Hello guys! Today I'm posting a super self-indulgent lil drabble based on @ancientschampionau 's RealAge AU! (This is non-canon!! Just a silly concept!!)
This is 90% just me playing around with the idea of the boys story from the perspective of a random monster who lives in town! Light is a flame elemental who runs a small garden of their own, but mostly works for Grillby in his restaurant. They don't know nearly *half* of the gang's story, but they're fascinated by what they do learn over the course of a few weeks.
Uhhh. No proof-reading or anything here since it's just me being silly- Thank you Ancients for not minding me butting my grubby lil hands in and doin a goofy with it!
...
The day wasn't too busy. At least, it was never too busy in town, but sometimes it got busy in the little restaurant that they called their home away from home. Grillby's was the go-to spot for everyone in town, and some nights they'd have to bring out extra chairs just to seat everyone. Those nights were always the most charming, hearing all the familiar voices of their neighbors rise and fall like waves as they recounted their weeks.
Of course, Light liked unbusy nights just like this one too. Nights when they only had a few customers getting a drink or a late-night snack before they went home and hit the hay.
Right now there were just a few regulars who Light recognized. A bird monster, and a dog specifically were sat not far from them on the otherside of the counter. Light was awful with names, but knew that these two were here every night. ...And they knew the two always had some sort of drama they were eager to share. Grillby was less inclined to let them spread rumors in his earshot, but Light was always curious and willing to humor them.
"Ladies!" Light greeted the pair as they sidled up to the space before them, only the counter separating them. "How're you two doing tonight?"
Both monsters looked up at the excitable greeting, and they both seemed to perk up a bit at Light's presence.
"Oh, we're doing just swell, dear." The dog monster replied eagerly, her smile growing a bit. Light didn't miss how their flames reflected and highlighted the Grey that was growing around her muzzle. "We were worried we'd be stuck with your spoil-sport boss all night!" She teased then.
Light knew everyone was fond of Grillby. He was just likable like that. So when the bird laughed a bit, Light joined in.
"Hardly! Couldn't imagine a nice night like this without a good chance to hear the tea." Light assured them, which made them perk up even a bit more, "What do you have for me tonight?"
The ladies looked between eachother, before the bird monster made a little sing-songy whistle. It drew Light's full attention.
"We have a few newcomers to town!" She chimed, and the dog monster nodded her head in agreement. "They're staying with Sans at the moment. At least, that's what my son says he overheard!" She added. "That boy overheard a phone-call that nice Papyrus boy took from his brother, and it sounded sudden!" She sounded proud.
Light had to admit, they were surprised. Normally the ladies would tell them of a new batch of sheep brought in or a baby foal being born. On the more exciting days it'd be a scandal having to do with some young strapping man coming to town, but often that just ended up being the plot of a movie they'd watched that day.
Hearing names, though? Sans and Papyrus lived a little ways away, but Light knew of them. Hell, everyone in town knew them. The ladies had never tried to make a fake story about them, and Light was interested. New people staying in town with the brothers? Light had moved in from the city a few years back and they remembered being lucky they knew people here. If these newcomers were real, they were lucky to have the brothers to watch out for them.
"New folks you say? Have they been into town at all?" They asked curiously.
The two ladies shook their heads a bit, "No. Sounded like they just moved a few days ago." The bird monster answered.
The dog monster leaned forward, "I heard from the grocery that Sans was definitely buying a few extra things, though. Seems like they'll be staying a while." She deduced.
Light wasn't quite sure how right the ladies were, and they could tell they were going to try and dive into a guessing game that would most likely end up more insulting than insightful, so Light laughed a bit.
"Well, we'll just have to do our best to make them feel at home, right ladies?" They insisted a bit pointedly, and recieved nods of agreement that Light hoped were genuine.

They sighed, glancing around, already losing their focus as the women started thinking of exactly how many visitors there were, how they knew Sans, why they'd moved. The whole nine yards. And, admittedly, they too were curious. Light imagined they were probably just old friends stopping by to see the town before they headed on their way again.
It felt like hardly a minute had passed when they felt a hand pat their shoulder. It jolted them from their thoughts, and they realized that Grillby was back. They didn't need him to say anything to know it was getting close to closing time, and they scurried back towards the kitchen so they could start cleaning up for the night. And among their chores, the thoughts of newcomers in town faded, overlapped by just how many dishes they had piled up.... curse their laziness.
.
.
.
It'd been a month or two since the ladies in the restaurant had brought up Sans' new house-mates. At first Light had been sure they were temporary, but the assumptions of them staying seemed to be true. Light had heard just about every update on them directly from the ladies, anytime Grillby gave them the chance to ask.
Apparently it was five new skeleton monsters, all of them staying with Sans. Or, Crop. They were calling him Crop now, something about skeleton naming conventions. Four of them were adult guys, and from what Light had been told, they were a bit imposing. The fifth, though? A babybones. From what they'd heard, it was a little boy that the four adults had showed up with. That kid seemed to be their pride and joy, and maybe even what brought them to stay with Crop.
Light had seen a few of them out in town a few times, just in passing. The one with the hole in his skull was the first one they'd spotted out in the wild, helping Crop with errands. Then there was the one with the dark magic leaking from his sockets. His soul being on display was a bold choice, but Light hadn't had much time to oogle him, as he'd just been walking out of the market as Light was walking in.
They heard a rumor about the one that always seemed serious, a red scar under one of his sockets, but Light hadn't had the opportunity to spot him yet, and they'd seen the babybones across the street once, tucked in the arms of the one who always seemed to wear a hood.
Light really didn't like to pry into people's private lives, but there was just so much talk swirling around that it was hard to not get at least a hint of new news daily. Like, when they were shopping for a new shirt (they ripped their old one trying to climb up a tree and grab a piece of their laundry that had escaped the drying rack) they heard the shop-owner talking about how adorable the new little family in town was to the person in-line before them. When they were hanging out with some pals, their buddy said the hooded one had fixed his janky-ass cash register in just a few minutes. That thing had been broken longer than Light was in-town! And just lately they'd heard that Gerson was giving all of them high-praises.
Of course, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. No one knew where they came from, and they didn't tell either. Some people were weary, monsters with injuries like those? With the tired looks on their faces when they weren't really thinking about it? Monsters like that surely spelled trouble... but Light wasn't there to judge. They felt like an outside observer just piecing things together haphazardly as new information was thrown their way.
...and then they broke their lights.
Okay, in their defense it wasn't actually the lights themselves. Something in the wiring had fucked up while they were at work, and they came back to a pitch-black farmhouse and a shitty housemate who'd scared the hell out of them by jumping out from under the table as they passed by.

N, their awful (or Funny, as she'd put it) housemate had apparently gotten back from her own work and found the house like that, and she'd changed out all the lightbulbs before sunset. But, they didn't keep matches. Or lanterns, really. And she didn't know where to find the flashlight or her phone in the pitch black, so she'd decided waiting in the dark for her walking-torch of a friend to return was the best plan.
And, apparently, N had somewhere to be in the morning, but she'd already phoned in an electrician to come figure out where things had gone wrong and fix it by the time Light was awake to find the note she'd left about it. Joyous day, Light loved those electricians. Not.
.
One dreamless sleep and a tired morning. Light was in the kitchen, dressed in their work uniform and tiredly shoving a piece of fresh cantaloupe in their mouth, when their door knocker banged against the wood of the front door.
Weird, the electricians always dragged their feet. One glance at their phone revealed that this one was only a few minutes behind schedule.
They wandered to the door, gulping down their hasty breakfast before swinging the door open, and-
That was not a big city electrician. That was, in fact, the new guy in town with the hood that fixed Gerson's, like, entire house. Wow. Light wasn't expecting him, N could've at least warned them!
"Oh, good morning!" They unwittingly shifted gears, turning up their energy levels a bit, as to be welcoming. "I'm guessing my friend N called you about our electricity issue?" They questioned, holding the door open.
It felt like they towered over the skeleton. They couldn't see his eyelights from under his hood, but he seemed tired and slouched. Unenthused to be here at the very least, and at the most he seemed deeply offended by having to stand on Light's rickety old porch. His vibe check was not passing.
"Mm, yeah. Something about the wiring." He confirmed, seemingly begrudgingly. His voice was a little... quiet? That could've just been Light, though. They were used to the loud hollers of country-folk these days.
Light sighed in exasperation. "Yep! I'm sure she probably told you all about it, but the entire lighting set-up went dark yesterday while we were both at work." They agreed, stepping to move out of the entrance to their house, "Come on in, I'm sure you'll know better than either of us did."
The guy slipped in past them with a slight hum of confirmation, and Light noticed the toolbox clutched in one of his hands.
They trailed him after closing the door, and watched as he honed in on the nearest light-switch. Unsurprisingly he toggled it, clicking the switch on. Off. On. Off again.
Something felt a bit surreal. Light was convinced this guy and the other folks Crop was hosting were something like a urban legend, or a celebrity. They'd never been so close to them, and maybe it was a bit silly of them that they'd thought the guys were so imposing. I mean, this guy was in their house, and in just a few minutes he reminded Light more of a wet cat than anything the rumors about him or his friends had conjured up.
He seemed tired, and he did everything with this off-putting systematicness. He'd seemed fine with Light trailing him through the house, pointing out where the wiring went and connected and which switches did what. It'd just given them more of a chance to observe him.

In hindsight that was a little weird, but Light wasn't exactly the most normal monster in the world, so whatever.
But truly. This guy seemed small, and a bit thin compared to the others they'd seen from afar. He was ultra quiet, probably the quietest person in town, and even though Light never saw his eyelights, it constantly felt like they were the one being scrutinized, and not the other way around.
And, just like that, the skeleton had hummed and begun unscrewing a lightswitch plate just outside of N's room. Light watched curiously as he peeled the old cover back from the switch, and he poked at something with a nod to himself.
"The wires here are frayed, messed up the circuit." He voiced, and his words made Light jump a bit. The only sound for at least 15 minutes had been their steps and the crackling of Light's flames.
"Oh, seriously?" They asked meekly, seeing as he was already pulling some stuff out of his tool kit. Wires, it looked like. Maybe electrical tape too?
"Yeah. Rat probably chewed through it." Was all he responded with, and Light was once again left in that silent gap as they watched him work. And he was skilled, that was for sure. Light had half expected him to dismiss them so he could fuck around for an hour to waste their time like the city electricians used to, but in about 5 minutes flat he had the wires attached, and in a few more minutes the cover was screwed back in place.
A simple flick of the switch had the hall lights on in a split second. The shadow that fell on his skull darkened, but Light was too busy being impressed by his handiwork.
"Holy shit, they don't even flicker anymore!" They said in mild amazement, missing as the skeleton packed his supplies back up and seemed already prepared to go.
He led the charge back to the door, double-checking each light as they went, but they all worked better than ever now.

"Here, your pay!" Light suddenly broke their silence, digging into their pocket before producing a roll of cash that N had left behind. "Thank you for the help, man." They added, though they swallowed their need to offer him a cup of coffee or a quick snack. It seemed to them he wasn't compelled by the need for a classic southern-farewell.
He plucked the cash from theur hand, slipping it into a pocket on just jacket with a mumbled 'No problem.' before he was already on his way back out the door.
Thirty minutes or so, that was really all it had taken. He was like a spectre, in and out in near complete silence. Not abrasive, but not friendly... cautious? Yeah. In hindsight he did seem cautious.
Light decided in that moment that they'd be asking Grillby to give that man and his friends a discount the next time they stopped in.
.
.
.
They were really moving into Gerson's old farm. Light hadn't seen that one coming in the slightest, but when Dani had driven past them with a load of lumber in her truck, with another few following her, Light had realized they were heavily out of the loop.
Luckily for them, their boss knew what was going on already, and he was already telling them before they got two steps in the door with the latest crate of their supplies.
"A delivery?" Light questioned the fire monster as he heated the crate out of Light's grasp. Light was young and spry, but Grillby was miraculously strong.
They eyed him curiously, eyes skimming his flames, listening to the crackling pops that danced away from him. Was he really...?
"Gerson's old place? Those guys really moved in there?" They questioned, though they knew that Grillby wasn't one for gossip. He was dead serious when he said he needed them to run an order out to the place.
Apparently, Ellie had insisted Grillby contribute to their little gathering, celebrating the new neighbors and helping them settle in for good. Of course, he'd obliged, but he didn't want to leave the restaurant unattended for too long. So, Light would be taking the orders that way instead.
"Alright, okay!" They laughed a bit as Grillby nudged them using the crate in his arms. All the supplies were stacked out back, and it seemed all the food was ready in the kitchen.
Light gathered the food carefully, stacking it securely in their passenger's seat as Grillby kept moving in and out of the building, each time with another load of supplies.
And then they were off. With only a slight detour past their own place, they made it no problem to the place they were meant to be.
...Luckily, the crowd wasn't big, and it wasn't hard to find a place to park on the driveway. Light could see a small group gathered in front of the building, and found that a few more were already on their way back to theur trucks. The Sun wasn't quite setting, but Light hoped they hadn't taken too long.

Swinging out of the driver's side, they rounded to the passengers and gathered the food along their arms... having four sure did help them with the load.
They kicked the door of their truck shut and moved as hurriedly as they could towards a familiar bunny monster. She and her partner were the only reason they were out here.
"Food delivery, still warm!" Light called out when they got close enough that it felt appropriate. Only once a few faces had turned did they grin and continue, "Fresh from Grillby's, he sends his regards to our new neighbors!"
One of the few of the group that was gathered was that skeleton with the magic leaking from his eyes. Light had, once, wondered whether they were tears but had since dismissed that idea. He always wore a wicked grin whenever they crossed paths.
It was that skeleton and Ellie who approached them, breaking off from the little group who'd seemingly been helping out. Though, Light suspected by now that it might've become a social hour as the sun kept dipping lower.
"Huh, today is just full of pleasant surprises," the skeleton voiced as he got within rang to stop and stand before Light, "And to think this is just in time for dinner. Now Horror won't have to cook!" He... seemed to be thinking aloud.
Ellie came up beside him, smiling at Light, "Oh I was worried that stubborn monster wouldn't send anything at all!" She voiced, "Thank you, Light, for bringing all this up here." She was already moving forward, and Light let her scoop one of the covered plates off their arm.
"It's no trouble at all. Least I can do to return the help is ferry some food to you hard-workers." They replied easily, though they didn't miss how the skeleton was looking at them now.
I mean, he'd been looking before, but now Light felt that same weird feeling of being watched as they had at their house. A glance revealed that the skeleton had an eyebrow quirked at them.
"Return the help?" He questioned idly.
Oh, right, "Yeah! Your hooded friend was a big help to me a few weeks back. Fixed up my house's entire lighting circuit in a fraction of the time the city folks usually take." They said honestly, "But, based on what I've heard I'm probably not the first one to say that." They laughed a bit.
The skeleton seemed to relax a little. When had he even tensed? Light hadn't noticed there was any tension in his form until his shoulders slumped a bit.
"Ohhhh, right. Geez, Dust's met half this town and doesn't tell us anything." He mused. Light just tried to file away that the hooded one was Dust. "Well, speaking of Dust, he's probably already inside with the others." He said then, tilting his head towards Ellie, "You mind fielding the rest of these guys? Meet us back inside for dinner?"
Ellie assured this guy that she could handle it and passed off the plate she'd taken to him.
Light wasn't exactly informed on what was happening, but the skeleton just nodded for Light to follow him, and they did.
They passed the last few folks catching up and cleaning in the lawn before climbing some steps onto a porch. Then the skeleton swung the door open, and Light slipped in behind him easily. It felt like any other delivery to any other residents of the town. Familiar and practiced, even though they'd never even gone past the drive on this old property.
Inside the house was a bit barren, and pretty quiet, but that serenity only lasted for a few seconds before there was a call from the skeleton who led them inside.
"Guess who brought back the grub?" He called, recieving various voices hissing the name 'Killer' in various levels of frustration to his calling.
Light traveled into a separate area, a kitchen/dining room it seemed, following Killer with the meal, and they suddenly understood why they had so much.
Sat and stood in the space were the other three skeletons who'd moved in, along with Crop, Straw, and Dani. It felt like a family-reunion of sorts. The skeletons all seemed to be leveling Killer with frustrated and exasperated looks as he sauntered inside and set his one plate on the table before him.
"Killer, you gotta be more careful, Night was trying to get in a nap." Scolded one of them quietly, the one with the red scar under his eye.
And stood in the doorway, Light spotted exactly what he was talking about. Killer moved quick to approach the hooded skeleton, Dust, and Light initially missed what was curled up in Dust's lap. No, not what. Who.
There, tiredly blinking up towards the approaching Killer, was the babybones. He looked so comfy tucked in Dust's arms, and Light didn't envy him when Killer leaned and gently poked at one of his cheeks. "Sorry tiny boss, but we've got dinner to eat." He seemed to quietly amend as the little guy seemed unphased by the prodding.
Light had been a bit shell-shocked. Maybe it was the kid being so cute? Maybe it was exhaustion from a long day? Most likely it was just that they felt like a bit of an intruder on a nice family meal. Like there was an invisible wall separating them from the fondness permeating in the room.
Of course, that wasn't the case, and their arms were still keeping a few plates Wirth of food warm as they stood idly by. Watching as the room seemed to grow warmer at the presence of the babybones reawakening.
"Oh, Light! Should've known Grillby wouldn't come himself." They were jolted out of their thoughts by Crop. He acknowledged them, which brought a lot of eyes directly onto them. They hoped their flames didn't burn brighter in embarrassment.
They took a few steps inside, which brought them to just before an open seat at the table. "Great to see you again, Crop! You know how he is anymore about leaving the place un-manned." They voiced, trying to shake the gazes they could feel digging into them as they expertly laid the plates across the dinner table, sliding a few down the way with a practiced arm. "Besides, I would've been bummed if I hadn't gotten to greet the newly-moved in folks properly!"
They stepped back once the food was all arranged, but finally took a moment to meet the stares watching them. Killer seemed unbothered, already moving to sit. Dust would've likely been uninterested, but Light could see how the little one was staring at them. And the other two? The big one was alright. He didn't seem to mind once Crop had greeted them, but the one with the scar still seemed weary.
"Of course, I'll get out of your guys' hair so you can eat, but I heard people were bringing gifts, and my farm's not in season right now, so I had to improvise a bit." They said with a nervous grin as they popped open their inventory. A moment later, a simple black vase settled in their hands, and the room was lit up just a bit more.
They hadn't expected the surprised hum of surprise from one of the skeletons.
"Are those flowers, but on fire?" He asked, and Light caught that it was the one with the scar. They hoped that meant they could woo him a bit and make things less awkward.
"Basically!" The agreed. "Flame flowers, they're my speciality item I grow in my garden. They'll keep burning as long as you leave them in the sun and don't water them." They explained, before holding the little bundle of them out above the table. "They're non-flammable and the flames don't get hotter than an average spring day. The vase is stone too, better for them to last longer." They almost got lost in a rant about how exactly the plant worked, but reigned it in as they realized just how long they'd been talking.
"Mm, they seem pretty neat. Thank you." Came the voice of the one with the hole in his skull. "Would ya mind setting them on the counter there?" He gestured towards the counter behind them, and as they turned to place them, they realized Dani had begun talking about something. Maybe them, even? But they'd overstayed their welcome.
Dani or Ellie would get the plants back to them to get back to Grillby's, they knew that much.
They passed Ellie on their way out, only exchanging quick pleasantries before they split ways. The lawn was dark now, vacant besides Light's glow against the grass abd trees, abd their truck was the last one, parked a few paces from Crop and Dani's trucks.
They stopped by the restaurant to check in on Grillby, but he dismissed them for the night, so they simply went home. But, those guys... something about them was oddly familiar. Or, oddly unfamiliar? They couldn't place it, not with words, but all that really mattered was that they seemed to really have found a home here, just like Light had.
The town, with its many faults and troubles, seemed to attract the strangest people to call it home. That's what it was meant for though, right? This town looked out for its own. Maybe that was why it felt so right to have those five skeletons now living up on that previously vacant plot after so long.

Professor of Hoshino Aiology, I once again need thy headcanons, this time for miss streamer Ai!!! Do you think she'd be more of a Just Chatting type of cozy streamer or perhaps one that plays games? Maybe some other types of streams too…and the superchats thrown her way!!! 45510 has unlocked my brain for this AU where Ai potentially did more streams as an idol (and as a Hololive fan, this gave me brainrot)
The timing of this ask is so funny bc this has always been in my head as something Ai would pursue after B-Komachi in an 'Ai Lives' AU, but it's been particularly on my brain this week for (shifty eyes) reasons………….. so my headcanons in this regard are more freshly baked than usual…!!!
(also sorry in advance if any of this stuff is Off in regards to streamer culture, my genre of neurodivergence means it's hard for me to follow streams so this is all secondhand info LMAO)
BUT YEAH, like you said, since they mentioned the streaming in 45510 it's always been in my head as something Ai would do more of in a post B-Komachi world. Since at that point she'd be selling herself as a brand as opposed to a part of the group, I can see her getting into very carefully curated lifestyle vlogging and general influencer stuff. It's fun to imagine her with a YouTube channel like the new B-Komachi has where between music and other stuff, she uploads like, get ready with me/makeup tutorial vids, Q&As… uh, whatever else celebs put on their youtube channels, I mostly just follow Vocaloid producers and ASMR channels…
Actually now I'm saying all this, I realize that Ai being an online influencer could be an easy in for getting Memcho into new B-Komachi in an Ai Lives AU… they do a collab video for their channels and while they're talking about stuff, Mem casually mentions wanting to be an idol and Ai goes all eyesemoji about it…………..
AS FOR ACTUAL STREAMS THO… based on what's in 45510 and what Takahashi says about Ai's appeal an an idol being that she's nonchalant and easygoing, I think she'd do a lot of just, casual chatting hangout streams where she answers questions from the chat and just rambles about whatever pops into her head. I could also see her doing ASMR stuff too… not full on girlfriend experience type stuff, but those vids that are like, people testing out different fancy microphones. Actually, I just remembered while saying this that Takahashi appeared in a video last year for an ASMR cooking series called Voicoo and the voice she slips into pretty often in this video is very Ai… so I can easily imagine her doing something like this too, especially with the goofy ass voices she does for the veggies LMAO
I could totes see her doing gaming streams too, after the Da Vinci interview dropped that tidbit of her playing a ton of Tetris as a kid… she probably focuses on stuff that's mostly gameplay without any story, probably a lot of arcade-y, 90s stuff. I also think it'd be really funny if she turned out to be really good at Tetris without realizing LOL. Like, it's been years since she played and she's never played in front of other people before so she has no frame of reference for her skill level. But then the game starts and she's absolutely cracked and everyone in chat is freaking out and she's like ??? IS THAT GOOD???
The only reason she's not setting world records is because she doesn't have the time or inclination to learn rolling and grind out a score, but I just know she could do it if she wanted to….!! I just know it….!!!!!

Updating the sheet has me thinking about the cameo limbo Vic's currently in, and what DC should do with him.
Vic is in this weird position where I don't really think he should be alive. He's had one appearance that was at all meaningful to his arc and one goofy oneshot since his resurrection, and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to do anything with him other than put him in bullshit spy stuff, so it kinda just feels pointless. Unlike some other ex-dead-mentors, though, it's not like him being around is a *problem* for Renee's development. Killing him off again would just be cheap, and there's no reason not to use him now that he's around. So what do you do with that?
Well. Vic died with his heroic arc complete, having passed on his legacy and made peace with his unfinished business, and now he has to figure out what to do in a world where he doesn't have a history to ground him. As a reflection of both his time seeking a purpose after Hub City and his earliest relationship with Shiva, the answer could easily be "hang out and get into trouble".
See, my annoyance with his current position is because I feel like it's kind of a waste to leave him in a dropped (I think? I might've missed something, but I'm pretty sure the Lois Lane Checkmate stuff has been ditched) team/plotline that kinda sucked, not that I'm upset he's sidelined. As much as I want to see my beloved guy, I don't actually have a problem with him showing up once a year. My ideal status quo for him, short of manifesting my stupid knockoff Birds of Prey pitch into reality, would be something like the handful of appearances in the late 90s/early 2000s where he was wandering around playing poker. No team affiliation, no grand motive, just showing up in backups and cooldown issues between major arcs.
Vic has thrived as a side character in other people's books, and it would open up a lot of possibilities if he was set up in a place where writers can pull him for an issue or two without having to figure out whether any of the Checkmate stuff is still relevant or come up with a great idea for where to take him next. It's not that he couldn't develop further, but I'd much prefer him to stay static as a roaming weirdo than to rehash old arcs or go in a direction that cheapens his existing development. It's fine for him to be a supporting character in the communal toybox now that his story has ended, and he's a lot more likely to stay in people's minds and eventually be a part of something neat if he's hanging around.
That said, there are a few things about where he is as a person that I think would be worth expanding on if he's being set loose into canon to cause problems.
The first is that I want to know how he feels about being resurrected. I'm sure his reappearance would've felt weighty to someone who was a Vic fan when it happened, and focusing on Renee's reaction to him being back in Lois Lane was definitely the right choice, but looking at his appearances as a whole it ends up feeling... almost underwhelming? That might just be because making the spreadsheet broke my brain, but it's something any substantial appearance probably has to touch on. I don't even think it's weird that he's seemingly unfazed by waking up in an alternate universe, unlike some other characters who should probably have more feelings about being resurrected by continuity jank, but I do feel like there's a lot of room to look at *why* he's so chill. Even just as a contrast to a deeper exploration of someone else having a bad time about it, there are a lot of motifs to build from, and there's a lot you could do with how his self-perception has changed after yet another metamorphosis. (Based on the scraps of pagetime he's had, I'd point it somewhere in the direction of "he's been freed from old obligations, blurring the boundary between his Vic and Charlie personas.")
i also think there's a lot you could do with his old struggles with whether he was doing the right thing or just doing violence because he enjoyed it, and how he views himself now that he's stepped into a more Shiva-like role. This isn't a new development for him, but his initial shift into a wandering mentor wasn't something he planned - he initially left Hub City out of necessity, failed to start fresh, then latched onto Helena while seeking purpose. There's some interesting weight to him getting a chance to either have a fresh start somewhere else or return to Hub City without the weight of his history, and instead choosing to fuck around and intentionally get into trouble that has nothing to do with him, without even the excuse of mentorship.
There's also the problem of continuity housekeeping. It's not really necessary for tracking who remembers him since other heroes generally have their post-crisis continuity back, but the vibe of him roaming rather than returning home change a LOT depending on which version of Hub City exists (it tends to depend on Blue Beetle continuity, which is currently fucked), if Tot and/or Myra exist, and how long Vic was dead from their perspectives. Honestly there are a lot of good options here. I love Tot and want him to be a part of Renee's supporting cast, but the idea that Vic's civilian past literally does not exist is incredibly juicy.
Other than that... idk man. Just because I think he's underused doesn't mean I think he has to be important. Use him as a plot device for anyone who needs an annoying guy to make them introspect. Do more goofy oneoff mysteries. Let me write a teamup that sucks. Put That Guy In A Situation.

Hi...if you don't mind, can I ask something from Blue Lock? What do you think are Nagi and Reo’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic? Sorry if you've answered these questions before.....
Hihi and thanks for the ask, really don't think I've answered that here before, but I wanna keep it quick since, for how much I love them, it's so hard for me to put the emotions and feelings I have towards them into words that isn't a story about them.
For Nagi, I really think his greatest strength is how calm he's willing to be in most situations, I wouldn't say for any reason that his steady or emotionally intelligent but I think it's nice he's able to balance out Reo's hyperactivity. His dedication to Reo is definitely something else as well, many Reo haters that claim to be his fans really like to belittle that or make it a weakness where as I really think it's one of his greatest strengths; for someone who used to be so unmotivated by the world around him its amazing to see him grow to cherish someone and their wishes even if it means changing parts of himself that person has already accepted. My feelings for him shift constantly in time to how daft and goofy he can be but every time I remember he's truly experiencing the world for the first time because he chose to follow Reo, i can't help but love the complexity of his character even more.
For Reo, I feel a whole spectrum of things but I believe his greatest strength is his adaptability and charisma; he changes in time to his environment no matter how long it might take, like Isagi to some extent, he's emotional and inspirational but in such a raw way it feels almost unreal. He has everything one could ever need or want, so on the surface many wonder why he tries so hard, why he has to hang on and take the spot of those more in need of it because clearly if soccer doesn't work out for him he has better chances than 90% of of blue lock participants. The thing I think many people that like Reo can relate to his his search for fulfillment and excitement. To Reo, I believe soccer isn't just about the world cup, its what it'll prove once he gets it, what the road to it entails. I think that's beautifully encapsulated in him calling his notebook 'Road to the World Cup with Nagi'. It's wholesome, its beautiful and its such a teenage girl move that its adorable. For all his faults and how I know many can't relate to a rich boy's first world issues it think its safe to say many long for his charisma and wanting to be fulfilled. To feel like you've worked for something and earned the best result while having fun with it.
For both their weaknesses, on both sides I'd have to say it's a lack of communication. We can easily chalk it up to boys being bad at talking but for both I feel it stems much deeper. Nagi's never really had to communicate and Clearly Reo has always had to filter his words to appeal to the masses, he's been raised that way and his more direct side mostly comes out in Blue Lock as far as I've noticed (I could be missing something tho). They both struggle from lack of being as direct as they should with each other, expecting that since they work so well, the other should understand, they're partners after all, right?
Dynamic-wise, I think they can both be detrimental and empowering to each other. in the soccer sense, it's hard to put into words since I'm not much of a sports person but its definitely clear if one depends too much on the other they're plays will become stale and predictable. Nagi from when last I read still greatly depends on other's passing and Reo though a progressive all rounder, is very easy to see through because clearly, seven times out of ten he will pass to Nagi. I love that they plan to evolve and battle together but it's pretty hard for me to see how they will.
Romance-wise, I think they'll do well enough for each other. Reo's personality urges him to seek adventure and i think that's something Nagi can benefit from. Outside that, Nagi's dedication, calmness and optimism will definitely help keep Reo grounded when his mind tends to warp and tell him the worst. Every now and then they might tend to bring out the worst in each other or even have big fights thanks to poor communication but after realizing nothing is done out of malice and learning not to repeat mistakes, they'll surely grow into the most disgustingly clingy couple. I hate them so much ugh.
Well hope I kind of sated your curiosity and sorry it took me a while to get to this. Some time before I wanted to my phone got stolen and losing lots of the ngro fics (and other important stuff lol) on it made me a bit sour towards seeing the characters and ship. I'm doing better now and working on getting a replacement soon.
thanks for reading, hope there aren't typos and bye <333

Kisses #11 with Bob and maybe a pilot!reader?
PROMPT: 11. a kiss that says ''we're late for work, but let's be later''
thank you for this, nonny. Let's go!
A/N - I have another 10 or so kiss prompts. I'm going to close the requests. Thank you for your submissions, I'm enjoying writing them. Def overwhelmed but will continue with what I’ve already received xx
Tumblr media
“You need to go that way, I need to go that way,” you mumbled against Bob’s lips, reaching for the collar of his flight suit to pull him closer. He huffed a quiet hum, your actions not mirroring your words in the slightest.
You were about two minutes away from hearing the riot act from Cyclone, Bob was about to hear the same from Phoenix for the 200 push-ups she had coming because he was surely going to be late and well, you know, partners. Your lips had been glued together for the better part of five -
“Uh huh,” Bob said, pulling his grip against you tighter, his big hands pressing into your hips and curving your spine to him.
It all started innocently enough. You grinned at each other as you crossed pathways in the hallway. You have just left a morning meeting and Bob had just gone through his morning seminar, heading to pre-flight. “Just,” he lifted his wrist from your side, spying his watch over your shoulder. “90 more seconds and we can make a break for it, okay?”
Tumblr media
“On the clock, so sexy,” you muttered, rolling your eyes. He caught your lips again. Sweet Bob, how this was turning into a daily occurrence was baffling to you. You’d met him in his graduate year, and as deceptive as his shyness projected, Bob wasn’t overly timid around those that he knew. You’d got to talking one night over a few drinks at The Hard Deck and you couldn’t get enough of his stories of growing up on the farm but also needing to break the chain of his family’s expectations for what he truly wanted in life.
He thought that was to fly but his fate brought him to the backseat, a role he relished and knew he was damn good at too.
A few beers that night and he had you a quivering mess as he pressed his body against yours outside the bar. It never really eventuated further that. But this time was different. You had both found yourselves in the right places at the right time. Funny that.
His strong palm would wrap around your wrist, drag you into the closest classroom and kiss you ferociously until the very last second when you’d both escape before being caught. To this point... there were way too many near misses for your luck not to run out. And soon.
Your phone started to buzz and Bob only fought harder for your kiss, his slick tongue sweet against your own. You’d learned so much from him. Like... how not to underestimate the quiet ones.
“Bob, I gotta go. It’s Cyclone, I have another meeting - ”
He groaned against your lips. He knew he was in for it too. “Okay, okay,” he said, reluctantly and stepped away. He took his BCGs off (good lord, they weren’t meant to be attractive by any stretch... but Bob definitely found a way to make them work) and he rubbed the slightly foggy marks away against his flight suit before adjusting them back on his eyes properly, a goofy smile on his lips. Proud, pleased. Both.
Collecting yourself, you were scared the open the classroom door in case there was a gaggle of new students on the other side. You straightened your clothes and breathed evenly. “Have a good day, Lieutenant.”
“Yep,” was all he could reply as you ducked out and left him to his devices. Reading his wat, he knew: Natasha Trace was going to kill him. He was late.
“Think this is funny?” Phoenix asked as Bob scurried across the tarmac as she inspected their aircraft a few moments later. “You wanna go on this mission, we gotta be on our A-game.”
“Of course,” Bob said, his skin flushing.
She frowned at him, glad they weren’t spotted by any of their seniors. “I dunno who she is, Bob, but this is the second day in a row your mouth is covered in lipstick. I think yesterday’s suited you better though,” she smirked to herself, using her thumb to rid away the last of the evidence.
He nodded. “She’s everything,” he told his partner.
“She works here?”
He gave a single nod.
“Say no more - tell me everything tonight over a beer,” she instructed as Bob’s face brightened slightly.
“Well, ok.”

Love finding Phantom things when I least expect it! Never seen this one, it's from a 90s cartoon called The Triplets. These 3 sisters are always going on adventures because a bored witch sends them there. It's classic stories they're sent to, and one episode was of Phantom. It has some surprisingly good nods to the book. I miss how stuff was like that from back then. Have you ever seen this one? Highly recommended. Overlook the goofiness of the girls/how the show is, real treat is Phantom story.
Tumblr media
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for tipping me off to this! It's taken me a while to respond because you're right—though the triplets themselves are ridiculous, the rest is an absolute delight, and I wanted to do it justice with a gifset.
I was surprised not to have heard of the show, as I was a '90s kid myself, but it looks like it originated in Spain? If the internet is correct, this particular episode was aired in 1999. The English dub is here for anyone who wants to watch it!
I really hope to stream it sometime soon, and then we can discuss why the Phantom's boat is a bird with a headlight.

The Omniscient Archives AU
Silly goofy little crossover AU between ORV and TMA, that which the name is extremely ironic due to it being run by a Stranger Avatar. Some character info : archives team edition.
Kim Dokja -28, head archivist of the Omniscient Institute -horror fanatic -massive skeptic and denies real horror 99% of the time -read way too many horror stories as a kid -he thinks he’s just enjoying this job that’s exactly like his hobby (half denial) -backstory unknown
Yoo Joonghyuk -28, archival assistant, promoted from library -insomniac -encountered something extremely close to a fear god when he was a child (The End) -he forgot about it, but finds himself dreaming accurately prophetic dreams about the deaths of people around him -has been suffering with that since he was little -btw he couldn’t ever save a single person with his dreams -joined the institute to find answers about his missing childhood memories and prophetic dreams -the dreams have been rather silent since he’s joined, so he never left
Yoo Sangah -27, archival assistant since the former archivist, Han Sooyoung -the only functioning brain cell of the team besides Joonghyuk -gifted kid burn out, bored with general knowledge, so she said fuck this and decided to work a super mysterious job -language master -doesn’t deny the horrors, but doesn’t actively try to pursue it either -never had a run in with an avatar before (hooray! hope it lasts)
Lee Hyunsung -29, archival assistant, promoted from Research -big brother of the team -he’s trying his best to do his job, Sangah is his mentor figure being like “yay!! You did it!! Here’s a cookie, keep up the good work :3” -lost a close friend in the military due to them slowly becoming a buried avatar and refusing to feed on fear so they died very horrifically, also terrifying things started happening around the base too, soon after that -joined institute to find some answers to that incident -dad jokes -thinks Joonghyuk is the head archivist 90% of the time

the first five nights at freddy's game was one of the first things i remember seeing when i was younger that gave me a feeling similar to those that "liminal space" photos give off
this shot of pirate cove in particular was one of them
Tumblr media
the star pattern felt like something i would have seen somewhere as a baby or something
also cold take ik but the animatronic designs from the first game were some of the absolute best in the series
they manage to look like they could be animatronics from an actual children's establishment during the 80s or 90s like they look friendly on stage (this is one of my favorite fnaf images of all time)
Tumblr media
but with different lighting and just the right angle they are creepy as shit (i know this image has been memed to death but it is still freaky on its own i mean the later games can barely ever come close to this)
Tumblr media
and these two sides of them manage to coexist. their creepiness FEELS like it could have been unintentional. they're not too cutesy to not ever be scary at all but also not overdone to the point where they just look goofy and unconvincing (looking at you, FNaF Plus)
they remind me of the Cyberamic style of animatronics from chuck e cheese where they look cartoony and cute to some but unsettling to others (as a cec/rock afire fan myself i can understand both sides)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also another cold take that i really agree with: another part of why the first game was so cool is because of how subtle the lore was
i'm not trying to be all "WAAAAAAHH BOOO THE OLD DAYS WERE BETTER THE FNAF STORY SUX" because i don't hate the story (at least in the older games) and i don't at all disagree with the choice to flesh out the story more. it was a necessary part of continuing the title at that point and turning it into a series (also, people probably wouldn't still be talking about it today)
but part of what made fnaf 1 so intriguing is that you knew nothing. you didn't KNOW who these characters were. you didn't KNOW the history of the company, or anything about those involved in creating it. you didn't KNOW if the place was really haunted or if you were just hallucinating. hell, you didn't even know much about phone guy, YOUR ONLY COMPANION, other than that he Worked In That Office Before You at some point (who knows how old those messages really were?)
the only real hints of a backstory you get are things phone guy mentions OR the chance to catch a rare glimpse of the newspaper clippings in the east hall corner
Tumblr media
even going into freddy's knowing nothing, you can tell it's pretty run down. there is garbage all around the office and hallways, cobwebs under your desk and in the doorways, weird grime covering the walls, and clumps of wires hanging from the ceiling. multiple of these aspects can be seen in that one above image.
all of that combined with the ambient noises (the ghostly wind-like sounds, weird random knocking, distant carousel music to name a few) work to give you a sense of dread. the whole building felt haunted, not just the robots. even if you haven't read about the tragedies or heard from phone guy, you might still get the sense that something terrible happened here.
Tumblr media
but there is one thing you do know: Fazbear Entertainment is a shady, deplorable organization. five children lost their lives to a sick individual, and they stay open. company's gotta survive, after all. assuming foxy (or any of the others) did the Bite of '87 (we are looking at a fnaf 1-only universe here) they just keep it in the building and don't bother to even remove the contraption that took out someone's brain.
and of course if you, the employee who has to look after this dumpster fire of a pizzeria, get hurt or killed on the job, to quote phone guy: "A missing person report will be filed within 90 days, or as soon as property and premises have been thoroughly cleaned and bleached, and the carpets have been replaced"
i think that quote speaks for itself
Tumblr media
(i despise how they made the sketchiness and apathy of the company over-the-top in an effort to be funny in the later games i much prefer it being a little more subdued like this but i am getting back into boomer complaint territory so blagh)
this post is getting MUCH longer than i expected it to so here is a small list of Little Things i love about fnaf 1 that add to its overall feel that doesn't really carry over to the other games
the groaning noises sometimes made by bonnie and chica when they reach your office. what is that exactly? is it their voice boxes or whatever else inside them breaking apart? or is it the ghosts? what if those kids are still fucking alive?
the "IT'S ME" phrase that appears relatively often during gameplay. what does that mean? who is trying to talk to us? is it the ghost of someone we know, like phone guy? or one of the kids? did we know one of the kids?
the whole power outage sequence. still chilling
the foxy attack sequence. you're just playing normally when suddenly this animatronic you've never even seen before runs down the hall and pops into your office to kill you. even though the scare really only works once it's still well-done
the fact that we know nothing about our protagonist. it works in this game because it raises several questions that could be asked. who is mike schmidt? why does he keep coming back to freddy's, even though he knows it's deadly? does he want answers? or is he just that desperate for money? is he familiar with freddy's? did he know someone involved? was he the killer?
ditto but for the killer himself. back then, we didn't read about him in the paper and think of the mad scientist furry who co-founded the restaurant and built robots that killed his kids. we read about him and wondered who he was. are we him? or was it phone guy, our only friend? was the person they arrested really him, or is he still out there? and most of all, why did he do what he did?
what the hell was golden freddy? hallucination? ghost? nobody knew
the fact that foxy's eyes are always glowing while the others don't. this has no significance i just think its neat (this is true for all his future appearances too i think)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
idk how to conclude this so here are some more pics that i find creepy. happy 10th anniversary fnaf heres to another 10 years of fantasy and fun
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(can you tell i find chica the scariest)

The History Boys: Set in a grammar school in Sheffield in the 1980s, the show follows eight pupils as they prepare to take their entrance exams to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. They are led by the eccentric Hector, an ageing teacher who has a unique take on their General Studies course. However, his teaching is brought into question by the young Irwin, who has been brought in to make sure that the boys excel in their Oxbridge exams. Mediating between the two is Mrs. Lintott, a teacher who goes by the book. All three teachers face their own demons, as they attempt to guide the boys through examinations, interviews, and personal struggles.
Peter and the Starcatcher: A young orphan named Boy and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island. They know nothing of the trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains an otherworldly cargo. Aboard the Neverland, the boys are discovered by a young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own, and his sidekick Smee – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. As they head for a faraway land, Molly and Boy learn about love, friendship and forge an unbreakable bond.
Propaganda under the cut!
The History Boys:
every time I look at this play I find even more resonances woven between its different scenes and characters, truly both a comedy and a tragedy at the same time, and an amazing coming of age story that rings so much truer than the thousand cliches that exist on the subject
Rewrote my brain chemistry aged approx 16. All British actors of a certain age were in this play, the original line up is iconic (James corden before all the boring American shit lol) “history… it’s just one fucking thing after another” Great music! Miss Lintot trying her absolute best. “You complacent fuck”. So so funny but so so heartbreaking
Obnoxious northern boys being taught how to repackage history to make their essays more interesting, jokes about the 14 foreskins of Christ, the experience of that moment of time you will never get back
It’s about the learning it’s about the references it’s about making interesting adults it’s about poetry you don’t need now but will understand later, it’s maybe the truth isn’t as important as the argument, it’s about growing up, it’s about thinking you’re grown up when you aren’t, it’s about the yearning and the songs from before your time, it’s about women following behind with the bucket
Peter and the Starcatcher:
hands down best adaptation of the peter pan stories ever
this is literally the most heartwarming and heartbreaking play i have ever witnessed. its about the origins of peter pan. its insanely funny. its so sad. its about friendship and family and maturity and growing up. i cried so hard. the line "it has to hurt - thats how you know it meant something" has really stuck with me.
play of all time forever. silly goofy for like 90% of it and then goes and makes you cry in the last scene. the protagonists are all thirteen and it fucking shows (positive). the villain is captain hook minus the hook and one million times more queercoded. the other "villain" is a small italian man living on an island nowhere near italy. the other other villain fails to flirt with a girl and then dies because he gets a cat thrown in his face. the word "dyke" is in the script. christian borle was in it can we get the christian borle girlies in on this please. i still have a worm in my bag from the production i did. this show is my best friend forever

hey im interested in getting into ygo do u have any recs or recommended orders of reading/watching theres a lot from the looks of it on anilist so i was wondering about your preferences o:
ANON I ABSOLUTELY DOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm only about halfway through the sequels (i just started arc-v) so I'm not like the most knowledgable person in the world but I can give you my personal recs. COME CLOSER!!!!!
First of all, every yugioh series is totally independent from each other (sort of - gx is set directly after dm and leans on its worldbuilding quite a bit, and 5ds takes place in the same universe as well though a bit further in the future, but you can watch them on their own with no problem) so if there's one in particular that grabs you there's nothing stopping you from jumping straight to it - that being said I've been watching all of the anime in release order (ygo dm -> gx -> 5ds -> zexal -> arc-v (i am here) -> vrains -> sevens -> go rush) and I've been enjoying it a lot. I also wouldn't recommend watching arc-v in particular without having watched the ones before it as it probably won't really have any impact for you. Now for specific recommendations (in order) !!!! SORRY THIS GOT REALLY LONG.
yugioh manga - START HERE !!!!! the original story by kazuki takahashi. high school boy inherits an ancient magical artifact containing a spirit that's really, really good at playing games (and inflicting psychological torment on bullies). I have to give it a warning for some shonen-typical creepiness towards female characters in the early chapters, but it's REALLY worth reading and it's a story that's so near and dear to my heart. this is the fastest and easiest way to start loving yugioh. Its worth noting that the original ygo manga is the ONLY manga (afaik) that tells the same story as its anime + i haven't read any of the others aside from a little bit of the gx manga, so the rest of my recs are anime-only
(optional) yugioh season 0 / 1998 / toei - a one-season anime based on the early manga chapters. if you like the horror vibes of the manga you'll enjoy this a lot. really fun 90s animation with a killer soundtrack, but generally not considered """canon"""
yugioh duel monsters - this is the one most people watched as a kid. it's an adaptation of the manga, but with most of the early chapters cut out so as to get straight to the card games + some extra arcs added in. this is most people's favorites and the most popular! you can also watch this in lieu of the manga, but you will be missing a LOT of the early story or experiencing it in condensed form (and the plot of ygo dm is already patchy At Best).
yugioh gx - direct anime sequel to ygo dm. boy goes to gamer school to become the next king of games + high school shenanigans ensue. gx is a really charming, goofy romp with a super lighthearted s1, an interesting s2 and a shockingly engrossing s3. s4 (the last 25 episodes or so) never got dubbed in english so if you're a dub enjoyer like me you'll have to switch to subs to get the full story
yugioh 5ds - direct sequel to gx, though further in the future than gx was to dm. card games on motorcycles are real and so is class warfare and the surveillance state. iirc this is the only yugioh anime that was rated 4+ - it has a slightly more mature tone but there's still plenty of lighthearted fun to be had. Really strong s1 with a second season that falls off a little bit, at least to me, but is still absolutely worth watching. s2 is missing a number of episodes in the english dub, so again if you're a dub enjoyer you will find yourself quite confused by the end. its probably worth watching s2 entirely sub-only (something i still need to do)
yugioh zexal - the first of the sequels that is possibly set in a different universe entirely (or just the really distant future). middle school boy gets a magic necklace from his dad that has an alien inside. zexal is a lot of peoples favorites and now that I've watched it I GET IT. Really strong story + pacing from beginning to end and a really endearing cast of characters. It's silly and goofy and fun but DAMN DOES IT COHERE.
yugioh arc-v - the first of the sequels that is DEFINITELY set in a different universe entirely. this is the one I'm watching currently so i don't have much to say about it yet GET BACK TO ME ON THIS ONE. this one boy's dream is to become the greatest clown who ever lived (tragic) (inspiring)
INHALES LOUDLY. that was probably more info than you wanted BUT I HOPE THAT HELPED AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT? again I recommend reading the original ygo manga first and i think that will give you a good idea of whether you are down with the yugioh silliness or not. It's important to remember that this is a very silly anime series about card games but like. As long as you can buy into the worldbuilding and accept that this is just How Things Are in the world of ygo, it's suuuuuuuch a fun world to sink your teeth into.

I was going to reblog with a comment but that post is already super long. But so true ! Like the ninja assassin thing with Dick is a modern retcon something that would be a Tim Cass or Damian thing to do. But writing a flashback for an adult Dick in the 2000s would be weird. By the 1960s he was firmly in canon 18 and in college. How are you gonna go back to the era of goofy and be like this is Dick’s angsty teenage years involved getting turned into a vampire and fighting Bruce over dating Talia. It just doesn’t make sense with how Long comics keep going. 80 years of comics and he’s only what 28. Like it’s very hard to keep a consistent character when everyone wants to make Dick Jason and Bruce new characters every few decades
Absolutely!
My personal view about how they kept retconning Dick's personality as a child and his relationship with Bruce is that it's a mix of complex things and bullshit.
The complex things is yeah, Dick and Bruce had their share of problems when Dick was growing up. They did start bumping heads a lot, but it was more like "this kid is turning into a man and is starting to clash views with his father (who is already someone who's not easy to deal with)" and "that's the part where he starts to develop who he is as person" (I won't get much into that because I haven't read many comics regarding Dick transition from Robin from Batman & Robin to Robin from Titans until Nightwing in the pre-death of the family era.) than the borderline abusive and toxic relationship they started to introducing in the late 90's to early 2000's portrayals of them.
It's complex because after rebooting everything it's hard to introduce such a long and gradual process that took almost ten years of development that is Dick's emancipation not only from working with Bruce but also following his every step as boy wonder. Specially if we think about the huge fall out they had right after Jason died.
It's bullshit because they started with those retcons when we had that long and embarrassing period of Super-hero history (late 90's to early 2000's) where everyone was trying to make super-heroes popular again but following alongside with a palpable embarrassment and self-conscious shame regarding any silliness and/or whimsical side the superhero universe. Like "we're making superheroes stories but this is for adults, this ain't for children 😡😡". Nobody wanted to be the "60's Batman TV show everyone makes fun of" and everybody wanted to be Alan Moore.
We had all this writers who grow up reading "Death of the family", "The Killing Joke", "Batman Year one" add were dying to recreate the 80's dark period glory, even if they didn't had the same writing skills for that.
I mean hate the Killing Joke all you want (I know I do), it has a shit tone of good writing.
It's bullshit because everyone was still sore about how Batman turned into a joke in the 90's after that one movie and for some reason everyone blamed Robin. It's bullshit because comic books are always influenced by the popular media around them, and while 40's Batman had the American Way and American Family Values™ 🦅🦅🦅, 80's Batman has Scarface, Taxi Driver and long urban tragedies.... 90's have Die Hard and every extra power macho fantasy under the sun.
I mean... This was 90's Nightwing.
Tumblr media
he's so big and so stupid and one day I'm gonna top h–*gunshots*
No one wanted to see "good father" Batman, hell no one wanted to see any emotional shit in comics? Emotions??? In my manly comics??? Miss me with that gay sit emotions is for girls 😡😡 I wanna see big buffy man making his enemies cry 🔥⛓️☠️💪☠️😡⛓️🪚🔧
So you reach early 2000, everyone kinda hates or is kinda embarrassed of Robin, Batman is a former shadow of the man and the father he used to be. But you still wanna introduce new readers to your character (Dick Grayson) that (for better or for worst) is loved but only by the people who already know him, you're still embarrassed of his silly origins and the whimsical part of it.
So what do you do?
Personally I think writers thought Dick had it too easy as Robin, personally I think they were obsessed about making it real, personally I think everyone was obssessed and trilled with the idea of being the next Tim Miller and making their one fresh real edge introduction of the boy wonder. Personally I think this is all the new 52 was absolutely on for the Batfamily.
Personally I believe (and this is more a optimistic take) some writers were creatively trying to tie Dick's anger issues as Nightwing to his origins as Robin.
You have this chance of one in million (at te time) to reintroduce Nightwing (reintroduce Robin), now you can make it as real as gritty and as edge as you want. You can make it Robin cool again, you can introduce in a way that will sell well the dark story you where preparing for this character. And you also can deny any father and son relationship he could had have with Bruce Wayne and keep the big beef strong man without feelings reputation that people have been manufacturing by choice into Batman from ten years by now.
And what is more dark and character building than an abusive father?
I think writers thought that making Bruce abusive towards Dick and Dick resentful towards Bruce was the best way to launch this new universe as realistic and grittier. Not only making Dick's Robin introduction (and origin) more "real" but also separating Bruce even more from a emotional and father like figure that for some reason some writers (and fans!) despised to much.
Killing so many birds with one stone might as well call yourself David from the Bible.
And they were so certain this direction would be a success that the just notice their mistake now.
Anyways... A load of bullshit.
I personally don't mind Dick's Robin having anger issues, I think it's a natural progression from his first real serious introduction from back in the 80's, I also think it adds more to his character tying up his first trauma along with a long life of others and the result of having to deal with a frustrating job (that is vigilantism is) since literally ever. I like the idea that the perfect Robin wasn't perfect all the time and he also had (and has) other side of his personality that isn't as nice or likeable as it should and that's a thing he consciously have to work on as a person since he was a child.
However I also think writers did took to far sometimes and Dick history and specially his relationship with Bruce suffered from it. And I also agree that if everyone tries to reboot, retcon and fucking "subvert" a character every fucking ten years you won't even have a fucking consistent character to begin with (gestures vaguely to Jason Todd, Deadpool and now poor fuckin Damian and their wreck of comic book history).
