☉ what do you do when you get stuck writing?

A few things-

I read. Whatever I can get my hands on. And I try to do it with an eye towards writing- I try and examine what I'm reading to see, "oh, how does this author write dialogue without it sounding repetitive?" or, "how does this author use body language to express how a character's feeling?" But also, if I'm not in the mood / don't have the spoons for that, I just read for the sake of reading. Old favorites and new finds. Poetry is good to find turns of phrase that lodge somewhere behind my ribs. Eventually, something trickles through.

Also, this is probably not helpful, but... I write anyways. And I give myself permission to write shit. It's like when you're turning on a tap that hasn't been turned on in a while, and you gotta let it run for a bit to get potable water. I've got several different versions of Stitch's POV last chapter, and even more versions of scenes that I'm writing for this next one. That first bit of writing is gonna be rusty-brown, but I'm never gonna get to something I'm pleased with if I don't turn on the tap. (For what it's worth, I'm still working on internalizing this.)

Credit where credit is due, I found this tip on Tumblr, so it's not my own- but a trick I've found really useful if I find that I've written myself into a corner is to go back ten sentences and take it in a different direction from that point. This might take a few tries, but it usually ends up working really well for me.

Nearly forgot, but I also make huge use of the voice recording app on my phone! I speak the scene into existence first- vibes, snippets of dialogue, whatever's in my head- and then I transcribe it. I would recommend this to anyone- going on a walk and talking about your fic into the voice recorder is a really good way of breaking writer's block!

What editing process?

For real though, my editing process usually looks like rereading and rereading and rereading again- doing my best to catch typos, inconsistencies, editing certain phrases that grate on my nerves- and, occasionally, rewriting whole sections. But not without a whole lot of complaining to my dog.

Then, when I can't find anything else, I reread the chapter a few more times until I'm absolutely convinced that it's the worst thing ever to grace the face of the earth-

Then I post it.

Everything I wrote above for what I do when I get stuck writing is also pretty intertwined with my editing process, to be honest. There's never a clear distinction.

I don't usually get to talk about the technical aspects of writing, so thanks so much for these- they made me think critically about my process, and I can always do with more of that! I'd love to hear other people's tips and tricks as well!

"hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
