r-t headcanons, please?

- Everyone knows his voice as the one for the intercom announcements for Starr Park. Like, “the park will be closing in ten minutes!” among other things, such as the tour guide recordings and help kiosk text-to-speech.

- When he’s bored he likes to watch park drama unfold like a soap opera (brawlywood movies have nothing on whatever the hell Colt has going on in his social life!)

- He rarely leaves the water-tower security HQ. It’s only when he really needs to (aka when Larry and Lawrie are unavailable for whatever reason).

- When he does, it’s almost never when he’s in one piece. That way if someone takes him out, he doesn’t die completely (basically i hc that if one part of him dies and the other doesn’t, he can still function, unlike in game where if u kill one side then both die. Thats more of a game balance thing imo)

- Despite seeing and knowing everything about everyone, and being put in probably the safest position for most of the day out of *every* brawler, he’s still paranoid as hell. Thats the reason he does all this. He can technically quit whenever he wants to, but a.) he has nowhere else to go, and b.) he’s made entirely for this and nothing else. I think paranoia is built into his mainframe, and that keeps him from considering the fact that he and the park really don’t have to spy on the park’s residents as much as they do.

- R-T is actually kinda scary in hindsight. He knows everything about everyone, and no one really knows what happens with that info— not even Larry and Lawrie. On the surface it’s for the sake of “law and order” of course, but who’s to really say?

[Side tangent: I know theres a popular HC/theory in the fandom that R-T is the overarching “big bad” of starr park/brawl stars. Personally, I don’t think he is; if there really is a mastermind behind bs i doubt they’d put themselves in the park as a brawler. Also, even tho R-T’s super morally gray (probably moreso than the rest of the cast) i feel like it’s more interesting for him to be, at most, a pawn for something greater.]

- Okay, the big one: I think he’s Rik. Well, half of him is. The gems absorbed Rik into the bottom tape-recorder part of him, while the top part is completely a inanimate CRT screen that came to life (yknow, like “i have no mouth and i must scream” or… the movie of that one Tom Cardy song…)

Rik himself isn’t fully conscious and doesn’t have full control over all of R-T, but every now and then he might have some influence over his personality.

(I have a random halloween/horror fic in mind abt R-T and this in particular, so stay tuned and pray i actually get it written lmfao)

for those unaware, this is a really, really good time loop fic. Twilight is trapped in a cycle dying over and over again until he can save the day. This fic had me GENUINELY screaming into my pillow after chapter five (if you know you know)

First song is over and over by Rio Romeo! This song is, imo, the quintessential time loop song. Rio Romeo is such a talented artist, and their songs are just so goddamn sad, their voice control is insane tho

second is Absence, Aldo by Rio Romeo. This song is about someone who knows they’ll disappear, and is telling their lover to prepare in their mind. Yeah…it’s Loid coded to me lol. Idk how to describe the song atm but it’s a good song.

next up is she’s a witch from the Madoka magica movie soundtrack. I won’t be too liberal with spoilers (for an anime that came out 14 years ago…) but this song and the next one took place at the same time in the anime and movie version. This one took the place of the original in the revamped movies edition. The reason I chose so much Madoka magica soundtrack songs is because Piracytheorist herself works as a music teacher, and named chapter titles after music…thingies. Idk man it’s 4 AM what do you expect. But yeah, I feel like Yuki Kajiura’s masterpiece of a soundtrack was fitting. Also, for those who do know the truth in Madoka magica’s narrative, it’s more fitting than it appears (cough cough catholic lesbian cough cough)

fourth is decretum, Aldo from madomagi, though this one was from the anime version. It’s genuinely so heartbreaking, and even moreso when you know the context haha ….hahahahahaha.

fifth is remember my name by mitski! Very good song, fits Twilight’s vives so much.

sixth is My time (omori ver). I haven’t played omori but I love this song (fun fact: my favorite vocaloid artist covered this version of this song like two years back) this song is complete and utter madness, but it’s really good, though there is like 1 minute of instrumental at th end lol

Seventh is Nux Walpurgis from…Madoka magica soundtrack (LISTEN IT FITS OKAY?) this song is literally the final battle theme against a giant ass thing called walpurgisnacht, and I feel like it would fit the final battle in this fic.

eighth is Summer of ‘42 by Hagood Hardy. I’ll be Frank…i have no idea about the context of this one. It might be a film score, because the artist was (is? Probably was) a film scorer (?) idk it’s in my favorite instrumental songs playlist for writing angst (which decretum is also in lol) so uhhh yeah…

28.) What is one thing you would like to see explored more in TMNT art/fics?

APRIL O'NEIL.

So often April just gets completely sidelined—or, if she is involved, it's to a much lesser extent than the main four are. I feel like a lot of people forget that April is, for all intents and purposes—outside of 2012—their sister. She has as much a role in their family dynamic as the guys do.

Let's look at Rise, which is the iteration where she has the biggest role as an active family member IMO. In the final episode alone, she's all but verbally confirmed to be a member of the Hamato clan.

For instance, look at the usage of "it's us" here—they are a group. You either take all of them, or you get none of them.

Note the fact that her sequence in the battle against Shredder takes place in the very middle, between Raph and Mikey's sequences. Moreso, think about the way she appears from behind Raph's copy. It's a move that's VERY reminiscent of what Raph just previously did with Leo hardly 15 seconds prior.

She then has an entire battle sequence against him, which is, by the way, SO sick. This little move she and Karai do is topped only by Leo and Raph's teleport segment.

She's with the entire family (plus Casey, my beloved!!!!!!!) when they launch their final attack on him!!!!

Hell, SHE'S the one who holds the spear with Karai! You know, the guys biological great-great-great however many greats grandmother?

I could talk for HOURS about April's connection with Karai, the guys, and the Hamato clan in general, and its usage of cementing her role as their sister in all but blood—but this is only the first question and I've already rambled for too long HAHAHA.

I want more April! Outside of Rise, inside of Rise, wherever, however, I don't care. Give me more April O'Neil. Stop sidelining her. She is a Hamato, just as much as the guys are.

29.) What is one headcanon that you have?

I see a lot of transfem 2012!Leo passed around, and I genuinely do subscribe to that—but my main headcanon is that 2012!Donnie is also genderqueer (whether that be transfem, nonbinary, or whatever else). Their relationship with April and their whole dynamic takes on an entirely different light when you view it through that lense, and becomes a lot more fascinating than...whatever is going on in canon.

(Sidebar, but Rise!Leo is transmasc. That's not even a headcanon, I fully believe that to be a genuine part of his character.)

30.) What is one common headcanon that you reject?

Not really rejecting, per se, as I believe that any headcanon can be true if you do enough mental gymnastics (#transfem12!donnie WOOOO), but my own take on Rise!Leo's sexuality is a lot more ambiguous than I know a lot of people go for. He's a pretty large kin of mine, and my own sexuality is hardly cut and dry (all I know is that I am queer, and that I don't like putting labels on myself beyond that), so I perceive him kind of in the same boat HAHAHA.

I don't know if this really counts, however, as Rise Leo being queer is hardly a headcanon. That's just...canon. Subtext canon, but canon all the same LMAOOO

Also. Again. That is a trans man. Rise!Leo is transmasculine. I will die on this hill. Argue with the wall.

31.) What is one piece of TMNT canon that you dislike/ignore?

I don't know that I really have any canon that I ignore, to be honest. I think that every TMNT canon is enjoyable in its own way, and that includes the more...let's go with controversial media, like the Bayverse, or Next Mutation,

There are some comics that I just couldn't really get into, but that's more of an ADHD thing than an active dislike.

i've been a (relatively) silent follow for a long time but fully missed all this drama and still don't know the main source, so if I misunderstood I apologise, but from what I understand it's about you disliking the oversexualisation of trans reg in the fandom (which then links directly to jegulus, the most popular ship involving reg). i take it that you don't necessarily dislike jegulus, you just dislike the frequent oversexualisation of trans reg? if i'm right w/ that analysis, then 100% agree with you.

however just to provide a different perspective: as a trans person, i do enjoy the smut fics where trans characters are oversexualised and reduced down to their biology, because that's my personal preference based on what i'm into both irl and fictionally. even so, as someone who does both write and enjoy those stories: those characters still shouldn't be oversexualised (outside of smut fics) the way they so frequently are. the problem imo isn't about jegulus or trans reg smut fics as a whole, it's moreso about the porny 'pocket pussy' characterisation of regulus (and trans sirius sometimes) spilling over into the mainstream plot and character-driven fics.

what can you tell us (without spoiling too much ofc) about toga and dabis interactions in 7tgh? i always think the way you write them is interesting

God I love toga and Dabi. To be honest with you, Toga's character is going through a whole revamp. In the original rp, Toga was written by somebody else who not only really never did anything major with her character but also wrote her like terribly out of character imo. So I took her in the adaption amd I'm doing something entirely different with her bc I wanna so her justice

The majority of Toga's interactions are mostly with Jin in the first part of the series, and she doesn't interact with Dabi a whole lot since Dabi's kinda goin through some stuff and isolating. Dabi interacts mostly with Kurogiri in the first part, actually. but Dabi and Toga have an established dynamic to a degree-- they knew each other precanon prior to joining the league and Dabi kind of looked after her while they were both on the street. Their relationship is a bit codependent and unhealthy though, moreso before joining the league and they'd enable each other's bad habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms (similar dynamic to their relationship in my fic Blood Letting, if you read that one). After joining the league tho she kinda branched out and built attachments to other lov members, while Dabi took the opposite route and kind of distanced themself from her and the rest of the League.

In all honesty, I don't think she was that much of a goody-two-shoes when she was younger. It always seemed to me that what happened to her husband changed everything about her. Her morals, thoughts, ideas etc. She was probably a compelety normal teenage girl.

yeah to be clear if characters make speculative assumptions about each other in my fic that’s not necessarily indicative of what i personally headcanon for them—especially for chameron tbh. the things chase or cameron assume about each other in my fic are almost always slightly off from what i personally think about them as separate characters because they forever have some kind of communication gap going on.

that said . i do hesitate to say that her husband’s death is solely responsible for why cameron is the way she is. one of the first things house says when cameron tells him about her husband in 1x7 is ‘you knew he was dying when you married him’; he accepts his death as an explanation for why she’s so bad at giving patients bad news and why she puts marriage on such a pedestal, but the implication here is that actually the reason why cameron is Like That isn’t as simple as the one-off traumatic event that house has been fishing for. see the episode with the 600lb guy where everyone is popping at her all episode desperate to find out what part of her past makes her want to help this guy so badly because they can’t understand and it turns out there isn’t some dramatic reason at all. ‘you can’t be that good a person and well-adjusted’ house adds—he’s not talking about cameron crying over the centrifuge during this scene, he’s still talking about cameron’s decision to marry her dying husband. she was already holding a lot of the same beliefs as in canon when she met her husband.

i think cameron was probably a bit more normal as a teenager, but not drastically different—if anything, she might have been even more puritan in certain regards than she is in canon (like, fuck tritter, but he has a point when he contrasts her decision to sabotage her own college calculus grade with her honesty vs giving him the run round in s3). as chase and cameron say in 2x7 (hunting) while talking about things the hospital might dig up to prove she caught hiv through her own ‘negligence’ if she tests positive—it isn’t like there’d be anything for them to find. so i think high school cameron probably was a bit of a goody two shoes, but not to the extent chase or foreman imagine her to be; she got top grades, and was probably kind of annoying when they had any class debates about morality, but she was still reasonably social and well-liked, even if it was only because she grew up to be conventionally attractive. imo this is probably where cameron’s whole ‘people don’t take me seriously because i’m beautiful and a woman and a bit of a bitch’ complex starts. this is probably a really boring thing for me to say but my attitude towards emptier backstories like cameron’s—i.e where we don’t know anything about her family, her high school, and all the info is focused on her dead husband—is that if that information were central to who she grows up to be, or if it’d be wildly different to what we as an audience would reasonably infer, we’d have been explicitly told it at some point in canon the way we’re told about *waves hand* everything about chase and foreman’s pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps complex. this isn’t to say that cameron’s childhood/college years aren’t interesting to me—they ARE—but moreso that i think they’re kind of deliberately left empty for a reason, and that whatever i can come up with to ‘fill them’ is usually just what’s intuitive to me.

same goes for her arrest btw like logically you can kind of narrow it down (certain things would disqualify her from becoming a doctor/would lead to serious issues down the line) but honestly for me that one is more fun to just leave up in the air. could totally see shoplifting as the reason! part of me is desperate for it to have been a fight/for cameron to have been busted for underage drinking in her first and last high school party or whatever, but it’s more fun to keep us guessing imo.

so as long as human AUs recreate that dynamic in some way, they can be sooo fun to read. and then you unlock a whole new range of stories for when you get tired of the same/similar End Of The World narrative. it's hard to get it right, especially when writing a completely different medium like twitch chats and discord messages, but soooo rewarding when it lands 😭🙏 thank you again.

just wanted to drop in and say that one of my favourite parts of brutal destiny is the way you write jack and nico as husbands. i am CONSTANTLY thinking about it and how they got to that point

If my memory serves me right I remember you saying Ada would like sweet food (or has a sweet tooth?). But wouldn't it be the opposite? Given most asians don't really like sweet food, preferring them to be less sweeter. I imagine her taking a bite of chocolate cake and immediately giving it to Leon because she's one bite away from gagging. 😂 And I also think she'd be lactose intolerant too (because she's East Asian, and about 70-100 percent are lactose intolerant) so her eating ice cream would be less likely tbh.

so even if she does, i kinda think she wouldn't indulge very often. or would do so very rarely.

IM GONNA BE HONEST (about the lactose intolerance thing)

(i have a lot of very strong opinions about this)

i do think there's a lot of nuance with understanding lactose intolerance in asian people and people in general. i do think it's funny that i am also asian (and also have asian friends that are all not lactose intolerant, myself included) while having several white friends that are ALL severely lactose intolerant.

the other thing is that i think it's kinda weird to place this on an asian character, based on the fact that's it's a possibility for asian people. it doesn't really change much for her story other than she "can't have milk" and im like - that's.. weird lol. to attribute that to her for just being asian. (like it feels like one of those not necessarily racist characteristics, but it feels weird to attach this to her JUST BECAUSE she's asian)

also especially since it's not something that's ALWAYS occuring with asian people. sure, it's a higher percentage. but europeans also have a high chance of being lactose intolerant, along with many other people from different parts of the world.)

this also doesn't include the fact that many asian countries along with the west, that have also developed milks that have less lactose and or are lactose free. so it's entirely possible for someone to be lactose intolerant consume a bunch of dairy products and be fine. (or be like my white friends that are lactose intolerant and just shit their brains out later)

another thing that i think would be weird is to write like - a korean character not sweating or smelling because they might have the gene that makes it so that they don't smell. - like that's fucking weird right? to bring up in a fic?

or the chinese alcohol flush thing, which yes, many people have it (myself included.) but it doesn't seem important enough to write in? or maybe just mention a small flush and then move on??

another thing to note is that i do hc that ada spent most of her life in america or an english speaking country. i don't hc that she was in china for most of her life. mostly because it's not typical for asians in asian countries to remain in asia up until their mid teens and to not retain some sort of accent. since ada has no accent imo (even in the remakes,) i've always hc that she lived longer in an english speaking country.

SO that would also mean her diet was westernized at some point. so she would have probably acclimated to the diet.

i like thinking about these things lol

another thing to note, i think it's more important to write about a character's culture, rather than statistical likelihoods. if i feel like an asian trait doesn't necessarily align with what i hc ada to have, i'm not going to write it. and that's the fun - if you like that, then write it yourself!

when writing stop and smell the roses, which was my first fic to really dabble more with chinese culture and also the language. i focused on things that were moreso in line with traditions and cultures - not just likelihoods of what asian people might have.

i think the only reason why im bringing this up is because it's very easy to box a character into their race when you write this way. and it can easily lead into racial stereotypes when you write in things that aren't necessarily required for a character. if you can work it in a way that doesn't highlight the fact that it's a race thing, then i think that's fine.

but i'm not going to write a character this way - it just seems unnecessary.

Keithfic notes, holidays and celebrations

Richard's birthday is 05. 12. and is the least celebration-like here. it's too close to all the tragedy, so rather than going out I set it in the office at Primavera. Cyrus brought some small gifts and food just as a personal touch and ofc brought Keith along. Keith is so-so on the idea that they should be trying to cheer him up but overall it goes okay... this is the one where I'm most likely to put some interpersonal conflict rather than just inner conflict but I don't want to be all soap opera here. we'll see what comes of it

Christmas dinner at Gabriel's... could be a canon scene so I hope it reads like one. this is unfamiliar to Keith and he moreso feels out of place because they're all talking in English... I think Keith doesn't know English, Cyrus does, and he's the one most likely to engage him back so he doesn't feel like a potted plant while Richard and Gabriel chat away

New Year is the Gregorian one, I'll probably set it in Primavera too but as an actual party... maybe something outside as well. the mood begins to shift here and Keith didn't get the memo, since Richard is channeling his mourning period into something else, he's making plans, building up momentum with hateful energy for the year to come. I might have Keith interact with another character here... maybe Meryl? I really want to write Meryl but didn't have the context before

also around this time I might have Richard hire Keith as a bodyguard officially... I was not sure where to put it since I genuinely don't want to deal with it and having to determine what his duties are on the day to day basis, it's tiring...

Kuma Matsuri is a festival associated with the bear hunting tradition for the Matagi, and I'm unsure when exactly this is set other than "in winter/early spring" (exactly where we are lol) since Keith is not home now he's not actually celebrating this but hey, it's a fic about Keith, absence of something is just as significant. I'd love to go into his memories of growing up and being with his family and learning to hunt how it ties into his current reality. whether he shares his memories with others or not we'll see. I have a lot of Keith introspection here... almost as much as I have people sitting around and eating... exciting?

Coming of Age Day is set in early January but probably won't be appearing in this fic. maybe. because I wrote that Alan and Keith celebrated their belated coming of age together that year after they returned to Japan... Keith's birthday! it's one day after Valentine's, which also won't be featured in this fic but I'll assume that chocolates are a thing already in roseguns Japan. they're catching on... Richard received some and is passing them to Keith as something extra for his birthday. he's not really celebrating his birthday, he didn't tell anyone so Richard just read it off his documents (being his employer) at some point and just wants to make him a meal. this is where I'm ? what a bodyguard does on a daily basis. does he (and Cyrus back in the first arc) follow Richard home and be there? idk... as for a big gift I thought of Richard giving him an apartment somewhere close by. I figure Keith and Alan lived together (?) and that place now is full of memories... I'm not committed to this idea... so I can just have Richard give him a book or something but at least I'd know where Keith lives if I wrote it in myself. any opinions?

Cyrus' birthday! I don't know what they're doing, what I wrote down was dinner in a restaurant and it's the most birthday-like here since it's the most far removed from the tragedy. I like writing Keith and Cyrus interactions... but I can never tell how much speech quirk is enough (Cyrus has a bit of an accent in the translation. and Keith should be speaking in a different dialect too, shouldn't he?)

Spring Equinox Day is observed by visiting the graves of loved ones which is a perfect wrap up for this story, but it has a religious significance, specifically Shinto, and was first established as the national holiday it is today around the time rosguns is set so I'll research more and see if I include it and I very likely will but idk we'll see

I swear there are more scenes that aren't just holidays. but I'm trying to trim it down to the most interesting stuff I guess? I would have a scene or two more with the "springtime" Keith and Richard relationship after they got over all that but I find the miserable pining more fun...

to me Gen is definitely a debate/model UN kid. any extracurricular that allows her to be petty and yell at people she will be there!! she definitely got banned from debate for reducing her competitors to tears so then she joined model un and got banned for threatening nuclear war. of course she was let back onto both clubs because she’s just that valuable but rest assured she’s always on probation. spelling bee reigning champ of New Jersey as well, made it to nationals in middle school and got into a fistfight over British spelling bc she hates that damn extra ‘u’ that they put in words🙏 she’s deffo tai’s little prodigy if mel is van’s mini me

not quite as nerdy and moreso vibey but akilah was absolutely the kid that created potions out of shit she found in the woods (mel was the kid that consumed said potions at the advising of gen) and built a fairy house in her yard. her yard definitely had those cute mismatched stepping stones and wind chimes and painted rocks in the garden. she totally collected rocks and pressed flowers in this big book that basically became her bible. took botany courses at the local community college and joined Wiskayok’s gardening society and those members got her into knitting and book clubs and all that cutesy grandma shit. geocaching first launched in 2000 (go figure) but akilah would’ve been all over that shit if it was around in the 90s

i would be. because the truth is that an abuser can care, and i think douma does to a certain degree. it probably contributes to his utter sense of possessiveness towards the reader. though i didn't touch on it in that snippet, he is very much possessive towards them. his being emotionless and also having witnessed the fucked up shit that he did as a child would def affect how he would treat a child of his own (e.g., the reader). so to a certain degree he DOES care but it's in his own little messed up way. douma is evil but not evil for the sake of being evil imo (he genuinely believes he is preserving his followers' joy by eating them). he's moreso evil just because he can be and does not feel what others do. like. he's not evil because he likes it. he's evil because he Does Not and physically Can Not Care. his brain is literally wired differently. dude can't feel anything and he KNOWSSSS it's weird and abnormal. he's so fascinating actually. Anyways i think i got quite off topic from your question LMFAOOOO but the simple, tl;dr answer is yes!!

Honestly? Absolutely not. Treating the ATLA fandom as one entity here is a bit of a misnomer here imo. When talking to @phoebester, I mentioned that I kinda feel like I'm more a part of the Zutara fandom rather than the general ATLA fandom- !nd that's for good reason! Zutara fans are inherently more critical because we like something that deviates from canon, and I find that the ATLA fandom are large much more closely matches the disposition of casual watchers, who maybe watch the show once and never think on it further- which is also a valid way to interact with media, it's just not my way, especially with media I find lacking in some way. ATLA is great overall, but it has some glaring flaws -some of which are more controversial than others- and I feel that only fans would really bother to ruminate on those in the way I find a lot of Zutarians do. I'm certain some Kataangers or fans of other ships also have issues with canon, but I feel that no one moreso than Zutara has such beef with it.

So if the question is simply about the fandom at large? No, that's unfeasible, a whole fandom can't write a cohesive story when it already has such huge disagreements about where canon ended up... But I gather that's not what you really meant, anyway. I have read fanfics that feel like they genuinely fixed a lot of the bad writing decisions of the show, but there are also many that made it very clear to me that not everyone necessarily understands/are capable of recognizing the core issues behind them, which makes it difficult to fix them. I've read fics retelling the whole story of the show that change one core thing, but fail to recognize that it would then mean that events don't happen in exactly the same way (Zuko joins early and Aang not being the Avatar are frequent offenders here). So like? At the end of the day, it once again comes to individual writers and their ability to write this story in a competent and engaging way- ATLA had good writers on board, which is why it succeeded despite Bryke being shit ones. I definitely believe that there are writers in the fandom that could've done a better job than Bryke, but like... At its core, the issue with them is about control and entitlement- they don't care about being the ones to put forth solid writing, and it shows. Quite frankly, under Bryke's supervision, no one could've made a better show than what we got, and as tragic as it is... Without them there would be no show, so this is all kind of a moot point in the end, unfortunately.

Also, to me "a better show" would've meant Aang getting completely rehauled, removed, or changed to a villain, and that's a bit of an extreme position because I know that plenty of people do enjoy at the very least season 1 and 2 Aang, but like... Yeah that's just not something I can vibe with anymore unfortunately, even if I tolerable him lol. I also believe in Azula redemption and that Aang should've killed Ozai, both of which are yet again controversial issues, so like.. What to me would be the perfect, most sensible version of show would really not jive with others, which is why a lot of different fics exist!

OH MY GOD I HATE ships with Person A going after Person B without taking no for an answer. Person B's agency isn’t being taken into consideration and it’s like they’re a prize for Person A.

Granted there are ships with that trope I do like, but it’s moreso b/c of the other good stuff in the ship and it outweighs the bad.

Like Kl*roline, there’s literally nothing about that ship I can say that I like except for the fact that the actors are pretty and I liked the paper scene (and even then, Caroline was shamelessly giggling with Klaus while her boyfriend was watching. Her boyfriend who Klaus killed, forced to become a hybrid, and made him into his slave).
