One thing I truly adore about Palia is the polyamory and general queerness. It's so nice that we can romance everyone so we don't miss any plots or items, but also its nice as a poly-queer person to see some representation in a game.

There is no jealousy. There is no hateful or painful breakups (as I understand it, if you break-up it is not mentioned and you restart the romance plot-line). No one makes negative comments about two pins or switching out pins.

It's so nice to see positive rep in a game and honestly such a breath of fresh air.

welp. i've reached that point in my hyperfixation (/special interest) where i've gone "hm...oc story based on it?? oc story?? fun idea??" so here i am.

in other words: oc story based off of Fnaf and Another short story i wrote for my creative writing class last semester.

silly summary? basically "local polyamorous middle school lesbians (who have such complicated relationships to their genders that technically either yaoi or yuri could explain what's going on with their relationship) are caught up in a web of crime and other bullshit going on in their small town. So many dead people. Including kids." (< summary only applies to Act One)

more serious summary stuff. character edition:

Samantha "Sammie" Kendal: sort of the "main-main" character of Act One. tomboyish, but an actual sweetheart. "pure of heart, dumb of ass" as some would say. transfem, but still more masc-presenting. aroace and queer in general. 11 at start of story. she/he

Jayden "Bunnie" Kingsley: think stereotypical nerdy middle schooler from an 80s sitcom or movie. comes off as pretentious or "smartass-y" to others, but generally doesn't mean it (usually). scared of danger and cautious, comes off as cowardly. viewed as "proper," but that's because people (besides Sammie and Nicky) haven't heard her swear (or see what she gets into with the aforementioned other two kids). really really likes bunnies, and even identifies with them to an extent (in other words, her gender is rabbit/bunnygender and she's a rabbit therian, even if that fact isn't stated explicitly). 10-11 at start of story. lesbian, but deeply closeted (like. Sammie and Nicky are the only people who know). she/it/bun (< latter two will only Really be used by me for obvious reasons, although it/its will be used in dehumanizing ways, but Bunnie will express very minimal negative feelings towards being referred to with such pronouns)

"Nicky Fishers" ([REDACTED] Rivera): very very weird. is viewed as being a cryptid who just kinda showed up in town with their brother (also viewed as being cryptid-esque). doesn't speak much, if at all (nonverbal). brother was their only guardian before he vanished; lies and claims that they live with "relatives" (a lonely woman who claims to be their aunt; no one really questioned it). doesn't like talking about why they and their brother came there by themselves out of nowhere. gives off "weird, gremlin child" vibes. gender is quite literally "whatever is the funniest/most convenient" (although, to be more specific, they're transmasc agender). queer. 11 at start of story. they/he/it/she.

Zachary Simmons: main antagonist, our William Afton of the story. this bitch i swear. basically a slasher villain but Add Mindfuckery (so like. how i write bl!William, basically). loves his son and his daughter that he definitely 100% legally adopted but uh. well y'know. Remember bl!William? like imagine him but Not British. and also like more a technician than a businessman. gay. unlike bl!William, he is cis however 😔. he/him, but probably wouldn't mind they/them too badly. early 30s.

Lewis Mark: the businessman between him and Zach. also his accomplice. why yes they're dating why do you ask. Very Cowardly, helps his (business) partner cover up his crimes out of fear for his own life (one of which was his own goddaughter's, but we'll get there :)). nonbinary, but he has a job so he doesn't really care about that rn. biromantic demisexual. he/it (< Zach uses it/its for him in like. a "dehumanizing him by comparing him to a dog" sort of way. and Lewis is More Into It than he thought he'd be). early-mid 30s.

Jacob Kendal: a technician who works at the pizzeria (currently unnamed). Sammie, Lucky, and Louie's father (the latter two being adopted. and twins). he's basically just Henry Emily but if he weren't the co-founder of Freddy's. family man, loves his kids greatly. very blunt, not scared of speaking his mind Or calling someone a dumbass (where do you think Sammie gets it from). uh...this may or may not have gotten him into trouble with Zach. and by "trouble" i mean The Fucking Guy's Obsessed With Ruining Jacob's Life And Just Generally Causing Him Emotional Distress. like. the guy's just trying to live his life, he just called Zach a Stupid Motherfucker for very valid reasons. pansexual cupioromantic. transmasc. he/him. mid 30s.

Lucky Simmons (Kendal): Jacob's adopted daughter, Louie's twin, and Sammie's younger sister. Very trusting of people. kinda sorta got kidnapped when she was seven. kinda witnessed her brother get murdered, but the murderer was in a costume. got ""adopted"" by Zach in the aftermath of the murder, under the guise of trying to get her to safety. knows her father and older sister are out there, but doesn't know where. semiverbal. 7 at beginning of story. transmasc, but has other problems to deal with before she can fully process that. aroace lesbian. she/he

Mickey Simmons: Zach's daughter. basically just Michael Afton but if you fused him with CC and made her transfem. tries to act tough, but she's. Really Scared. witnessed her dad kill someone and got threatened into keeping quiet. knows that Lucky was kidnapped, but again. Scared. don't have much on her story yet, but. hugging her so gently... 12 at beginning of story. transfem. biromantic aceflux. she/her, doesn't mind it/its.

Helen Peterson: college student. worked as a Prize Counter attendant. genuinely loved and was good at her job! very much a bubbly lady. very Tall and Strong. beloved <3 dated Gabriel. discovered Zach and Lewis were doing some Illegal Shit (fraud of some sort; she wasn't even gonna say anything), and then got beaten to death with a hammer later that evening. currently possesses a pirate parrot animatronic (no name, although i'm Heavily considering making Polly the first name). 21-22 at beginning of story. transfem. bisexual. she/her.

"Gabriel Fishers" ([ALSO REDACTED] Rivera): Nicky's older brother, and their former legal guardian. ran away from home with them several months prior, and changed their last names to avoid detection. made it to town about three months before Shit Went Down. college student. worked as a waiter and did maintenance within the pizzeria's arcade. was...less enthusiastic about his job than Helen. dated Helen <3 we love to see it. walked in on Helen's murder (was looking for her so he could drive her home), and then also got beaten to death with a hammer. currently possesses a clown fox (also unnamed). 22 at the beginning of story. bisexual. transmasc. he/him.

Carmen Anderson: high school student with a heavy belief in the paranormal. heard about the odd occurrences at the pizzeria after the disappearance of Helen and Gabriel, snuck in after hours, and then tried to use a ouija board to contact the spirits. despite their warnings to get out, Carmen did not...and then got strangled from behind. currently possesses a sweets/camping themed bear animatronic (Mallow Graham). 16 at the beginning of story. gay. nonbinary. they/he/she.

Theodore "Teddy" James: middle schooler. absolute sweetheart. very shy. kinda Knew the Main Three. just kinda vibes, tbh. has a crush on Daisy (we'll get to them), but doesn't know how to tell her. also kinda. didn't get a Chance to. got murdered in the arcade one night (with an axe) and now possesses the machines. 11 at beginning of story. nonbinary, but doesn't know. ace and queer. he/they.

Daisy Mark (Richards-Sakurai): Lewis' goddaughter. her parents died in a car accident, and Lewis took her in. kinda quiet and sarcastic, but a lil prankster. witnessed Teddy's death, and also got murdered. also haunts the arcade with Teddy, but is VERY pissed. the vengeful spirit. especially pissed at her godfather for helping to cover up her murder. 12 at beginning of story. demigirl, but doesn't know that term specifically. aroace and pan. she/they.

Louie Kendal: Jacob's adopted son, Lucky's twin, and Sammie's younger brother. this poor kid. name is pronounced "Lew-ey." got murdered, and possesses a plush dog (you know the reference ;)). just...having a bad time. 7 at beginning of story. cis. didn't get to figure out any actual sexuality shit. he/him.

OC fun facts tag~! feat. Blue Horizon.

I rambled at points! Read if curious.

Thank you @anyablackwood for the tag!!! Somehow while I was writing up half these fun facts a few days ago, I got inspired to write more of book 2! I wound up figuring out a lot of long-term plot points, so that was fun.

Rules: "Make a list of fun facts about your OCs. Like a headcanon list, if you will! Except it's actually canon!"

Added the rules late. I wound up doing 15 facts too...but there is some paragraphs in mine, whoops.

As noted prior, as far as I've counted thus far, there are 15 sets of Blue Horizon twin and triplet characters! But from what I remember, there are only 2 sets of triplet characters.

Here's the main triplet babes:

2. There are alien animal people who are very humanoid, including their skin (so like...nekomimi people). Their key capability is transforming into the animal they're linked to! Particularly of focus are the cat people, who can transform into both felis catus and big cats! There are 7 main characters who are either wholly or partially so. 1 is a lion form, 2 are leopard forms, 1 is "bird form," 1 is a jaguar form, 1 is a wolf form, and 1 is a surprise!

(There are two female animal people I stopped focusing on years ago due to changing Blue Horizon a lot... I want to revise so I can bring them back since about 6 are male now.)

3. Noticeably, Blue Horizon's verse has a multi-colored eye system, with 6 that are relevant to the characters--Bright Days, Sad Days comic 4 will reveal further, but each eye color is tied to a psychic power! Unfortunately there are caste-like issues from this--Antonio, who is red-eyed and has the magic of empaths, is in the supposed 'lowest caste' in their modern day, while his identical twin Fernando with golden eyes that can see into the past is in the 'highest.'

4. Mario Herrera, Antonio Chandrani-Rivera's cousin, was originally based on my idea of Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. He's gone through some interesting changes! I created him around 2005 to 2010 (unsure when exactly but pretty early, as I was interested in snarky "rogue" characters back then and considered him one). Since around 2012 he became one of the first trans main characters (he's a trans boy). He had a boyfriend who was originally based on Tybalt, and for a long time Tybalt!BF was just kind of...dry, instead of a troublesome guy, but at some point that boyfriend became too toxic/bitter for my taste, so I wholly revised the boyfriend. Now his boyfriend is uber-cuddly, but I plan to more-carefully add some wilder character arc stuff for them.

5. While I've noticeably shown off the Focal Gen achillean and sapphic love/relationship charts, I recently wrote in further representation--a man named Kamal is demisexual representation, his friend Hamza is aro representation, and a character unrelated to either of them named Eryk is aro-ace representation.

6. While there are technically 3 generations of OCs in Blue Horizon, the "first generation" is from thousands of years ago and a majority of those characters are reborn within the [edit] second and third generation.

7. Nasir, Antonio Chandrani-Rivera's past life, is fantasy-counterpart Blasian.

8. Not quite 'fun,' (I forgot it was supposed to be 'fun' while writing this oops), but my characters are meant to be super flawed. Antonio + Layla + Alejandro have a bucket load of issues, at one point Antonio finds it hilarious Alejandro hasn't managed to land a date, at another point Rayan calls Layla 'sexless,' and many characters fret or obsess over 'propriety' and even call things 'queer' in that old-school (if usually passé) way, though it's majorly over how one of their magic systems (akin to Iron Widow's but different) functions, NOT due to homosexuality or gender themselves.

This is despite my being pretty firmly a nonbinary demisexual lesbian.

It's hugely due to wanting to reflect some of 2000's zeitgeist. Interestingly, their past lives don't reflect certain flawed/messy habits due to their society functioning differently.

9. The ancient generation was once able to travel through space! Their planet was once connected to the rest of the galaxy and part of a large multi-planetary system.

10. I didn't drop the image of it here, but comic 4 will show off how their system once had a Dyson Sphere.

11. The main characters of Blue Horizon are 100,000 years in the future, but their society is obsessed with the ancient Earth, AKA our era. They tend to make up their own ideas of how they think Earth was like, so they'll note things like dial-up internet tone terrifying them, and assume that Europeans are "Roman" no matter the era.

12. Certain OCs now canonically have browner tone to their sclera. It's because this is common for a lot of dark-skinned to brown-skinned people, but due to media being pretty European-idealism-centric, people ignore that it's normal for some amount of people. So just representing that! I don't even notice this in Picrews, so thought to bring it up again.

13. I disliked saying it out loud prior, but Antonio being covered in blood tends to represent his self-sacrificial tendencies around loved ones. There's more to it, but the "fun" is already dying with this.

14. Red-eyed Spectral people heighten the color of their red eyes to fuchsia to understand people and/or the situation around them better. Other Spectrals also heighten their main eye color to something brighter to better understand with their powers.

15. While there is bi representation and WLM-type couples and close pairs, I hyperfocus a lot on MLM and WLW, and since I created Blue Horizon in the 2000's to 2010's, at some point I realized that for me it'd be the bee's knees to do '80's to '90's love triangle media with huge focus on MLM and WLW pairs. So that's what Blue Horizon has a lot of.

HOWEVER... As far as I understand, it doesn't count as a straight-up romantasy. I see it as an epic science fantasy with a ton of romances or implied romances.

A little while ago I said I was changing labels and I'd explain later, when I had more energy. Said time is now, so get ready for a long one.

I'd been rethinking all aspects of my gender and sexuality (except being Agender) the last two months or so. Trying to pin down why exactly I wasn't fully comfortable yet. So I'll just go one by one.

Demiromantic -> Aromantic: A part of my brain insisted that I simply "hadn't met the right person yet" and that was why I'd never felt romantically about anyone. But when I learned about Queer Platonic Relationships everything changed. I realized the one person I thought I had a crush on wasn't a crush at all. Without even knowing about them, a QPR was actually what I wanted with that person. I think also crushes and romance are so widely accepted as "something everyone experiences" that I'd unknowingly assumed I just hadn't had a strong enough connection with anyone yet to develop feelings. I am happy with letting it go so far. I don't think romance is for me.

Demisexual -> Greysexual: I will admit my understanding of sexual attraction was just never very good. Especially pre-surgery, when any sexual arousal or thoughts of being in a sexual situation I felt made me deeply uncomfortable. On top of this I misinterpreted preferring partners that I know personally/friends, or wanting to get to know someone first, as Demisexuality. Despite reading many times that these aren't the same things. Also sometimes I would get really stressed out because I became attracted to a stranger. I feeling pretty good about this change. I think my levels of sexual attraction are just very low compared to an Allosexual, but still there nonetheless.

Lesbian -> Straight: Okay, this is the big one. I had been trying for a long time to make being a lesbian work for me, but I'd been trying for the wrong reasons. Long explanation short, I'm around a lot of Feminist people and gay people. So for a very long time I heard "Women good, men bad." And for the last couple years I was also surrounded by "Gay good, straight bad." And thus my brain said "Well then we can't be masc/male and straight because then no one would like us. Everyone around us likes women and gay people more than anyone else." So I convinced myself that I "had to" be a Nonbinary Lesbian if I was attracted to women. Because Lesbians can be Nonbinary, and Lesbians can be masculine. But I was only trying to fit myself in a box that was the wrong shape for me. It probably didn't help that every person I personally knew under the Nonbinary umbrella was Ace, Aroace, Pan, or Bi. And frequently Nonbinary OCs I saw float by in my feed were always either gay or pan/bi. I think I like not being gay better. My attraction to women/girls feels kinda half MLW and half NBLW, but not in a queer way if that makes sense. It's in the way that this is just how I am.

emrys- cis guy, he/him! …but don’t ask him to think abt his gender too hard bc there might be a little bit of egg-cracking going on that he is not even slightly ready to confront yet :’)

cassia- uses she/he pronouns and is nonbinary! he really enjoys presenting androgynously and getting the confused “ma’am? i mean sir? ma’am??” treatment from strangers

micah- genderqueer and uses they/them pronouns exclusively :] their identity is very important to them and they think a lot abt how they want to present themselves and what to wear every day, doesn’t always understand how people like winnie can be so casual and unconcerned about it haha

winnie- doesn’t think abt gender much at all, would call herself a girl/woman if asked but uses she/they pronouns and wouldn’t be fussed abt it if someone used any other pronouns on her

dove- cis woman, she/her pronouns! she enjoys being hyperfeminine in a cis+ kind of way though, inspired a bit by drag.

emrys- pansexual! it took him forever to admit but he’s cool with it now, finally. as for romance i think he’s panromantic too, he falls for people very easily and it always embarrasses him

yes all of them are to some extent! this group of ocs is actually all in a poly relationship :] it’s not all equal or the same type of love between each of them, they all have different kinds of relationships with every person, if that makes sense? but in my head they’re a closed poly group and generally very happy together :D

yep micah! but like i said they don’t necessarily use that label yet. and cassia is on the ace spectrum, since he’s demisexual :]

yes! micah is the closest, bc i also am bisexual with confusing aromantic leanings haha. as for gender i’m probably most similar to cassia but it’s not an exact match, i’m genderfluid/nonbinary :]

I think more often it's less that they're actively closeted, and more that their social or cultural circumstances mean that they're not fully aware that they're queer.

Madison, by modern terms, would be demisexual- but her story takes place in the 1960s, when even asexuality as a term was just beginning to emerge, so she wouldn't be aware of the term or that there was a label for her.

Nikoletta falls somewhere on the aroace spectrum, but since she's never had a particularly social life (where she'd have the chance to recognize and explore this part of her identity), she doesn't realize this either. She's sex-neutral, and knows she has a very strong emotional connection with Abner, but doesn't really bother with trying to sort out whether that's platonic, romantic, a mix of the two, whatever else. The closest she'd ever come to realizing this is probably hanging around Harley - Harley, being the shameless loudmouth that she is, is talking about a recent hookup of hers, and Nikoletta realizes she's never really been interested in hookups or whirlwind romances or anything like that.

Vivienne, my newest OC, is nonbinary - but since her story takes place in the 1890s, she still uses female pronouns and a feminine presentation because that's what's expected of her. She's comfortable being seen as female, though when she's at sea or in her siren form she takes on a much more neutral form (such as taking on masculine roles like helping to rig the ship, and her running joke with Wojchek about how it's not bad luck for her to be on the ship since she's not a woman). You could say that she's "out" to Wojchek, and eventually a few others, but she doesn't have any particular term for her identity aside from being a siren.

As far as those who are actively aware of their identities and may be closeted...

Jasper is out to most of their close friends and family, but they're careful about their identity in the general public. New Orleans is one of the more accepting places in the South, but it's still the South, and they run into conservative Bible-Belt stuff more than they'd like to. This is also a bit of a learning curve for Kyle - Jasper is his first queer relationship, and he treats it like any other relationship until Jasper reminds him that they have to be a little more careful out in public.

It's a similar story for Kestrel - obviously their identity as a changeling is a metaphor for queerness, with them being "closeted" to a lot of people due to stigma, but they do have to be careful about their genderfluidity itself as well, depending on where it is they're sent to for work.

The others are generally pretty open about their queer identities. That's not to say they don't still run into challenges because of it, but they're out of the closet for better or worse.

Their child, a hybrid couldn't be killed so they gave her to Aziraphale. Aziraphale and Crowley adopted her and named her Kaia (they found things from Iriel and Arith that had the name Kaia on it and assumed that that was what they named her).

shit is complicated.

when i was 12, it seemed obvious that i was straight, but i was drawn to — fixated on, really — learning about the lgbt community. there wasn’t a lot of media available, but my bio father had a copy of boys don’t cry on his bookshelf (he read a lot of true crime). and the internet was starting to happen, so

when i was a young teenager, i started to “pretend” to be queer on the internet. i wrote stories about queer OCs. i spent a lot of time pretending to be a boy, but then 

as an older teenager, i started spending a lot of time in online trans communities, mostly just lurking on lj, and

i started “pretending” to be genderqueer on the internet. asked for gender-neutral pronouns. years of that. but it seemed obvious i was really het and cis, because even though the gender thing was weird and confusing, i never felt quite the amount of pain trans folks talked about irt their assigned gender. these guys were putting so much effort, time, money, into transitioning. i didn’t feel that. 

at 20, i came out as wlw. my mom, supportive and unconditionally loving, asked me at one point, “are you a boy?” i said no, i’m a lesbian. 

at 22, i realized i was still attracted to men. that was confusing, but i live in a very queer-friendly city and was hanging out with a group of radical queers at the time and knew that bi was a real thing. i also spent time with people i knew were trans for the first time in the outernet. i knew nonbinary people in meatspace for the first time. 

at 30, i realized all the sex in my life had been with long term partners or during periods of hypersexual hypomania and was otherwise uninterested in the sex thing. fandom taught me what demisexual meant, but that sounded fake because isn’t everyone like that? then i learned no, not everyone is like that and realized i must be ace. 

at 31 — just in the last couple of weeks — i saw an agender person describing what that means to someone who had no familiarity with nonbinary identities. the same way a couple of conversations with allo friends made me realize that not everyone is actually like me, this led to a montage flashback of moments and feelings throughout my life where i realized not everyone feels like i do about their gender. there are people out there who have feelings about their gender at all, people who spend effort and time and money on their gender presentation (both cis and trans) because it’s important to who they are in one way or another. i’ve never felt that. 

this is a coming out of sorts, for something like the fourth time in my life, as a nonbinary person.

I have two main WIPs at the moment and a couple concepts that I *might* use for nano, but that is very tentative since uni is kicking my whole ass lol. Also please tag me in oc/ask games! I'd love to post more about my WIP but I'm usually not sure what to post

ANYWAY.

Heirs of Starlight

Heirs of Starlight is a fantasy WIP with some elements of technomancy/magic sci-fi thrown in. Expect loads of royalty and political intrigue and a little mystery at the start of the story. The main cast are all queer. The main couples are a straight relationship between bisexuals and a lesbian relationship though. For the fantasy part of it, it revolves around elemental magic, arcane magic, and psychic magic. And the plot is basically a princess trying to figure out who tried to assassinate her father, but she found out a lot more than she bargained for.

Operation Defiance

Operation Defiance is a sci-fi work, through and through. Unlike Heirs of Starlight, it's an IF (interactive fiction), so it's pretty flexible in terms of characters and things like that. The MC can use they/them pronouns and identify as nonbinary, and the romanceable characters are mostly bisexual, with one being demisexual. There may or may not be a poly romance route, I've been thinking about it but I'm not sure how to actually implement it. As for the plot, it's about a non-alignment hacker (MC) who gets recruited by a government organization for a mission to stop a shady government operation
