How does MoPop define pop culture?
Pop culture shapes how we see the world, driving the ways we express and define ourselves and forging new communities through the power of shared enthusiasm. So why don’t more institutions take it seriously?
Massive: The Power of Pop Culture will explore the impact of global pop culture on our daily lives across 2,400 sq. ft. of exhibition space, offering visitors the tools to ask their own questions as they deep-dive into their role as creators and consumers of modern pop culture. As of lately pop culture, fandom, and science fiction have been occupying a lot of space in my brain. It seems as though Sci-Fi has been making a bit of a comeback. I sometimes perceive Sci-Fi movies and shows as being a bit undermined compared to the horror genre when it comes to film genre popularity. Americans are more likely to line up for the next slasher film right before Halloween, but when are you supposed to get hyped for sci-fi and fantasy? It would be nice if our culture had designated times of the year that were more centered around these genres, it would help with organizing events and such.
What does pop culture mean to you? What does science fiction mean to you?
Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA Exhibit at MoPOP this March @laikastudios @mopopseattle #LAIKAhiddenworlds #MoPOP #LAIKA #StopMotion
I’m heading to Seattle to see the LAIKA Exhibit
I have to say I’m a LAIKA fan. I’ve always been fascinated by how they make stop-motion films, the founder, and story ideas. I always get very excited when they announce a new stop-motion film and know it takes a while because of their meticulous work to create the magic on the screen. I had the opportunity to see a few of the artists at SDCC…
Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume @ Museum of Pop Culture
“In film, television, and theater, costuming is a tremendously powerful tool for storytelling and character development,” said MoPOP Executive Director Alexis Lee. “Disney in particular is a master of the art and sets a standard for using wardrobe as a device for creative expression.”
The exhibit includes costumes from some of Hollywood’s preeminent designers, past and present, including Academy Award winners Colleen Atwood, Sandy Powell, and Tony Walton, as well as Emmy winner Ellen Mirojnick and Emmy nominees Eduardo Castro and Penny Rose.
Visitors will experience “Cinderella’s Workshop,” a gallery featuring the beloved fairy-tale character’s dresses from her numerous Disney incarnations, including 1997’s Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella; 2014’s Into the Woods; the 2015 live-action reimagining of the animated masterpiece Cinderella; and the ABC hit series Once Upon a Time.
The main gallery will be divided into three sections: “Disney Heroes,” “Disney Villains,” and “Spaces Between,” reserved for the antiheroes whose fascinating journeys make them among Disney’s most complex characters. There will also be interactive elements and plenty of chances for photo ops.
On exhibit until April 2022 at the Museum of Pop Culture
