Band of Brothers Ages: IRL vs. Actors
Did you know that according to a 1947 study, almost half the men who served in WWII were still under age 26 by the end of the war?
What this is : A (very long) post comparing the ages of the actors in Band of Brothers vs. the IRL figures they are portraying.
Background: Did I need to do this? No. Did anyone ask for this? Also no. Did I do it anyway? Yes.
Disclaimers: This is SUPER approximate for the most part. I based IRL ages off of D-Day unless otherwise noted, and actor ages off of January 1, 2000, the year filming took place (the latter is where the most variation will be because I didn't try to figure out what month filming started). I also didn't fact-check birthdays beyond googling. Most are sourced from the Band of Brothers and Military Wikis on fandom.com, Wikipedia, and IMDb.
I broke them up into rough categories, which are, again, approximate. I know I often forget how young the real life people were here, and this was a good reminder of that. I also found it interesting to see which actors were actually younger than their roles!
Check it all out under the cut ⬇️

Today is Marlene’s birthday. Today is the worst day of her life. Today is also the best day of her life. The past few years have been the best of her birthday’s but when she wasn’t going to Hogwarts and didn’t have friends to come to her house, it was bad. Her parents were drunk all the time, her oldest brother was too busy taking care of everyone, the other two oldest were off at college, and her younger brother wasn’t good at dates, so she never had anyone to celebrate with. Even all her friends forgot besides three of them, James, Peter, and Barty.
James, Peter, Marlene, and Barty all grew up in the same neighborhood and always pulled pranks on the other kids, especially on one of their birthday’s when the rest forgot. They were best friends at a young age. Marlene and James’s parents were friends before they were born, so they’ve known each other since they were babies, as well as Marlene’s brothers, Maxwell, Matthew, Mason, and Mitchell.
James and Barty met when they had a pure-blood meeting and the kids had to come, as well. James didn’t connect with anyone there besides Barty and he was too shy of a kid at that age to go up to anyone. Barty came up to him. Barty began coming around James’s house after that, he met Marlene, and he didn’t care about blood-status like his father did. He didn’t tell Bartemius about her being a half-blood either, and when his family became blood-traitors, he lied and said he went to hang out with pure-bloods.
James, Marlene, and Peter met in Elementary school when they all made it into the advanced class. James walked up to Peter, just like he did everyone in that class, but Peter was the first one to actually respond to him and laugh at that. Marlene has a feeling that Peter had a crush on him which is why he laughed in the first place. She even bets he still does, years later.
Peter, James, and Barty were always there for her when her family wasn’t. Even if they couldn’t make it in person, they still sent cards and presents. The last few years, though, they threw a party for her and surprised her with it. What’s different this year, she has a girlfriend. One she cares about very much and won’t let anyone hurt her.
Marlene is reading a book in her room when her door bursts open. “Surprise!” Peter, James, Barty, and Dorcas exclaim.
Marlene laughs from behind her book. “How did you get in here?”
“I stole a key from one of your brothers and put it back after duplicating it without him even noticing.”
“James!” Marlene laughs.
Dorcas smiles and walks up to her, pulling her up from the chair. “Come on, we have a surprise for you.” Dorcas leads her outside her bedroom door, and she gasps when she sees it. All her friends in her living room with a banner hanging over the doorway ‘Happy Birthday, Marls!’ it says.
She gasps once again when her brothers walk in the door with presents. “Guys,” She smiles.
“Happy birthday, baby sis.” Mason says hugging her.
Marlene smiles even wider when Maxwell, Mitchell, and Matthew come to hug her as well. “I love all of you, so much.” She whispers. “So much.” She whispers even quieter.
“We love you, too.”
“Alright, alright. Quit with the sappiness.” Barty says. “let’s get this party started!”
Evan walks up to her with a bottle of vodka in hand and gives it to her. “How did you get this?”
He lifts his finger to her mouth and says, “Shh. Don’t worry about it.” And walks away.
Marlene turns to Barty and was about to ask when he interrupted her. “Don’t worry about it.” And he walks away as well.
“They did something illegal, didn’t they?” She asks James.
James sighs. “Probably.”
Dorcas grabs her arm and pulls her to the makeshift dance floor. “Let’s dance.” Marlene laughs the whole night, and it doesn’t quite down until she’s fast asleep in her bed with Dorcas beside her.
In the morning Dorcas will wake up before her and make her breakfast in bed, to make up for her not being able to yesterday. And then they’ll fall asleep together again and again until school starts, and they’ll continue doing so until they have to go home for the summer and then they’ll do it all over again until they graduate and can wake up next to each other every day until the end of time.

A Goode Year 2022
I’m doing this a bit early coz I won’t be around much over the holidays.  Every year I sit down to write these thinking - hmm - we didn’t see enough of Matthew Goode this year.  [NEVER enough]  But then each year I’m surprised by how busy he is.
January was all about season 3 of A Discovery of Witches.
Tumblr media
[📷 Sky]
Sadly it was a shorter season due to Covid but we got to see Matthew Goode back in the suit and cashmere for Prof Clairmont once more.  And he held babies.  😁
Tumblr media
Stop animation ‘The House’ was released on Netflix -
Tumblr media
[📷 Nexus]
...  and we all watched and wondered what the hell it was all about.  Matthew played this guy called Raymond -
Tumblr media
Coz you just look at Raymond’s felty face and your first thought is ‘Matthew Goode’? Nope.  Anyway this got quite a following from the stop animation fans and won some noms and awards so all goode.
Also in January we got our very first glimpse of Matthew Goode in ‘The Offer’ when this little teaser dropped -
Tumblr media
[📷 Paramount +]
There he is - BOB!
Tumblr media
More promos appeared later in January including this gem -
Tumblr media
[📷 Miller Mobley]
February gave us more of Matthew Clairmont in his sharp jackets and cuddlesome cashmere. 🤤
Tumblr media
We also got the amazing trailer for ‘The Offer’ and all of our hopes were fulfilled when we got our first look at Matthew’s awesome portrayal of Robert Evans.
Tumblr media
The best thing was that other people noticed it too and at last Matthew got some love for his acting skills from the critics.
In other news - The Wine Show moved to it’s new home on AcornTV AND Matthew surprised us by attending the London Premiere of ‘The Duke’.
Tumblr media
He was obviously excited to be there and we loved seeing him in the flesh again.
‘The Duke’ was just what Brits returning to the cinema needed - an old fashioned Brit comedy drama.  Matthew shone as ‘star’ barrister Jeremy Hutchinson and he was so convincing that he’d definitely be the one I’d call if I needed representing in court -
Tumblr media
In March we said a final farewell to ‘A Discovery of Witches’ 😢 but not before we got to see some adorable Matthew outtakes -
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Matthew was clearing out his wardrobe and putting a lot of goodies into the ‘Auction for Ukraine’.  It wasn’t until later that we found out that the idea and most of the organising had been started by Matthew and that he roped in some high profile friends to help. 👏
April was wall to wall ‘The Offer’ promotion.  We haven’t seen Matthew do so much promotion for a project since 2014 so this was heaven for Goode fans -
Tumblr media
So many funny and engaging interviews to enjoy but I swear if I hear him say ‘timbre’, ‘cadence’, ‘YouTube’ and ‘wormholes’ ever again I might have to scream.
Better still - Matthew attended the LA premiere for ‘The Offer’ so we got another red carpet interview and even more new pics of him -
Tumblr media
[📷my edit from Extra TV youtube]
When ‘The Offer’ premiered on the 28th April - OMG Matthew was incredible as Robert Evans.  A stunning performance in every way.
The Bob show continued through May and we got more goode interviews and articles to enjoy.  Just going to highlight this one in the LA Times - https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2022-05-05/the-offer-paramount-cast-matthew-goode-robert-evans   coz of the gorgeous pictures by Dania Maxwell
Tumblr media
[📷 Dania Maxwell/LA Times]
Matthew and Sophie were also invited to the London premiere of ‘Top Gun’ - presumably by Miles Teller?  Anyway - he gave us a little wave on red carpet TV -
Tumblr media
[📷 screenshots from Red Carpet TV and Tristan Fewings]
At last we saw Matthew do another chat show!  In June he was a guest on NBC's ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ and joked about getting into American Football and trying to get X [R] rated movies from his local store as a kid ....
Tumblr media
Matthew attended the New York Premiere of ‘The Offer’ the next day -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[📷Michael Loccisano/Getty Images]
Paramount + launched in the UK later in June and Matthew introduced ‘The Offer’ to the audience -
Tumblr media
[📷 Mike Marsland/Dave J Hogan]
Matthew’s amazing work on the Auction for Ukraine was finally revealed in a fun guest appearance on The Chris Evans Radio Show.  We also got the first hint about his next project - with an acting hero 🤔
Tumblr media
[📷 Virgin Radio]
One of the top auction lots was a lunch hosted by Matthew and friends at Hide restaurant -
Tumblr media
[📷 Hide Restaurant]
Before Matthew headed off for his summer holidays in July he found time to guest on ‘This Morning’ with Alison and Dermot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He talked about how he nearly missed out on getting the part of Robert Evans due to visa issues 😱 and he confirmed that acting hero he would be working with was indeed Anthony Hopkins!
Matthew headed off to Greece for a family holiday but found time to take a selfie with some fans -
Tumblr media
[📷 Paul and Kerry Hulme - cropped for privacy]
July also brought us the official trailer for ‘Medieval’ and we got to see Matthew swaggering about in lavish cloaks and that glorious ginger hair -
Tumblr media
Matthew turned up with Hugh Bonneville at a Coldplay gig at Wembley arena in August -
Tumblr media
Medieval was released in September so we saw more of Matthew’s spectacular costumes and THAT hair -
Tumblr media
What happened in October?  Not a lot but in November we did get confirmation that Matthew would be working with Anthony Hopkins on the movie ‘Freud’s Last Session’.
Tumblr media
The movie will be based on the play by Mark St. Germain and Matthew will play C.S. Lewis.
So I think that brings us up to date.  It’s been a Goode year for showcasing Matthew’s superb acting skills with his perfectly crafted role as Robert Evans in ‘The Offer’ and watching him actually enjoy promoting a show has been a highlight for me.   But if I have to choose the best part of the Goode year - Matthew’s work in getting together the Auction for Ukraine needs a special mention - coz he sure won’t mention it.  He obviously worked really hard on calling in favours and getting things moving and as a result the Auction raised £838,900!  So well done Matthew and all of your friends who helped! 👏
