US: New lung transplant algorithm error harmed critically ill patients

A new algorithm intended to fairly distribute lungs for transplants failed to properly account for blood type O patients, who can only receive lungs from type O donors.

This flaw led to significantly fewer transplants for type O patients in 2023. The Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) implemented the algorithm in March 2023, touting it as a fairer system, but an error allowed the simulation to inaccurately predict that type O patients could receive lungs from any blood type, disadvantaging them. 

The issue was identified in July 2023, and a correction was made in September. Initial reports indicated 35 fewer transplants for type O patients, but further analysis suggested the number could be as high as 138. 

This discrepancy has raised concerns about the transparency and effectiveness of OPTN's handling of the situation. 

Criticism has come from transplant surgeons and patients alike, urging OPTN to fully disclose the impact and prevent future errors. Despite the fix, there are ongoing concerns about potential disparities in transplant rates by blood type.
