As he flew around his assistants' garden. Algy realised that he was exceedingly tired. His Hogmanay Hootenanny had been one of the most wonderful parties he had ever held, but it had certainly drained much of his energy, and he felt that he needed a good wee rest before embarking on any new adventures.

The weather birds had been wrong again, and instead of staying dry for a change, it had rained all night. Not that Algy was surprised… It usually rained in the wild west Highlands of Scotland, after all, but it meant that everything was soggy, drenched and uninviting, especially as the temperatures was only a wee bit above freezing. It was hardly conducive to a restorative rest…

Algy hopped about here, there and everywhere, looking in vain for a cosy couch suited to a weary fluffy bird, until eventually he spotted a small clump of bright green cypress in a dark corner.

This seemed to offer a perfect bed, and when Algy lay back on the gentle, springy branches with their soft, fragrant needles, he felt a sense of deep contentment, for they were not even particularly wet. Here was a perfect place for repose!

Hail, sweet Contentment, calm Repose! The balm of comfort shed, Oh! let me not complain of woes, By thy kind guidance led! To thee Compassion is allied, Revengeful hope unknown; As thou a stranger art to Pride, From thee is Discord flown. Tho' plain and humble be my lot, Yet grant me strength of mind; So shall I find, tho' in a Cot, Pleasures the most refin'd. With pity shall behold the great, While no rude cares molest; Nor fond desire for useless state, Disturb my tranquil breast. In silent glen, in hollow cave, And Hermit's lonely cell, Where winding streams delight to lave, Reflection deigns to dwell. Far from the bustling scenes of Life, I wish in peace to rest; Remov'd from vanity and strife, In calm retirement blest. To me in gorgon terrors clad, Appear the rash and bold; The vain, the wealthy, and the bad, Who thirst for nought but gold. With horror such delights behold, As deck the festive scene; Tho' young, am prematurely old, Collected, grave, serene. To thee, Contentment, thus I bend, With meek and humble heart; In pity to my pray'r attend, And lend thy soothing art!

I love shipping characters who hate each other in canon.

I love shipping characters who have had exactly one (1) conversation in canon.

I love shipping characters who have never met in canon.

I love shipping characters from different pieces of media.

It starts off silly. The notion of the pairing is so weird, so unexpected and seemingly dumb that it makes me laugh a little, perk up, look into it and see if this is really a thing.

And then it becomes a joke. Haha, look at this ship I’m shipping ironically, isn’t it silly, it would obviously never work out in canon but I’m looking at it and producing content for it anyway because it’s fun.

But as time goes on, it starts filling my feed. I start thinking about it - really thinking about it. Why did someone put these characters together in the first place? How would they really interact? How did they end up together, and why would they stay together?

What started out as a joke becomes a diving-off point, an opportunity to really think about both characters. The dynamic isn’t canon, so it’s yours to shape. The dynamic isn’t canon, so now you must delve into each character on your own, figure out how you perceive and understand both of them, learn to see them in a different light. What started out as a joke encourages you to dig deeper, think harder, fall even more in love with those characters as you consider the potentials which lie outside of canon, but which ultimately trace their roots through the core of the characters themselves.

Because by their very nature, crackships and rarepairs are not based on plot, and they are not based on canon. They are so seemingly random and odd that they disrupt your typical view of these characters, making you think more deeply about them. The non-canon ships you embrace or reject can inform your perception of these characters on a deep level. They can make you cry just as easily as they make you laugh. They add so much flavor.

And they can also be really, really funny.

Ode to Snowy Mountains on a Winter's Day

Oh my! Look at the snow! See how the mountains and hilltops glow When the winter sun, So cold and low, Lights them up, With shadow below.

See how those barren rocks shimmer and shine, Adorned with a mantle, so white and so fine; With crystals that twinkle And sparkle with light: By sun or by moon, It’s a wonderful sight!

Look at that sky: a hibernal blue! On a winter’s day, that azure hue – A beautiful colour – Belies the chill That freezes the ground When the wind stands still.

For the wind drops down on a frosty night, With cloudless skies, and a moon so bright That shadows fall As though it were day: Then sensible creatures Hide away

In nests and hollows as best they can, For Jack Frost cares not for beast or man: The freezing touch Of his icy hand Sends careless folk To a better land…

So heed my warning, proceed with care: For angels wait for fools who dare To tread icy ridges Without concern: Some who try Do not return.

Admire the scene, and look at the show, When the snowy mountains and hilltops glow, And the winter sun, So cold and low, Lights them up. But stay safely below!

Ode to a New-Old Chair

O new-old chair, how happy I Will be upon your seat: Your sturdy back supports me well, So sitting is a treat.

Perhaps you’re not as shiny As the day when you were cast, But your patina is charming, And I’m sure that you will last

Just as long as I’m a poet Who performs upon the stage: For your strong and solid structure Is a comfort in old age

When my legs are tired from standing, And my feet are hurting too; It’s a pleasure then to rest upon A new-old chair like you.

I tried to like my other chair, But though I tried I couldn’t, Because every time that I sat down It folded when it shouldn’t.

I know its manufacture was Of very recent date, but It was made of flimsy plastic And collapsed beneath my weight.
