mini fic rec challenge: sterek edition

yay, thanks for doing the rec challenge, @i-sveikata!!  and effectively reminding me the end of may is somehow now(???) thereby kicking my ass to get my last two recs.  and omg, yes guysss, you know what’s good for not really feeling a fandom anymore?  READING FIC FROM IT.  i know, i’ve blown the whole thing wide open.  *coughs*  anyway, onto the thing here.  the point was to rec more recent fics (2021 and up) since when i do see sterek rec lists, a lot of the time it’s stuff from way back when.  i stuck (almost) entirely to 2023 for mine \o/

always an angel, never a god by piratetattoos.  that post-nogitsune stuff i love, really delves into stiles’ psyche and has derek as the ballast (always a lovely dynamic!)

on first and fierce affirming sight by wearetheluckyones.  a 5+1 fic that is as soft and tender as it’s possible to be while still keeping the boys in character.  brava!

god was a dog-man by spqr.  post-movie fic that has some of my favorite stuff: like good friend scott and emotionally constipated derek ;)

how to court a werewolf by graveltotempo.  that entirely requited unrequited pining that gives me life. <3

i’ll fuck your life up as a blond by piratetattoos.  a fic i picked up right after dylan’s ‘not okay’ look came out, where someone was as obsessed with it as i was (it’s derek).

and a not quite rec? but more of a ‘watch this space’?  i’m a slow reader so i haven’t finished this yet but i’ve started it and am so far very much enjoying!: way down we go by wolfspurr.  also i haven’t read local area man resorts to necromancy as everything is ruined anyway by lunacanislupus_22 yet *AHEM* because i’ve been saving it as a reward for when i actually finish cleaning my place but i am certain it is going to be excellent!

Holiday Cards!

So usually around this time of year, I put up a post offering to send holiday cards with personalized drabbles to whoever wants one. Some of you my have noticed, though, that I never actually got last year’s sent... So with that along with me moving (again! ugh!) in November, I’ve decided to forego a new round of holiday cards :(

Instead, last year’s will definitely for sure absolutely be sent! I promise! Since these cards are a year late, though, I realize that some people may have changed addresses since then. So if you requested a holiday card from me last year and have since moved, please send me your updated address! Tumblr ask or DM is fine, or you can email me at reeby10@gmail.com. There's something weird going on in this town, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.

This is quite possibly my favorite Sterek fic. I freaking love anything where someone not into the know goes into a town with magic and is like huh this is weird but it takes them awhile to figure out what's actually going on. And this is over 100k of that!! I love that Stiles comes into town without knowing anyone except his dad, and his relationships with everyone in this are fantastic. Also, Derek and his backstory are wonderfully heartbreaking. Love this fic so much <3

Dylan was only in Infinite for less than 10 minutes. Of course, he made the most with what little he had. I've seen some reviews and comments saying that the movie would be a bit better if he traded roles with Mark Wahlberg since Mark was a terrible actor and had zero charisma.

I really thought that would be the case. I think Wahlberg is so overrated. He just squints a lot. I'd much rather see an hour and a half of Dylan. Thanks for the heads up.

So I’ve been rewatching Teen Wolf and the first season has reminded me vividly of my dislike of Scott and his treatment of Derek (more specifically the fact that he told him his entire family must’ve done something to deserve being burned to death and pinning the murders on Derek when they were all trapped in the school - like really?? I know u think he’s dead but that was such a low blow, especially after he just got gutted right in front of you bc of a plan you had) and so I was wondering if you knew of any good long Sterek fics where Stiles stands up for Derek and defends him and Derek’s just like “... this tiny defenseless weak human cares about ME?”

Stiles has recently been practicing an incredibly useful little trick kind of akin to a cloaking spell. When he uses it, not even the wolves with their annoyingly nosy super-senses can find him. So far, his experiments with it have not only been informative but also incredibly entertaining.

Because it was more than a little bit satisfying to pop in out of nowhere and give the pack just a little taste of all the near-heart attacks Stiles has suffered over the years from all their dramatic werewolf spontaneous entrances and exits, disappearances and reappearances.

Plus, Scott totally screams like a girl and now Stiles isn’t the only one who knows (appearing from behind the shower curtain right as Scott was about to climb in had accomplished that).

The only person he could never seem to get the jump on was Derek.

Wowzer team, only 2 x Explicit ratings? I obviously didn’t read enough smut this month ;) I’ll work on that for next time. Hope you find some gorgeous gems in this group. Kudos to all the work people do for our wonderful fandom family. Till next time!

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?

Considering at the beginning of January I didn’t think I’d write a goddamn thing or be involved in fandom at all, a helluva lot more haha. This is the most I've written in a single year ever, easy.

What’s your own favorite story of the year?

Where the Real Beasts Are (yep, I’m still banging on about it 😂) because I persevered with it after 4 years of writing and wrote my first 100k+ fic 🤗

The runner-up is Home though. I’m really proud of the plot idea for that fic ^^

Did you take any writing risks this year?

I think signing up for the big bang was a risk, even though I didn’t realise it at the time! I think in my sign up application, I estimated my fic would be in the 20-30k range, but then it grew and grew to 2-3x that length. I realised around the end of June that the daily word count goal I set just wasn’t going to cut it, so I had to double it to 1k a day, and for the month of July, all I did every evening was sit in front of my laptop and slave away. I’m not built for that kind of level of production haha

I ended up getting it finished and self-betaed (a process which took like 10 hours 😂) 30 minutes before it was due to be revealed to everyone on my posting day. It was not a fun time, and I actually kind of grew to resent the fic haha woops~

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?

I’d really like to get my Lonely Stiles fic off the ground. I’ve added another plot thread to it that has turned it into a longfic from the long oneshot I’d planned because there was something missing, so it’s well on it’s way to taking shape. I’d really love to be able to write the whole thing and then post it to a schedule because that’s something I’ve never done before.

I did intend to use it for my big bang piece if I sign up again, but now it’s going to be chaptered, I really don’t want to have to post it all at once per the event rules, so... we’ll see!

Most popular story of the year?

Probably Cloaked in Gold? I’ve never had such a strong reception to a fic before which was especially mind-boggling considering I thought I was just sending it out to die because it had to be posted all in one go.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Home. The reception for the fic even now it's finished has been pretty soft (the Secret Santa fic I posted 3 days ago is already on it’s way to eclipsing it via kudos by the end of the week 😂) On the other hand though, in the 5/6 years I’ve been writing Sterek, I’ve never had such incredible comments as I got on that fic which I still think about even now, AND it inspired someone to draw art so I really have nothing to complain about 🥰💖💖💖

Most fun story to write:

Probably Lemon & Ginger or The Hand-me-down. Generally when I write, I'll always hit a section where I think I just want this bit to be dooooonnnne, but both of these were short and mostly written over the course of a day, so they came to me pretty easily. They just felt right 😊

Biggest Disappointment:

I’d completely forgotten about this, but now I’m laughing remembering when I ‘un-privated’ a fic I hate because people had been asking after it and sharing pdfs anyway, thinking I’d just do it quietly and it would be there for the people that wanted it and I wouldn’t have to think about it ever again, only to discover that it sent out a notification to HUNDREDS of my ao3 subscribers. That was... unfortunate to say the least 🤣 Does that count?

Biggest surprise:

The reception to Cloaked in Gold. I was blown away by the response to it. I keep getting comments on it with regularity even now, even though usually once something's posted, comments dry up after a few days.

What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year?

Phantom (Teen Wolf/Sterek | 13k | E | Complete).

Halfway through his interaction with Stiles, Derek realized his head was throbbing and he was clenching his jaw so tightly his teeth ached. His fangs threatened to drop, and he was still struggling for control after Stiles had disappeared into the sheriff’s office.

Derek didn’t stop struggling even after Stiles walked past his desk ten minutes later, saluted, and left the building. Not until long after his scent had faded.

In which Stiles unknowingly triggers a phantom alpha heat in Derek and then offers to help him through it. Against Derek’s better judgment, he accepts.

As proud as I am to have completed El Lazo, which pushed my writing and editing boundaries and me grow (thanks again betas, u rock), Phantom was a challenge but in a far more fun way. I've never written heat fic before, and while I'm excited to write more A/B/O Sterek fic in (near) future, the concept of this phantom alpha heat existing in a canon divergent world excited me a lot. And I got to have Derek be really tight with both the sheriff and Melissa so all my dreams came true.

Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year?

Yeah! I've got Sterek fics I want to finish, and I'd like to complete a draft of the original novel I'm working on now. I have some other goals floating around like editing/self-publishing a romance novel I've had completed for a while and finding a home for some original short fiction I've written as well.

Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year?

For sure! From an original writing standpoint, I entered more prompt contests than I normally do to push my limits and potentially write in genres that I am NOT COMFY writing. The contests are all run by the same organization, but they do it for different lengths of fiction. You get a specific prompt, compete against other people in your prompt to progress to the next round until a group of people make it to the final prompt and winner is declared.

Story Of Mine Most Under-Appreciated By The Universe, In My Opinion:

In 2021 I don't feel like I have any really, at least not with fics because coming into a fandom so late where there's already a ridiculous amount of delicious content I feel grateful to find any audience at all. For original I'm still really hoping to find one of my very favorite pieces of flash fiction a happy home, I'm like 'hey! someone out there running one of these mags! I'm a nobody but i hope you are touched by this!'

Most Unintentionally Telling Story

I have absolutely no idea about this one. I think every piece a writer writes must have something telling in there about them, so none are standing out more than others.

Biggest Disappointment:

Realizing that the first 25k draft of my novel just was not what I wanted it to be at all. The conventional advice is to push through to the very end and use everything you learned on the second draft, and it's good advice, I've done that advice before, but in this case...I think I need to take what I've written already & my outline and try something else.

Biggest Surprise:

So for those prompt contests I mentioned above, this past month was the first time I came first place in one of the rounds within my group, and the genre was sci-fi so I was like lmao this is gonna be bad probz. But the risk paid off and it was an awesome surprise!

The other big surprise is that Sterek has made me love reading and writing things I had never been all that interested in exploring before, and I'm having a blast.

My Favorite Part Of The Fandom This Year

I have met and am continuing to meet lovely, lovely people! It really hit me this year how the most satisfaction I ever get from fandom/life is from finding kind, open-minded, passionate fellow fans and having that sense of community in a way that feels true to myself.

Without @snarkatthemoon letting me beta her big bang fic and motivating me to write daily I don't think I would have had as much fun writing this year. I love writing, but again I think for me having that community vibe just makes it even more special whether it's fic or original work.

2021 Fic Year In Review

i was tagged by @rhyslahey, @inell, AND @luulapants so i guess i gotta do the thing now alkjdfg 😂

Total number of completed works: 32, which is more than i thought tbh, but it’s mostly been because of the stiles shipping central discord server’s monthly ficlet exchange, soooo thanks for keeping me going when i otherwise had no motivation whatsoever.

Total word count: once i get the ficlet i’m working on now posted, it’ll be about 53k for the year. which.....is decent, i suppose. but i fall into the trap of comparing myself to my previous self, aaaaand it’s by FAR the least i’ve written annually since i started writing fic again after high school. like, almost 1/5 of my most prolific years. trying to remind myself consistently that it’s okay and even good to have periods of rest and lowered productivity, especially under the circumstances. my brain juice will return from the war eventually probably.

Fandoms written in: Teen Wolf and Merlin, which yeah it was kind of nice to foray briefly back into the latter!! hadn’t written for Merlin in a long time.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? my expectations for the year were pretty low, i think, after last year was also an extremely unproductive year and i wasn’t feeling much better about things. so, like, i wish i’d written more, but i’m also glad that i wrote anything cuz that was not guaranteed 😬😭😅

What’s your own favorite story of the year? honestly, none of the ones i’ve written this year stand out to me very much..... scanning through the list and it’s taking me EFFORT to even remember what some of them ARE, adlfkh. i guess if i had to pick one, i might say If We Exiled Our Sins?? i originated a pairing tag, first one to write it, and that’s pretty exciting lol. i think i like that fic a lot.

Did you take any writing risks this year? besides writing that pairing ^? not really, i don’t think. everything was pretty chill, low effort and low engagement, short and easy.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? write more, get my mojo back. try and write something longer than 7k. maybe even a multichap. i miss being able to write long stories 😭

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Things I Learned In The Storm maybe??? an Erica character study thing, which i quite liked but which got very little response.

Most fun story to write:  Love In The Age Of Sustainable Gardening Practices (Steter) was quite fun 😂

Most unintentionally telling story: uuuhhhh, i don’t think i projected much on any of my stories this year?? there wasn’t much substance to most of them, and 95% of them were based on prompts/requests from others, so they weren’t just things i felt compelled to put out there.

Biggest disappointment: i posted a couple of fics that were gifts for people who didn’t respond to them literally at all......so. that was fun. wonder if they read them......

Asking all my favorite authors: Do you get much time to read fics anymore? If so, what are some of your faves from the past year?

Not as much time as I want to have, but there's a few that I read this year that have been well worth the time.

Gallavich: Enemy Lines by J_Q and stars_fall_on, Love Me At Half-Light by @ms-moonlight-inn. Both of which were fully engrossing AUs with great storytelling by the authors.

Sterek: To See With Eyes Unclouded by mikkimouse - all of her stuff is really well written. Grass is Greener Where the Bodies are Buried by @mtlyfe which was a really cute little cracklicious one-shot. Radio Silence series by saintsideways featuring Marine Stiles that really blew me out of the water.

Veronica Mars: Promptober 2021 Fics by @charleylynn (who's writing style is always spot on), a collection of one-shots that take place mostly in AUs.

Animal Kingdom: On Christmas Day by @adventuresofprettyboyandthekid A really cute fluffy 5+1 Christmas themed one-shot.

Ok, I need help.

I remember that Tyler Hoechlin talked about sterek, specifically about what Tyler Posey said about sterek being creepy, and said that we were free to ship his character or create a back story as soon as we keep it respectful (something along the lines). There was a YouTube video but I can't find it.

hey all!  it’s nearly the end of the year now and it’s time to finish the list of my favorite 2020 fics! (you can find part i of this rec here !) I can’t thank these authors and anyone else who published things this year enough. it’s been many long months where a distraction was much needed, and we got such amazing content for FREE. being able to escape into another world for even just a few minutes right now is priceless. 

to everyone who wrote something, read something, or simply made it through this year, kudos to you! wishing everyone a much more relaxing 2021 with even more amazing fics to come. :)  thank you guys for everything – happy holidays & new year, and happy reading!  

there were so many good ones out this year and there’s no way I can include all of them, but I enjoyed so many more than just the ones on this list! the ones I picked just stood out to me for some reason based on how I was feeling or what I was going through at the time, and they all helped me in some way or another. :) not to mention, I am sooo behind on recent fics and most of the blff, so I will be making more recs slowly into the new year as well!

This is a prequel fic to one of my older fics, and I love the Dystopian vibe of it and what I have in mind for this series—this is a time-travel fic wherein Stiles and Derek both travel back in time for the greater good.

I love time-travel fix-it fics, and there can never be enough of them!!

2. Begin Again

(and no, before you ask, the title wasn't inspired by TS, though how I missed that idk. Anais pointed this out to me 😂)

This is set in a vague future, post-canon, wherein Derek finally accepts that he should try to live his life. That maybe he should finally give in to what is brewing between himself and Stiles.

I love the imagery I somehow managed to capture for this fic. And it also makes me immensely happy when Derek heals, moves on. I just want him to he happy 🥺

3. You've Got Living To Do

Just like the previous one, the imagery & symbolisms and Derek on the road to getting better are two things I love about this fic as well.

4. Hold On To Me

Ahh this one!!! Not my best work grammar-wise and writing wise probably, but I loved playing with this AU and the TSC references. This is an one-shot, but this AU lives in my head rent free!!!

A Dragon’s Tale

This is a piece I did for the 2021 Sterek reverse bang run by @sterekreversechallenges. The talented wanderingeyre chose this piece and it’s like she reached in my brain and wrote everything I wanted and more. I can’t stress enough how great the world-building is in this fic, and she squeezed in basically all of my favorite tropes. Michelle was so kind and so much fun to work with. Y’all need to check out this fic, especially if you enjoy fantasy (and honestly even if you don’t, it’s worth it), and show it some love!

Tell Who You Are In The Night by wanderingeyre

He’s tall, as tall as Derek is, but where Derek’s shoulders are wide, this man is lean strength. Stiles rests his cittern against the corner, gives a jaunty wave to the room, and begins walking in Derek’s direction.

Derek stops looking and buries his face in his pint glass, willing the other man to go away.

Stiles hesitates near the empty chair. “Mind if I join you?”

“Yes,” Derek growls and wishes he could flash his red alpha eyes at this stranger to make him leave.

Looking from afar was one thing. Up close, Stiles’s eyes look like whiskey in firelight and he smells like citrus and woodsmoke. Derek’s wolf is going crazy inside him and he pushes down his reaction to this man. There’s something else, something other, but there are plenty of people who have residual magic of shifters in their family. It leaves a trace, but is often indistinct.

Stiles grins, pulls out the chair, and sits down. “Great.”
