On this day, the original Mario Kart 8 video game released 10 years ago exclusively on the Wii U in North America!
Sadly, since 2023, the original game and its DLC have been de-listed from the Nintendo eShop from the short-lived Wii U home console, as well as its online functionality through Nintendo Network ending this year (on April 8th, 2024).
However, its enhanced port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017) is available now on Nintendo Switch, with improvements on its battle modes and online matchmaking options, with the additional of adding 96 new and retro tracks as paid DLC over the course of 2023!
The chronology for these will be based on which course I feel inspired to do the most. Not sure how many of these I'll do, but the next one could be anything from 64, DS, 8, etc.
In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, if a racer slips on a banana peel and hits a wall at the finish line, a glitch occurs whereby the game will count the racer as having completed a lap every 2 frames, or around 0.03 seconds.
As SNES Donut Plains 1 has the closest item boxes to the starting line, allowing a banana to be obtained the fastest of all tracks, it can be completed the fastest using this glitch. In the footage, Toad takes 2 seconds to get a banana and then a few more fractions of a second to complete all five laps, finishing in 2.21 seconds. Note the times on the summary at the end.
