"Remember, my darlings... evil will preach a gospel with half-truths. It smells good, but it lacks taste and substance." MY REVIEW: I've always loved vampires. I thought this would be another generic vampire book, but WOW, was I wrong. This entire story is well-crafted and extremely imaginative. The pacing is great and the world is thought out, and every new discovery, every moment that introduced the reader to something even better than the last situation was perfectly executed. This book is FAR from disappointing, and a refreshing take on vampires--and demons? Oh, yeah. A lot of the fight scenes felt like I was watching an anime, which was a lot of fun. There were even lines that had me laughing out loud. The creepypasta and horror aspects were very well done and had me mesmerized. The creatures that were formed were highly terrifying. All in all, I loved every aspect of this story, and I recommend this for anyone who loves bloody vampire stories where vampires have been integrated into society (kind of reminds me of Tru Blood, come to think of it, but WAY better). This is definitely up there in my favorite books. It was a joy to read. ​ SUMMARY: How do you respond when the same people who wish your kind extinct are the ones that need saving? What is the right thing to do? The world is falling apart, and the space between realities are shrinking more and more everyday. So I got my hands on the Grim Hollow Monster Grimoire and while I'm ALWAYS excited to read about a new batch of critters ( 430 PAGES of em this time) it's fascinating how many times I've seen some of these notes played before:

The gods are dead, the main religion has turned into a zealous and hateful inquisition focused on persecuting spellcasters. In many ways however the spellcasters are worthy of persecution because they're trowing around curses and creating monsters from the bodies of innocents, and have performed several magical warcrimes.

The classic staples of fantasy are here, but they're gross: The dragons are full of a rotting sickness, the angels have all fallen to sin (yes, the gluttony one is body horror levels of fat), and I haven't gotten to the end of the book yet but before I do I bet you there's going to be a unicorn but EVIL in some way.

As someone who collects a LOT of 3rd party d&d material I've seen too many of these edgy reimaginings to count. They almost always fall into the same dynamic of "things you know but fucked up in one of three ways" and I can't help but feel like they take up space from some of the way more inventive creatures presented in the book: Evil fancy clothes that possess you and compel you to sew more of them! Untrustworthy deer that seek to collect magic items! Napalm dinosaur! These are genuinely clever critters that spark ideas for adventures instantly, and that to me is the whole point of a monsterbook.

I think I might need to do a full writeup regarding my thoughts on grimdark fantasy because I have too many to include in this simple first impression. Think you folks would be down for that?

26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

I know I talk too much about the Hagrid x Monsterbook fic, so here are some more that I have no idea what I was ingesting when I wrote them:

The Seven Sexcruxes of Tom Riddle (2.5k, OS): Hagrid x Tom Riddle- This crack story taken seriously explores the unlikely romance of a troubled dark wizard and the man he’s definitely NOT in love with. Mostly funny, very filthy, and a tiny bit sweet. Rating: E

The Golden Trio is Mine (3.5k, OS): POLY Draco x Harry x Hermione x Ron. Three friends find themselves catering to Draco’s every need one night. Ron wears a crown, Harry crawls like a dog, and Hermione makes a lovely musical cock warmer. There may be an inappropriate use of the Firebolt. A crack fic featuring Dom Draco and lots of kinks. Rating: E

27. What is your most and least favorite part of writing?

Most favorite- when the keys are clacking, 80 wpm and my brain is going "YES! YES! YES!"

Least favorite- editing the "YES! YES! YES!" rough draft and realizing I have an adverb problem, reuse the same ten adjectives, don't know what the hell to do with commas, and generally start to question my sanity and skills, etc.

28. On average, how much writing do you get done in a day?

1-2 hours, active writing. I'm not even going to count all the avoiding time in between lol

Quick review: Battlezoo Bestiary 1&2

I have a deep and abiding love for monsterbooks, and nothing makes my day like getting to page through one and add fun new critters to my expanding menagerie of threats. While there are a ton of factors that go into making what I consider a "good" monster book the two most important IMO are the originality of the ideas and how well they translate into engaging storyhooks. A monster needs to not only stand out from all the THOUSANDS I've seen in some way, but also needs to have enough deapth that I could run it in multiple encounters or plotlines and come away with something different. Not every monster in every book passes both these tests, but they tip the scales significantly.

The Battlezoo series takes a REALLY interesting turn on this by effectively doing american idol, but for monsters, having peolple across the internet enter concepts and then holding a vote to see who makes a cut ( which is the same process behind the robot and monster design in pacfic rim so you KNOW its a winning stratagy).

My verdict? The first battlezoo gets the full dailyadventureprompts recommendation as I was FLOORED by the creativity on display. Monsters at all CRs that knocked it out of the park with interesting hooks, concepts, looks, and mechanics.

The sequel, strange and unusual falls just a biiiit short. Don't get me wrong, Its still a stellar monsterbook but its entries lack the exact spark the original had, which frequently had me thinking "this is the best monsterbook I've read in a while". Just a few too many monsters lacked clear motivations that would bring them into conflict with a party outside of a random encounter, or echoed concepts I'd seen in other books before, or even from previous in the same book ( multiple instances of killer coinswarms, swarms of disembodied bodyparts, or psionic oozes). Consider this book a double thumbs up but not as enthusiasticly as its first.
