Why did Bosch depict owls in his paintings?
For many of us, an owl is a symbol of wisdom. In Christian paintings however, the image of an owl had a completely different meaning.
Hieronymus Bosch (medieval painter, one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school) portrayed an owl in many of his paintings, sometimes bringing it in contexts to those who behaved insidiously or indulged in mortal sin.
The owl serves evil as a night bird and a predator, and symbolizes stupidity, spiritual blindness and the ruthlessness of everything earthly.
Some of the paintings depict hunting with owls, which was one of the medieval pastimes. The owl was both a bait and a hunter, which resembled the tricks of the devil.
An owl has the ability to see in the dark, as if able to see the truth in the dark side of being.

al things considered — when i post my masterpiece #1103
first posted in facebook august 22, 2022
andré bauchant -- "untitled [the gardener]" (1922)
"i sleep in late
another day
oh what a wonder
oh what a waste
it's a monday
it's so mundane
what exciting things
will happen today?
the yard is full of hard rubbish it's a mess and
i guess the neighbors must think we run a meth lab
we should amend that
i pull the sheets back
it's 40 degrees
and i feel like I'm dying
life's getting hard in here
so i do some gardening" ... courtney barnett
"bauchant's treatment of figures, frozen in attitudes indicating a certain awkwardness and as if enshrined in foliage, manifest a poetic and mysterious quality sometimes reminiscent of medieval paintings" ... nadine pouillon
"as i walked out in the mystic garden
on a hot summer day, hot summer lawn
excuse me, ma’am, i beg your pardon
there’s no one here, the gardener is gone" ... bob dylan
"bauchant's treatment of this figure, frozen in foliage, manifests a mysterious familiarity reminiscent of my friend Daniel Morgan" ... al janik
