finished product with an expression you couldn’t see clearly, your interest got the better of you. The kitchen door released a tattling creak when you tried to gain a better view of the kitchen show. Thankfully Buggy did not have his knives on hand, but the glare he threw at the entrance was sharp enough to sting. His face softened when he realized it was you, before hardening back into a scowl that was equal parts annoyed at being interrupted and embarrassed that you found him.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” he chided, sending his hands over to push you out and close the door. Anticipating that he would do that, you ducked the flying appendages and slipped inside.
“I could say the same about you.” Buggy knew your comment was true. Despite being the captain, the kitchen was not his usual scene. “What are you up to anyways?”
Despite the innocent tone behind your question, the twinkling in your eyes told Buggy that you already knew the answer. You walked closer and looked at the cake, missing the wince that flashed on Buggy’s face. It looked alright, but it was not at all like he envisioned.
“It looks good. The cherries were a great idea,” you said in earnest.
“Don’t lie,” Buggy snipped. Agitation bristled in his body, feeling scratchy and uncomfortable. Every muscle was fighting the impulse to throw out the cake and act like he hadn’t wasted hours creating something so far below his usual standards.
“It’s awful! A disgrace! The shitty frosting isn’t smooth and it’s full of crumbs. It’s too sweet and I used all the sugar so I can’t make more.” The tirade increased in pitch as he continued, the tension in his body constricting his throat. The frown on your face slowed his monologue.
“Are you serious? This looks like one of those cakes you buy at a high end patisserie in the fancy part of town. People pay a lot of money for rustic cakes and fresh fruit.” Flattery was always guaranteed to uplift Buggy when he was in a bad mood, but these were genuine compliments that you shared with such conviction and admiration. A flush crept across Buggy’s face and tickled his ears at the intensity and sincerity of your praise.
“O-of course! I knew that, I just wasn’t sure if it was your style.” Yeah, sure, that’s what he actually meant.
“So it’s for me?”
“Who else would I do this for?” He responded quickly, since you already knew the cake was yours.
“I was going to give it to you later, but you ruined the surprise,” Buggy continued, rolling his eyes in mock annoyance. He slid the cake towards you and finished with a surprisingly gentle, “happy birthday.”
Although he was supposed to be showering you with gifts on your birthday, the radiant smile you gave was definitely a gift to him. He couldn’t tell if he wanted to look away from the brightness or continue staring into the sun, in awe of the radiance.
“Thank you, I love it,” you said, the words heavy with appreciation. Buggy watched as you plucked the cherry from the center of the cake and popped it into your mouth with a wink, feeling as though his heart was replaced with a bumbling moth, fluttering everywhere and bumping into everything. It was probably drawn to your brilliance, just as he was.

For the Braised Fried Fish Maw Seafood Treasure Soup, the staff portioned it into ten smaller bowls before serving it to us. Not sure if it is because I am holding a camera, but my bowl came with more chunks of crab meat and fish maw. Basically, a seafood soup thickened with starch so the ingredients seem to be suspended/frozen in the soup. Black vinegar and white pepper accompanied this soup so feel free to add some to it.
Tumblr media
Well, the Roasted Crispy Chicken with Prawn Crackers was warm and tender to eat, it however wasn’t crispy at it. And just like everywhere else in Singapore, they referred to this deep-fried chicken as a roasted chicken. Sprinkle a bit of the salt & pepper before putting it into the mouth. A lacklustre dish but thank goodness, the prawn crackers were crispy though.
Tumblr media
This Steamed Hybrid Garoupa in Hong Kong Style was cut into sections just before they served it to us. This hybrid grouper is probably a cross between the giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and brown-marbled grouper or tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) and given the Dragon Tiger Grouper (龙虎斑) name. The fish got to be very fresh to be steamed and cooked with just a simple condiment of soya sauce, julienned spring onions and cilantro leaves for garnish. The end result, sweet springy flesh with collagen like skin that is so good to eat.
Tumblr media
The Braised Whole 10-Head Abalone with Sea Cucumber and Spinach was up next but the process of waiting for the next dish to be served was a long one as in-between the hosts are showing us video stories of the newly married couple and plus the live singing by the friends and band. Ten pieces each of the abalone and sea cucumber sitting atop a bed of blanched Popeye’s favourite green vegetable. Why 10 you may ask? Because a table usually seat ten people so the food portions are divided equally so each get a piece of everything (for the expensive ingredients that is). The only complaint for this dish is that the spinach is on the bitter side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like an overturned basket or nest, spilling out Deep-Fried Prawns with Black Truffle Mayonnaise Sauce. If there is anything to change for the presentation, I would move the red and green coral lettuces from under the eatable nest and placed it in the nest for a more dramatic effect. Anyway, these truffle gratings lend an aromatic and earthy fragrances to the classic mayo prawns topped with orange flying fish roe. My colleague and I detected a mild spicy hint of wasabi in it but another colleague said it is from the truffle and mayo combo. Differences aside, this is one dish I won’t mind having again.
Tumblr media
I always love this noodle served at the end of the dinner courses just before dessert. The Braised Ee-Fu Noodles with Yellow Chives and Straw Mushrooms is a usual staple at wedding due to the fact it is also known as longevity noodles (寿面). Normally, I would consume more than a bowl of the yi mein (伊面) but that night I was already quite stuffed from the dishes served and I was leaving room for dessert. :D
Tumblr media
By the time the last dish was up and the clock was ticking closer to 11pm. The warm Teochew Yam Paste with Gingko Nut and Coconut Milk with its gooey and smooth yam (taro) paste and whole gingko nuts smothered in thickened coconut milk is bursting with sweetness and a great comfort to many of us Singaporeans. I liked the fact that the chef tuned the sugar level to just sweet enough as I preferred mine not too saccharine. Anyway, I just had to ask for another bowl as it was just too good to pass up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dinner is now over and after shaking hands with the groom, bride and their respective parents, it is time to head to the train station to catch the train home.

But what if… Georgiy Kain as secret admirer 👁️👄👁️
I want to believe it would be kinda sweet and somehow tempting, even. Idk I just love his velvety voice and royal demeanor.
Everyone thinks I am joking when I say that I want that 77y old man BUT I REALLY DO WANT HIM.
Fuck, can you imagine? THE Judge himself. He's the only person in game who corrects the bachelor! Daniil gets a history fact wrong and Georgiy doesn't let it slide and calls him out, embarrassing Daniil in the middle of his own "I'm smarter than you" speech.
The fact he spends time in his workshop? moulding designs out of clay, carving marble and stone, with a hammer and chisel. Even woodwork, too! He was studying a tree branch on one of the tables.
Tumblr media
Especially how beautiful his workshop is, it has a glass roof. His wing of the crucible is the most appealing to me by a far margin. Just look at this view!
Tumblr media
Like he has a hobby beyond his work?? that is so attractive omfg.
I have a headcanon that he even made this statue in the crucible courtyard. The way it's reaching for the sky, humanity breaking out of its cocoon and surpassing the larva stage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Georgiy Kain is very regal. A grandiose man in every sense. When he speaks the whole room quiets down, his words force you to pay attention and wait your turn.
The way he's firm with his jurisdictions, he doesn't humour any tardiness, all legal cases are nullfied if the necessary papers aren't delivered and handed to him within the day. Immediately casting his judgment the very same hour.
He forces the town legal system to stand on its toes, to straighten its back, and to work as efficiently as possible. Perfection is the minimum standards and he expects nothing less. Everyone adheres to The Judge's words. Remember how he lifted quarantine just by a wave of his hand during the marbles nest? How Dankovsky's orders become nought against his own in the eyes of the masses.
Even the game developers describe him with reverence and awe.
A judge, philosopher and thinker, but above all, a Smith, a Sculptor. Following Simon’s death, he’s become the main embodiment of the Kain idea, the builder and creator: the Crucible is his crucible. This is why we see him in his workshop, engaged in quite literal sculpting; this is why he’s dressed like an architect. He has the large hands of someone who works with stone and clay.
"The Crucible is his Crucible"
People might have studied philosophy, but Georgiy Kain IS a philosopher. He is the one thinking, truly thinking about the meaning. While people follow in the footsteps of others and dictate their morals based on the laws made by the ones who came before them, Georgiy Kain creates his own ideas from scratch. Every single law the town has, he made himself. he pushed as many boundaries as the kin allowed him to, then asked for more.
He isn't satisfied with simple answers, he doesn't want the easy way out, he doesn't settle.
Subjectivity bores him. It is just a dull excuse for the lack of progress. He doesn't view humans as separate individuals but as a whole, as humankind. An organ working in unison, slowing down and forgetting its purpose, getting lazy, wasting time.
It's in need of repair, of an epiphany, a miracle to get the wheels turning again.
Humanity is simply a subject for his great design.
What differentiates him from the passive dreamers is how he is a working man first and foremost, a builder at heart. He plans, he executes and he achieves results.
Georgiy does not sit and wait around for anyone, be it time or mortal. He doesn't marinate his brain in champagne and tales of saints and knights like Eva, neither does he waste away and water his talents down with alcohol and stimulants like the Stamatins.
That's the major flaw of the utopians. Very little gets done when you're sitting at the mountian top with your head in the clouds. That's why the Kains are a necessary evil to them. They tear them apart, then build them back from the ground, they direct them towards a purpose, and they harden and pressure them into diamonds so they may truly shine.
Without the Kains, the utopians unravel and fall apart. Sensitive souls and vision cursed minds; they're not fit for the crude real world. An average mind cannot see their potential. They'll be left behind.
That's why each of them has a role to play. Victor, the pragmatic aristocrat, the cunning diplomat. Simon, both the miracle and the designer, a living proof of the concept he invented.
And Georgiy, the builder and sculpter, the executor, the final judge.
Character analysis over, x reader below.
Georgiy doesn't love; he obsesses.
He doesn't hate, and he doesn't fear. He studies, and he analyses.
When you inevitably catch his attention, make his eyes drift to you across the room, steal the focus from his mind for brief seconds. He immediately asks "why?"
He doesn't brush it aside. Nothing is a coincidence. Are you another unpolished gem hidden in the mud? A new candidate utopian for the Kains to add to their collection when they depart to eden?
No. It's different. The obsession he feels is shifting. It's not in stasis; it's fluid and swirling. Painting the corners of his mind, pouring down his thrown, flooding his heart.
It tasted... like the necter of the gods.
A lover isn't something he can afford, it's not feasible within the current logistics of the grand plan. His brother–simon–has been restless as of late, the focus is ready.
...this body will not be his own for very long.
But Georgiy doesn't give up. If something doesn't work out the first time around, then approaching it from a different direction is the next step.
His infatuation would prove to be a distraction if left unattended, and so loving you from far away was the next best thing. An equilibrium to balance back the scales with.
Becoming your secret admirer, the title is a little juvenile for his taste, but it will do. Falling in love at his age and wisdom felt a little juvenile as a whole, after all.
The letters he writes you help sate his appetite, quinch the ache in his heart. Cursive handwriting and scented papers. The poems he spins for you, talking of your virtues and grace, your innocent sins, your sensitive soul.
Georgiy starts documenting his thoughts down in notebooks and papers. The more sensual poems he decided against sending and instead kept for his personal indulgence, the wish fulfilment fantasies of you he notes down, the details and discoveries he finds out about you the more fate makes you two cross paths.
Even the courier doesn't have the slightest idea where all these letters keep coming from, only that they're addressed to your resident. They don't know who the sender is, when you question them about it..
Georgiy isn't suffocating with his love, he realises how easily a sweet admirer can spiral into an obnoxious stalker. So he sends them out on calculated schedules.
Sometimes, you receive a flower with them, sometimes a full bouquet. Once during your birthday, it was a box with a very intricately designed vase. You run your fingers against the scouplted design, you press your thumb against the fingerprint at the bottom, feel the one-of-a-kind lines against your own.
His hands must be callused, each of the three Kain brothers are. But for different reasons. Victor's clocksmithing and precise handing of delicate tools made the tips of his thin fingers the most bruised, the hand becomes softer the lower you move down.
Georgiy's arm had aged skin with prominent viens, bigger hands with a rough texture throughout all of palm. A firm grip came naturally to him from handling stones and wood. The knuckles thicker, the nails trimmed and clean. Fingers used to handle bigger and heavier tools, blunt and sharp alike.
Nerves worn with time from handling the clay furnace. Perfected coordination and trained restraint to spread out the glaze evenly on the clay, to push the knife at the prime position so it slides through the wooden branch like butter.
Splintered, calluses, and bruised hands are the norm for him.
He must imagine how you'd react to his touch, to the unusual feeling of the rough texture against your skin. Would you pull away from surprise? would you lean into his touch? Would you be intrigued by every bruise and trace your fingers alongside the stitched lines on his palm, enjoying the texture and comparing your own hand size to him.
Georgiy would let you do whatever you want, like obliging a curious cat. His eyes may be hardened as he simply observes you from above, but he doesn't pull away or tell you to stop.
Maybe you figured out who the secret admirer was.
Maybe it was a hunch. Georgiy wouldn't deny it if you ever confronted him about it, but he wouldn't handfeed you the answer either. You need to figure it out and explain your theory for him to consider you worthy of the truth.
He only asks you one question: Do you want him to stop?
That's all he has to say. He doesn't explain himself, and he doesn't waste his breath.
The letters are still sent, except that he signs his name this time. If you ask for more, he offers to read the poems for you, but only if you join him for breakfast early in the morning.
He doesn't do nighttime or evenings; those are work times.
That's how most of your meetings are conducted, in his workshop at the early dawn. You sit and watch him work. Sometimes, he tells you stories and shares his ideals. It's so easy to get lost in his valvety voice. The firm tone alone demands your attention.
Suddenly, you're in a trance, content with sitting there like a domesticated bird at his side, docile and attentive. Listening to his every word, learning from his lessons, and believing in his notions. Taking every word of wisdom that he spares you to heart, even if you're the kind of person who only does what they want. The way he phrases them and explains them logically, simply can't be argued with.
You agree with him without realising it, even when try not to, he speaks what you think, you begrudgingly accept it. Because saying no would be lying to yourself.
He draws you in effortlessly, impresses you without trying, and you find yourself coming back more and more. Subconsciously, you seek his approval and affection.
And his affection... oh his affection makes you feel like the sun at the centre of the world. It makes you feel like you're truly something, a muse, a scholar and a soldier all at once.
Georgiy Kain is kingly by nature, surpasses your expectations at every turn. You thought his ways would be those of tradition and old-school but he's much more progressive and eccentric than you ever thought.
And you're the pretty bird he trained to eat out of his hand.

I was tagged by the ever-lovely @druidx to complete a writing exercise from this post; specifically the Paint a picture of a character by describing their bedroom exercise.
Tagging in @davycoquette as requested and also @ashirisu, @lexiklecksi and @sparrow-orion-writes as I think you guys will be interested in seeing this.
Situated in a pocket dimension leading off from the office space at the very top of the Wizard's tower, the bedroom of Selene Frigidwake paints a far more personable picture of the Grand Magus of Toreguarde than her office might suggest. As soon as the door is opened, you are hit with a wash of ozone with a faint whiff of sulphur and petrichor. You might even see some down and shed pinion feathers drift towards your feet, depending on if the maid has been by to clean yet. The space inside the door seems noticeably larger than it ought to be, given the dimensions of the tower from the outside, and incredibly well-lit. There is a constant low-level hum at the threshold, which ceases the moment it is crossed and the air within is charged with magical static. The whole room, much like the office it is attached to thrums with arcane power. Those who have the ability to see into the magical weave may be able to discern the various arcane locks and traps inlaid into the door and floor, and only those with the keenest senses can detect the other, more mundane traps which have been hidden in amongst the lock and hinges.
Directly ahead of the door sits a large, polished mahogany four-poster bed with curtain rails, upon which are alighted heavy, velvet curtains in a deep blue colour, tied back with purple, silk rope. Despite the clutter that litters the rest of the room, the bedsheets are neatly arranged and the comforter folded to sit along the bottom of the mattress. The goose feather pillows are plumped and set accordingly and the cushions that were 'donated' by the tower's staff are artfully arranged atop them.
The bedside cabinets have a drawer and a small cupboard each, all of which have locks. The top of the left hand table is stacked high with a handful of books, alongside a pitcher and glass; the glass contains water that has been halfway drunk and left to sit. The right hand table is littered with various, small objects; pieces of copper wire, feathers from various species of bird, a pouch of silver powder. Basically, a bunch of spell components that have been dumped and half-forgotten.
Two small, gothic style windows are set into the back wall on either side of the bed, while a larger, circular window is set into the wall on the right, allowing sunlight to flood into the room during the day and affording a stunning view of the city at all times. A smaller, latched window is inset into this, and is usually kept open to allow for airflow and for Selene's familiar, Chrackle, to come and go as he pleases. Underneath the window is a small desk, covered in feathers and parchment with a large inkpot and a quill made from the tail feather of a magpie. The parchment is covered in notes and diagrams, mainly outlining various magical circles and equations, though some pieces of crumpled parchment appear to be letters; half-written and tossed carelessly aside.
On the left hand wall is a large, marble fireplace, with an ornate fireguard, all of which have been crafted by dwarven hands. Three brass, elven-crafted candle-holders sit atop the lintel of the fireplace, but the candles have never been lit. A large wingback chair upholstered in the same blue velvet as the curtains sits to one side of the fireplace, atop which lies a large, leather-bound book. On the other side of the fireplace is a floor to ceiling bookcase, filled with books on various arcane subject matters.
A large hat stand sits just behind the door as it swings inward, atop which is a messy cluster of sticks and various pieces of metal interwoven with one another. The nest is filled in with moss and down and various pieces of cutlery, coins of various denominations and other shiny objects are carefully placed within. Another door to the side of the hat stand leads to a small water closet, containing a toilet and sink, with a set of washcloths and towels set into a cabinet just behind the door. There is also enough room for a small, freestanding bathtub, that looks as though it has never been used.

Little Top Gun(ish)/Marauders Fic incoming...
“Here’s how this plays out.” Air Vice Marshal Minerva McGonagall states to the room at large. Gaze unwavering as she braces ringless hands across the cool marble table top. “We have our three fighter pilots, as previously detailed to you all in their evaluation and history files, marshaled to our base northwest of Thurso along the Brims coastline and our priority center there, Hogsmeade. At which time, we’ll inform them of the current situation and have them introduced to their French counterparts, whom also, shall join them in Thurso. The team of six fighter pilots will train as unit for the duration of four weeks, at which point we assess their compatibility as a squadron and initiate them into the Horcrux Project. By the deadline of July 31st, MI5 in co-operation with the Royal Marine and Royal Airforce will have all resources necessary to undertake the downfall of these extremists.”
There’s an underlying tension which exists in briefing rooms. Minerva wonders briefly whether or not it ever truly leaves the space, or if the foreboding atmosphere lingers like an unattainable gamble. Not one commanding officer enters into these rooms without some form of trepidation bubbling within them as they await the inevitable delivery of complications and long off outcomes. Whilst there could be some comfort to be found in the familiar and to be expected routine of such briefings, it solemnly brings anyone any comfort. Briefings such as those, Minerva could at least claim to be used to. Having the Foreign Secretary currently sat in the room however, was a different ballpark to be messing in. Though as Vice Air Marshal the matter of acquaintance with such figures came with the territory.
The village of Waddington in Lincolnshire seems the last location imaginable to be host to many of Britain’s highest ranked military officials. Yet inside the intelligence base founded in 1916 to establish intelligence links for the duration of World War I, many lives have been calculated and sacrificed by the people in suits whom seldomly face any true risk to their own lives. It’s a demeaning system when one thinks about it. How easily others’ lives are offered up to the front line. Placed in scenes which rarely provide a safe return home. A sacrifice, some would deem it, self-offering sacrifice of the men, women and people who offer their greatest internal value, their life, in the hope of giving others a brighter future.
It's these decisions McGonagall suffers deliberating on most. The battle-hardened frowns and somber expressions worn by many of her comrades which surround her at the table of marble. Those people, the ones she looks upon now and see the internal struggle they too endure day in and day out, offering up lives for the sake of petty disagreements and struggles, which more often than not would be avoided if only people learnt to communicate effectively and without pride.
“I believe the mission brief states the names of the pilots chosen by each respective country?” Admiral Kingsley states from where he’s seated furthest away from where Minerva stands.
“Indeed. The FAF have sent their profiles of the three pilots, Lieutenant Evan Rosier, Lieutenant Dorcas Meadowes and Commander Regulus Black.”
“Black? Sirius’s Blacks brother? Is that wise having siblings placed within this team? For a mission of such high importance this seems a prime way of encouraging personal bias.”
“Commander Sirius is most certainly one of the RAF’s chosen fighter pilots. To have him not be one of our three would only weaken our chances of success. The Black brothers will cooperate not because of any sworn brotherhood that may or may not exist between them but rather for the sake of their nations and the people of Europe. Simple as that Admiral.” Minerva replies in a clipped tone. Having known placing the two infamous brothers into this squadron would be similar to intentionally stirring a hornets nest, it was fact beyond question that both brothers possessed flying capabilities nigh impossible to rival. Sirius, despite his ego Minerva thought tiredly, was one of the most naturally gifted fighter pilots she’d known in her forty seven years of military service.
“And who else,” Admiral Scrimgeour mused in his west London drawl, “from the RAF has been put forth?”
“Lieutenant Lily Evans and Commander James Potter.”
“Potter and Black, you’ve got to be joking Minerva!”
“I most certainly am not, Commodore.” Minerva answered cooly back to Commodore Sinistra. “Should we wish to dispel this rising threat to our national security, as well as that of greater Europe, then only our best shall do. We can have no more than six air crafts airborne in order for our enemy’s honing devices to not detect us through our newly innovated radar scrambler. Three British pilots, and three French.”
“Surely there must be better choices than Black and Potter? Keep one if you must but surely their antics upon their last international mission when placed in the same squadron ensured that there not be a repeat!” Kingsley spoke out this time.
“Should we wish to succeed we need our best, I hardly think any of you could fly better than those pilots now could you? This is not up for discussion anyhow. Our pilots have been signed off and approved and shall arrive at Thurso as marshalled on Monday at seventeen hundred. Is that understood?”
A general muttering of agreement was heard around the table. Minerva made sure to watch as each official nodded in turn before she was finally satisfied.
National security was her job and if reuniting the estranged brothers was what it took to stop this brewing war before it could truly begin and start to clock a body count, then that was what would have to be done. War didn’t halt to mend broken bonds, it raged on whilst everyone entrapped in its grasp frantically sought to survive it. Relationships could be bound or broken amidst its throws, no amount of training could erase the instinct to protect loved ones yet she’d ask that of her pilots if this was to be the price. She couldn’t risk the security of her country, not of her people and homeland, the needs of the few would not outweigh the needs of the many. A philosophy Minerva had sworn to herself in a decade long since past, one she held onto through all her trials and tribulations faced in a position such as hers. She would ask of these brothers to mend, perhaps not entirely, but enough so that they could encapsulate the meaning of squadron. Of equals, of partners faced with odds no betting person would bid on. She would ask it, no, order it from them, and hope secretly and desperately, that neither young man would end as a casualty.

Elevate Your Space: A Guide to Selecting Armchairs, Sideboard Furniture, and Coffee Tables
Your home's ambiance is a reflection of your style and personality, and key pieces like armchairs, sideboard furniture, and coffee tables play pivotal roles in shaping this ambiance. These elements not only serve functional purposes but also contribute significantly to the overall aesthetic appeal of your living space. Whether you're redesigning your existing décor or starting anew, here's a comprehensive guide to help you select the perfect armchairs, sideboard furniture, and coffee tables for your home.
Armchairs: Armchairs aren't just seats; they're statements. Here's what to consider when choosing armchairs:
Style and Design: Armchairs come in various styles, from sleek and modern to classic and traditional. Consider the overall aesthetic of your room and select armchairs that complement your existing décor. Mixing and matching styles can create an eclectic yet curated look.
Comfort and Support: Comfort is paramount when choosing armchairs. Look for seats with ample cushioning and proper back support. Test out different styles to find chairs that feel comfortable for lounging or reading.
Size and Proportion: Ensure that the size and proportion of your armchairs complement the rest of your furniture and the size of your room. Oversized chairs can overwhelm a small space, while petite chairs may get lost in a larger room. Aim for balance by choosing chairs that are proportional to your space.
Sideboard Furniture: Sideboards blend practicality with style, serving as both storage solutions and decorative accents. Here's what to keep in mind when selecting sideboard furniture:
Storage Needs: Evaluate your storage requirements before choosing a sideboard. Consider what items you'll be storing, such as dinnerware, linens, or other household essentials. Opt for a sideboard with ample storage options, such as drawers, cabinets, or shelves, to keep your space organized.
Style and Finish: Sideboards come in a variety of styles, from rustic farmhouse to mid-century modern. Select a style that harmonizes with the overall aesthetic of your room. Pay attention to the finish of the sideboard, whether it's natural wood, painted, or lacquered, to ensure it complements your existing furniture.
Functionality: Consider how you'll utilize your sideboard on a daily basis. If you plan to use it as a serving station for entertaining, prioritize a sideboard with a spacious top surface. For additional workspace in your kitchen or dining area, look for a sideboard with a built-in countertop extension.
Coffee Tables: Coffee tables are more than just surfaces for your morning brew; they're central to your living room's layout. Here's what to consider when selecting coffee tables:
Size and Shape: Choose a coffee table size and shape that complements the scale of your seating area. Rectangular or oval tables are versatile options, while round tables soften the lines of a room. Aim for a table that is about two-thirds the length of your sofa for optimal proportion.
Material and Finish: Coffee tables come in various materials and finishes, from wood to metal, glass to marble. Consider the existing elements in your room and select a material that harmonizes with your décor. Matching the finish of your coffee table to other furnishings creates a cohesive look.
Functionality: Think about how you'll use your coffee table. If you frequently entertain guests, choose a table with additional storage or a lower shelf for books and magazines. Some coffee tables even offer built-in features like lift tops or nesting stools for added versatility.
Conclusion: Selecting armchairs, sideboard furniture, and coffee tables allows you to infuse your personal style into your living space while ensuring functionality and cohesion. By considering factors such as style, comfort, and storage needs, you can choose pieces that enhance the ambiance of your room and reflect your unique taste and personality. With the right combination of furniture, you can transform your space into a welcoming and stylish haven that invites relaxation and enjoyment.
