Honesty, growth, and accountability

Following last week's surge in honesty (Nick to Boston, Sand and Nick, Ray and Sand, Mew and Ray, Mew to Cheum, etc.) we had some more this episode:

Ray making the first steps to go to rehab, and acknowledging the dynamic he and Sand have and what Sand has brought to his life (though not to Sand yet)

Ray throwing out some of his alcohol

Boston reconciling with Nick, being honest about missing him (and Nick being honest about missing him back), Boston saying he will take better care of the things he owns (Nick) in future

Nick and Dan having a conversation about their kiss

Nick being honest about his insecurities with Dan (no one liked him back or asked him out, the Kinky Head nickname, etc.)

Top and Mew talking at the pool and Mew being upfront about giving Top a second chance

Ray pushing Sand to talk to his dad, but acknowledging that it is not his place to make that decision for Sand, ultimately it is up to Sand if he doesn't want to

Ray's dad frankly confronting Ray about his alcoholism

Boeing telling Top straight up he initially approached Mew for revenge on Top but now he is legit into Mew (though of course, do we believe him)

This episode Mew says "People learn from their mistakes, don't they?". He was talking about wake boarding here but I mean, obviously that's not all he is talking about. And I think it provides a very good summation for the series - we've been wondering from the beginning if this show is about accountability, about these (young) characters learning from their mistakes and coming to terms with their actions having consequences (see some talk about that here, here, here, and here).

Consequences (and hypocrisy)

There was quite a bit about consequences this episode, as seems to be the theme for this latter half of Only Friends. Ray and Sand discuss consequences of Ray's continued drinking and make plans to go to rehab. Nick accepts the consequences of his actions and continues to pursue Dan and leave Boston behind. Top faces the consequences of his actions as Mew and Boeing meet outside his apartment door (and Mew and Boeing come up with a plan to exact further revenge).

The big example of consequences this week was the aftermath of Atom and Boston's hook up. After Boston made it clear last episode he agreed to a one time hookup and has no interest in repeating, Atom has been stewing. When Cheum finds him and asks what is wrong he lies and says Boston tricked him into going home with him, taking nude photos of him, and sleeping with him. Atom says he was drunk for the whole interaction and that Boston is blackmailing him with photos to get Atom to have sex with him again.

@wen-kexing-apologist talked about the respectability politics angle to this the other day, how Atom gets believed and Boston gets doubted because Atom has been "respectable" [monogamous] and Boston has been "suspicious" [promiscuous] in their sex lives thus far (though obviously, Cheum is coming at this from a very personal place of wanting to protect her brother, which is fully understandable, and initially has little reason to doubt her brother's claim) I pointed out Cheum's choice of wording in that scene ("Atom has always liked girls. What did you do to him?") and how it hearkens back to narratives of queer people as predatory, etc. Other people like @jojotichakorn (here) and @burnsuncomet (here) have written about that idea too.

I'd like to consider this through a consequences lens: Cheum, Mew, and Ray have accused Boston of sexual impropriety at minimum and rape at worst in front of a client (depends on how long the client was listening in). Boston has been hiding his sexuality and sex life from his father and the world at large, something he is so careful about he doesn't even permit vaguely incriminating photos with Nick. Boston has been recorded having sex twice without his consent, and those tapes have circulated/he has been threatened with them. Now Boston has been accused of rape, and specifically of raping a man. The consequences and repercussions of this for Boston specifically are immense. Atom felt embarrassed at being rejected by Boston and wanted to lash out, wanted to avoid accountability (and possible judgement) for his actions, so he created a narrative where he was the victim. Maybe Atom intended it to be a little lie to absolve him of responsibility and didn't register the magnitude of these accusations, maybe he did recognize the severity of his claims and did intend for this to be a serious method of exacting revenge and making Boston hurt for the embarrassment he felt, but regardless of intention, this is way out of proportion. We will see if these accusations of rape spread or grow in intensity in the episodes to come, but there has been at least one consequence so far - the friend group have officially kicked Boston out of hostel project, so presumably he has to scramble to find something else quick or else his graduation is in jeopardy.

There's also something that strikes me about this, which I can hopefully express satisfactorily:

In the actual events (though from Atom's perspective): Boston doesn't want to have sex with Atom again, Atom wants to have sex with Boston again. To Atom, the only acceptable outcome is Boston having sex/a lasting relationship with Atom, even if this goes against Boston's wishes. To Atom, Boston should place Atom's desires and feelings above his own, Boston should give up his autonomy to Atom. Boston's no should not be respected; in fact Boston's daring to say no is so unacceptable it deserves punishment (accusations of rape).

In the narrative Atom constructs: Atom doesn't want to have sex with Boston again, Boston wants to have sex with Atom again. Boston tries to force a repeat through blackmail against Atom's wishes - Boston places his desires and feelings above Atom, Boston removed/removes Atom's autonomy (Atom was drunk, Atom is being blackmailed). Atom's no should be respected, Boston ignoring this no is so unacceptable it deserves punishment (social shunning, kicking Boston off the group project, potentially other repercussions).

There's something there as well about monogamy/lasting relationships vs. promiscuity/ephemeral hookups there too:

In the actual events (though from Atom's perspective): Atom wanting a repeat, wanting a lasting relationship (of sorts) after a night together is fine and normal. In fact, Boston not wanting a lasting relationship is weird and bad and deserves to be punished. Atom pushing for a lasting arrangement (despite Boston not being interested - e.g. Boston not answering Atom's messages, Atom showing up at Boston's house uninvited) is understandable, flattering, and logical/to be expected.

In the narrative Atom constructs: Boston wanting a repeat, wanting a lasting relationship (of sorts) is wrong. Atom is perfectly understandable for not wanting a lasting relationship, not wanting a relationship after one hookup is perfectly normal, and Boston trying to force one on Atom (through blackmail) is sinister and deserves to be punished.

See the hypocrisy? See how Atom's accusations are a twisted version of what actually happened/what Atom thinks happened? In Atom's constructed narrative, everything he does is what Boston did in real life, but to Atom, Boston actually doing those things in real life is unacceptable and deserving of punishment.

One final note on hypocrisy - I also wanted to point out Ray's call out of Sand in this episode: "You make alcohol. You want me to quit drinking but you are selling liquor". We here on Tumblr have mentioned this before - interesting to have Ray say it so explicitly in show.

Random thoughts

Insecurity

Mew says he is giving Top another chance, but if he does something again Mew will blame himself. This is an interesting insight into Mew, and it reminded me of what he said when he was confronting Top about sleeping with Boston back in episode 6:

Mew is insecure and hard on himself. When it comes down to it, he blames himself for things going wrong. Sure he lashes out and has been plotting revenge for episodes and episodes now, but at his core there is part of him who thinks it is his fault this has been happening - he wasn't good enough. Makes sense for a character who wants to be top of the class academically, who has such a superiority complex around sex and relationships, and so on.

I will also draw a parallel here to Ray, who also is very hard on himself - he calls himself a burden, he constantly asks Sand to tell him the bad things about him, to hit him, to yell at him, etc. Ray thinks he deserves bad treatment, and one of the reasons he's struggled with Sand is because he can't/couldn't believe Sand would care about him.

Comparison

Lots of stuff about comparison this episode too with Boeing - Boeing looking like a Mew-Top hybrid, Boeing going toe to toe with Mew during bar trivia, Boeing constantly commenting on the similarities between he and Mew ("Top, you always date smart people", "I'm snooping on your Insta too", both of them liking plants, Boeing saying Mew is an upgraded version of himself), Boeing noting that he was Top's "record-setting" 3 month relationship which is the milestone Mew hopes to beat, and so on and so forth.

Labels

We have been talking about the limits of labels (see here and here), and how assigning labels to people (and letting that permanently/completely shape your understanding of them) is connected to control. I wanted to point out how this plays a role in the Atom and Boston plot here:

Cheum assumes Atom is heterosexual (he's only dated girls before)

Cheum assumes Boston must have forced Atom to sleep with him (Boston is a slut, Boston is gay (and Atom is not), etc.)

Boston is readily accepted as the aggressor by Ray and Mew as well, because Boston is known to be sexual, Boston is the slut

Obviously, enforcing such strict labels does real harm: Boston has to be the bad guy because he is a slut, Boston has to be the one who initiated the sex because he likes sex, Atom has to be the victim/can't have initiated because he is straight. Forcing people into strict labels doesn't allow people to change or experiment, and can make people jump to conclusions about events.

Recording and digital media

More Instagram mentions! This time, Mew goes through Boeing's Instagram profile (much like Nick went through Top's way back when), he accidentally likes a post which alerts Boeing to his scrolling, and Boeing reveals he has also been looking through Mew's profile. Again, we see Instagram as a means of surveillance (here and here), and one the characters aren't necessarily thinking consciously about. Boston finds Ray, Mew, and Cheum at the hostel based on Cheum's Instagram story; Ray finds Sand and Nick based on Nick's Instagram story, Nick figures out Top and Boston's connection/Boston's feelings for Top through Boston's Instagram comments; and now we have Boeing figuring out Mew is looking him up (and thus maybe thinking of him as a rival, being curious about him, etc.) through Instagram likes. Social media is omnipresent in these young people's lives and they may not be thinking about what their usage is actually revealing about them.

And of course, we have more about photography. Boston uses his lock screen photo of Nick (the photo he took when we first learned Boston likes keeping photo mementos of people he has slept with and that he doesn't like photos taken of himself) to signal his feelings for Nick, in a direct parallel to how Nick used a sexy photo of himself on Boston's phone to indicate his interest in Boston way at the beginning of the series. We see Boston taking photos of a client - photography is more than a hobby, more than something he does with people he has sex with. And finally, there are the photographs of Atom that Atom asked Boston to take of him. Atom claimed they were nudes, they clearly were not. Those photographs are a record of what happened that night, something that pokes holes in Atom's story (Atom looks content and carefully posed in them, Atom is not naked). Of course, pictures can be edited and fabricated (or destroyed) - they aren't as permanent or infallible as one might think - but they are a permanent, material, and external method of capturing and recording a moment in time (permanent vs ephemeral).

Boredom

Finally, we've been tossing around the idea of boredom, and there's been discussion of substance abuse and how Ray seeks to escape in alcohol and drugs, so I wanted to point out something Ray says after his first appointment:

Ray found the appointment boring and long - he has a hard time dealing with boredom, he isn't good at being patient. We've been talking about the YOLO attitudes of these young folks, these young RICH folks who have most of what they need right at their finger tips at all times, who don't have to consider consequences in ways that other people do. There is also of course the connection to be made here between Ray asking Sand to join a session with him and Ray asking Sand to come with him to his court mandated community service.

Funny you should ask, because I was just listening to a podcast episode about favorite fandom ships, and I had actually started making my own list that I was going to post anyway! And I don’t mind you asking, since I don't really have people to talk to about this stuff. I like looking at your blog and seeing other people’s answers too!

Here's my top ten! These are going to be kind of repetitive because I’ve already talked about these fandoms so much, but these are my favorite CANON SHIPS, meaning they’re actually together or at least have kissed or something. I have a million non canon ships.

10. Jem, Will, and Tessa from The Infernal Devices- I wanted to keep myself to one ship per fandom, but I couldn’t help it, I just love this OT3 so much. I don’t care what anyone says, they are a poly relationship, not a love triangle (and I maintain that if Jem wasn’t already dying, he and Will would have realized they loved each other romantically, and their parabatai bond would have fucked them over eventually). They all have an equal amount of love and respect for each other, and they balance each other so well. And I appreciate that none of them are relegated to being “the overly jealous partner who ruins everything for the other two.” We get time with each of them and love them all equally.

9. Patroclus and Achilles from The Song of Achilles- Call me a basic bitch, but these two are unparalleled in terms of doomed romances. I love friends to lovers, and the story is so widely spanning that it gives their relationship such gravitas.

8. Yona and Hak from Akatsuki no Yona- Still haven’t finished the manga, but these two are god tier for fantasy romances. I love that they completely lose their minds over each other whenever they are not within arm’s reach, and they’re another great example of childhood friends to lovers. Hak’s “teasing” attitude in the beginning of the series wasn’t my favorite, but it’s funny to look back on it later, knowing that he’s so in love with Yona and would murder the first person to disrespect her. 

7. Shigure and Akito from Fruits Basket- Because why would I choose one of the normal, healthy relationships when I could go for one of the most fucked up romances in shoujo? These two…I don’t even know where to start. They’re the definition of toxic for most of the series, but by the end, you’re really rooting for them to be together with the Sohma family curse broken. Shigure is desperate for the curse to be broken so he can prove to Akito that he loves her without them being tied together by fate. Akito feels like she needs the curse because otherwise everyone will leave her forever. Akito sleeps with Kureno. Shigure sleeps with her mom. They’re “gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss” meets “mansplain, manipulate, man-whore.”

6. Sasaki and Miyano from Sasaki to Miyano- What can I say? They’re just so freaking cute! I think they represent the romance a lot of people in fandom want, because they bond over manga and slowly come to learn more about each other. Sasaki never pressures Miyano to return his feelings, and I appreciate the patience he has in waiting for Miyano to give him an honest answer to his confession.

5. Jesper and Wylan from Six of Crows- Another basic answer, but these two are so entertaining whenever they’re together. I love that Jesper starts out teasing Wylan relentlessly about looking like a pampered rich kid (despite the fact that Wylan also lives on the streets), but Wylan deadass saves the group time and time again, so Jesper comes to respect him more. This is how you do teasing in a relationship: they get under each other’s skin but aren’t complete dicks to each other. And I appreciate that the Shadow and Bone show changes their dynamic slightly while keeping the chaotic duo the same at their core. 

4. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from the various Percy Jackson series- The pinnacle of middle grade/YA romance. Nobody else is doing it like these two. What works about their relationship is that we truly believe their friendship as 12 year olds before they start to have feelings for each other. So many times, authors shove two characters together because they feel like they need a romance, but Percy/Annabeth progress so naturally. They tease each other, but they know they’re both capable individuals at the end of the day (and their wildly different brands of intelligence work so well), and as long as they’re together, they can get through anything.

3. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian from Heaven Official's Blessing- I’ve shipped these two for much less time than these other ships, but they have smashed their way to my top 3 ships of all time. How do you compete with a god who’s fallen from grace and his eternally devoted follower who would burn the world down to see them smile? How do you compete with Hua Cheng, who has stayed by Xie Lian’s side for hundreds of years out of pure devotion, but not in a creepy or weird stalkery way? I think the biggest thing this ship has going for it is its sincerity. Hua Cheng doesn’t stay with Xie Lian because he’s hoping Xie Lian will fall for him eventually. He doesn’t believe he’s even worthy of Xie Lian’s love. But he stays anyway, because that’s what unconditional love is like. You stay when the one you love is at their lowest and you can’t do anything to help. You stay when they’re fighting the heavenly emperor and kick ass alongside them. You hold an umbrella over their head when it's raining blood and carry them across the ground when it's littered with corpses.

2. Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments/Shadowhunters- These two have destroyed me over the years. I think the best thing about this ship is how they bring out the best in each other and have changed each other’s lives for the better. Magnus is so outgoing and free spirited, but with Alec, he wants to “settle down” (lol) and raise a family. Alec started as the personification of the frowny face emoji, stuck in the closet with a stick up his ass, but now he’s basically running the shadowhunter world. They’re the perfect example of “opposites attract” who have changed their world simply by being in love.

1. Damen and Laurent from Captive Prince- Speaking of couples who change their world simply by being in love…I don’t know if any other ship will top them for me. All the other enemies to lovers ships can get the fuck out. They’re nothing compared to Damen and Laurent. So many times, people will write “enemies to lovers” or “hate to love” relationships that are just two characters snipping at each other or bullying each other for no reason. Get that shit out of here. These two start with the purest, most honest loathing possible. They hurt each other in countless ways, but they come to learn each other slowly. They have every reason to be enemies, but they come through each layer of trauma with love for each other. They’re the kings (pun intended) of this trope.

Honorable mentions: Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper- They’re just so wholesome and sweet. The progression of their relationship from like to love is so realistic, and they’re basically the live action/book version of Sasaki and Miyano.

Ronan and Adam from The Raven Cycle- (haven’t read the last book in the Dreamer trilogy, but I hope nothing bad happens). Their differing brands of chaotic energy compliment each other perfectly, and as a reader, the slow realization that Ronan is in love with Adam was so eye opening and satisfying in a way few other series have been able to capture.

Of course, it's okay to ask multiple questions! Always! But especially with Niles, I think I could happily do this whole list with him lol

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Human. Likes whiskey. Not a people person. Awkward dancer. Doesn't discriminate... (Would only ever lead something if the circumstances pushed me but I would probably slay it :P) You know, pretty common stuff.

I tried to keep that answer strictly about canon, because I do tend to project a lot on him as you know. I think, Luke Arnold was really good at making the characters relatable in many ways to many different people. On one hand, obviously, Niles is the rich evil industrialist, and that is not relatable, only in the sense that we're all so sick of capitalism at this point. But at the same time, him being human is so relatable. If you pay attention, I think it's very clear that he's not a second, third-generation pampered rich kid.

Growing up pre-Coda as a human in the FPA is not a first-world experience. That's the world of the Magum. And I don't necessarily mean to tie it to specific countries from our world. For example, Weatherly I would imagine could be very relatable to someone from a small town or even cult situation. But what I'm trying to say is that pre-Coda the Magum were the special, the rich, the powerful, the ones with the resources and advanced technology... There are finite ways to react to that if you are not in that club, and each could be relatable in its own way. There are the people in Weatherly who stick their heads in the sand, there is Fetch who goes starry-eyed and tries to assimilate, there is the human army with its hate and thirst for revenge, and there is Niles's greed and ambition to be top dog. It's a spectrum.

All that is to say I guess I can think of a few scenarios that would make Niles a little mean and a little too unapologetic like he is. That doesn't mean I condone his actions. He should do better, but still...

(Oh dear, here I go ranting about him again. As I've said, I'm happy to answer multiple questions. I want to add that I can't be held accountable for the post length tho xD)

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

Hmmm... this is difficult. One thing that pops into my mind: in the audiobooks, Luke gave Niles this very delightful little Southern drawl, and I like to try and maybe hint or recreate it. I'm very bad at it, but I enjoy trying lol (And it's not like there would be an actual American South in this universe so...)

What do I not like... writing about him? I don't know... I wouldn't like writing or reading him as a one-dimensional villain, I think. I can't think of a better answer right now ^^"

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

Gentleman John Marcone from the Dresden Files, of course. They are both middle-aged bastard men in suits, who are the covert, de facto rulers of their cities. They both have deliciously antagonistic relationships with the protagonists (with even more deliciously gay undertones lol). While Johnny is a mob boss, and Niles technically isn't, he sure as hell operates as one.

That said, even though Thurston isn't as smooth with weapons, I like him waaaay more than I like Marcone ^^"

DYLAN’S DELIVERY - SOUTH SIDE EDITION

Christmas Eve: Dylan leaves most gifts on the doorstep with a knock, heading off before she can be too caught up in chat. Lots to deliver after all. She however does risk wearing elf slippers with bells on that risk her being caught in the act, or slip in the snow.

O’Connor home

Two cake boxes are left on their doorstep along with a shared Christmas card. Angel’s cake is, as always, a lemon cake. Though they aren’t necessarily talking Dylan would never leave Angel off her list, in fact it’s the first cake she made. The second is a Irish whiskey soaked chocolate cake for Finn. Dylan has tried this recipe before and failed, always promising to do it again but putting it off. She finally pulled it off with the help of Cora. In the card she tells them to look after themselves, to not steal each others cakes, and of course, have a happy holiday. @angeloconnor​ @finn-oconnor​

Anderson home

There are three gifts left on the doorstep but only one card. The first box is a cake box with DJ’s name on it, an several threats to Danny and Dusty if they get to it including at least two descriptions of how she will hang them by their ball sacks. Dylan has made him a rich chocolate cake in the shape of a heart. The second gift is the largest of them with the surprising tag of Dusty written on it. Dylan has gotten an array of soaps for Dusty, with a print out labeled ‘bathing for dummies’ that are paired with images on how to wash ones body. She expects him to be the best smelling Anderson in 2023. The last gift is clearly added as a last thought, a single beer can with a bow on it and Danny’s name written in marker on the top. She didn’t even give him the full six pack. Vaisman home

Dylan takes a moment at Kenzie’s house to handover the gifts, saying hello to Kenzie’s mother in the process. For Kenzie she has given the woman a soft grey bath robe with a hood. It’s something Kenzie can lounge around in or rug up with on a cold night. She suggests they do a pamper night when they both have time. For Koda Dylan gives Kenzie a sheepish smile before handing over a box of shoes, but these arent just any shoes. Not only do they light up but they have wheels on them, which could easily go bad with how active Koda is or help use up some energy. Time will tell. Dylan offers two cards to the family - one to Kenzie that is more personal about how she is thankful to have Kenzie back in her life and how this year has been a lot of change for both of them but ultimately it’s been worth it all to be united. The second is for Koda signed by the one and only Santa telling Koda he’s a rockstar and should always listen to his Mama. @kenzievaisman​

Day home

Dylan drops off the first of her hot chocolate bombs for Harley. It’s a set of six chocolate spheres with reindeer faces on them. When dropped into warm milk it melts to release chocolate powder and marshmallows. For Olivia she gifts a little art kit with pencils and markers inside - the type that everyone seems to get as a kid. The card tells the girls to stay warm this winter. @harley--day​

Trailer park residents

There are a serious of trailers Dylan stops at delivery gifts. First Hunters where she leaves a bottle of Jameson and a card that suggests he shares it with Finn for a slice of cake. She also reminds him how handsome he looks in a suit - never forgetting their paths crossing at the dance. @hunter-cooke​

Second is Lyra’s shed. Though tempted to stop and say hello Dylan has too many people to see and not enough time so she leaves the way too heavy metal tub of lollipops at Lyra’s door with the card stuck on top of the lid. Inside it reads how wonderful she thought Lyra’s work had been and that she deserved a treat she could have whilst working. It was also a great excuse for Dylan to stop by in the future. @lyranelson

Third is the Cannon boys trailers. She first stops at Cash’s door to deliver his cranberry and apple pie in which she gets caught by him. Whilst they chat she leaves Striker his packet of beer and Dodge two soft jumpers she’d found at goodwill. The first jumper has a goose holding a knife with the word ‘Murder’ on it that Dylan quite frankly contemplated keeping for herself. The next is a nicer jumper he could wear in a nicer environment, and hopefully gets less holes than most of his clothes. Dylan finds herself giggling as she leaves Esmeray’s gift on her doorstep. Though majority of it is hot chocolate bombs, a set of six spheres made to look like reindeers that melt with warm milk to make the chocolaty drink, she’s thrown in an extra gift. A packet of chap sticks in different flavours, pairing it with a joke about whatever 2023 brought for Esmerary’s love life she was at least covered in the lip care. @esmeraykj​

Collins household

Along the lines of Esmerary and Harley, Dylan leaves Grayson a box of hot chocolate bombs but pairs his with a mug that reads ‘level up to Daddy’ with a game controller icon below the wording. Dylan had found it at Goodwill and couldn’t stop thinking how funny it would be for Grayson to drink from. She’d left the items by his door with a card that read: ‘prediction for 2023?’ and nothing else. She looked forward to his response. @grayscollins​

Though her last stop in the southside Celeste is no less important. Dylan drops by some lovely bath lotions they’d tried out at Dawson’s house - realising how much the girl had liked it when they’d been over. Even though they were a bit pricey she made sure her bestie could enjoy them any time. Why do many people think Gojou didn't get real love in his childhood, no real affection until Geto? Shoko's rarely a part of these talks. Where was it shown or even implied that Gojou had a bad or boring childhood? He was only shown to be a cocky child aware of his strength and position, that says nothing inherently bad about his family. We don't even see his family? Maybe he was pampered, maybe he was spoiled normal amount, maybe his family is the one that taught him to be rebellious there's so many possibilities besides copypasting generic sad shounen past. He wasn't a completely different man until Geto came into his life, he didn't turn 180° just for Geto.

yeah, shouko definitely gets ignored a lot in, like, every conversation about gojou's past---gojou had/has friends! getou just happened to be his best friend, but even that, and his character development, did not happen overnight.

while it was never stated explicitly that gojou had a bad childhood, given the major clans' general track record with their ideas of child-rearing, gojou's childhood probably wasn't...great. i don't think it was bad! he wouldn't have been abused the same way maki, mai, or touji were, and he probably wouldn't have had the issues surrounding duty and parentage that noritoshi does, but i don't think it was good, either. iirc your cursed technique manifests when you're about 5-6 and he's 1) the heir to the gojou family and 2) the most powerful sorcerer born in centuries; his power would have been (is) coveted and while he'd had a shit-ton of responsibility piled onto his shoulders, he's probably also been on that pedestal cementing him at the top for almost his entire life. people generally regard him with awe, fear, or jealousy/disdain, and most of that is dripping with respect that keeps him at an arms' length. we're not sure if that applied to his family, but because the clans tend to value tradition and respect pretty highly, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that they didn't make a huge effort to be super close to him, which, okay, objectively speaking, is kind of understandable, between the latter bits about tradition and because the idea of having an elementary schooler who can and is actively being trained to blow people to pieces just wandering around your house is a tad unnerving.

gojou being isolated from basically everyone else is a recurring subject, but he still would have absorbed the ideas about what it means to be strong and a sorcerer's role in relation to nonsorcerers. we see what he thought about these as a teenager in the beginning of his flashback arc and the ensuing argument with getou, but even though he obviously outgrew these ideas, he had to get them from somewhere. plus, some big parts of his personality---difficulty with relating to others and taking personal issues seriously (he can absolutely take things seriously, but he doesn't talk much about Stuff That Bothers Him except occasionally mentioning homicidal rage and he doesn't have a lot of tact when it comes to other people's problems, like not knowing what to do about getou spiraling before it was too late and people started dying and responding to yuuta's "the only reason i'm alive is because rika is physically preventing me from killing myself" with "okay, yikes"), how he handles the corruption in jujutsu society and the tendency for kids to get brutally murdered is to simply Train The Child Soldiers To Be Better And Intimately Aware Of Current Societal Flaws, and his tendency to sniff out young sorcerers and try to protect them from growing up too quickly like he did are all traits that he's developed and been changed by over the years but are still rooted, most likely, in how he was raised.

also, while he is definitely very privileged, i'm not entirely sure that he was spoiled, necessarily? i think entitled is a better word for it, and it was much more apparent as a teenager. he's a rich kid who's been told he's Destined 4 Great Things and he knows it's true because it's been painfully obvious his whole life, but! but!! though part of that mindset changing is probably due to growing out of it and seeing what the world is like, a lot of it had to be because of getou, shouko, and to a smaller degree, yaga. when they meet in high school they all treat him like Just Some Kid---a very powerful kid, but a kid nonetheless, and especially like a kid who's chewing gum open-mouthed and very loudly in public just for the sake of being obnoxious. yaga is his teacher and most immediate authority figure who generally treats his antics with exasperation. his new classmates can keep up with him in terms of personality and/or abilities: shouko and getou are very straightforward with what they think of him and have absolutely zero problems with calling him a bitch to his face, and not only are he and getou evenly matched, but shouko is one of the very, very few people who can do something he can't (at least at the beginning) because she has a reverse cursed technique. and neither of them were brought up the same way that he was! getou probably didn't even know who he was at first!

Out of so many great qualities that Hange has as a researcher that meets different set of people everyday, prejudice or preconceived judgment is completely absent in Hange’s demeanor and perspective

Hange doesn’t get a lot of free-time, even if they do, they’d wander around the city to do a little observation. But when the weather’s bad and they’re stuck at home with their pet lizard, they would logged into Quora to answer random internet questions

They’re an avid writer for National Geographic, and one time Hange won a pitch to make a documentary about an industrial city project they were working on

After the docu-series got broadcasted, Hange gained a small but passionate and loyal fans on the internet. You could even find a subreddit dedicated for Hange’s works

for real I want to be Hange. I want to have that kind of passion in life

A/N: I spent a lot of times thinking about Levi’s job in modern!au. Because here’s the thing, either we adopt his unfortunate childhood into its modern!au equivalent, or let’s just recreate his whole upbringing. But I think his personality stems from a specific things he experienced during childhood, so let’s not dismiss that.

Levi came from a struggling working class family. I reckon his parents might have had worked multiple jobs to sustain their living expense. Unfortunately they both passed away when Levi was very little, and left little to no inheritance

Levi’s parents were not close to their extended family, so when they died, Levi was admitted to the system and had to brace several foster families who didn’t really pay attention to him

Little Levi had come to realize that life’s all about survival and so he had been able to fend on for himself since very young age, he never asked for things

His uncle, Kenny, finally won custody over Levi when he was in elementary. Kenny made money from small-scale racketeering here and there. Levi never asked what he did for living, as long as he got food to eat and tuition paid off

Kenny was emotionally absent, but he loved spending time with the oddly quiet little child, teaching him a lot of crafts, from carpentering to how to flay pig’s skin

Levi didn’t really care about getting into college, and thought that he’d probably end up working for his uncle, so he put his bare minimum throughout school, although he was really good with numbers, especially in math, accounting and finance

One time in high school, Levi’s teacher asked him to sign up for the olympiad team, Levi turned it down because he thought that was a rich kid thing

He didn’t even apply for college, and worked odd jobs after high school. Probably working as cashiers or assistant to retail shop’s owner for couple of years, enough for him to afford a cheap studio apartment on his own

One of his bosses came to acknowledge Levi’s talent, and trusted him to handle the company’s accounting

By sheer luck, the company hit it big, and Levi found himself running the day-to-day accounting of mid-sized business with over 300 employees

He made good money already without a college degree, but with a new-found confidence Levi applied for uni, where he chose to study accounting (of course)

Although he was confident with his skills, he understood he needed to widen his horizon and network -- thus uni

Levi was one of the oldest members of his cohort in uni, but graduated with highest distinction

After graduating, with his skills and experience, it wasn’t hard for Levi to score a job at top accounting firm

There, he discovered an interest for forensic accounting, where through audits, analysis and investigation, he basically finds out if a company is doing fraud and embezzlement or not

This is where he came to know and get acquainted with Erwin and Hange (yippie they’re together again)

The firm he works for was assigned to investigate the finances of a troublesome company that had been sued by its workers for a jeopardizing working condition. Erwin was on the case, and Levi helped him with evidences for legal proceeding.

By chance, Erwin introduced Levi to Hange. At first, Levi would find Hange annoying and overtly energized, but after learning the things they have done, Levi grew to appreciate Hange’s passion (and secretly wants to have more of his positive outlook)

Levi is fucking good his job. In short amount of time, he could get a really ideal position in the office. He was almost foolproof, finding even the tiniest bit of discrepancy in his audit. He’d get assigned to the big league case/project.

Although really good at his job, he’s not a social person, especially in his office. He couldn’t understand the lavish lifestyle that finance and banking people often lead. He will only show up to office party if it is really necessary for him to show up (usually to receive some kind of informal awards for, again, being so fucking good) 

He leads a no-bullshit attitude at the office, largely because of his background. He is a self-made man, and is not easy to impress by some young executives from posh school that talk bigger than they can chew

His cold, seemingly dismissive attitude gained him a reputation of being scary, when actually he is very considerate

One of the things he enjoys doing is to actually teach, he really likes when a new kid at the office come to him with none of that pretentious, big talk, and really asks for his guidance. He would love to teach you a thing or two

He would frequently check on his mentee, just to keep up with their development

And he doesn’t take credit too. When his mentee makes a milestone, he believes it’s 100% your work

If you’re his mentee, he probably doesn’t give a crap about your personal life, so don’t expect him to make small talk about that (and don’t ask him about his personal life either). But he really cares about your skill and career development

Same with Erwin, he leads a very ordinary lifestyle. He doesn’t go out often and would rather reading detective novel with his cat on the couch

He likes to spend Sunday at Uncle Kenny’s house, because he finds himself worried about the old man very often. They became close as Levi grew

Overall, Levi is a really kind and caring person if you know how not to push his button

Description: Geralt learns a bit about Jaskier’s past, and realised he may not be the pampered rich kid he thought he was

~

The path doesn’t offer much in the way of privacy. Most of the time you’re sleeping outside after walking all day, so modesty tends to be thrown out the window pretty early on. Jaskier learnt this the hard way. Sure, he wasn’t exactly used to the life of a noble anymore, but at the very least he usually managed to fall into bed with someone who didn’t have to watch him bathe (although sometimes that was fun...).

He’d been travelling with Geralt for just under 2 weeks when his resolve finally broke.

“Geralt!” He shouted at the man riding on top of a chestnut coloured mare. “I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I need a bath. Is there a river or something near here?”

“Finally realised there’s not many options for cleanliness out here?” Geralt smirked at him. He fucking smirked. As though he’d been waiting for this for days, which he probably had.

“You don’t have to look so smug about it, let’s just find somewhere and get it over with. I fear I’m beginning to smell like one of those monsters you hunt.”

A few minutes later, Geralt walked them over to a small clearing with a stream nearby. He dismounted and began rooting through his bags for an apple for Roach. Meanwhile Jaskier, who cared more about being clean than being stark naked in front of another man, was already beginning to strip off his clothes and fold them on the grass. Geralt began to turn away to offer the bard at least a small amount of privacy, when he saw a messy scar on the left side of the bards chest. It looked as though it was from a knife, or possibly a sword. The bard looked no older than 18, how could someone have tried to kill him already?

He was pulled out of his thoughts by Jaskier rushing into the stream and dunking under the water. He quickly shook his head and carried on feeding Roach, trying to push down the feeling of...sadness? Was that the right word? It wasn’t like he actually liked the bard. Just didn’t particularly want him to die. Or get hurt. Or lose the best years of his life travelling with a Witcher when he could be playing at courts, he was more than talented enough.

Oh fuck, Geralt liked the bard.

“Are you going to ask, then?” Jaskier called from the stream, almost making Geralt flinch.

“Ask about what?”

“My scar. I saw you staring. I’m sure you of all people are used to being asked about things like that.”

Geralt tried not to cringe at that. He was used to it, his body was littered with scars from various monsters and people he’d encountered over the years. It’s not something he’d wish on anybody.

“How did it happen? Get into a fight over a doublet?”

Jaskier huffed a laugh at that. “No, not quite. More of a family dispute, I suppose.”

Geralt watched Jaskier, indicating for him to continue.

The bard sighed, but carried on. “Jaskier isn’t my real name. My birth name is Julian Alfred Pankratz. Quite the mouthful, I know. I was also born with a title, Viscount of Lettenhove. I’m a noble, or was a noble I suppose. My title isn’t exactly mine anymore.”

The Witcher furrowed his eyebrows, wondering how one could just stop being a noble. Before he could ask, Jaskier continued his story.

“My parents were horrid people at the best of times. Filled with resentment towards me and my sisters, always trying to get us to follow in their footsteps and do things their way. I just wanted to play music, I didn’t want that responsibility or pressure.” Jaskier stopped speaking for a moment, his face turned towards the water below him as though he was trying to hide his emotion. Geralt wasn’t sure if he knew that Witcher’s could sense it, and Geralt could feel his deep sadness. He thought it best not to mention it.

“I get my love of people from my mother. She was always incredibly social, both at parties and in her bed, so I didn’t see much of her as a child. Not that I minded. But her habits made my father incredibly angry, as I’m sure you can imagine. He started to question everything she did, mostly while he was drunk, including the legitimacy of his children. I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this.”

“Hm.” Not the most articulate response, but Geralt didn’t want Jaskier to feel as though he had to stop telling his story.

“One night, after a particularly large amount of beer, my father confronted her about it while she was trying to introduce me to some Princess. No doubt trying to arrange a marriage of some sort. She was mortified, and they started screaming at eachother. Eventually she’d had enough and claimed I wasn’t his biological child in front of everyone. Needless to say he was angry and drunk and those things mixed with a knife doesn’t exactly bode well.” He gestured to his chest. “So I ran away, they disowned me, I almost died, and now I’m a bard.”

He said that last sentence in such a blasé way compared to the rest of the story that Geralt couldn’t stop the shocked expression that crept into his face.

“How old were you?” Geralt asked.

“15. So I’ve been on my own for 3 years. Until I met you.” Jaskier smiled at Geralt before ducking his head under the water to rinse his hair. The corner of Geralts mouth turned up a little at that. He felt an overwhelming urge to protect the young troubadour. Something he’d not felt before.

As he watched Jaskier walk out of the stream and begin to dress, he vowed that the man would never be alone again.

And for a long time, he wasn’t.
