forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.

Fun fact: I refuse to call the Boston opera house the “citizens bank opera house“ because fuck capitalism; they don’t get to take credit for it

I will happily call it the Boston opera house, or the Lamb opera house after its architect. I will not validate corporate attempts to claim credit for the arts

It’s an embarrassment to our city to have a major cultural institution named after a corporation like some kind of football stadium

I wish more people talked about opera. like why aren't there more books and tv shows and movies about opera. opera is so fucking cool and it IS actually for everyone. thinking of opera as some elitist rich people ritual makes the problem worse and you miss out on so many opportunities to feel and experience art!!

the most frequent comment I hear is about the language barrier and not understanding what's going on, which I sooo get, but there is so much more to opera than the words and to think otherwise is to ignore how much other work goes into telling a story. in every direction there are people who have dedicated their lives to their craft. musicians and singers who have spent decades learning their instrument, designers and technicians who are creating the space, composers, conductors, stage managers, librarians. there is so much story that can be told through vocalization, instrumentation, setting, costume, lighting... and every performance is a showing of someone's life work. it's beautiful.

and yeah, the storylines are crazy and there's tropes out the wazoo but hey
