From Wellness trend to Everyday Staple: The Growing Popularity of Alkaline Water in India
Have you ever wondered why some people swear by drinking alkaline water? What is the science behind it and what are the benefits? Is it just a fad or a lifestyle choice that can improve your health and well-being?
Tumblr media
In this article, we will explore the rise of drinking alkaline water culture in India, and how it affects different segments of the population, such as health conscious individuals, housewives, athletes and higher net worth individuals. We will also compare the different types of alkaline water available in the market, and why not all of them are created equal.
What is Alkaline Water and Why is it Good for You?
Alkaline water is water that has a higher pH level than regular tap water, which is usually neutral or slightly acidic. The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is, from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic, and anything above 7 is alkaline.
The human body has a natural pH balance of around 7.4, which is slightly alkaline. However, due to various factors such as diet, stress, pollution, medication, and aging, the body can become more acidic over time. This can lead to various health problems, such as inflammation, fatigue, digestive issues, skin problems, and chronic diseases.
Drinking alkaline water can help restore the pH balance of the body, by neutralizing the excess acidity and flushing out the toxins. According to some studies, alkaline water can also provide other benefits, such as:
- Improving hydration and oxygen delivery to the cells
- Enhancing the immune system and preventing infections
- Boosting metabolism and energy levels
- Reducing the risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones
- Supporting weight loss and detoxification
- Preventing or slowing down the aging process
However, not all alkaline water is the same, and some types may not offer the same benefits as others.
The Difference Between Ionized and Naturally Alkaline Water
There are two main ways to produce alkaline water: ionization and natural mineralization.
Ionized alkaline water is created by passing an electric current through regular tap water, which separates the water molecules into acidic and alkaline components. The alkaline water is then collected and bottled, while the acidic water is discarded. Ionized alkaline water has a high pH level, usually between 8 and 10, and a negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), which means it has antioxidant properties.
However, ionized alkaline water also has some drawbacks, such as:
- It is artificial and unstable, and loses its alkalinity and antioxidant properties quickly
- It does not contain any minerals or trace elements, which are essential for the body's health and function
- It may have harmful contaminants, such as chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and microorganisms, depending on the quality of the source water and the filtration system
- It may cause side effects, such as nausea, headache, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalance, if consumed in large quantities or without proper guidance
Naturally alkaline water, on the other hand, is water that has a high pH level due to the presence of natural minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and bicarbonate. These minerals are dissolved in the water as it passes through rocks and soil, and give the water a smooth and refreshing taste. Naturally alkaline water has a moderate pH level, usually between 7.5 and 8.5, and a positive ORP, which means it has a neutral or slightly oxidizing effect.
Naturally alkaline water has several advantages over ionized alkaline water, such as:
- It is natural and stable, and retains its alkalinity and mineral content for a long time
- It provides the body with essential minerals and trace elements, which can improve the bone health, blood pressure, blood sugar, and nerve function
- It is free of harmful contaminants, as it undergoes rigorous testing and purification processes
- It is safe and gentle, and does not cause any adverse reactions or imbalances in the body
What is the Best Choice for Alkaline Water in India?
Many people are attracted by the claims of Kangen water, which is supposed to be alkaline ionized water produced by a machine called Enagic. However, what they don’t tell you is that Kangen water is not naturally alkaline, but artificially created by passing an electric current through tap water. This process does not add any minerals or nutrients to the water, but only raises its pH level temporarily. As soon as the water is exposed to air or consumed, it loses its alkalinity and antioxidant properties. Moreover, Kangen water may contain harmful contaminants, such as chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and microorganisms, depending on the quality of the source water and the filtration system. Kangen water is not only expensive, but also ineffective and potentially dangerous. It is a scam that preys on the ignorance and desperation of people who are looking for a quick fix for their health problems

Uludağ Sparkling Natural Mineral Water
This caught my eye because it was only $.49 and also because most of the words were in English on the bottle. It's some damn good water, and the carbonation tasted..."smoother" than normal. Like, less aggressive despite not being any less carbonated that any other seltzer I've had. Maybe the minerals mellow it out? Who knows? (water scientists, probably).
10/10.
