Iron-Blooded Orphans being the first Gundam show I completed is gonna be so funny later down the road. Mainly because I’ll never be able to take any love triangle in this series seriously now.

Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely?

Hmm. I don't really think this way, honestly, and I don't think I would rewrite any of them.

They're all fics I enjoy rereading, and I enjoy not having to think about rewrites. The closest I'm coming is Game Theory which isn't being rewritten, just going through more tweaks than I'd generally give a work of mine.

I'm not the kind of writer that sits there and think 'oh wow I'd do it SO differently now' re: older works. Unless they're like so old no one here has read them.

There's nothing I'd rewrite completely. But I would split most of my earlier stories into shorter chapters, because a lot of the longer chapters came about as a result of me being ashamed of my overall story word length, and some chapters feel very cluttered as a result. But that's formatting, not rewriting.

2. Anything that you'd like to write but feel like you're unable to?

Oh yeah, Mallory & Mount, lol. That's why I haven't started it yet.

Still building the world and still kind of thinking of the skills I need. Also very, very aware that the last time I split off with two new characters in an original story it didn't do well (The Ice Plague) which has spooked me and makes me doubt my skills whenever it comes to writing anything new. :/

Oh, the wildest alternative universe. Honestly, probably the Underline the Rainbow universe. Turning fae tales into inceptioned omegaverse where some of the roles are reversed (Gwyn as a villain, Augus as a mild mannered person, Efnisien as the hero) is pretty wild!

It doesn't feel like it, but if you were tell a complete stranger about the journey from Game Theory to Underline the Black it looks pretty unhinged.

The moment he entered the small café, he felt eyes on him. A small bell above his head had chimed, as he’d opened the door, making his presence known. Still he couldn’t shake the feeling, that your fixed stare had found him even before he’d stepped through the threshold.

His striking blue eyes quickly surveyed the room. It was near empty. Only two customers were sitting at the small round tables and one bored looking cashier stood behind the counter.

To his left, at the window, sat an elderly gentleman reading his paper. And then there was you.

The clock at the wall, read ten minutes to seven, so no wonder business was still slow.

August stepped to the counter, clearing his throat, as the cashier had yet to look up, from the magazine he’d been hiding behind.

His deep voice rumbled: ”One Americano.”

When the guy finally put the magazine away, he flinched as he noticed the large, domineering man before him. Swallowing thickly at the harsh glare, pinning him in place. He stumbled over his words: “Erm, yeah of course, sir. F-for here or to go?”

“Here.” His face fell slightly at his response, clearly having hoped he’d leave with the coffee. “Al-alright, you can erm..sit. Your order will be right out.”

What irked August even more than the stuttering idiot in front of him, was the attentive gaze that hadn’t left him since he’d set foot in the coffee shop.

He slowly turned his head to the left, where you sat next to the counter, a cookie and beverage sitting on your table, untouched.

Telling him, you couldn’t have been here for more than a few minutes.

August scanned your face. For a split second, your eyes met, then you hurriedly looked back down, clearly having been caught, ogling him. You were rather young to be an agent. Especially for being put on his case, he mused.

He didn’t know if he should be insulted that someone like you, was sent to catch him or impressed that you’d found him so quickly. His dark brows furrowed in thought, while he made his way over to a free table close to the door.

The longer August studied you, the more he became enamoured by your looks, you were exactly his kind of pretty.

Apparently too scared to look up again, you kept nibbling at your chocolate chip cookie and taking small sips from your cup.

At last the cashier came and brought his Americano. Moving away as quickly as he came, as if August’s mere presence could hurt him somehow. When he took a sip, he noticed you had pulled out a notebook. Intrigued he kept watching you, while you scribbled something down. What were you doing? Were you communicating with someone? Calling in backup?

As easy as you were on the eyes, he couldn’t let you arrest him just because of that. He needed an action plan and fast, because your cookie was gone already and your hot beverage couldn’t be far off.

August didn’t enjoy making a scene but if he had to, he would. Putting down his own cup, he let his hand slide off the table, down to his sturdy thigh. His left had picked up the beverage anew, as to not rouse suspicion. Gently holding onto his hidden gun with his right. He was ready. Seemingly so were you.

Next, you did something that took him by surprise. You ripped a tiny piece of paper out of the notebook, then continued putting the small book away and into your bag, standing up. You smoothed down your deep red skirt, making your way to the counter to pay for what you’d consumed.

August didn’t let any movement of yours go unnoticed. He knew, putting away your purse, presented you with the perfect opportunity to pull out your own gun and fire away.

Your face turned to look at him, the tiniest and most precious of smiles painting your lips. Which confused him further, you had yet to draw your weapon. And what was with that slip of paper? You clutched it so tightly in your hand, he was sure whatever secret message it held, was illegible by now.

But he was ready to pounce any moment, all his muscles taunt, as you glided over to his table. August’s blue eyes were gleaming over the top of his cup at your perfectly innocent face, betraying absolutely nothing of your intentions. Steadily setting his coffee back down. He hoped, he didn’t have to go through with his action plan, it’d be a pity to shoot such a fine specimen of a woman.

Surprisingly before he could even think about making a move, you stopped in your tracks as if suddenly unsure of what to do.

He raised one of his thick eyebrows in question, because instead of making your own move as he expected, your hand shot out. Letting go of that piece of paper which promptly fell onto the table. Then you turned on your heels and rushed out of the café without looking back.

August was stumped. If you were an agent why the piece of paper? Why not just go and turn him in? Or arrest him yourself?

As if the little scrap of paper could somehow burn him, he carefully slid it across the tabletop with his index finger. He glanced around the still relatively empty café, to ensure no one was watching and only then he unfolded it. Now gawking at it, in utter disbelief.

Lying in front of him was the formerly, folded massage, but it did not contain any secret information. No. Your name, along with what he assumed was your phone number, had been written on it. Even going as far as having drawn a little heart at the end. August blankly stared at the scribble. Realisation hitting him all at once.

Huh. Okay. I made sort of a weird discovery. See, I wanted to choose some phrase to inscribe over the door of my wizard tower. And I wanted to choose some phrase that looked like Latin, but wasn't actually Latin. You know, so other wizards seeing it wouldn't be able to translate it and would assume it must be in some esoteric Latin-like language, when it was actually complete gibberish.

So I used an online lorem ipsum generator to whip up some fake Latin, generating a few paragraphs and then picking out a sentence that sounded good. I chose "At augue eget arcu dictum varius." But before deciding on the sentence, I tried plugging it into Google translate to make sure it wasn't a real Latin sentence, because, again, I wanted it to be gibberish that only looked like Latin.

And Google translate said it meant "But publicity needs an arc, said the casino."

So, okay, that's a pretty nonsensical meaning, but... it's still a meaning. I didn't want a real Latin sentence, even one that didn't make sense. I wanted gibberish that only looked Latin. So I picked a different sentence from the generated text. "Nunc sed augue lacus viverra vitae congue eu."

Google translate said it meant "Now, let's talk about the cartoons of life, homework, football."

Another try: "Nam libero justo laoreet sit."

"For just let it be free."

Um... okay. So maybe that particular lorem ipsum generator does actually generate real Latin sentences. I tried a different online lorem ipsum generator, once again generating a few paragraphs and picking out a sentence I liked. "In hac habitasse platea dictumst."

Google translate said it meant "He is said to have lived in this street."

Okay, this wasn't working. Maybe lorem ipsum generators weren't the way to go. If I wanted gibberish, I'd have to generate it myself. So I made up my own fake Latin-sounding sentence, without the aid of any online tools. "Quosquo birendum ea miscum sul."

Google translate said it meant "It should be mixed with anything else."

What!? Okay, I tried again. "Itaque astane lorbum igitum re."

Google translate: "And so, at this moment, the scumbag is gone."

Now, it seems... fairly unlikely that I am actually generating meaningful Latin sentences by accident. So my best guess is that if you type in any gibberish into Google Translate that vaguely resembles Latin it will silently "correct" it enough to wring some sort of meaning out of it. This doesn't seem to work for other languages, at least not others that I've tried; if you type in gibberish Google Translate usually just repeats it back untranslated. But apparently Google translate is... very forgiving when it comes to Latin. Can anyone who actually knows Latin confirm?

Hell, I'll try it one more time with a longer gibberish sentence. Uh… "Acitane helex iapago lurim io pas neritas."

Oh, hey, that one worked! Google Translate left that one alone (except for "correcting" "iapago" to "japago" for some reason).

it makes me go crazy when i think about how both the character and the outside lpers and streamers see cabs as this heartless bad guy. he was really so willing to do anything to be able to prove jowd innocent. btw, I read somewhere that cabs completely drops his vocal tic when hes being serious and that brings up so Many Thoughts. oh cabanela..

LIKE. how wild is it that the writing is so good it works both in game AND in real life like people see him as the antagonist (which ofc he is for the first bit) and there’s this overwhelming feeling of like resentment and mistrust WHICH IS. exactly what everyone in the freaking game feels towards him too. So for The Nascent Diplomat I'm pretty sure it's:

'We are a hard alchemy, you and I,' the Raven Prince said. 'A hard alchemy I've ruined and failed at many times, even as you've kept the experiment going perhaps in spite of your better judgement. And it is a hard alchemy that deserves more of my love and care and effort, because I want to be your father, Gwyn, and not your Master, or your King, or your owner. I knew I could do all of these things better than fatherhood, so I forced you into role after role, when all you wanted was a parent. I even believed Oxcillian could do it for me, be the father figure I couldn't.' The Raven Prince's voice choked up, and Gwyn didn't know what to say, what to do, because it shattered some part of him, hearing the Raven Prince this upset, this regretful. 'What a mewling beef-witted wagtail I've been.'

As for what inspired it... I always wanted to start healing the Raven Prince's relationship with Gwyn in this series and it felt like we'd never get here!

I'm so glad we did. But also I just love writing tRP's dialogue so much.

This will be the same for 14 as well! My favourite lines are almost always dialogue in anything :D

In Sunblind Auguste reminisces about a time he really pissed Vannes off:

Damianos has a similar look of mortification on his face as Auguste recounts this. “That,” he stutters - “those are private things. What on earth had you done ?”

“Stopped her from riding an unbroken Patran stallion some fool had brought to show off. She’s an incomparable horsewoman now but he would have killed her.” - and so of course he had interceded, said that it was a fine creature, but wouldn’t the lady do him the honour of escorting him to luncheon instead? Here, the roses are blooming in the east garden, shall we go that way, milady? And then of course after she had smiled, and curtsied, and taken his arm, they had got out of sight of the stables and she had shoved him (to little effect), stamped on his foot (to more), and told him that he’d pay for this .

Well, this is the immediate aftermath - Vannes’ revenge (phase one of her revenge, before she realised she could just fuck every single girl he liked):

It would have been fine if it weren’t for the stablemaster. Being from Barbin and, furthermore, the father of three red-headed daughters himself, he was simply putty in her hands.

“Excuse me, has the Prince gone this way recently?”

Auguste shrank farther back into his hiding place. Etien shook his head at him solemnly. “And to think,” he whispered, “all this could have been avoided.”

“Shhh!” said Auguste frantically, and tried to crunch his knees up around his ears. He didn’t think the stablemaster had seen him slip in, but —

“Yes - oh, thank you! Yes, his Lady Mother has asked for him - ha, I shall be sure to tell her! Good day!” Mother was not asking for him - Mother had a megrim and was shut up in the solar with strict instructions that no-one, particularly not her children, was to bother her. He held his breath. Maybe she’d moved on?

There was an ominous creak, like the barn door had closed. It was unusually empty, as the stablehands were all out attempting to corral the stallion. Geraint had grimly reported that it had broken its halter, and last he saw had been menacing an elderly clerk that had had the misfortune to be crossing the courtyard.

“Au-guuuste!” This was a very bad sign, as dropping the Prince meant that the stablemaster had slouched off for his luncheon. Or possibly that the stallion had eaten one of the hands. Either seemed likely.

It was time for the last line of defence.

“Do I have to?” Geraint hissed.

“You’re the one that said ‘please don’t!’” Auguste whispered back, furiously.

With a sigh, Geraint unfolded all of his considerable height and meandered up towards the voice.

“Oh,” he said woodenly. “I didn’t see you there, Vannes. I have been napping.” He was an awful actor. Whenever they were forced into participating in the solstice masques Geraint had always been relegated to the role of - tree, or giant, or, on one notable occasion, ‘stupid villager’.

“In the hay?” she said sweetly.

In their hiding place, Etien nodded, looking pleased. Etien had put the hay in his hair, for authenticity. “Yes,” Geraint said, after a pause.

“So Auguste is here,” she said, and then, raising her voice, “Auguste! You coward! Come out right now!”

“Why… Why would you think that?” Geraint asked, in a supreme act of improvisation.

She tch’d. “As if I don’t know that you all go for those ‘afternoon naps’ together, so you can all fondle each others balls or whatever it is—”

“Vanni!” Geraint said, shocked. Auguste’s face burned. Etien put a hand over his mouth, shoulders shaking.

“It’s true! AND I can hear Etien laughing, so get out of my way—”

“Vanni,” Geaint said in a warning tone. Was she trying to dart past him? Had he caught her?

“Hands OFF, you great lump—” and then an oof, like someone extremely large had been thumped in the stomach. “Don’t think I didn’t hear you tell him to!” she shrieked, and then Auguste knew the jig was up.

“You win,” he called morosely, and stood, offering a hand to Etien, who was still laughing. He emerged from the last stall, to see Vannes standing over Geraint, who was clutching his stomach and wheezing.

“What did you do to him?” he said in alarm.

“Payback,” she said coldly, dusting off her hands. “And now it’s your turn.” From her chatelaine, she unhooked a wicked looking pair of scissors. “I thought - what matters to Auguste as much as horsemanship matters to me?” She advanced on him. Snip snip went the scissors. “I’m taking the hair.”

His hand flew to the back of his head. He’d just got it long enough to tie back! And he’d been growing it for months now, and he’d had such a row with Father about it in the first place, who’d accused him of looking ‘shaggy’, ‘unkempt’, ‘like a cowherd.’

“Not a chance,” Auguste said, backing away. “And I did you a favour!”

She howled with rage. “I could have managed it!”

“It’s not a case of could, Vanni, it’s a case of would! As in - the stallion would have killed you!”

“Publicly humiliating me! In front of the Vaskian ambassador!”

“Vanni,” he pled. “Be reasonable!”

She stamped her foot. “Your Vanni privileges are revoked! It’s my-lady-of-Barbin to you!”

Geraint was out of action, and Etien was in hysterics. Both were currently useless. He considered every course of action available to him that didn’t involve knocking Vannes out cold, and made the sensible, princely decision - to run away.

The stables had a back door. He could burst through there and then scramble up one of the orchard trees before she caught up, and descend when her rage cooled off. A week, maximum. He could live on apples for a week.

“No thankyou!” he yelped, and fled.

She shouted after him but he raced between the stalls, and was out the door before she could catch up. He paused, panting. He just needed to slip between the barn wall and the kitchen garden and then -

A looming shadow blocked his path.

Yaren smiled, and tossed the apple she had been eating over her shoulder.

“My lady,” she said, drawing another pair of scissors from her pocket, “wants you to know that she was not - what’s the phrase? - ‘born yesterday.’”

I made a survey about fanfiction bookmarking habits with the goal of finding out how people save and share fanfiction. I had 107 responses and 9 questions, two of which were completely qualitative, but 7 were quantitative with an option for qualitative responses. This was a rough initial survey and they're biased towards tumblr and tiktok users because those are the platforms I put them out on. This data should not be applied to the whole fan community, but they're interesting nonetheless

I promised y'all graphs so I'm going to throw them under the read more because oh boy

Analysis of the data but I encourage you to look at the results and draw your own conclusions: Fans tend to have some method of saving fanfics that they really enjoy. The bookmark feature on ao3 is the most used but it tends to be a passive action similar to pushing kudos rather than commenting or is used only for fics that are really special. If ao3 bookmarks aren't the primary means of saving a fic, downloading or bookmarking the tab tends to be the most common. Fans seem to be more open to talking about reading fanfic both online and with irl friends although this is still some level of secrecy around it. It seems social media has an impact on what fics get read

Goncharov posting brings a completely different new interesting angle to your what is fanfiction question. If we agree that fanfic has to be based or inspired by a different media, then what is goncharov fanfiction? Does the media have to exist for it to have a transformative Fandom?

aaaah anon I love you so much thank you so much for bringing this to me!! Okay, so my definition of fanfiction is fiction written by self-professed fans in a fandom specific context. So I'm a fan of Spider-Man, I write fiction about Spider-Man to post on ao3 for other fans to read. If marvel hired me to write a Spider-Man comic, I'm still a fan who is writing fiction, but I'm no longer doing it in the context of fandom.

So with that definition in mind, we need to categorize what the fuck Goncharov is. So in my mind, Goncharov is a meme, but it is also the practice of collective storytelling, really no different functionally than Arthurian folklore or any mythology that's been taken out of its original context. We all looked at a pair of boots and said let's write a story together, that's not that different than looking at a mountain and connecting it to the legitimacy of English kings. Goncharov is myth/folklore just very recent and on the internet.

So there is fanfic of Goncharov on ao3. If someone calls their own work fanfic, then it is fanfic. People are not writing these fanfics to add to the folklore, they're not claiming that what they're writing down is canon, rather they're claiming to be building off the canon (that doesn't exist in the sense of the movie, but does exist in the sense that we've all agreed on some sense of truth to it). But because the transformation of the fiction is happening at the same time as the fiction is being defined, the transformation is influencing the collective telling. What is the truth of this story we've all agreed on and what is the fan interpretation in the form of fiction?

In the sense that fandom culture is baked into the creation of this collective myth, all of Goncharov is fanfiction. But because we all have equal creative power over the truth of the fiction, none of Goncharov is fanfiction. Both things are true at the same time. Schrodinger's fanfic if you will.
