It had to be beach adjacent. I had a bit of fun incorporating elements of her skirt pattern, some bright green accessories, and I ended up keeping the oar for a pose.

I've been hyperfixated on this movie for a while, sooo... How does Moana tie into your modern AU?

Moana

In New Zealand, there was a small Maori village near Auckland called Motunui. Tala Waialiki moved there with her 3 year old son Tui to start a new life after divorcing her husband.

Tala found a job as a receptionist in a hotel in the city, and she and her son settled.

As Tui grew up, he loved sailing on the river near Motunui, especially together with his best friend. Whenever he had a bad day at school, Tui would take his small boat and sail across the water of the river.

But tragedy would strike. When Tui was 17, he and his best friend went out sailing again, but a storm hit that caused rough water, and their boat got destroyed. While Tui managed to get above water, his best friend didn't and drowned...

This obviously traumatized Tui. He quickly developed aquaphobia, and abandoned sailing as a whole.

Instead he focused on school, spending time with his mother and friends, and Motunui in general.

Eventually, he started a relationship with a fellow classmate named Sina. The two married 3 years later, and were blessed 2 years later with a daughter who they named Moana.

Everything was perfect for the Waialiki family. Tui sold Maori paintings while Sina worked part-time at a bakery, leaving Tala to take care of Moana while both parents worked. Until the obvious happened.

From the age of 1, Moana was fascinated with water and the river. She'd sometimes go to the river near Motunui and play with the water. Tala often watched, making sure nothing happened to her granddaughter, smiling seeing her happy. This strengthened the bond between grandmother and granddaughter.

Obviously, when Tui found out and saw his 1 year old daughter near the river, he wasn't happy, and kept her away from the water, not wanting Moana to experience the same fate his best friend suffered.

For years, Tui tried everything to keep his daughter away from the river. He taught her everything about their culture and village, told her to focus on school and getting good grades, and encouraged her to spend time with her family.

But through those years, Moana always felt drawn to the river, wanting to sail across it with her two favorite pets, her pig she named Pua, and a chicken she named Hei Hei.

At least her grandma Tala supported her, that was obvious. She was her best friend and the only one who understood her. As well as her adopted cousin Maui. Despite his inferiority superiority complex, the two were pretty close, considering each other as cousins.

Just like her father, Moana went to school in Auckland, taking the bus to and back. Her grades were decent, but she excelled in geography and English. She dreamed of someday working on a ship someday, wether that'd be simply serving drinks on a cruise ship or actually steering one herself! That sounded cool! Well, as long as it wouldn't be the Titanic.

Finally, when Moana was 16, she found her father's old boat and took it to sail across the river, together with Maui, Pua and Hei Hei.

Sure, she’d probably get in trouble for this and her dad would definitely scold her, but that didn’t matter right now. That would come later.

Maui

Only a few months after he was born, Maui's parents didn't want him anymore, and dumped him in front go a random orphanage...

For 8 years, Maui had to live in the foster care system, being passed around from family to family who didn't really care about him anyways.

But eventually, after the umpteenth time of being re-homed, Maui was placed in the home of a nice lady named Fiti. Unlike all the other foster-families he stayed at, she was nice and actually cared about him and his well-being.

Fiti lived alone in a small house near Motunui. She was a botanist, and was best friends with Sina since high school.

While she was never interested in romance or any of that, Fiti always wanted a child through adoption. She wanted to offer children who had less a home.

So, she became a foster parent, and eventually took in Maui, a boy who was in the foster care system for most of his life.

Despite knowing that Fiti actually cared for him, Maui still felt the urge to prove himself that he was good enough for her to adopt, that he was no trouble child.

After some time, Maui wanted to stay with Fiti. She was nice and actually cared for him.

So, Fiti adopted the boy, and both of them were happy. Finally, Maui had a home.

As a 'Welcome Home' present, Fiti gave the boy a pet parakeet, who he named Mini-Maui.

Like Moana, Maui went to school in Auckland. His grades were okay, a bit lower than Moana's, but still okay. His favorite subject would be music.

He and his now-adoptive-mother often visited the Waialikis. Maui and Moana would play near the river, while Fiti and Sina would catch up.

Maui and Moana would grow up as cousins, and they'd often hang out near the river, wanting to sail across it.

Despite his inferiority superiority complex he still had, Maui finally felt like he had a family.

I always loved how in moana,her grandmother doesn't give her a motivational speech to tell her keep going after she failed,tala acknowledged that this mission was a big responsibility and told her that it's ok to stop. The choice to continue the quest was entirely moana's and her grandmother and ancestors encouraged her; which made it far more impactfull

Who Is Allison Moore?: A Disney's Wish Mystery

OK, this is a little off the rails and random but this has been driving me crazy since I looked into it last night.

So, Disney's 100th Anniversary movie Wish is coming out soon and people have had a lot of hot takes about it so I wanted to do some digging. As part of that, I looked at the writers and two people have a "Screenplay by" credit: Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore.

Jennifer Lee, of course, wrote Frozen--their biggest princess hit in the modern era so that makes total sense to me. If you're coming out with a new princess movie for the big centennial of course you'd tap her. But I'd never heard of Allison, and when you look at her name on Wikipedia:

No blue link. So I headed to IMDB to check out her credits, figuring maybe she was some hot new talent recently promoted from within who did storyboards on some recent projects like Moana or something. But when I went to her IMDB page, this is what I found (after a brief mix-up with a Dexter's Lab actress):

Her Producer credits come up first and...huh. That's a lot of adult live action TV projects. Well, maybe her Writing credits are where this starts to make sense:

What? That can't be right, can it? The only vaguely Disney-esque thing on that credit list is Beauty and the Beast and, to be clear, that is a CW reboot of a 1987 procedural with the logline, "A beautiful detective falls in love with an ex-soldier who goes into hiding from the secret government organization that turned him into a mechanically charged beast." And she wrote two episodes on it.

And look at Disney's official page about Wish!

Everyone else on this page has credits that make sense--Frozen, Frozen 2, Raya, Encanto. And the two credits they list for Allison?

Night Sky and Manhunt.

Night Sky, an Amazon Prime show that she wrote one episode for and was cancelled after one season. And Manhunt--and show about hunting the UNABOMBER--that ran for two seasons and that she wrote two episodes for. Those are her two credits that they put up there next to Frozen and Encanto.

I have been scouring the internet trying to figure out who this woman is and how she got this job and I have come up *empty*. This is the big 100th anniversary movie! Why would they have one of the two screenplay writers be someone who seemingly has never done something like this before??? Like, I understand that not having done something before doesn't mean you can't do a good job, but it usually means you don't get the keys to the biggest most anticipated projects in the company's history!

They presumably could have gotten anyone they wanted for this and they picked this person and I have zero clue why and it's driving me crazy. If anyone has ANY information that could illuminate this at ALL--an interview, a social media post, gossip from your cousin who's a gofer at Disney--please let me know because I feel like I'm going full Pepe Silvia over this.
