dead-easy prophecy to make about the future:

self-driving cars are going to get good enough to become legal. at some point. i dunno when; there's been overpromising and hype cycles about it for like a decade now- but at some point it gets there.

they're going to kill someone every single day. every single day, a self-driving car will make a mistake and someone will die as a result. it will be in the news constantly- we're going to call them, like, "slaughter machines", and talk about how the self-driving car business is run by literal blood money.

and this is going to happen even if they're ten times safer than human drivers and actively saving lives.

in just the US, there's 100+ vehicle fatalities per day. if 10% of the cars on the road are self-driving and they're 10x safer than human drivers, there's going to be 1+ fatalities per day. every single one of them is going to make the news. some of them are going to be photogenic children. everyone is going to have a story to tell about a friend of a friend whose friend died in a self-driving crash. it'll be common knowledge! everyone knows that these things are incredibly unsafe, and that getting into one is highly irresponsible.

(we know this will happen because it's already happening! everyone knows that Teslas are shitty cars that spontaneously catch fire all the time, even though there's ~43k annual vehicular fires in the US, and 1% of the cars on the road are Teslas, so you should expect ~430 annual Tesla fires but there's actually like 50-something. 50-something is enough for something new that people already hate to be in the news every single week! they got that nasty musk all over them- and self-driving cars are definitely going to have that nasty musk all over them.)

i don't have any illusions that making a tumblr post about this is going to stop this from happening, but know that once it does start happening i will be shaking my head condescendingly about it every time i see it.

Even though I know it’s all intentional, I truly hate how we’ve become forced to normalize AI. I do think that the manufacturing of Artificial Intelligence was not done with malicious intent and has the capabilities of actually doing good, but time and time again ai is being used in literally everything for the worst reasons and getting its getting harder to escape.

From AI being used to scrape people’s hard work all over the internet, to giving predators and abusers more power in fabricating porn of strangers, to being used to strengthen racial bias in surveillance technology and aid in the development of weapons of war and mass destruction against marginalized groups of people…it’s just too fucking much. It’s so exhausting wanting to live in a world where we just didn’t need or have any of this shit, and it wasn’t like this a few years ago either. But now you can’t step outside without seeing something about AI, or a promotional ad for a new system to install. You can’t engage online anywhere without coming across AI software, and literally every single device in our present day implements AI to some degree, and it’s so fucking annoying.

I don’t want to keep worrying about the next idiot that’s spoon feeding my work into their AI system because they lack humanity and imagination. I don’t want to have to manually turn off AI detection on all of my apps and my phone just to use something. I shouldn’t have to be more mindful about the media I consume to distinguish whether or not it’s original or just more AI slop. I know it’s all intentional since we live in a hyper-capitalist world that cares more about profit margins & rapid productivity. But I really do vehemently hate how artificial intelligence has become such a fundamental aspect of our day to day lives when all it does is make the general population dumber and less capable of thinking for themselves.

Sincerely fuck AI. And if you use AI, I really do suggest you read up on how the data centers built to manage these AI systems suck up all of our resources for a simple prompt input. Who cares about answering a question in ChatGPT, entire communities don’t have water because they’re too busy cooling down the servers where people ask what 6 + 10 is cause their brains are so fried they can’t fire a single fucking neuron.

Cannot stop thinking about how delightfully impractical it is to have 100% invisible clothing closures. You could make so many B-plots out of various Star Trek characters fighting with their own clothes.

Because, ok, I have to assume that there’s no need to align the edges perfectly in order to close up the invisible seam. That’s obviously unworkable. So maybe there’s some kind of guidance system (magnets or something similar) that makes the sides “want” to align in the correct closed position.

Magnetic clothing closures already exist. But these 24th century closures would have to work a bit differently, since we don’t have any visible overlap in the fabric. Maybe the edges of the fabric meet perfectly edge-on, and these are some very narrow, extremely strong magnets. Hopefully they never wiggle even slightly out of position, or the seam will be permanently misaligned. Or, if the fabric does overlap, I guess each flap is exactly half the thickness of the rest of the fabric, which should be doable with their access to precision manufacturing.

Cool. So now I’ve met a smoking hot freighter captain with 12 heads and twice as many excretion sphincters. I’d like to remove my garment. If it’s overlapping flaps, how do I get it started? Remember, there’s no visible flap for me to grab, they’re completely flush with the rest of the fabric. Am I sitting there digging my fingernail around to try to find the edge?

Let me try pulling sideways instead. I’m now pulling in a direction that has to stay closed for the clothing to function, so any guidance (whether it’s magnets or Future Magnets) is going to be especially strong on this axis. We don’t want it popping open every time I stretch my legs or take a deep breath. Does it keep trying to “helpfully” snap back into place? How do I half-open my jacket without it re-zipping itself? With larger clothing closures, there’s an intentionality to how I interact with them. But with invisible clothing closures, there would always be that element of autocorrect.

If we want to build some intentionality back in, maybe there’s some kind of gesture control or tap zone that toggles it open/closed (with idk nanobots or something), plus various presets for partially open/closed. This control is also, apparently, invisible. I’m on a diplomatic mission to a new planet and now there’s wardrobe malfunctions all over the place, because they don’t realize their traditional greeting is the screen-lock passcode for my entire jumpsuit.

Hard night of partying, need to go pee. Forget struggling with my fly, I don’t even know how to find it. Guess I’m making use of the fabric’s futuristic piss-wicking technology once again.
