I am THIS close to going full conspiracy board trying to piece together the components of my favourite genre "spooky, mystery solving, coming of age adventures that involve a clash of the mundane and the supernatural"
EDIT: I went full conspiracy board mode

The Unknown had affected them in many ways, and not all of them had been obvious enough to gain attention.
Like the way Wirt would follow the flow of the rivers with his eyes, searching for a ferry filled with frogs even if he didn't realise it himself. Watch the birds flying by, thinking- are they a happy family, too? Take up bird watching as a hobby, even though he couldn't tell the difference between a sparrow and a robin.
The way Greg would keep a spare pair of socks in his shoolbag, ready to deploy in case of cold frog feet. Smear his mother's lipstick on his carved pumpkin the following halloween, trying to make it feel familiar. Who had it been? He couldn't remember.

(C1) Snippet of "Four: Candy and Rocks"
Wirt made it to the edge of the clearing and nearly collapsed against a tree, gasping desperately. The Beast. The Beast was after them. He clapped a hand to his chest and shut his bugged eyes. Oh, that crazy Woodsman was right. These woods were no place for them. He heard feet too small for a Beast running up behind him. “This is amazing!” came the oblivious voice of Greg. Apparently delighted at their doom. “We should get out of here before the Beast comes back out,” Wirt breathed, glancing over his shoulder. He eyed the mill. He eyed the forest. “Should we try to make a break for it? Although the Beast seems like it’d be fast. We could try to climb a tree, or…” “But Kitty isn’t a tree frog! His hands aren’t sticky enough! See?” And he lifted the frog’s slimy ‘hands’ toward Wirt’s face. “Ew, Greg, no! Stop that!” Before he could finish his protest, a half-howl broke the air. Wirt yelped and darted behind a tree, then shot out a hand to yank Greg back. After all, he was in plain sight where he was standing. The Beast would’ve totally found them.

i was wondering if you could make headcanons of the haikyuu girls’ (kiyoko, miwa kageyama, michimiya, and maybe yachi) reaction to the reader writing her first novel 🤭
OMGOMGOMG I LOVE THIS IDEA
(also my first req from you?! heheh)
Tumblr media
shimizu kiyoko ;
omg she’s so so so supportive of you
okay so. let’s say you’re writing a crime novel— at this point in time, she doesn’t know that you’re writing one.
one day, she walks into your office to see you researching murders, murderers, and how they got away with their crimes for so long.
she knows that you’re into true crime and things of the sort, so she brushes it off!! she’s kinda like ‘eh okay, that’s normal’
but, it’s when she sees you acting out a murder with your figurines, that she gets concerned. (plsss she just wanted to bring you food)
anyways, she questioned you about it and the embarrassment you experienced was unbelievable.
you had to explain that you were figuring out some stuff for the novel you’re writing and it all just— clicked for her.
OH and if you ask— she’ll give you pointers and correct any grammar or spelling mistakes you might have (i just KNOW she’s a pro at literature).
kageyama miwa ;
she puts her ALL into supporting you!!!!!!!
you’re writing (drum roll) an adventure/sci-fi novel!!! (because i feel like she’d like those, can’t tell me otherwise bye!) maybe it’s something like journey to the center of the earth?? city of ember???
you guys have movie nights together!! and usually your pick of genre is WIDE but recently it’s been strictly adventure/sci-fi— which she’s not mad about!! just curious!
when you’re scrolling through a streaming app, she asks about why you’re choosing just adventure and sci-fi.
at first, you didn’t wanna tell her cause you wanted it to be a surprised!! but she pulls it out of you with her charm (aka you broke bc you’re bad at keeping secrets)
she’s so excited for it!! she’s excited for you!!!
she’s always asking questions about how it’s going and always asks about your characters!! (and when she finds out you based one off of her she’s just so happy)
she’ll ask to read snippets here and there but ultimately she just lets you work until you’re ready for her to read!!
michimiya yui ;
giggles, blushes, twirls hair… she’s your number one supporter!!! the first to buy your book in ALL forms. (also, i never thought of writing for her— how stupid am i for that???)
soooo you’re writing a coming of age story!! maybe something based on your own experiences??
lets sayyy… you had some diaries or journals when you were a teenager and you dug DEEP in your closet to find them— which made her very curious.
she kinda lets it go for a bit until you’re nearly tearing up your closet to find this specific journal. then she’s just like ‘wtf are you doing?’
when you tell her you’re working on a novel— she’s so happy about it!!
she loves to support you in any way she can!! she offers to be your beta reader and who are you to deny her of such things???
she’ll give you pointers and find any plot holes there may be in your story!!
yachi hitoka ;
this absolutely cutie <3 she’s your biggest supporter and motivator!!
wanna know what you’re writing? fantasy. (because she’d love that and i love her) maybe something that’s like where the wild things are?? or over the garden wall??? (pls i love otgw)
anyways— she’s starting to notice that you’re always on your computer nowadays and sometimes you accidentally ignore her.
she’s a non-confrontational person but, she works up all the courage to talk to you about this— and i’ll be so real with you, she cries before a single word comes out. (just like me fr)
god the utter fear that rushes through you— you thought she was dying or smthn!! she starts talking while she’s crying and THANKFULLY you’re able to piece together what she’s saying.
when you explain to her that you’re writing a novel, she feels so much relief (and embarrassment tbh)
now we know this girl is smart, it’s canon!! so you ask her for some help with grammar, sentence setups, etc!! and she’s very happy to help!!!
Tumblr media
pls i hope this was good
(my writer’s block has been slowly leaving!!)

Additional misc wips I haven’t touched in forever are the latest chapters for The World Doesn’t Deserve You (MDZS) and Frostbite (All Saints Street). 😅
And as a bonus, these aren’t at all “official” yet but the more I read for some manhua the more I’m tempted to write fics for them… For example, a fic for Blemishing the Contaminated or My Lovely Troublemaker season 2 would be so cute, even if I don’t exactly have any clear or obvious ideas for them. 🥺
Phew, wow. I had way more wips than I expected AKFJSKFHSJS. Some are honestly just super half-baked documents tucked away in a folder with only a title and outline, but I hope something here was of interest to you guys. 😆💖
As for tagging…
I also don’t think I’m capable of tagging as many people as I have wips otl. So I hope you guys don’t mind if I tag just a few of you!
@ezrathesplit @levia-kun @yumichanhamano @softdekus @rongzhi @azunshi
(Of course, if you would rather not, feel free not to do this!)

not necessarily a wish but curious if there are any AUs you feel like you’d like to try writing one day? love your canon-set work a lot 💖
Thank you omg💕💕
When it comes to AUs…well I started and planned out movie star Carlos. So idk if it’ll ever be finished but maybe. I do care about it and want it to be done so I hope I get motivated to do it once I finish college. I also did that snippet of omegaverse before realising I didn’t want to BUT maybe. Because I love the idea of the overpowering and irresistible desire.
Ultimately though I am kind of struggling to think of any apart from movie star Carlos. I read an unreal landoscar howls moving castle au by astronautaficionado so maybe I would like to do a sort of magical au with a pairing. Obviously I would not just copy their howls moving castle idea lol but something fun that I like could be transferred. Years ago I read an umbrella academy otgw au. Those types of things. Otgw is like genuinely one of my fave things ever YES it’s for children YES I’m in my 20s YES I’ve watched it all the way through repeatedly for years. so that could be fun but it’s so about family not romance

I was tagged by @limetameta at perhaps the most unfortunate (Or fortunate I suppose, depending on your personal opinion) for this game. After finishing Star Crossed I've spent the past four days reorganizing three years of WIPs, so everything I intend to work on in 2025, and a few things I don't, have a name.
I'd like to tag @xathira, @penguin--person and @incurablenecromantic and I think everyone else I know has been tagged so we'll leave it at that, but feel free to include yourself if you've been omitted, and under the read more I'll put my exhaustive list of WIP titles.
Everything is an OTGW WIP unless specified otherwise, first up, everything new since the last time I was tagged in this game:
Needles
A Blessing Not Often Sought
Devil's Dozen
Half a Full Ride
Infinite Combination (Star Trek TOS)
CW (Danny Phantom)
Fit to be Tied
Old Providence
And everything newly named, I'm fairly sure I've answered for each of these before, but in the interest of honesty, they are still all in my wip folder:
The Tranformative Power of Love is A Fucking Horror Trope as far as I'm concerned
One in the Spirit (Halloween)
Land of Milk And Honey/Write Between the Lines (Sherlock Holmes)
Orchard Wassailing
I think we call that an Oral Fixation honey
Is it a Patreon or an OnlyFans?
Unworthy
Tales from the fruit basket
What One Good Turn Deserves Pt1 & 2

(C1) Snippet of "Two: Work"
The door clicked shut somewhere behind him as the Woodsman knelt by the barren hearth. “I found this homestead abandoned,” he explained, taking out a flint and steel, “and repurposed its mill for my…” In striking them, his speech hovered on the appropriate word. “…my needs.” A spark caught alight. The heat grew from it as if from a tiny seed. Ah, that should warm them up. Glancing over his shoulder, he found an ever-nervous Wirt, casting a wary eye at his surroundings. “You and your brother should be safe here while I work,” he assured the lad. Little Greg certainly seemed to feel safe enough. He was crouching oblivious by the door, muttering happily about candy as he laid it on the ground. And the Woodsman was satisfied with that. However, as he turned back to the fire, he heard Wirt speak up, sounding more suspicious than anxious now. “What—what is your… work, exactly?” At the simple question, the Woodsman’s eyes slipped shut. His work. What could he say of that? How could he tell these lost boys—these children—the horrible reason he would never leave these lands? Or should he tell them at all? He opened his eyes and looked on the blaze in the hearth, dancing like a bright soul. Its light reflected on his grim, worn face. “Everyone has a torch to burn,” he murmured...

Chapter 9 [FF | AO3] of Down the Rabbit Hole: Wirt had heard a lot of stories about college, but somehow, he still wasn’t prepared for one of his roommate’s crazy friends to smuggle a hatchet into their dorm room.
beginning | previous
-|-
Wirt didn’t think he was hungry until he smelled the food. He hadn’t been paying attention before and had thought Toby had planned to recommend his favourite Mexican place around the corner (even if nothing apparently came close to a certain burrito truck from back home), but the fare was a little more familiar to Wirt than that. Cabbage rolls and pierogies and sausage— He’d eaten this stuff at his grandma’s house all the time.
Was that why Toby had chosen it? Wirt couldn’t remember if he’d ever mentioned it, but Toby was scarily good about picking up on that kind of thing and remembering it. Necessity, maybe, after everything he and his friends had gotten into. Or maybe this was one of his many ways of being a good friend. Or maybe it was just a fluke. If it was just a fluke, it was going to be a delicious one.
Wirt hovered around on the pretense of being able to help unpack the food until Wendy shooed him from the kitchen. Once it was finally all set out, he took his place in line—fourth—behind Toby. “This was a good idea,” he said as he spooned extra tomato sauce over his cabbage rolls.
“Of course it was. When is good food not a good idea?”
Wirt just laughed and speared a second sausage before helping himself to the pierogies and onions. This was going to be so much better than potatoes and molasses, though he’d admit the different circumstances helped substantially as well. He was surrounded by friends, by friends who knew what he’d gone through—well, he hadn’t told Toby the full story, and Claire and Douxie would only have gleaned so much, but he could fill in Toby tonight—and they accepted him without question.
More to the point, they accepted him without looking at him like he was crazy or making things up or like he merely had an overactive imagination.
He’d been holding things in for so long, only speaking freely with Greg, that this was…. He hadn’t realized how freeing this would be. He’d fought to keep anyone from knowing for so long, and now that he’d given that up, now that he knew more than he’d ever anticipated about some of the other things that apparently went on in this world—
It was still overwhelming. He’d be lying to himself if he didn’t admit that. But he had more than just Greg to rely on now, which mattered because Greg should never have had to bear the burden of Wirt trying to handle all of this alone. Greg had been doing that before Wirt had moved out. Heck, he’d been doing it the odd time since Wirt had moved out, if Wirt managed to catch him at home alone when Toby was out of the room.
Sometimes, talking to Greg about his nightmares had been the only outlet Wirt had thought he’d had.
It wasn’t like he could talk to an actual psychologist about this.
They wouldn’t understand his insistence that it wasn’t just a dream.
That was perhaps why he’d spent so much of his time insisting it was just a dream, just a story, just a fancy, to anyone who found out about it.
Of course, come to think of it, Toby had always been awfully inclined to break his routine after one of Wirt’s nightmares. Had he overheard enough to talk to Wendy and Jazz about it? Or had he just been trying to give Wirt some space? It could have been coincidence, of course, if something on his end had come up, but—
“Do you know when we might get word of Jim?” Claire asked as Danny came back into the living room with a second heaping plate.
Beside Wirt, Toby shook his head and kept chewing. Danny settled back down at the foot of Jazz’s chair and said, “You’ll want to give it a few more hours before you even hope to hear something. Frostbite’s good, but their methods don’t grant instantaneous healing or anything like that. If something goes wrong, Wulf would come right away, but Frostbite seemed to know what he was dealing with. I wouldn’t worry about that.”
From the look on Claire’s face, she would continue to worry about that, but Wirt had no idea what he could say that would be comforting.
“Frostbite’s good at what he does,” Jazz said quietly. “He’s worked miracles on Danny in the past. We’re lucky to have him as an ally.”
The reassurances sounded believable coming from her, and Claire gave a weak smile.
“Archie will warn us if anyone tries to get a jump on us in the meantime,” Douxie said in a tone that told Wirt it was a reminder. He remembered Douxie mentioning the name before, but he couldn’t quite—
Wait.
Wizard.
Familiar.
What did a wizard’s familiar look like in real life? If trolls were so different from all the stories Wirt had known, he doubted wizard familiars would be the same as what he pictured.
“Jimbo will be okay,” Toby added, and the words were enough to strengthen Claire’s smile. “You know how I said Frostbite knew he was the Trollhunter? It might not have been the amulet that gave him away. I doubt he was looking after Jim for ten minutes before he asked about Jim having a human soul.”
Claire hummed but seemed appreciative. Wirt was glad the words seemed to comfort her, because he found the idea of someone who could see someone else’s soul kinda creepy. And, yeah, sure, maybe that’s not what had happened, or maybe it was a ghost thing—or a specific kind of ghost thing—and this Frostbite character could just tell, but the idea that anyone—anything—could see someone so clearly, so quickly….
Maybe he didn’t like the idea that someone could strip away his defenses more easily than his friends had, especially if that someone was a complete stranger to him.
Knowing that someone could literally see into his soul felt…wrong.
It wasn’t meant to be literal.
Wirt shuddered, and Wendy must have noticed because he saw her frown in his direction before saying, “So what’s the plan in the meantime?”
“Well,” Douxie said slowly as he turned towards Claire, “Claire, I know you won’t want to leave before we get news of Jim, but we need to lay some false trails in case anyone noticed the activity in this area.”
“If you tell me what kind of trails you’re talking, I might be able to help,” offered Danny.
“Magic,” Jazz said before the others could answer. “Which you can’t do. And which you should not ask anyone else to do because I don’t care if you’ve called a truce with Desiree, you can’t risk trusting her with something like this.”
“I can talk to Dipper,” Wendy said with a glance over at Claire. “Once he knows what you need, he can walk me through it, and Danny can fly me around. It might take three of us to replace you, but we can do it.”
The corner of Claire’s mouth quirked upward again. “I’d appreciate that. My head isn’t entirely in this right now.”
Wirt wasn’t sure if Claire was talking about being worried about Jim or the fact that her injuries should have had her in the hospital and, despite whatever Douxie had done, were still taking their toll. Or maybe the cost of the healing was what she was feeling now.
“We’ll head out when you’re ready,” Douxie said, looking between Wendy and Danny.
“So eat faster,” Danny surmised. He took another mouthful and added, “Got it.”
From the slight grin on his face, he was not oblivious to the look of disgust his sister sent him, even if he couldn’t see it. Maybe she’d kicked him? Then again, he might have simply known what her response would be.
Wirt could imagine Greg’s response if he started talking with his mouth full. It was one with markedly more laughter than disapproval. Of course, Wirt could imagine himself in Jazz’s position, too. Greg had a way of charming people that Wirt had never had, so Wirt wouldn’t have been faced with embarrassment in front of his friends over his brother’s behaviour so much as amazement at the fact that Greg had somehow convinced everyone to hang spoons from their noses or use straws to mimic walrus tusks before everyone dissolved into laughter.
It made him realize that even the job they’d given him—recruiter, head hunter, spy, whatever title he could dream of using for it—to keep him safe (safer) while letting him be useful was something he couldn’t just step into easily. Even if he thought he’d be better at it than some of them, he wouldn’t be as good at it as someone like Greg. He’d have to consciously work at it.
He’d think of it as having to leave his comfort zone if he wasn’t already so far past it, foraging into new territory as he was.
“I’ll do the usual,” Toby said. He must have caught Wirt’s questioning glance because he added, “Covering up things here so there’s no obvious starting point. I might not have magic, but I can draw protective runes as well as the next person, and if Archie stays with us, he can help activate them.”
Okay, so Archie was definitely not the kind of familiar Wirt kept picturing. Then again, black cats had to be stereotypical, just like trolls living under bridges. Maybe a familiar was another person who simply had a different sort of relationship to magic than wizards themselves did? That made about as much sense as anything else.
“I can help with that, too, if someone can tell me what to draw,” Jazz said. “I can do that here while Claire rests, and you can do your dorm.”
She was looking at Wirt.
He swallowed. “I’ll help you, Tobes.”
He didn’t really know what he was signing up for, but wasn’t that always the case?
Besides, knowing how to draw protective runes would undoubtedly be a useful skill in the future.
He could only hope it wouldn’t become a necessary nightly ritual.
-|-
Wirt filled in Toby as they worked. Toby had given him a piece of chalk after drawing the most basic runes on a sheet for Wirt to copy while he did the more complicated ones. The good thing about the chalk was that it would be easy to clean up when they moved out; the bad thing was that Wirt had apparently never learned how to not smear it while using it.
“I used to be bad for that, too,” Toby said as he tossed Wirt a towel from the bathroom before climbing back up on Wirt’s bed and facing the wall again. “You eventually learn that you can’t lean on any part of the wall.”
Wirt started to wipe off the offending smudges, carefully not to destroy the rest of his work in the process. He might have the easy job of doing stuff at eye level, starting off by their desks, but that didn’t mean he wanted to redo more than he had to. “How long did that take you to learn, exactly?”
Toby shrugged. “Long enough, but not as long as it could’ve. Someone eventually suggested to Blinky that knives be involved in my training process. If Draal had been around, I’d have said it was him in a heartbeat, but as it is, I’m not convinced it wasn’t Jim or Claire. Or Douxie, for that matter.”
Wirt blinked. He could ask who Blinky and Draal were, but the answer was probably ‘trolls’, and the more important thing was— “Knives?”
“Yeah. Which now that I’m saying it out loud makes me think it might’ve been Not-Enrique. Anyway, Blinky only used the ones that needed sharpening. It ended up being more pokey than stabby, and, honestly, that’s way better than what Jimbo went through.”
“That does not make it okay! That makes it worse!”
“Eh, I survived.”
“You saying that does not make it better.”
“You learn to roll with things like that. And you just learn to roll in general.” Toby finally paused, dropping his hands away from his work around the window and looking over at Wirt. “If I promise not to stab you with anything not approved by Wendy, are you going to be okay with all this?”
They were all going to ask him, weren’t they? Probably repeatedly. Because they didn’t think he really was okay with all of this.
Wirt didn’t know, either.
“I’m going to try.” It was as honest an answer as he could give.
“Hey, I know it’s a lot to take in, but you’ll figure it out. I’m happy to answer any questions you have even if you think they’re stupid. Because they won’t be, you know. And if they are, I’ve already asked them, so I should know the answers.”
Wirt snorted.
“I’m serious. Wake me up in the middle of the night if you have to. Promise?”
“Sure. Promise.”
“Just have a little faith in yourself. You got through the Unknown; you can muddle through this, too. You weren’t alone then and you’re not alone now.”
Wirt hadn’t told Toby how close he’d come to giving up in the Unknown—or, if he were being honest with himself, how he had given up, however briefly. It had been Greg’s faith that had guaranteed their survival more than anything he’d done. He’d hurt as much as he’d helped anyone.
“Yeah,” he said, since agreeing was easier than admitting any of that, let alone explaining it. “You’re right.”
“I’m always right. Unless the others are more right than me, which happens often enough. But even if I’m less right than I should be sometimes, I still promise not to stab you with anything not Corduroy-approved.”
Wirt smiled, even though he knew that guarantee meant nothing—not because Toby wouldn’t honour it but because Wendy was likely to okay almost anything if she thought it might provide sufficient motivation, even if that motivation was by threat of use alone. “Thanks.”
“Any time.”
-|-
Wirt was yawning by the time they’d finished the runes, and he was all set to head back to the girls’ place for the rest of the night. As much as he’d rather crawl into bed right now, for all he knew, he’d messed something up. He’d rather wake up in the morning with a stiff neck from sleeping funny in a chair than be killed in the middle of the night because he’d drawn something wrong and let whatever Toby and the others were trying to avoid find them.
Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic.
It was late.
He was tired.
“I’ve just gotta talk to Archie,” Toby said as they headed for the main doors. “It should only take two seconds. He’ll fit through the window, so it’s mostly to point him in the right direction.”
Wirt frowned. “You left the window open?”
“I left it unlocked, which won’t be an issue once the runes are activated. It’s just like having another door. As long as you’ve got the right protections on it, the guys you’re protecting against can’t get in. Or find you. Assuming nothing went wrong first. Which it wouldn’t have! Because we totally nailed it.”
Wirt was feeling less confident in that now than he had been a few minutes ago, but he let it slide. Toby had experience on this front, and Wirt couldn’t even pretend that he did. “How’s that work, anyway? Archie doing whatever it is he needs to do, I mean.”
He didn’t see anyone else right now, but he didn’t want to say anything too concrete where it might be overheard—or, more to the point, overheard and understood. At least if he kept following Toby’s lead, he wouldn’t mess up and get them into trouble.
In theory.
Toby shrugged. “You’d have to ask him or Douxie for the real explanation. Or Zoey; she’s good at explaining this when you know nothing about it. But Archie’s got his own magic; it’s not like he has to rely entirely on Douxie’s. And that makes a difference for this kind of thing. Just trust that he’ll know what he’s doing and that he’ll do it well.”
Toby pushed open the outside door, and the chill in the air as they walked out into the night was enough to force some wakefulness back into Wirt’s weary body. He slowed to a stop and glanced around, but he couldn’t see anyone hanging around the side of the building or sitting on one of the nearby benches. He couldn’t even see someone standing around and pretending to be on the phone. There were some people cutting across campus in the distance, easily visible whenever they passed under a light, but they were clearly making their way from the main library. There was no one nearby.
There was no one visible nearby, at least.
Wirt looked back to Toby, ready to ask if magic could make people (and familiars) as invisible as ghosts, but Toby was distracted.
Toby had found a cat.
If there was one thing that Wirt had known about Toby practically since moving in, it was that Toby had a bit of a soft spot for cats—though Wirt hadn’t worked out since finding out the truth if that was because his nana loved them or because he felt bad whenever his best (fully troll) friend fondly remarked about eating them.
Knowing Toby, he was trying to encourage the cat to move along so it didn’t get eaten by whatever might be on their tail, especially now that it was dark out.
Wirt was never going to complain about the sun again.
(Well, no, he would. Once he got hot, he’d complain. If the sun would only go behind a cloud, it wouldn’t be so hot, and when that was true, how could he not complain? He would appreciate the sunlight more, though.)
Wirt hung back and waited, and sure enough, the cat scampered away from Toby sooner rather than later.
“Come on,” Toby said. “Let’s get back to Wendy’s and wait for news.”
“What about Archie?”
“Archie knows what he’s doing. It’ll be fine.”
Wirt had not noticed Toby talking to anyone, so maybe he hadn’t been that far off when he’d wondered about invisibility being something that could be achieved through magic. Or maybe Toby had left a message for Archie somewhere he’d know to look for it. Wirt wouldn’t have called that talking to Archie, but, hey, it would still be communicating with him, so who was he to question what Toby was doing?
This was Wirt’s first rodeo, at least with all of this stuff. It wasn’t Toby’s.
Toby offered to explain a bit more about everything on the way back, but Wirt admitted that he wasn’t sure he’d retain it right now. Toby didn’t argue. Sometimes, Wirt thought Toby knew him better than he knew himself. Instead, they lapsed into a comfortable silence and trudged on. The pace was slightly too fast for Wirt’s taste, and it was definitely quicker than Toby’s usual walking pace, but Wirt was not about to lag behind or ask Toby to slow down.
He wasn’t about to ask why Toby was walking so fast, either.
If he was lucky, the truth was something as simple as Toby being worried about Jim and wanting to get back to Claire and the possibility of good news as soon as possible.
Wirt didn’t want to think about what it would mean if he was unlucky.
By the time Jazz let them in, Wirt only had one thing on his mind. He made a beeline for the couch and collapsed on top of it, leaning his head back and closing his eyes as Toby dropped down on the other end. This was enough for one day, wasn’t it? He wasn’t sure he could think straight before getting some sleep.
As it was, each blink lasted longer than the last. He knew he should get up, force himself to his feet and try to get his second wind, but staying here and not moving was much more comfortable. Besides, the others weren’t back yet. He could rest until they were.
Wirt yawned and curled in on himself, nestling into the pillow propped against the arm rest. The low murmur of Toby’s conversation with Claire dropped out of his comprehension, replaced with rustling leaves and the steady rush of running water. The snap of a twig up ahead caught his attention, and as he looked in that direction, he recognized the path on which he stood.
He recognized the cottage in the woods just up ahead, too.
It had changed since he’d last seen it. Now, light glowed somewhere from within the windows, and a hint of smoke from the fireplace rode on the damp air. The roof was in good repair. The grass had been trimmed, the necessary branches of the trees pruned, and the path cleared. Gardens ringed as much of the cottage as he could see; though it wasn’t the season for it to be in full bloom, he could practically feel the promise of what was to come in the careful preparations of dark soil and mulch sectioned out by stones.
The door of the cottage was partially open, like someone stood on the other side about to leave—or about to welcome him in, far away as he was?—and he could hear laughter drifting out from inside.
He started to walk over, wanting to knock on the door frame and ask to go inside if he wasn’t invited in first. He wanted to be out of the woods and away from the sky which threatened rain, but the path stretched farther with each step even though the cottage seemed no farther away. He called out.
The laughter stopped.
Everything stopped, all sound suddenly silenced and the world frozen in place. That didn’t make sense. That wouldn’t happen, not even here. Right?
He took another step forward.
Nothing changed.
That was good. That had to be good. He could keep going. He’d get there. Surely that meant someone had heard him, and that’s why the laughter had stopped. He was imagining the rest. Someone was going to come out to welcome him inside. He started to run, trying to get there, trying to reach them before—
The sound of a door slamming shut woke Wirt with a start. He blinked the sleep from his eyes, realizing that Douxie was back and it was not a door he’d heard shut but one of the living room windows—probably the one Jazz apparently complained stuck all the time, if Wendy’s own grousing was anything to go by.
“The others aren’t far behind me,” Douxie said as he turned back to the group. “Archie spotted them circling back.”
Wirt watched Jazz walk over to the window and open and shut it a few times, to Douxie’s obvious amusement. “Did you fix this? It always sticks.”
Douxie flashed her an easy smile. “Magic is good about making things not stick.”
“So’s a little elbow grease,” Toby pointed out.
Claire snorted. “If you were so eager to put in a little elbow grease to sort out that problem, you would’ve fixed it before Douxie did.”
“He’s showing off!”
“Well, I for one appreciate your efforts, Douxie,” Jazz announced, “so thank you. The Fixing of the Window is cause for celebration. What’s everyone want to drink?”
“Anything with caffeine,” Toby said.
“I’ll help you get everything,” Wirt said as he pushed himself back to his feet. “I’m good at the hot drinks thing.”
“We’ve got alcohol if anyone wants it spiked,” Jazz added, “and energy drinks and pop and stuff in the fridge if anyone would rather something cold.”
Wirt still felt cold, so he wasn’t surprised when the others stuck to coffee and tea with their requests. Danny and Wendy arrived in the meantime, also requesting copious amounts of caffeine. Still, once Wirt was settled back in the living room with his own cup of coffee, he was stifling another yawn. It was well past midnight now, and Wirt still felt as exhausted as Claire, Toby, and Douxie looked.
Consequently, he wasn’t much more prepared than the last time he’d been when he saw giant claws tearing apart reality itself.
Claire was on her feet almost faster than Danny. “Is Jim okay?” she asked even before the giant bipedal wolf had stepped into the living room.
Wirt was still trying to remember how to breathe, so he missed the actual answer to her question, but by the time he got his heart rate under control, the others’ relieved expressions told him enough. (Not to mention that Wendy’s baseball bat was now abandoned by the side of her chair. It looked too big to have fit beneath her armchair, and he wasn’t convinced she’d have pulled it out seamlessly if it had, but then again….)
Most of his coffee had ended up on the floor instead of in his lap, at least. The few splashes he’d caught on his legs were more warm and wet than anything else. Jazz handed him a damp towel, and he blinked dumbly at her for a few seconds before he realized what it was for—and realized that she’d already cleaned up the floor without him noticing.
Good thing none of them expected him to fight. This would hardly be a shining endorsement for him if it took him this long to get it together.
“Thanks,” he mumbled as he sponged at the coffee stains.
He was not so out of it that he missed the sympathy in the smile Jazz flashed in his direction.
“You’re going to want warm winter clothes if you’re going to visit,” Danny warned, so that must have been an offer that Wirt had completely missed. “Like, real winter clothes. Heavy stuff. The Far Frozen isn’t poorly named.” He turned back to his terrifying friend—though, Wirt had to admit, Wulf seemed less terrifying than he had been the first time Wirt had met him. It hadn’t been a great first impression, and he really did seem to be nice. “Give us fifteen minutes to scrounge stuff? Or cut me a portal back to Amity Park so I can grab a few things from home?”
Toby turned to Wirt as the wolf ghost swiped at the air, slicing another hole in reality. Wirt tried to focus on Toby instead of staring. “You wanna come and meet Jim?”
Did he want to come? He wasn’t actually sure. He kinda just wanted to go to bed and see if life was normal again in the morning. It was a futile hope and not something he entirely wanted, but it was getting to the point where he wasn’t sure if something wasn’t making sense because magic was involved or because he was too tired to think straight.
Wirt knew he wasn’t the only one getting the offer, though. Claire was talking to Wendy and Jazz, and both of them looked to be all for it. Of course, this whole thing might not be new to Jazz. Jim, sure, that had to be new, at least on some level, but this Far Frozen place probably wasn’t if her brother was on such good terms with the people who lived there.
But Wendy was good at taking things in stride and dealing with whatever issues might come up head on.
Wirt was not.
And it wasn’t that he didn’t want to meet Jim.
It was more that he didn’t want to meet him right this second.
“You don’t think meeting a whole bunch of new people will be a lot for Jim if he’s not feeling well?” Wirt asked instead.
“We’ve done worse to him,” Toby said, which wasn’t the answer Wirt had wanted, “and you’re officially part of the team now, so he might as well meet you sooner rather than later.”
Later was fine, though. Later might be preferable. Later would mean he wouldn’t freeze to death in a different dimension.
“I really don’t mind waiting till morning.” Never mind that it was technically morning already. It was still dark, so that was night in his book. “I’m sure the others won’t mind waiting either if you and Claire and Douxie want to talk to him first.”
“Eh, Danny’s going to be coming anyway, and it’s just four new people.”
He was fighting a losing battle. Wirt knew that. He forged ahead anyway. “Plus the ghosts.”
“Jim’s met ghosts of trolls before, so that won’t be anything new.”
He’d what?
“It’s really that common?” That was certainly better than the blunt you’re kidding, right? that had been sitting on Wirt’s tongue. “Not just ghosts but troll ghosts? Or did you guys meet them once you started, y’know, travelling?”
Toby shook his head. “I don’t think it’s more common than our ghosts, though trolls probably seem rarer because of where they’d hang out. Jimbo met them pretty much as soon as this all began, though. Before he entirely knew what he was doing with the whole Trollhunter thing.”
Wow. Okay. Yet more evidence that Arcadia-Oaks was not nearly the normal place he’d once (naïvely, apparently) thought it was.
Not that he’d needed more.
Jim’s current form was evidence enough.
Still.
This was a small thing.
He had to get used to small things if he was going to have a hope of facing big things without completely breaking down.
“So, you up for it?”
Tomorrow, Wirt wanted to say. Just let me sleep first. He knew he’d dropped off for a bit, but he hardly felt rested. It might be an exaggeration to say he felt worse, but he kinda did. And it’s not like Toby wouldn’t understand. He would. He’d be happy that Wirt was telling him the truth, and chances were good Toby would gladly take him along to introduce to Jim in the morning.
But everyone else was going now, and this experience would hardly kill him.
Wirt nodded. “Yeah. As long as the others don’t mind, I’m game.”
He could pretend.
Maybe, if he pretended for long enough, he’d fool someone.
There wasn’t a high chance of that with this group, but at least they’d know he was making an effort.
