PSA: I don’t speak Spanish so I sincerely apologise for any mistakes

"hola! ale?" you called out as you let yourself into your girlfriends apartment, bending down to scoop up nala who came hurtling at you from the sofa. "hola!" you heard the blonde call out from her bedroom as you cooed at the small ball of fluff in your arms and kicked off your shoes, sliding them to sit neatly beside your girlfriends.
you couldn't help but chuckle as you entered the bedroom to see alexia's eyes trained on the large tv on her wall, watching barcelonas last match with real madrid. a notebook and pen sat nestled in her lap, the girl clearly taking notes before their upcoming rival game this weekend.
"nadie puede decir que no estás dedicada bonita." (no one can ever say you are not dedicated) you laughed, placing nala down and shaking your head. "para ser el mejor tienes que saber todo sobre tu oponente. hola hermosa." (to be the best you have to know everything about your opponent. hi beautiful) your girlfriend shrugged, moving her notebook away and opening her arms expectantly.
"y por eso eres la mejor?" (and that is why you are the best?) you laughed, placing your keys and phone down on her desk. "si es por eso que soy la mejor." (yes, that is why i am the best) the catalan grinned as you collapsed on top of her, your arms wrapping around one another in a tight hug.
"No es que me queje al verte. pero pensé que tenías trabajo esta tarde?" (not that i am complaining to see you. but i thought you had jobs this afternoon?) alexia questioned curiously as you moved a few loose strands of hair out of her face.
"a few clients cancelled so it freed up my afternoon." you explained with a happy smile, honestly not all that bothered if it meant you got to spend more time with her.
"veo. bueno, al juego todavía le queda la mitad." (i see. well the game still has one half to go) your girlfriend smiled as you sighed, knowing her well enough that there would be very little you could say to pry her away from her match studies.
"i'm gonna go make some food then." you chuckled, pecking her lips and moving to stand but her arms stayed locked around you. "o podrías quedarte y mirar conmigo mi vida." (or you could stay and watch with me) alexia grinned, wiggling her eyebrows making you laugh.
"haré algo de comida y luego volveré y miraré. okay?" (i will make some food then come back and watch) you bargained, the blonde humming and letting you up. "si, okay."
"and don't forget, we're practicing your english later." you reminded causing the older girl to groan loudly in contempt. "ale! you promised." you warned at her response, the blonde flopping backwards and sighing.
"de repente me siento muy mal bebe. podría perder mi voz." (suddenly i am feeling very sick baby. i might lose my voice) the taller girl faked a cough causing you to narrow your eyes at her in a glare.
"alexia you are the one who asked me to help you be more confident in your english. so that you can speak easier with my family!" you warned her sternly, the midfielder whining like a child throwing a tantrum as she kicked her feet and dragged her hands down her face.
bit by the travel bug you decided to spend a summer interning in barcelona around a year and a half ago, you already knew spanish from studying it in school and so when the opportunity came up from one of your old teachers for a photography internship abroad, you'd have been stupid to say no.
that was how you'd met alexia, a few months in you'd been sent to assist on a shoot for the new fc barcelona kit drop.
you'd caught the older girls eyes right away the moment you'd first spoke, alexia finding endless amusement in the way your thick northern accent came through in your spanish.
so with some light teasing throughout the shoot you were surprised when she'd asked if you wanted to grab dinner afterward, claiming that you'd not had a proper barcelona experience until you'd eaten at some of the best places it had to offer which alexia was glad to show you.
and the rest was a story you'd probably tell your grandkids one day.
"o podrías ayudar a tu familia a mejorar su español?" (or you could help your family work on their spanish) your girlfriend suggested with an innocent smile, which promptly dropped as you only continued to wordlessly glare at her.
"fine!" alexia huffed, throwing her hands up in defeat before crossing them over her chest, pouting up at you. "that's not going to work ale. go back to your game!" you nodded to the tv, turning around and heading toward the kitchen.
~
"cual es tu horario para mañana bonita?" (whats your schedule for tomorrow) your girlfriend asked with a stretch, joining you in the kitchen from her bedroom. "hermosa?" she called out again when you didn't answer.
"in english." you turned to her with a smile, leaning against the counter as you took a bite from your sandwich. "qué?" alexia frowned as you pulled yourself to sit on the counter. "english lessons ale. i will only respond when you speak in english!" you explained with a shrug, continuing to eat your sandwich.
"mierda. uh, what are your....jobs tomorrow?" the older girl managed to get out as you nodded encouragingly. "i have a shoot at two and another at five." you answered, your girlfriends understanding of english was fine as was yours of spanish, but it was her diction that she was often insecure about.
"what time is training tomorrow?" you asked, leaning over to place your empty plate in the sink. "training is at ten." alexia answered with a little more ease and you smiled.
"okay so now lets practice like you're talking with my family." you started, jumping down from the counter and moving to the living room, both you and alexia taking a seat on the sofa.
"how have you been?" "good." "okay, they're going to want to know more than that baby. what about football? speak about that." "okay. we have been training for the..." you watched as the blonde struggled to find the right words, huffing in frustration.
"champions league?" "si. sorry, yes. champions league. barcelona lost last time, we do not want that to happen again so we train hard, we try to win all our games." "good! see, you can do it ale." you nudged the older girl with your foot, sending her a soft smile of encouragement. "you will have to help me with your father." alexia chuckled as you agreed, your dads accent easily the thickest of your families with how fast he spoke alexia often struggled to understand what he was saying.
"your accent when you speak english is very cute baby." you grinned, watching on victoriously as a small blush coated the girls cheeks, a welcome change from her often sharp demeanor.
"ojalá pudiera decir lo mismo de tu nena española." (wish i could say the same about your spanish) the taller girl sent you a smile, hands tugging at your top to pull you closer to her. "hey!" you frowned in offence at the comment as you now sat practically in her lap, her long legs reclined down the sofa.
"should i say in english too?" alexia teased as you smacked her chest with a small pout.
"there are some things you like better when i say in spanish baby girl, no?" alexias tone shifted as her eyes roamed your features with a slightly darker gaze. your face heated up at what you knew she was insinuating, her hands gently sliding up and down your bare thighs.
"...maybe some things sound better in spanish."

— broadway star w/ gojo satoru, sukuna ryomen, choso, toji fushiguro, nanami kento – main masterlist
— warnings: nsft (minors do not interact!), smut, oral, implied fem!reader for nanami
Tumblr media
GOJO SATORU | the cheerleader but in an obnoxious way
during your performances, gojo is the loudest. person. there. it would be sweet if it wasn't so disruptive to the people around him. he doesn't care though. you're his star. how can anyone expect him to stay quiet and not give you the praise you deserve?
if you're in a comedy, you can hear him laughing over the crowd from your place on the stage. if it's a drama, any applause is nearly drowned out by his cheering.
he can't help it. he loves seeing you perform, and he's always just so proud of you. the way he expresses that is being the loudest motherfucker in the audience. he also has some of your lines memorized from when he runs them with you, and he'll mouth along with you and your costars without even realizing it.
when you do run lines, he's such a menace about it. if you get all of them right, he insists that you have to take a break for your reward. said reward is different every time—sometimes he'll massage your shoulders, sometimes he'll insist that you need to wind down with your head in his lap while you watch a shitty sitcom, but most times he ends up buried between your thighs (it's as much of a reward for him as it is for you).
he'll also come to your shows with a big bouquet of flowers that can barely fit with him in his tiny auditorium seat. he shoves them beneath the chair, and when you finally receive them, half of them are crumbled and missing most of their petals. you still love them though, and even the ruined ones are displayed proudly in a vase at home.
Tumblr media
SUKUNA RYOMEN | a nuisance
when you first tell him what you do for a living, he is so annoying about it. he claims that it's a useless profession, and it doesn't add anything to your life other than idle entertainment. it would be hurtful if it had been said by anyone else, but he truly just didn't understand the appeal of live entertainment. or any modern entertainment, for that matter.
(that's not to say that he wouldn't light up anyone who said the same thing. only he's allowed to bully you about your job).
after a few months of dating, you finally convince him to come to one of your shows. lets say its a musical drama (think les mis, wicked, etc.) and he gets to hear you sing. My God. he'll never ever admit it, but he couldn't take his eyes off of you the entire show. he had no idea that you were so talented (mostly because he doesn't understand how prestigious broadway really is).
when you meet him after the show, you're almost giddy when he tells you that you did a good job (though it was half-hearted). he can see your excitement and tries to backtrack before you can accuse him of getting soft, claiming that he still thinks it's was a waste, but you saw him applauding at your curtain call with a small, fond smile on his face. you'd almost forgotten to stand to the side when you costar was called out, too fixated on the rare show of happiness on his face.
"thank you for coming," you whisper that night, head on his chest and hand tracing the tattoos on his shoulder, "i know you didn't want to."
he mutters something, and you lift your head and rest your chin on his chest, "what was that?"
"when's your next show?" he repeats, unable to meet your eyes as a light pink dusts his cheeks.
Tumblr media
CHOSO | the cheerleader but in a sweet way
brings an appropriately sized bouquet and keeps it from getting crushed while he watchs the show.
literally has a lovesick smile on his face the entire time you're on stage, and he does get a little bit loud when it comes time for curtain call. he's just so proud of you, he can't help it.
will not stop telling you how talented you are and how beautiful you looked on stage. he'll ramble about specific parts of your performance, both to show you that he was paying close attention and because he's a closet theater nerd.
he sometimes comes to rehearsals, and you'll come sit with him when you're not in scenes and just lean your head on his shoulder while you both watch your costars perform. you'll lift your head and whisper little fun facts about the show in his ear while you watch. he has a hard time focusing completely on the information with you so close to him, but he does his very best.
will ask for a kiss before you go back on stage. does not care that it's embarrassing and he looks whipped out of his mind. it's because he is whipped out of his mind.
Tumblr media
TOJI FUSHIGURO | old man
literally whips out his ancient flip phone the second you get on stage and starts recording even though you explicitly told him that it wasn't allowed.
nothing will stop him. he'll play dumb if someone tries to rat him out. he claims that he barely knows how to text on this "old piece of junk," much less use the camera.
he loves going back and watching the grainy videos on his itty bitty screen, especially when he's away for work and has to miss a show. even though you're approximately one centimeter long on his screen and it's nothing like the real thing, it always brings a smile to his face.
he also loves practicing lines with you. like gojo, he will get very distracted, but he just ends up turning it into some porn scene, changing the lines into something straight out of a shitty erotic novella.
"something just comes over me sometimes...i'm sorry, madame."
"i can think of a way you can make it up to me."
he's so cringe. you don't try to stop him when he manhandles you to the bed though.
Tumblr media
NANAMI KENTO | the respectful one (kind of)
he also brings you flowers, but he makes sure not to be too noisy as he applauds you and your costars at the end of the show. he doesn't want to disturb the people around him, and he doesn't want to embarrass you.
however, he is so proud of you, and he makes sure you know it. he's also very clingy after your shows, constantly grabbing your hand and whispering that you did amazing in your ear until you get home (i feel like he's not very into pda, so this is as good as it gets).
his favorite part of your broadway career is the characters you play. sometimes you try to stay in character for parts of the day while you're at home as an exercise, and his guilty pleasure is you roleplaying certain characters in the bedroom LMAO.
he was so embarrassed to bring it up the first time, but you were playing roxie in chicago and he was obsessed. he couldn't help but ask that you stay in character while you were on your knees in front of him.
you got to bring home the dress that you wear for the song "roxie" and he literally cannot keep his hands off of you. he asked if you would wear it while he fucked you (which is lowkey the reason you brought it home). you could not walk the next morning.

I actually don’t think it’s true to say Hugo “intended” for Javert to be Romani. I admit my own feelings on this have changed over the years. :( The thing that was the final nail in the coffin to “this was almost certainly not *Hugo’s* original intent” was when I listened to a talk from a person studying race in Les Mis and they addressed Romani Javert specifically. It really feels like the more you study the passages that people pick to support this interpretation, the more the claim this was “definitely Hugo’s intent” seems to hold less water.
To be clear I don’t think Hugo’s intent is the be-all end-all, and that people can reinterpret things, and that reinterpretation is good. I also think people can reasonably disagree on translation/interpretation. but if we’re talking about the original intent….
If you read any other of Hugo’s works, there is never this level of ambiguity when he is trying to indicate a character is Romani. He is especially never this ambiguous when a character is dark-skinned enough to not pass as white. He is explicit. (And he’s racist. Hugo sucked.) Romani characters in other Hugo novels both before and after Les Mis are basically always explicitly said to be Romani, in a way that Javert never ever is.
Even in Les Mis we see a handful a characters who are supposed to be nonwhite, and it’s always very explicit. Hugo was racist and also very unsubtle.
The passage people usually cite as proof Hugo intended Javert to be Romani are two lines in his backstory— one saying that his mother was a fortune teller, the other saying that he’d come to hate “the race of bohemians from which he’d sprung.”
There are two words commonly used for “bohemian” in French. one is usually is used for the race of Romani people and the other usually used as a general adjective. Apparently the term that Hugo uses here is the one that is more commonly used as a general adjective. Saying “this passage is meant to clearly explicitly indicate he is Romani” seems to me like it’s mistranslating it; at best, it seems like you can argue there is possibly some intentional ambiguity.
Later on we also get a description of Cosette that describes her as “the bohemian who walks barefoot,” and the word for bohemian used in that passage is actually the French word that’s more associated with the race. (It’s being used in that context in the racist way people use g*psy as an adjective.) But people are far less likely to interpret dainty innocent Cosette as Romani compared to “violent” “brutal” and “savage” Javert who “hates his own race.”
The “fortune teller” mother could play into bigoted Romani stereotypes— but it could also into bigoted stereotypes about poor/lower class people, which often broadly overlap. Because of racism a lot of the way characters are coded as lower class/being on the fringes of society, and coded as Romani, broadly overlapped.
And “race” is being used in a more general sense here to refer to class, the way Hugo uses it often.
None of the early adaptations of Les Mis go with the Romani Javert interpretation. I can’t find old reviews that mention it. To me this indicates this isn’t what people at the time would’ve gotten out of the story either, especially because Hugo doesn’t seem to have gone on the record about people missing it. And again if you contrast that with other Hugo novels, where reviewers and adaptations DO all get which characters are meant to be read as Romani..:it just doesn’t seem to hold water that this was definitely what an audience was supposed to get from it.
And even if this was Hugo’s intent (and I don’t think it was)….well then it’s a catastrophic failure? Then it’s very Badly Written and shallow and horribly handled?
Because Les Mis is about how people with different kinds of marginalization face very different specific challenges. A character’s gender, class, level of education, criminal record, age, etc etc etc all affect the way that they’re treated and there’s lots of explicit discussion of that constantly.
So if Javert was intended by Hugo to Romani, and especially if he was supposed to be visibly nonwhite— well then it’s a failure of the narrative because Hugo never does any deep research or analysis of how his race would actually affect his life. Even in the very racist and bad novel Notre Dame De Paris/the Hunchback Of Notre Dame, there is explicit discussion of the way being Romani affects the character’s lives and how they’re treated in a way that we never ever ever see with Javert. It’s poorly handled and racist, but it’s there.
But if you want any of that explicit discussion about race to be in Les Mis you have to do the research and add it yourself, because it is just…Not There.
There’s no discussion of Romani culture and Javert’s distance from it, there are no scenes showing the way Javert interacts with other Romani people, there’s no explicit discussion of actual Roma people at all really, and (if Javert’s meant to be read as someone who doesn’t pass as white) theres no discussion of the way being visibly nonwhite would affect his life in such a deeply racist society. literally none of that is there. If Javert is supposed to be Romani there is an utter lack of care paid to how that would actually affect him and the way he’s marginalized, in a way you don’t see with how Hugo handles gender or class.
Again to me it seems like if Hugo intended for Javert to be Explicitly Definitely Roma, we would know; if he intended for him to visibly nonwhite, we would definitely know. It’s not just that the way he codes Javert doesn’t resemble the way he handles Romani characters in other books… it’s also that it doesn’t resemble the level of detail/care he usually pays to Exactly what background each character comes from and Exactly how it affects their lives.
It seems like what fans often do is take Javert’s internalized classism and label that as “internalized racism?” But I feel that while there are similarities because “class” in the 19th century was often treated as something immutable and biological, and classes were often described as a “race”, they’re really not the same thing.
And like, I’m not here to tell people what to do! people can reinterpret things how they want and bring their own takes on the story. Hugo sucked and was shitty and racist. A lot of my favorite Les Mis fanfics are one that take characters Hugo probably intended to be white and reinterpret them as POC, doing research into how that would’ve affected their experiences. But at the same time….
Many other people before me have pointed out that there is a Trend to which characters in which Les Mis tend to be more commonly reinterpreted as POC. There is a reason why “savage” “violent” oppressive cop Javert was played by a black actor on broadway years before we got our first black Valjean.
As someone who used to have this interpretation, I think Javert is a challenging character to attempt to reinterpret as a POC (without massive changes to his characterization) if you’re doing it for “good diverse representation” because he just, sucks so badly. Especially if he’s written as the only POC in the cast, he’s just a mess. He’s described as violent. As beast-like. He’s a bigoted cop. He’s brutal. He’s hideously ugly. He canonically refuses to think because he hates thinking. He hates the “race” (meaning class of poor people) he comes from. Every time we see him he’s compared to a savage animal. And yeah that’s …a lot of baggage! He is a character made entirely of baggage. And adaptations like BBC Les mis show the kind of uncomfortable racism that ends up being brought to the surface when Javert is one of the few main POC in the cast.
But yeah. TL:DR; There is ambiguity in Javert’s initial description, and I see why people have this interpretation. I think people can reasonably disagree on it. But over the years I’ve come down on the side of, it’s a bit misleading to say this is Definitely Clearly Exactly Canonically what Hugo intended and that adaptations/fans are whitewashing him.
To be clear I also think that reinterpreting characters is great and good! And that reinterpreting characters as POC, doing the research that Hugo didn’t, is especially good! but also that Javert in particular is a problematic hornet’s nest of unfortunate implications that kinda have to be managed, and that whether you disagree that this was “Hugo’s intent” or not there’s a massive gap in the story when it comes to discussing race that would sorta need to be filled with outside research.

Society of authors members - a word...
Members of the Society of Authors, we have our annual AGM on November 17th.Usually, only a hundred or so members choose to attend the AGM, but this year is going to be different. This year, we face a well-organized attempt by a relatively small group of members to take over the AGM and push through two resolutions.
The meeting is virtual, so you can attend by Zoom. You can also vote on resolutions by proxy as long as you do so before the 15th.
Before we start, this post is mine, and not an official SOA statement. But –
As members of our union, there are a number of important resolutions for you to look at during this year’s AGM, which will help shape the future of the organization. I urge you to look at them all, and especially at resolutions 6 and 7, submitted by a group headed by some prominent gender critical members.
You’ve probably noticed that this year, there has been a great deal of attention given to our little group by a (mostly hostile) media. Much of it centres on me personally, and much of what they say is typically misleading, incomplete or untrue. Most of it has been driven by social media, where for several years I have been the target of abuse and attacks by gender critical people. I believe that the two following resolutions come as a direct result of this.
Resolution 6 is an attempt to get rid of me as Chair because of my “documented behaviour and comments”, which I take to mean my statements on social media in favour of trans rights, as well as my support of the three writers of colour who received racist abuse in the wake of the Kate Clanchy affair last year.
Resolution 7 includes a demand for a commitment to free speech, which, though it may seem reasonable in principle, in this context shows a basic lack of understanding of what the SOA already does for free speech, and implies that there is bias against certain groups within the organization.
First, let’s have a look at this accusation of bias, which runs through the whole proposal. Some of the people behind these two motions have made it clear that they think that my personal opinions, as tweeted on my personal account, somehow make me unable to exercise impartiality in my capacity as SOA chair.
Okay. Let’s look at my personal opinions. I have a lot of them, and I tweet a lot. I’m a Remainer. I’m left-wing. I’m pro-choice. I wear a mask in public places. I support trans rights. I’m afraid of climate change. I hate racism in all its forms. I really like musical theatre, and (full disclosure) once unfollowed someone on Twitter for saying they hated Les Mis. But the thing I keep being accused of bias over is – you guessed it – trans rights.
If you look at the list of people proposing these motions (and if you take a glance at their Twitter profiles), you’ll find some prominent gender critical voices there. I’m not remotely surprised by this. There’s a history and a context to this attack, dating back several years. If you’d like to know more, here it is. And all this has become part of a right-wing culture wars agenda that sees me as part of “a contamination by the woke”,  as this blog post (one of many) typifies. The way I see it, this targeting of the SOA is part of a wider attempt to force the organization to abandon its impartiality and to pander to the demands of the right wing, via the gender critical movement – demands that, in this case, amount to removing a democratically elected Chair, and effectively giving preferential treatment to people with gender critical beliefs.
I don’t think that having openly pro-trans beliefs is a reason to stand down as Chair. I don’t think that anyone would insist on this if I held any other belief – if I were Jewish, for instance. But having a trans son, and supporting his rights, is enough in the eyes of these people to justify this unfounded claim – a claim that either by expression my opinions, or by not supporting theirs, I have somehow “allowed” gender critical authors to be cancelled or to lose work, because of their gender critical beliefs.
This is utter nonsense. My Twitter is a personal account, like the rest of my social media. I don’t bring my clashes on Twitter into SOA meetings, or expect the SOA to defend me against criticism or abuse. Nor should anyone else: it’s not within the remit of the SOA to supervise social media, or to comment when authors disagree. What the SOA is very good at is resolving contractual complaints. But anyone needing this kind of help needs to ask the SOA for help, not complain on social media that they weren’t offered any. If my car gets a flat tyre, I don’t complain to the management of my local Toyota garage that they didn’t help me – unless I’ve actually been there first. I wouldn’t expect them to look on social media to find out if I needed repairs. Why? Because what I say on Twitter doesn’t concern my local Toyota garage. For a start, they probably don’t follow me on Twitter.  And I wouldn’t expect them to intervene if someone on Twitter complained that I’d left my Toyota blocking their drive, or if someone had left a rude message on the windscreen. Because – guess what? It isn’t their job. They’re a garage, not The Batman.
So, what do I actually do at the SOA? Well, I chair the Management Committee. We deal with finances and strategy, prizes and grants. We help direct policy and, with the help of the SOA staff, determine how best to serve the members. We are not a political party, though we do lobby politicians of all parties on issues that concern our members. We do not debate “what makes a woman” because the SOA has 12,000 members, including trans people and gender critical people, and we want to serve them all. The gender critical lobby has – or so it seems to me – consistently refused to understand this. I have been asked repeatedly to debate with them on Twitter over trans rights. I have been threatened over my refusal to sign a petition that I felt legitimized JK Rowling’s comments on gender. I have received death threats and abuse. I have been told that as Chair of the SOA I must engage with this debate, and then, when I have expressed opinions, have been told by the same people that I shouldn’t have said anything. But here’s the thing. Free speech is for all, even in the case of those with whom you disagree. And a democracy treats people equally, regardless of their status. The gender critical lobby seems also not to understand this. It may have the support of some very powerful and well-connected people, but that doesn’t make their voices any more important than those of our other members. That’s why the SOA remains neutral in disagreements between individuals, whilst still supporting the free speech of everyone concerned. I’m very sure that if my opinion had swung towards the gender-critical side, no-one would be trying to claim that I was biased now. And I think that where there has been prejudice, it has been directed at me, for exercising my right to a belief that a very well-connected group of people in the media feel I simply shouldn’t hold.
Please don’t see this an an invitation to attack these people on social media. Whatever they may have said about me, whatever lies and smears they have used to make their case, I do not condone attacks or abuse in my name. If you feel there is a legitimate complaint to be made about anyone, then please do so via the SOA, according to their Dignity & Respect policy, not on Twitter.  Twitter can be ugly, and things can quickly get out of hand there.
When I was elected to the Management Committee, I promised to concentrate on promoting diverse voices and ensuring that the SOA was an inclusive, fair and welcoming environment for every kind of writer. This current attack on our democracy by a vocal group of ideologues not only threatens that promise, but uses up valuable resources of time, expense and energy that would be better spent dealing with the needs of our members.

I am like you; believing that words are of no significance.
I had chosen prolonged silence for years. I thought that nothing was effective. I no longer believed in the ability to change, or in any ability at all. I opted for isolation, withdrawal and limited work in silence. I did not share my thoughts about any matter, not for the lack of thoughts, but for the scarcity of energy. Still, I do not claim that those choices were right, prideworthy or that they brought me any comfort at all.
But today I do not publish about P@le$t!ne to change anything (although it seems that we did manage to destabilize the we$t-ern narrative). I write to be able to face the mirror. I publish to tell my people there that I am with them with whatever help I can offer. I write because silence is no longer a choice, even if my content is read by only 3 friends who already believe in the same cause. I write for people like me to know that we are not a minority. I write to feel that I exist, and to make them feel they do exist. I write and publish because I won't forgive myself if I don't, and I won't forgive the world anyway.

Reflections on a Year of Reading Filipino Literature
Titles Read:
Filipino American Lives by Yen Le Espiritu
America is Not the Heart by  Elaine Castillo
Dark on the Inside by Virginia Cantorna
Before the announcement of the assignment to select a country for independent reading, I already made up my mind in choosing to do the Philippines. The Philippines is my home country, and it is where my parents and ancestors are from. My older sister, who is now graduated from Everett High, also chose the Philippines. I intended to get a firmer grasp on the history of the Philippines since I haven’t learned much about it. However, over the course of 20 weeks, I have delved so deep into the Filipino perspective, which wasn’t just plain old history. The literature of the Philippines is a diverse and rich body of work that reflects the country's complex history, culture, and society. A common theme in Philippine literature is social inequality and poverty. Many writers address the issue of social injustice and portray the lives of the marginalized and disadvantaged sectors of society. They explore the struggles and hardships of the poor, the landless, and the working class. Family and community are also recurring themes in Philippine literature. Filipino culture places great importance on family relationships and community ties, and this is often reflected in literature. Many works depict the family as a source of strength, comfort, and support, and explore the complex dynamics of Filipino family life. Community is also portrayed as a vital aspect of Philippine society, with the bonds of friendship and shared experiences often being emphasized. Religion and spirituality are also important themes in Philippine literature. The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic country, and religion plays a significant role in the lives of many Filipinos. I have not only learned so much about Filipino history, but I’ve also learned more about Filipino culture, traditions, and the experience of immigrating and assimilating into American culture as a Filipino. The prominent authors of the exceptional books I have hand picked allowed me to better understand not only my country, but my people as well.
Filipino American Lives by Yen Le Espiritu is a compelling and insightful book that explores the experiences of Filipino Americans and their struggles for identity, acceptance, and representation in American society. One of the key takeaways from this book is the importance of understanding and acknowledging the complex intersections of race, ethnicity, and gender in shaping the experiences of Filipino Americans. The book highlights the ways in which Filipino Americans have been both marginalized and stereotyped in American society, facing discrimination and prejudice based on their racial and ethnic identity. At the same time, the book also portrays the resilience and strength of the Filipino American community, and their efforts to assert their identity and claim their place in American society.
America is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo is a poignant and moving novel that explores the experiences of Filipino immigrants in the United States, and the challenges they face as they navigate the complexities of cultural and sexual identity, family relationships, and personal growth. One of the key takeaways from this book is the importance of understanding your identity and who you truly are, who you choose to be, who you choose to love, and how you choose to live. Unlike the previous book which included many stories from many individuals, this story mostly centers its focus on one protagonist, Hero.
Dark on the Inside by Virginia Cantorna touches heavily on Filipino familial and traditional values. It is a tragic novel full of rollercoasters with lots of traumatic twists and turns. This novel taught me the cruelty of both war and tradition. Bound by poverty, rules, and beliefs, the author portrays the hardships from the perspective of a poor Filipino in the middle of World War 2 amazingly well. One of the key takeaways from this novel is the importance of perseverance along with the understanding of relationships. The author not only portrayed the struggles of relationships in a romantic sense, but she also focuses on family, religion, trauma, marriage, and again, tradition. Despite everything that holds you back, you must keep moving forward to find your happiness.
Filipino literature has taught me that there are countless stories and perspectives to be shared, and that these narratives can provide insight into the human experience. It has also highlighted the importance of finding and understanding who you are. In Filipino literature, I learned an incredible amount about the history, culture, and social issues of the Philippines. It has also helped me gain insights into the struggles and triumphs of the Filipino people, and the diversity of their experiences and perspectives. Moreover, reading Filipino literature inspired me to reflect on my own cultural identity and heritage. It prompted me to think deeply about who I am as a first generation Filipino American.

My exposure to anime as a younger person was almost exclusively the Ouran High School Host Club and I was going through a Les Mis bit at the same time, so all my face claims and some character behaviour headcanons have unfortunately been influenced.
Tamaki and Kyoya were obviously Enj and Combeferre (Mommy and Daddy HELLO)
Jehan was Mitsukuni (tho sometimes it was Joly and Mori was Bossuet)
The twins: Feuilly and Courfeyrac
Grantaire was Haruhi, because her ability to just make fun of anything the boys were doing always made me laugh.

Citizens, the nineteenth century is great, but the twentieth century will be happy. Then, there will be nothing more like the history of old, we shall no longer, as to-day, have to fear a conquest, an invasion, a usurpation, a rivalry of nations, arms in hand, an interruption of civilization depending on a marriage of kings, on a birth in hereditary tyrannies, a partition of peoples by a congress, a dismemberment because of the failure of a dynasty, a combat of two religions meeting face to face, like two bucks in the dark, on the bridge of the infinite; we shall no longer have to fear famine, farming out, prostitution arising from distress, misery from the failure of work and the scaffold and the sword, and battles and the ruffianism of chance in the forest of events. One might almost say: There will be no more events. We shall be happy. The human race will accomplish its law, as the terrestrial globe accomplishes its law; harmony will be re-established between the soul and the star; the soul will gravitate around the truth, as the planet around the light. Friends, the present hour in which I am addressing you, is a gloomy hour; but these are terrible purchases of the future. A revolution is a toll. Oh! the human race will be delivered, raised up, consoled! We affirm it on this barrier. Whence should proceed that cry of love, if not from the heights of sacrifice? Oh my brothers, this is the point of junction, of those who think and of those who suffer; this barricade is not made of paving-stones, nor of joists, nor of bits of iron; it is made of two heaps, a heap of ideas, and a heap of woes. Here misery meets the ideal. The day embraces the night, and says to it: ‘I am about to die, and thou shalt be born again with me.’ From the embrace of all desolations faith leaps forth.

Study Session
Requested by outsiders anon: "DPS REQUESTS OK HMMMM- get this- the poets that are in fact not dead- and in a society- live out a happy life- where there's no bad stuff. They just chill in a library, drinking tea, vibing to Beethoven. As we know all poets obviously do. Why yes I definitely have seen the film. 😁👍 - outsiders anon"
Outsiders anon I literally love you. Like when you sent the thing cause i was active for the first time in a while, and then this and the les mis ask- I just really want you to know I appreciate you!!
The Dead Poets x reader (platonic or romantic can be inferred for any)
trigger warnings: none
premise: just a study session with the dead poets, that only slightly goes off the rails. I offer to you my sort of dark acadamiea-ey dark academia playlist
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You had been the first one into the library, heading to the back, and claiming the largest table possible, ignoring the librarians glares.
You dropped your backpack into a seat, and plopped down into the next one over, starting to pull out your studying materials.
Cameron arrived next, dropping into a chair at the other end of the table, "Hey, (y/n)."
"Hey Cam. What's up?"
"I think Chemistry is killing me." He complained, digging through his own bag.
You nodded, "Yeah, it is looking pretty bleak. Meeks should be able to help though."
"Thank god for Meeks." Cameron muttered.
"Thank god for Meeks indeed," Neil said, sliding into a seat, Todd following behind him, "What's going on?"
"Chemistry." You and Cameron answered in unison.
Todd stifled a laugh as he pulled his binders from his bag, "That bad?"
"Horrible." Cameron groaned.
You nodded, "Terrible even."
"Never fear the snack bois are here!" Charlie announced as he and Knox hurried to the back of the library, dumping their bags of chips and candy onto the table.
After a few minutes, everyone settled in, and Charlie frowned, looking around, "You know I think for the first time in his life, Steven James Meeks is late!"
"Okay- I want theories. Why is he late?" You asked, work entirely forgotten.
"Traffic?" Knox frowned.
You nodded, "Plausible- but this is a school campus, where most buildings are accessible from the dorms without cars."
"Maybe his alarm didn't go off this morning." Todd shrugged.
"It's four in the afternoon, that wouldn't matter by now." Charlie scoffed.
"What wouldn't matter by now?" Pitts asked suddenly.
You and Charlie jumped, turning around to find him seeming to have materialized behind you, Meeks standing beside him.
"Jesus Christ!" Charlie explained, "How long were you standing there?"
"Like ten seconds?" Pitts frowned, moving to drop into an empty seat, placing the homemade radio onto the table.
Meeks rolled his eyes, moving your bag out of the last empty seat and sitting down, "We forgot the radio and had to go back. Didn't mean to scare anyone."
"I mean, I might have but..." Pitts muttered.
You shook your head, "Oh, your evil Pittsie."
Cameron rolled his eyes, "Does anyone understand the chemistry homework?"
Distracted from making faces at Pitts, you nodded, "Yeah I'm getting desperate. I'll trade calc answers for chem work."
Neil looked up from his binder, "Deal. Gimmie your calc sheet."
Happily, you swapped papers with him, ignoring Cameron's disapproving look as Meeks laughed and began to explain the concept to him.
"Did anyone do the Latin?" Todd asked quietly.
You nodded, pausing in copying down Neil's answers to hand him your papers, "Meeksie went over that during lunch."
"Thanks."
Pitts fiddled with the radio until a partially static tune began to play, filling the now mostly quiet air. You settled into the comfortable atmosphere, quickly finishing the Chemistry work and handing the paper back to Neil before moving on to your English assignment.
Quiet music continued, and few words were exchanged, so the only other real sounds came from the shuffling of papers, and the crinkle of food wrappers.
Study sessions were the best.
