my personal opinion on the nico vs zuko blorbo poll

i can understand if nico loses. he just probably isnt as nostalgic to a lot of people. but you need to understand. for queer kids who grew up reading those books like me?

reading HoO with nico already being my favorite character and then seeing that "oh. a boy can like a boy? that happens?" SAVED me. reading ToA with nico openly dating a boy and everyone being accepting of it? that shit was INSANE to me. little queer girl who didn't know what queer was but my first ever interaction was telling me that it was okay. and this isn't the case for just me.

nico already being my favorite character, now the only queer character, exposing me to solangelo and fandom and even tumblr. i wouldn't be here if not for that kid. i wouldn't even fucking know i was queer if not for that kid. do you realize this? i probably would've still liked harry fucking potter if not for that kid because i didn't know what 'transgender' was before nico.

that little shit who literally owns my soul made me be okay with queerness and be okay with myself being queer. i never hated myself for the sole reason i liked girls BECAUSE OF NICO. DO YOU REALIZE THIS. HOW MANY KIDS NICO SAVED.

nico can lose. but this is the queer website and if he's gonna lose, it better be by fucking 1% because no way is this icon getting beaten THAT badly.

just. i need you to understand what nico did. and understand what nico is GOING to do for SO MANY OTHER QUEER KIDS. his book comes out in less than 3 months. he's going to be in a disney show in a few years. as pjo becomes more mainstream than it already is, nico will save more and more queer kids who will accept themselves because, hey, my favorite character likes boys! why can't i?

you cannot fathom how insane it was to see queer people be so normalized when i first read the books. how insane it was to me that it was possible and okay and normal. it was normal. that was the big one. it wasn't just okay, it was normal. normal for me to like girls. that's why i accepted it so quick. so early. where so many people don't get that chance to accept it when they're still young and a teen, i got that chance because of this little gay son of hades.

i found real friends because of nico. found myself because of nico. found my mutuals and fandom and my identity because of this kid.

this may discount all that i just said but idek who zuko is. i've heard the name through friends but. never saw atla. never cared. guess it did some queer stuff towards the end? idk.

all i'm saying is that nico saved me, saved other queer kids, will continue to do so, and has had such a profound impact on my life personally that if he loses it better be so fucking close that one vote would tie it.

They fight and make up, they commit crimes and acts of heroism (often at the same time), they’re terrifyingly powerful, they all have so many brain cells but forget to use them, they have fantastic character arcs, and they canonically stayed friends for life after the series ended.

He was born before WW2, and spent 50ish years in a cursed hotel with his sister until his dad finally remembered their existence and got them out and into the modern world, where his sister was killed and he spent a year crawling around with McDonald’s, summoning ghosts to try to bring her back. A lot more happened also

Zuko: listen. he is the saddest boy. he got abused by his father, his grandfather ordered his death and his father agreed, his mother disappeared, then his father burnt half his face off and banished him. he is an emo king, he literally says once “I’m never happy.” he is so sad that it makes him mad which makes him sad. he literally spends like 70% of the show in terrible circumstances (banished, then refugee, then back with his abusive father) being miserable about it.

the zuko vs. nico di angelo blorbo poll is absolutely baffling me. i know, i KNOW the impact atla has had on this site. but i also know that percy jackson/heroes of olympus was the gateway to fandom proper for so many of us, and among people i've talked to nico is a household name in the hall of first blorbos. WHERE IS YOUR LOYALTY. at the time of this post nico stands at 25% on that poll. this is a pathetic turnout. listen. i can accept if zuko wins. what i will not settle for is for nico to lose with this much of a gap. this nerdy emo child did so much for multiple generations of people coming into fandom due to character development, personality, and he was one of the first visibly queer characters in popular books intended for younger audiences. a hell of a lot of people clung onto those things, so where are you now? pay some respect to your goddamn roots

Random thoughts regarding different fandoms:

(I've seen/read these, I just don't engage with the fandoms that much. These are just thoughts based on what I have seen of the fandoms.).

Death Note: Endless memes. Constant poking fun at all the overthinking going on. Putting these dramatic characters in goofy scenes about cake and friendship. The jokes never get old for me. I don't see much discourse, maybe an occasional conversation about whether or not Kira was right. 😆

ATLA: Zuko getting teased. Kataang and Zutara battling it out while Zukka laughs and slowly rises higher, taking more and more people as it goes. I'm not that interested in the ships, but Sokka ships are the best. NATLA wins the "not as bad as you could've been award" and "the effects were decent". Lots of fun analysation.

Percy Jackson: I feel Nico is a fan favourite. The main discourse I've seen for the fandom as a whole is whether or not Annabeth treats Percy well and whether or not Piper is annoying. A lot of people compare Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (the characters), and those who have read both seem to agree Percy is better. Like ATLA, there's a new live-action series that is a mixed bag, but much better than the old, horrible live-action movie (and sequel) in the past.

Zelda: DOWN WITH KOROKS vs STOP KOROK ABUSE. Everyone loves Sidon senpai. Glory to Master KOHGA. Most of the stuff I see right now is BotW/TotK related, but there's still some good stuff for other games, as well as the AUs people do with different Links meeting. Midna is the best sidekick.

Hazbin Hotel: I'm wary since there's LOOOOTS of discourse in this one. The fans can be pretty funny, though. I love the song edits and that there's a whole ship tag for Vox's unrequited obsession with Alastor. I also like watching people analyse the characters and writing.

Helluva Boss: Well...I once again like watching people discuss the writing. But I am hesitant to engage with any fans because I have a weird relationship with this show and don't think I really qualify as a fan. 😅 I watch it because it's so bizarre to me I can't look away. One time I gave characters different colour schemes for fun, and I got a bunch of annoyed asks from someone taking it too seriously. 😆

She-Ra: Catra Applesauce Meowmeow is a poor little meowmeow. Cat. I like the cat memes. I also love the comparisons between Scorpia and Kronk. Entrapdak is probably one of the better ships, yet has haters for some reason. The accusations have the same vibes as Beauty and the Beast accusations.

Owl House: Tons of Lumity. Personally, I'm more invested in Eda and her relationships with the other characters. Belos and Hunter get compared to Ozai and Zuko. Hunter is very popular. Everyone side eyes Disney for what they did. HOOTY SUPREMACY HOOT HOOT.

Miraculous: The Adrien vs Marinette discourse makes my brain hurt, but I'm glad we all pretty much agree Astruc does everyone dirty. Canon? What's canon? Usually I like and try to follow canon. Not here. Who tries to follow canon in Miraculous? The fans write the show better than he does. Love all the fan comics I see for this show. Chloe could've been more interesting. We all make fun of Smooth-Brain Gabe. We came for the Love Square and then started to hate it. Then Emonette and Emodrien came and reignited our interest.
