i know that it's at partly just that i do not generally post when i ride, but fang duobing, bounciest boy on the screen at all times, posting incredibly dramatically, is very funny and charming to me. he really wakes up and is like 'fuck yeah, every day is leg day, work them thighs!'

the saddest line in the trailer

at first I was too distracted by Stede's plunging neckline and gold earring to fully realize why this kept nagging at me but:

"I've been a failure my whole life."

and the way he says it:

as a matter of fact, because he fully believes it – it's an integrated part of his self-image

to comfort someone else (presumably), meaning that even though it is sort of similar to Ed's "I'm not a good person" from s1e6, this scene doesn't seem to be about Stede getting comforted – he is just throwing that line in there

with the follow-up line of "It's not so bad once you get used to it," because he is used to being called a failure by everyone around him, even when he was a kid, so much that he doesn't question it

and yeah, Stede fucks up a lot and can be a bit air-headed/naive and overestimates his abilities (Stede's super high confidence vs. shit self-esteem is a central part of his character), often to the detriment of himself and everyone around him, but his biggest "crime" growing up was simply that he was different and didn't live up to the norms of masculinity. and this is what caused him to be made to feel like a failure by the world around him.

idk it is just so sad that after everything that happened at the end of season 1, he still echoes his father's and the Badmintons' words when talking about himself (and his own "I'm not a pirate, I'm an idiot" from s1e1). he still has a lot of growth to do.

and while it's good that he embraces his own shortcomings (and I hope he stays a loser in many ways <3) and the show reinforces that you don't have to be perfect to be worthy of love/that you are worthy of love just as you are, it is just. idk SO SAD to hear him say that about himself so earnestly

but do you know who doesn't let Stede self-deprecate?

from telling Stede he isn't such a terrible pirate (at least he's alive), to not letting Stede call his own ideas stupid, Ed likes Stede for who he is WHILE not letting him talk bad about himself like that.

now we can't know who Stede is talking to in the scene in the trailer, just that it is someone with long dark hair:

and it could be someone else (to me it doesn't look quite like Ed's hair, but the quality/lighting makes it difficult to tell), but if it IS Ed, it has the potential for him to (once again) go against Stede's negative self-talk 😌

I am so interested to see how this scene plays out and I REALLY hope we get a scene mirroring the bathtub scene (even if it's not this one) but with the roles switched ✌️

i have been stewing in the hate crimes md content for almost a month now, why did nobody tell me that house's subconscious (the Amber hallucination) literally told him to tell wilson he loves him. that happened on my screen. i rewatched it 5 times with my volume all the way up bcs it felt like a fever dream. pain and repression show.

The fucking veterans' event. I'll never get over this. He needed to see Havers again but he didn't have the right qualifications. Experience had taught him the layout of the mansion however, so he snuck around the back, because he knew that reality expands beyond the established rules of engagement. He'd been shown that those rules would still be enforced though, so he stole a mark of the approved experiences—ones which he'd never had.

He enters the room, and the same way he was able to sneak into the house he sees there's a path through the crowd to reach Havers. But he is inattentive of his environment and draws attention to himself, causing him to be challenged to prove his belonging yet again—only this time, he has moved beyond the pale and is thus forced to follow through with evidence to back up his pretence. Of course, he has no experiences to pull from in that regard.

"The Captain" is nothing but a facade walling off a soft man from a hostile environment. He has no home to provide him shelter behind what appears to be the front door. Tearing it open is the equivalent of pulling a turtle from its shell; without it, he cannot weather the world.

So when they all push through uninvited, he perishes. His soft heart breaks from the strain of exposure.

Kicking in the front door reveals this unexpected sliver of actual reality, ungoverned by the rule book. The tables turn as now it is the others who are left fumbling for what to do, their legs cut out from under them when suddenly deprived of their precious rules.

Except for the officer who's seen both sides, who did build a lawful home, yet who also knows the Captain. He rushes forward to bridge the long established, newly exposed gap between reality and fiction. They are pulled together by the joint store they put in the truth, in spite of propriety. And possessing the means to do so, Havers will protect what he cares about, be that a people or a person.

He declares the impostor to be a peer in everything but name by demanding medical attention for him, and kneeling halfway to his level, he speaks with him as close to equals as the situation will allow them to be. He affirms the final truth which risks seeping out for everyone to see while still guarding it, wrapping a gentle bandage over the open wound to spare the Captain from bleeding out completely: I know.

And then, as a final comfort, in place of the impossibility of open affection, he redirects the Captain's hands to accept a part of his own shell that he willingly offers up to help rebuild the one which kept the Captain safe all these years, up until it was cruelly torn away in what was to become his final moments.

How starved is the man who can hide behind a swagger stick?

At long last, heteronormativity finally did kill the Captain. Nevertheless, Anthony affirmed that in the face of it, James did still exist, and despite the violations he faced, he had a right to do so on his own terms. He might never have become a hero, but he was always a brave man. His circumstances gave him no choice.
