I have to tell yall something that none of you are going to like....

It's not the same gear.

I know, I know, we all want it to be the same gear from when Jayce and Viktor first got the Arcane to work for them, we all want Viktor to have kept it with him for sentimental reasons, i know. Trust me, I do too. But it's not

Don't get me wrong, it still represents the same thing! Their relationship, the whole "two sides of the same coin" thing, what they've built, how connected they are. The corruption that's taken over. It still means the same, it's just a different gear.

"But Nexa how do you know?!" I hear you scream. I'm so glad you asked.

Let's look at the gear in question

Do you see the problem yet?

They're very different sizes. The original gear is much smaller, and the center hole is wider in relation. Viktor's corrupted gear has a smaller opening but is honestly overall pretty large as far as gears go.

Aside from the increased detail, I think this shot shows pretty well that the center is too different for it to be the same. The animation in Arcane is honestly too meticulous to miss that.

Which makes sense, Viktor and Jayce wouldn't have really had time to grab anything from that lab as they left. And Viktor didn't hold on to the gear, he let it float away. Even if he did remember exactly what it looked like, he'd have to go find it while the enforcers and Heimerdinger were already there, and I highly doubt they were inclined to let that happen.

So instead I propose a different solution! Viktor grabbed that gear on his way out of the lab for the last time, likely planning to never again see Jayce - or at least all they had built together - after that.

All in all, this distinction doesn't really matter and please keep writing heartbreaking stuff where it is the same gear cause I feed off that shit. I just wanted to share this particular observation. And also I think Viktor grabbing a gear on his way out as a reminder is equally heartbreaking.

I'm currently reading FFS while waiting for UtR updates, and the difference between Nate in both series is such whiplash 😭😭

Yeah it's pretty intense.

I mean the main thing is... we just never see Nate properly at all in FFS. Not once. We only see him around someone he doesn't like, at a point in his life when he's already healed from most of his issues, and we never really learn anything much about him. And that was intentional, in a way, Nate and Efnisien butt heads so much because they remind each other of the things they like least in themselves.

But we never see Nate's PTSD, we never see Christian's abuse of him, we never see Nate being insecure with Janusz like he is in Underline the Blue. In that way, we kind of never get to violate Nate's privacy in FFS. He gets to maintain his own walls, his own autonomy, his own sense of self.

They're actually, to me, basically the same. Like some characters I write across AUs are very very different "people" to me (FFS Efnisien vs. canon Efnisien being the main one).

But Nate in both UtBlue and FFS for me is the same. You've just never seen Nate in UtBlue healed, with autonomy, believing he has a right to his own privacy, talking with someone he doesn't like very much. Just like we never see Nate in FFS broken, post-abuse, without autonomy, believing he has no right to his own privacy.

But we see a lot of the glimmers of it. From Nate's scathing self-talk, his constant judgement of Janusz which reads very similarly to how Nate judges Efnisien out loud, to his disdain for a lot of broken systems in the world, and his ability to switch off from things he often doesn't care for. All those things are there, they're all happening in his inner thoughts in Underline the Blue, and if/when - one day - we blow away the worst of his self-hatred, what will be left is the Nate from FFS, just you know, from his perspective, instead of the perspective of someone who doesn't like him.

OH YES. I remember my first day of Society Lessons as a hearing person, where the everything was explained to me. Via Audiobook. FIRST they spoke and said, "you are standing on the ground." It was a life changing revelation, and the world began to spin.

But it did not stop.

THEN they said, "there are fingers on your hands." The sensation of flesh and bone crackling into existence is indescribable, but I did not yet know pain, until they told me, "that hurts." I began screaming immediately.

And yet... it continued.

They explained so much. Chairs. Tables. Walls. The sky. Frogs. Ionizing radiation. Breathing. I was told all of it, in one sitting, and only then did I understand. Only when my ears were bursting with normal hearing knowledges, did they begin... my final test.

A strange wall-chair-finger emerged from the sky-of-the-wall, stood on the ground several times, until it was in front of me. A second one came behind it, this one slimmer. The audiobook gave these things names;

Human. Father. Mother. Door. Walking. It was completely impossible to know what these things were until that very moment.

I watch a human dip a hook into water and produce a fish, and I recall my Society Lessons where they called that "fishing." I am decked in the face by a nefarious hooligan, and I have only the audiobook to thank when I know I have been "punched" by a "bad guy." It was only the magic of verbal-speaking-words-noise that made me understand that there are "other people" and that they "do stuff."

Sometimes, even, in "groups."

Before the Society Lessons Audiobook, I knew nothing. I was pure, innocent, uncorrupted by concepts such as "parents" and "door." I am grateful every day that there is no such concept as "being shown things" or "simple logical reasoning" or "looking."

Blessed be those amongst us who escape the horrors of the Society Lessons Audiobook. I pray that you never learn what anything is. Be free! Free as a bird, which also knows nothing and famously cannot learn. 🤗

On learning languages...

I've been doing Spanish lessons on Duolingo for about a year now (because of reasons) and some lessons are harder than others (i hate gendered nouns so much) but overall it's going slowly but steadily. I've just about gotten to the point where I can read simple things if I've got a way to look up words I don't know yet.

The last couple of units have been on past tense, which is great, it opens up lots of avenues for conversation and reading. Except this unit.

The most recent set of lessons it gave me combined -- among other things -- the verbs ver ("to see") and venir ("to come"). Very useful verbs. Except THEY'RE SO EASY TO MISTAKE FOR ONE ANOTHER, especially when you get into the past tense and the 'e' changes to an 'i' or sometimes an 'ie'.

What even the FUCK. I got so fed up today I had to sit down and make up a chart.

Present tense: (ver) yo veo, tú ves, él ve, nosotros vemos, ellos ven (venir) yo voy, tú vienes, él viene, nosotros venimos, ellos vienen

and in the past (preterite): (ver) yo vi, tú viste, él vió, nosotros vimos, ellos vieron (venir) yo vine, tú viniste, él vino, nosotros vinimos, ellos vinieron

I'm sure I'll get them down eventually. BUT WHY DID DUOLINGO FEEL THE NEED TO GIVE THEM BOTH TO ME IN THE SAME UNIT???

Oh my goodness, thank you so much!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the writing so far.

There are definitely some big / major arcs coming. We've got the Henton arc and the Crielle arc coming, I just had to move Gary and Efnisien's character growth and relationship growth into a position for both to take place.

I'm actually just about to write the chapter on my end where Crielle officially comes back into the story.

And tbh, the hints have been there! Henton's foreshadowing about him not really having good motivations (anyone who has read Falling Falling Stars will know more about that, but I also like that some folks won't, but he's still very 'off' as a character), as well as Efnisien's certainty that Crielle will eventually kill him.

So yeah I would say actually the most action-packed arcs are still coming!
