Writer Spotlight: Jamie Beck

Jamie Beck is a photographer residing in Provence, France. Her Tumblr blog, From Me To You, became immensely successful shortly after launching in 2009. Soon after, Jamie, along with her partner Kevin Burg, pioneered the use of Cinemagraphs in creative storytelling for brands. Since then, she has produced marketing and advertising campaigns for companies like Google, Samsung, Netflix, Disney, Microsoft, Nike, Volvo, and MTV, and was included in Adweek Magazine’s “Creative 100” among the industry’s top Visual Artists. In 2022, she released her first book, An American in Provence, which became a NYT Bestseller and Amazon #1 book in multiple categories, and featured in publications such as Vogue, goop, Who What Wear, and Forbes. Flowers of Provence is Jamie’s second book.

Can you tell us about how The Flowers of Provence came to be?

I refer to Provence often as ‘The Garden of Eden’ for her harmonious seasons that bring an ever-changing floral bounty through the landscape. My greatest joy in life is telling her story of flowers through photography so that we may all enjoy them, their beauty, their symbolism, and their contribution to the harmony of this land just a bit longer.

How do your photography and writing work together? Do you write as part of your practice?

I constantly write small notations, which usually occur when I am alone in nature with the intention of creating a photograph or in my studio working alone on a still life. I write as I think in my head, so I have made it a very strict practice that when a thought or idea comes up, I stop and quickly write the text in the notes app on my phone or in a pocket journal I keep with me most of the time. If I don’t stop and write it down at that moment, I find it is gone forever. It is also the same practice for shooting flowers, especially in a place as seasonal as Provence. If I see something, I must capture it right away because it could be gone tomorrow.

You got your start in commercial photography. What’s something you learned in those fields that has served you well in your current creative direction?

I think my understanding of bridging art and commerce came from my commercial photography background. I can make beautiful photographs of flowers all day long, but how to make a living off your art is a completely different skill that I am fortunate enough to have learned by working with so many different creative brands and products in the past.

Do you remember your first photograph?

Absolutely! I was 13 years old. My mother gave me her old Pentax 35mm film camera to play with. When I looked through the viewfinder, it was as if the imaginary world in my head could finally come to life! I gave my best friend a makeover, put her in an evening gown in the backyard of my parents’ house in Texas, and made my first photograph, which I thought was so glamorous! So Vogue!

You situate your photographic work with an introduction that charts the seasons in Provence through flowers. Are there any authors from the fields of nature writing and writing place that inspire you?

I absolutely adore Monty Don! His writing, his shoes, and his ease with nature and flowers—that’s a world in which I want to live. I also love Floret Flowers, especially on social media, as a way to learn the science behind flowers and how to grow them.

How did you decide on the order of the images within The Flowers of Provence?

Something I didn’t anticipate with a book deal is that I would actually be the one doing the layouts! I assumed I would hand over a folder of images, and an art director would decide the order. At first, it was overwhelming to sort through it all because the work is so personal, and I’m so visual. But in the end, it had to be me. It had to be my story and flow to be truly authentic. I tried to move through the seasons and colors of the landscape in a harmonious way that felt a bit magical, just as discovering Provence has felt to me.

How do you practice self-care when juggling work and life commitments alongside the creative process?

The creative process is typically a result that comes out of taking time for self-care. I get some of my best ideas for photographic projects or writing when I am in a bath or shower or go for a long (and restorative) walk in nature. Doing things for myself, such as how I dress or do my hair and makeup, is another form of creative expression that is satisfying.

What’s a place or motif you’d like to photograph that you haven’t had a chance to yet?

I am really interested in discovering more formal gardens in France. I like the idea of garden portraiture, trying to really capture the essence and spirit of places where man and nature intertwine.

Which artists do you return to for inspiration?

I’m absolutely obsessed with Édouard Manet—his color pallet and subject matter.

What are three things you can’t live without as an artist?

My camera, the French light, and flowers, of course.

What’s your favorite flower to photograph, and why?

I love roses. They remind me of my grandmother, who always grew roses and was my first teacher of nature. The perfume of roses and the vast variety of colors, names, and styles all make me totally crazy. I just love them. They simply bring me joy the same way seeing a rainbow in the sky does.

Rockstar AU album covers

I hyperfocused on a tiny detail again, so I drew all the album covers of rockstar Sirius, and also came up with a “backstory” for all. I put the descriptions under the cut, with some more details of this rockstar AU! Beware, long post! (also someone please write this)

Albums (Sirius’ age indicated):

Practically Royal (20): A sharp, system-critical punk album that dived deep into social and political commentary. With its raw energy and defiant tone, the album offered an aggressive critique of authority, consumerism, class and societal norms, aiming to spark discussion and challenge the status quo. This debut album was a huge success, launching Sirius into instant stardom and becoming an important public figure and activist in political and societal discourse. He firsts got arrested for engaging in civil disobedience / demonstrations related to an anti-government movement. He was heavily criticized by both parties because of his rebellious actions and undeniable privilidge of his noble birth.

Stray Dog (22): After his brother died, Sirius released his second, highly personal album that showcased diverse musical influences, blending multiple genres into a complex soundscape. Despite its personal depth, it struggled to find a clear identity and the eclectic style left many fans disappointed. The album was considered a flop financially, which added yet another layer to Sirius’ personal struggles and scandals.*

Orange is the New Black (29): This album contained almost entirely cover songs, a bold move that alienated fans who were hoping for original material. It failed to resonate with listeners who wanted Sirius’ distinct voice and creativity, rather than renditions of already well-known songs. The album was released a little after Sirius had served his prison sentence,* and was very despised by the audience, who referred to it as „only a desperate money-grab”. Sirius got heavily criticized, with many arguing that his time had passed and his music no longer stood the test of time, becoming overly commercial. This album was so disappointing that fans began to rediscover and appreciate his second album more.

Wasted Potential (33): After a long hiatus and a period of public controversies and scandals, Sirius returned with his forth album, which was a huge commercial and critical triumph, marking a powerful comeback. It blended his core sound with fresh ideas, and successfully proved that, despite previous doubts, he still had the musical chops and authenticity that made him a fan favorite in the first place. The album became Platinum in 3 months, and dominated the Charts, the titular song spent 3 consecutive weeks as No. 1 of the Billboards Hot 100. The album was nominated for a Grammy, and won the Brit Awards and multiple categories at the AMAs/VMAs.

Fleurs du Mal (34): In response to criticism of his „less poetic” lyrics, Sirius released an acoustic album based entirely on the works of iconic poets like Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Baudelaire. The album received a mixed reception. On one hand, it introduced Sirius’ work to a new audience, gaining significant praise in academic and literary circles. On the other hand, it alienated the core fanbase, who were more attuned to straightforward rock songs.

Supernova (41): Released unexpectedly after another extended break, this album was a declaration that, despite aging, he still possessed the fire and creativity that made him a rock icon. The album featured multiple heavy hitting rock songs, dramatic ballads, grand and epic anthems, showcasing a renewed energy that surprised his fans and critics alike. It served as both a personal statement and a challenge to the idea that aging musicians lose their edge. The album was well-received for its raw vitality and confidence. It was a commercial success as well, the titular song broke the record of „Wasted Potential” by spending 5 consecutive weeks as No. 1 of the Billboards Hot 100. The album also won a Grammy.

Sirius got in touble with the law multiple times for various reasons:

Reckless Driving and Substance Abuse: speeding, drunk driving, drug or alcohol-related offenses, drug possession and addiction

Vandalism and Violent Behavior: trashing a hotel room and damaging private property (charged by Walburga as Sirius damaged Black family properties), physical violence against paparazzi

(Alleged) Fraud: embezzlement and tax evasion, actually comitted by his (asset) manager, Peter, who fraudulently used Sirius’ wealth and invested using his name in questionable business opportunities, mostly regarding property handling and real estate investments.

Criminal Negligence, Endangerment and Involuntary Manslaughter: A gas leak related explosion happaned at one of the properties that Peter got involved with in Sirius’ name, which unfortunately resulted in the death of 12 people. As Sirius was the landlord/investor, and he already had a criminal record, he had to face criminal charges, including imprisonment as on paper, he was the one recklessly ignoring safety regulations. After his second album flopped financially, and he got very publicly disowned, the rumor of his teorethical money problems sort of solidified the charges. It was later proven that he was not responsible as Peter fraudulently used his name and assets without his knowledge, so Sirius got released after 5 years.

Have you ever been playing dnd and found yourself wishing you could experience the full immersion of mechanics for brewing potions, charting maps, picking locks, or enchanting items that were more than simply chucking a d20 and hoping for the best?

In addition to an expansive combat system that favors player exploration and expression, Tales from the Aether encourages players to explore more facets of the fantasy and adventuring genre. Some fun examples are the Chef’s Tools and Climbing Tools mechanics.

Chef’s Tools

These tools are used to make delicious and nutritious meals that are far superior to simple rations. In order to make a nutritious meal that last the whole adventuring day, you must use at least 4 lbs of food stuff such as meat, vegetables, or roots per individual you wish to feed.

You gain a number of d6s equal to your Nature or Knowledge score. You only need to roll one dice to make a successful meal but can gamble for additional bonuses. If you roll doubles on anything other than 1s, your meal grants an additional bonus. Any effects granted from the meals lasts until your next long rest.

If you roll anything other than a 1, the meal is a success and grants a temporary increase to Hit Point maximum equal to your Nature or Knowledge score.

If you roll a 1, the meal is just an average meal with no additional benefits.

If you roll multiple 2s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Stamina.

If you roll multiple 3s, the meal grants a +5 to Speed.

If you roll multiple 4s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Awareness and Security checks.

If you roll multiple 5s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Diplomacy, Deception, Intimidation, and Performance checks.

If you roll multiple 6s, the meal grants double the increase to Hit Points.

Climbing Tools

Climbing long distances is a dangerous sport and can be nearly impossible without the proper tools. With these tools, a misstep may lead to a minor panic attack, not a fall to one’s death.

You gain a pool of 5 dice (1d4). For every 100 feet you climb, you must use these dice to reach a DC of 10. If you fail to meet this DC, you gain 10 points of Stress but make the distance.

The dice you get to roll is increased depending on your Skill Rank. Novice grants a 1d6, Apprentice a 1d8, Journeyman a 1d10, Expert a 1d12, and Master a 1d20.

If you are climbing with multiple people, you can share your dice to help your companions out. For example, if one member of the group is an Expert and passed the DC with 2 dice, they can share their last 3 dice with members of the group that are less skilled in Agility or Strength.

How much does a rental cost? I know the whole rental thing isn’t all for money, but renting a person has to cost something.

Uhh. Okay, let's do some math together (sorry for all my non-americans, I'm doing my math in US dollars)

Acquiring a subject is a one time cost, but it does require several Watchers, drugs and transportation. Depending on where the subject is sourced from, gas is probably the biggest cost there. Let's say about 25 bucks.

While in the labs between rentals there are upkeep costs. That's food/water, shelter (like beds and clothes), hygiene and also any medication they're on. If we assume the Watchers buy food in bulk, we can estimate about 2 bucks a day. Shelter is a one time purchase, about 50 bucks if we consider multiple outfits (because hygiene) and bedding like mattress and sheets. Hygiene includes plumbing, soap, and feminine hygiene products for the AFAB subjects, which is probably like 15 bucks a month? (I think most of those expenses will go to feminine hygiene products tbh lol)

So far we have a monthly cost of 75 bucks (2x30 for food/water and 15 for hygiene), plus another 75 bucks for their acquisition and other one time purchases.

Let's say they get rented once a month? 100 bucks per rental should cover all those "upkeep fees"

Transportation to and from rental locations will vary based on distance, but it'll basically just be whatever the local gas prices are + fees for subjects that are known to resist transportation or try to escape (these fees cover things like sedatives and restraints). Let's assume 50 bucks for transportation to someplace nearby.

So upkeep + transportation is about 150 bucks. The Watchers will want some profit as well. In sales the profit ratio is typically 1/4th (or somewhere between 60-80%) of the price, so if we increase the total cost to 200 bucks that should cover everything necessary plus 50 dollars profit.

Also there will probably be an increase or decrease in price depending on things like species, physical state (injured? Permanent healed scars? Or are they perfectly pristine, no injuries?) and mental state (prone to escaping? Attacking? Anxiety or unresponsive?) Oh and subjects who are specially trained for certain things (like Gem and her corset training) would also have another fee.

Here, have a chart. That's probably easiest to see the exact prices

Base price:

Human (more fragile than hybrids, but easily replaceable): $300

Hybrids (more dangerous if they fight back, harder to replace specific types of hybrids): $400

Avians (easiest to break because of hollow bones. Risk in transportation considering their ability to fly): $500

Starborne (about as fragile as humans. high risk if they die during transportation): $600

Blazeborn (very dangerous, high risk in transportation, requires sedation, very hard to replace): $800

Fae (hard to kill, very sturdy, have long lifespans): $200

Angels/Demons (same as fae but they have higher demand): $400

Physical condition modifiers:

Pristine: 1.0x

Modified (piercings, tattoos, or whatever the heck Doc has going on): 0.9x

Minor injury: 0.8x

Major injury: 0.6x

Minor scars: 0.9x

Major scars: 0.7x

Mental state modifiers:

Stable and cheerful: 1.2x

Stable and apathetic: 1.0x

Prone to running: 0.8x

Prone to attacking: 0.6x

Prone to anxiety: 0.9x

Unresponsive: 0.5x

Optional features and fees:

Permission to inflict minor injury (bruises, scrapes, anything that doesn't scar): 1.3x

Permission to inflict major injury (broken bones and anything that leaves a permanent mark like scars, includes tattoos): 1.7x

Permission to fornicate (fee triples for virgin subjects): $30 per hour

Dog trained fee (aka, the Rendog fee): $100

Long distance transportation fee (for transportation longer than an hour, does not include gas fee): $20 per additional hour

Yeah! That's my mathematics! Uh, it might be wrong. I'm an English major so I can't do math, but I did run a business as a teenager so I do know a little about profits and prices.

So to recap let's do an example!

Let's say you want to rent, uh... (Spins a wheel) Impulse! That's a demon, so he has a base price of $400. He has major scars and is generally cheerful so the equation should look like:

400 x 0.7 x 1.2 = $336

So you could rent Impulse for a day for $336 yay!!!

In which I do some coloring

Discovering that numbers have patterns and relationships is absurdly exciting to me. If someone had told me this at any time in my childhood, I might not have feared and hated math so much.

So I printed this 1-100 number chart I found online and colored it. Numbers 2-9 are each assigned a color, in rainbow-esque order (pink, red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, indigo, violet). Each square has a stripe representing each color it is a multiple of/can be evenly divided by. When I ran out of stripes, I finished filling in the square with the final stripe to indicate "that's as far as this number goes."

Is it useful? idk. Was it fun? Very much so.

Numbers are friends. Friends have relationships. Now I know who not to seat next to each other at my (imaginary) wedding. Whee.

i made a fakemon design prompter, and immediately rolled a single-type, no evolution, no special features normal type pokemon

so to kick it off and try to make myself feel better about rolling Basic Bitch(tm) right off the bat, here's Impossumble (based off of Australian possums n not oppossums dont @ me)

I've written the prompt generator steps below, in case it's not clear on your screens/for screenreaders. If you use the prompt generator, please tag me in it! I'd love to see what you come up with

#1 Special Features - d20

1-10 = Nil, go to #2 11-14 = Gender Variants, go to #2 15-18 = Starter Trio, go to #3 19 = Single evo/form legendary, go to #3 20 = Double evo/form legendary. Roll d2 or flip a coin to determine. 1/heads = multiple evolution, 2/tails = multiple forms.

#2 Evolutions - d8

1-3 = no evolutions 4-5 = 1 evolution 6-7 = 2 evolutions 8 = diverging evolutions. Roll additional d4 to determine how evolutions split. On a 1, pokemon splits at first evolution(i.e. snorunt, wurmple, etc). On a 2, pokemon has an unbalanced evolution tree (i.e. Salandit, which only evolves if female, or Applin, which can evolve into three different forms, but only Dipplin evolves a second time). On a 3, pokemon evolves twice, with the split occurring on the third form (i.e. Ralts > Kirlia > Gardevoir OR Gallade). On a 4, pokemon evolves once, but with many variants (i.e. eevee). Roll a d6 to determine number of variants (minimum 3).

#3 Types - d100

Flip a coin/roll a d2 to determine single or dual typing (heads/1 = single type, tails/2 = dual types). For diverging evolutions with dual typing, primary type should usually be the same as the first evolution, however secondary type should be rolled separately for each diverged evolution. For diverging type pokemon with single typing, feel free to roll for each evolution.

Normal = 1-15 Fire = 16-20 Water = 21-25 Grass = 26-30 Electric = 31-35 Ice = 36-40 Fighting = 41-45 Poison = 46-50 Ground = 51-55 * Flying = 56-60 Psychic = 61-65 Bug = 66-70 Rock = 71-75 Ghost = 76-80 Dark = 81-85 Steel = 86-90 Fairy = 91-95 Dragon = 96-100 Pokemon frequently gain additional types as they evolve, so if you roll dual typing, feel free to apply secondary type to evolutions only! * Notes on flying types, the vast vast majority are dual types. If rolling a single type pokemon and landing on flying, roll a d20. On a 1-8, give the pokemon a Normal secondary type. On a 9-18, roll again on the type chart (rerolling if getting flying or normal). On a 19-20, give pure flying type, congrats!!

If you're still stuck for ideas on where to go from here, try using a random animal generator or object generator for additional inspiration!!

For example: In my birth chart Venus is the closest planet to my Sun, they're not conjuncting but they're at 1 sign apart from eachother. That makes Venus the closest planet to my Sun...now it's your turn to find yours 🥰

❀ -> Asteroid Nike [307] shows victory/something you'll accomplish in your chart

Example:

Nike in the 10th house = good job/career

Nike in the 8th house = transformation about yourself

Nike in the 2nd house = your finances/money. Usually Nike in the 2nd house can indicate being wealthy

Nike in the 7th house = relationships/marriage
