Entirely selfish question. What winter/ early spring holidays do you think Rohan would have?

Oh, hey! I’ve got a google doc of Rohan holidays that I add to from time to time as I’m thinking, so below are the ones that I currently have that would fall in the late winter/early spring time. (It doesn’t include Yule, because I know I have an old Yule post *somewhere* and I can’t find it now because Tumblr search is garbage, but if I can I’ll edit this and re-tag you!) I hope any/some of this is helpful to your purposes!!!

Rohan Winter/Spring Holidays

As with almost all big holidays in any culture, most of them have gathering with family and friends and eating together as big components, but I listed off a few specific practices for each one. If anyone else has their own ideas to throw in, please do!

The Big Hunt 🏹 (mid-February)

-Hunts happen year-round, but this one is designated as a special opportunity to honor Béma, the Great Hunter. (Mid-February because it helps to break up the doldrums of mid-winter.)

-Formal offerings to Béma are made before the hunters set out in the morning. These include hunting implements (arrow heads, etc.) and artifacts from prior hunts (something carved from bone or antler, perhaps), and they’re buried at the edge of a forest (or, lacking a forest, under a tree) for Béma to take at his leisure.

-While the hunters are out at work, there is winter outdoor revelry and hot drinks around fires while everyone watches for their eventual return.

-Traditionally, every time a hunter misses his quarry on the Big Hunt (an off-target arrow or spear throw, for example), they have to give up an article of clothing. It’s great fun to await the riders and see at a glance who was successful and who is almost naked (and very cold!). (Don’t feel sorry for them, the almost naked ones get wrapped up in furs and are given a good seat by a fire and lots of attention from sympathetic caretakers.)

-Items from the Big Hunt (the spears used, or the bones of the kill from that particular outing) are kept to be the next year’s offering.

New Year 🎉 (March 25)

-From the end of the Third Age, the Rohirrim follow along with Gondor’s practice of celebrating the new year on the anniversary of the destruction of the ring. 

-There are military-style parades in all the cities with all the marshals and captains in their best uniforms and all the éoreds decked out in their own finery.

-There’s a big emphasis on the performance of songs and poems that commemorate the events of the War of the Ring. Children put on little pageants to reenact Rohan’s biggest contributions to the war, including the arrival of the Rohirrim at Minas Tirith and Éowyn’s slaying of the Witch King (they all fight over who gets to be Éowyn).

-It’s also important to them to have official representatives of the elves, dwarves and hobbits present, since they’re commemorating something that affected all the free peoples. Legolas, Gimli and Merry often filled these roles in Edoras during their lifetimes.

-Families of those who lost loves ones in the war take this as a day to visit their graves and remember their sacrifice. The simbelmynë is a symbol of the new year in Rohan as a consequence.

Field of Celebrant Day 🗡️ (April 15)

-This day celebrates the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, which led to the Oath of Eorl and the founding of Rohan.

-The day is greeted with the ritual blowing of horns, the traditional sign of the arrival of the Rohirrim army.

-Acts of service are a major point of emphasis, meant to honor Eorl’s act of service in coming to the aid of Gondor. Everyone is expected to do something for either a friend, family member or even a stranger.

-Tokens in the form of little red arrows are exchanged between friends, again symbolizing the day’s emphasis on friendship and alliance.

-The king travels to the Field of Celebrant, where the battle took place, and is traditionally met by the steward (or, later, the king) of Gondor to perform a little ceremony in honor of the event and in reaffirmation of the alliance.

Start of Spring 🌸 (varies from early March to late April, depending on the year)

-In late winter, Rohirrim start to tie a small ribbon to any tree or bush branch where they see the first hint of buds of new growth to come. When the branches are full with ribbons, the queen (or, outside of Edoras, a senior woman) designates spring to have arrived and a festival is held.

-The festival revolves around cleansing rituals. Those near rivers may take a ritual dip. In other places, they may steam certain herbs and plants with cleansing properties. Everyone opens all the doors and windows of their homes to let in the fresh spring air.

-Flowers are used to make wearable decoration - crowns or necklaces or sashes - and everyone is expected to sport something.

-The associated feast emphasizes using the remainder of winter stores to make room for spring’s new produce (there are contests for who can make the most creative use out of those leftovers!), and it ends with bonfires made from the remains of the winter wood stockpile.

Festival of Horses 🐎 (typically early May)

-The timing is meant to coincide, as best as possible, with the start of the spring foaling season when the new horses are born

-Any foal born during the festival itself is considered especially lucky and can be auctioned for an absurdly high price

-The festival itself begins with the annual rounding up of some of the feral horses that have traditionally lived in all the plains and valleys of Rohan. Any captured horses are run through the river for cleaning and then auctioned off to the breeders and trainers. Watching the auction is considered high entertainment and can get very animated.

-The day itself is dominated by competitions of horses and horsemanship. There are judged shows for best horse and finest horse crafts (tack, etc.), and there are races, jumping competitions and contests for the most daring/unique horsemanship skills. Prizes are highly valued and bragged about nonstop for the whole year.

🏹JJBA Golden Arrow AU🏹

Synopsis:

What if, in another timeline, Diavolo uses King Crimson Requiem to disappear from reality... But in doing so, something goes incredibly wrong. The energy from the arrow disperses stand energy throughout the world and Giorno Giovanna inherits vampirism from his father DIO! He is turned into a Dhampir as he is half human.

Polnereff is unfortunately killed in this AU (Sorry Polnareff nation I've failed us) due to Diavolo gaining the power of the arrow.

Giorno has learnt how to heal at the start of the AU due to an accident he had as a child (getting into a knife fight with a mafioso child.)

☾Dark Cacao kingdom. Better future au So ever since I played CRK, and since I've been on tumblr, I have had the idea of a 'Better future' au for the Dark Cacao kingdom. And here it is:

So this au is where Dark Choco never found the strawberry jam sword, and remained the prince of the Dark Cacao kingdom. Dark Cacao is a sweet father to his son. And he is overprotective of his son. Ever since his wife (Who I'll call Lavender snowdrop cookie) died due to a fatal illness shortly after Dark Choco was born. Keeping Dark Choco within the citadel walls since birth. But despite this, Dark Cacao and Dark Choco have a healthy father-son relationship. Dark Choco has been childhood friends with Caramel arrow and Crunchy chip since they were kids, 5 to 7 years old, Dark Choco was 7, Caramel arrow was 6, and Crunchy chip was 5 when they met. As they grew up into teens, Dark Choco and Caramel arrow developed feelings for each other. Crunchy chip supports them fully like a good wingman :>. So now, onto the headcanons! A master in shadowy magic, witchcraft, preparing sweets, creating incenses, and his entire following of disciples, shamans, and priests within the kingdom are very loyal and will follow his persuasive leadership.

Enjoys a nice affogato dessert every now and then.

Sees Dark Choco cookie, Caramel arrow cookie, and Crunchy chip cookie as obstacles in his plan, but cant do anything about it since they always foil his plans.

Affogato wants to get rid of the prince but if he tried to, Dark Cacao cookie would make sure Affogato is as good as crumbs.

Isn't able to manipulate Dark Cacao cookie like he does in the canon but he manipulates the king by reminding the king of his late wife and how the prince could fall prey to danger.

After Years as a Greek Mythology Enthusiast, I Finally Read the Iliad! 📚✨

So, after years of loving Greek mythology, I finally read The Iliad for the first time! 🤯 Along the way, I took some fun notes and had a lot of thoughts. 💭 I had some amount of mythological knowledge going in, but this was my very first time experiencing the actual text. So enjoy watching me discover (and occasionally be baffled by) this very, very old book! 🏛️

The Greeks are also called "Achaeans," "Argives," and "Danaans." ⚔️

The Trojans are also called "Dardanians," "Dardans," and "Dardanids." 🏹

After an easy-to-read Book 1, I had to struggle to get through Book 2. 📖😅

I just read two more books (3, 4), and I found them surprisingly understandable. I read the duel between Menelaus and Paris, and now I’m in the middle of the battle caused by the broken oath. ⚔️

I just finished Book 8. The Greek gods are certainly meddlesome. 😤 Throughout these books, humans are pawns for the amusement of immortal beings. The gods decide whether or not to accept offerings and whether or not to pity mortals. These gods are human-like, and yet they are worse than humans precisely because they are more than human.

The same flaws in a king and in a shepherd are worse in the former than in the latter. Likewise, the sins of a god are worse than the sins of a mortal man.

The most surprising thing about my reading so far is how much respect and dignity the Trojans are given—almost to the point where I feel like they are the true central heroes of the story. 🏅

In Book 9, Achilles finally appears—the best character. 👑💪

Odysseus is much braver in a warrior sense than I think he is typically portrayed in modern adaptations.

Aegis: a goatskin shield bearing the emblem of Athena or Zeus. 🛡️🐐

Greaves: a type of metal shin armor worn by Greek soldiers, like knee guards. 🦵

I don’t think any book I’ve read about the Iliad mentions that the idea for Patroclus to dress as Achilles and lead the Myrmidons comes from Nestor, the wise old horseman. In the versions of the story I’ve read, I think it’s usually Patroclus’ own idea. 🤔

I keep confusing Nestor with Phoenix.

I just finished Book 10, and poor Patroclus has finally died. 😢 The existence of gods is so unfair. They decide everything, and all that’s left for the poor mortals is to suffer through whatever they’re given. Patroclus' death was so unjust! 💔

With all these lion comparisons, I went to look up whether there used to be lions in Greece—because there definitely aren’t any now. And it turns out, there actually were! 🦁 The Iliad: great for learning history, mythology, and even biology. 📚🧬

Book 11 was full of fights between the gods. It was a lot of fun! 🎉⚡

Hector finally died in Book 22, and it was much more moving than I expected. 😭💔

Tripod: a precious three-footed vessel. ⚱️

"The blessed gods who are forever." This is one of those repeated phrases throughout the poem (there are many like this), and it really struck me. This text is around 2,800 years old (more or less), and in it, the gods are eternal—long after belief in them has faded. I don’t know, reading this phrase makes me feel something… maybe melancholy? 😔

OMG, the line "I kissed the hands of the man who killed my son" wasn’t just written for the Troy movie! It actually appears in the original text! That is awesome! 🤯🎬

Cassandra appeared! But isn’t she the one who could see the future, but no one believed her because of a curse? That’s not mentioned here. Where does that story come from? 🔮

And by the way, what was that story a few books ago about the time Apollo and Poseidon had to serve someone in Troy and were denied their payment? That sounded super interesting! I need to find out where that’s written.

Hector’s funeral happened, and I’ll admit—I’m a bit emotional. Very unexpectedly, I feel like I might actually cry. 😭💔

IT ENDS HERE? But what about Achilles’ death at the hands of Paris and Apollo, who strikes from afar (I had to use it, and from now on I’m always going to refer to Athena as Pallas Athena), and the Trojan Horse, and the sack of the city?? Where does that appear? In the Odyssey? In the Aeneid? 🤔

I absolutely loved reading the Iliad! 💖

For fans of Epic: The Musical: I loved when Ajax got upset about tripping (because of Athena) in the race against Odysseus during Patroclus' funeral games and complained that Athena mothers him, always stepping in to help him! 😂🙌
