Hold up. When did he decide he’s going to learn—or, re-learn—chess? Leo. Does not know. Really, his brain gets ahead of him sometimes. But he doesn’t even bother tracking the thought process back, because it just… feels right. It makes sense. It makes him excited, actually. To have something to sink his teeth into. Something to focus that fizzy, spinning thing in his brain towards, something he can funnel all this excess energy into. He can get into it, learn all the terms and the fancy moves, get the full scope of it under his grasp until he can win again and again and again. And it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be fun. Trends of Ableism in Kids Media

So I’ve been watching a lot of Quinton Review’s NSU videos recently and there’s some really thought-provoking commentary there. It becomes obvious how a lot of material in these shows are incredibly inappropriate for kids and heavily sexualize the child stars. But as of late, I’ve noticed a common trope that pops up in these tween shows. The trope where they take a heavily autistic/ADHD/ADD (just neurodivergent in general) coded character and make them incredibly weird and annoying. And then they perpetuate the idea that kids like these are “abnormal” by having the main protagonists treat them poorly, act like they’re freaks, and are generally shown to despise the child.

Of course, we see this type of child character in iCarly, where Quinton first points out how over-the-top the little fangirl is portrayed. And with “weird” characters like this in kids shows, you would think that the characters have to learn to treat that character with kindness. And maybe it would be like that in a show for literal babies, but definitely not in this edgy tween sitcom. It’s notable here because that doesn’t happen at all. The kid is just portrayed as annoying and awful throughout, and all the protagonists really hate her. He points out that there’s another character like this later on in his Sam & Cat video. 

That definitely got me thinking about the types of characters that were portrayed as “weird” and unlikable in shows I watched growing up. And I don’t mean kid characters who are just bad people or bullies, because those antagonist characters are a bit different. I mean the trope that’s used to portray characters as being inherently and fundamentally “wrong and different” compared to the rest of the cast. And that these types of characters should be made fun of, punished, and treated poorly compared to our main characters. And these main characters are supposed to represent the “normal and well-adjusted” kids, who DO deserve respect.

Here are some other examples. Definitely the overall meanspirited nature of the way characters are treated for their appearance and behavior in the Harry Potter series (which has been talked about quite a bit). Another Nickelodeon example is Michelangelo in the TMNT 2012 series. In my opinion, he has a lot of traits that could be considered neurodivergent and is often yelled at, or punished for having these traits. Characters kinda get called out for treating him a certain way sometimes, but it happens maybe once or twice. Now, I’m a big fan of this show, but I definitely noticed this when I was a kid and when I re-watched it as an adult. There are probably several more examples, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

I’m very against censorship in children’s shows, especially as a queer woman. I think that adult topics should be portrayed, I think more should teach about teen pregnancy/general sex ed, and of course, there should be way more queer rep (in anything not just kids shows). However, I do think there’s a huge difference between purposefully teaching children that it’s cool and funny to treat someone poorly just because they are fundamentally different (aka neurodivergent coded). And by doing so, rewarding these children for bad behavior. A lot of children, particularly middle school age, are already bullies or mean, and this does not help. It’s incredibly shitty how these cruel and mean-spirited NSU sitcoms in particular get greenlit and approved, while a ton of innocent stuff (aka queer rep in particular) gets censored for being “inappropriate.”

So, me and @wondrous-art kind of went insane and just started talking about this TMNT AU where Splinter raised them in the forest outside of New York City instead of in the sewers of the city, and now it's become its own monster. So here are the turtle designs and April and Master Splinter. Infodump about the turtles in this AU below the read more.

Leonardo

Leo's an eastern diamondback terrapin and he's the oldest at 15 and the one "in charge" because he's the oldest. He fights with a bokken and is working on using two of them because Splinter didn't have access to a whole ass blacksmith, so the boys get wooden weapons. Leo's got some issues with OCD, mostly he's got hurt-obsession and has intrusive thoughts about accidentally hurting his family, and his rituals are based around keeping that from happening. He likes his long mask tails and thinks they make him look like a hero. I tried to combine a bit of 2003, 2012 and Rise Leo so he tries to be responsible but he's still a teenager and goofs around and makes jokes. He wants to be a dang hero!! Anime is cool! He's especially interested in learning about Japan because it's Splinter's culture, and Splinter raised them with aspects of Japanese culture. His main interest is still training to become better at ninjutsu, but he's also got Heavy Interest in anime. He's the family medic.

Raphael

Raph's a wood turtle and the second oldest at 15 (just a month behind Leo). He argues with Leo a lot because Leo wants to do the right thing and Raph thinks they shouldn't get involved with stuff that isn't their business. Again, I tried to get a mix of the Raphs, so he's got anger issues but the one thing that overrides that is the protectiveness over his family. He does a lot of weight training, climbing, and hiking for fun. He's also the family cook! Splinter taught him. He likes to pretend he'd rather be alone but really, he sticks to his family unless he's trying to blow off steam. Because wood turtles estivate, he's sensitive to the heat and has passed out during training in the summer before. He was not happy about that. Raph fights with a wooden jutte and calls Splinter "Oyaji" because he's a rude little shit. He'll also call Leo "aniki" when he's trying to make a point.

Donatello

Donnie's an eastern spiny softshell turtle and 14 years old. He can breathe underwater! But this also means his above-water lungs aren't as strong and he's got asthma. He's autistic and uses his bo staff as a stim half the time and chewing on the ends of his mask the other half of the time. His interests are mainly engineering, insects, and biology, but he's always interested in whatever modern technology Splinter lets him get a hold of. He refuses to wear knee and elbow pads because they squeeze his joints and he doesn't like the sensation of them. He's got a sarcastic side and when he's serious he can get snippy. He would have been the family medic but he saw blood exactly One Time and hit the floor. He's fine when it comes to any blood other than his family's, but god forbid one of his brothers bleed or he's out like a light. He's got little webs between his fingers and toes that help him, he's the best swimmer in the whole fam.

Michelangelo

The babiest baby, a spotted turtle at the age of 13. He's sensitive to temperature and is constantly complaining that it's too hot or too cold, there is no good temperature. He's got ADHD bad and keeps at least two fidget toys in his belt at all times. He's an artist and likes to paint and draw, mostly abstract paintings but he likes to draw things he's seen around the woods or cool machine designs that he asks Donnie to try and make. He's got the URGE to dig during the summers to try and stay cool. He's the most emotionally intelligent and opens up easily about how he's feeling and can usually figure out how his brothers are feeling as well. If he cries it is Everyone's Problem. He doesn't like being treated openly like a child, but he still does things like climb into his brother's beds after nightmares, climb all over them, ask for bites of their food, and generally he just wants to be given Attention and Love at all times. He calls Splinter "Otochan" unless his brothers are calling him, then he switches to "Tosan" like them. He'll occasionally call his brothers "onii-san" but it's when he's trying to be cute and get something. He has nunchucks that he likes to spin when his hands aren't busy.

“Vaccines cause autism” “Vaccines cause ADHD” ok, sure. But why would you rather have a dead or sick child than a neurodivergent one? Why, when people talk about "Vaccine damage" are the parents of the autistic or neurodivergent child referred to as "Victims of vaccine damage" instead of the child themself? Why are autistic and neurodivergent people so hated in society that you would rather a neurotypical child die than risk them becoming neurodivergent? Why are they so hated that when an anti-vax child is autistic, the parent of that child is seen as a victim simply for having to raise, take care of, and love them? "Vaccines cause ___" is just a roundabout way of saying that you resent your child for not being normal. And if you dont have an autistic child and you still use "Vaccines cause autism" as an excuse, then you are even worse in some ways, because you resent autistic people for even existing in the first place. And that, is an ugly, ugly thing. You dont truly love your child because you show that your love is conditional on the fact that they are neurotypical. Because you hate a marginalized community more than you love them. Alovera heals burns, lavender honey can help a sore throat, some pants repel mosquitos, and essential oils can help you feel calm, but none of these things keep your child from getting sick. Being autistic or neurodivergent isn't some horrible curse placed on people, or a burden to everyone, stop acting like it is. Story Title- Please Save Me

Note- That’s not my Art! I found it on Pinterest and thought it fit the story I’m writing if you know the artist please tell me so I give them credit!!

Warning-

This story is very angsty, and follows all the characters. (We mainly go between our four turtles but we do have a couple of chapters where we follow April, Casey, Hueso, Draxum and Usagi!)

Story Description-

It was hard trying to move on it felt like a part of them was with their brother in the prison dimension. Six months living their lives without Leo's stupid one-liners without his smiles, without his bragging. It was six months of hell for everyone mourning him in their own ways.

Donnie stuck to his lab overworking himself to forget that his brother wouldn't come bursting into his lab with some terrible one-liner.

Raph bounced between the training room, his room and Leo's room wishing Leo would just appear in front of him with his signature smirk telling him he fell for some terrible prank Leo had been playing on him.

Mikey bounced between the sewers and Draxum's apartment training to better his mystic powers, holding onto the hope that he'll be able to save Leo soon.

Splinter spent his time staring at pictures of his sons asking Mikey and Raph to tell him more about the things he should have known as their father.

And Leo... Leo just hoped his family was doing okay as he danced dangerously on the line between unconsciousness, consciousness, and death.

This is also apart of a series but I started on the last story first. (Pretty unorthodox and might be frustrating to some but that’s how my funky funny brain works!) As far as the prompts go: I can't decide between 64 and 78, being said to Bayverse Mikey, who has been having PTSD nightmares after a nearly fatal injury. The other person could be one of his brothers if not the reader who is his best friend and they are both in love without realizing. Since Mike is already my sweet ADHD autistic baby boy, I Headcanon him as actually introverted with an extrovert persona that he doesn't know how to unmask.

Rated Angst

The cot felt cozy on this cold winters night. It had been your bed for the past month and a half. The inside of your apartment was a memory by now, you wish you could say the makeshift vacation was brought on by your own leisure, unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

The sounds of water and the city above have turned into a soundtrack, when exhaustion won over or it wasn’t your turn to stay up...

Stay up with Michelangelo.

You sat up and looked around the living area, the usual chatter of the guys wasn’t present. Patrol had been short tonight per Leo’s orders, Donnie had been up until about an hour ago monitoring via the hub. Exhaustion had claimed them all including Splinter, but for all of your attempts to get a decent nights sleep, it didn’t feel fair.

Closing your eyes you could picture that night and the horrifying hours that culminated in your hands covered in blood. Mikey had been hurt, not an injury he could walk off in a few hours, but an all too real life threatening injury that had stained you physically as well as emotionally. You never expected to see much crimson in such a short amount of blood, to speak to Mikey in order to keep him conscious while Donnie did everything his power to keep his little brother alive.

Because it was looking like Mikey might not make it through the night.

That thought alone made your eyes water again, even a month into his recovery your heart shattered wondering what might be if he hadn’t made it. You saw Raph exit their room, half his gear on and as quietly as his skill had allowed him he snuck out. It had been like that for a while now, whenever it got too much or the guilt overtook him Raphael would simply sneak and go topside. Whatever he did was enough to keep him at bay for now, surprisingly so even Leo had backed off.

You almost asked him if you could come with, have a breather from it all but your lips remained pressed even as he was out of your line of view.

What a mess.

Ready to force yourself to sleep your head barely hit the pillow when you heard a brief shout. You stumbled out of the cot and kept still, the sound was there again and the direction it came from was clearly from where Mikey was. You patted through the living room, pushed the curtain open and saw him. Eyes shut tight and trembling, whimpering for something or someone. You sat at his bed and rubbed his face trying to gently rouse him without making the situation worse. Mikey had been sleeping poorly, he’d been racked with anxiety attacks and nightmares.

Gently you rubbed his face, the new scar from his incident. It was similar to Leo’s eye scar but much angrier, the sutures had been taken out not too long ago. The cast on his arm was still on, the scattered drawings you and him had applied once he was more lucid had been one of the most calmest nights.

Such a mess.

“Mikey, Mikey it’s ok, shh” You soothed softly as his eyes shot open and he looked about the room.

“Y/N? What-“ He rubbed at his eye, the none scarred one.

“I could hear you screaming. Are you okay?” You gently placed him back on the bed on his side, hand reaching for his and holding it tightly. Mikey blinked several times, that shine to his baby blues so dull. There was ache and fear behind them now, a raging storm that he seemed to drown in night after night. You caressed his cheek with your free hand, fingers making out a healed scar.

“Bad dream, felt too real” His voice was a little hoarse, the tightness in which he held your hand a testament to how this dream had left him. “Why doesn’t it stop? I-I just wanna sleep...just wanna be okay” His voice felt so small, the way his eyes teared up only gutted you further. You opted to lay down with him, much like you had for this past month. The two of you on yours sides, hand clasping his you kissed his knuckles.

“Tell me about you dream, it helps if you do so” Your words were hushed, Mikey’s eyes bounced around your face, he wanted to speak but so much of his own brain prevented him from doing so. He kept so much of his thoughts to himself, only ever letting his walls down when he was comfortable enough but this whole incident had set something back between the two of you.

There was something he wanted to say to you and prior to this incident if looked like it might happen sure enough. Now though, even as you held your own thoughts back for more pressing matters at hand. Mikey chewed on the inside of his cheek, a habit he had when overwhelmed with too much around him and in his mind.

“You can tell me tomorrow, doesn’t have to be now” You reassured as to not add more pressure. You felt his fingers losen from your grip and move to your chin. An innocent but intimate caress, your cheeks flushed ever so slightly. “When it happened... I don’t remember much, don’t remember the drive back but I started to come through when I heard your voice” His eyes fluttered close when you tentatively caressed his bottom lip.

Mikey swallowed, eyes back to yours. “You told me to stay awake, I wanted to do that even if I felt I couldn’t” You pressed a palm to the hard plates of his chest, it seemed to steady him, ground him. “I wanted you awake Mikey, wanted to see your eyes you know” Here you were doing just that and your heart twisted up with so much emotion.

You were so in love it left you weightless at times.

But now wasn’t the moment, another night maybe? For now Mikey needed to recover, even if it wouldn’t mean fully so. Physically he’d be there soon, but mentally he was a long ways.

“Could you stay with me here?” He sounded almost like a little boy, eyes shiny with tears and voice so small. You nodded, boldly pressing your forehead to his. “You can sleep now. I’ll fight the bad dreams off if they come to get you.” You smiled timidly, another knot in your heart twisting when he smiled softly at your words.

You watched him drift off, so close to him you could count ever beat of his heart as it settled.

Feeling tears escape you tried blinking them away as exhaustion took over.

‘I love you’ you mouthed before you fell a sleep.

I'm reading Vasari's artist biographies and it makes me hate Leonardo da Vinci. "Ooh I'm such a genius but won't actually finish most of my work or make working prototypes of any of my inventions" -- like, nah bruh, not cutting it. "I don't finish my work because it's better in my head and finishing it would-" shut up literally everyone has that, of course the idea in your head is always better than the execution, but a real artist still fucking finishes their damn work! It doesn't matter how fantastic your brain is if you're not going to actually make a real artwork that exists here on the physical realm.

Done > perfect, always, hands down, no contest.

Like philosophically I am so opposed to this "artist as exceptional individual who can do whatever they want" -attitude that still works in the fine art world, and it's so clearly at play with Vasari's text too.

Like I have to admit it, he sounds ADHD as hell, so I am sympathetic that he couldn't finish his shit. (Though I have less sympathy for the whole "these monks have hired another artist to make them a painting but I'm going to vaguely express interest in that gig, have the other artist retreat from the job 'cos they don't want to compete with my ~gEniUs~ and have the monks put me and my family up for five years during which I diddle around and make a very nice sketch but in reality produce nothing, then bow out of the gig, let the original artist get back to actually do the job except he dies before he manages to finish" -gig, like that's not ADHD that's being a dick >_> )

But in other news, Fra Angelico is still my fave, and I am now much more interested in Paulo Uccello and Piero di Cosimo (who was super autistic btw). I am now slogging through Raphael's biography, and dreading the inevitable shitshow that is Michelangelo's biography (Vasari was friends with him so I have a hunch it's going to be even worse than it would have been just from the art...)

The computer whirred as the fans kept the board from overheating. He switched his crossed legs, so the other leg was on top of his right. There was a slight pressure mark just above his knee.

Donnie turned to face him again. "You check a lot of these boxes, actually, Mikey."

"Yeah," He breathed, fiddling with the mug. He tapped against it. The porcelain was cold. There was a crack centimeters from his mouth, to the left. "But not all of them. There's more to it, D."

"Yeah." He stifled a yawn. "There is."
