hi hi hi ceil! I hope you're doing well. My new year's resolution is to read more books, and I was just wondering if there were any you would rec? I really enjoy the stuff you right, and wondered where you get the inspiration from
hi hi!!!! im doing great actually, i had a nice day :))
oh i have SO many!! these are just my personal favourite and i read a lot of literary fiction and non-fiction and 'weird' lit, so hopefully something on this list sounds fun to you:
glass, irony, and god by anne carson [poetry - although i would recommend absolutely anything by anne carson]
half-light: collected poems 1965-2016 by frank bidart [poetry - honestly one of the poets you MUST read if you love poetry in my opinion - bidart, carson, dionne brand, louise gluck, paul celan, maggie nelson, adrienne rich, rainer maria rilke, t.s eliot, jan zwicky, kahlil gibran]
rings of saturn by w.g. sebald [literary fiction - unnamed narrator takes a walking tour of suffolk, england, and the book is about the encoded meaning found in everything; i love sebald so so much]
house of leaves by mark danielewski [architectural / weird horror; cult classic; spooky and eerie in the best way; high concept, a bit complicated to follow but worth it]
drive your plow over the bones of the dead by olga tokarczuk [fiction / thriller, a bit - read this last month and this book hooked me oh my god, it was so good]
severance by ling ma [apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic - possibly one of my fave books in this genre]
the overstory by richard powers [environmental fiction - multiple different narratives that sometimes converge, sometimes don't; truly had me weepy at points] (also, if you like environmental books, the golden spruce by john vaillant)
the complete cosmicomics by italo calvino [strange literary fiction, short stories - oh these are so delightfully strange and zippy and weird, they feel like eating starbursts or something!!!]
underland by robert macfarlane [non-fiction - this consumed me for days when i read oh my god. all about underground structures, catacombs, caves and caving, mines, radioactive waste disposal, etc]
the lonely city by olivia laing [non-fiction - a sad book, but still hopeful; she has such insightful commentary on art and queer history too]
the library at mount char by scott hawkins [weird fiction - so cool, SUCH a cool fun book oh my god. very interesting premise and executed to perfection]
some other names i'd recommend: eileen myles, maggie nelson, rebecca solnit, and ursula k. leguin (for your scifi/fantasy needs)

this might be an odd request but do you have any dc2 headcanons? Literally any character or ship, but only if you want to!!
not odd at all!! here are some hcs :3
first, of course, the queer hcs (of course, most aspec):
Tumblr media
not pictured, but to me, krystal is aroace, oliver is a demisexual bicurious aromantic trans man, and marcus and nina do not exist.
i see a bit of myself in riya in the way she rejects people and then gets villainized for it just because she's expected to end up with them, and also i think she'd have the "i'm too good for anyone" attitude which i absolutely fw. tess and lake are aroallo icons that we do not deserve but desperately need. kai is the funkiest guy in the cast and yk damn well i'm right about his labels. and also yul fucking sucks.
i have no ships besides jaiden, which is not very surprising since this cast has the least chemistry with each other. of course, that's not an indication of whether or not shipping them is valid, and also, the season 1 cast has a ton of chemistry and i only ship gabellie. (yes, out of this series that has given us a clusterfuck of so many ships, i only have two.)
i like to think connor has social media which he uses to give advice to youngsters he wishes he could've received at their age.
riya and yul have thrown their careers out the window and the show ended up damaging their reputations so much they can't get back in their respective scenes. also since grett is definitely going to break up with yul, i'll just throw in the hc that, after that, he'll just become more of a waste of oxygen than he already is and waste his life away. riya will probably be able to find an okay-ish job tho i have faith in my incredibly annoying evil wife.
rosa maria, lake and maggy all kept contact after the show and regularly went out. the friends ever me thinks.
kai applies for summer camp counseling and is the most beloved counselor everytime. he organizes the most fun activities and all the kids love him.
ally is a scene kid. i will die on that hill.
oh yeah also karol. she definitely is a character that exists.

Henri[mumbling]: Shit...my head....what the fuck happened last- [looks down] Well...fuck...
Tumblr media
Henri: Roads should be empty still...shit Aisha will never let me live this down if it comes out...and Mama would probably...I dunno send me off to Francesim or something...where are my clothes...
[A Couple Hours Later] Palais de Royal Rouge, Windensen
Tumblr media
Henri: Why's Mag's car in the circle? Oh well...I gotta find one of the remotes to the garage...why does Papa insist we don't have one in our car...
Tumblr media
Henri: Oh fuck...Maggie's moving to the University of Brichester....and since her car's out then she's up...fuck fuck fuck....at least she won't be gloating about it and may actually help me sneak in-
Tumblr media
Magdalena: Well thank you for waking up to have breakfast with me, but why are you of all people up at 6 am on a Saturday? Maria Aisha: I wanted to catch Queen Francesca of Saliceau's statement...I can't believe Auntie Bells is gonna be the next Queen of Saliceau but I feel bad for Princess Maria...she got duped big time by- Magdalena: Aisha, lets not speak rumors and give them more power. Especially about allies. Maria Aisha: But it's not a rumor its the- [Door shuts quietly and Henri tries to run past them]
Tumblr media
Maria Aisha: Well look what we have here Mags. Somebody is doing the walk of shame. Henri: Fuck. Magdalena: Henri, language and Maria Aisha, you can't say anything. If anything you should practice being mature.
Tumblr media
Henri: Just let her get it out Maggie... Maria Aisha: You clearly didn't come home last night and those clothes look like they were on somebody's floor...I take it Chiara's party was fun? Henri [sighing exasperatedly]: Yes. It was fun. You done? Maria Aisha: Not yet. Magdalena[disappointed]: Maria Aisha. Maria Aisha: So, you're so lucky Mama and Papa took breakfast in their apartment as they watched Queen Francesca's address. And you're also lucky that I'm not gonna rat you out...so you owe me Hen. Henri: Watcher damnit fine. I owe you...[shudders] you know I hate owing you Maria Aisha: Oh...I know. You thought of how you're gonna explain your car? cause...it's parked behind Maggie's... Henri: shit..
Tumblr media
Magdalena: You both are gonna help me move. Maria Aisha & Henri: WHAT? Magdalena: You two are gonna help me move...it's explains why Henri's car is where it is and it'll make sure that Aisha doesn't rat you out in the next 6 hours Henri. Maria Aisha: Ye of little faith! I wasn't gonna rat out Hen! Magdalena: I highly doubt that...now both of you..change and Henri...shower and then I'll cover up those bites with makeup Maria Aisha [teasing]: ooooo someone got sloppy Henri: I hate you Aisha...

the lovely @albonoooo tagged me to share my 10 favorite reads of 2023. oh boy, here we go.
so far i've read 61 books this year (which is below my goal grrr but whatever. when life hits you or something) so it's a tough decision. these are in no particular order:
once there were wolves - charlotte mcconaghy | a really haunting novel set in the scottish highlands revolving around a woman who is working on a project to rewild wolves to the area. the writing is brain-meltingly beautiful. please look up the content warnings tho!
middlegame - seanan mcguire | i do not know how to explain this one except it is absolutely brilliant??? about a boy and a girl with very special talents in language and maths, respectively (and they're not in love!). and like, alchemy and human experimentation. it's very weird but alas, i love weird books
girl, woman, other - bernardine evaristo | a beautifully interwoven story about the lives of twelve black British women (& other) that explores family and love in such a compelling way!!! it certainly didn't win the booker prize without reason
bunny - mona awad | if you like weird things this is the book for you. also if you enjoy unreliable narration, (toxic) female friendships and dark academia. it's a girl's right to be weird and slightly cult-ish
yellowface - r.f. kuang | i cannot make this list without mentioning r.f. kuang bc she is the loml. this book is not my favorite by her but it was certainly a banger, as always. if you're interested in topics of post-colonialism and systemic racism you should never miss out on her books
the deep - solomon rivers | magical alternate history about a mysterious mermaid population in a vaguely post-apocalyptic world. lovely portrayal of culture, (shared) memory and generational trauma
she who became the sun - shelley parker-chan | just another asian-inspired fantasy to add to my list of favorites because i just love them so much. this one was so fun and has queer and nb rep!!!
none of this is serious - catherine prasifka | i didn't really ENJOY reading this bc it kept calling me tf out the whole time. if you, like me, find yourself living in existential dread, the anxiety of a small rabbit being chased by lions, and a crippling social media addiction, this will be a fun one to get through
the raven cycle - maggie stiefvater | i've just finished my THIRD reread of this series in 5 or so odd years. yes it is that good. if you haven't read it GO NOW. it's ya but i promise it's not very ya-ish. paranormal fantasy / magical realism / legends and the most likable cast of characters you will ever see (did you say: where can i find ya books with female mcs that have a personality? the answer is HERE)
her body and other parties - carmen maria machado | i've never really read a short story collection before so this was an interesting experience. i loved some of them more than others but they're def worth a read, some even mind-boggling
sorry for rambling but if you truly expect an english major to not go on a rant about books you've been sorely mistaken
if you ever need book recs please feel free to slide into my inbox/dms i am a walking library
tagging @wanderingblindly @grubbyraccoonhands @drivestraight @maxcuntstappen and whoever wants to do it im not sure who of you reads books besides slurping down fanfic like its melted gummybears so uh.

The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act: An Update!
The US Senate bill that would let disabled & elderly people save more money while still keeping their Social Security benefits (and which is pegged to inflation so we don’t need to keep passing increases over and over!) aka baby’s personal favorite legislation of the 117th Congress, has a little update!
On 06/06/2022, the bill’s original sponsors, senators Sherrod Brown (OH Dem) and Rob Portman (OH Rep), were joined by two new sponsors, Senator Ron Wyden (OH Dem) and Senator Bill Cassidy (LA Rep). (Source: official congressional website for the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, also known as S.4102) The more bipartisan support, the better a chance it has of actually passing, so I’m excited!
Right now, it’s still in the Senate Committee on Finance. Keep in mind that Sherrod Brown actually introduced this legislation (or something very similar) in a previous year and it didn’t go through, but now he has Portman on board and Portman is going to get replaced in 2022, probably by a far worse Republican (fucking JD Vance, a massive capitalist who thinks welfare is Bad), so the time to get this passed is now! We don’t know what the 2022 midterms will bring.
Here’s all the current Senate Committee on Finance members, with links to their Wikipedia page. If one of these belongs to you, now would be a great time to call or send a letter! If you enter in your state on the official Senate site it will tell you their official Senate contact info. If you'd like to read the full text of the bill, I recommend it, it's very short, probably shorter than this post! I don't have a head count of who supports it at this point, but it wouldn’t hurt to let them know that they should! (I mean, I’m guessing Elizabeth Warren’s on board, lmao, but.)
DEMOCRATS on the Senate Committee on Finance
Ron Wyden, Oregon, Chairman - new co-sponsor
Debbie Stabenow, Michigan
Maria Cantwell, Washington
Bob Menendez, New Jersey
Tom Carper, Delaware
Ben Cardin, Maryland
Sherrod Brown, Ohio - original co-sponsor
Michael Bennet, Colorado
Bob Casey, Pennsylvania
Mark Warner, Virginia
Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island
Maggie Hassan, New Hampshire
Catherine Cortez Masto, Nevada
Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts
REPUBLICANS on the Senate Committee on Finance
Mike Crapo, Idaho, Ranking Member
Chuck Grassley, Iowa
John Cornyn, Texas
John Thune, South Dakota
Richard Burr, North Carolina
Pat Toomey, Pennsylvania
Tim Scott, South Carolina
Bill Cassidy, Louisiana- new co-sponsor
James Lankford, Oklahoma
Steve Daines, Montana
Rob Portman, Ohio - original co-sponsor
Todd Young, Indiana
Ben Sasse, Nebraska
John Barrasso, Wyoming

Idk if you were serious but just in case: the band in six is named after actual ladies in waiting of four of the queens- I believe the ones that announce them at the end (so Maria- Aragon, Maggie- Boleyn, Joan- Jane, Bessie- Cleves)
wh- 😳🤯😲 oh..ooooohhhh,. oh holy shit okay. wrow
but also lmao okay this is the kind of shit that drives me nuts about SIX lmao,. like. they clearly know their history. but also either they don't, or they don't care, and like, still play into old stereotypes or misconceptions about the era. So I'm like. 😃😥😯🤔😗🤨🤐😐😬🤤😴

I saw that you mentioned reading poetry, do you mind sharing any recs/suggestions?
oh this is tough because i'm not a good poetry reader. i think my education in it was very poor, so i'm trying to dip my toe in and having mixed results.
i do better with poets writing things that aren't strictly poetry, so i can give a mix:
Golden Ax by Rio Cortez - new collection i'm reading right now that has some longer line poetry that i find pretty powerful
Bluets by Maggie Nelson - an old favorite all about a love affair with the color blue. i found the thematic through line helped anchor me in this collection.
Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood - this is a memoir, but you can tell she's a poet by trade long before she tells you. very funny look at the weirdness of the catholic church.
Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov - this is a strange mystery/experiment that unravels around a poem by an imaginary poet and its post-humous commentary. the poem is written out entirely and pretty fun to interpret (not easy but fun!)
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson - novel in verse; modern retelling of Greek myth, crazy beautiful prose
Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino - a novel that is ridiculously beautiful in its prose as well
Also, i really love stuff that read aloud has a certain musicality, so tender buttons by gertrude stein (actual poem) and any of sandra cisnero's novels, especially if you can properly pronounce the spanish, because it tastes so sumptuous on the tongue.
And then, i don't know if these are good, but i'm planning to read the poems of adrienne rich, joy harjo, and rainer maria rilke soon.

Book recommendations? (Preferably short ones/ones that are fast reads) (I’m getting books from the library soon)
Oh my goodness I'm so glad y'all don't think I read just fanfic!!
I've been on a poetry kick lately, anything by Carol Ann Duffy, Elizabeth Bishop, Emily Dickenson, Walt Whitman, William Butler Yeats, Derek Walcott, I'm absolutely obsessed!! I'm also trying to get the tiktok teens into epic poetry so if you want a narrative that's a relatively easy read for epic poetry, Beowulf is excellent, especially Maria Dahvana Headley's translation.
And while I'm talking about literature, I'm doing my summer reread of the Great Gatsby. I might be biased by it is incredibly engaging, definitely one of the shorter works of American lit. Also, I have yet to find a short story by Fitzgerald that I did not love! You could probably find an anthology of his stuff and just pick one at random. Speaking of short stories, Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite scifi authors and his book the illustrated man is just a collection of speculative/scifi horror (you might have read the velvet or there will come soft rain in school) and it's all so good. (Also I love Fahrenheit 451) Also Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut, his style is very modern very dry, and absolutely hilarious in some parts and devastating in others.
Okay, classics rant done. Fledgling by Octavia Butler is amazing and the mystery of it makes it a real page-turner, if you like vampires, you'll love this it is so inventive with the genre!! Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner is a Hollywood sapphic romance that's not technically a slow burn if you read it in 12 hours like I did. The Mermaid the Witch and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, I know everyone is really into Our Flag Means Death right now, but what if that had more sapphics, more nonbinary characters, and more magic, and wasn't set in a European colonial era. Also, Meet Cute, it's an anthology of short stories by a bunch of different authors, every story is a meet-cute with a bunch of different couple dynamics and writing styles. It is a master class in writing romantic chemistry!
Also, I've been really into graphic novels lately. Odessa by Jonathan Hill is a post-apocalyptic family story and I believe it is the first in a trilogy. On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden is an absolutely gorgeous SciFi sapphic love story like seriously the art is stunning!! The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang, beautiful art and a beautiful story, so fun if you love fairytales and stories of family acceptance, very princess and the pauper vibes. Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabbie Rivera, this is technically a novel but there's an illustrated version of it by Celia Moscote that's absolutely gorgeous, a really impactful coming of age story that shows how race, gender, and sexuality intersect to create complex world views.
I hope this was helpful anon! I know I threw a lot at you, but I just love so so so many books lmao

mid-year book freakout
thanks for the tag @cocoartistwrites!
Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2021? oh good starting right off with an impossible question. I'm going to say THE OFFICE OF HISTORICAL CORRECTIONS by Danielle Evans (join the S.P.E.L.L. discussion!), PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke or NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS by Patricia Lockwood
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2021? I’ve only read one sequel—MISTER IMPOSSIBLE by Maggie Stiefvater
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? THE QUEER PRINCIPLES OF KIT WEBB by Cat Sebastian is on my shelves but I foolishly did not realize I would be a slave to my kindle while I'm nursing... I burn, I pine, I perish
Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2021?  hmm, maybe VELVET IS THE NIGHT by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Biggest Disappointment? oof ironic placement but either THE BEAUTIFUL ONES by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (only because I had SUCH high hopes) or PEOPLE WE MEET ON VACATION by Emily Henry (for similar reasons... I really shouldn't read friends-to-lovers tbh)
Biggest Surprise? BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME by Julia Claiborne Johnson was a surprise win for something I arbitrarily put on hold at the library. read it and talk to me about it!
Favorite New Author? Carmen Maria Machado
Newest Fiction Crush? Zadie Smith (yeah yeah my fault for sleeping on Zadie but WHITE TEETH is honestly The One compared to others by her). oh wait I just realized this might mean FICTIONAL not WRITER OF FICTION in which case uhhh... joscelin from KUSHIEL'S DART by Jacqueline Carey
Newest Favorite Character? Eileen from EILEEN by Otessa Moshfegh lol (she's a disaster and I love her) NO NO WAIT Gideon from GIDEON THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir
Book That Made You Cry? NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS by Patricia Lockwood, ANXIOUS PEOPLE by Fredrik Backman
Book That Made You Happy? I love bittersweet joy, so NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS and PIRANESI (the ending is just perfect)
Favorite Book Adaption You Saw This Year? hm I think MY COUSIN RACHEL by Daphne du Maurier (vastly superior to the 2020 REBECCA adaptation)
Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? toss-up between STATION ELEVEN ("I’m pretty sure this was a great book but my god, why did I read it in 2021???? Picturing the end of civilization is not my ideal use of time given, you know, all of this") and KLARA AND THE SUN ("Tonally and thematically, this is a Pixar film (or perhaps several of them). I can’t say it was wholly original, but it isn’t necessarily forgettable? Also I’m very sad")
Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year? I don't think it counts as beautiful, technically, but I'm really into the complementary designs and color palettes of Margaret Atwood's books
What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR NORRELL by Susanna Clarke, I know I know but it's such a large book and so far since deciding to finally get to it I'm always either egregiously pregnant or holding a baby
tagging: @angelagualtieri @rosesofthesouth @laneway & anyone who'd like to talk books!

Share the Disventure Camp thoughts Geo. Also, now that you've seen both seasons, what are your All Stars predictions?
oliver was one of the best parts of the season and i loved him so much ohhh the skrunkle
aiden & james were my favorite characters i think! <333 i really liked their development i love gay people i screamed at their first real kiss
it took a while for me to get used to every character because of their mics and acting. some of the acting was not believable at all and was the reason i dislikes some characters for a bit (cough rosa maria cough) before eventually warming up to them. it’s clear they improved a lot and found better actors for season 1. i’m curious how the S2 actors will be in S3.
maggy was genuinely annoying and not just because of her voice. sorry :(
lake was amazing!! i loved her arc!
connor was a good guy and i liked him, but i wouldn’t have brought him back for all-stars and i definitely wouldn’t have paired him with riya. that 21 year age gap is not looking good.
I LOVED HUNTESSALLY SO MUCH OH MY GOD THEY ARE EVERYTHING TO ME POLY REPRESENTATION IN MEDIA IS THE BEST STOP I WILL CRY OMGMGMGMGGM why are they fighting in the S3 opening. someone save me. huntessally stay strong. STAY STRONG!!!!!
WHY IS YUL YELLOW 💀 also i hated his ass “a latina stealing why doesn’t that surprise me” NAH MF YOU CANNOT BE REDEEMED I’M SORRY MAN YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN 💀
anyone wanna talk about how weird some challenges were? no? like making people kiss other people just for a challenge? i know it’s fiction but? what if someone is uncomfortable with it? yk? my aro ass couldn’t watch most of those scenes like ik it was to make some ships kiss and probably appeal to the fans but nah. you lost me brah. and outing aiden (while not specifically saying his name but yk) like. wow. this is. not fun! weird episodes
karol fuck you
riya, thin ice, i like you for your assholery but leaving aiden hanging left ME hanging as a fan of both. sadge
ally should’ve been a scene kid that’s all i came here to say
fuck you yul hope ur the first boot of S3
why was nina there. /vvvneg
now for predictions/wishes:
YUL FIRST BOOT WOOHOO 💯💯💯 /hj
if i don’t get gabellie & tessally alliance i will actually cry myself to sleep for those entire ten months the show will be airing i mean it guys i’m so fucking serious /j
alec and fiore need to make up or i will actually go bonkers and die
yul first boot
trevek do gay shit & krystal breaks them apart every time because they’re so cringe every time they flirt or something not in the high school couple way but just sooo fucking bad at flirting that it is physically damaging to everyone around them
nina dies in a fire YAY!!! WOOHOO!!! PARTY!!! (seriously she was the most annoying gimmick of the season hope she just disappears and its not brought up ever)
maybe. if connor is there. and he gives advice. he can give alec and fiore advice. right. right guys. I MISS MY FATHER-DAUGHTER DUO OKAY WAAAAAAA
jake will be a fucking idiot and hate aiden for NO reason because he is a fucking idiot. love him tho but i was hoping he wouldn’t be as insecure in s3 like girl get a therapist cmon
if i don’t get james-tom friendship.......
miriam early boot 😞 sorry queen 😞 i got this feeling 😞 inside my bones 😞
ashley early boot (pleasepleaseplease WHO ASKED FOR HER TO BE HERE i wanted nick or kai back so bad omfg)
this is more based on a fanart i saw but fiore should totally terrorize aiden and aiden just hates her ass
i want the teams to form then switch a bit so that there’s both s1 and s2 contestants on both teams bc wdym the teams are s1 and s2. thats the worst decision yet and the season hasnt even started

Future Hope Chapter 3: The First Night.. (part 1)
This is it.
The Revolution starts tonight, they'll all be actual heroes..
Everyone's minds were filled and scrambled with many thoughts, some were nervous, others were excited, one was.. worried. That worry suddenly went away when they heard a doorbell ring.
"It's her" Shouted Maria, tripping her way to the door, excited. "It's our clothes. This is it guys..!"
"We'll officially go out tonight!!!"
Maggy came to give them all the final product of the clothes they asked, everything was so beautiful and so well-made, you could tell alot of love was put into her work, everyone was visibly gleaming with joy.
Everyone wore their own custom made outfit, trying it on for the first time, there were absolutely no complaints.
"Mags this is amazing!!!" Shouted Maria with the upmost glee of her long black cape and hood.
Maggy smile with pride and gave out a sly smirk. "Only the best when you ask anything out of me" She added.
"Heh, this aint bad at all.." Said Spike, putting up the hood of his custom made spiked jacket.
"So.." Asked Maggy. "This is it huh? You guys are really gonna go out and fight crime?"
"Yeah...This is it" Maria answered with a determined look on her face, she seemed ready for anything..
"Yep! With the nine of us, we can accomplish anything!" Griff finished, smiling wide as he could.
Suddenly, the front door knocked, and before Maria could even answer, two very familiar faces barged in as if they owned the place.
"Hellooooooo mothers and fuckers!!~" Shouted their friend Ris, also known as Penny Parker's doppelganger. Right behind her was her partner Ash, smiling softly.
"Ris! What are you doing here?" Asked Maria.
"Isnt it obvious? We're here to kick ass with you guys!" She added casually with wide grin on her face.
"Huh?! How did you-" Maria was cut off by Ash. "We saw on Tumblr that you guys were putting together a team of vigilantes, we just had to join." He added.
"What?!" Exclaimed Blink. "Who the hell posted that?!"
That question was answer when everyone, almost simoutainiously turned their heads to glare at Griff, who had a very obvious guilty face. "I-I got carried away OK?!" He defended himself with an embarrassed blush on his cheeks. Maria simply sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
"Alright alright fine, the more the merrier anyways" Maria added. "We just gotta get you guys your desired powers and-"
"Oh we already got those!" Said Ris, cutting her off once more.
"WHAT??!!" Maria shouted, and was ready to beat up Griff.
"Chillax, he didnt posted about the fountain, we just stalked you guys and made our wishes later after you left" Said Ash, who was enjoying the chaotic energy he and Ris were bringing into the room.
"Well, what kind of powers did you guys get then?" Asked Muffin, curious.
"Well!" Started Ris, releasing snowflakes from the palms of her hands. "I can basically control any cold elements! Snow, Ice, you name it!" She said with pride.
"So...Bootleg Elsa?" Scoffed Spike, making Spooks choke on her pumpkin spiced latte. Ris absolutely did not approve that joke, huffing and turning her cheek. Ash lovingly messed with her hair and gave her a peck on the forehead.
"Hey it's OK, you're MY Bootleg Elsa" He said with a wink. Making the rest of the gang either awe, roll their eyes or gag jokingly.
"Anyways." Started Ash, pulling out a little capsule, pushing a button on it which stretched into a black and red bo staff, spinning it in between his fingers. "I wished for a bo staff and the ability to weild like Robin and Shang combined, plus-" He pressed another button, making knives appear on eitch end of the bo staff.
"This baby got knives too" He finished with a smirk.
"OK then..." Maria started talking. "You guys picked well, I suppose all that's left is to-"
"Make outfits? Yeah we did those too!" Ris cut her off one more time. Maria was getting absolutely pissed by this.
"You guys.. Really went ahead huh?" She asked, pretending to be annoyed when really she's impressed.
"Yep! Mine is kinda like Bayonetta by sexier." Said Ris, posing playfully.
"I just got a warrior-like outfit, kinda like batman but if he was gay." Said Ash with a smile.
"Aaalright then...Anything else I should know before you cut me off again?" Asked Maria.
"Nope! That's it! We'll be leaving with ya'll tonight!" Answered Ris who was quite excited to go apeshit.
"Right. Well then, everyone down to the basement to strategize. We'll be decidng who gets to watch out where tonight... It's finally time you guys.."
Everyone nodded and followed Maria down to the basement which is currently the Future Hope HQ, to finally decide how they were gonna spilt and start making a change to their city, making a change to the world
Introducing a new.. Future Hope..

1. book you’ve reread the most times?
i'd have to say either megan whalen turner's the thief or daniel pinkwater's bushman lives!, back when i was in middle school. honestly i'm probably due for a revisit at this point—they're both the sort of books that hold up better than most ya, albeit in very different ways. honestly i'm getting whiplash just putting them so close to each other
2. top 5 books of all time?
oh boy...this might be less "of all time" and more just ones particularly on my mind at the moment:
maurice, e.m. forster (load-bearing text for my psyche)
the left hand of darkness, ursula k. le guin (no explanation necessary)
or what you will, jo walton (incredible reality-bending metafiction)
pilgrim at tinker creek, annie dillard (some of the best nature writing, period)
what is the grass: walt whitman in my life, mark doty (history/biography/memoir/literary analysis/love letter)
11. what non-fiction books do you like if any?
plenty! mostly in the vein of lyrical memoirs/personal essays: bluets by maggie nelson, diary of a left-handed birdwatcher by leonard nathan, close to the knives by david wojnarowicz, and the last two titles on my top five list. also books like braiding sweetgrass by robin wall kimmerer and figuring by maria popova—ones where the author has a profound passion and wonder for the subject and the way they write about it brings you into that feeling too.

Part XXVIII: Please Stand By
Author’s Notes: Sorry for the delay. Honestly this post schedule won’t be much better but I’m posting back to back chapters this weekend to make up for it. Please bear with me and thank you so much for bearing with me so far!
Genre: Angst
Summary: Direct follow up to the previous chapter. You, Tommy, Maria and others finally plan a search and rescue. You go rogue because of love. Secrets are revealed.
Ship: Joel x Fem!Reader
Word Count: 3.5k
Entering the morning of the sixth day, you found yourself wide awake. You hadn’t slept at all as you waited for everyone to get on the same page as you and form a search and rescue team. As soon as the sun peeked over the horizon, you left the house and made your way to Tommy and Maria’s.
Maria answered the door in her robe. The two of you held each other’s gaze for a solid minute before she spoke. “I know. Come in.” Her voice was still laced with sleep.
“I’ll make some breakfast.” Tommy yelled out as he came down the stairs.
“I’m not hungry.” You said only loud enough for Maria to hear.
“Honey, we’re all gonna need our energy today.” She reasoned to which you agreed.
You sat in the living room by yourself as you waited for Maria to get dressed and for the food to get done. A hard knock at the door broke you from your thoughts of possible plans. Tommy asked if you could get the door as he plated the food.
“(Y/N), I’m glad you’re here already.” Maggie, Glen’s wife said. She was surprised to see your face on the other side of the door. “I asked the others to meet here this morning. They should be here any minute.” You moved to the side and she walked in.
“The others?” You asked.
“Who is it?” Tommy asked as he walked into the living room. “Oh, Maggie! It’s good that you’re here. Maria is coming down in a few moments, then we can talk about this.”
“We should wait ‘til the rest of ‘em come first.”
“Who else is coming exactly?” Maria asked from the top of the stairs as she made her way down.
“Aaron, Marcus’ husband, and I also asked my brother to come and help.”
“Dean?” Tommy asked, to which she nodded. “I’m gonna make some more food.” He disappeared back into the kitchen.
The group of you settled around the dining room table with maps and scrap paper scattered across it. The original route and patrol agenda was dissected as the group discussed possible troubles that they could have run into. Maggie, the fiery one of the bunch, wanted to go full blazing, utilizing major resources while Aaron and Dean wanted to meet up with the scavenging group and create a larger search and rescue team while they were still out there. You and Maria wanted to be more stealthy, a plan that relied on less people. Where the two of you differed was that Maria wanted a multistep plan that involved a discreet group to perform reconnaissance first, then form an actual rescue group from there. You had waited long enough and while you understood her desire to see exactly what they were up against, you couldn’t just sit and wait for word to come while he and the others were lying somewhere suffering. You and Maggie gave major backlash to the idea, but Maria being the leader had ultimate say. After hours of deliberating, Maria came to the conclusion that the group should take a small break and cool off before coming back.
Well into the afternoon, the group walked away with a plan that everyone could more or less agree on. You, Tommy, and Maggie were group one while Aaron and Dean were a part of group two with new recruit Carrie. Both groups would leave at the same time but group two would stay back at a checkpoint while your group carried on. The focus was recon, but if you found the patrolmen in a compromising position, then you’d radio for group two to come in as back up. Maria’s final word on the matter was that everyone would leave tomorrow morning at sunrise. All you did was nod your head, but as you walked back to your house, you couldn’t help but notice how high the sun still sat in the sky. You were entering the evening, but you still had enough hours of daylight. You already suggested leaving today, but that idea was shot down quickly. Though reluctant, Maggie even agreed to wait.
The closer you walked to your house, the more distant you felt from Joel. That feeling of distance fed another growing feeling in the pit of your stomach. You couldn’t help but feel like he was in immediate danger and needed to be found now. The feeling was becoming too painful to ignore. When you got home, you quickly packed a bag, mostly with medical supplies and different weapons. You couldn’t go to the garage and request a car without word getting back to Maria. Horses were commonly used throughout the settlement, so sneaking one out the stables and walking around with it did not raise any eyebrows.
You timed it perfectly as you escaped through the east gate, Jackson’s least guarded point, during the shift change. Once outside, you followed their exact route all the way to the first checkpoint. Before you even dismounted, you saw that something had gone wrong. There were bullet holes in the wooden walls and a single broken window. You tied the horse down a significant distance from the log cabin and cautiously approached on foot. It was completely silent, so you doubted the building was currently occupied and by the looks of it, you had long missed the fight. You rounded the corner to find the door already open and the first thing you saw was blood on the floor. It was splattered all around; too much for any single person to survive unless the ambush was by a group and not a single person. You hoped the blood didn’t belong to Joel’s group. You searched the entire premise but no one was there, not even a body. You allowed yourself to let out a long breath. You were terrified that you were going to see Joel’s lifeless body laying on the ground and you weren’t quite sure how you were going to take it. Your work, however, wasn’t over. If they weren’t there, they were somewhere else and still needed help.
You slowed your horse down as you heard an impending noise from your left. It wasn’t the infected, that much you knew. It sounded like a low, mechanical rumble. As it got closer, the familiar sound of gunshots echoed through the air. Your horse became very panicked and knocked you off his back. Vision blurry, you watched it run off into the distance. Still laying on the ground, a molotov bomb flew over your head. You watched as it hit the ground and exploded. The fire spreading quickly got you back on your feet. A heavy duty truck whizzed right past you as you did. There weren’t that many places to take cover in the wooded area, but it didn’t matter much. To your surprise, the truck did not turn to follow you as you ran. It kept moving along with people shooting in another direction from the bed. You heard screaming and shouting come from there. The truck itself had a wolf-like symbol spray painted on the doors. You had never seen a faction like that, but thought it was worth following stealthily if they had something to do with the patrolmen.
You caught up with them in a dilapidated suburban area as they attacked another faction. You could tell them apart because they had no symbols but were dressed alike as if they were an organized unit or cult. You soon realized that you had found yourself caught in the middle of a war. Bullets flew over your head and you weren’t sure if they were aimed at you or the enemies, but you weren’t waiting around to find out. You ran through a blown up house until you reached the edge. There was quite the drop and you weren’t confident that you were gonna make it without damaging your legs somehow. Their voices got closer behind you, so without a second’s thought, you lept off the edge and into a yard with overgrown grass.
You stifled a groan as a pang of pain shot through your ankle. As soon as you got up, a large hand wrapped itself around your mouth while the other pulled you back into an adjacent house with force. The hand covered your mouth so tightly. You began to struggle with muffled screams emitting through his hand.
“Shhh! Shhh!” The voice belonging to the hands hushed you so as to not reveal your location. You were kept there in the tight embrace until the rumble of the truck that drove past the house faded away. When you were finally let go, you turned to reveal your attacker. Deep down, you wanted it to be Joel, but you knew it did not feel like him.
Your eyes widened. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Think I’d let you do this on your own?” Jesse leaned his weary looking body against the decaying wall behind him.
“Jesse…” You began. You wanted to tell him that he shouldn’t have come, but you truly did not feel that way. You trusted him both because of his skill set and because he was your friend. While you were mentally prepared to do this by yourself, you weren’t mad at him being by your side.
“You thought you could just sneak away and no one would notice? Maria put Jackson on lockdown when she saw that you had taken a horse and other supplies. No one is to use the stables or weaponry but the rescue team now.”
“They’re still moving on with the plan?” You inquired. He nodded. “Good, they can still be my backup. I wasn’t against the plan itself, just the timing. I already waited six long days for this, Jesse.”
He sighed. “When I heard that it was you that snuck out, I hurried and stole a car before she shut down the garage.”
“You should have waited and left with the rescue group.”
“Gimme shit about it later.” The two of you heard voices nearby. “Christ, there’s a lot of them.” He pulled out his gun and you did the same.
The two of you stealthily made it across the block to his car with few casualties left in your wake. As he drove, the chaotic screams of the infected began to intermingle with the fading sounds of gunshots. You turned around and in the distance, you saw the two factions getting attacked. The horde seemed to be coming from all over. Just as you turned back to face the front, one ran out in front of the car. Jesse hit it. The head was crushed against the windshield and the blood lowered the visibility. The windshield wipers could only do so much to help as the body continued to lay across the hood. More clickers and runners began to attack the vehicle causing Jesse to lose control of the steering. Suddenly, the car drove off the edge of a road and flew through the air before landing on a sharp decline. Despite slamming on the brakes, the car kept rolling down the hill until it hit water.
“Shit!” Jesse bellowed as he gathered his surroundings.
“Oh, God!” The car began to quickly fill with cold water. You unbuckled your seatbelt before the heavy chunk of metal was engulfed completely.
Jesse took his dagger and cut himself free from his seatbelt before swimming out of the already busted door window. You followed suit and he stayed to pull you through. He was ahead of you and broke the surface first. Your chest tightened with pressure as you desperately needed a breath of air. Large bubbles exited your mouth as you slowly exhaled just before your head broke the surface. Your heart pounded as you gasped. Your eyes darted around the body of water until they found Jesse. He was halfway to shore when he turned and saw you. He swam back and gently put your arm around his neck so the two of you could swim together. As the water got shallow, you let go and crawled through the mud until there was no water left.
“You ok?” You turned and asked him. Both of you were lying down in the mud.
“Never better.” He sarcastically answered.
“C’mon.” You got up first and offered your hand for him to take.
He let out an exaggerated grunt. “Thanks.”
At this point, the two of you were lost. You were in a city now, that much you knew. You recognized a skyway passing through the area as well as a conglomeration of skyscrapers. The two of you quickly found shelter in the lobby of what used to be a bank. You didn’t realize how badly Jesse was limping until the two of you walked inside. You thought he was dragging his feet because he was tired, rightly so.
“You need to get off your feet. There’s a bench right here. C’mon.” You began to guide him over, but he brushed the pain off.
“I’m fine.”
You continued to watch him limp. “How hurt are you?”
“I don’t know. I’ll be ok though.” He replied before finally sitting down. “I’m surprised you’re not limping with the way you fell from the sky like that.” He chuckled. “I was looking everywhere for you and there you were, practically fell into my lap.” A tugging on his foot redirected his attention to you as you kneeled in front of him. “No, no, you don’t need to do that.” His stomach made a funny feeling as your fingers tenderly grazed his ankle. You untied his shoe and took it off along with his sock. You examined it and gently placed it down before shrugging off your backpack. You rummaged through the first aid kit and applied ointment before wrapping his ankle in gauze.
“You’re gonna want to keep this elevated on the bench. Your ankle is sprained. I recommend wearing a brace when we get back home.” You finally spoke.
“Thank you, doctor (Y/N).” He replied softly. “Man, Maria’s not gonna be happy about the car---Hey, are you alright?” Jesse reached out and steadied you. You wavered back and forth, feeling dizzy as you stood up.
“I’m ok, I just...I just need to rest a bit too.” You lifted his leg on the bench and sat down before placing it back down on your lap. The dizziness dissipated but the nausea was still there. You took a deep breath in and slowly exhaled.
“What’s wrong?” He asked tenderly. You continued your patterned breathing, leaving a silence between you two. “We’ll find Joel and ‘em.” He tried to comfort you, thinking you were having some sort of panic attack. “They know how to handle themselves. They’ll be fine.”
Your stomach lurches and all at once, you roll off the bench and throw up on the ground. Jesse called out your name, but you couldn’t respond. You felt like you couldn’t breath as more came up. He got up and bent down next to you. You tried to crawl away, but your stomach kept retching. Tears began to fall down your cheeks when your body finally calmed down. You could breathe again. You gasped for air as your body shook almost violently. The tears became a full on cry as you felt a variety of emotions at once. You were embarrassed, sad, nervous, enraged.
Jesse hugged you and brought you into his side as you brought your knees up to your chest and huddled in place. You knew your breath must have reeked, so you tried to wiggle your way out of his embrace, but he kept you there to silently let you know it didn’t matter. After a moment, he loosened his arm around you and you attempted to get up. Your legs were wobbly underneath you like noodles. He got up with you and let you lean on him as he walked you to a wall to lean against. Quickly, he limped over to your bag and got your water bottle. Privately in a corner of the lobby, you washed your mouth out with what was left.
He offered you one of his water bottles to actually drink from to which you were grateful. The cool liquid felt nice against your scratchy throat. You even craved it which led you to suspect that you were dehydrated. Unfortunately, your body still disagreed. Only moments after you drank the water, you spat it back up. At this point, there was nothing left in your stomach to retch, but your body kept telling it to do so as if there was a malfunction going on in there. Your abdominal muscles were sore from the involuntary motions. Not knowing what else to do, you just handed him back the water and began your breathing exercises again. You laid your hand over your belly and rubbed it, hoping that would do something.
Jesse stared at you for a long time. “Are you pregnant?”
Your eyes opened and laid on him. “Yes.”
He tried to conceal the multitude of emotions that he felt. “I get why you came out here, but I gotta take you back. You need real care, (Y/N).”
“I know, but I...I feel like I’m so close to him. How could I turn back now?” You tried to reason, tears streaming down your face.
“You can’t even hold down water. How far do you think you’ll get once you’ve passed out from dehydration?”
“I know you’re right, but---” You began to reason.
“Joel would have my ass if he knew I condoned you being out here while pregnant. I mean listen, you’re body and all that, but I really think we should turn back. Both of us are pretty banged up and with the rescue group already dispatched, you won’t have to worry about Joel.”
“I’ll keep worrying about him until I see for myself that he’s alright.” You sighed. “But you’re right. I don’t mean to sound selfish, but it's kinda hard to not only be thinking of myself anymore. I’m not far enough along to be showing or feel the baby kick, so I still feel like...me; like the me I’ve been my whole life which was not a parent. Now, I’ve got to start thinking about this little bean right here.”
He nodded. “Joel’s a lucky man; luckier than most out here. Congratulations, (Y/N).”
“Thank you.” A smile crept up at the corner of your lips.
“To be honest, I didn’t think Joel was the parental type. How did he take it? ‘Cause I can beat him up for you if he’s thinking about running off.” Jesse joked. You weren’t sure if you wanted him to know that you hadn’t told Joel yet. You didn’t mean for now two people to know before your own husband. Jesse knowing that Joel doesn’t know about you would just be another pang of guilt.
“You didn’t know he had a daughter, did you?” You kind of felt off about telling such personal details about your husband to someone outside the family, but you convinced yourself it was harmless, especially to explain your point.
He looked at you surprised. “No! I always took him as a man who liked his solitude. I pictured him staying on an isolated ranch or up in the mountains before all this happened.”
You chuckled. “No, he lived in Austin, Texas with his daughter. He was a carpenter. Had himself a nice little suburban house too.
“What happened to her?” He inquired gently.
“She didn’t make it.” She looked down at her feet. “It happened a long time ago. She would have been an adult by now. Are you the father type?” You asked, wanting to take the subject off of Sarah.
He chuckled. “I wouldn’t mind being a dad if things were different.” He gazed down at you intently. “I think I could go both ways. If it doesn't happen, it doesn’t happen, but if it does, I could see myself loving parenthood and wanting to do my best.”
You looked up and held his gaze. “Not thinking about settling down with Kat?”
He let out a loud exhale. “I don’t think so. I enjoy my time with her when we’re together, but as often as we break up...I know parents don’t have to be together to raise a child, but I don’t want to start off that way if I can help it. It is what it is though. If I got her pregnant, I’d be there for her and the baby every step of the way.”
Silence sat between you two for a long time as you traced your steps back to where you lost the horse. After miles of walking, a familiar sound caught your attention. Between the trees, you spotted your horse. Jesse followed as you cautiously approached it. The two of you spent the next few hours riding the horse back to Jackson.

OSRR: 2791
today was a day.
i was tired when i woke up so i actually slept longer, until about 7:50 this morning, when i usually get up half an hour earlier. i threw on sweats and went to the car and brought joel to work.
when i woke up the first time, i realized a few things:
1. i was so exhausted i couldn't keep my eyes open
2. i had therapy today at 11am
3. i didn't have any appointments until late in the day
so i sent a message to maria and told her i'd be in at noon because of a doctor's appointment. that would let me sleep longer when i got back.
and that is exactly what happened.
i went back and i took a nap for about two hours, and i got up around 10:52, when i realized "oh shit i have therapy in ten minutes." so i threw on clean clothes, went to wash my hair in the sink, dried it briefly, and went to my car.
and i talked to christine for the forty five minutes we have scheduled biweekly.
i told her about the week i've had, about the confrontation on monday and the emotional and physical toll it took on tuesday, about my productivity on wednesday, and my less than spectacular thursday. she said she was super proud of me for standing up for myself and handling that confrontation as well as i did even though i wasn't prepared for it, along with a bunch of other things.
i told her about my reapplying to northeastern and the small existential crisis i had yesterday about my identity being related to academics and my intelligence. i just hate it all. i said, "don't worry, this is an issue for next time," at which she laughed and said "i appreciate that."
and it turns out that we've been working together for two years as of yesterday, the 24th, which is amazing. i met her once before covid hit in earnest and everything shut down. which is crazy if you ask me.
anyway, that was nice.
i went in and had no appointments but maggie again tried to guilt-trip me into helping her type her paper again, like ma'am that is not my responsibility to type this for you. this is a disability problem. go talk to the disability specialist. her office is over there. leave me alone.
fucking hell, man. yknow?
but i also got to sit and talk to my coworkers for a while about work and disabilities and trauma and the bite model and anger and just random things, and it was nice to talk to them. celeste is really nice, and i love kristen. they're both so sweet and i love them.
anyway, after work i got joel and brought him home. he has a busy weekend planned, so i let him be and headed off.
i picked up dinner from panera for me, chelsea, and james, and we sat and ate and finished arcane.
Tumblr media
the entire show is just emotional damage. but it's so good and i'm very, very gay. it's fine.
anyway, i'm home now and i'm exhausted and i gotta work in the morning and i'm not happy about it. i just want to sleep, yknow? it's been a long-ass week and i'm SO over it.
