Febuwhump Alt. Day 17: Body Swap

“It’s still hurting, Leo! All this time it must have been killing you and you never said nothing about it!”

Raph’s double negative in Leo’s unaccented voice was as jarring as the tremors through his scarred shoulder. His borrowed face, typically trained into stoicism, was openly pained.

“M’fine. I didn’t wanna worry any of ya after I’d already gotten used to it.” He hadn’t mastered Raph’s tone yet either, the calm dismissal he’d intended emerging curtly indifferent.

Without his own gruff mask to keep up, Raph’s naked concern—his despair at that response was like a kick in the teeth.

Ivan nearly fell out of bed, just barely catching himself with one arm as his body jolted awake. He let out a mumbled curse, slowly and carefully moving to lay on his back again.

He stared up at the water stained ceiling, only illuminated by the jagged orange of the streetlight outside. Somewhere in the distance, he could hear a garbage truck running.

Ivan knew what this felt like. He still felt the heavy metal bands on his arms, could still hear the automated voices and feel the needle pricking his—

No. It’s not real. It wasn’t real. I’m at home, everything is fine.

Well, nothing is fine. But I’m not in the lab anymore.

His heart was pounding so hard against his chest, it started to hurt. He tried to breathe evenly, like he’d read about—but it was never easy.

Ivan eventually sat up, pushing his hair back. He felt sweaty, clammy, overheated and overloaded. He hated waking up like this. He ran his hands over his arms, alternating a few times…no wounds, no marks, nothing…

He ran his hands over his scalp now, feeling every inch of it. He whispered to himself, curling up and settling on his side.

“He didn’t put a chip in my brain. I can control myself. I’m controlling myself. It was just a dream.”

He wanted so badly to believe his own words. He wanted to sleep, to feel like he could. He wanted—

God, Ivan wanted his mother.

He pressed his face into his arm for a moment, allowing himself a few seconds of crying silently before he tried to pull the tears back again. Sleep, he needed sleep.

Before he resolved to sleep, nearly to spite himself, he briefly opened his eyes and spotted the gold ring on his nightstand. Looking at it gave him the softest hint of safety, the faintest hint of the security he’d lost.

As he drifted back off to sleep, Ivan wondered when this would get easier.

Shadows of Struggle

In the dimly lit tunnels beneath New York City, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, known for their bravery and agility, faced an unprecedented challenge. Michelangelo, usually the heart and soul of the team, was struck down during a skirmish with the Foot Clan. His brothers, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael, carried him back to their sewer lair, where fear and uncertainty hung heavy in the air.

Mikey lay unconscious on the makeshift bed, his usually vibrant orange mask now stained with dirt and blood. Donatello, the team's tech genius, hovered over him, scanning with his equipment. "He's stable, but his injuries are severe," Donnie muttered, his voice strained with worry.

Leo, the leader, clenched his fists, his blue eyes reflecting a mix of determination and fear. "We should have been more careful. I should have protected him."

Raphael, the hotheaded yet fiercely loyal brother, paced back and forth. "It ain't your fault, Leo. We all knew the risks."

Hours turned into days as Mikey remained unconscious. Each passing moment felt like an eternity as the turtles grappled with their own guilt and helplessness. April O'Neil, their trusted ally, brought supplies and offered what comfort she could. But even her optimism waned as Mikey showed no signs of waking.

In his dreams, Mikey wandered through a dark labyrinth, chased by shadowy figures that whispered doubts and fears. "You're not strong enough," they hissed, their voices echoing in the emptiness.

But Mikey wasn't alone. Splinter, their wise and fatherly mentor, appeared amidst the darkness. "Michelangelo, my son," he said in his calm, reassuring voice. "Strength comes not just from your fists, but from your spirit."

Mikey wanted to believe those words, but the pain in his body and the weight of his brothers' worries felt overwhelming.

Back in the lair, Donnie continued his research, desperate for any breakthrough. His exhaustion was palpable, his usually steady hands shaking as he adjusted the medical equipment.

Raph, unable to sit still any longer, stormed out into the night, needing the release of physical exertion to quell the storm raging inside him.

Leo remained by Mikey's side, whispering words of encouragement, silently willing his brother to wake up and fill the lair with his infectious laughter once more.

Then, one quiet evening, a flicker of movement from Mikey's eyelids caught Leo's attention. "Guys! He's waking up!" Leo shouted, his voice filled with relief.

Donnie rushed over, adjusting his glasses. "Mikey, can you hear me?"

Mikey blinked, his gaze unfocused at first. Slowly, recognition dawned in his eyes. "Hey dudes," he croaked, his voice hoarse but filled with warmth.

Relief washed over the brothers as they gathered around Mikey's bed, each expressing their joy in their own way. April beamed from the sidelines, her eyes misty with tears of happiness.

As Mikey recovered, the bond between the brothers grew stronger. They faced many battles together, but none had shaken them quite like this brush with losing one of their own. They knew now, more than ever, that their strength lay not just in their ninja skills, but in their unwavering loyalty and love for each other.

And so, beneath the bustling streets of New York City, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stood united, ready to face whatever challenges the shadows of the city might bring.

Women in Whumpable Work

So, relevant to the topic of this whump post, I imagine there might be a few readers whose experience of women in security professions comes entirely from media. If that's the case, you might suppose that this is an entirely male occupation. There are a few reasons for this representation here in 2024, and I am going to tell you what I think they are. I'm not an academic, my degrees are from 2004 and in Biology and Chemistry and I work in an art/tech profession; this is just an opinion from a blogger in a small fic genre.

So with that disclaimer, I think an important, and probably the main reason, is that security guards in media are usually there to demonstrate the seriousness of a threat by getting hurt. Sometimes we don't even see them alive, just as bloody shreds or as decorations for a monster lair. In the case of my whump writing, they're there to get knocked out and dragged behind a pillar by a thief dressed like a ninja.

Sometimes that's a patronizing and antiquated "women can't be guards" thing, but I don't think it's just that. For one thing, my own dear sibling was working as a night guard when she was in college 20 years ago. Women in security are perhaps more likely to be sturdy butches than femmes, and movies mostly hate butches if they recognize that they exist, but even boomers should by this point have encountered women as cops, construction, security, and other hazardous professions.

I think part of it is that the way to increasing gender parity, there seems to be a stage where women can't be shown to be hurt or fail because they've always been shown ONLY failing. ONLY as victims. Women therefore have to be badass girlbosses who can barely be stalled by an obstacle before their glorious victory (and queer people have to be virtuous martyrs to compensate for old portrayals as gross perverts, but that's another topic). Maybe eventually we can get to an Amanda Waller or an entire female cast of Dungeon Meshi, but those aren't the majority examples in American pop culture right now. That's still at the Marvels in a lot of cases, where rep has to be good and powerful to be valid and female villains tend to also be of a very specific type who has snapped from trauma (also a topic for another day).

So, obviously that concept doesn't go well with the entire genre of whump, where we demonstrate that we like characters by hurting them, either as an end in itself or so that they can be cared for. I get that. I'm very uncomfortable seeing female whumpees in certain subgenres, especially the ones that hew closest to real life. But the thing is, I'm also a woman, kind of. At least, that's where I started from, and I'll probably never be out as fluid or agender to anyone irl but one sibling. And I want to see rep of all kinds for all genders, not just the women as badass winners or the men as victims and everyone else as simply absent. That means that sometimes I'm also going to write women as soldiers getting shot and peasants getting attacked by vampires and security guards getting tranked. I'm going to write enbies as villains, as chronically ill, as afab or amab. I don't see this as a problem. I see it as wanting to write more characters.

Obviously I'm not telling anyone to not write men if they like men and this is their fetish. I'm aroace irl, and I feel only a mild preference toward any given gender visually, so I don't exactly have a genetically engineered laboratory mutant in that fight. I'm just saying, consider why you pick your whumpees and how while you decide what's fun for you.

I’m partial to some Wing Whump. Winged humanoid creatures (Angels, Demons, Monsters, Mutants, whatever) being subjected to horrible pain, fear and torture revolving around one of the most precious and sensitive parts of their body.  I love the idea that the wings are a very intimate part of the whumpee, something that they care for and protect. They know what kind of damage could be done to their wings, and how it could leave them so easily broken and disabled, and so they only share access to their wings with those they trust the most. Only certain people can see them, touch them, care for them. Having your wings forced into existence and subjected to cruelty is one of the worst things that you could ever live through. You  may end up losing your wings altogether, essentially losing who you are as a being. Or you could retain them, but they are so damaged that there is no chance of healing them, leaving the Whumpee with nightmares, shame, Chronic pain. PTSD is always an option. I’ve seen so many stories. But there was only 1 that I read where they Whumpee, after suffering for so long, finally regains their autonomy, regains their power and their confidence, and gets their revenge for the damage done, and it was written beautifully!

The vast majority of what I like is fandom-based, but I can recommend some things!

The fanfic Break Him by Prince_Ash_28 is a recently completed story and one of the most intense whump fics I’ve ever read. It’s an impressive 133K words, and features the character Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail. It also has a satisfying recovery arc.

Kegare by Zillasafe is a MP100 fic, very intense and sad, also with an eventual recovery arc. Currently incomplete. Heads up though: the whumpee is a child.

To Light a Fire by IcyPanther: an ATLA fic where Zuko is brought back to his father, disowned, and sold into slavery. Also features a recovery arc.

The Redemption Line by BabyCharmander: Robot whump! A Portal fic where Wheatley is brought back to Aperture Science and tortured by GLaDOS.

Showtime by ElAurianBarkeep: a 16K word fic where Phoenix Wright has a very bad time. NSFWhump, so definitely close to the whumpiest a whump fic can get, but might be too much for some. Mind the tags. Also spoils some key stuff about the third game. NO RECOVERY ARC. This one is ALL hurt.

Cloak and Dagger by RoachIsJudgingYou: A Witcher (primarily TV) fic. Geralt gets captured and tortured while Jaskier works on recovering from an injury so he can go on a rescue mission. I, personally, always enjoy reading about strong, seemingly unflappable characters slowly being broken down.

White Wolf (he’s not a wolf) by Archenfane: Almost more angsty than whumpy but it’s one of few stories that’s made me at least teary-eyed so it goes on the list. Another Witcher fic where Geralt was subjected to extra mutations, is ostracized, hurt, and mocked at every turn, and has internalized this. The story focuses on uncovering the depth of his trauma and terrible self-perception, and Jaskier helping him recover.

Like Father Like Son by eternalglitch: a Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where Leonardo is basically forced to become a villain through an ai-powered shock collar that pretty much acts like mind control without the mind control. The story is incomplete and currently in the recovery arc, but the recovery is going poorly. Extremely angsty and whumpy, basically over 100K words of extreme mental distress, pain, and hopelessness.

left my rights at the door by SimpSupreme: a DSMP fic that I really need to reread, because there’s a sequel in progress that I’m far behind on. At its core, it is an obedience curse story focused on character!Technoblade. Honestly quite similar to Like Father Like Son in terms of the themes of mental anguish and hopelessness. It’s rough.

the inner mechanism of a black box by Bee_4: more psychological whump than physical, but I would still categorize it as whump. Another DSMP c!Technoblade-centric fic, this time focused on the horror of being trapped in a prison that amounts to little more than, well, a black box.

Alien Life Form by telm_393: An easily digestible 5500 words with a recovery-focused sequel, this fic probably did a lot for getting me into whump long before I actually learned the word “whump”. A 2012 Avengers fic where Thor is captured and experimented on before the rest of the team can rescue him.

Anyway, this is just a small portion of the whump fics I have saved. Hope this helps!

There are many kinds of whumpees because every one's personality is different, but some of the community's general favorites are:

Stoic Whumpee, who may be more reserved and internalize or suppress their emotions

Defiant Whumpee, who holds onto their anger, spite and snark to stay strong

Soft/Cinnamon Roll Whumpee, sweet, kindhearted, possibly naïve, a contrast to the cruelty they endure

Comic Relief Whumpee, the one who uses lightheartedness and humor to hide the pain

Pet Whumpee, treated like they're meant to owned, made to act like they're beneath others

Nonhuman Whumpee, who could be anything from a mercreature to an angel to an alien to a mutant to a robot, etc.

Magic/Superpowered Whumpee, who may be exploited and exhausted for their special abilities

Tiny Whumpee, who, true to the name, is smol and typically has a tol counterpart caretaker or whumper

Broken Whumpee, who has given in, given up, who feels hopeless, unsure if they have the strength to survive

Caretaker-Turned-Whumpee: the usual helper and healer ends up needing someone else's aid

Whumper-Turned-Whumpee: the usual bringer of pain ends up getting a taste of their own bitter medicine

A whumper with 4 arms. A bug/spider hybrid perhaps, or a mutant, they're an absolute powerhouse.

Imagine them slamming whumpee into a wall, winding them and swiftly gripping their neck with their dominant arms.

Whumpee thrashes and makes a pitiful attempt to pry off the hands with an iron grip, panic rising as their airflow is cut. After landing a hit or two on whumpers face, they find their wrists being clamped and restrained by whumpers other 2 arms, completely at their mercy.

Imagine whumper sneaking up on whumpee from behind, a dominant arm wrapped around their neck in a chokehold, with the bottom two arms pulling whumpee by the waist to their chest, securing them in place until they go limp in their arms.

The absolute manhandling power whumper has when they have more then 2 arms! 😏
