“Your turn to flip the record,” Remus murmured, lighting a new cigarette— the muggle way, because it fascinated Sirius. The other boy groaned and lazily flicked his wand at the player. 

It was surprisingly warm for April, the windows of Gryffindor tower flung open to let the tepid air in. To no one’s surprise, James had led a group outside for recreational quidditch. Remus, exhausted from a week of classes, rigorous studying, and a grueling full moon, elected to stay behind. 

Sirius… well, Remus had decided not to read into why he stayed too. Or why Sirius had rested his head on Remus’s shoulder and not moved. Or why the beginning of Lady Stardust made his chest feel tight. 

Still, if Remus chose to ignore how rapidly his heart was pounding— and how fast Sirius’s was, for that matter— it was a pleasant, tranquil evening. It was just warm enough to wear a t-shirt and not be cold, but not so warm as to overheat from Sirius pressing against his side. Ah, here we go again, Remus thought, taking a particularly long drag to silence his stupid, traitorous mind. 

Remus’s breath caught as he turned to pass the cigarette to Sirius, who was already facing him, close enough to inhale a puff of smoke. 

“Sirius...” 

“Remus.” 

Close enough to kiss.

They moved imperceptibly closer, the smoldering cigarette forgotten between Remus’s fingers. The haze that seemed to have settled over the dorm suddenly cleared, and he was acutely aware of every sensation: Sirius’s hair brushing his collarbone, Sirius’s hand hovering over his leg, Sirius’s mouth. 

Remus was halfway to cupping Sirius’s jaw when the door banged open. 

“You will not believe what—” James froze in the doorway. They jumped apart faster than James could fly, probably. Remus’s face felt hot. 

“Ha!” James laughed. “Wormtail owes me ten galleons; I knew you’d be going out before the end of term!” 

“We’re not—” 

“We weren’t—” 

James didn’t listen. His triumph carried down the stairs as he went to collect his reward. 

“Well,” Sirius sighed, “I’d hate for him to be wrong.” 

Remus whipped his head around to gape at him. “What do you—” he began, but Sirius silenced him with a kiss. 

Oh, thought Remus, slipping a hand around Sirius’s waist, Yes, I’d hate for James to be wrong.

“I’ve come to think it’s worth trying.”

july 28: outsider pov | @wolfstarmicrofic | word count: 349

James Potter is not, romantically speaking, a complete idiot. In fact, despite all his shortcomings with a certain Lily Evans, he’s pretty damn good at spotting two people in love.

Not like his best friends make it very hard.

Remus won’t admit it, but Sirius is the only one who can make his tea right. Anyone else and Remus takes a sip to be polite, but leaves it go cold and untouched when he thinks they won’t notice.

“You act like it’s so difficult,” Sirius scoffs when James points this out. “It’s three spoonfuls of sugar, but the third one has to be heaping. Four makes it too sweet, even for Moony.” And James will shake his head, because of course Sirius knows that, and of course he acts like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

Sirius hates reading, says he doesn’t have the attention span for it. So when James crawls through the portrait hole, exhausted from Quidditch and struggling to keep his eyes open, he thinks maybe he’s having hypnagogic hallucinations when he sees Sirius curled up in one of the sofas armchairs with a book. Then he sees Remus on the sofa beside him and it makes sense.

Later, he catches Sirius reading— or pretending to read— with Remus again. At some point Sirius gets bored and closes the book. James watches over the rims of his glasses, waiting for when he inevitably begins distracting Remus to no end. He does start talking, inevitably, but only to ask if Remus could read it to him. Remus agrees, even though James knows he prefers to read on his own, says the words get all jumbled when he tries to read out loud. He tries anyway.

It’s the tea and the books and everything in between. It’s knees bumping under tables and tracing new scars after a full moon. It’s jealous glares they think go unnoticed and swapping stories about the past in the dark.

It’s so subtle, but it’s so obvious— sometimes so much James wonders if maybe he is a complete idiot after all.

It hadn’t been long since Sirius’s escape, and even less since he'd moved back into the flat. “I need a haircut,” he declared one day, so softly that Remus might have missed it if he wasn’t growing accustomed to this quiet, skittish version of Sirius. 

“Would you like me to do it?” Remus asked politely as he cleared the dishes. 

Something— panic, maybe— briefly flickered across Sirius’s face, but it was gone in an instant and he nodded.  

Sirius perched on the edge of the bathtub. Remus stood behind him, holding the shears. He was still tall and willowy as ever, but twelve years had been good to him, and it was without that old air of awkwardness that he leaned down. He had grown into his skin; it seemed Sirius had grown out of his. He hunched over now, and his skin had taken on a pallor that made his usually fair complexion only look sickly. And then, of course, was his hair, limp and stringy as if was perpetually damp. 

All of it made Remus want to hold him very tight and never let go. 

“How much off?” 

Sirius tugged a lock of hair over his shoulder and pinched it at different lengths before settling on a point just beneath his shoulder. “Here,” he said. It was how he used to wear it, Remus noticed instantly. 

It should have made him sad. It should have made him mourn the twelve years they lost, or curse the betrayal that made it so. And it did, deep down, but it was smothered by relief. This was a step towards normalcy— or at least a new normal, because things couldn’t go back to the way they were, but Remus supposed that didn’t sound so bad. Slow mornings and careful haircuts in their old bathroom sounded wonderful, actually.

When he was done, he gave Sirius a once-over, confirming that both sides of his hair were the same length. He nodded once in satisfaction, then hesitated. Now what? He flexed his hands that hung awkwardly at his sides. 

Sirius surprised him by wrapping his arms around his middle. Remus stood stiff as a board for a moment before he slowly, tentatively, held Sirius right back. He raked his fingers through his hair— already much lighter, the curls more defined— and exhaled. 

“Figure we should wash it next,” Remus murmured against his head, and Sirius hummed in agreement, so they did.

Things were not going well for Remus and Sirius. 

The prank set-up had been successful, obviously. Everything was ready to be triggered at a moment’s (or, more accurately, the moment Slytherins left the dungeon) notice. The only problem, then, was the imminent threat of getting caught. Things would be going smoothly if not for—

“That bloody cat,” Remus grumbled. Mrs. Norris’s grating meows echoed down the dark hallways, and a glance at the map confirmed that Filch wasn’t far behind. 

“Here!” Sirius hissed, grabbing Remus’s wrist and tugging him behind a tapestry. Remus was ready to object— hiding behind a tapestry, as if the cat couldn’t sniff them out, seriously?— but the wall opened up into a room. 

“Great, now we’re cornered,” Remus sighed, listening to the muffled yowls from the other side of the door. But Sirius wasn’t listening. They’d stumbled upon a densely cluttered room perfect for hiding— though if Filch’s pacing and apparently befuddled dot on the map was any indication, they were safe as it was. 

“I think we’ve found the Room of Requirement, Moony,” Sirius said. “Blimey, look at this!” 

Remus sighed, resigning to staying virtually locked in for who knew how long, and joined Sirius beside a dusty, tarnished mirror. “What’s this?” 

“Mirror of Erised,” Sirius replied, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I’ve heard stories about it. Didn’t think it was real, though. They say it shows your deepest desire.”

Remus frowned. It looked like an awfully ordinary mirror to him. His and Sirius’s faces stared back, the same as reality— his skin still scarred, his sweater still threadbare. In the mirror, Sirius turned and smiled softly, tenderly, at him despite it.

“Rubbish,” Remus declared. “I don’t see anything different.”
