I intend to keep this account mainly art-based, but I wanted to share these pics of me cosplaying as my fictional hero, Nausicaä (of the Valley of the Wind).

I can't express enough how perfect Miyazaki has written this character. She was the hero that every living thing in her strong but gentle presence needed, in the movie AND manga. If you haven't seen either, I strongly recommend.

She is everything I hope to be as a person.

This is a super old picture (October, 2021) photo of my Nausicaa cosplay. This was a cosplay that I made when I could no longer ignore that my physical abilities and mobility needs were changes. In fact, later that day in the Contest the staff brought chairs for me so that I could sit while being on deck and during the awards ceremony because it was a Low Spoons day.

It is only now that I am starting to get answers on what MAY have been the cause of all of this. You know, beyond the POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) that I have lived with for over half my life. Add in the work day where I was in constant meetings and outreach mode, and Nausicaa's pose and expression very much match how I am feeling.

This has been a long time coming! I'm glad she's a costume I can work a mask into without it breaking the design of the character. I feel like people would be less inclined to ask that you remove it for photos this way ^^;

I went with a very thin cotton gauze fabric (#9 "coffee" if you're wondering), think a slightly thicker cheese cloth. It's very breathable as a single layer and seemed the best choice for an N95 cover. The shape was really only achievable with this fabric because of the shape of my mask underneath, and some strategically placed 1/2" wide horsehair braid tubing from the dollar tree. I usually stock up around halloween but they stock around christmas too!

Process is very straight forward, just traced my mask on the fold and made some rough adjustments for a card stock mock up. I like 90-110 lbs for this sort of thing but construction paper can work in a pinch too. Cut that out and fit to my face, tweaked the placement on the nose bridge and added a 1/4" allowance for bias tape/facing, and appropriate allowance for flat felled seams.

The ear tab was extended to cover the mask underneath, and included allowance for support fabric (denim scrap in my case) to support two eyelets intended to thread the elastic of my mask through. Then it was just patterning out the rest of the mask elements and making note of seam allowance and how to cut each piece. I trimmed the tape holding together the card stock mask apart and finally got to cutting out the fabric once that was done.

There isn't anything fancy going on, the hardest part was just the inset mesh panel over the weirdly shaped keyhole cut outs on the mouth piece. It's just black nylon mesh typically used for interfacing bras sewn on after making the keyholes.

This fabric is like if toilet paper were a textile, which is great for breatheability and weight but absolutely hell for machine work like this. It's not for a competition so for me, hiding messy stitching with weathering later was ok.

The portion of the mask running from the underside of each ear tab was finished with homemade bias tape. The same method was used for finishing the top portion that runs over the bridge of my nose. The ends were simply folded and sewn down at the ear tabs for a clean finish.

The side "filters" have an extra 1/2" long extension so I can tack in the ends of some horse hair tubing, then double fold the fabric back into itself before hand tacking with tiny stitches from the outside. That helps the light fabric balloon out into that shape, along with another layer of that same mesh interfacing.

They are really fun actually, very floppy with great movement. Though they stick out a tad too much so I did add one small french tack to the center of each to help them point downwards but retain that movement. The "filter" took the most hand finishing out of the whole thing, but that was to be expected.

Once the little side "filters" were sewn in, there was just light weathering to do. I wanted to add some shadows and potential "mold spores" to certain areas to really make the texture pop and hide some messy stitching. Light passes with a dry brush and some acrylic helped a lot, so did referencing photos of mold growth on clothes.

It was a pass of burnt sienna along all seams and large patches where high humidity would accumulate. Then another lighter pass of burnt umber to deepen up areas, and some very sparse areas of white. Finally I wanted to give it the "blue cheese special" and mixed a little viridian green and that same white and hit the white areas first then dry brushed the spaces between mold patches. I'm trying to replicate active mold colonies so reference photos came in handy here. I also used some nail polish to match the grommets to fabric.

Maybe when I am not crunched for time I will get around to digitizing the pattern, but for now I hope the photos help anyone else trying to plan out a mask. Obviously the shape will change a lot depending on the sort of fabric and mask you have on under it, not to mention face shape. I would imagine bifolds would give you more her classic feed bag profile than an origami style mask, however.

For the last few months I've been working on some fun new additions to my Indigenous Nausicaa, the most ambitious of which has been this bag.

I've been thinking a lot about what a young matriarch would have access to and wear as status symbols. A lot about trade and crafts and their influence from the world around them. About floral beadwork in a world where a lot of the flora is synonymous with the toxic jungle.

Influences are pretty obvious, eastern beadwork styles but more specifically bandolier and whimsy bags! I had a lot of fun translating the fungi and spores into beads, though it was a learning curve. Not too sure if I overworked the interfacing too much or just used the wrong one all together. Some areas have tension issues, so the beads shifted but overall I'm really happy with how it turned out. This bag is also intended for personal use, so the neck strap is convertible to accommodate my belt or be worn around the neck. Looking forward to making her pink dress sometime soon.

I have file sets available for Timeskip Mercedes's Lamine motifs, Nausicaa's chest emblem (in multiple styles, irl photos coming soon), the Yasogami High emblem, and Hunter's cape emblem. So far I only make files for commissions I'm doing, but I'd love to be able to expand my available portfolio to embroidery file and vector commissions! Maybe next year if I can figure out my work-life balance 🥺

i like to think about my only human yuu* finding their phone and tablet again and just being so happy to finally have some reminders of home. having all of their apps and contacts again just as proof that yes, the life he lived before nrc did exist and she's not going crazy.

this also causes the introduction to the pop culture of their world.

yuu and ace chilling in ramshackle and then they accidentally introduce the evillious chronicles to her. the same thing happens with riddle the next day. the next time a con rolls around, they're all in evillious cosplay.

riddle is also introduced to kdramas which she becomes obsessed with.

yuu shows idia reddit and it's all over (i'm sorry but idia would be a redditor, he just has those vibes).

yuu catches up with what's happening on the internet with cater, subsequently introducing him to their world's slang and pop culture (which is surprisingly similar to twisted wonderland's with some differences). he's currently making a powerpoint to try and convince yuu to make an account for nrc using their world's social media.

first year studio ghibli movie nights. they're going to cry and start seeing the love in the little things in life.

adeuce both adore my neighbor totoro even if they won't admit it.

ortho loves ponyo and almost flew to the top or nrc when yuu gave him handmade plushies of ponyo and sosuke.

jack really liked nausicaa and often times will be found listening to the soundtrack of the movie.

sebek will deny it but he loves both spirited away and when marnie was there.

epel's absolute favorite is howl's moving castle but when asked he'll lie and say it's lupin iii: the castle of cagliostro.

yuu finally has a way to distract grim when they need to do something and they don't want him to accidentally get hurt: baby sensory videos.

also if you're wondering how they have any data: it's one of kalim's many apology presents for what happened during winter break. he added them to his data plan (if there's a will, there's a way) so that way they can use their phone and tablet.

*this is a lie, i made three new yuus and all of them are human.

Had so much fun at Amecon this weekend! Full cosplay posts will happen when I can pull photos from my camera but I'm really happy with how all of them turned out!
