Postcards from Snagglepuss
So this is the 500th post already!
Heavens to Murgatroyd ... to Betsy, even! This feature in this particular Tumblog has reached the 500-post milestone, and yours truly could not have been prouder to know that my Postcards of these my exploits around the place have gone this far, going back to the autumn of 2014 even!
And for all the experiences I've had in these journeys ... and for all the interesting places encountered, including some timed to become Character Convocations in their own right ... and the many fellow Funtastic types yours truly hath come across, stumbled upon even, to have this be the 500th posting can get to be triumphant!!
Sooooo ... at any rate, I would just like using this milestone to say "thanks" to all of you Hanna-Barbera-loving fan types out there for making these Postcards rather interesting. Especially when, to take some interesting examples, I helped reunite Honey and Sis, at Lake of the Ozarks even, side trip on Classic Route 66 ... gave Ralph Edwards some homage at Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, in the first of many Character Convocations, as in reunions, Meet-Ups if you will ... and I assume you recall the Avalon Harbour Underwater Cleanup where Peter Potamus and Lippy the Lion found an old bedframe, of iron even, submerged in the sands of Avalon Bay. or even our marking Mardi Gras where it all started in North America--as in Mobile, Alabama?!
(Oh yes, and the Minnesota State Fair, don't you forget the Minnesota State Fair there ...)
And even though my new partner in these travels, Huckleberry Hound by name, may be adding some spice to things, and I'm with Peter Potamus and his Magic Divers on a diving escapade in the United States Virgin Islands at this time, yours truly can't help but picture what could be coming next, especially after swapping my Mini Cooper for a motorhome after Ocean City Springfest, Maryland even, to become the new bivouac--sometimes certain to include a few of your favourite characters as well.
At any rate ... thank you, THANK YOU, from the bottom of this mountain lion's heart. And in a way of sorts, all of us in the pantheon otherwise known as The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera ...

Sneaky Dragon Listening Party - Ep. 69
Hello, partygoers!
This week Mary and David are still in beautiful Brazil as David goes coconuts for Tropicália!
Yes, it’s the end of our mixtapes portion of the Listening Party as David and Mary continue to celebrate the wild and provocative music of Brazilian political protest music of the late Sixties/early Seventies.
So pull up a palm frond, grab a hunk of sugar cane and join us in the rumpus room where we’re listening to:
Caetano Veloso – “Tropicália” – Caetano Veloso, 1968 – 15:42
Gilberto Gil – “O Canto da Ema” – Espresso 2222, 1973 – 47:41

Department of Corections: German doesn’t use accents, Dave? Um, yes, it does. Where would heavy metal be without the umlaut, you dumbkopf!
If you would like an uninterrupted version of this mixtape, please go here and [whispers] download it.
Please check out our fellow party goer Ed Draganski’s funtastic designs for show mascot Peanut Duck and, while you’re there, buy a shirt!
Hélio Oiticica’s piece “Tropicália” on display.
Department of Looking Party: Here is Gal Costa’s appearance at Festival da Record in 1968:
youtube
Here is a fun appearance by Gal Costa on a Jorge Ben TV special, coming up out of the audience to sing Ben’s song “Que Pena” with him:
youtube
(Sometimes these things are fake, obviously, but Gal Costa actually looks surprised to be called up on stage by Ben, and seems a little hesitant at the beginning. It could all be acting to sell the bit, but I like to think otherwise.)
Here is a complete TV show from 1969 called Jovem Urgente featuring appearances by Os Mutantes and Tom Zé:
youtube
So you can skip the reams of Portuguese, here are some time codes: Os Mutantes – “Panis et Circenses” – 1:04 Os Novos Baianos – “Dona Anita e Dona Helena” – 5:42 (They’re not so great.) Os Mutantes – “Fuga No.2” – 9:15 Moraes Moreira – “Sou Mais Você” – 13:35 (Tom Zé taught him guitar) Tom Zé – “A Gravata” – 16:08 Os Novos Baianos -“Curto de Véu e Grínalda” – 21:35 Tom Zé – “No Tempo da Nossa Vavá” – 24:05 Os Mutantes – “Quem Tem Medo de Brincar de Amer” – 27:04 Os Mutantes – “Preciso Encontrar um Amigo” – 33:56 Os Mutantes – “Banha da Lua” – 39:19
Here is the Tom Zé mini-doc that was mentioned during the show:

After a long hesitation, we have decided to talk about the winner of the Sanremo festival 2019, who will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 and is clearly a favorite this year. Some people and media think he's gay because of a past interview in a gay magazine about gay rights in Egypt last year and a concert at Bologna Pride in 2013. But he never came out, saying that coming out is a step back because his generation doesn’t make differences about color or sexual orientation.

I gave birth to a twin which were a mix of mike wazosky and purple minion.i got scared people will kill them.then i found myself sailing a wooden boat in an endless dark ocean with the twins , my husband and other two white long bearded men.we were all dressed in white baggy gowns.and I announced holding them up "now noone is gonna snatch you from me or hurt you". The very next moment pirates of carrebian theme track started playing in background and an enormous ghost ship emerged from the ocean behind us followed by hundreds of mini boats with gigantic minions in each cheerfully singing along to the tracks .
Even tho they seemed to come recue the twins from me and i am questioning my future motherhood...
It was one FREAKING FUNTASTIC ship entry.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Barely one week before Thanksgiving, and--
If ever there had to be one thing we needed to be thankful for (at least on the side of yours truly), while we're approaching that particular time of the year to so address, it would probably have to be ...
The approach taken of having Huckleberry Hound join me on these voyages as much as he's fond of joining me in developing some of these Character Convocations. Not to mention being able to swap the Mini Cooper as has long been the mobile bivouac for these many episodes for a motorhome, thus allowing to have a few more of your fellow Funtastics along for occasional road trip forays, starting as it did with the Ocean City (Maryland) Springfest and continuing to right here at Crazy Claws' retreat on Lake Delton near Wisconsin Dells.
While things will certainly take awhile to get seriously developed, especially following our return from a planned winter diving holiday in the Caribbean with Peter Potamus and His Magic Divers--speaking of which, I wonder how that's progressing? Peter Potamus, in fact, called me the other night and mentioned that he might be able to pick us up, depending on weather, sometime around Thanksgiving proper, allowing us to celebrate with such company to hand.
"Including, I will have you know," as I explained it to him, "the Hair Bear Bunch."
"Celebrating Thanksgiving?" Peter asked.
"Correct."
"And with the company I have ... it'll be interesting to see how my other divers would be interested in the proposition of having three rather crazy bears joining our diving escapades in the Caribbean."
"I assume you still recall when you had them at an especially secretive atoll in the Polynesian for a few days' diving vacation."
"Thank you for reminding me, Snagglepuss ..."
"But," added I, "at least the Hair Bears aren't bound to worry much about the prospect of hibernation and the ennui bound to ensue over the winter otherwise."
"Point most interesting ..."
(At any rate, Peter pledged he'd get back to me on the opinion part of the Hair Bear Bunch coming along. Stay tuned to see how it comes out.)
But just be thankful that these escapades are certain to get a little more on the interesting side of things by the time 2024 maketh its presence known. Credit the motorhome for that likelihood.

Hi! I was wondering if I could get a Character x Reader? I'm about 5' 8". I have blue hair. I like to read and write. I also dance a lot (my fav is tap but I also enjoy Pointe.) I wear glasses and have a bit of a lisp where I slur words together unintentionally. And I'd like to be a Marine Biologist, specifically tagging and tracking sharks. Thank you and have a funtastic day!
Hi my lovely anon! Just want to check if you're asking for a ship or a character x reader imagine/mini-fic? If it's the latter, please shoot me another ask with the character you'd like. Otherwise just shoot me the same ask again!

Formerly a major United States Navy facility, known as U.S.
Naval Base Subic Bay, the Subic Bay of today is an industrial and commercial area known as Subic Bay Freeport Zone, under the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Located on the west coast of the island of Luzon, 100 kilometers (62.1 miles) from famous Manila Bay, Subic Bay is known for its deep and protected waters, as well as its collection of shipwrecks, which date back to the Spanish American War, in 1898.
Subic, as it is commonly called, is more synonymous with weekend trips, especially among families. When you’re in Subic, here is a list of things you should do.
1. Bring the whole family to Zoobic Safari
Zoobic Safari is a 20-hectare (49.4-acre) expanse of exotic animals, adventurous terrains, streams, and grasslands. The park has many different attractions, thus, plan to spend at least half a day to fully enjoy it. Part of Zoobic Park consists of a two-hectare (4.9-acre) forest, where guests can experience mini-trekking to see the animals – semi-domesticated, wild, and exotic – in their natural habitat.
Guests can also get a chance to pet the likes of Bearcats and camels, perfect for little children. The Savannah, meanwhile, is a sanctuary for wild animals such as ostriches and wild boars. Serpentarium is an old ammunition bunker, that features a variety of reptile species, such as snakes and lizards. The highlight of Zoobic Safari is feeding the tigers, from inside a protected vehicle.
2. Get closer to ocean animals at Ocean Adventure
Ocean Adventure is a natural-setting marine park that offers tourists an extensive list of aqua-related activities, such as swimming with sea animals, up-close encounters with sea lions, dolphins, jacks, turtles, and even sharks! Ocean Adventure also features shows and a collection of marine life at the Ocean Discovery Aquarium and Seatrek. The main attractions are the animal shows and swimming with the dolphins.
3. Have fun indoors at Funtastic Park
Funtastic Park is a ‘fun-tastic’ place for kids and adults alike. With the tagline 'where feel-good moments are made’, Funtastic Park is an educational Fun Park that offers unique and fun activities, such as a Mirror Maze, 3D Enchanted Forest, Science Zone, Optical Illusion Wall, Kids Learning Nook and more!
The park also offers a comfortable picnic area, as well as a souvenir shop and cafeteria. Attractions are interactive and educational. Most of all, Funtastic Park is a great venue to burn some of your kids’ limitless energy!
4. Enjoy and survive the Pamulaklakin Forest Trail
When you want to experience nature firsthand, the Pamulaklakin Forest Trail is a must visit! Pamulaklakin, from the native Amabala language meaning vine, is located in the heart of Subic and offers exciting tourist activities. It includes sightseeing, a mini jungle tour, ecology tour, and overnight jungle tour.
Aside from the tours, the venue also offers a picnic area and picnic table, best for group activities, photo ops and even team building. Tourists are fully immersed into a culture-rich wonderland here, where they can see how the natives of Subic live and survive in the forest.
5. Magaul Bird Park for bird shows and interactive activities
The Magaul Bird Park showcases Subic’s bird life, with its number of bird shows – including Winged Wonders, Survival Demo, Talk and Feeding Times, with interesting bird species, such as the hornbill, parrot, and raptor. The bird park also features life-sized Angry Birds, the Goliath Swing over a cliff, the Aerial Adventure Walk, Kiddie Rappelling, Tree Camping, the Peregrine Plunge and more!
6. Learn how to make fire at JEST Camp
Survival training is not just for men in uniform, it can come in handy, as well. Learn some new skills, while having fun at JEST Camp. JEST, short for Jungle Environment Survival Training, is the most famous as well as the toughest survival school in the Philippines. JEST Camp has topnotch instructors, offers survival certification programs and includes courses such as Camp Craft, survival training and a Boton Falls visit.
There is also the option to participate in Wild Child, a survival program for children, campfires, a Hunter-Gatherer course, Tribe Team Building and extreme Survival Bootcamp. JEST Camp is popular as a team building activity and for groups.
7. Retreat to the cove of All Hands Beach Resort
When tired of adventure, it is time to take a break and relax on the shores of Subic, which feature crystal clear water. All Hands Beach is a comfortable sanctuary and is best for swimming, as it has a gradually sloping shoreline. Dine along the beachfront, enjoy cold tropical drinks with mountain views or have fun with all the activities offered by the resort, like jet skiing
  8. White Rock Beach Hotel + Waterpark is the place to splurge
With an area totaling eight hectares (19.8 acres), White Rock Beach Hotel + Waterpark is a one-stop destination for all recreational activities. Lounge by its private beach or enjoy recreational and aqua-related activities. The beach, likewise, has a waterpark and wave pools, and an offering of watersports.
If the heat is too much for you, temporarily retreat inside the resort and enjoy facilities like the spa and bowling alley. When it comes to accommodation, this property has a total of 262 guest rooms, ranging from standard rooms to suites and beach villas
9. Nightlife in Subic, over cocktails and music
Aside from the tranquil beaches, a sanctuary of exotic animals, marine and nature activities, Subic is also known for its energetic nightlife and this resonates with the following bars in the area, like Pier One Bar and Grill, Hydra Resto Bar, and Midnight Rambler Bar Subic.
    10. End your Subic trip with duty-free shopping
Of course, who would forget about shopping? Duty-free shopping is a top activity in Subic, especially among frequent visitors. There are three major duty-free shopping areas in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and these include Puregold, Royal and Freeport. These shops, along with imported items, also carry locally-made merchandise.

Canning jars come in a wide variety of sizes, and two common lid sizes. It’s not a bad idea to go ahead and snag at least some of that variety, because it can give us a lot of versatility. Factoring in our uses, the composition of people we’re feeding, likely situations, and costs can help decide what spread of sizes is most efficient and effective.
Lid sizes can sometimes make or break canning costs.
In some locations, the difference in price between regular and wide mouth lids isn’t significant, as little as $0.03-$0.05 USD per lid. Other times, though, inside the U.S. and around the world, wide mouth lids are as much as 2-3x a regular mouth lid.
Those lid costs can add up fast if we’re doing a lot of canning every year.
Bear in mind the total real costs of canning, including those lids, while contemplating jar investments.
The costs can influence some to dehydrate more foods – not only creating a more compact storage, but also one where it doesn’t matter if something won’t all be consumed quickly. It allows them to use larger jars and fewer lids.
Account for water availability if that’s the plan.
Other homesteaders skip half- and quarter-pint jars – and the extra lids required to can the same amounts of food using those smaller jars – sticking instead mostly to quarts and pints.
That’s fine now, when we have fridges and freezers that make leftovers easy and convenient. In a disaster, however, widespread or personal, our power sources or our appliances can go down. We need to consider if we have persistent snow cover and deep-cold periods, or double-backup power sources, and how many leftovers we’d be looking at dealing with without them.
Balancing the cost (and canning time) of preserving foods in reasonable, readily consumable portion sizes versus bigger jars takes a bit of experience, because “consumable” is situationally dependent. It’s not one size fits all.
Go Big or Go Home
(Personally, I like my home. Just saying.)
It can be tempting to snag half-gallon and gallon jars sometimes, especially if we’re storing dry goods in our jars until we want them for “real” canning.
Resist that temptation. If you can’t resist, go only up to half-gallon jars, and don’t sink the bank into getting a lot of them.
The max size most of us need is quarts.
Exceptions would be if we’re getting bigger jars for free and it’s just another storage container, or if we’re already fermenting and producing significant juice/booze/vinegar.
Many home canners just don’t safely preserve foods in larger jars, especially denser foods. Some won’t even hold more than a quart’s height.
We also usually don’t need bigger jars, even if we’re feeding 12-20 people or more.
Too, they’re fairly expensive. It’s a long-term investment (usually) but “saving” the cost of buying 2-6 lids for pints and quarts to hold the same amount will take several years to pay off.
Another consideration: The more sizes of jars we have to account for, the more “funtastic” our storage area planning will be.
Shelving may not seem like a major factor, but remember: just canning two cups a day per person requires 180+ quarts.
Winging it may be an option for 30 cases of pints so we can eat or share only those two cups a day. Aiming to can two-each of fruits, veggies, and proteins per day – still no carbs, syrups/honey, etc. – bumps that to nearly 550 quarts.
That’s 46 flats of quarts or 92 flats of pints we’re accounting for on our shelves, per person.
And THAT makes the spacing involved with storing those jars something worth actual thought.
Pints, both “slims”, and quarts work well on the same shelving. If there’s room to wiggle quart jars past each other, there’s also usually room to stack half-pints or half- and quarter-pints, in flats or as “loose” jars.
Once shelving is accounting for half-gallons and gallons, too, your choices are to break away from modular shelving, be stacking a lot more combinations, or waste 4+ inches on every shelf that won’t quite fit another layer.
Shorty Jars
Preserving small portions in quarter-pints and mini/sample jars lets us open useable amounts of foods. That can both limit leftovers/scraps and let us dole out specialty items instead of having to consume them all at once. It increases total space used, though, and takes 2-8x the lids versus pints and quarts.
Even so, we might want at least some small jars for spreads, herbs, reduced stock bases, juice concentrates, sauces, and high-value “treats” like low-yielding berries or meats.
Depending on family composition and tastes, they’re also handy for consumable portions of spicing onions, pickled beets, or even regular ol’ salsa and chutney.
Picking Sizes by Situation
Remember: How we can (and cook) now may very well change if we’re removed from or limiting our power draws and refrigeration. Some of us have 3-6 months or more when we could pack old-school ice chests and buckets, sink a bucket/cooler in a cold spring, or let an outdoor cooler be our fridge. For some of us, though, that’s impossible or unreliable.
Without refrigeration…
People anticipating infants/toddlers might stock more quarter-pints (4-5 oz.; 100-125-150 ml) and mini/sampler jars (1.5-3 oz.; 50-75 ml) so they can easily preserve baby food.
(Plan on ordering the teensy-tiny jars, and almost 100% the extra lids for them – they’re rarely in stores. Also, be sitting and try to avoid drinking/lollipops when you do the price check. It’s “eek” worthy.)
Singles and couples will probably lean more heavily on half-pints and pints, especially for meats and proteins, and use quarts mostly for canning heat-and-eat soups or stews, bulky items like potatoes, and some fruits.
For families and groups of 3-8, a mix of mostly quarts and pints is typically going to be most efficient, with some select half-pint jars for things like condiments and portable meals.
Larger families and groups in the 10-20+ person range would focus even more on quarts, although conditions might lend themselves to having some smaller jars available for individuals or pairs.
Totable Portions
Even with families and larger groups that can readily consume pints and quarts of each ingredient at a meal, we may want to snag a few flats of smaller jars. Those half-pints and quarter-pints can facilitate pack-able lunches and overnight-trip meals.
Remember: Modern humanity has been walking away from home and munching a midday meal for centuries, farm hands to loggers. We’ve been taking overnight trips – and eating prepared foods on them – for millennia.
Also remember: Not all disasters are equal.
We could very well have had life as we know it end within a family and be leaning on our food storage and preservation while the world continues around us. In Great Depression or Venezuela conditions, some work is available and we’ll still need to fuel that work.
Even being glass, canning jars are plenty tough enough for a rucksack or daily-carry bag.
They’re heavier than the MRE’s, tins, and pouches of just-add-water foods we commonly use now, but if we’re only carrying 1-2, it’s not an enormous weight suck, especially for “just” a daily lunch.
Right now, Ziploc-type bags and plastic storage containers are inexpensive and prevalent enough to make them more common for multi-day packers and daily lunches. That wasn’t always so, though, and canning jars do still see use for the latter.
In a personal or widespread disaster that limits our disposable income or disrupts normal supply chains either through pricing or availability, jars can easily return to being the more common container for daily and multi-day travel foods.
We can set them up a couple ways for our lunches and haversacks.
One, we can water-bath and pressure can small portions, providing a cup of soup, applesauce or fruit, a tub of fish or meat that can be consumed with some crackers or bread, or a bean dish to go with tortillas or bannock.
Two, we can set up simple mixes that we’ll add water to. That can be anything from bannock bread to instant potatoes, rice, couscous, or other small pastas.
Cooking options vary by what we packed and any given day. We can add water early and let them sit in the sun, use water we’re boiling fresh, or use a small pan or large mug as a double boiler to heat foods inside the jars.
Versatility Adds Resilience
Being able to adapt to situations increases our self-reliance. A variety of canning jar sizes can provide that in many ways.
Even so, start with the most economical and most common sizes. For many of us, that’s going to be pints and quarts, with only the odd smaller or larger jars mixed in.
