An Introduction to my Whump Ocs: The Lord's Favorite

Ethan Everest-Mann is, quite literally, an everyman. He works at an office job, drinks black coffee, and is rapidly approaching his 40th birthday. He likes dressing in business casual, watches the news, and has minimal free time. He's, in literally every sense of the word, boring. The most boring, normal person alive - and he's perfectly fine with that.

But for some reason, out of all the people in the universe, the One Who Watches, Lord with One Thousand Eyes, The Great Devourer, Collector of Worlds, The Bringer of Endings, Keeper of Time and Space, Ro'tharoth, has decided that Ethan is, in fact, his favorite mortal in all the worlds. He adores watching him, loves seeing what he does and says, and has made a human form just to talk to him! Ethan is his blorbo, the bestest human ever (in his opinion), and he'll happily spend all his time watching him when he's not bringing ends to worlds and extinguishing stars.

However, he's getting a bit bored with the usual things that Ethan is doing. And what does one do when canon is boring?

You put your blorbo in Situations. You make AUs. You write angst.

So Ethan is plunged into a variety of Situations - everything from being kidnaped and sacrificed by cult, to being falsely accused of murder and forced to run from the law, to dying stranded in space. He doesn't know when the world will change - usually it's after he dies a horrific and gruesome death, but it continually does, and he can't even die to have the nightmare end. He's the plaything of a cosmic god he can't even comprehend, let alone understand, and his sanity is fraying just as much as his body is mutilated.

Meanwhile, Ro'tharoth is having the time of his life! His favorite mortal is now doing so many new and interesting things, and it's so much fun to watch him try. Using that mortal form, he even gets to help in the stories - take care of his favorite character, heal him up, talk to him - it's all fantastic. He's sure that Ethan is having fun too, because he always resets the world after the really scary stuff, and he tries to comfort him after every new au through their human form, or letting him talk to them after they die.

Ethan, is, in fact, not having fun.

It's the relationship of a whumper and their whumpee on a cosmic scale, of knowing you're a character designed to recieve torture and pain for someone else's entertainment or catharsis, and how that would feel. They have a really fun dynamic, and I can't wait to share more - their arcs are really cool, and I love them so much.

Perfectly Clean Mind Control

Whump: psychological abuse, mind control, manipulation, identity altering, (de)conditioning, paranoia.

Mind control that doesn't dominate your thoughts, it just... is your thoughts. Perfectly rewriting your will and everything it embodies. Not a single trace of resistance because this is just what you want. Why would you resist your own thoughts? Why would you disagree with your own motivations, your own desires?

Mind control that doesn't shatter once it's done, it just disappears. You don't snap back into awareness. You barely even notice. You just continue as if nothing ever happened. Maybe one moment you look back and you frown, because thinking on it, you remember when you happily followed that person out of town, and you remember what you did, you remember wanting to... but that's crazy. Why did you think that was okay? Why did you want to do that?

Or maybe you were under this mind control for so long that even once it's over you look back and say, "Oh, of course I did that." As far as you're concerned you've always held the beliefs you do now. You've always wanted to do these things. You don't remember why, but you've never had to think of why, and it doesn't matter anyway when you've always been so confident that you're right. It isn't until you're challenged on it all and reminded that you never used to be like this, that you were different before, that something has changed that you finally falter. And you try to think of where this all started, try to figure out why things changed -- and all you can really remember is an entrancing pair of eyes, and a gentle suggestion, and then your own mouth responding, "That's a great idea. Let's go."

And suddenly, you realise that you have no idea how much of what you are, what you were, and what you believed you always have been is just a lie. You don't know whether any thought you have now is really yours or just another preciously placed prompt. You don't trust your impulses, you don't trust your desires, you definitely don't trust your judgement.

You don't trust yourself. And you never can again.

Comfort tropes I absolutely love

I don't normally write much comfort, instead preferring to focus on the hurt, but I may or may not have gotten some ideas from my Hunger Games oc:)

Whumpee showing up at Caretaker's door in the middle of the night. Hurt, disheveled, bleeding. When their eyes meet Caretaker's, they radiate pain. "I didn't know where else to go."

Whumpee breaking down in Caretaker's arms. Caretaker holds them tightly, their grip secure yet gentle, while Whumpee clutches onto them as if they'd dissappear if they let go. As Whumpee's tears dampen Caretaker's shirt, they simply caress their hair, shushing them and reassuring them that they're okay. They're safe now.

"I'm not going anywhere. You can rest."

Caretaker who has been through a situation similar to Whumpee's. So they understand. They're connected, in a way. And they make sure Whumpee is comforted in a way they never were, protected to an extent they never knew, and cared for in a way they never felt.

"This will never happen to you again. I'll make sure of it."

On that previous note, perhaps Caretaker and Whumpee's comfort isn't one-sided- they take care of each other. They both allow the other to be vulnerable around them, because they both know. And that creates a bond so deep that the constellations themselves could not transcend it.

"It's not your fault." Whumpee nods. "I know." Yet they don't believe it. So Caretaker cups their face, simultaneously firmly and carefully, and repeats it. "Listen to me. No, no- really listen. It's not your fault. It's not your fault." And they say it and say it until Whumpee's cheeks are wet with tears, because that's when they know that they understand.

I am always inconveniencing this poor man. I mean who doesn't like to harass their OCs a little? You know. As a treat.

Building on a concept that I mentioned in my nuanced!whumper appreciation post: Role Reversal.

The whumpee, very tragically, dies from their suffering, their wounds. Their caretaker holds them in their arms as they die, and something in them snaps. They drop the body, go rigid, emotionless, and then tracks down the whumper and fucking breaks them, because if they can't bring the whumpee back, they can bring hell upon the one who killed them.

Or the whumpee doesn't die, but comes back decidedly wrong, something fractured in ways that cannot be repaired, not even by their caretaker - the caretaker is doing their best, but sometimes the cracks in a person's foundations can't be sealed through love and care. Sometimes they have to be sealed through bloodshed - and their whumper has blood to spare. Might as well utilize what their whumper... taught them.

The whumper becomes the whumpee, and maybe this makes them see the error of their ways, maybe they become even more bloodthirsty as a result, maybe they get a victim complex, maybe it just breaks their mind further, or maybe they love it! Maybe this is fun for them! Maybe they appreciate their new whumper doing this for them, who knows!

I like role reversal because it allows for exploration of a character beyond their original dynamic - whump is all about the dynamic, of course, but I love character above all, and really think it shines when you mix it up.

whumpee basking in the affection, and returning it (as much as they can). they missed caretaker more than anything. and caretaker came to save them.
