Otabek took a deep breath, his eyes briefly flickering over to Yuri before focusing back on the crowd. "Yes, I can confirm that I will retire from competitive figure skating after the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. It's been an incredible journey, but it's time for me to move on to new challenges." The room erupted in murmurs and gasps, reporters scrambling to capture the shocking news. Yuri felt a sudden chill, his mind struggling to process the announcement. He had known Otabek was considering retirement, but hearing it declared so publicly, with such finality, felt like a punch to the gut. For one last time, he glanced at Otabek, hoping for some sign, some unspoken message. But Otabek's gaze was resolute, focused on the future, on a path that seemed to no longer include him.

another snippet from yet another WIP that definitely meets the criteria for the 'lou be mean to otabek' challenge even though it's not super obvious from this.

Otabek tries to ignore the prickling feeling of Yuri's eyes on him while he gets dressed, tries to dismiss the stupid relief he feels once he's covered up and sits back down on the bed next to Yuri, who's already engrossed in whatever is on his phone screen again.

Otabek takes it as a good sign. He can tell Yuri wants to talk, but it seems like he has decided not to pressure him. He wonders how long that patience will last. Knowing Yuri, he's on a timer. And maybe he shouldn't let it run out.

Still, he stalls by reaching for the food. He needs the sustenance even though he has no real appetite; there's already a stone of trepidation taking up all the space in his stomach. He forces himself to take a few bites of everything anyway, thanking years of discipline for being able to do the responsible thing even when he doesn't feel like it - although it's possible he didn't have the same sense of discipline during the flight, because he can't recall having eaten anything during travel.

When he reaches for the tea, Yuri looks up again. Watches quietly as Otabek takes a few sips, cradling the warm mug with both hands like a lifeline.

“So,” Yuri says, putting his phone down. A sure sign that things are about to get serious. That timer has been way shorter than Otabek hoped. He takes another sip of tea, trying to swallow his heart down that has jumped into his throat again.

“Are you gonna tell me what's going on between you and JJ?”

I can't lie, the news about Ice Adolescence is heartbreaking, mostly because of its inevitability. Yuri on Ice was a show I desperately needed at the exact moment I desperately needed it. Even now, when I get into a really bad spiral, listening to the soundtrack helps ease some of that weight. It's also a show that I wrote fanfic for before my writing career really took off, and I loved playing with characters and plots, finding ways to weave together all the threads I loved most from the show.

So, yes, while the news is depressing as hell, I'm going to cling to the good things that came from that flashpoint magical show and celebrate them. That includes revisiting some of my old fics and appreciating the comments and friendships I gained from the fandom when I was writing for it. Without further ado...

He lay with his heart bare in a pile of petals, painted red in blood. Otabeks throat ached as he rasped for breath. Faintly could he hear the cheers from the television, the squeal of hopeless fans that still somehow held more faith in their princely fairy as he skittered across the ice. Still could they stare at Yuri’s face in awe, witness the fierce intensity of his focused stare without coughing up flowers.

Slowly lolling his head to the side, Otabek watched as the camera’s zoomed in on Yuri’s form once more. Following along with every triple axel and leap into the air, the grip inside Otabeks chest tightened. He swallowed dryly, a prickled tear slipping down the bridge of his nose.

“Yuri…” Otabek gasped, weakly reaching his hand out as the blond finished his choreograph.

Otabek’s vision spotted, Yuri’s victorious smile engulfing the screen before Otabek slipped into unconsciousness.

Otabek later awoke to the sound of ringing, a buzz in his pocket. Checking his surroundings with bleary eyes, Otabek registered that the light outside the window had darkened significantly. The ice program was no longer on and the ringing in his ears insistent for attention.

“Erm, hello.” Otabek coughed between his words, bringing the phone up to his ear.

“Otabek!” Yuri exclaimed. “You’re not going to believe this bullshit!”

“Hm?” Sluggishly Otabek crawled into a sitting position with his back to the couch.

“JJ-”

Otabek rubbed the palm of his hand against his eye, frowning at the bloody saliva that  stuck to his skin.

“- that bastard! He stole the gold from me!”

“Oh..” Otabek used the inside of his shirt collar to wipe off his face.

“Oh?” Yuri’s voice softened. “Is something wrong?”

“No, it’s just…” Otabek trailed off, eyes still wet from hacking up earlier. It hurt to breathe, throat clogged up and his stomach lurching with every exhale. “I just - I don’t feel well.”

“Are you sick?”

“I guess that’s it.” Otabek wished it wasn’t so.

“It’s Valentine’s Day.”

“Yeah.” Otabek shut his wet eyes, biting the inside of his cheek.

“You really shouldn’t be sick on Valentine’s Day. Is someone there with you?”

“No.”

“I wish I were.”

Sudden bile built up inside of Otabek, unwilling to be held hostage by his tight lips. Nearly bending forward in half, Otabek dropped his phone, a fresh new pile of rose petals hurling out of his mouth. Otabek gagged, clenched his fist, and suffered. He suffered through the pain, the heartache, the muffled worried cries of his friend who called his name.

“Otabek! Otabek, are you okay!?”

Globs of spit connected Otabeks lips to the already ruined floor. Pressing his forehead down into the mess, Otabek groaned. The pain grew excruciatingly difficult to contain.

“Otabek!”

“I’m al-alright…” It was a blatant lie.

Gasping for air, Otabek let out the meal he’d been struggling to hold down all day. Vomiting out his feelings in a way he didn’t know possible.

“I’m - I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not. Hold on, I’m -'' There was a clicking noise on the other side of the phone. “I’m booking a flight. I’m gonna be there as soon as I can, okay.”

“No.”

“This isn’t a discussion.”

“Yuri, please.” Otabek’s lips let out a pitiful whimper.

“Otabek.”

“Mm…”

“I’m going and that’s final.”

“The Grand Prix -”

“Doesn’t start for another two weeks. You need someone there now, Otabek.” Yuri’s words were final.

This time Otabek didn’t try to argue; he didn’t have the strength to.

“I’m so tired…” He whispered.

“Get your rest.” Yuri whispered back just as quietly. Something on the other line pinged. “I’ll be there early tomorrow.”

“Hm,” Otabek nodded his head into the floorboards.

“Do you,” Yuri stuttered on a sigh, “want me to stay on the line?”

Otabek melted into the ground, breathing shallowly. “Yeah…”

Tomorrow there’ll be a crick in his neck. Tomorrow a blond will come banging on his door, yelling in his ear. Likely Otabek will only hurt more. Tonight though he needed a soft moment.

Yuri placatingly murmured in Otabek’s ear, a reserved tone not often used before. The blond dotted on him from overseas, lulled the thorns around Otabeks chest to loosen the slightest bit.

In the back of his mind, Otabek knew he should clean up but he was just so…

Perhaps this is less about risks they are willing to take, and more about the risks they have to.

Otabek takes a deep breath, and rests his forehead against Yuri’s, hand still cupping his cheek.

“Come back. Please.”

The question startles Otabek out of his brooding thoughts. He frowns quizzically, as if he has no clue what Yuri is referring to. Yuri blows a strand of sweat-damp hair out of his face with a huff, glaring at Otabek as if it's his fault that Yuri can't just let this go.

“When you said you hate being my boss.”

Otabek lets out a quiet sigh and avoids his eyes again.

“Yes.”
