ๅฎๆน่ธ Song Moxiong Sewing Construction
(not really a tutorial bc I don't go over how to hem/seam stuff together but close enough)
Yesterday @dragonaeve asked about the pattern for the triangle pleat moxiong in the server so I thought I'd just post it in here too lol, it's dead easy to make (coming from the clothing designer who can barely actually sew)
Some data from ่ฑๅฑฑๅข for your viewing pleasure:

Here, off Twitter but data has been corroborated with at least 3 other sources, shown is ่ฑๅฝขๆต่ฑ็ด็ตนๆน่ธ, the last one in the table. This one doesn't have a chest band but a lot of people prefer having it these days bc of friction and also wear & tear purposes so I added it
onto the making
Step One: Make Some Wrecked Angles
Cut out 4 rectangles:

1x MAIN BODY: H = however long you want the garment to be (usually 30-60cm), W = your chest circumference * 1.5
1x CHEST BAND: H = chest band width (usually 3-5cm) * 2, L = (chest * 1.5) - (dยน * 2)
2x RIBBONS: H = ribbon width (2-4cm) * 2, L = ribbon length (usually like 50-150cm, kinda whatever)
ยน d is half the difference value in the top/bottom lengths. You can either do a triangle pleat, inverse box pleat, or no pleat. The bigger the d value is the more pronounced the curvature. See next step for d value.
ALSO ADD SEAM ALLOWANCE AND STUFF
Step Two: Choose Your Fighter
Choice 1: No Pleat
d = 0. You don't have to do anything queen sit back n relax
-
Choice 2: ไธ่ง่คถ Triangle Pleat (aka dart)
d = 5cm if you're mimicking the Huashan artifact but most people like to go smaller than that so u can adjust if u want

Fold that shit in half (wrong side out)

2. Sew this line to make this triangle in the corner (w = d, h = 2*d)
3. Unfold it (still wrong side out)

4. Either press the triangle thing to one side or squish it flat.
Tada
-
Choice 3: ๅทฅๅญ่คถ Inverse Box Pleat
d = ~2-5cm ish up to you

Fold that shit in half (wrong side out)

2. Make a W that's d/2 tall

3. Flip it and reverse it

4. Open the book and smush the ears flat
-
Step Three: Make A Sandwich

(You can add interfacing to the chest band first if u want it makes it easier. The ribbons are just tubes)
Obviously hem stuff and sew things together like normal lol otherwise that's it
Optional Toppings:
Make a vertical slit in the chest band at the 1/3 point for the ribbon to pass through when u tie it
If you don't got them Tang Dynasty sized titties, add loops for straps and/or sew straps directly onto the band
Add a lining (literally just another big rectangle that u sew to the main body and then proceed as usual)
Use different fabrics for the band and the body for funsies
Add trim between the band & body for decor
No chest band, sew ribbons directly to main body (more accurate to Huashan moxiong)
Fabric not wide enough for the main body? Sew a bunch of smaller rectangles together to make One Big Wrecked Angle. Make them out of different fabrics if you're feeling adventurous
Use already-made hair ribbons or satin ribbons for ribbons if u don't wanna sew tubes

The breast binding trend that young women are doing now has already been done by young women 100 years ago.
Read this excerpt from this paper about qipao fashion by Adrienne Cox:
The changes in qipao fashion began with the trend of breast binding in the early 1910s. Breast binding became more popular toward the end of the Qing dynasty, especially among young female students, who sought to hide their feminine figures by binding their breasts and wearing the early qipao that was stylistically similar to their male counterpartโs changpao style.
Breast binding provided young women with a slim boyish figure and allowed them to show off a more androgynous body as they began to move into the public sphere, which allowed them to preserve a sense of modesty. By hiding their feminine figures, they were able to enter the public sphere without drawing the attention of the male gaze as sexually promiscuous women. In the late 1910s, the trend of breast binding for political reasons quickly spread around urban China, and by the 1920s women of each province sported their own versions of breast binding devices. In the north near Beijing, the laoshi moxiong or old-style breast cover was popular and bound the breasts tight to the chest. In the south the xinshi moxiong or new-style breast cover was more popular and provided a slightly looser fit. From this trend of breast binding, we can also understand how womenโs outer clothing changed to fit the new style of feminine form, as qipao styles became tighter to conform to the boyish figures.
The general practice of breast binding also points toward womenโs desire to take control of their bodies as they are increasingly visible in the public eye. Women chose to bind their breasts as a way to make their body more suitable to the public eye, which then allowed them to take advantage of education and job opportunities that would bring them directly within the gaze of a society that had functioned by hiding female bodies for centuries. During this time period, who was in control of womenโs bodies was the serious question. The changes in both breast binding and qipao styles provided women the opportunity to enter the public sphere without drawing the criticism of conservatives who felt women should stay within their traditional gender roles at home.
By the early to mid-1920s, another movement was beginning to gain traction that completely changed the way that women would display their bodies in public, as well as how the Nationalist government would respond to womenโs political needs and demands. This movement began as some urban women sought to free their bodies from the constrains of their clothing as well as the constrains of traditional gender norms. These women sought to literally free their bodies from the historical bindings that had deformed womenโs bodies. In this movement, breast binding became closely linked with rhetoric surrounding foot binding, which linked it to the feudal and restrictive past. Feminists across China called this the โnatural curvesโ movement, and it sought to completely eradicate breast binding and focused on womenโs physical health. The movement was later supported by the Nationalist government after 1927, and womenโs health was encouraged for the benefit of the stateโhealthy women could produce healthy childrenโbut the way women dressed and presented their healthy bodies came under attack from the Nationalist government for being too provocative.
When the โnatural curvesโ movement began, the women involved focused primarily on celebrating womenโs โnaturalโ curves and bringing the โnaturalโ female form more fully into the public eye. This would both literally free women from hiding their figures using harmful tactics such as breast binding, as well as figuratively freeing women from the traditional expectations that drove women to hide themselves from men. In the past, women had either been in the home or so overburdened by loose layered clothing that the physical form was ultimately hidden away from sight. The focus of the natural curves movement quickly became the breasts, hips, and legs of women, and womenโs magazines such as Linglong devoted centerspreads and articles to showing off and celebrating the physical health of athletic women. In 1933, the editors of Linglong even published an entire issue dedicated to showing healthy and athletic women. Linglong was largely influenced by the readers, and it wasnโt uncommon for a readerโs letter or personal article to be published in the magazine. This is important to note, because the 1933 sports issue that showed women engaged in sports also included images of healthy young children and mothers holding their babies, which shows that women around China supported the movement for a variety of reasons.
The emphasis on healthy and robust bodies became the forefront of the natural curves movement, and this focus was embodied in the two keywords of the movement, ziran mei and jian mei which mean โnatural beautyโ and โhealthy beauty.โ Under the principles of ziran mei and jian mei, Chinese women began to abandon their xiongyi entirely to show off the full shape of their breasts. Others began to adopt the western style brassieres, which would cover the breasts without pushing them into the chest. Politically active women throughout urban China could decide how they wanted to express their liberation simply by how they chose to present their bodies, and qipao styles were changed once again, this time to show off womenโs full figures. Once again, the qipao was used as a way to show the political stance of the women wearing them.
In the late 1920s the Nationalist government, as well as some conservative civilians supported โnatural breastsโ and fashion that followed not out of a desire to liberate women, but out of concern for their reproductive health and creating a clear divide between genders. A popular magazine called The Womenโs Monthly published an article that openly admonished young women who still bound their breasts, and other womenโs magazines published articles encouraging women to abandon their old binders in favor of the western bra, that would support the breasts without constraining them. Breast binding was said to be a major detriment to a womanโs ability to raise her child, as it was widely accepted that breast binding caused women to be unable to produce milk. These groups linked what was supposed to be a form of female liberation back to the traditional gender roles that many women were trying to escape.
โ
First there's a breast binding trend among young women who want to avoid being sexualized by male peers.
Then there's a feminist rejection of this trend as feminists promote the importance of women's health and fitness.
And finally, conservatives co-opt the feminist rejection and twist it into a promotion of traditional reproductive duties.
All of this happened 100 years ago.
And all of it is happening again today.

If you donโt mind me askin, do own and hafus? If not, do you have any favourites?
Hi! Thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply! (image via)
Yes, I do own a few hanfu. Here's a list of hanfu & hanfu accessories I currently own:
3 quju + 1 matching dachang
1 jiaoling (cross-collar) ruqun set (jiaoling ru + banbi + qun + pibo)
2 duijin (parallel-collar) shanqun sets (duijin shan + moxiong/dudou + qun + pibo)
1 Song dynasty-style set (beizi + shan + moxiong + baidiequn)
1 mamianqun
1 hanyuansu one-piece dress
1 pair of shoes
A few hairpins & a necklace
My favorite is probably the Song dynasty-style set by ไธ้ฅๅฑ
that I got from Nรผwa Hanfu. It has a lovely color palette of lilac, pink, and white, light & ethereal fabrics, and exquisite floral embroidery & pearl accents. Perfect for spring!:
I'm also in love with this gorgeous handmade ronghua hairpin I recently got from ๅฟๅญๆไฝ (seriously, the photos don't do it justice):
I'm looking into getting a bag next, since I realized I don't really have a matching bag to wear with my hanfu. In particular, I've been eyeing this cute embroidered swallow-motif crossbody bag from ็ณ่:
Feel free to share favorite hanfu acquisitions in this post! ^^

We have it all (Hualian adopted daughter fanfic) Chapter 10
Gif by eaion
Disclaimer: This is a work of fanfiction. I only do this for fun.
Premise: Not long after comforting a bullied girl named Meng Ai, Hua Cheng and Xie Lian find themselves adopting her and together they form a family they didn't know they had needed for awhile.
Story/Genre tags: Slice of life-ish (mainly), Family focused, Hua Cheng's houses finally become homes, there may be an overarching story but that's not the focus, Hualian being parents, Fengqing being uncles, Lang Qianqiu falling in love with someone who was raised by the Xianle squad, technically post-canon (though I haven't read the books so if there are some ooc moments please forgive me).

AN: Happy Chinese New Year! I'm two weeks earlier than my Shanyue Festival deadline.
One of the scenes in this chapter is Meng Ai (courtesy name Qing Jinjing) presenting her first original song which is Hong Jue. The voice reference I have for her is this video:
Hong Jue (female cover) by Kan

Imagine a guzheng arrangement of the instead of a piano in this cover. For reference a guzheng arrangement of Hong jue sounds like this:
youtube
Chapter 10
Meng Ai allowed herself to relax as her mother, Chenxi and other female servants help her dress. Tonight was not just the public celebration of the wedding anniversary of her fathers Xie Lian and Hua Cheng but it would also be her first official public appearance. Before then whenever she would accompany any of her parents and guardians out of her home they would be careful to not say her name too much around strangers and would only call her by name when they were fairly certain no one would be eavesdropping. When she was twelve Chenxi - though she still called her mentor Yu Yingtai or Yu-Laoshi out of habit - had suggested that she adapt a courtesy name. Normally for a woman a courtesy name would be given upon marriage but out of concern for her safety, all of her parents agreed to allow her to choose her courtesy name.
"Arranged marriages are for those who wants alliances and need money and resources." Her Baba Lang says when she asked about it one time.
"As you can see I don't lack in either."
"If you had it your way she wouldn't get married at all." Baba Lian says teasingly.
"Give me one example of someone who could give me something that I don't already have or something that I could get on my own. You don't need to be involved little one."
"If you had it your way I'll grow old without experiencing the touch of a lover!"
"If you want physical experience there's always the brothels in my city. I'll even make sure they give you the best and cleanest they have according to your preferences."
"Baba! I want what you and Baba Lian has. How am I supposed to have that if you won't let me have suitors?"
"Xiao Ai if our love story has taught you anything it's that if someone is meant for you they will come no matter how improbable the circumstances are." Baba Lian says with confidence and shares a look of love with Baba Lang.
"But I'm mortal."
"Even then, I fell in love with your Baba when I was still mortal too."
"Our point is it will happen if it is meant to happen."
"Stand up please A-Jing." She returns to the present as her mother helped her put her blue Mamianqun skirt. A matching color to her first Daxiushan robe that she will wear. Her pale pink Moxiong neatly tucked in her skirt complemented by the white Beizi robe that had delicate floral embroidery in the collar. The only thing that didn't belong to her is the white belt which she is borrowing tonight from her mother. Although her mother insists that she isn't using the belt as much anymore.
Then came the silver accessories commissioned by her Babas. Her hair was braided on the upper part on both sides and was tied to a halfbun. Secured by a white ribbon and a silver hair stick that had the design of a butterfly in it's side profile with three white flowers made of mother of pearl and had a tassel that had pearls at the end of each strand. She was still unmarried and therefore was allowed to still have her hair down. She could recall Baba Lang's reluctance on allowing her to have a Ji Li ceremony since it didn't matter to him whether she would be married or not. It took coaxing from Baba Lian with reasons that it wasn't simply based on marriage alone but a coming of age ceremony showing that she has come of age. Everyone keeps telling her to be herself and so she stubbornly went against any fancy complicated bun style that would weigh down heavily on her head. And so they settled on a fancier version of the Liusu Ji that allowed her hair to still be worn down.
Next her long silver tasseled earrings which her Baba Lang gifted to her. She suspects that he himself had specifically designed it for her for they attached to her ears without them needing to be pierced. The part where the stud would have been had a white flower and the tasselled ends had silver butterflies in various lengths. The shortest length was closest to her face and the longest was futhest away.
Finally there was her signature silver butterfly necklace that she always wore ever since she was a little girl. In it was the spiritual power of her adopted fathers to keep her safe from whomever wants her dead.
"One last thing." Her mother says as she places another necklace in addition to her silver butterfly. This new one had a lapis lazuli stone carved in an infinity knot. The chain of this new necklace was longer and was made to sit near her cleavage. Much lower than the collar bone area where her silver butterfly pendant resides.
"This was blessed in the lands where the Buddha first dwelled. Your father sent it here before his arrival so that it will arrive here just in time."
"Has he returned yet? Is he safe?"
"He had just arrived in Panyu's docks. If he finishes his business early he might be able to join us tonight."
Then lastly a light placement of rouge on her cheeks and her lips which enhanced her features instead of hiding it. According to Chenxi and her mother she was still too young to wear heavy makeup. And to both of them, though she personally disagreed, her round face and hooded almond shaped eyes shouldn't be hidden under layers of makeup.
"Now breathe." Chenxi her mentor says as they prepare to depart to the venue. This time not through the dice since she was supposed to be seen.
"No matter what happens tonight, the ones who truly matter will still love you. And there will be many more public performances after this. Do your best and enjoy yourself."
"Thank you Yu-laoshi, have I placed the glamour on my eye correctly?"
"You have. Your left blue eye is now the same golden amber as your right eye."
"Right, right."
"Breathe Jinjing."
"Be yourself A-Jing."
With her mother on her left and Chenxi on her right they help her down and now begins her walk on her own to the venue of the celebration. An area in between the dense part of Ghost City and Qiandeng Temple. Qiandeng Temple was strictly for those close to her Baba Lian and her Baba Lang wanted to keep it that way. Having the public celebration be just outside of it was a sufficient enough compromise.
"Ready for your walk A-Jing?" Yin Yu asks as he waits for her in the entrance of Paradise Manor. As much as she wants to make this walk on her own, she doesn't know the route going to and from the venue. She couldn't help but think that this is Baba Lang's way of making sure she at least has Yin Yu to escort her and deal with any unruly ghosts who might want to cause a ruckus. Her mother and Chenxi will be right behind her should anything happen.
"As ready as I can be, I'm more nervous about my guzheng performance."
"You'll be fine, you've been practicing for several months now. Just enjoy yourself. Do you still have your Tie Chi with you?"
"Yes, thank you Yin Yu." She says with a smile as Yin Yu escorts her from Paradise Manor to the event venue.
______________________________________________________________
"She'll be fine San Lang." Xie Lian says reassuringly as he gently massages Hua Cheng's forearm. The two of them were currently both seated in the place of honor. While his husband was always very liberal and usually gave additional effort whenever it came to celebrating their love, he had spent a lot more this year. Their little girl who was slowly becoming a woman in their eyes wanted to have the chance to finally make a public appearance. Her coming of age ceremony was still among those who were the most trusted to protect her and keep her connection to Fu Dao a secret. Any education involving Fu Dao was to be done on general terms publicly while carefully teaching Meng Ai her heritage in private. This was in addition to teaching her the histories of Xianle, Yong'an, and the current cultures of the reigning kingdoms.
He notices Hua Cheng's eye squint ever so slightly. A subtle sign of his nervousness that goes unnoticed by most beings. Perhaps it was because Hua Cheng couldn't help but feel protective over her when he began noticing the eyes of boys and men looking at her with various levels of interest, from innocent infatuated blushes to lascivious gazes. He couldn't find it in himself to blame his husband for being protective over her. While he was able to prevent him from seeking out her suitors and gravely causing any of them injury, he himself did not stop misfortune from happening to the more malicious and predatory suitors. As long as it was subtle, there was still the deniability of misfortune following him wherever he goes.
"Remind me again why she wants to make her appearance this way?"
"Because we love her and she needs to have her own experiences. We can't keep coddling her forever."
Xie Lian gently leads Hua Cheng's face to his own so that their eyes meet.
"We've given her wings, we should allow her to use them." He says softly but firmly. It wasn't the first time he had to allow a student of his to be their own person. It was painful but a necessary part of letting them grow.
His thoughts briefly returned to his decision on painting himself as the villain who committed the massacre of the gilded banquet. He has no regret in doing what he had done. It had preserved Lang Qianqiu's belief in justice and to rule Yong'an as fairly as he could with both the common people of Yong'an and Xianle spared from another internal conflict that destroyed his kingdom. From what he had heard it was under his reign that Yong'an had it's final era of peace and prosperity before subsequent rulers had lead to Yong'an's eventual demise. It didn't fall from a large civil war, but a gradual decline as common people moved to other areas that were more stable. Those that stayed relied on the leadership of local leaders that have slowly decided to stop paying taxes to Yong'an's royalty. And thus Yong'an was no more after Lang Qianqiu's ascension. Perhaps a part of himself wished that they had a more amicable parting. But he himself knew that the only way for him to thrive without him, is to allow his persona as Fangxin to die and remain dead. It is only when he could no longer rely on him can Lang Qianqiu be the leader and grow into what Yong'an needed.
He wasn't surprised when he learned that he had ascended into the heavens.
As far as he knew this was Hua Cheng's first time raising a child into adulthood. His husband's desire to keep Meng Ai safe and to give her everything she could ever want was obvious even to a blind person. And as much as he doesn't want to, it falls on him to slowly allow Meng Ai more independence as she transitions into womanhood. It also pained him to do so, but he also knew that if they didn't allow her to take her life in her own hands, she would resent them and see them as putting her in a gilded cage.
Hua Cheng gives him a soft nod as he holds his hand that still lay on his cheek.
"I just wish we could continue protecting her the way we've done all these years."
"She'll still have our protection, it's just that this time she could decide what to do with her life." He brings his forehead to touch his as he nuzzles his nose with his. He doesn't need Hua Cheng to say his worries out loud. She'll be fine, and when she needs them all she needs to do is call.
Even when nowadays she has become more reluctant in relying on them.
"Taizi Dianxia, Huachengzhou - the festivities haven't begun yet. You may want to restrain yourselves a bit before I could let you two go." Shi Qingxuan says teasingly as they take a break from socializing among the guests that have begun arriving.
"Since when did I care about what scandalizes others? Gege and I are married and this is still within my territory. If you're so concerned with it go deal with it yourself. Isn't that your job tonight?"
"San Lang it's fine."
"Oh so is that why you made me the host?! This is supposed to celebrate your marriage."
"And you like socializing, so get socializing. Hosting suits you better than Yin Yu anyways lest Qi Ying gets jealous of anyone he talks to." Not far from where they are was Quan Yizhen searching for his master. He has returned to his seat only to stand up thinking he might have seen him in another part of the venue. When it was clear that they were going to be ignored, Shi Qingxuan lets out an exasperated sigh as they go to the next batch of guests.
Just as they were about to move on to another group their path was blocked by Pei Ming.
"Is she here yet?"
"No, and even if she was I'm not letting you talk with her alone."
"Ugh Shi Qingxuan I'm not going to seduce her. I may be a flirt but I don't seduce every woman I meet."
"Can you blame me General Pei?"
"You and I may not be close but even you have to admit that I did a good job in reducing the number of cursed immortals that were threatening her."
"So did we." They both turn to Feng Xin and Mu Qing in their fancier attire. Both of them giving Pei Ming pointed looks.
"Allow me to finally satisfy my curiosity. Unlike you three, neither Tai Hua nor I have met her in person nor have we even seen a portrait or heard her voice. Speaking for myself I'd like to finally meet the girl I helped protect."
"Hmph isn't she a little young for you?"
"Nan Yang I just want to meet her! She's sixteen now isn't she? She could now get married if she wants to."
"I'd be more surprised if she did." Mu Qing says with a judgmental tone as he crosses his arms.
"Fine, fine, I'll behave and be a gentleman. She's not to be flirted with. Shi Qingxuan please inform me when she finally arrives." He departs from them as he makes his way to a group of priestesses who had been gazing at him with interest. From their blue and green robes they are Xiwangmu's priestesses and are here by Xie Lian's invitation or to assist Jing Mei, Xiwangmu's new head priestess.
"Well this is a surprise, normally you would be in your mortal guises when you're meeting Meng - I mean when you're meeting Qing Jinjing. Oh my this is going to take some getting used to." Shi Qingxuan shakes their head in embarrassment as they tap their fan on their head.
"She finally beat us last week in Go. She's earned it."
"About time too. I'm disappointed it took her this long."
"Awe no need to be shy Xuan Zhen. You can say that you wanted to show her your true form a lot earlier."
"Tell her that and I'm not going to visit you anymore."
"Hey! There's no need to be harsh."
"Then keep your mouth shut."
"Speaking of which, where is she?"
"Yin Yu is still escorting her. We've switched duties tonight, I'm the host and he's babysitting."
"Does she know that?"
"You know her Nan Yang, if she didn't know by now then she's either possessed or we have an imposter. Also try to manage your fear of the female form since she's going to be dressed up tonight."
"I - I'm not scared of her!"
"You haven't seen her dressed up. I have, and you're definitely going to run."
"That's because you couldn't help yourself and had to fix any ill fitting robes on her."
"My work speaks for itself. When we see her tonight one of the first things she's going to do is thank me for making the adjustments I made. She's one of the privileged few whom I will do it for. Why don't you watch what else you're going to say before you remove yourself from that very short list."
"I don't know Xuan Zhen, maybe we'll need to make sure she's not too upset if Nan Yang decides to run."
"If that happens I'll just knock him out and tell her that she could now defeat him by simply dressing up."
"Hey! I'm not going to fucking run! This is going to be different!"
"How so?"
"We raised her."
"Yes and?" "I raised her too and I don't run when she's wearing fancy robes."
"I know her, I know what she looks like, I've never fucking refused a hug from her whenever she greets us-"
"Till tonight."
"You don't fucking know that!"
"Well here's your chance. Don't expect an apology from me for knocking you out when you decide to run."
Feng Xin then turns around to the entrance of the venue as Yin Yu, Chenxi, and Jing Mei help Meng Ai enter the venue. Namely Yin Yu was clearing the crowd to make way for Meng Ai to enter. Chenxi on her left and Jing Mei on her right they help her lift the luxurious robes she wears as she makes her appearance. When Chenxi and Jing Mei were satisfied that she could walk on her own, they let go of her robes and watches her as she follows Yin Yu in making her way to Xie Lian and Hua Cheng. As she passes by them Feng Xin notices that he has begun to twitch in discomfort.
"Calm down. Didn't you just say you wouldn't run?"
"That can't be our little girl."
"She is, and you're proving us right - will you stop backing away, she'll notice."
"Fuck you."
"Nice to know she'll be so upset by you running away."
"Will you two behave! She's nervous - look she's slowing down a bit to keep her eyes forward while not tripping. Maybe I should make my way on front and officially start the festivities after she goes settle herself beside them."
"Help me restrain him first - don't worry I'll make this quick. I'll tell her not to dress up next time when you're around."
"No - don't you fucking don't! Punch and I'll punch back."
"General Nan Yang pull yourself together - it's still her. Just imagine her with her daily clothes if it will make you feel better. General Xuan Zhen don't start a commotion unless you two want to be thrown out. Jinjing wants to meet both of you in your true forms and she's always excited to meet both of you. Behave while I host the festivities."
Fortunately for the them Meng Ai was too focused on not tripping to pay attention to any of the whispers that she hears. She focused on taking deep breaths as she made her way on front of her fathers with Yin Yu leading the way. She takes a hopefully subtle sigh of relief as Yin Yu steps towards the side as she steps on front of her fathers.
"Taizi Dianxia, Hua Chengzhou, I present the lady Qing Jinjing."
She takes her cue and makes a formal bow to them as they go down from the platform where they sat. Her guzheng beside her seat located next to Xie Lian made her anxious but she calmed herself down enough to meet them with a smile.
"A-Jing you're finally here!" Hua Cheng says with joy as he embraces her. As far as he was concerned she made her formal bow and her formal walk. The bare arbitrary minimum requirements he would allow her to endure. Meng Ai laughs as he finally releases his hold on her as Xie Lian takes his turn to hug her.
"I'm sorry I took so long fรนqฤซn I was starting to wonder if I might accidentally embarass myself along the way."
"You're here now that's what matters." Xie Lian says as they help her to her seat beside them. The guzheng taunting her ever so slightly.
No, she thought. You are not going to embarrass me tonight! I worked hard on writing that song - your presence is not going to taunt me. She felt more relieved as she finally reached her seat beside her fathers and was slightly tempted to give the guzheng a gentle shove to the side.
"Relax A-Jing." Xie Lian whispers as Shi Qingxuan formally opens the festivities.
"Take a breath." She does and she brings her mind to her breath. After a few rounds she gives him a small smile.
"Thank you lรฌng zลซn." She couldn't help but giggle as Xie Lian shakes his head in response. While she did use a teasing voice, being referred to literally as "Your Majesty" when he has long removed himself from the life of nobility only to be thrusted upon it again as the acting Heavenly Emperor was somewhat jarring coming from his daughter who never cared about his position in the first place. Though coming from her he knows it's mainly to distinguish which father she is formally calling for. Hua Cheng was fรนqฤซn, the more common formal address for one's father, while he was lรฌng zลซn, a less common formal address that the masses adopted from royalty. He wasn't surprised by this development given how many kingdoms have a tendency to rise and fall over the centuries.
"You know we would be fine if you just called us Baba."
"And give myself away? Besides I like the idea that only the most trusted will hear me call you two Baba Lian and Baba Lang."
"It's too formal for family." Hua Cheng rebuts as he gives the signal for food to be served.
"Baba!"
"It's true though."
"Well what am I supposed to call you when you two are in disguise?"
"A-Jing just say we're both cultivators and continue to call us Baba. The most powerful cultivators have stopped aging."
"He does have a point A-Jing."
"Well everyone now knows I'm your daughter, shouldn't that give more reason for a formal address for both of you?"
"In my territory? I don't care. Up in heaven, they may care but I don't."
"In what circumstance will I, a mortal, end up in heaven? And I don't mean ascension."
"I technically can make you a part of my heavenly palace. And you would be part of the Middle Court."
"But that would make me a Junior official. I mean a circumstance wherein I stay mortal."
Xie Lian was spared from answering when Yin Yu gave Meng Ai a signal to prepare for her performance.
"Good luck A-Jing."
She gives him a nervous nod as she takes her time to make herself comfortable. She gives one last glance at her fathers and begins playing on the guzheng.
_____________________________________________________________
"We're late! We're late! Do you think they'll still let us in?"
"They will, just relax." Lang Qianqiu says as he reassures Xiao Mengyou as they arrive just outside the venue.
"Taizi Dianxia, allow me to go ahead and explain why we're late."
"Xiao Mengyou calm down, I'm sure they'll understand that fighting demons is part of the job." More than that, he might have an insight on what else might be going on. He doesn't have proof of it yet, but his instincts told him that the seemingly random outbursts of demonic monsters is somehow connected to the case of the cursed immortals. Perhaps it was just because their sudden appearance in areas where cultivators won't go was intentionally made to keep him distracted. He shakes his head to clear his mind. He'll have to consult his Guoshi on what he has observed. It wouldn't be the first time he thought he was right only to have his whole perspective forcibly shift.
Xiao Mengyou insists and he goes ahead while he takes this chance to be alone with his thoughts. The moon was full, but he could still see the stars as they shone brightly. Among those stars was the infamous star of solitude, the very star that Hua Cheng was born under. And from what he had heard, those born under it would either be extremely misfortunate or extremely lucky. While he was still wary of his Guoshi's husband there was no denying that he loved him and he would do well to stay on his Guoshi's good side to prevent his husband from using his luck against him.
He couldn't help but be a little bit jealous of those who were close to him.
Raising Guzi had given him a new perspective of how much elders could influence the youths. His Guoshi had killed his father on front of him knowing that he would jump into the concluding that he was solely responsible for the massacre during the gilded banquet. He made himself the villain and allowed himself to be staked into a coffin for the peace of Yong'an. He couldn't help but be reminded of Qi Rong's influence on Guzi. No matter how much efforts he took to show Guzi that he deserved more than just basic kindness, Qi Rong's sick view of the world had made Guzi settle for any act that seemed kind. Kindness that he thought Qi Rong gave. Now a young man Guzi had settled into a village not far from one of his temples. He still had issues with accepting acts of actual kindness, finding them too much. Which made it even more important that he was kind to him. Especially when not everyone in the world would be.
At this point he wondered how his Guoshi was still kind to him even after everything he has said? Even if they now worked closely in the heavens as he helped him with his duties as the acting heavenly Emperor, he was still nowhere as close as he was compared to the two Generals whom he has heard had more deep wounds in their history. Whatever he said couldn't compare to what they have done, and yet now they were a lot closer than before. Close enough that even their insults toward Hua Cheng didn't contain malice.
Then why did it seem that there was still a wall between him and his guoshi?
Before he could continue in his reflection he heard the notes of the guzheng play and came an enchanting voice. The woman's voice sang of love, devotion, sacrifice. The song was a tribute to Hua Cheng's love for his beloved. How his love for him transcends the structures of the three realms and nothing could stop him from being his beloved's most devoted believer.
He couldn't help but find himself lost in the world the song painted. And for awhile he simply closed his eyes as he listens to her voice sings of the longing for one's beloved.
When it was over there was a loud applause that followed with cries begging the woman to perform again. Whomever organized this party knew how to choose which performers to select. He wonders if Shi Qingxuan wouldn't mind introducing him to the songstress.
"Taizi Dianxia we can enter now, everyone just wanted to see the performance first before letting anyone in."
"I don't blame them, her voice is beautiful."
"Whomever she is she must be close to them for them to select her to perform tonight."
They enter and meet with the other martial gods before Xie Lian and Hua Cheng gets off from their seats of honor to interact with them. Or rather his Guoshi would talk with them and Hua Cheng just sticks to his side.
"Guoshi, if I may ask may I meet the songstress who had recently performed? Her voice and song moved me even when I was outside of the venue."
"My, my, my, even Tai Hua is enamored with her voice." Pei Ming's laughter was cut-off by Yushi Huang's pointed look.
"Don't tease, I'm sorry Lang Qianqiu but Qing Jinjing just left. Shortly after her performance she received news that her father is injured. She and her mother left immediately." Xie Lian tells him apologetically.
"Oh, has medical-"
"The best healers are with them right now." Hua Cheng says without hesitation. His tone alone told him not to concern himself with this matter but that they were well cared for.
"They're going to be fine your highness." Xie Lian says assuringly.
"You mentioned that you wanted my thoughts on the demonic monsters in your territory?"
"That can wait Guoshi, we're still celebrating your marriage tonight."
"The party has served its purpose. If they want to stay they may help themselves. But we may leave."
They go outside and Hua Cheng tosses his dice in the air and transports them into their meeting room in one of his many houses. Though a part of him couldn't help but be disappointed that he had missed meeting the songstress named Qing Jinjing.
AN:
The amount of research and internal debating that I had to do to determine which Hanfu style Qing Jinjing was going to wear for the opening was at least one week long. I spent my halloween rewatching the donghua (my main aesthetic basis) painfully ignoring the story and my favorite characters and scenes in order to try to discern what the main fashion for women's clothing was. It was fun but also a lot of work. And yes I know they mix and match the styles of different dynasties but from what I could see with my very amateur hanfu eyes; women's fashion seem to be dominantly based on the Song Dynasty style (from what I could guess). There were definitely liberties taken but if you look at the female versions of Wind Master and Earth Master the basic Song Dynasty style of a Moxiong (the "brassiere" that could also be worn as outerwear), tucked inside of a skirt (I'm not sure what kind of skirt the animators based it out of or if it is just artistic liberty to make it pretty and easier to animate - but I don't think it's a Mamianqun skirt since from what I've searched on google Mamianqun skirts even during the Song Dynasty tends to be more voluminous than what the donghua shows, or maybe I just couldn't find pictures of less voluminous Mamianqun skirts in the Song era), secured by a belt or a sash, then worn by a Bei zi robe (a type of casual outer jacket), or in more formal events the outer robe would be a Da Xiu Shan would be worn because of it's larger sleeves. I'm not entirely sure if the Beizi robe would be worn first and then the Daxiushan, but for the Hualian public wedding anniversary party this is the case for Qing Jinjing so that she could take it off after performing.
Some reference pictures for her attire:
Mamianqun skirt:

Website link: https://store.newhanfu.com/mamianqun-hanfu-horse-face-skirt-for-women.html?cgkit_search_word=mamian
I know this is a modernized version but I'm mainly referencing the color of blue-green. This is what I had in mind. This in my opinion is the main star of her outfit (and maybe it's because I'm biased because I really love the Mamianqun skirt - I'm already preparing my arguments to convince my parents that it is to pay tribute to our Chinese heritage. And my mother will predictably tell me to pass the bar exam first.). The Daxiushan robe matches this color.

Ancient Chinese hairstyles (NOTE: not definitive but this is the guide I used the most): https://anyofchina.com/traditional-chinese-female-hairstyles-with-names/
According to this source the Liusu Ji (Tasselled bun) hairstyle is the style frequently used for women in historical or fantasy C-dramas because it allowed them to still show off their long hair. And honestly I am weak for this hairstyle and I am so happy I finally found what it's called.

Currently, writing the next chapter for A Matter of Inconvenience, a task that has led me to research:
History of the nine ranks in ancient China. I'm planning on writing a separate post about it, but the fact that Xie Wei and Jiang Boyou started out fairly similar in official ranking hilariously explains their dynamic. (SOKP also chose to make the 6 ministers of the 1st rank instead of 2nd, but also I learned that Marquises are historically outside of the minister ranking system while Dukes are not. Basically, thank you @circumference-pie for helping me research).
An unusual amount of guzhuang hanfu terms. I'm taking artistic license and assuming that certain outfits in the drama is a heziqun with a belt because one can only write moxiong so many times. (also, looking at Liu Shishi's outfits in A Journey to Love, which is outfitted by the same designer and looks frankly to be an S+ version of SOKP outfits -- this looks like a belt over a heziqun instead of a moxiong tucked into a skirt. IDEK why I'm trying so hard.)
(side note, this is ahistorical but I can see why this silhouette is so popular with costume designers. It's very flattering!)
(side note part 2, I find it hilarious that the clothing of my ancestors were basically wrapped tops because I have yet to find a wrapped blouse that looks flattering on me without revealing 3 inches of cleavage. I would be layering that moxiong underneath my jiaoling.)
A history of crystal and jade in Ancient china. For some reason, I keep thinking that crystals were not a thing. And now I have the sailor moon theme song stuck in my head because I read Jadeite and Nephrite way too many times.
The side effects of benzodiazepine, which TBH seems like the closet thing to Xie Wei's ding hun san. (also, anti-anxiety meds are weird. I was prescribed some by my PCP, and it's like one dose made me too numb and another one made me more anxious. )
So. much. pinning. of. hanfu. I'm living out my 13 year old fanfic author dream of describing outfits in detail.
ETA: this looks much more like a dress with a belt than a top tucked into a skirt (similar as the pic above)

Flip the colored strip of cloth over and sew it to the front
While this is very similar to sewing the high-waisted skirt, the part that is sewn from the outside is different--it is the outside, not the inside. This is because when you wear this, you will flip the top band down, exposing the seam on the inside.
Iron it after you finish sewing.

Because this is my first time making this, I guessed the thickness of the ties, but I think I made the too thin.
I think I would recommend a thickness of 1/2 inch.
Making the ties out of cloth might make it feel too tight when worn for some people, so you can also use a thin elastic as the ties.
For the length, you can see that the sister in the video, when she pulls the ties from the back to the front, the ties still reach the tops of her knees.
Everyone should know how to make this, right? After sewing, flip it inside out.
Iron it after sewing.

This is not necessary, since not all moxiong have embroidery, but I bought embroidery, cut out the lace, and sewed it on.
Also, not all moxiong top band are as thick as I made it; Iโve seen some with thinner upper bands. It depends on what you like.

anonymous asked:
Do you have a collection of Song Dynasty styles, and can you say a bit more about them? PS, you're my favorite aesthetic blog!
Hi, thanks for the question! Iโm honored to be your favorite aesthetic blog :D
Song dynasty styles are characterized by straight, slender, long silhouettes, with narrow sleeves. This was in keeping with the Song peopleโs preference for reserved elegance (compared to, for example, the extravagant fashions of the Tang dynasty).

Song styles for women include ru/่ฅฆ, qun/่ฃ (skirt), beizi/่คๅญ (jacket), banbi/ๅ่ (half-sleeve jacket), Song ku/ๅฎ่ฃค (Song-style trousers), shan/่กซ, ao/่ข, etc. Outfits are accessorized with pibo/ๆซๅธ(long scarf), weichang/ๅด่ฃณ (short outer skirt), and waist ornaments.
The illustration below depicts the characteristic outfits of the Song, Tang, and Ming dynasties. As can be seen on the left, the outfits most representative of the Song dynasty are the ruqun and beizi.
Ruqun (left) & beizi (right):

While the ruqun was commonly worn throughout most of Chinese history, the beizi became really popular during the Song dynasty. The beizi is a parallel-collar jacket with side slits beginning at the armpit or at the waist. It can be different lengths - above the knee, below the knee, or ankle length. The sleeves can be broad or narrow. During the Song, it was common to wear narrow-sleeved beizi overย moxiong/ๆน่ธ (chest undergarment) or ru on top, and skirt or trousers on bottom. Paintings and artifact of Song-style beizi:

Modern Song-style beizi:

The Song dynasty is also unique in that it was common for women to wear trousers (usually with beizi). Song-style trousers:

The simplicity and convenience of Song style have made it a common source of inspiration for hanyuansu (hanfu-inspired fashion).

Additional resources can be found in my Song dynasty tag.
Hope this helps!
