Physical Signs of Extreme Pain: Weird Edition 👽❤️‍🩹🤷‍♀️
I've made some pain reference posts over the years, but apart from passing out from pain, I haven't gotten much into the just plain weird shit the body does when it's really hurting. Time to fix that.
Fireflies: Sure, seeing spots is a thing. Black spots on the edge of your whumpee's vision, getting closer in slow pulses when they're having trouble breathing and struggling to hang onto consciousness. But when they just straight up hurt, your whumpee can get weird little floating things that flash like fireflies or tiny pieces of metallic silver confetti drifting around. In my experience, they've been linked to effort--they tend to either start or multiply fast when I stand up or otherwise try to move when I'm in unusually intense pain.
Shivering: Not because your whumpee is cold or in shock, but because their muscles are taut to the point of strain (because the body responds to pain with muscle tension), and when those muscles can't tighten further, they shake. It's the same mechanism that makes your fists shake if you're angry and clenching them past the point they can reasonably be clenched, just all over.
Teeth Chattering: No, seriously. In my experience, it mostly tends to happen as the shivering escalates, but I've had it just start up on its own when I get slammed with a spike in pain out of nowhere like cramps, or if I'm late taking a dose of my meds. I hate it because in the first place it's annoying, in the second place it's very noticeable, and in the third place I have absolutely no control over it. Clenching my teeth doesn't stop the muscles from trying to make them chatter, it just makes them (even more) sore. Also it's hard to talk, and I bite my cheek and tongue. A lot.
Ear Stuff: A ring that your whumpee feels as much as they hear. It's not a tone like a lot of tinnitus is, it's more like the pressure-changing "sound" you'll get as a plane takes off. And it feels like it's physically inside their ears, like someone has taken the world's heaviest, smallest ball-bearing and stuck it in their ear canals and it's trying to pull them down into and through the floor.
The Air Hurts: Your whumpee gets an all-over feeling like someone pressing lightly on a bruise, and the more they think about it, concentrate on it, the more their brain becomes irrationally convinced that the air has become dense around them and that's what's causing it. Because nothing is there, there is no external pressure, it's just pain signals behaving in a goofy way, and their brain is scrambling for an explanation. They might subconsciously pull their hands or other exposed skin into their clothing, or hunch over and pull everything in toward their chest to "protect" their skin from the air around them.
Have chronic or acute traumatic pain? See something missing from this post? Add on!

The whumpee bottled up their emotions after being rescued, because they knew their friends would never approve of how much the whumpee wanted to hurt the whumper. The whumpee couldn’t help it though- their anger had been festering during their captivity and after, and they would do anything to get their hands on the whumper, no matter the cost.

Whump prompt:
Exhaustion that is so deeply felt that you can barely move at all, your arms and legs feeling like iron rods. Then the physical exhaustion combined with the emotional exhaustion of the situation and it forces down your emotional walls and you end up just sobbing in the middle of your room.

A whumpee begging for the pain to stop—but it’s their own body they’re begging against. “Please don’t spasm again…”, “Please don’t pass out right now,” “Please.”
Bonus points if there’s nothing caretaker can do to help them.

Whumper lets Whumpee eat whatever they want, whenever they want. Whumper even lets them have however much they want.
Except, as expected, there's a catch...
Whenever Whumpee decides to eat, they are forced to see disgusting imagery of some sort, and are forced to keep watching for the entire time they're eating. Look away or try to avoid it, and they lose food privileges for a bit, if not get beat and punished too.
How does Whumper go about this? Do they have some sort of telepathic power that allows them to force the imagery to run wild in Whumpee's mind? Does Whumper secure Whumpee to a chair, head locked in place, forcing them to watch timelapses of food decaying on a tv?
Is it something more domestic? Cuddling on the couch during Whumpee's dinner, and watching gory movies?
Or... y'know what? Why not go full out and make it the real deal?
Whumpee opens the fridge for the first time and finds that all of the food is mouldy, decaying, and spoiled. Or maybe they find a more... grotesque and bloody scene in there, with a very unpleasant smell to match.
Eventually Whumpee starts to associate food with the disgusting imagery. They start losing their appetite as soon as they enter the kitchen, or a plate is set in front of them. Maybe even feeling a little nauseous in the process.
And the effects last long after Whumpee's free from Whumper's control. They struggle to finish one small, simple meal, let alone three of them. Even their favorite food is almost completely inedible now.
Just... Whumpee who now has to relearn how to enjoy food. Y'know?

i love. all powerful whumpers. i know i talk about this a lot but i just really absolutely love when a whumper controls every aspect of whumpee's life. not even as a human, but more as a god. a being so far above whumpee that they genuinely have no chance of fighting back.
maybe whumper literally created whumpee, and is now playing with them like a puppet. and whumpee is forced to bump into the invisible walls of their confined world over and over again, realising again and again that they can only ever go as far as whumper allows.
and maybe... sometimes... whumpee thinks they have outwitted whumper. they find a little loophole, a glitch in the matrix, a tear in the fabric of their artificial reality. they take the opportunity immediately, thinking they're about to be free... only to end up as a pawn in whumper's game yet again. the opening was put there on purpose, specifically for whumpee to find. and where it led was entirely controlled. and whumper enjoyed every second of this delightful little show of whumpee feeling some hope, only for it to be violently ripped away.
again.

21. working through illness
cw // vomiting
whumpee leans against the table. their vision is swimming, head pounding with a red-hot migraine, limbs aching from exhaustion. it's the worst time for them to fall sick. they can't afford it; this project is too important, too costly, and they're the only one that can be trusted to finish it.
"whumpee, are you okay?" whumpee's coworker asks, their tone soft and worried. a jolt of fear runs through whumpee. nobody can know that they've fallen ill. if they do, then they'll be disappointed in them, they'll hate them, whumpee will let everyone down, again-
"i'm fine. just a bit of a headache." whumpee waves them off. they give whumpee a confused look, clearly noticing the pale sheen of their face, the hollows under their eyes, the way their shoulders shake with the effort of holding up their body. still, they don't comment on any of it.
"alright, if you say so. can you take a look at this part then? it doesn't look right to me." whumpee's coworker hands over the part. whumpee takes it from them, trying to examine it through their blurry vision. they see an aberration in the metal and wince.
"i, uh... i must've drawn the schematic wrong. there has to be another bolt in that piece. i'll fix it right away." whumpee says in a rush, turning around to sift around their desk for the schematic. it was a stupid mistake. they should've known better, they should've done better, this is why no one trusts them-
"alright..." whumpee's coworker starts, clearly uncomfortable.
"are you sure you're okay?" whumpee nods their head and their coworker sighs, dropping the subject. it's no use arguing with whumpee when they've made up their mind.
"yeah. don't worry. i'll be fine." they spread out the schematic with shaking hands and pick up their pencil and eraser. they clean up the drawing, carefully adding another bolt into the correct location. it looks slightly wonky from how hard their hands are shaking, but it'll have to do.
"here, it should be fixed now." whumpee hands it over. their coworker frowns at the crude addition, but they just nod and walk out of whumpee's workroom.
"thanks. i'll, uh... let you know if anything else is up." whumpee nods. their face is slick with sweat. they act nonchalant until their coworker leaves, then they collapse onto the floor, crawling over to the garbage can and heaving straight acid into the plastic bag.
"fuck..." they wipe off the spit and vomit from their lips. everything is spinning. their fingers are shaking where they're gripping the garbage can. still, they feel a little bit better now.
they stand up, wipe off their mouth with the back of their hand, and limp over to their desk to finish up the next schematic.

Since we've been talking about it quite a bit recently, let me introduce an underrepresented part of conditioning: stupid shit.
Not everything you've been conditioned to believe will elicit a negative response to is going to trigger a full-on meltdown. Your whumpee likely has habits that only a caretaker who is looking will notice. Your caretaker might even make comments or tease them about it, because they're clearly not upset, so they're just being weird.
I was a prey kid, and my ptsd from that was probably closer to combat fatigue than strictly emotional damage. I did a ton of things nobody noticed, and the people who noticed never suspected why. I never sat with my back exposed, I always took the back row. I packed up all my worldly belongings and took them with me if I had to go to the restroom. I didn't answer to my name in the hall unless I recognized the voice. Failing to do these, I had learned, had catastrophic consequences; my life depended on them.
Conditioning changes your perception; it changes how your brain registers sound, for example. My brain just straight up discarded the sound of my name if it was someone I didn't know. I had no conscious idea that I was walking away from perfectly harmless people who were just trying to get my attention. I just didn't hear them.
Then I went and got myself an abusive girlfriend, because why not... and the opposite happened. I got told multiple times a day that I was walking wrong and sounded "like a herd of elephants." I didn't realize til we stayed with my aunt who has new hardwood floors that my footsteps sound WAY louder to me than anyone else's, and I wasn't taking actual steps but instead sort of sliding my feet along. I didn't notice until I tripped on a rug that nobody else was moving like this. This was weird. And I'm working on it, I've started to walk with the ball of my foot first like a Degas dancer. But if my heel hits the floor first it sounds like an earthquake to me.
Give your whumpee stupid shit that stays with them even as they recover from the big stuff, not worked on or even noticed by their caretaker and maybe the whumpee themselves. Make it an inconvenience. Make it instinctive. Make it awkward. Conditioning is a spectrum of survival behaviors, and the milder end of that spectrum is just as important as the more severe end if you want to write it realistically.

Asthma whump promts!
Because I hate living like this
Whumpee not having their inhaler when they get their first asthma attack with Whumper
Whumper making Whumpee suffer by withholding their inhaler while they're sufficating – and enjoying them beg and plead to just give I'll do anything, just please, please, just let me breathe—
Whumper degrading Whumpee's asthma! Withholding their inhaler, and instead opening up the windows because fresh air will help you, it'll clear out your lungs, Whumpee
Whumpee being unable to fall asleep, because when their breath slows down, suddenly they don't have enough oxygen and have to breathe manually!!
“It'll pass. It's nothing, just breathe.”
(SAYING THAT ^^^ WITH A SMILE ON THEIR FACE)
Making Whumpee inhale chemicals/allergens to enduce an asthma attack!! Or just making them run laps/jump a skipping rope until they can no longer breathe (y'all i have too much experience with this ong)
Whumpee's inhaler runs out when they need it the most (that panic, making the attack even worse because their breathing is fast and too shallow)
Whumpee's attacks getting more frequent because they don't have their daily medication meant to supress them!! (IT SUCKS)
Whumper having asthma! When they try to catch an escaping Whumpee they just can't reach them, god, it hurts, how can they run so fast—
Suprise! You can no longer breathe comfortably – therefore, have to wake up and search for your inhaler with eyes half closed and that suffocating pressure in your chest!
Just the tingling feeling in Whumpee's chest that signalizes an asthma attack is on its way and they can do nothing but to sit down and calm down and just TRY TO BREATHE JUST BREATHE BREATHE, IT'S FINE IT'S NOT THAT BAD YOU CAN BREATHE, BREATHE OPEN UP THE WINDOW BUT IT'S COLD OUTSIDE OH SHIT NO NOT COLD AIR, CLOSE IT!!! IG TURN ON A/C??? SIT DOWN, CONTROL YOUR BREATHING YOU'RE FINE YOU'RE FINE, NOTHING A LITTLE RELAXATION WON'T FIX, HAHA, JUST SIT ON THE CHAIR KEEP YOUR POSTURE STRAIGHT AND STAY CALM—
Whumper laying something heavy on Whumpee's chest to make them struggle to even breathe, while they hold their inhaler just out of Whumpee's reach “Come on, don't you want it? It's right here, grab it.” and Whumpee just can't, the weight, the pressure is suffocating—
Whumpee gaslighting themselves that they can breathe just fine and they're being dramatic </3
Caretaker coming home to Whumpee wheezing in tears, “It...it...r-ran out-...i-”
^^^ Their inhaler being a prescription medicine (WHY IS THAT A THING ANYWAY, LIKE?!!) and Caretaker freaking out and calling their doctor to prescribe them a new inhaler, now
Whumper comforting Whumpee after undergoing an asthma attack, because they know what it's like to suffocate alone like that
Shallow coughing and inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, oh shit, IIINHALE
Wheezing and panting, grunting
Whumper making Whumpee use their inhaler too much, resulting in Whumpee building a tolerance towards it so when they really need it they need to take like 4 puffs for it to work and it just keeps getting worse, the inhaler gets used up too quickly and it eventually runs out
Whumpee checking how much fluid remains in the container, the amount, the weight is less and less until there's barely anything left and they try to save their last dose of it until they can get a new one prescribed </3
Whumper is mocking Whumpee for having asthma and Whumpee is taking it... bad... yelling at Whumper, crying and stuttering, rage and anger, for once something else than pressure in their chest – burning, hatred
(Ok I saw this in a detective series but) Whumper lacing Whumpee's inhaler with something to enduce an asthma attack
Whumpee having panic attacks that then turn to asthma attacks and back to panic attacks and then back to‐ (it's a vicious cycle) </3 (fr glad to at least not suffer from this)
Ok, that's probably all I can think of in one go, maybe I'll make a part 2, y'all can send me some other ideas, I'll write them down and tag the user at the end of the post, k bye ✌
