Stede’s messages in bottles are a brilliant theatrical device.

They offer a level of authenticity regarding Stede’s feelings which lean more towards a personal diary than a letter.

He might say they’re messages intended for Ed, put the chance of him finding one are pretty nonexistent. They’re therapy sessions for Stede, really. Some offer a bending of the narrative regarding his current circumstance as if he’s trying to impress the Ed in his head; but other parts show Stede working through emotions, exploring the depth of his feelings for Ed, his guilt at what happened, and allow Stede to pine in Ed’s absence.

They’re also part of How Stede Views The World. Like the two wish fulfilment maps which practically have no purpose, other than being whimsical props reinforcing a positive mindset…But just like the maps, in their own esoteric way, the messages in bottles do work because against all odds, Ed finds one!

The message found by Ed is raw and honest. Stede’s soul couldn’t be laid more bare. And it demonstrates how Stede was thinking about them as a couple the entire time they were apart. It’s a little window into the past which shows Stede got it during those few months. Stede is able to put into words what Ed has always known implicitly. That they are meant for each other, fated to be together. Intertwined. And that’s the missing piece that allows Ed to finally lay down his fears and declare his love on the battlefield so openly.

The found message helps Ed to see inside Stede’s heart. To see beyond the layers of hurt and ego and miscommunication which they are both sometimes party to, and just get to the core truth.

Stede loves Ed. Truly, madly. He loves him.

I made a bad joke in the kitchen about how I was dodging bullets in this place like The Matrix. I did the backward lean all swooshy and laughed, like it was really funny. The subtext was lost on Rich and Mel, pretty sure.

Later, in the bathroom, I thought: need to say something...if I don't say something, I'll spon-tan-e-ously combuuusssst.

But then, I also really want dental. And to keep my name out of it. And to never ever see again, even in the merest sides of my vision, Hanna from HR, walking smarmily down the hallway.

Not googling things like, "shaking hands healthy 26 year old what mean?" would also be nice.

So I dress rehearse the real bullet dodge instead.

General relationship headcanons

a/n: I'm sorta rusty sorry :')

As focused as he can be on anything but romance in the beginning I like to think he does pick up on any signals you send his way. Whether or not you can pick up on any of his signals may vary.

If you happen to be particularly oblivious he doesn’t shy away from grander gestures such as bringing you gifts or snacks that you’ve mentioned are your absolute favorites. Must he rip the bandage off and confess he does so by taking you on a more scenic route back to base.

After that you hardly see him leave your side unless a mission truly calls for it. Not that he didn’t already keep a close eye on you on the battlefield before, of course.

Outside of missions his favorite way to relax is just on a couch having his head in your lap while you play with his hair or even just leaning on you while you’re busy reading or on your phone as your presence can sometimes help him focus on mitigating the pain in his hands.

He quite enjoys any sort of activity you drag him into and often uses everything as inspiration for future date ideas.

That being said, he loves taking you out to places he thinks you’d like. Although if you’re more of a homebody he passes you no judgement and will only occasionally drag you out when he succeeds in convincing you. Of course his face card grants him a lot of leeway.

He makes it a bit of a habit to show you off when he can considering he can be quite cocky at times. Regardless of whatever dynamic you two conjure up you lift his doubts with ease. They’re still there of course, but one look at your face and a soft touch can do quite a lot for him.

I don’t believe very many things spark an argument between you aside from perhaps the stereotypical “You shouldn’t be so reckless!” on missions that happen to go a little more awry.

Fortunately he can be rather interpersonal and comes to an understanding very easily. If you’re the one being stubborn, however, he gives you some time to yourself to cool down before he returns to you with an apologetic smile and a heart to heart. He doesn’t make too many promises, but leans more towards realigning your focus and reminding you what these missions are for. Whatever the problem may be he tries to the best of his abilities to comfort you.

That may pertain to a much needed session in the bedroom whether the resolve ends up being wholesome or not…
