Lu Guang is a hypocrite and that’s okay (great even)
Tumblr media
I must stand ten toes for this man because I’m noticing the slander that went on in September and I cannot allow it. I know I’m six months late but just bear with me. We are introduced to Lu Guang as a rational, stoic, sort of wise protagonist. The brains of the operation if you will (although Cheng is clever in his own right but that’s a whole other discussion). Qiao Ling and Captain Xiao describe him as more mature. Shiguang’s relationship is strong but it’s structured, especially for their work, to where Cheng has to depend on Lu Guang. Should only do as he says and not do anything impulsive.
And it gets to a point where Cheng doesn’t know what to do without him and when LG isn’t there he relies on his past words to guide him. The thing is, we’ve seen that CXS can come up with great plans and make good decisions without Lu Guang’s voice in his head. Like how he caught Min Liu or planning how save Lu Guang from Li Tianchen. But the story has built LG up so much to be a reliable character so it can’t be untrue. But then the s2 finale happens, Cheng gets shot and Lu Guang loses his mind.
Tumblr media
And then the ending basically tells you that he’s been winging it and gambling this whole time. Experimenting with god knows how many timelines, simply using his knowledge from the previous one to see if he’ll get lucky this time. Lu Guang has been playing a crane game. So in a story that is all about mistakes, guilt and regrets. Of showing the imperfections of people. Of showing the struggles of moving forward, of being satisfied with the present. Of sacrificing your sanity, your voice, your desires, and happiness for the people you love. How is this bad writing?
Link click has been tricking the audience to believe Lu Guang is an infallible character.
But Link Click was never about perfect people.
What he’s trying to do is no different from Li Tianchen, one of our antagonists. And I love CXS to fucking pieces but this show raises the question of a life’s value. LG is trying to save Cheng and so refuses to change the past for anyone else. Bc it may alter things and doom CXS in the process and ruin all he’s worked towards. But then you ask yourself, is CXS’s life worth more than the twins' mother? Is it worth more than Chen’s mother? Is it worth more than Emma?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn’t matter because it is to Lu Guang. It’s like the question if your sibling and a mailman are trapped in a burning building but you can only try to save one. Unless they’re the absolute scum of the earth, chances are and possibly even despite that, you’re going to pick your sibling. That don’t mean it’s objectively more valuable than the mailman or you didn’t have sympathy for that person, they have loved ones, hopes and joys too. “Lu Guang is a hypocrite, selfish, unreliable, and a liar” yes he is. Because there is something called ‘flawed characters’. It’s okay for your protagonist to not be the best person. It’s okay to write a protagonist whose trauma has defined some of their actions.
If you’ve been forced to have someone you love die in your arms over and over, why is it surprising that you would lie to them? How is it surprising that you’d try to keep secrets? That you’d set things up to be in a position to control the situation? That’ll force you to plan better so maybe, just maybe things will be different? You think Lu Guang lacks self awareness and doesn’t know what this makes him? Of all things you can call LG, he’s not delusional. He knows the weight of his actions.
Link Click has and always will be a story about people. Where our emotions and choices take us. Lu Guang isn’t a robot so why would he be an exception?
Plus everyone should’ve been knew Lu Guang was sus anyway. Idk how that’s mischaracterization, there’s proof of him lying and keeping secrets from CXS in s1. It doesn’t ruin anything it recontextualizes what we were shown back then.

not my dad not liking moral orel season 3 🤭🤭🤭that's so embarrassing for him (<- he's not wrong for feeling that way but i think it's like 60% because he doesn't like it when art gets weird and that's so so tragic for him)
#i actually think his points make sense this time. which tbqh is not normally how i feel when he criticizes smth i love#basically he was like s3 was a completely different show from the first two seasons#and he didn't like how all over the place and directionless it felt#and honestly yeah ok i can see that#personally i think the choice to broaden the focus to moralton broadly vs mostly just orel is really interesting#and it allows for different facets of their critique of fundie waspisms to extend to situations/characters orel wouldn't really be privy to#(could you imagine 'alone' with orel there? me neither)#and i personally liked them fleshing out the marginal characters. i never found that boring or like a major diversion#again they're like 11 min episodic(ish) things it's hard for them to feel like they drag on y'know#it shows a lot of ambition and i think they pulled it off really well tbh (cancellation aside)#but i will agree that the transition is a little sudden. nature is such a big moment for the series#and for orel's arc specifically but then we spend little time with orel post-nature so the tone shift doesn't#necessarily align with his realization (at least in terms of the canon timeline. ep release order does align)#it's sudden but we jump back to before the shattering. it's disorienting and i think it's kind of cool as hell#a realization like orel's in nature is gonna throw the past into question and color his life and thus the town#(bc let's face it orel is the real mayor of moralton kfhsjs) and while we've been seeing Some of moralton's ugliness#in every episode until now it's shown in full force in and post-nature (release-wise). so when the timeline jumps around#and it all feels twisted and hazy and sickening and it All Comes Back To The Hunting Trip as our point of reference#for when things are happening it makes it feel like the trip Caused this disturbance. it's almost a spatio-temporal THING#like orel IS the center of this universe. my point is it's weird and i like it a lot i think it works#but anyway i think s3 is a natural evolution of s1+2 albeit an accelerated one#and i really wish we'd gotten to see more of what s3 morel was cooking bc it was setting up some really cool stuff imo#like he hated everything w mommy censordoll x clay but it's SUCH a cool place to take their characters. freud would go crazy#moral orel#and i think if they knew where they had to end the season maybe focusing on other characters was a way to keep orel stagnant enough to like#end the finale where they needed him. maybe.#we actually DID finish it yesterday. i rewatched the finale the day before bc i was impatient but yeah 👍#now it's chapter black time >:}

Will's Powers in S5: A Deep Dive (lol)
After starting a rewatch of s1-4 since the s5 teaser drop, @frodohaven and I feel like we've cracked (a bit of) the code for Will and his powers in S5.
There's been much speculation that Will has fire powers due to the constant "fireballing" he does in the DnD campaigns and the fact that the upside down (UD)'s weakness is fire. While this is close, I'm like 99.9% sure Will actually has electricity powers, most likely acquired during his time in the UD. It's also possible he was born with them, but I'm not going to get into the origins of his powers here, that's for another time.
The Evidence:
All the way back in 1x01, Will manages to contact Joyce by phone from the UD. This is likely the first time he's using his powers, and he doesn't really know what he's doing. However, it's possible the UD is able to enhance his powers, allowing him to communicate with Joyce mere hours after being taken. The phone call ends with lightning coming out of the phone, zapping Joyce and burning the phone. Will most likely lost control of his powers when the demogorgon nearly caught him, as heard through the phone call. Throughout S1 we see Joyce damage a lot of phones due to the electricity.
Tumblr media
Later in S1, Will is able to communicate with Joyce through a bundle of christmas lights. We know lights are inherently tied to the UD, as Joyce and Hopper make the christmas lights spark for Jonathan, Nancy, and Steve in 1x08 as they traverse through the UD. What's interesting about Will though is that he's directly able to control the lights. He causes them to blink "once for yes, twice for no." He makes all the lamps in his bedroom shine in sync when Joyce asks him to do it. He spells out "R U N" with the christmas lights when Joyce talks to him. These aren't random light occurrences that come from proximity like we saw from other characters. Will has a real control over electricity from the UD.
Tumblr media
While most of the evidence is from S1, there's a reason for that. As Will isn't aware he has powers yet, being in the UD (for the entirety of S1) is likely how he's able to manifest his powers so easily. He's possessed in S2 and in the normal world in S3-4, so he doesn't have the UD acting as a conduit or enhancer anymore. He's still connected to the UD, hence his "spidey sense," but isn't able to tap into his powers just yet.
Will's Powers Vs. El's Powers
Something very interesting that's become a motif throughout the entire show is the dichotomy of El and Will. In S1, they are constantly mistaken for each other. They switch places almost exactly: Will disappears, El appears. El disappears and Will reappears. They become siblings and are most likely mistaken for twins at school in S4. They've always been 2 sides of the same coin. How does this fit in with their powers?
Tumblr media
In 1x02, there is a flashback to Hawkin's Lab in which El, presumably after using her powers, is thrown in a closet and locked inside. Why can't she just escape? If we look closely at the closet, it's lined with metal walls and a metal floor. It seems to be copper, a conductor of electricity. So if copper acts as an inhibitor for El's powers (which was never brought up again in the show after S1, which is interesting...) what enhances them? Water.
We see many many instances of El relying on water to enhance her powers throughout the seasons. In S1, she is submerged in a water tank. She walks in water in The Void. She needs a pool in order to find Will in 1x07. She needs the running shower water to find Billy in 3x03. She needs a sensory deprivation tank (NINA) in 4x05 to regain her powers. She needs a makeshift pool from a freezer in 4x08 to save Max in the UD.
Tumblr media
Why is this important? Let's look at this in regards to Will. If El and Will are 2 sides of the same coin, opposites, maybe their powers work the same way. The inhibitor of El's powers, copper, would be the enhancer of Will's powers. As a strong conductor of electricity, copper would perfect sense as something that would enhance Will's powers once he is able to use them in the normal world. Perhaps this is what will allow him to channel his powers and save the day. More on that below.
Let's focus now on water, the inhibitor of Will's powers if it enhances El's. One thing that's well known about the UD is that there is no water there. That's always been interesting and unexplained. If Will did in fact create the UD (or shape it into the UD the characters interact with in the show), he subconsciously made sure to exclude water, something that would dampen or inactivate his powers. It's been hinted at multiple times by the ST official twitter (especially around S4) that "water is dangerous" or there's "no water available" or there's a lack of water overall. Why specifically focus on this when it didn't impact S4 much?
How Will This Play Out in S5?
From the teaser that dropped last week, most of us have noticed that Mike and Will are both shown to be fully drenched while all the other characters are bone dry. While Will's isn't clearly visible in the screen cap from the teaser, there was a pic posted on the ST official account of Will soaking wet that has since been mysteriously deleted.
Tumblr media
While we don't have a lot to go on for S5 yet, we do know that Vol 1 will include episodes 1-4, and Vol 2 will start with episode 5, meaning episode 4 is going to end of some kind of crazy cliffhanger. What better cliffhanger than Will realizing he has powers? 5x04 is titled "Sorcerer."
From the teaser, it's clear Mike and Will will be spending most of the season together. It's been theorized that they will go into the UD at some point on a solo mission. We know from S4 that there is a gate to the UD at the bottom of Lover's Lake, which the older teens use to travel to the UD by swimming down into the gate. It's possible that Mike and Will use this gate to enter the UD at some point in 5x04.
Tumblr media
Once back in the UD for the first time since he escaped from there in S1, Will could experience a resurgence in his powers. Being back in the UD will likely also cause Vecna to realize Will is there, and he will be an easy target. Will and Mike make their exit back through the gate in Lover's Lake, but as water dampens Will's powers, it may be even more damaging to him now that he's just realized his powers. He may go unconscious underwater and Mike may have to drag him to shore and revive him. It may be the reason Will seems to be unconscious or "out of it" in the screen cap from the trailer (above).
Tumblr media
It's likely some part of this "power's realization / unconscious Will / Lover's Lake gate" will be the cliffhanger between Vol 1 and Vol 2. When we pick back up with 5x05, Will, Mike, Joyce, and Holly's friends seem to be at some sort of military checkpoint or base. The teaser shows the military have tried to close up the rift (with metal) but something is breaking out of the UD, possibly following Will (and Mike) after they escaped from the gate in Lover's Lake.
Tumblr media
It's also important to note 5x05 is titled "Shock Jock," possibly a reference to electricity and Will finally using his powers. After being weakened by the water in Lover's Lake, perhaps something (copper? metal?) is able to enhance Will's powers, allowing him to finally manifest his powers in the normal world against whatever monster is breaking out of the rift. It may even lead to the infamous shot of Will from the end of the teaser (below). If he's unable to fully control his powers, he would want Mike and Joyce far away from him if he's fighting the UD monster with electricity.
Tumblr media
As a last note, it's also important to bring up the final showdown with Vecna. While this won't just involve Will (El will likely be there too), the show does start and end with Will. Vecna came for him first. He was specifically targeting Will in 1x01. Will is going to have to fight him. Back in S4, there was a flashback of Henry Creel becoming Vecna, in which he is absolutely fried by lightning. While this wasn't Will at the time, it's possible this was foreshadowing to what will defeat Vecna once and for all.
Tumblr media
After all, lightning starts fires, and it's been shown time and time again that Vecna and the monsters of the UD can be stopped by fire. Will's speciality is casting fireballs, so it's likely his powers will be a major contribution to the end of the UD and Vecna.
While much of this is simply speculation, there is a good amount of strong evidence that suggests Will is going to have powers in S5, and electricity seems like a plausible choice. It's also worth mentioning that on Mike's official playlist, the song "Are Friends Electric" is listed, which could be a nod to Will's powers. It would also support Flickergate, for all my insane theorizers out there!
Edit: I realized @threemanoperation has also theorized something similar here. Please also go read this analysis!

One of your posts mentioned something about viktor not truly acknowledging Jayce's workload when it came to him being a Councillor. Could you please elaborate on that?
Sure. I mean, maybe if I went back through and did an exhaustive rewatch, I'd find something to contradict the point, but as far as I can recall, the closest Viktor ever comes to saying that Jayce might be overworked is when he calls his time going over the shipping manifests for the Hexgates a waste of time because they should be working on innovations to help people in need (ie, Viktor obfuscating once again that he is dying and wants Jayce's urgent help but framing it in such a way that it sounds like a long-term societal problem instead of a short term personal one, so it goes right over Jayce's head).
And look, let me preface this by saying Viktor is actively dying at this point. He's sick, and in pain, and terrified, and he feels abandoned by the most important person in his life. I'm not saying it was wrong of him to not acknowledge Jayce's workload, or bad, or in any way not understandable. Jayce is an adult too and Viktor was definitely suffering more at that point than him.
But on one of many rewatches, I did note that when Jayce says, "Sorry, I have a lot on my plate lately." it is objectively true. And Viktor doesn't even acknowledge it. Being a full time councilor and promoting Hextech and working in the lab and trying to help Viktor and dealing with a civic crisis that could lead to outright civil war, etc etc everything else happening in S1, it's no wonder Jayce is snippy and on edge at the bridge, the guy should be on the edge of collapse quite frankly.
And Viktor doesn't care. He thinks Jayce's time on the Council is a waste of time, so he doesn't acknowledge the burden of it. That includes not acknowledging the fact that the Hexcore would have been destroyed and Viktor's one hope for a cure gone with it if not for Jayce's power and influence now. Jayce only became a Councilor to advance their research and help Viktor, but Viktor doesn't once acknowledge this and seems actively angry and jealous about it.
By the way, this isn't a case of one of them is right and the other is wrong, it's just a case of two very human people being human. It's very well written. But Viktor's lack of empathy for the challenges Jayce is facing means he's also not seeing how much of what Jayce is doing is for his benefit, how many burdens Jayce is taking on for Viktor's sake.
Viktor's emotional arc at the end of S1 includes a lot of feelings of abandonment by Jayce which are objectively not true. If he acknowledged Jayce's workload, he might also come to the realization that he's not abandoned, that Jayce is entirely focused on him just in different arenas. Maybe it would give Viktor the impetus to say "Hey, I don't want your help as a Councilor, I want your help in the lab because I'm scared and alone and dying and I'm about to make some very rash decisions because of all those feelings." Instead of just sucking it up and going it alone, which eventually leads to Sky's death and Viktor's collapse into utter hopelessness and resignation towards his own death.
And by the way, this isn't conjecture that Viktor is bad at seeing how much people around him care for him. Sky is another example of this. Viktor is so focused on extending his own life that, to paraphrase Heimerdinger in 2.07, he's not using the time he has to be with the ones he loves.
Later he will weep and rage at how he completely missed out on knowing Sky as a person, he completely missed out on knowing she cares for him. He'll craft an entire specter of her to keep him company as a result of this guilt in S2, because he can't live with the guilt of the fact he objectively missed out on spending time with the real woman when she was alive. And that is another version of what he's doing to Jayce in S1, by not seeing that Jayce isn't ignoring him, he's desperately trying to help in every way he can and the workload is burying him.

Love your writing oh my days,
May I please request some more misty x butch reader?
I'd love to see how you'd write really pervy misty,, like s1 realness. Maybe along the lines of reader comes around to Misty's house to help with removing a tree that fell during high winds, out of the goodness of being a friendly/helpful neighbor. Chopping it with an axe on a hot day, only a singlet on while Misty secretly watches through the window,, maybe even taking some photos idk... reader coming in for some water, all sweaty and misty comes downstairs from watching and all flushed in the face,, and reader innocently just brushes it off for it being a hot day
she's been on my mind nonstop <33
-🦇
Tumblr media
ty ty! i have another misty x butch reader in the drafts but my brain hasn't been working lately....
· · ⎚-⎚ · ·
misty quigley butch chaser. it's real. you know she has tabs on all her neighbors, and when you moved in, she kept an extra watch on you. even set up cameras in your yard that you still haven't found :)!
you two are kind of friendly with each other?! usual neighbor friendliness yaknow, but if you ever need anything urgently, you always go to her house. and maybe she's the one who stole said item just so you'd come over, but you'll never know. she usually tries to keep you longer, and sometimes her touches and sweet voice work on you and you guys end up enjoying a nice drink together, but you take your thing and leave, telling her that you'll drop it off the second you're finished using it.
i know she was praying and praying that the tree would fall down lmfao. she would see it sway and hear how it'd crack during windy days, and she almost did the work herself because she knew you'd come over and help if she asked, but the wind beat her to it. her first thought after it fell wasn't that it almost crashed into her living room, it was you coming over and her being able to watch you help her out.
once it's safe enough to go outside, you're surprised at how messed up everyone's yard looks. just toys, trash, and branches everywhere. and it's fucking hot as balls now. no wind to cool you down at all. then you see a blur of pink and blue, and look across the street to see your neighbor, misty quigley, waving at you. your heart skips a beat at the fallen tree in her yard, and you immediately rush over to ask if she's alright. she doesn't even look phased, she looks cheerful actually, and she doesn't even mention it when she begins to speak to you, just asking about your day. you kindly offer to chop it down for her, telling her that you just need to go home really quick and change into something more comfortable since it's blazing hot outside, and she's already drooling and rubbing her thighs together at the thought.
she gives you That Look when you knock on her door with your axe, and it's awkward as you wait for her to look you in the eyes. eventually she lets you in, inhaling your sweet scent and subtly touching herself down there before she closes the door and follows you. you place down your hat and axe and ask her if you could use the bathroom real quick before you start working, and she eagerly shows you where it is. what about perv!misty who goes to the bathroom after you exit and start working, rubbing the towel you wiped your hands with on her face..
it's canon that misty records every corner of her house so of course she downloads today's recording so she can rewatch you out there for later. and for masturbation purposes.
she's able to sit on this wooden basket near the frontyard window and stuff her fingers in her pants while watching you!! to you, it just seems like she's protective of her house, maybe even a bit wary of you, but ohhhh if you only knew :)
misty who has audio in the cameras outside and plugs in her earphones to her phone so she can hear your grunts even better. taking screenshots from the surveillance on her phone and also taking perverted pictures of you. zoomed in on your ass. zoomed in on your biceps and stomach when she gets glimpses of it. zoomed in on your pits. she's just trailing after every single sweat drop she can see on your body, subconciously licking her lips while she touches her phone and admires you.
mistys gone when you decide that you need a break otherwise you'll pass out in her yard, and you quickly fix yourself something refreshing to drink. you feel disgusting and sticky as you feel the amount of sweat dripping off your face and back, and grab a paper towel from the rack to wipe it all off. surely misty wouldn't mind, right? where is she anyway, you think. you wander out into the living room, passing by caligula's cage and sticking your finger in his cage as you take another drink of water. he squawks out and playfully nips at your finger, making you pull back quickly. "ow! you little fucker." you moan, wiping your finger on your thigh and glaring at him. before he can squawk out an insult at you, you hear the sound of misty coming down the stairs and turn around to see her gripping onto the rail tightly as she walks down, a bit wobbly too. she huffs out and swipes at her bangs covered in sweat, swyaing to you with a slight frown on her face. "are you finished?" "oh. no. i just needed a break." you tell her, taking a long sip of your drink. "i hope you don't mind that i helped myself to some water." "help yourself to anything!" especially me, misty thinks to herself, smiling sweetly at you. her eyes wander to your sweaty neck, eyes lighting up with desire as she thinks about cleaning you all up with her tongue. you nod and awkwardly stand around, not knowing what to say to her next. it feels a bit unnerving with how hard she's staring at you, and you start to think you have something on your face. "is it hot up there too?" you mumble, pointing up with your finger as you bring the glass to your lips. misty cocks her head. "in your room? you're all... flushed, so i thought it must be hot up there." misty forces a laugh and shakes her head. her thighs still burn from riding her vibrating dildo while watching you on her laptop, the camera she angled perfectly in the front yard giving her the best view of you working. her lips twitch with want when she thinks back to how amazing and full she felt when she stuffed her mouth with another dildo of hers, imagining it being you throatfucking her with your packer.
thinkingg about misty who makes sure to rub up against said packer when you leave, hugging and thanking you for doing such a good job. it makes you feel some type of way, you even get goossebumps as her lips graze your ear.
and of course she steals your hat that you left on her couch! she took it and brought it up to her bedroom the second you went outside to start working, and she humped it. grinded her pussy and clit on the brim while going through the cam again later that day.

Thinking about this scene…
Inho making the choice to speak without his voice distortion is so meaningful, I think the reason why he did is because he wanted it to feel more sincere when he told Gihun that he should leave the games behind and get on the plane
You could actually hear a sort of tenderness in Inho’s voice when he said this to Gihun.
He’s letting Gihun hear his real voice again and then puts the distortion right back on (when the scene had continued in s2 ep1) after realizing that Gihun won’t let go of the games so easily.
Revealing your voice for the second time, to a player that won the game, even though it’s been shown that it’s a strict rule for the staff on the Island to not let the players find out any personal information about your identity.
Tumblr media
‼️Can we also talk about Gihun’s line here?
“That’s why… I can’t forgive you”
I didn’t know that people who watch others suffer and die in a brutal death game would need any forgiveness in first place?
Why is he telling Inho that… I always thought that Gihun must’ve sensed the Frontman is different from the people at the top, no matter how much Inho presented himself as someone who’s completely dehumanized, during their s1 limo scene. Gihun knows there’s a deeper motive, that he’s not there for the same reasons as the VIPs.
Rewatching this scene just makes their dynamic even greater, all these subtle implications that show how it’s always been personal between them. Either of them wanting to understand the other and this odd, unexplainable connection they seem to have right from the start, without ever even speaking directly face to face…

Mickey’s a bit of a fanboy. Paparazzi is too.
pairing: lt. mickey “fanboy” garcia x fellow wso reader [second person, no y/n – callsign: paparazzi]
warnings: probably inaccurate pilot/in-sky jargon, profanity, alcohol consumption, no beta / real editing, ambiguous ending…
word count: 1,974
a/n: I thought my overly-top-gun-obsessed days were long behind me (in the days of 2022/2023) but one of my two film classes said “NO! go back to hyperfixating on lewis pullman and danny ramirez in the midst of your james mcavoy obsession.” and here we are, folks.
[good god I went through a whole tizzy trying to figure out what exactly I wanted the reader’s callsign to be. “paparazzi?” no, that’s plural! “paparazzo?” grammatically correct, but solely masculine. “paparazza?” feminine-aligning in the native language but not everyone is solely feminine (myself included). I gave up and just went with the grammatically incorrect “paparazzi” because then it doesn’t have to be a gender thing – I already have enough trouble figuring out what gender I am, I don’t need this to send me down another rabbit hole. ... ANYWAY that was my little rant about the callsign. I have a whole list, because, let’s face it: are you really a top gun fan if you’ve never thought about what your own callsign might be?]
4/14/25 update: UM as of posting this, this was actually started a really long time ago and I kinda gave up on the ending so either it’s bittersweet and ends here or I can write a part two if anyone really wants it lmao… but i’m back to obsessing over romance games and mythic quest again so that’s a thing! I literally just finished my s1-s3 rewatch and started s4 right before I saw jessie ennis' story about how it got cancelled bro 💔💔

“Comms check. This is Paparazzi, filling in for Harvard, behind Yale. Yale, Fanboy, Payback, do you copy? Over.”
“Payback here, I can hear you loud and clear. Over.”
“Yale reporting for duty. Over.”
There’s a pause.
[paparazzi] “Fanboy, do you copy?”
[fanboy] “No, Paparazzi, I do not copy.”
[paparazzi] “Payback, tell Fanboy to check his comms.”
[fanboy] “Checking ‘em right now.”
[payback] “Fanboy, you can’t hear us?”
[fanboy] “Nope.”
Another pause.
[paparazzi] “He’s fucking with us, isn’t he?”
[payback] “...Yeah.”
You turn your head to the left to look at Payback and Fanboy’s F/A-18, flying parallel to your and Yale’s own aircraft. He’s already looking back at you.
“Sorry, Paparazzi. The opportunity was too good to pass up.” Fanboy’s laugh crackles over the radio as you flip him the bird.

“What a gentleman.” You scoff, knocking your knuckles on the back of Mickey’s blue-streaked helmet.
He clearly wasn’t expecting it from the way his neck gives way at the contact. You two walk side by side on the tarmac after the exercise with Reuben [Payback] and Logan [Yale].
“I hadn’t realized this conversation was suddenly about Bob.” He chuckles, before trying to knock your own helmet out of your hands by smacking it.
Your grip falters slightly but instead moves the helmet to rest against the side of your stomach furthest from Mickey.
“My tone would be different if it were actually about Bob. Not that I expect you to know the difference between jokes and seriousness.”
“I do, too! You play too much.” He says dismissively, as if actually offended at your comment.
˚⋆࿔༄ᯓ ✈︎
ᯓ ✈︎。༘⭒
“I play too much? Are you hearing yourself right now?” You laugh incredulously into your mask.
Fanboy’s F-35 flies somewhere slightly behind yours. You, Bob, Halo, and he are engaged in a pretty routine individual speed drill. Being WSO’s, you don’t get as much flying time as your respective partners, but still need the practice just as much.
“No, actually, I can’t. It’s pretty hard, since, we’re, you know, in planes right now?”
You roll your eyes behind your tinted visor – not like he can see it anyway.
“Break right!” Bob’s voice rings clear over the radio.
You see him, at the front of the line, start to turn, soon followed by Halo, who flies directly in front of you. Your gloved hands move along the plane’s controls to follow the two of them.
“Leaving me on heard? Real cool of you, Pap.”
Beneath your mask, your lips press themselves into a thin line. You bite your tongue for the time being, knowing you all need to finish the drill on time or Mav (and Hangman) would be on your asses about it. Fanboy’s taunts can wait.
“Break left!” Bob instructs. “We need to speed up a little, guys. Increase after the turn.”
All four of you follow suit. Turning left, then pushing the thrusters. Pulling G’s makes your body ache a little, your head feel like it’s under a weighted blanket (not in a good way!), and your stomach turn ever-so-slightly. Your mind goes blank, thoughts drowned out by the engines’ rumbling.
“Mark!” Halo calls, breaking you out of your trance. “We got two minutes, forty-seven seconds. Better than last time.”
The four of you slow and align into a horizontal line rather than a vertical one, now flying side by side.
“Good run, guys.” Bob says into the radio.
You can’t see his face, but you can tell he’s smiling when he says it.
˚⋆࿔༄ᯓ ✈︎
ᯓ ✈︎。༘⭒
You’re packing up your duffel bag in the common room, waving goodbye to Cassie [Halo] as she leaves, when Mickey exits the mens’ lockers and enters the room. You try ignoring him at first, but he initiates conversation regardless.
“What happened up there, Pap? Did pulling G’s fog your brain up so much you couldn’t come up with a decent response?” He sets his own bag down on the pool table as he folds one of his shirts.
“Stop saying ‘Pap’ like it’s a good nickname.”
“Doesn’t mean anything bad.”
“It sounds like a… fuckin’ pap smear or something.”
“That…” He tucks the shirt into his bag. “Oh.”
You roll your eyes for the “who-knows-how-many”-th time of the day and harshly zip your bag closed. The heels of your shoes resounded muffled clicks on the carpet as you went to leave.
“Hey, wait, I, uh, I know I’ve been particularly annoying today,” Mickey stutters over his words as he throws his bag over his shoulder and runs to catch up. “But do you wanna go to The Hard Deck?”
“So you’re aware of it?” You scoff, continuing to walk towards the door – click clack, click clack.
He chuckles sheepishly, now walking at your side. “Maybe a little. But really, you wanna come with me?”
“And why should I?”
“Because… Uh…”
You hum hesitantly. He hums eagerly back. There’s a moment of silence before he breaks.
“I’ll pay?”
The footfalls finally stop as you both reach the door.
˚⋆࿔༄ᯓ ✈︎
ᯓ ✈︎。༘⭒
And that’s how you end up four beers deep at The Hard Deck, sitting across from Mickey at a small table on the outside patio overlooking the beach. The sun’s gone down a long time ago, the brisk, salty air is chilling the tips of your nose and fingertips, and your beer bottles are empty. You and Mickey sit in a quiet, slightly-drunk stupor together. Looking at the ocean together only furthers the warm feeling that pools in your stomach from all the alcohol.
“I’m gonna go pay now, be right back,” Mickey’s words slur together slightly as he stands up and takes his wallet out of his pocket.
You hum in acknowledgement and slump down, arms folded over the table and head resting on top. The door opens, then shuts, as you hear Mickey go inside. The cold air prompts you to close your eyes – for just a second. Or, at least, what feels like a second.
When you open them, you’re met with Mickey’s curious and playful gaze. His face is still relatively far away from yours but you make eye contact because he’s leaned down to look at you. It’s almost as if you’ve grazed hands or held onto an embrace for too long. He smiles, in a surprisingly meek fashion, before gently nudging your arm.
“Wake up, soñolienta.” [“Wake up, sleepy.”]
You hum, before sitting up. The beer bottles are all cleared from the table and the bar is mostly empty, like the patio had always been. Penny stands behind the bar, wiping the counter. Jimmy sits across from a young man at a table on the side, talking while drying now-clean glasses. A few random customers are dispersed around the edges of the room but whatever party had been in the room earlier was clearly over.
“Thanks, Mick.”
“No problem,” he responds softly before going back to sit down in his chair on the opposite side of the table.
There’s a comfortable pause.
You rest your chin on your hands. “You’re actually kinda nice when you choose to stop being so damn annoying.”
“You too.”
You both laugh, another bout of warm silence – contrasting the chill of the sea air – following soon after. Your eyes lazily trace the surroundings. Where the sky meets the sea; Where the sea meets the sand; Where the sand meets the patio. The sand bleeds onto the sun-bleached wood. The patio meets the rest of the building, its sliding-glass doors, and the warm-toned LED globe lights that are suspended on the overhang (you and Bob had gotten into a pretty interesting conversation about lights with Penny, the two of you eventually convincing her to buy LEDs instead of using the old incandescent bulbs she previously used). The few speakers that are attached to the underside of the roof’s overhang play some random radio station. The tune doesn’t sound familiar, until the first song ends and a new one starts.
“Hey, I like this song,” You mumble absentmindedly.
Mickey perks up upon your mention of the music – he pauses to listen with you.
“Is this Djo?”
A surprised smile sneaks its way onto your lips.
“You know Djo?”
“Duh,” He teases. “Who doesn’t?”
“I’m just surprised. I don’t know what kind of music you listen to, besides the stuff you post on your Instagram stories,” You chuckle. “Which is mostly rap or really random hype music.” [shoutout to the danny ramirez instagram follower gang, his stories make me giggle bc he’s just such a boy and always posting about the miami canes and random selfies and stuff – I feel like a lot of danny’s personality bleeds into his characters (joaquin torres especially) so I tied this in with mickey…]
“I gotta keep up appearances, you know? Can’t be posting random pop and alt when people want the manly…” He motions around aimlessly with his hands while he looks for the words. “Hype stuff. I don’t know.”
“Sounds to me like you just don’t want to admit you have any semblance of decent music taste.”
“That is not true.”
“You’re a dork.”
“Says you, dork.”
“I can tell a lot of thought went into that. Great comeback.”
“Too bad you couldn’t come up with one when we were in the air.” He raises his eyebrows and cocks his head slightly in your direction with a toothy grin.
“Whatever. Just let me enjoy the radio in peace.”
Another eye roll added to the count. And yet, you can’t help the slight upturn of your lips as you look away in an attempt to seem aloof – key word being ‘attempt;’ it doesn’t work.
“I actually really like ‘Go for It,’” Mickey suddenly says.
His admission is another pleasant surprise.
“Damn, maybe you are a real fan.”
“It’s all in the name, sweetheart.”
You try to ignore the way your heart leaps into your throat at the nickname, a slightly flustered scoff working its way past your lips. The beer still sits in your stomach, but instead of providing warmth, it now feels stagnant. You glance over at Mickey as he checks his phone for a moment.
Was he always this cute? Or is it just the way he stands out against the night sky under the yellowing light? The way the outer edges of his eyes are threatening to press together as a content smile sits on his closed lips? It could just be the fact that his mouth is closed, for all you know. You don’t know, but it’s making you rethink everything. It’s… not a great feeling.
He must notice your smile drop as you space out, staring blankly in his direction, because he turns his phone off and looks back at you.
“You okay, Pap?”
Shaken from your daze, your jaw goes slack for a moment before you press your lips together and turn away. Your ears barely register the nickname.
“Oh, yeah, sorry, just… thinking.”
Mickey quirks an eyebrow. “About what?”
“You.” Is what you want to say.
The name of the song he mentioned seems to mock you. ‘Go for It?’ Yeah, right. You’d settle for biting your tongue instead of dying of embarrassment right here on the beach.
“Just work stuff,” You shrug it off – it’s technically not a lie if you’re thinking about your co-worker.
Mickey hums in understanding. “I get that. I feel like work follows me off-base, home, more often than I’d like.”
You glance back at him now. His face is to the ocean, so you only see his side profile, similar to when he was on his phone. Any semblance of the smile he usually wears is completely gone. His sobriety is… sobering, to say the least. It’s not often he drops the jokester persona. It almost tugs at your heartstrings a little bit.
“You wanna talk about it?” You tread lightly.
Mickey pauses. “Nah, it’s okay. Just tired right now, I think. Just… ‘work stuff.’”
You both chuckle halfheartedly at that. The sea air grows stale as the silence grows.
“I should, uh, get home,” He suddenly clears his throat and throws his hoodie on.
A sense of panic arises in you as he finishes tugging the grey material down his torso. Say something or let him leave.
Say something? Or let him leave?

mike’s behavior shift & byler endgame confirmation
little yap moment (long rant):
just to start, i wanna say that i was a m*leven lover from s1-s2. given i was young asl, it was a wonderful ship for kids, but as i’ve grown and gotten more into analyses for media it has become clearer to me why my dislike of mike wheeler’s character despite my love for him originally, actually came from a lack of understanding.
so yeah, i truly think the moment i started developing my own byler agenda was in season 3. i had always known that will was queer, season 1 episode 1 with joyce and episode 4 with troy, it was just so clear to me. but i never saw it actually developing into a love story, i actually saw it as a little bit of queerbait when i saw the “crazy together” scene (ik crazy to say but i was also literally 11). but season 3, was like a huge smack in the face that oh mike is 100% the queer one WITH some kind of feelings towards will. i love how we as bylers joke about it? but truly will’s feelings for mike were so masked it’s insane to me.
back to my rant, i was a little caught off guard by mike’s CRAZY behavior switch from likable friend and leader to el’s personal make-out buddy and actual hater of his own best friends (mind you mike was always my favorite character originally, he was the protagonist that was a little unlikable but that’s my favorite kind of character). it wasn’t until my rewatch recently that i totally clicked for me again that mike was so in love with will, i can’t remember who mentioned it but mike inviting will to his house after el dumped him was absolutely unnecessary, lucas was needed but mike just had will there because of his genuine need for will to be there. rain fight outburst and post breakup crawling back to will was so clear that mike valued will on a level unbeknownst to anyone else around him. even beyond the el breakup, mike is lowkey such an ass to everyone else 😭. he needed to be guided by everyone else to apologize to el, lucas, and dustin. but will was like air to mike, he breathes will, the second he hurts will, he immediately crawls back to him because he knows at the minimum that will’s feelings are greater than his own arrogance.
and now season 4? there are so many wonderful analyses out there regarding mikes straight up queer behavior, but i really feel like this season is what fully converted me. btw i was still afraid of this possibility of queerbaiting, i had a strong feeling that maybe i was still reading into it too much but when will’s feeling were CONFIRMED in the first like minute, i knew in that moment that byler endgame was real. like i said above the way will’s queerness was clear to me was no shock, but seeing it be visually shown that he was IN LOVE with mike i was truly convinced in that moment that this was it, they were setting them up to be THE endgame couple. (ps i had NOT interacted with any byler content until very recently, i just had this instinct). and after now having read the analyses and rewatch the season again, i literally felt like my eyes were opened and like the show was spelling it out for us. the california plot line being the MOST boring without byler development, the fights and apologies, the heart to hearts, and van scene all just either fed my confirmation bias or proved to all audiences that this is what we need to be looking at. it is insane that season 4 has like 6 incredibly byler focused deep moments and there’s still byler doubt in my opinion. anyways yeah back to my original point the complete decline in mike’s character development the last two seasons completely confirmed it for me in my most recent rewatch. there was no reason to absolutely nerf his character like that, and if they do set up m*leven endgame, i actually will have lost respect for the duffers but also for my favorite character. but i have full faith that this show would not destroy everything it spent the last decade building up to.
TLDR: byler endgame is imminent and as a once byler skeptic and even m*levin fan, i cannot wait to see this story wrap up in season 5. i need the trailer, actually the whole season but the trailer will do for now.

Hii, not really a question but I'm rewatching s2 and I noticed a parallel between the "we like steve... but we don't love steve" and Nancy stammering quite a bit to say "I- I do" and Mike having a similar response during his fight with El. I don't really know if you or someone else had already noticed that but felt the need to say it
Dropping Byler Evidence Every (Other) Day Until Season 5
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . Day 32: Murray's Conversation w/ Jancy . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ .
@j-gvellthings hope u don't mind I hijacked ur ask to use for my post thing i just think this is uber interesting <3
Honestly, that whole conversation with Murray and those scenes could absolutely apply to Byler and Jancy at the same time. In some moments, I feel like what he says could actually apply to Mike more than Nancy.
Tumblr media
Jancy say they're "just friends" here ^^ and obviously,,, if you've watched literally any romcom or show with romance in, you'd know that if someone is a little two defensive about the two of them being friends, then the audience is supposed to imply that they could be something more than that -- which happens with Byler in S4, when Mike unnecessarily calls them friends. It's not in the same context obviously, but Mike takes it romantically.
Tumblr media
Murray also says that Jonathan and Nancy have 'shared trauma' which is apparently the 'real shit' (meaning the apex of the conversation and the most important thing). Now, this obviously applies to Jancy because they went through a lot and that's what creates this meaningful bond between the two of them. Steve does not understand what Nancy's been through -- Jonathan does. And vice versa i guess.
Byler also have this exact dynamic. Mike was with Will during S2 when all that shit happened - and the subsequent dynamic has shifted so Mike seems like the only one that really understands what Will goes through. They also both go through the same types of bullying, which is shown in S1.
Some examples of their 'shared trauma' dynamic are:
Will says that Mike shouldn't tell anyone else about his True Sight because 'they won't understand' - S2E02
Mike says that Will is quiet today and Lucas brushes it off, but Mike sees it as something deeper - S2E01
Will only tells Mike about D'art and Mike is the one to shout at the others and gets rid of his problem for him - S2E03
At the Snow Ball, Will looks at Mike when a girl asks him out, because he's so used to checking with him for things - S2E09
Mike asks Will if he's okay at the movie theatre because he's so in tune with Will's emotions surrounding scary stuff (they were about to watch a horror movie) - S3E01
I only really named ones in S2 because that's the season where Murray actually says that so I feel like it has more value when it's all in S2
Tumblr media
"Trust issues am I right? Something to do with your dad."
Obviously, we all know that Will's had issues with his homophobic father - so has Jonathan, so it can apply to both of them. Most of Will's internalised homophobia can be traced back to bullying which includes his father.
It is shown right from the beginning of the whole show that Lonnie calls Will slurs, and attempts to make him like things that any 'normal' boy should want. Jonathan counteracts this by telling Will that he shouldn't just like things because people tell you to and telling Will that it's much better to be a 'freak' than normal.
This homophobic bullying could arguably lead to trust issues for Will - his internalised homophobia from his dad is what is keeping him from telling Mike the truth. He's afraid that Mike 'won't like the truth' because of the things he's experienced in the past.
Now, the one where Murray calls out Nancy is way more interesting:
Tumblr media
"You. You're harder to read."
Nancy is of course, harder to read than Jonathan because she hides so much -- she's harder for the audience to figure out because she's in a relationship already. Even so, I think this applies to Mike even more than Nancy. We have Nancy's POV. We can often see what she's thinking and feelings, but with Mike, we haven't had his POV and private thoughts and inner conflicts since S2. For two whole seasons, there has been barely a moment of introspection for Mike. The audience has constantly questioned what the hell he's thinking and why he's acting this way.
It's simple -- he's supposed to be harder to read.
"Probably, like everyone, afraid of what would happen if you... accepted yourself for who you really are"
HELLO? I think when i rewatched this I was a little confused because the wording of this sentence does not really allude to Nancy's issues alone. She is, of course, afraid of accepting who she really is, but it's hard to see that as her main character arc. She's more afraid of leaving the safety of Steve, but this wording is just so oddly familiar to someone telling someone who's queer to accept themselves.
Literally Mike's arc - he's afraid of what would happen if he accepted himself. If he accepted himself - it would mean he realises he doesn't love El, which means he's failed her and has to break up with her. He might lose her if he accepts himself. Idk, the wording is just tooooo suspicious to just apply to Nancy here.
"retreated back to the safety of... Name?" "Steve"
This is kind of insane UM,,, so Nancy uses Steve as her safety blanket because he's a well-respected, popular person at school and has a lot of money, which is similar to her parents' situation. Being with Jonathan is the less secure option, but it aligns with her true feelings. Which means the audience should want her to be with the person she actually loves rather than someone she doesn't want to lose purely based on safety.
Mike literally does this returning to the safe option thing 3 times in the show...
Mike slowly realises that meeting Will was the best thing he ever did, not meeting El, not helping her etc. This happens over the course of S2, and Mike accepts that El is gone, placing her in the same category as Bob when talking to Max. When El comes back, he's torn between the two, and we can see this dilemma in the Snow Ball scene. Will is off with someone else - Mike is questioning why he's feeling like this and what he should do - so he sacrifices his true feelings for what he feels is the greater good and what he should just do, which is to stay with El.
At the end of S3, Mike realises something and is scared of what this could mean. He realises that he has been trying to change himself too much over the course of the summer and just wants things to go back to the way they were. In S4, he attempts to cover up his feelings and push them down because he's afraid of what would happen of he accepted himself, and pretends to be in a normal, healthy relationship.
During S4, Mike realises that his relationship with El is something that he's insecure about, and often confides in Will about this. He alerts to Will that he should have 'explained himself' to El, rather than telling her I love you, implying that he doesn't want to say that ever. He agrees with Will that the truth could hurt someone he cares about. He's worried that El doesn't need him anymore, and is happy when Will tells him that she'll need him no matter what - but he still has to be encouraged by Will's words to say I love you to her. This is for the greater good - what he thinks will keep her alive and what he thinks she needs.
So again, Mike and El's relationship is built on commitment and safety - being with Will is the least safe option because it would mean having to look inside himself, accepting himself, and possibly losing El, who he still cares about.
"We like Steve." "Yes!" "But we don't love Steve."
This one's pretty self-explanatory and was the original point of the ask above - Nancy has literally in this season told Steve the words 'I love you'. You can say those words even when you don't mean it, the writers aren't that stupid to be worried that the viewers will suddenly go "OH BUT WHAT ABOUT THAT ONE TIME-"
But, obviously, before Nancy went off with Jonathan, the last thing she talked to him about was their argument about her not being able to say I love you to him - in that argument, when asked to tell him, she stumbles and goes "Really?" before they're interrupted. Then she can't say anything. She can't say it because it's not true.
Sound familiar? - while there are many more nuanced aspects to Mileven's scenes in S4, it is arguably similar to the Stancy's plot that Murray is talking about. Nancy 'likes' Steve, but her feelings aren't deeper than that. She cares about him, but that doesn't have to necessarily mean she loves him romantically. In the same sense, Mike blurts out "I care for you" instead of "I love you" during their argument.
Nancy stumbles over her words trying to deny it - which is the same with Mike when he gets confronted about it in S4, leading to him trying to gaslight and become defensive, using words like "ruin" and "ridiculous".
All I'm trying to say here is that the Duffers aren't strangers to writing a plot where a character is repressing their feelings and using a relationship as protection in order to hide who they really are. And the lines are written to be so non-specific that we can't ignore that they can easily apply to Byler as well as Jancy.

After rewatch, feel like Carmy knows Syd has every reason to leave him and invited her to the Ever dinner because that was his one last shot at trying to give her something he knows she deserves. It’s also the second funeral of the season.
The episode before Forever was called Apologies. He says he doesn’t want to be so hard to keep up with to Syd, but doesn’t elaborate and it frustrates her. His inviting her to Ever was a kind of apology for how he treated her, and he had to charm her and talk her into going!
Add in his remarks to Syd and Marcus about how he has to get right with everything and everyone in Legacy, which tells us we know he does understand what it takes and has been avoiding it.
He’s realized he will lose Syd forever if he doesn’t change. It’s why he gets hung up on apologizing to Claire as a start, because we saw at an Al-Anon meeting in the past, a woman went into very detailed remarks about how if you wait too long to say you’re sorry it gets stuck inside you. We also learn Carmy feels guilt about not doing more for Mikey in his convo with Cicero, unsaid things.
Syd wanted to be seen as his equal, and wants a star he can’t give her; and he knows now he can’t try to hold on too tightly because he did and it pushed her away. He went from hands off in S2, to tossing her a partnership agreement and never leaving her alone in S3, to ending up having to let go to start to work on himself. A sign, to me, that he actual does really love her more than himself.
This line from Carmy when he’s talking to Chef Terry: “It feels like I’ve been starting forever.”
Both Syd and Carmy are caught in a loop where they’re both repeating their pasts and starting over. Terry tells Carmy about herself at his age: “You have no idea what you’re doing, and therefore, you’re invincible.”
But Syd and Carmy haven’t done “the thing” they both agreed to in the alley in S1. Or even what they agreed to under the table. Not all the way yet. Which is where S4 is headed. It’s the place left for them to go that requires the real emotional commitment and vulnerability.
Syd doesn’t just need Carmy’s collaboration on dishes, or even his full focus (she got a version of that in S3 which sucked big-time). She needs to feel safe opening up to him about what she wants from him as a partner. She’s going to have to give up ignoring her needs and prioritizing everyone else.
While it’s obvious to everyone Carmy needs Syd when it comes to running the restaurant, he definitely needs to show up for her emotionally and not just keep making it about himself. Which the show tells us he already knows he has to get right with everyone - clean up his side of the street.
Them listening and looking at each other up close is the thing that they’re both afraid to do. Syd making the margins wider but not telling him her real feelings is nice, as Carmy says, but not the truth of her.
Which, it is going to be messy, because they’re not on the same page right now.

Welcome to the use of blue and green with 911 couples is not confined to clothing and how I believe this applies to buddie since season 2, a masterpost. (this does contain an explanation of the use of blue and green in the more obvious way, the clothes, so even if you don't believe the other elements of the scene part, this could still bring some clarity on the way blue and green is important)
Okay, so, after 706 a lot of people said they thought about me with the buddie/bathena blue and green scene, and I LOVE THAT, but a few people also came to ask me to explain more about the blue and green in general and why that is important and I realized my blue and green thoughts are scattered into multiple posts because I did figure out more stuff since I wrote the first one and season 7 is giving me more things to support the 2 main color theory theories I have when it comes to buddie/Buck, so I decided I need to write one long post about it all, including thoughts on 706 specifically.
Okay, so easy pattern to spot first, the blue and green thing is used with a lot of couples throughout the show, core couples, adjacent couples, random people in calls, the blue and green is used in a major piece of clothing in a couple, a shirt, a jacket, a dress, after s6 the use of pants was introduced more explicitly, and that has transferred to s7, but it is something heavily used since s2 (I can't find a conclusive example in s1 and the first obvious example is madney's first scene in 206) (this will have a bunch of tiny images because I'm trying to stay within the image limit, but if you click on them you can zoom in if tumblr doesn't decide to hellsite, I made them high quality enough)
Tumblr media
And it is not just about meant-to-be couples, it's literally just a way to exemplify romantic connection. And while it is used a lot with most of the couples we see, the easiest couple to track is madney, since they have a lot of blue and green scenes, tracking back all the way down to their first scene, but bathena also have quite a few scenes. I love the scene at the station in 308 (last column, 3rd row down) because the cutout of kid Bobby makes it so there's a double blue Bobby there.
Tumblr media
So the clothes element is very easy to track. It is a very real aspect of the show. And that is interesting when you consider the actual color theory aspect of it, because blue and green are analogous colors, which means they are right next to each other in the color wheel, and that's a color scheme used to create a harmonious look, it's about cohesion, creating visual unity, and it is what this accomplishes, the couples look balanced even if we don't fully register why, they just naturally work well together and that translates even if you don't know color theory.
This is the part we know exists in the show, but the thing is, I don't believe the show only uses that with the clothes, and again, madney is the easiest way to track that.
I noticed this while making a 512 set for the hiatus rewatch since I was focusing on the scenery to pick the shots I wanted because something about that episode is that it is green in nature since it is a Saint Patrick's Day episode. But everything about madney that episode is blue and green even when madney isn't dressed in blue and green. Pretty much everything about it has blue or green elements.
Tumblr media
Maddie is wearing blue in the video, Chim is wearing green when he watches it, she's in blue while she's alone (even her hospital gown is blue, and that's not a common thing for the show), he's in green when he's alone, so we are still in the color scheme, there is a lot of green in the background that makes Chim and his vest stand out, we have green walls, that green bench, the blue red sox merch on the walls. But when they meet again, they are in neutral-colored clothing, contrasting with the background, and when Maddie tells Chim she wants to go home, both of them have blue and green shirts that are covered by a jacket, so the blue and green are not a focal point even if it's there, probably because they are not back in a place where they can get back together yet, and they are explicitly in blue and green in 601 when they do get back together.
They also did the whole make the episode blue and green with 706.
Tumblr media
The backgrounds are very blue or green or both, a lot of the people are wearing blue or green, Maddie's phone is green, Chim's car is blue, there is a lot of blue and green happening there.
Something else about madney being blue and green is that their house has a lot of blue and green decorations. So, I definitely wanna say that the blue and green are being completed by other elements of the scene.
Tumblr media
But I obviously have examples with other couples.
While doing the rewatch sets for 606 I noticed there are a few examples using Henren and other elements of the scene, 606 is also the episode that allowed me to include pants into this madness.
Tumblr media
The thing about henren is that they don't have a lot of blue and green scenes, the 2 we had before s7, because s7 did gave us a few more, are in when they decide on fostering and when Eva comes back the last time, but since their color palette is based on patterns a lot, I decided maybe I should expand my definition of what counted, that gives us one of the flashbacks, because Karen's pants are patterned in green and Hen's shirt is patterned in blue, they also have Hen in green pants for one of the dates and there's the blue lighting, there's the scene with Hen in a blue hoodie and the green background. So more elements of the scene were being employed there.
Another couple is Eddie and Shannon. I will be honest, it took me a WHILE to clock they had an explicit blue and green moment in the form of Chris' birth. BUT, looking at them season 2 and the flashbacks in Eddie begins, they have moments where Eddie is blue or green and Shannon has blue and green detailing, her jewelry, her nails, her car, background of a scene. Also when they are fighting about Eddie reenlisting, they keep switching holding blue and green stuff. Shannon has a blue cup, Eddie is holding a green bottle, the rag on Eddie's hand is blue, the oven mitt next to Shannon is green, so even though Shannon is never a fully blue or green character, she always has blue and green accents.
Tumblr media
Randon addon, but Thomas and Mitchell, the gay couple from Buck, Actually that is the couple that shows Buck what love is supposed to look like, they have a lot of blue and green details in their montage, the car, the driveway, the transition from a green cake to a blue cake, I just love that.
Tumblr media
Now that we have all of this established, let's talk blue and green applied to buddie.
So, using the established, just the top, point of focus of the outfit, buddie has 3 blue and green outfits, technically 4, but we will talk about the hangar later, because I have a lot to say lol, the loft scene in 613, the station scene in 617, the hangar scene in 704, and the dispatch scene, the street scene, and the wedding in 706 (I will also talk more about 706 later)
Tumblr media
One thing about buddie in blue and green is that they tend to have similar shades to past scenes with past love interests.
Tumblr media
I don't know why they repeated the shooting combo, I guess it's just because Taylor's greens tended to be less earthy than Eddie's usual shades, but, I was scrolling through bucktaylor blue and green scenes to see if I could find a match for the hangar, and I do think that works, but I was fully ready to go full delusional here and say Buck's hoodie in 706 matches Shannon's nails in 207, because they do, BUT, that one seems to be a double kill and I don't have to sound all that crazy, because it seems like it is a bucktaylor combo from 509 too (the lighting on the loft is obviously different from two scenes in natural sunlight, but they are similar enough)
Tumblr media
(Wait last minute addition that you don't know it's a last minute addition and can read more about here, but all thought s6, Buck and Eddie have matching blue and green phone cases, and the 706 scene seems to also somewhat match the shade of the phone cases from last season)
Tumblr media
And these are the explicit ones, I would say the 706 scene is even more on the nose since bathena are also in blue and green right next to them.
Now, for other elements of the scene tho, we can go back down to the beginning. As in the you can have my back any day scene.
Tumblr media
(Yes, I know the blue is because of the sirens, and it will eventually be red, but since red is such a prominent color for Buck, I can't really mind that all that much because I also have a color-theory theory that deals with the idea that Buck is red in scenes about doing the right thing about love and what more right for Buck than Eddie?)
But since I'm trying to stay within the image limit, let's rapid-fire some scenes here. If we ignore the uniform (I am choosing to because they don't have a lot of room with the uniform, it is what it is, and sometimes a scene will happen in the firehouse) Eddie is wearing blue after the tsunami and the will reveal, Buck's wearing blue after Chim goes after Maddie, Buck's wearing blue in the kitchen talk in 511 (and yes he's wearing blue because Taylor is wearing green, but he's still in blue), the shirt Buck has under the red jacket during the breakdown is blue, Buck is wearing something blue(ish) when they talk about the couches, Eddie is wearing blue on the poker date, Buck is wearing green on the cemetery. In the Carla scene, when Eddie shows up, they're not in the kitchen, and the backgrounds behind them are somewhat neutral. But funnily enough, it's only green behind Eddie there. (if you read my eddie fell first essay, you know I will die saying this is the moment that Eddie is done for so, love when an insane thought solidifies another lol), after the tsunami, we have green scrubs dude behind Eddie when Eddie sees Buck, even though most scrubs in the show are blue and everything behind Eddie is white, we have Buck and the blue of the tent, when they turn around, there's the green thingie behind Eddie and Chris, and the scrubs behind Buck are blue. Grocery store, the toilet papers behind Buck are blue and the outside along with the flowers behind Eddie are very green. Shooting, whatever that green thing behind Eddie is, Mehta's uniform, more blue uniforms, and a green medical person. 511 I just think are funny because Buck is wearing blue in the kitchen but everything about Eddie is white, and that's a fun contrast to the Carla scene and 517 is funny the way one side of Chris' room is mostly green and red and the other is yellow and blue and how Buck is on the green side and Eddie is on the blue (including his shirt). And the poker date, Eddie is in blue and the tables and chairs are green.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering using the pants, we also have the post-tsunami talk, the will reveal, and the 504 talk where Eddie has green pants on. Sure, the post tsunami talk, Eddie is both blue and green and there are no blue elements on Buck, but the will reveal, Eddie is both blue and green and the wall behind Buck is blue, and the 504 talk, Eddie has green pants and Buck has a blue hoodie on, considering the way the season 6 had the pants being in used with henren in 606 and with the girls from the oil well (both queer couples, I might add), I kinda wanna say that the 504 talk is traditionally blue and green lol
Tumblr media
We also have my Roman Empire, aka the cemetery scene.
Tumblr media
Because here's the thing, the sky is only blue behind Eddie and Buck is dressed in green. And also considering the way that they were being pretty consistent with Eddie being green and Buck being blue and the general breakup feelings surrounding the cemetery scene, the fact that bucktaylor switched colors mid-relationship, aka, when Buck tells her he kissed someone else, this is very interesting to me, because the colors in that scene feel like something that was accomplished on post-production, so they are like that on purpose.
Tumblr media
This is also something that is used in the gym scene in 705, because Buck is wearing a green coat and Eddie completes the blue and green with the towel and the bottle, and considering green is Buck there is something wrong color and Buck is beating himself up for lying to Eddie, the switch in colors when applied to Buck usually means something.
Tumblr media
With all this, let's talk blue and green in 706. Bathena is in 2 different blue and green outfits, the Buckley parents are in blue and green, bucktommy and buddie.
Tumblr media
The bucktommy blue and green is very interesting because for one I had to swatch the color of Tommy's shirt and also because when talking about the blue and green in general, the shades tend to match, so to have Buck in a very light mint green and Tommy in a very dark, almost black blue is... a choice, especially considering that bucktommy did match during their date in 705, and Buck is in green, Buck in green is never a good sign (meta on that here), and considering Buck switches colors during crisis, I'm curious as to why they already switched the colors for them, since green is Buck's breakup color.
And the buddie of it all, well, they spent the whole episode matching, literally with the costumes for the bachelor party, but they also stay in their blue and green combo for the duration.
Tumblr media
And to have buddie matching even in the bachelor party when the dude Buck is dating is there during the madney wedding episode is definitely a choice, even more, when you consider the way that Eddie is the one who is supposed to be the third wheel, in the costume design of it all Tommy was the one who was the odd one out, and considering the general married behavior buddie was exhibiting during the episode, it's a choice.
And since I'm already here, let's talk hangar scene.
Tumblr media
For starters, with this scene, we had a blue and green scene for buddie 3 episodes in a row, which is something on its own, BUT, I will say that I watched the clip of this scene before 704 aired and said "oh, buddie just went canon", because here's the thing, for starters they are in blue and green and Tommy is in shades of beige, so the color on their clothes is the focus, but they are not really the focus, and they do match, but we have to consider the way Buck is wearing a maroon hoodie under his blue and Eddie is wearing a black jacket over his green. That clearly meant some sort of development was coming they're just not fully there yet. For me at least. Because the show has Eddie in the army green armor and Buck in the red jacket of love, and to have Eddie in the army green but with something over it, not using it to protect himself is something, and Buck not being in his brighter reds is also something.
Tumblr media
To have this was very interesting for me, Eddie most of all because he's wearing black a lot and I have theories but I can't figure out why. But those are all colors used when Eddie is protecting himself and Buck is trying to understand something, so interesting. And then there's the actual dialogue of the scene "wait, you're not thinking about jumping ship?" "uh, no, I'm just, you know, keeping my options fluid." There is literally no more on the nose way to say don't jump ship than to literally have Eddie say don't jump ship. All that paired with the very obvious blue and green, definitely meant a plan was just set in motion for me.
I will link my Buck and the use of green and red again if you feel like reading more color theory theories. And also a theory about the use of blue and yellow this season.
Anyway, I think this is all, if you read this I love you 💜

simon's arc and growth in s3 was one of my favorite storylines and is one of the main reasons i like s3 so much.
in s1 we got to see the foundations of such a beautiful complex character - a boy who loves his family and those who have earned their way into his heart almost more than himself, loyal to a fault, vibrant and not afraid to make himself more of an outsider by standing by his ethos and personality.
and simon being his truest self taught the 2 most important ppl in his life their key lessons. sara now understands the gift of giving ppl second chances and wanting to hope they wont always fuck it all up. and wille learned everything from simon. how to love unashamedly. how to believe in yourself. how to look outside of yourself. how to speak your mind. how to forgive. how to live freely
idk i think there is something so missing in ppl who cant understand his character in s3 and maybe its a lack of life experience but knowing when you need to remove yourself from a situation that is destroying you and the ppl you love is important and real. he made himself so small to try and fit for willes life and that hurt them both, wille needed shining simon as much as simon did.
love is not always enough and simon was brave for recognizing that. for continuing to stand by issues and ideals that were deeply important to him. to recognize when his own actions were causing ppl harm. to continue to forgive and give ppl more chances despite being hurt but also knowing when he needs to put himself first
on my first watch of s3ep6 it something i couldnt stop thinking abt and i stand by it on a few rewatches, for someone so integral to everyone's personal growth bc he was that catalyst or lesson for them, he felt a bit forgotten. and i get there was a lot of loose ends to be tied up but im ngl he felt a little rushed/in limbo bc of it but i still think he had a full beautiful arc in s3. and the way ppl still damn him for every move makes me wish he had even more time to develop throughout esp s2 i wish everyone could see just how beautiful and complex simon is and how he is the base of everyone around him

Some Thoughts on Ekko (mainly TimeBomb centered)
I'm rewatching Arcane in its entirety right now and I'm on the episode "The Boy Savior." I'm about to spoil S2 a little bit for the sake of this, so leave now if you haven't watched. This is an unedited ramble btw so bear with me.
I just watched the part where Ekko was talking about the mural, the casualties that inspired it, and Jinx.
"Your sister doesn't work for Silco because she needs to, but because she wants to. That's just who she is now." (or something of the like, I tried my best.)
I think it's super heartbreaking when we hear that and then we see how he acts around her later. The fight scene with him and Jinx in S1 I feel symbolizes the way he still wishes he could, or possibly still does, see the innocence in her and the girl he fell in love with as a kid.
He even sees it in her eyes while he's beating the absolute shit out of her at the end of that fight. His eyes wide, and he stops hailing fists, and he sees Jinx's wide, almost fearful eyes. While he is distracted, she tries to blow them up, but within that moment, he got another glimpse of the girl he still somewhat thinks of fondly.
And now... for the spoilers.
HOLY SHIT THE ALTERNATE UNIVERSE FUCKED ME UP.
So basically he found a version of Powder who wasn't batshit insane and not a war criminal, and his true love for her shows, even if it's an alternate version. Even the song choice during that dance sequence stressed how much he wishes she were better and was still in love to an extent. We all knew that, but it's still so bittersweet.
I think that's so beautiful after this man tried to harden his heart, he ends up coming around to her. He says all of these things in S1 about how she cannot change, but then what Ekko goes through with the hexcore and the alt universe changes how he sees his Powder. He starts to have faith in her again and even tries to stop her from killing herself.
The feeling was never truly gone, he just had to save himself from grief and disappointment before it had a full hold on him. He did it so that he could move on with his life and did as he felt he needed to.
It's all about the thought of what could have been and the grief over someone you could have built a life with, had they been a better person. While he moved on from that for the most part, it resurfaces after the events in the alt universe. I suffer with this feeling on my own and the way it's portrayed with Ekko is so real and raw to me.
...
Anyway I fucking love him, headcanons coming soon Rosey <3
