From the outset Zoe, as the elder of the two, was accorded precedence. When they sat in state, her throne was placed slightly in advance of that of Theodora, who had always been of a more retiring disposition and who seemed perfectly content with her inferior status. I got a little carried away kind of lost the thread of this prompt, but here's 2K of pre-slash Geraskier!

8. going clothes shopping and trying on outfits for an event they’ll be attending together

“They’re just clothes, Jaskier,” Geralt says irritably, watching Jaskier retrieve the remains of his knapsack from the ichor-filled pond. The knapsack is shredded, brightly colored bits of clothes bobbing in the water.

“Just clothes?” Jaskier holds up his yellow doublet, which is splattered with black ichor, in dismay. “Geralt, this is every outfit I own! It’s all ruined!”

“Would you have preferred it to have gotten you?” Geralt jerks his chin at the dead kikimore, which is collapsed on the bank of the pond in a heap of limbs. It had been going for Jaskier when Geralt had thrown the knapsack at it to distract it. Kikimores don’t see well; he’d hoped the scent of Jaskier on the clothes would convince the beast it had snatched up an edible bard rather than a sack of cloth. The distraction had earned Geralt a precious few seconds to fetch his swords before the kikimore realized the deception and lunged for Jaskier again.

“Oh no,” Jaskier moans, pulling a sopping wet garment from the knapsack. Geralt can’t tell what color it used to be. “Fuck.”

“It’s just—”

“If you say it’s just a doublet, Geralt, I’m going to make you eat it.” Jaskier goes to bury his face in the ruined doublet then seems to think better of it. “This was the outfit I had custom-made for Prince Radovid’s birthday celebration next week.”

“You have other clothes.”

“This is the only one of my outfits not destroyed.” Jaskier spreads out his arms to show Geralt his light blue outfit. “This is two seasons out of date, Geralt! There’s a reason I only wear it when we’re in backwaters. Do you see these ruffles? Ruffles are considered terribly gauche nowadays. I can’t wear this to a prince’s birthday banquet! I’ll be laughed out of Redania, if not off the entire Continent.”

“You wouldn’t have worn anything to the banquet if you’d gotten torn apart by a kikimore,” Geralt can’t pretend to give a fuck about some ruined clothes, not when it could have been bits of his bard floating in the ichor-black water. Fripperies can be replaced, unlike Jaskier. “Anyway, there’s time to have something else made.”

“With what coin?” Jaskier demands, waving the ruined doublet around. “I spent most of my savings on this! I don’t have the funds to afford anything fine enough to wear to a banquet at the royal palace, especially not if it’s going to be a rush job.”

Geralt opens his mouth to reply, then is distracted by movement in the pond behind Jaskier. Fuck, how did he miss not one, but multiple kikimores? “Jaskier, get away from the water.”

“It’s no use,” Jaskier moans. “It’s all soaked anyway, what’s a little more water?”

“Jaskier!” Geralt lurches forward, dragging Jaskier back just as an adolescent kikimore comes bursting out of the water. After that, there’s no time to worry about clothes.

Geralt comes trudging into the room he’s sharing with Jaskier in Tretogor and is greeted by a sigh. Jaskier sits at the table, wearing his sole surviving breeches and one of Geralt’s own shirts, which hangs off his shoulders. Geralt’s interest would be piqued by the sight, if Jaskier didn’t carry such an air of misery as he hunches over a roll of parchment, quill in hand. As Geralt puts down his things, Jaskier sighs again.

“What’s the matter?” Geralt asks. Jaskier’s been sulking nonstop since his clothes were destroyed by the kikimore.

“I’m just figuring out how to phrase this letter informing Prince Radovid that I won’t be able to play at his birthday banquet in a way that won’t get me blackballed or beheaded.”

Geralt turns to him, dismayed. “You’re not playing at the banquet?” Normally, that would be something of a relief; he’s been dreading accompanying Jaskier to the party, which sounds like his worst nightmare. But he knows Jaskier was looking forward to this and it’s not like the bard to back out of a night of wine, women, and music.

“I’m going to tell him that I’m ill and hope that he doesn’t feel snubbed,” Jaskier says. “He has a week to procure my replacement, which should be plenty of time for a prince.”

“But you’re not sick. You’re fine.”

“I have nothing to wear, Geralt!” Jaskier looks up at him in exasperation. “You’ve never lived at court, so you don’t get it. Appearances are everything. For Radovid to have to replace the bard for his birthday feast at the last minute is an inconvenience. For him to have an unfashionable bard show up will just be embarrassing for him. People will wonder why the heir to the Redanian throne can’t get a better, more well-dressed bard. Radovid is not the kind of man you want to embarrass. He could ruin me. He will ruin me, if he feels I've disrespected him.”

Geralt doesn’t understand how the fuck Radovid would be embarrassed by Jaskier wearing ruffles, especially not so embarrassed that it could have repercussions for Jaskier. But there’s real distress in Jaskier’s eyes, not the affected horror he puts on so often. It would be easy to dismiss Jaskier as being dramatic, but it’s true that he understands court life better than Geralt ever could.

“Come on,” Geralt finds himself saying. “Put down your quill. We’re going out.”

Jaskier sighs. “My friend, as much as I would love to drink away my sorrows right now, I don’t think it’s going to help. Plus, I should save the little coin I have.”

“We’re not drinking away any sorrows.” Geralt grabs Jaskier by the scruff of his shirt and hauls him to his feet. “Come on.”

“Geralt, you can’t just manhandle me,” Jaskier says, but he lets Geralt haul him out the door nonetheless.

“A tailor?” Jaskier blinks up at the shop in front of them.

“I’m no expert, but I think that’s where you get new clothes made,” Geralt says dryly. “Unless you’d prefer the armorer down the road.”

Jaskier huffs out a laugh. “No, I don’t think wearing armor to the banquet will solve anything.”

“You’d be in less danger of getting stabbed.”

“That’s only happened once, you fiend,” Jaskier says. “And I’ve already told you, I can’t afford new clothes right now, especially not a rush job. I’ll have to make due with what I have until I return to Lettenhove for the winter.”

“Hm. Good thing I’m buying then.” At Jaskier’s wide-eyed look, Geralt feels a little sheepish. “I made some money selling the kikimores to an alchemist. Plus, I have the money from the leshen and katakan contracts. Should have enough to get you an outfit for the party, plus one or two everyday outfits, depending on how much we have to pay for the rush.”

“I’ll be able to pay you back,” Jaskier says, voice a bit wobbly. “Once I get paid for the banquet.”

“Don’t worry about it. I shouldn’t have let us make camp next to a kikimore-infested pond. This is the least I can do.”

As expected, Jaskier throws his arms around Geralt’s neck and clings for a long moment. Geralt endures the embrace the best he can, not enjoying the honeysuckle scent of Jaskier’s hair or the warm body pressed against his in the least.

“We going to go in, or are you going to wait until the banquet has come and gone?” Geralt finally asks.

Jaskier doesn’t let go of him. “You’re the best friend I’ve ever had, you know that?”

Geralt doesn’t know what to do with that. “You need better friends.”

“Not possible,” Jaskier says, but he lets go of Geralt and they head into the tailor’s shop.

The tailor is a friendly young woman who makes sympathetic noises when she hears about Jaskier’s close call with the kikimore—Jaskier really plays up how close he came to being the creature’s dinner—and offers to waive the rush fee. Jaskier chats with her as he selects two lengths of fabric, one in a deep red, the other a vibrant yellow. Jaskier seems perfectly pleased with both of his choices, but he doesn’t quite have that sparkle in his eye that he often gets when he gets a new outfit.

“Don’t you like them?” Geralt asks in an undertone when the tailor goes into the back to fetch her apprentice.

“Oh, it’s perfectly lovely,” Jaskier says. “And it’s very kind of her to waive the rush fee.”

“But?”

Jaskier laughs a little sadly. “It’s just, the outfit I was going to wear to the banquet was gorgeous, Geralt. I adored it. And there just isn’t any fabric here that pops like it did.” He looks down at the length of red fabric and sighs. “But it’s no matter. Both of these will suit perfectly well.”

Geralt is never going to be able to tell his brothers about this, he knows. They’ll never let him live it down.

After paying the first tailor for what will be Jaskier’s everyday outfits, they make their way to a second tailor’s shop, where the proprietor tells them flatly that he’s far too busy to put together an outfit in less than a week, no matter how much they pay him. Jaskier looks a little deflated as they make their way to the third shop, where the tailor spends the entire time they’re there staring at Geralt in open disgust. Despite the way he oohs and aahs over a length of lavender silk, Jaskier refuses to give the man his business  and leaves in a huff. 

“I think the red outfit will do nicely for the banquet,” Jaskier says as they make their way down the street. “Really, Geralt, there’s no need for all this—”

Geralt steers him into a fourth tailor’s shop before he can protest further. He can tell as soon as Jaskier lights up at the sight of the rows of fabric that they’ve found the right place.

Except, the elderly tailor, while as sympathetic as the first tailor, shakes his head. “I’m sorry, lad,” he says. “But I’m working on two other last-minute orders for the prince’s banquet this week. I just don’t have the time to take on another, not without working my apprentices round-the-clock.”

“Ah.” Jaskier’s shoulders sag. “Understandable.”

“That being said.” The tailor taps his chin. “I do keep a selection of outfits that weren’t paid for in the back for just this sort of occasion. There might be something there that will suit you?”

Jaskier smiles, but doesn’t look hopeful. “It might be worth a look. Thank you!” As the man shuffles away, he adds to Geralt in an undertone, “I know a handful of tailors who do this, and the outfits are never very good. I don’t know if it’s that people who don’t pay their tailor always have poor taste or if it’s that the outfits just weren’t up to snuff in the first place, but— Ah, you’re back!”

The tailor returns, pushing a rack laden with clothes. He looks between Jaskier and the rack, clucking his tongue. “Oh, this one isn’t right for your skin tone. And this one will be too short in the arms and legs and I don’t know if I have any more of this fabric. Bah, I don’t know why I still have this one. No one wears ruffles anymore.”

“No one indeed,” Geralt deadpans. He stands still so Jaskier can elbow him in the side, because he admittedly deserves it. 

“What about this one, my boy?” The tailor asks, holding up a doublet for inspection.

It’s the ugliest thing that Geralt has ever seen, a horrible, peacock feather-patterned doublet in swirling shades of green and blue. But Jaskier sucks in a delighted breath.

“Geralt!” He seizes Jaskier by the arm. “Melitele’s supple bottom, it’s perfect! Isn’t it perfect, Geralt?”

Geralt wonders if the Jaskier hit his head during the kikimore attack, but he nods. “It’s very… you, Jaskier.”

Jaskier barely seems to hear him; he only has eyes for the monstrosity in front of him. Geralt watches in bemusement as Jaskier tries on the outfit, making appreciative noises about the fabric, which the tailor claims to be the finest Nazairi silk money can buy. The outfit is a bit long in the arms and legs and loose in the waist, but the tailor assures Jaskier that he can find the time to make such minor alterations by the end of the day.

“It’s almost like it was made for you,” the tailor tells Jaskier warmly.

Jaskier turns to Geralt, eyes shining. “What do you think?”

Geralt thinks that the outfit looks like a flock of peacocks got chewed up by a basilisk and spat back out. But Jaskier is glowing, looking as excited as he did as the first time they stopped by a tavern and were greeted by a chorus of, “Toss A Coin.” He looks like a man who just fell in love at first sight. Geralt doesn’t want to say or do anything to wipe that expression off his face.

“It looks good,” he says and to his surprise, he’s not even lying.

Somehow, Jaskier’s smile grows even brighter.

“And here.” The tailor steps forward, holding up a black outfit with a pattern of silver stars. “If you need an outfit as well, Sir Witcher, I think this one will suit you quite nicely.”

As Jaskier makes a noise of pure glee, Geralt realizes that resistance is futile. Eskel and Lambert truly can never know about this.

Richard Hanania is one of my poster child writers for the "he is an complete idiot and also very smart" genre. I disagree with him on virtually everything, particularly core beliefs, but he nonetheless is an actual critical thinker who will come up with and explore interesting ideas, and so he is valuable to follow for exposure to good discussion from a world you are otherwise not gonna touch (and for a good laugh the other half of the time).

This is definitely one of those posts - the US right (not that the left is immune to this by any stretch, this is just about the right) is so infused with an instinct towards perpetual victmization that it becomes easy to buy into their own framing that the Right has been losing front after front in the culture war. This is the foundational premise of The Cathedral, the Moldbug-coined New Right tenet that "Cthulhu Always Swims Left" aka the left's structural advantage in controlling ~institutions~ means that in status-quo modernity culture will shift left over and over, endlessly...and therefore you need to violently overthrow the state and purge the corrupt neoliberal bureaucratic order to realize the will of the silent volke embodied in a CEO-Monarch to turn back the tide. Anyway, Hanania does a good job of pointing out that its really kinda bullshit. Tons of our culture has turned right over the past decades; gun control, education, and economics are the big topics that he mentions, and of course more exist, and its been a result combinations of public opinion shifting and the power of the state implementing agendas, aka normal politics.

Some of this is a bit of an overstatement - victories on like abortion for example haven't shifted minds, but instead exploited the US's ludicrous legal system to back-door legislative reform through the courts, its not a replicable experience in many other contexts or any other country. But the point overall stands, which gestures at the real problem - the only topic where the New Right's analysis 'holds up' is onthe sexual revolution and queer rights, revealing a movement irrationality obsessed with the sex front of the culture war. Here Hanania stumbles into his stupidity on why the right hasn't been successful fighting this, not really grappling with the fact that for example gay marriage is just really popular, this is a bottom-down fundamental sea change in how people view sex and society's role in policing it.

The mistake The Cathedral devotees make in analyzing society is that they take a single sip from a branch of the river of History and assume they have drunk it dry; Society swam left from 1950 to 1980, and the New Right cannot help but obsess endlessly over that transition as The Future. Note how common this is - so many people harken to "the 1950's" as the steady-state idyll of American society, the American economy, identify as 'traditional' everything from holiday songs to food recipes that were all invented around this time and have no older origin than that. Its all myths, and The Cathedral is an extension of that trend - by identifying US society in 1950 as a centuries-old continuity of tradition, it sees the changes of the ensuing decades as a radical discontinuity, and therefore a terrifying new normal.

It is wrong the same way nostalgia-memes are wrong; history never had a steady state, and people's ideas of even the 1950's themselves are primarily myth. Turns out historical conceptions of queer relationships have varied widly across time and space - none have been as progressive as today, but societally sanctioned spaces for queer relationships are legion. There has never been a steady state on sex and society.

But! Modernity *is* different from the past, and certain things have changed irrevocably - there is a verison of The Cathedral that is true. Technology & economic development have radically changed how we lived, from a society of farmers and their rulers to a society of urban professional workers. Cultural norms around sex & society varied all over the place; but (to radically simplify, there are a bunch of other factors) marriage for children to work the farms was near-universal, it was a structural necessity culture was built upon. This was a harsh limiter on sexual norms - said marriage for children needed to undergird it. That limiter is gone, forever, today. To not dive into it because its not the focus, with the limiter gone I don't think the 'sexual revolution', feminism, and queer rights is going to revert in a major way in the future.

Which will permit the right, as long as it stays maniacally obsessed with the idea that people don't have 1950's sexual morality anymore, to claim that they Always Lose. This is why Hanania stumbles, making the opposite mistake - seeing the failure to fight the sexual revolution as just a failed southern offensive in comparison to a successful northern attack on the front of education. The real trap is to not understand that culture is not freely malleable, only some of it is 'up for grabs' from the perspective of activists. Within the new status qup equilibrium of modernity, shifts right and left are not only possible but inevitable - but the rules of game have to be understood. Hanania may have only gotten halfway there, but props to him for opening my eyes to the contradiction.

So.... I don't have any WIPs.... yet... but yeah I wrote this for the meme and it's too long but I hope you enjoy!

Edit: I guess i should add a mild content warning or mention of trafficking and death. I tried not to be too descriptive.

Shadowlord

The ink had yet to dry on the newly completed contract when the guard outside of this secret room was heard thrashing around.

With a simple glance from an annoyed boss the bodyguard moved to see what was going on, it only took a few steps before he keeled over foaming from the mouth.

Laughter filled the room from every corner causing all in attendance to rise and draw weapons. “Wow looks like I’ll be getting a bonus today” the young girls voice moved all about like a ghost with no form. Another one of the hired goons fell over, face purple and bloated.

“Shadowlord…” one of the younger criminals muttered under his breath. Trembling in his boots and trying to stand in a more well-lit area.

“Stop that, it’s only an urban legend… find the source of that voice and kill her” the large man grabbed the contract and started to roll it up, he may have been annoyed two of his men were already dead but all that mattered was his own life. “5000 gold to whoever brings me her head.”

“Now now I’m worth much more then that” this time the mans right hand man hit the ground with a hard thud. “If you are going to ask them to throw away their lives you should at least pay them accordingly” she giggled.

The young criminal who worried about dealing with the ghost voice dropped his weapon and ran off. “Please! spare me” he could be heard yelling as he ran past his dead former comrades.

“Oh, looks like you don’t have that much loyalty, that will make this easier” the girl jumped out of the middle of floor as if she truly were a ghost. The only thing more shocking than her entrance was her appearance. Dressed in hot pink miniskirt and black top, it was like she wasn’t even trying to hide. Her piercing green eye surveyed the two remaining criminals. Her smile was almost catlike as her pink and blond hair bounced with every movement. “I am a little surprised that a trafficker was making deals with the mayor, but I guess we were due for an election” Her smile grew wider. “Any final words?” she spoke as cheerfully as if she were asking where they should go to eat.

“I’ve heard of you” the man behind the desk stood up. “You’re an assassin with the guild then” The trafficker sighed. “A pink Elf with the fashion sense of a child making quite a mockery of the guild, stealing all the high-ticket jobs. You will do anything for money well” he grabbed the coins that were original for the exchange of ‘goods’. “This should be enough to shoo you away.”

She just giggled. “A true elf would be quite offended by you trying to lump me in with them, I’m closer to a demon after all…. But you do have a point, I’ll do anything for money” she moved closer without any hesitation a slight bounce in her step. “But you know?” She glanced over at the mayor as he started clawing his neck, he tried to make a run for it but was dead after only a few steps. “When those kids I rescued ask me to take you out… I just had to do it for free” yet she made no move to attack. “So, I’ll ask again, one last time… any final words?”

The dread hit suddenly, trying to breathe was suddenly much more difficult. He looked down where he could feel a small cut on his leg near where his shadow was cast. He could see the veins on his arms bulging as his body struggled to get every bit of oxygen left. “Who… are you?”

“What a waste, you were already told who I am… I’m Arianna… the Shadowlord” her devilish smile would be the last thing he saw. She moved over to take his pulse and gave a little nod satisfied as a job well done.  “Though I will still take the money, Orphanages cost way more then I expected.” she muttered as she grabbed the sack full of gold coins and slipped into the corpse’s shadow.

There was one last loose end. “I should get that guard who ran off to show me where the kids being sold are. I’d rather that then kill him after he was so entertaining” but it was best to let him calm down, otherwise he may do something stupid like try to fight her. It would have to wait till morning.

“Boss may be mad but at least I got to test out my new poison” she giggled to herself before heading back to report the chaos she had just singlehandedly caused.

Sorry this took so long! You sent my only ask for this fun meme so I wanted to take my time and do good ones 😁 it was a good opportunity to experiment with clip studio.

Iggy got shrunk! But he seems more puzzled by the fact that Ozzy's clothes actually fit him than anything else. Ozzy is (kind of) dressed like royalty, I got sidetracked by the idea that Iggy was a world traveler and beachcomber and has a stash of found jewelry and coins qnd other souvenirs that he definitely let Ozzy get into for fun.

Spanner would love the 90s because there were many great options for baggy clothing. He'd be tickled because he could be fully covered and protected and look almost human without having to layer up and hinder his movements.

Visual Novel Meme

Getting to this very late but this is a dual answer to a couple of asks from @luck-and-larceny and @furys-mercy​ I didn’t forget either of you, just had some irl stuff going on that did a number on my creativity and productivity for a while. Hope this was worth the wait. It ended up rather long so the meme proper is under the cut.

Our story begins in the Jewel of the Sagolii, the bustling city of Ul’dah. You stand before the Ruby Road Exchange where a small crowd has gathered to watch the street performers. There are jugglers, fire eaters and the usual dancing girls though on this day one among them catches at your eye. Maybe it’s her fiery hair, maybe it’s her formidable height, towering as she does above the mostly miqo’te dancers around her, or perhaps it’s the way she moves, making no effort to seduce onlookers with her curves nor to play to the crowd for coin. She seems to be dancing for herself alone, for the sheer joy of movement. 

CORAFEL

It’s easy enough to grab Cora’s attention provided your ATTRACTIVENESS is high enough and once you have it all you need to do to keep it is to be kind to her. This route will largely consist of slice of life vignettes as you help to get the sheltered girl onto her feet properly in the big bad city and will have all the classic hallmarks of a First Love story with cute dates and lots of awkward fumbling. Gifts of jewelry, clothing and cosmetics will help to keep her interest, as will books about exciting adventures and exotic locales. Keeping her interest is far easier than keeping the woman herself, however, as several times throughout her route hired thugs will attempt to abduct her back to her father or to the man she was meant to marry before fleeing home so you’d best have the martial PROWESS to fend off a series of increasingly skilled assailants throughout the route before finally facing her reviled betrothed in a duel at the climax or else you will need the political SAVVY to outmaneuver the man and prove yourself a more advantageous partner for her family to join with. All in all this is a pretty standard romance novel sort of route. Sweet rather than spicy and with almost all of the challenge coming from external forces. 

Turning off of the Ruby Road you enter the bustling chaos of the Quicksand, it’s standing room only inside with a crowd or rowdy partiers between you and the bar but there in one dimly lit corner you spot a tiny oasis of calm, a lone elezen leaning against the wall, his attention focused on the book in his hand.

GHISLAIN

The only way to get yourself onto Ghislain’s route is to impress him with your INTELLECT. The only way to stay on it is not to try to push your burgeoning friendship into a romance until he suggests it himself. And even then, don’t expect this one to be spicy or frankly to include any sex at all as Ghislain is very ace. He is, however, open to romance and all of its assorted fluff so long as a strong emotional attachment has been formed beforehand. Paying attention to the things he does and says in unguarded moments when he lets his mask slip will be the key to developing that attachment. This would likely be the most challenging route if only because so much of what he presents in the beginning is a persona, and a persona he has nothing but contempt for, at that. Trying to win the heart of the man he’s pretending to be will only earn you that contempt in turn. Rather you should call out those early excesses and opinions as frivolous and vain while showing a strong inclination for scholarly pursuits and learning for its own sake. Gifts of books, historical artifacts and interesting natural specimens will gain you further favor. Eventually, inevitably, you’ll learn his secret and his true identity. At that point there will be a test of your political SAVVY to see if you can figure out a way to clear his name and save his family from ruin. Success in this endeavor will earn you the best ending and a lifelong place in Ghislain’s heart.

Leaving the Quicksand via the rear you find yourself in Pearl Lane, the shadier side of Ul’dah. On the corner ahead you see a highlander man baiting in drunken patrons stumbling from the bar with a shell game and across the alleyway from this game a miqo’te fellow leans against the wall watching the game with a wry smile on his face looking for all the world as though he were enjoying a bit of street theater.

ILTHUS

A pulse and the slightest hint of interest is all it takes to get yourself onto the trash cat route and it’s not a hard route to remain on either so long as you’re the forgiving sort. Expect to be dragged into some dirty dealings by this man and for him to have his own very specific definition of “helping” when it comes to any difficulties you might have that need a second pair of hands. Any gifts you choose to offer him will be happily accepted though practical things he can make some use of like weapons, dice, cards or tools of the rogue’s trade will be best received. Expect this route to be very spicy and to head right into the bedroom from as early on as you express the slightest interest in exploring that. Ilthus is even quite happy to be your piece on the side if you’re on another main route though he will make a nuisance of himself by being the polar opposite of subtle about the fact that you’re knocking boots on the regular. It’s almost impossible to fail or even to end this route once you’re on it. You have to be actively trying to shake him off and find the right words to really hurt him emotionally to get him to finally leave your character alone, however this isn’t an easy route to reach a good ending on either. Only two types of character really have a shot at it. You need to be either a street smart tough as nails type with enough WIT and martial PROWESS to survive in his world and even to beat him at his own game or a sheltered academic type whose piercing INTELLECT is matched only by their complete obliviousness to their own ATTRACTIVENESS. He’ll find either of these a challenge too alluring to pass up and may be willing to put in a little effort of his own for a change.

Passing from Pearl Lane you wander over onto the Sapphire Avenue Exchange. Various merchants stand hawking their wares. One stall in particular catches your eye owing to the eclectic mix of goods. It seems to be equal parts clothing vendor and food stand with an assortment of gaudy fabrics on display beside tempting little meat pies and skewers of roasted vegetables. Standing awkwardly alongside the stall is a dark haired Seeker male who seems to be trying to thread the needle between being imposing enough to deter any would-be thieves while being inviting enough not to deter would-be customers. He’s having a hard time finding the right balance and irritation is starting to show on the face of the lalafellin vendor who apparently owns the stall.

SHIHAN

Kindness and diligence are the most important qualities to have for this route. This poor guy desperately needs help but is far too proud to actually ask for it and almost too proud to accept it unless it’s tactfully offered. Once he accepts then successful completion of the arc will require a character with ample political/legal SAVVY to help worm him and his tribe out of a nasty contract and only once that step is done can a real romance begin. Shihan will not accept any gifts intended for him but will be deeply touched by gifts that he can give to the children of the tribe so toys, small animals that can be made into pets and age appropriate books will all be appreciated greatly. His undying friendship can be earned by helping with his tribe’s troubles but anyone wishing to woo the taciturn tia will need to have a very sharp WIT and enough martial PROWESS to prove a worthy hunting partner. He also highly values honesty and a willingness to pitch in and try to help whenever and wherever people are struggling. This one can get spicy once you’ve established yourself as his type and given him reason to trust you. A lifetime of selfless devotion can quite easily transfer to a deep and abiding desire to make sure you are completely satisfied both in the bedroom and outside of it.

Leaving Pearl Lane via the Gates of Thal you come across a spot of trouble. A small gang of rough looking men are menacing a young boy and his scraggly chocobo just outside the city gates. As you’re deciding whether or not to get involved yourself a small bag lands at the feet of the apparent leader of this gang and shortly explodes into a dizzying array of multicolored bangs and spinning pyrotechnics. The chocobo and its rider bolt past you and on into the city as several arrows begin whizzing through the smoke. The gang scatters in confusion leaving you alone as a lone miqo'te woman with an enormous feathered hat and a bow slung over one shoulder approaches through the clearing smoke.

LYNETH

Hope you’re ready for an adventure because this route will certainly give you one, or possibly a dozen. This woman never met a good cause she wouldn’t fight for even and especially when she’s outgunned and overmatched. You’ll need either a considerable amount of martial PROWESS or the devil’s own LUCK to get through her arc in one piece and a silver tongue and sharp WIT to keep up with her constant flirtatious banter. Gifts of fancy booze, smutty novels and exotic cooking ingredients will win you extra favor. This route will be a mix of sweetness and spice full of adrenaline-laced kisses and steamy nights under the stars. To reach her good ending you’ll need to prove you’re loyal, dependable and always down for a new adventure.

What could the pastel-coated aestheticization of violence on social media, the Israeli army, and anime fandoms possibly have in common? For centuries, Western art and media have used aesthetic devices to present horrific realities through a beautifying glass. With the widespread use of digital media, this practice has entered the virtual sphere, where memes—often verbally aggressive or cynical—are translated into tender and cute aesthetics, pastel colors, and lovely characters like Mimmy or Charmmy Kitty, adorned with hearts and ribbons and marked by pretty fonts. Some gifs or graphics are turned into purchasable pins and socks displaying messages such as “Please Die” framed in a pink heart or the meme “We are going to beat you to death” surrounded by plushies. Suddenly, what first appeared to be rude and corrosive now seems incredibly sweet and mild.

At first glance, I dismissed the memes as insignificant and harmless, but as I delved deeper, I discovered a whole ecosystem of microcultures and living digital fauna. Exploring this pink world, “cuteness” became my guiding light, leading me to discover hidden secrets—the dark underbelly of the “happycore aesthetic” that is far from its positive image of a wholesome, safe space: the unsettling, triggering “traumacore.”

At the same time, the 1990s saw the emergence of the girl power movement—emphasizing female empowerment, independence, and representation—which challenged the dominant cultural narrative that women should be submissive and subordinate to men. The rise of consumer culture in the 1990s enabled the marketing and selling of girl-power-themed products, which was closely linked to the rise of neoliberal capitalism. While this commercialization made girl power a profitable industry for corporations and media companies, it also depoliticized the movement, shifting the focus away from a collective social change towards individual empowerment and market-driven values, often targeting young girls to express their individuality through consumption rather than collective action or political engagement.

Indeed, my whole childhood in Milan, Italy, during the 1990s was heavily influenced by the Western hyperconsumerism of the time and led by “Pink totalitarianism.” As an only child, I found comfort in my collection of gel pens, pastel ribbons, and hair pins in matching cotton candy shades of pink—a color that has always attracted my attention with its cute and charming qualities. Objects that embody cuteness and vulnerability evoke a deep emotional attachment within me, inspiring an instinct to cherish and protect them. To me, Kawaii serves as a poignant metaphor for the universal human experience of vulnerability, expressed through the act of seeking comfort in objects that affirm our needs. As I accumulated mass-produced mechanical pencils and fancy decorative stickers, I realized that what I sought to comfort and adorn was my own vulnerability.

Returning to the digital realm, the Kawaii culture continues to spawn a plethora of fandoms, private collections, and routines that fosters a sense of belonging and self-representation within specific online communities that identify themselves under its principles and aesthetics.
