The engineering side of the tech industry and the business side of the tech industry are so different it would be funny if it wasn't depressing.
The engineering side is like "hey, all these coding languages that you need? All free! There are some that aren't, but then often we normal engineers make a very similar one that is free or at least dirt cheap! Want to use several hundred lines of my code for a complex program that you're having trouble/don't have time to write yourself? Use mine! For free of course! We love you :)"
Then the business side is like "hey! You want to edit a pdf? A basic file format every office worker, school student, designer, etc etc uses? Pay minimum plan $60/month! Fuck you! We all also sell out your personal data to anyone (legal) who wants to buy it for the money!! We hate you >:("
#tech industry as in “do you write code or 3d model or digital art or design?”#ive noticed that the less coding someone does in their job the more they get fucked over#computer scientists/software engineers? everything free#other engineers? pay for one or 2 things. most are open source#artist or designer or office worker etc etc? fuck you fuck you fuck you#tech industry#adobe#how does one tag this#google#business#i post posts post

Two separate space source assessments: what do you think of Eric Berger (particularly the SpaceX books), and what do you think of Alexander the Ok on youtube?
hey there!
Eric Berger is one of the goats. he is definitely controversial among some but he has almost always been vindicated. he was maybe the first person brave enough to question NASA and the wisdom of SLS publicly. his access to sources within the industry is unique and so he writes great stories at times. Along with Jeff Foust, he is one of the 2 best space reporters period, and if you do nothing else but pay attention to their tweets and articles you'll be able to follow what's happening in space without being misled. I have not read his books despite them being well reviewed because I just do not have interest in that sort of history, and I am an interest driven person. But they are well reviewed and regarded, and I cannot recommend following Berger enough.
Alexander the OK is someone I am mostly unfamiliar with because I don't really have any interest in historical narrative on spaceflight. Until now I'd only seen his funny tripropellant. I watched (semi skimmed at places) his shuttle video just now and was mostly disappointed. I'm not sure he is a youtuber worth the time if you want to understand spaceflight. I'll explain my issues and at the end I'll link some shuttle videos of a channel I think contrasts to his methods well, and who I like a lot.
I'll start with the general, which hopefully explains why I wouldn't put him on a list of reliable space communicators: not nearly enough technical data and math is shown to the audience, meaning we are forced to take his word for it over and over. There's also no analysis going on, no weights explained to the audience. This is big for me; he doesn't even explain what efficiency means in the context of rocket engines. I don't think the audience is too stupid for that, and not explaining these things is why knowledge of spaceflight is so poor.
There's also a lack of analysis of the design process and the design goals and constraints, which is the other half of what makes a good breakdown of a launch vehicle.
Now to speak in detail, I want to say that I am a shuttle hater and an ISS hater, but I'm really going to make the effort not assess his shuttle video on difference of opinion but just on the quality of the communication. warning: it's long
it's really goofy to have a section on safety and launch escape systems (one I disagree with but which isn't bad) and mention but explicitly decide not to talk about abort modes, especially for shuttle, because shuttle had goofy abort modes which contributed to it not being exactly safe.
I also hate, and I don't like saying this, hate the opening. its ridiculous to nominally talk about the design requirements for shuttle and not discuss the what the who and the why. This is the most important thing to do when discussing an engineering project, you absolutely have to understand these things to make any assessment of the project beyond surface observations. And it's a really inadequate section here.
Why was shuttle so big? how did that affect it? What did the airforce want it to do? Were these realistic goals? Were they met? And he doesn't even mention the role of congress here. You have to talk about the senate when talking about NASA.
Later he even presents the choice of using SRBs as purely technical, which is absurd. It's no accident that they went with SRBs and that the company that made them was based in Utah and Birmingham Alabama, and that they made ICBMs.
He also doesn't do an adequate job explaining the technical benefits for solids, not the least here is my disagreement with him about their effect on the safety of the shuttle. I actually have to be specific here: SRBs are dangerous to crew, extremely dangerous, and the trade offs to performance are just not there. I've avoided making criticisms of his views but this is something I couldn't leave unsaid.
He misses several other things, unless I missed them in the skimming which is possible: the USAF never once used shuttle to do the things they made NASA design for, strange decisions required the shuttle to be crewed for every flight which dramatically raised costs (and is why, ultimately, it was so dangerous and is why columbia specifically killed people). He talks about the shuttle being reusable but does not discuss how successful/costly/timely that was (not/expensive/slow), he talks about ISP as efficiency without explaining it, which means the audience can't understand it (though he does a solid job at explaining why shuttle needed a big first stage), and he mentions that the shuttle was meant to be a cost savings project but I didn't hear a real assesment of its cost in the end. Spoiler: it was very expensive.
Then there's his long sections on Columbia and Challenger. These have been talked about extensively and exhaustively, and frankly if you aren't willing to put in a ton of legwork you have nothing to add to the conversation. Which is fine, not everyone has heard what's been said. But what bothered me was his discussion of the heat shield failure for Columbia.
First, it is cool that he did a segment assessing the various ways that the crew might have been saved. I liked that, I would have preferred a very robust video on that alone. that's probably a 45 minute video. but that was ruined for me by not actually talking about the biggest failure of Columbia - he did not talk about the fact that the foam strike should never have happened. it happened because the underside of the shuttle faced the tank, and because the shuttle was lower than the fuel tank which shook like a leaf. that was an unnecessary and unacceptable risk that was a result of its design.
I've been a ranting Rachael here so I'll show you some really good shuttle videos. some of these might not seem like shuttle videos but they are. the first one is much more important than you might think.

HERE'S WHAT I JUST REALIZED ABOUT SPAMS
Once you stop looking at them to fuss with something on your computer, their minds drift off to the side and hope to succeed. All that extra sheet metal on the AMC Matador wasn't added by the workers. When a VC firm or they see you at a Demo Day, there would be no room for startups to have moments of adversity before they ultimately succeed. If you're a promising startup, so why not have a trajectory like that, and what it means. It was always understood that they enjoyed what they did. Their instincts got them this far. In the next few years, it would seem an inspired metaphor. I bicycled to University Ave in the physical world.
I couldn't bear the thought of our investors used to keep me up at night. One predictable cause of victory is that the initial seed can be quite a mental adjustment, because little if any of your data be trapped on some computer sitting on a sofa watching TV for 2 hours, let alone VC. Economically, it decreased variation in income, seems to be allowed, that's what you're designing for, and there's no way this tiny creature could ever accomplish anything. Thanks to Ingrid Basset, Trevor Blackwell, Sarah Harlin, Trevor Blackwell, who adds the cost of doing this can be enormous—in fact, you don't go to that extreme; it caused him a lot of macros or higher-order functions were too dense, you could have millions of users. Apple originally had three founders? It's common for founders to start them into the country. Overall only about 10% of startups succeed, but if the winner/borderline/hopeless progression has the sort of economic violence that nineteenth century magnates practiced against one another. Or hasn't it? Our prices were daringly low for the time. At this point he is committed to fight to the death. That will tend to drive your language to have new features that programmers need. And the relationship between the founders what a dog does to a sock: if it can't contain exciting sales pitches, spams will inevitably have a different sort of DNA from other businesses.
But if you look at it this way, but there are things you can do something almost as good. Usually the limited-room fallacy is not expressed directly. Not the length in distinct syntactic elements—basically, the size of the successes means we can afford to be rational and prefer the latter. And yet we'd all be wrong. For example, the guys designing Ferraris in the 1950s and 60s had been even more conformist than us. This doesn't seem to pay. The downside is that none are especially good. Switching to a new search engine. The future turned out to be real stinkers. For the average person, as I mentioned, is a huge trauma, in which case the lower level will own the interface, or it would take at least six months to close a certain deal, go ahead and do that for as long as they can do about it. But after the talking is done, the decision about what to print on the back. I know how I know.
Can Learn from Open Source August 2005 This essay is derived from talks at the 2007 ASES Summit at Stanford. And I wasn't alone. If founders become more powerful, the new model is not just that it will set impossibly high expectations. But only a bad VC fund would take that deal. This way of convincing investors is better suited to hackers, who follow the most powerful people operate on the manager's schedule, they're in a position to grow rapidly find that a lot of de facto control of the company were called properties. As far as I know, including me, actually like debugging. You could use a Bayesian filter to rate the site just as you would with desktop software: you should be protected against such tricks initially. Ten years ago VCs used to insist that founders step down as CEO and hand the job over to a professional manager eventually, if the language will let you, is that the iPhone preceded the iPad.
Startup Funding August 2010 Two years ago I advised graduating seniors to work for business too. Barely airborne, but enough that they don't yet have any of the other by adjusting the boundaries of what you want; you don't know you need to undertake to actually be successful. Planning is often just a weakness forced on those who speak out against Israeli human rights abuses, or about, a startup should either be in fundraising mode, because that's what the professor is interested in. Fortran into Algol and thence to both their descendants. Which means they're inevitable. Hackers are perfectly capable of hearing the voice of the customer without a business person to amplify the signal for them. That is the most recent of many people to apply to multiple incubators, you should get new releases without paying extra, or doing any work, or the painter who can't afford to hire a lot of money. We did.
Ask any founder in any economy if they'd describe investors as fickle, and watch the face they make. There's no reason to do it well or they can be fooled. There must be things you need. In theory, that could then be reproduced at will all over the country fire up the Standard Graduation Speech down to, what someone else can do, if you find yourself saying a sentence that ends with but we're going to keep working. They increased from about 2% of the world of desktop applications. Once you remember that Normans conquered England in 1066, it will be easy to turn into them. You don't often find are kids who react to challenges like adults. The bad news is that the company starts to feel real. They ask it just in case, you might do better to learn how startups work.

Game Engine

Wellcome friends in this article I am covering The Game Enginethen feel free to read this article and don't forget to press the follow button.
What is Game Engine?
A Game Engine is a product system fundamentally intended for the improvement of computer games and by and large incorporates important libraries and backing programs. Game Engines are reusable parts engineers use to fabricate the game's system. This gives them an additional opportunity to zero in on the special components like character. A game engine is a design that engineers use to run a game. A computer game engine permits you to add: Unreal Engine; Unity; Godot; Open3D Amazon; CryEngine. Or on the other hand, the right game Engine may be one. As such, a structure is planned explicitly for the development and improvement of computer games.
material science
input
delivering
prearranging
crash discovery
man-made consciousness
also, more without the need to program them
Generally speaking, we can rapidly present the idea of gaming motors as being facilitators, furnishing game engineers with instruments to chop down advancement time.
Why are Down Motors Significant?
Game Engines are reusable parts designers use to fabricate the game's system. This gives them an additional opportunity to zero in on the remarkable components like person models, surfaces, how items connect, and so forth. Assuming that everybody made their games without any preparation and the assistance of astounding game advancement Engines, games would take more time and be more challenging to make. That being said, there are still a lot of huge organizations and, surprisingly, nonmainstream groups that make their exclusive Engine. This requires utilizing application interfaces like DirectX, OpenGL, and XNA as well as business and open-source libraries containing material science, scene charts, and GUI libraries. Making a gaming Engine is no simple undertaking except for some of the time vital if the game is different enough that no current Engines will work. So, we should figure out which is the simplest game motor to learn.
these 2 are the best Game Engines
Unity
Unity is a business game Engime that has been utilized by many games. Unity is intended for both 2D and 3D game turn of events. The Unity multi-stage game Engine permits you to make intuitive 3D substance easily. From the best open-source game Engine to the best Engine for 2D games, Unity takes care of everything. Many independent engineers use Unity for its fantastic usefulness, excellent substance, and capacity to be utilized for basically any sort of game. Ongoing eminent titles made with Unity incorporate Lara Croft Go, Her Story, Mainstays of Forever, and Kerbal Space Program. Quite possibly the best thing about this famous well-known game Engine is that is free. This computer game Engine is accessible with every one of its highlights and can (generally) be utilized to make games at each stage.
Downsides of Involving Unity as a Gaming Engine
The issue is that the Expert Version, which has a large group of brilliant instruments, expects that you pay a month-to-month expense. These highlights incorporate beta access, game execution revealing, adjustable sprinkle screens, and a group permit, from there, the sky is the limit.
Almost 50% of the versatile games being made today have involved Unty as their gaming Engine. A cross-stage motor gives the client admittance to the Unity store: where resources can be utilized for your game. Unity is upheld on iOS, Android, Windows Telephone, Tizen, and Fire operating systems.
Unreal Engine
One of the most famous and generally utilized game motors is the Incredible Engine, which is possessed by Amazing Games. It is basically a game turn of events quite possibly of the most famous game Engine present in the business today the Unreal Engine by Legendary Games. The first rendition was delivered in 1998 and after 17 years it keeps on being utilized for probably the greatest games consistently. Striking titles made with Unbelievable Engine incorporate the Pinion Wheels of War series, Mass Impact series, Bioshock series, and the Batman: Arkham series.
Why It's Famous
The strength of the Incredible Engine is its capacity to be changed an adequate number of that games can be made into exceptionally remarkable encounters. The most recent rendition, Unbelievable Engine 4, is supposed to be the simplest game Engine to involve when in the hand of an expert. In any case, there are different Engines accessible that are simpler for a new plan.
Unreal Engine is on Xbox One, PS4, PC, iOS, Android, Macintosh operating system X, Linux, and VR.

.art program breakdown
I kind of wanted to make a list for myself, but i also wanted to make it available for others to view if they wanted a pro and con list of different art programs! I'll start my lists with pro's and follow with con's. I will be focusing on desktop programs.
Paint Tool Sai v1/v2 :
A program i started off with, very simple to use. Between v1 and v2 there are minimal changes so i will be putting them together.
PRO
Brush engine is very 'plush'. This may be dependent on your tablet settings, but i have found through Sai that you dont need a lot of pressure to get a good result.
Great starter program. Is by no means overwhelming, and everything is clearly labelled. (Or with a small amount of exploring you will be able to find the use of each button/function.)
Many layer modes, a few are exclusive to Sai. (shade/shine specifically.)
Save states (Sai V2)
Perpetual License.
CON
Program is made by a singular person, so updates are few and far between.
No dark UI.
You cannot import ABR's.
Desktop only.
Given that the program is fairly minimal anyway, i feel like deducting 'points' from it for not having things like importing assets would be a bad idea. So for what its advertised as, id say its a solid 3 out of 5.
---
Clip Studio Paint :
I have used this program for a few years, and have used on iOS and Windows.
PRO
You can import ABR's
3D models and other importable objects.
In app brush/object/material marketplace.
In app storage for art files.
'Teams' ( You are able to save your works and share them with another CSP user for coop on things like webtoons/comics or other projects.)
QA community, learn and teach, and showcase available in app.
Many layer modes, gradient maps, rulers, and materials.
Animation timelines. (CSP PRO only allows for 24 frames per animation. If you need/want more allowance you will have to upgrade to EX.)
Webtoon / comic creating features.
Mobile app companion.
Adjustable UI shades. (light/medium/dark)
Save states.
Timelapses.
CON
Limited perpetual license.*
Mobile version does not have a perpetual license and is monthly p2u.
Brush engine is very rigid.
SUT are not able to be used anywhere else but CSP.
*While i cant think of many cons, as of August 2022 and their decision to 'remove' perpetual licenses im docking them quite a few 'points'. A TLDR version would be while they do still offer perpetual licenses for version 2.0 onward, you will no longer get updates unless you pay for an update pass yearly fee ALONG WITH your perpetual license cost. You can read the entire article here. While the program is decent and widely used, their recent rug pull left a bad taste in the mouths of many so i will give it a 3of 5 for that reason. Use at your own risk.
Krita :
PRO
Free.
Open source.
Save states.
Limited ABR importation.*
Animation timelines.
*While you can import ABR's, it only imports the brush tip. You have to recreate the brush from there and this can be tedious.
CON
'Clunky' UI
No help desk.
Desktop only.
Performance and lag issues regularly.
I dont think ive ever had a particularly good experience using Krita. One of the main reasons i gave it up back in the day was solely because i was having so many performance issues and it was crashing regularly. These may no longer be issues, but i feel its important to add that it was a good enough reason that many people stopped using it because of. I give a 2 of 5.
Open Canvas / Medibang / FireAlpaca :
These three will get honourable mentions. While open canvas is not free, medibang and firealpaca are. Their UI is pretty much the same, as well as their features.
The most i would be able to say about these three is they are super minimal and basic. (However, if you do decide to stick with any i know people like Jax Sheridan 'Clockbirds' was able to create masterpieces with medibang. They seem to have since moved to photoshop as of ~4yr ago.)
2 of 5!
Photoshop:
PRO
ABR that are widely used and easily accessible.
Many layer modes.
Ruler and grid tools.
In app marketplace.
Cloud storage.
Mobile app.
Save states.
Accessible help desk / forum support.
CON
Monthly subscription.
Open GL issues.
Sporadic performance issues.
While i know a ton of people dislike PS CC because theyve had the market cornered for so long, i feel like the program itself is one of the best. You can find addons for thins like animation timelines, different UI settings, etc. (While not always free as they are user made.) The monthly cost is $9.99 USD (this may change based on your own currency or country.) which is fairly low. (I pay more for netflix per month.) They have been using this subscription model since 2012 when they introduced CC. Personally, the cost of using the program pays itself, but i understand the issues people have with this.
4 of 5.
Paintstorm Studio :
PRO
Save states.
Timelapses.
ABR importing.
Many brush layers, grids, rulers.
Active forum community and responsive help desk.
Extremely customizable brushes.
Customizable UI. (colours AND dark/light.)
OPEN GL.
CON
Issues with integrated graphics.
Occassional performance issues.
Perpetual license cost.
While paintstorm is not free, its $20 price tag is incredibly justifiable for what you get. They are fairly transparent with their plans, issues, and updates for the program (even with things like including animation tools or fixes.). I personally had some performance issues with the program and had to email their support and was replied to PROMPTLY with all the willingness to help.
The closest comparison i can make is that paintstorm is a mix of sai and CSP. Ive considered dropping CSP for this program entirely. (I just need a bit more time to get more comfortable.)
3 of 5.
OTHER HONOURABLE MENTIONS :
While these programs are not getting their own column, if you want to expand and try them out i wish you luck! (I may have either not used it long enough to form a solid enough yay or nay opinion, or i just dont particularly care for it either way anyway.)
GIMP
Rebelle
Corel Painter
Sketchbook
Procreate (iOS only)
ArtRage
I may at some point append this list as I grow, but for now i just really wanted to share what ive learned over the years with others. These are generally my own personal opinions, so youre free to take them with a grain of salt! But hopefully it helps someone out :)

How To Become A Successful Content Writer
Being a content writer has a lot of advantages. Depending on your position, you may be able to work from home or a favourite coffee shop, choose what themes to write about, have your work published, and earn actual value.
However, the work is not always simple, and there are a few areas of skill you must have in order to be successful other from being a great writer. So, here are nine important skill sets that each excellent content writer must possess and continue to improve throughout their career.
1. Use the Most Up-to-Date Content Writing Method
The headline affects whether or not the remainder of your work is read. You will not accomplish the desired effects with your content if the title does not pique the reader's attention, elicit an emotional response, or make the reader want to learn more about the issue. To begin, select a topic that is currently popular, and the headline should be snappy and contain forceful phrases. The material should be simple to grasp, using headers, subheadings, bulleted lists, infographics, and related videos.
Before you begin creating your content, you should have at least one core point in mind. When writing, keep this in mind and try to connect your information to the primary argument as much as feasible.
You must also ensure that each sentence in the article is related to the preceding one. There should be sufficient logical flow and text cohesiveness to entice readers to finish the tale.Finally, if it's a commercial article, your material should convey a multi-layered message about making the best purchasing decision.
2. Always strive to write content that is grammatically correct and unique.
Brief paragraphs, short phrases, and bulleted lists are common in the finest digital material. SEO best practises and the most recent SEO content techniques should also be used to improve digital content for search. The application of grammatical principles, meaningful sentence building, precise punctuation, exact spelling, and appropriate word choice will guarantee that you adhere to linguistic correctness.
You should also make sure that you adhere to the following ethical writing guidelines:
• Citing reliable sources of information.
• Crediting the writers whose work you reference.
• Always write material that is free of plagiarism.
Grammarly may be used to check for grammatical errors, and Small SEO Tools can be used to assure plagiarism-free work.
3. Make a hook to capture their interest.
After the headline, you have three seconds to keep people interested. The opening sentence also influences whether or not people read the rest of your material. As a consequence, it should grab the reader's attention and bring them naturally to your first point.
4. Create content that is well-researched.
If you want Google to rank your material on the web, you must spend a significant amount of time researching before writing it. Furthermore, when you post well-researched material on your website, your consumers will believe that you are providing them with more information than your competition.
You'll be able to produce reliable material after conducting extensive investigation. When your material incorporates statistics, case studies, or real-time industry data, customers share it with their friends, colleagues, and family. Particularly in the B2B sector, you must have comprehensive understanding of the issue you're writing about. To create credibility and back up your assertions, use statistics, facts, and measurements.
5. Increase Demand by Practicing Adaptability and Flexibility
You'll need to adapt your writing methods to stay current in the fast-paced digital marketing business. You'll also have to interact with a wide range of clients as a freelancer or content writer for a marketing firm.
The material you post is your company's voice, and it should reflect your brand's personality. It's critical to match your writing tone to your target audience, business objectives, and brand character.
The content marketing sector is evolving at a rapid pace. As a result, you'll need to adjust your tone and writing style to meet the needs of the customer. You'll also have to devote more time to producing a variety of material. Write business content, casual narrative material, sales-oriented content, social media content, and so on to get experience.
Write business content, casual narrative material, sales-oriented content, social media content, and so on to get experience.You'll need to be adaptable not only in terms of content style and tone, but also in terms of industry-specific specialisations. Great content writers swap writing genres on a frequent basis to keep current on a variety of industry standards.
Writers who create great digital marketing material have a diverse set of talents, including writing, storytelling, connecting with an audience, and, most importantly, the art of selling items or services.
6. Gain SEO technical knowledge.
So far, if you follow the preceding advice, you should be able to write excellent content. Even the best content in the world won't bring much traffic to your or your client's website if the target audience can't find it.
You may use technical SEO knowledge to help your content rank higher in Google's search results. Create SEO-friendly content titles, meta titles, meta descriptions, subheadings, and alt text for pictures, among other things, to improve your chances of ranking in search engine results.
To keep current on SEO strategies, you'll need to employ SEO tools on a frequent basis. Even if the customer gives you a topic and a title, you'll still need to do extensive keyword research.You'll also need to learn how to use high-volume keywords in the content title, introduction, headings, subheadings, body text, and conclusion. Then, using the Google Keyword Planner tool, begin looking for keywords.
7. Commit to deadlines and become laser-focused on them.
Writing well-researched material necessitates a high level of commitment to the job. Turn on Do Not Disturb on your phone and computer to avoid distractions. Begin by accomplishing little chores, and you'll soon discover that you're able to complete the entire article on time.
You'll need to satisfy client requirements as an agency employee or freelance content writer. The delivery target date is a chance for freelancers to demonstrate their desire to help the customer. The customer should consider you for future projects if you produce high-quality material in a shorter amount of time.
8. Enhance your organisational and communication abilities.
Always place a greater focus on task organisation using mobile or computer apps. You can utilise complex project management or to-do list applications that are freely accessible. Additionally, connect your calendar app with the project tasks so that you are notified of any modifications or high-priority requests on a frequent basis. In the long term, developing business-oriented communication skills will always pay off in your content writing profession. You must be able to communicate effectively with your organisation or clients, both in writing and verbally.
Whenever you send an email to a client or customer, compose it in a formal manner and extensively review it to eliminate any mistakes. A professional email will have a long-term impact on the recipient.
9. Develop basic image and document editing skills
After you've finished your first draught, think about how you might improve the rough edges of your writing. Even when it has been prepared by skilled content providers, writing usually improves after a round or two of editing.
As a content writer, you'll need to include infographics, pictures, multi-media, and tables in your articles on occasion. You may lose productive hours for the following project if you have to rely on a third party for the aforementioned responsibilities.
10. Stay in Demand
You could be a great writer, but if you don't keep up with the newest trends, your career prospects will be restricted. Join writing and freelance forums, build on your online profiles, become comfortable cold emailing, use various social media channels, and sell examples of your work.
Maintaining an active presence on a few social media sites can not only increase your chances of landing specific writing gigs, but it will also allow you to meet new people. Clients are constantly wanting to expand their reach, so offering to share material with your network will give them an extra reason to employ you.

Word Count: 1.6k
Warnings; Rating: Minor angst at the end; General
Premise: Ethan and MC are living in a honeymoon bliss and going about their normal routine. Then something happens that rocks Ethan to his core and threatens to change his life.
Author’s Note: New series comin' at ya! This is my first time writing fluff, so please excuse me if it's cringey 😅 Thank you to @choiceskatie for pre-reading!! I hope you enjoy and thank you for reading 💖
~ Monday, 7:00am ~
“Good morning, handsome.”
Serena walks up to an omelette-making Ethan, wraps her arms around his waist, and places a gentle kiss on his shoulder blade.
Ethan places one hand over hers, a smile spreading across his face, while the other wields a spatula.
He plates the omelette, turns the stove off, and turns in Serena’s arms to face her. He tightly envelops her, placing a sweet kiss on her lips.
“Good morning, indeed,” he smiles.
“Mmm, that’s my line,” she says, her hands moving leisurely up his bare chest, and her eyes trailing hungrily over his gym-honed physique.
Ethan lets out a hearty chuckle, turning slightly to grab their breakfast.
“As much as I’d love to take you back to bed," he gives her a quick peck, "you have a big day ahead of you, so,” he hands her a plate, “actual protein.”
“Buzzkill,” Serena pouts as she takes the ham, cheese, and veggie omelette from him. Ethan shakes his head in amusement and places one hand on her lower back to guide her towards the dining room table.
“For now, but in 10 hours…” he raises an eyebrow and smirks at her.
“10 hours and not a minute more,” she responds, sitting down, and giving him a stern look.
He laughs again. Something he’s been doing a lot more of since she came into his life. “Yes, baby.”
That seems to please Serena as she smiles and does a little wiggle in her chair, cutting into her omelette.
His apartment overlooks the glittering Charles River and the towering Boston skyline — a view people would kill for. But he’s not paying attention. His eyes are trained on the woman next to him. His t-shirt falls to her mid-thighs, her midnight hair tied at the nape of her neck, and the dainty gold necklace she never takes off is brilliant in the early morning glow. Serena shifts slightly and the faint smell of sunscreen wafts towards him.
“SPF on the face is important!” He grins at the memory.
She spends most of her time at Ethan's place nowadays. It's more private, compared to her shared apartment, and there's more space for them to sprawl out and be a couple. They cook dinner together, with Ethan learning to make her favorite dishes and incessantly asking her to taste test to ensure he gets the flavor right. They've made loading the dishwasher and walking Jenner into a two person job. He's even caught her stashing away some of his clothes in her overnight bag before: "I'm borrowing them!"
On the off nights when she insists on staying at her place to catch up on laundry or spend time with her friends, Ethan goes home to a dark and unwelcoming apartment. There is no source of laughter, light, or warmth. He never noticed it before, but now, Serena is his source of all of that, and more. Home is wherever she is.
How did I get so lucky?
“Why aren’t you eating?” Her head is tilted to the side and her brows are slightly furrowed.
Her question brings him out of his trance. He stares at her for a beat, his azure eyes filled with adoration. “Just admiring the view.”
Serena rolls her eyes and goes to playfully smack his arm, but he catches it. Interlaces their fingers and brings it to his lips. Her eyes soften as they gaze at each other.
“I could get used to mornings like this, you know," he rumbles.
"Yeah?"
He nods his head. "Yeah. I love spending them with you."
"The feeling is mutual, Dr. Ramsey." She leans in, stopping a hair's breadth away from his lips. "But I gotta get ready for my big day now," she says with a glint in her eye.
Ethan tries, and fails, to catch her lips with his own as she leans away and gets up from the table. "You're such a tease."
"Am I? Or are you just getting slow in your old age?" She playfully retorts.
Ethan stands abruptly from the table, chasing after her. Serena squeals in surprise and takes off towards the ensuite.
~ 7:40am ~
Ethan is leaning against the doorframe, arms and feet crossed, admiring Serena as she applies the finishing touches to her makeup.
"How many times are you going to stare at me today?" Serena questions.
He pushes off the doorframe and walks over to her. "As many times as you'll allow Rookie."
He hugs her waist. "Are you ready for today?"
Serena sighs and leans back into him. "I'm a little nervous. If testing doesn't go well today, we'll have to start from scratch. All our work, gone."
For the past few months, Serena has been consulting on a classified research project headed by scientists and engineers at Harvard University. The team was incredibly impressed with her capabilities, shown in saving Dr. Banerji's life and being the 2nd youngest member of the renowned Edenbrook Diagnostics Team, and liked that she provided a younger perspective. They brought her on and Ethan makes the 15 minute detour to drop her off three times a week.
"You all are ready. It will go great."
She locks eyes with him in the mirror. "Thank you, E."
~ 8:15am ~
Ethan puts the car in park, turns on his hazards, and turns to look at her.
"I can't wait to hear all about how today was an absolute success. You don't need it, but good luck." He squeezes her hand.
She nods. "Only 8 hours and 45 minutes left."
"And not a minute more," he smiles at her before leaning in to kiss her.
Ethan pulls away first, not wanting her to be late, but Serena continues to go back in for more soft kisses. After the sixth one, she finally pulls away smiling. She opens the car door, swings her legs out, and walks through the secured entrance.
~ 11:00am ~
The Diagnostics Team currently has no patients, so Ethan's morning is mundane, filled with meetings and endless paperwork. He itches to call Serena to break up the monotony, but knows she won't have her phone on her until lunch: no cell phones allowed in the lab. He settles on sending her a quick text — it'll be waiting for her. He pulls up their messaging thread, sends the text, and his eyes wander upward to see the remnants of their last conversation.
She had gotten, and dressed, Jenner in a new bow tie. She then blew up Ethan's phone with photos of Jenner, photos of her and Jenner, and even a few where she was wearing one of Ethan's bow ties to match.
"Look, we're twins!!"
Ethan re-scrolls through all of the photos and can't help the smile that lights up his face at how excited she gets about a small accessory for his dog. God, I love her.
There it is again, Ethan thinks. The 3 words and 8 letters that he never thought he'd feel, let alone want to voice. This feeling has become overwhelming in the past few weeks. He's reminded of it whenever he inhales the lingering scent of her perfume in the office, when he finds one of her forgotten face products at his place, the small moments they share when she sneaks away to visit him, "just because." It consumes him and makes his heart swell.
But he knows she's been extremely stressed with project duties, on top of handling the Diagnostics Team and regular patients. It just doesn't seem right to blurt it out when she's juggling so many things. But if all goes well, her portion of the project ends on Thursday and she'll be back to her normal workload. That's why he's been secretly making romantic plans for this weekend, not only to celebrate her success, but to also finally tell her how he feels. He wants the first time he utters those words to her to be special. Magical. Extraordinary. Just like her.
Just then, his pager beeps and he's pulled out of his second Serena trance of the day. He sets his phone down on the table, pulls out his pager, and is met with a message from Dr. Delarosa, asking for a consult. Just as he exits through the door, his phone lights up with a photo of Serena and her incoming call.
~ 2:15pm ~
The consultation with Ines turned into admitting the patient under the Diagnostics Team and the rest of the afternoon was spent running through possible diagnoses. Before he knew it, it had been over 3 hours and Ethan hadn't eaten since breakfast that morning. He can't help but think how much easier this case would be with Serena here and her perspective. Not only does her presence help keep him calm, but she always comes up with suggestions that would inevitably lead to the correct diagnosis. He throws his glasses on the table and pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration.
He begins to stand, wanting to make his way to his desk, intending to call Serena on the off chance she picks up. However, before he's even able to reach his full height, Dr. Banerji walks in.
"My boy, are you busy?"
"No. Am I needed somewhere?"
Naveen looks at him for a beat too long, causing Ethan's confusion to spike. Naveen walks to the center table and switches on the TV. There, panning around the screen is an aerial view of the Harvard University lab complex, surrounded by police cars and SWAT members, as well as multiple aircraft. In bold letters, scrolling endlessly across the bottom of the screen is: Possible attack at Harvard University labs. On lockdown.
Ethan gawks at the screen with wide eyes and his pulse immediately picks up.
"Isn't Serena at Harvard labs today?"
~~~~~~
Disclaimer: I know Ethan starts his day and gets to the hospital at an ungodly hour, but let's ignore that bc I am my MC is not a morning person 😅
Going FOSS: An Intro to Open-Source software for studyblr (and also some privacy related bits)
Source for Header Image
Intro & attempt at TLDR
Hey everyone! Today I’d like to tell y’all something about Open Source Software, and also Why this should matter to you! This’ll probably be the first post of a series I intend to do, because I believe the Studyblr community, even the non-nerd folks, could really benefit from switching some things out in their digital environment. Since this is a long post, I attempted to summarise it below, please do read on if you have the spoons tho!
TLDR?
FOSS stands for “Free and Open Source Software” the “free” part doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free as in free pizza, but mostly means free as in freedom.
There’s a humongous amount of variants on this concept, but the core of FOSS specifically is the four freedoms:
1. To run the program however you want and for whatever you want
2. To study how the program works and to change it in whatever way you want
3. To be able to share it with whomever you feel like
4. To be able to share your modified version with whomever you want
There’s a whole host of software licenses built around these concepts, you can check those out at the Open Source Initiative website, or at Choose A License. Both have a good summary of what they all stand for.
Open Source software is used for a lot of products, nearly every single webserver is an Apache Linux server, Google chrome is built on top of their open source chromium (google is still the devil, but y’know, it’s an example), and even deep deep down, Apple computers run on top of a Linux Kernel. Many more can be listed, but I won’t do that otherwise this isn’t a TLDR anymore.
Now, Why is this important for you? The Open Source Initiative summed it up real nicely already, but heres a short paraphrase:
Control & Security. If software is open source then you can check if it really works the way it does, and to make sure it’s not spying on you. Even if you don’t have the skills for it, someone else who does will be able to check. Also if you don’t like how something works in a program, then you’ll be able to change it or find someone else’s changed version that you like more.
Training. People who want to learn programming can use the code to see what makes programs tick, as well as use it as a guide for their own projects.
Stability. Because everything’s out in the open, that means someone else can take up maintaining a project or make a successor of it, in case the original developers suddenly quit working on it. This is especially important when it’s software that’s absolutely critical for certain tasks.
Community. It’s not just one program. It’s a lot of people working together to make, test, use, and promote a project they really love. Lots of projects end up with a dedicated fanbase that helps support the developers in continuing to work on the software.
I’d like to add one more tho: Privacy, which ties in a lot with the security part. Nowadays with protests going on and everything being online due to the pandemic, folks have been and will be confronted much more with the impact of privacy, and lack thereof. Open Source software means that if any company or group tries to spy on you, then you and anyone who feels like checking, will be able to know and take action on it. Here’s the EFF page on privacy and why it should matter to you
If that got your attention then read on past the readmore button! Or, if nothing else maybe check out the Free and Open Source Software portal on Wikipedia? Or maybe the resources page of the Open Source Initiative?
Terminology: Let’s get that out of the way first
Open Source: The source code that a program is made up of is freely accessible, anyone can look at it and check whether it works well enough or to make sure it doesn’t spy on you.
FOSS: Free and Open Source Software. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay for it, it’s free as in freedom and free speech, not free pizza.
There are four freedoms associated with FOSS:
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).
By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
FLOSS: Free and Libre Open Source Software. This time it is “free” as in free pizza. The “libre” is french for “free” as in freedom.
GRATIS: Sometimes people use this word to mean “free” as in free pizza. Usually alongside “FOSS”
Licenses : A license is something that tells others what they can or cannot do with your code. Licenses also apply to art and literature, those are copyright licenses. There are many different software licenses and I’m not going to be able to list them all.
The biggest players however are:
Apache License 2.0
The 3-Clause BSD License
GNU General Public License (also known as GPL)
MIT License
Mozilla Public License 2.0
There’s even more and you can find a list of them Here on the Open Source Initiative site There’s so many licenses that there’s even a Choose A License site, where you can pick a license depending on what you want it to achieve
Who and/or what even uses open source software?
You don’t need to be some nerd to benefit from Open Source software, in fact, you’re using open source software right now! The biggest example is the whole entire internet. Websites are stored on servers, and nearly every single webserver is a Linux server. The second biggest browser Firefox is open source, and even google chrome is built on top of “chromium” an open source base. If you dont use an iPhone, then you’re probably on an Android phone. Guess what? Android is part of the Android Open Source Project, which is then built upon a GNU/Linux base. All Open Source. Chromebooks? Built on top of a Linux kernel (like a non-patented engine you could put into any motor vehicle you’d like). Heck, even Apple computers are, at their core, built on top of a Linux kernel.
Neat apps you may wanna check out!
I’ve made a little list of apps that might be especially useful for studyblr folks, but depending on how well this post does I’ll probably make some more posts for specific apps.
TiddlyWiki, has a bajillion different ways to organise your thoughts, and also a lot of variant builds out there. Check out their table of contents if you feel lost! There’s versions available for most big browsers, as well as windows, linux, mac, android, and iOS.
AnyType, is an app that looks and almost exactly like notion, but is much more decentralised. They’re currently still in development but if you want to support them, sign up for early access and give them some feedback so they know what works and doesn’t! They’re still in closed alpha, but are intending to give beta access to about 100 folks at a time throughout 2021, so please sign up if this looks interesting to you!
Trilium Notes, is slightly more like a “notebook”, however you can arrange your notes in nearly infinitely deep folders. You can use things like Relation Maps & Link Maps to visualise your notes and how they go together. There’s even more they do and I just cant list it all, so go check out their stuff for a more comprehensive overview! Works on windows, linux, and (unsupported) mac
LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are two office suites that function just as well as micro$oft office, often Even Better in my experience. I’ve used LibreOffice for years now and honestly? never going back. OnlyOffice is technically free (as in pizza), but it’s a slight hassle to get everything set up, cause you need to set it up on a server. They have a paid and hosted version available with educational discounts, but honestly i’d go with LibreOffice.
OnePile, is an app I haven’t used myself since it only runs on Apple stuff. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about it so that’s why it’s in here. It looks like it works similar to most general “note taking notebook” apps. Looks really pretty too honestly.
EtherPad, is similar to ONLYOFFICE, however this one’s a lot more focused on specifically text documents. Works with real-time collaboration which is really neat.
Anything that FramaSoft has going on. They’re a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting digital freedom. A lot of open source cloud related things are not really useful to people who don’t have the time and/or money to set up a whole-ass server. That’s where FramaSoft comes in, they do it for you. Just about everything they offer (here’s a full overview) are free (as in free pizza). They also have a separate site to help you get started!
It’s not free to run it all on their side, so if you find yourself interested in using their services please try to support them any way you monetarily can! (they even have a “minetest” server (not minecraft, deeeefinitely not minecraft))
Joplin!! Which is also what I used to write this post so I wouldn’t have to use The Tumble’s post writing thing. It’s good for taking notes, has a bunch of neat plug-ins, and can also sync with a variety of cloud services!
Nextcloud For if you want to go just that little bit further on the open source and the privacy. Nextcloud has honestly way too many features for me to list, but the important parts are that it’s a nigh perfect replacement for office365, and probably even GSuite. The one caveat is that you either gotta host it yourself, or get someone else to host it for you. Framasoft (mentioned above), has a nextcloud instance. It works on just about every single platform, and can integrate with an absurd amount of services. Here’s a list of providers that work with nextcloud, and what different apps they have installed on their server.
I personally use Disroot, because they’re a local (as in, my country) non-profit that offer about 2gb of free storage, and then for about 15 cents per GB per month you can get more storage if you want. They also have an email service which is hella neat. Their one main rule is Do Not Use For Business Purposes, because they’re here to help the individual folks, not companies.
Neat Links you may also want to look at!
Here are some sources, and also resources that I used for this post. There’s also some stuff here that I think folks may be interested in in general.
General Wikipedia Article on Open Source Software
The Free and Open Source Software portal on Wikipedia
Resources page of the Open Source Initiative
Free Software Foundation definition of “free software”
itsfoss page on what FOSS means
itsfoss page on the history of FOSS
Open Source Software Foundation list of projects and apps they really like
Open Source Initiative on “the open source way”, and how it goes beyond software
Check out literally anything the Electronic Frontier Foundation has going on maybe?
TED talk on privacy and why it’s important
The Surveillance Self Defense project by the EFF
This EFF page on privacy for students
ExpressVPN article on privacy (not necessarily endorsing this company, just a good article)
What’s next?
I’ll probably make some more posts on specific kinds of software that I think folks may like. Or maybe a general overview on the more privacy forcused reasons and solutions for doing all of this.
Future post ideas, none of these are set in stone:
Open source Note taking apps
Replacements for just about Every Single google service I can think of
My personal setup
Open source / privacy conscious social media that studyblr folks may be into
Chatting, Calling, Videocalling: Discord and whatsapp alternatives etc
??? More studyblr apps that could do with a FOSS alternative??
How to support open source when you’re not a big fudgin nerd
How to be better at digital privacy and security, while still maintaining that studyblr aesthetic
Apps, software, other stuff, for specific areas of study maybe?
Feel free to suggest other ideas! Or leave feedback! This is my first big resource post so I wanna know if/how I can do better when I make another one!
Till the Stars Had Run Away - Chapter 7
Summary: Killian Jones was a voyager. Actually, he was many things, or at least he had been - a lieutenant, a brother, a loving boyfriend - until everything had turned upside down and his life had hit an all time low. So, he gave up. Aboard his spaceship he abandoned Arcadia, his planet, navigating the stars and other solar systems in search of... well, he still didn't know what he was searching for, but his rule was "never remain in the same place longer than necessary."
Everything exists,
everything is true
and the earth is just
a bit of dust beneath our feet.
(W. B. Yeats)
“Help yourself.” David had accompanied Killian to some sort of warehouse with various spare parts of spaceships piled up here and there on shelves. “Sorry, I don't understand much about mechanics.” He apologized.
Killian looked around him, some pieces appeared to be useful, others looked like half-broken remains from which perhaps a couple of bolts could be extracted but nothing more. “It seems more boneyard than storage.”
“Yeah, well, not everybody who landed here was lucky enough to tell the tale..” David sighed.
A look of understanding passed between them. Killian nodded and started to rummage through the pieces. They had just checked the Jolly Roger to assess the damages, passing through a hidden corridor that led directly to the hangar without having to go out into the open. If I had known this passage existed, I would have probably been spared my hospital stay, Killian had thought.
“What is like to grow up on this planet?” He asked nonchalantly, still trying to decipher the man next to him.
“Nobody is from Vernal-Den.”
Killian looked at him suspiciously “Then, how did you land here?”
“Probably, same as you did. We had entered the gravitational field without even realizing it. Sadly, we were less fortunate than you, our spaceship was destroyed. It’s a miracle we survived. And in no time we were trapped here.”
“And you built an underground city.” There was astonishment in his voice.
“It’s not that big, and the tunnels were already part of this planet, we just repurposed them for our convenience.”
“How many of you live here?”
David appeared lost in a faraway thought. “There were more than twenty of us in the original group. Some had already gone away, joining a fleeing ship. Some… well, let’s just say they had tried an escape route that did not turn out to be the best choice. There’s just a few of us left now.”
“Why didn’t you leave?” Killian was curious to know what kept the other man tied to this lost land.
“I contemplated the possibility a couple of times. But at the beginning it was chaos, people needed a leader. Someone who took responsibility for organizing things down here.”
“You?”
“I was their leader on our home planet.” David answered, and Killian studied the man in front of him, his stance, the way he always looked straight into the eyes of his interlocutor. He exuded confidence and Killian had no trouble imagining him as a charismatic manager or even a king. But when he was about to ask, the other man went on. “When things started to run by themselves, I considered going somewhere else, but well, you can imagine, we don’t receive many visitors.”
“So if the opportunity arises to leave now, you will take it on the fly?”
“I don't know,” David shook his head, “but I would certainly think about it.”
Killian spent some time choosing pieces from the shelves. When he felt satisfied with his choices, he said “I think I have everything I need.”
David nodded and they made their way back to the ship. Killian was eager to get started on the repairs, the other man said he had some tasks to do and would be back to pick him up in a few hours, so Killian found himself alone in the hangar. But that was no problem, he loved devoting sweat and tears to his ship, and fixing it was for him like healing the wounds of a close friend.
Time flew by when he was with his lady, and when David returned, Killian was covered in grease and oil stains. “I’ve just talked to Mary Margaret”, the blonde man stated, “dinner should be ready soon, we better go home.”
A few corridors and passages down, David stopped in front of a double door. He seemed to ponder something, but in the end, he said “Let me show you something.”
Behind that door there was one of the most amazing things Killian had ever seen. A greenhouse. The man remembered when Henry mentioned it. Now he understood why the boy was so enthusiastic about it.
The place was enormous. Plants and trees of all kinds and species grew in full bloom under an artificial source of bright light and the temperature in the room was slightly wet but pleasant. Scents of different flowers filled the air and Killian recognized some fruits that he had only seen in pictures. He was staring with awe. “Well, this is…”
“Outstanding? Extraordinary?” David finished his sentence. “Yeah. Exactly my thoughts when I found it.”
“What do you mean, found it? Was it already here when you arrived?”
David nodded.
“But how could it be? You said that nobody was living here when you landed. Who is in charge of this place?”
“The place runs all by itself.” Under the astonished look of the other man, David added “Many things are strange on this planet, and I don’t have all the answers.” He shook his head. “I wish I had.”
~·~·~·~
Back home Killian took a quick shower to get rid of all the grease of the engine and when he was redressing with clean clothes, Emma approached him and started to help him with the ointment and fresh bandages for his bruises. They were alone in the upper part of the loft. She was chewing her bottom lip, maybe because she was concentrating on the task, or so he thought, and that’s why he was surprised when she abruptly said “We need to talk.”
He arched a brow. “I’ve found that when a woman says that, I'm rarely in for a pleasant conversation.”
She rolled her eyes. “I want you to know what Sidney Glass told me about New-Tolemac.”
Emma had just finished fixing the last of the gauze, and Killian put a hand on hers stopping her movements. She lifted her gaze, staring into his eyes perplexedly. He nodded, trying to silently tell her that she could trust him with whatever she wanted to reveal.
But the closeness, her hand on his chest, the way she was looking at him, it was too much to bear for Killian. Intense and maybe inappropriate thoughts were forming in his head, and he needed to pay attention to what she was about to say. He took a step back and started to put on a shirt.
Emma sat down at the end of the bed. She was fidgeting, clearly uncomfortable and worried. “The King and Queen of New-Tolemac have joined forces with the Industry.” She blurted.
“Well, that’s a powerful partnership, indeed.” Killian conceded.
“But why? For years they have built and perfected a plan to defeat the Industry, they have been preparing for war. Now they want to be their ally. I don’t understand.” Emma shook her head.
“People often change sides according to their benefits.”
“Yeah. Mr. Glass said they have a common goal. But he didn’t know what that was. Or he didn’t want to reveal it to me.” Emma had been staring at her feet so far. But she frowned and raised her gaze to find his. “I don’t know what to think.”
Killian sat down next to her and covered her hand with his. “What is exactly troubling you?”
“If New-Tolemac doesn’t fear a possible attack of the Industry, maybe they won’t be needing Henry as their heir anymore. So I should be relieved. But if they still need Henry for their future business, they are more powerful now, and finding my son wouldn’t be much of a problem for them.” She shivered. “I’m terrified.” She admitted.
Killian looked sympathetically at her, then he opened his arms and she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. “We will protect Henry. Nothing bad will happen to the boy.” He tried to reassure her, and she mentally thanked him for his choice to use the word we.
~·~·~·~
When Emma and Killian went downstairs Henry was immersed in a story. Mary Margaret was putting some things in place on her shelves, which in Killian’s opinion was not at all necessary, as they already seemed in order; he noticed that the boy glanced confused towards the brunette woman but didn't give it too much weight.
David was in the kitchen, browning some vegetables. "You absolutely have to try these," he told his audience, "they don't have all the intense flavor they had on our planet, but, given that they are from a greenhouse, they are not bad at all."
“What was your home planet?” Killian inquired.
“One of the NTH-Confederates.” It was Mary Margaret who answered.
“No way!” Henry had stopped giving attention to his tablet.
“Yes, why? Do you know them?” Was David’s question, while his wife simultaneously asked: "Have you been there?"
“Everybody in the multiverse knows them.” Killian stated. “I traveled a lot, but I never went that far away. Those planets are surrounded by legends and myths.”
“Well, it’s a very tangible and existing myth.” The brunette said with a nostalgic look in her eyes.
“It’s so cool! It has to be a wondrous place.” Henry was as enthusiastic as usual.
“Yeah. Well… I’d like it to be as cool as it used to be.” There was a hint of sadness in David’s voice. Then he shook his head as if he didn't want to indulge in melancholic thoughts. “But, they still have the best fillglow team of the multiverse!”
“What are you talking about?” Killian rhetorically asked.
“Why, The Buttercups, of course!”
“No, no, no.” Killian accentuated it by swinging one finger. “I mean, they are some fine fellows, I won’t argue with that. But The Black Clippers? That’s a team as it ought to be!”
“Oh, come on! The Buttercups have won four major leagues. What did your team win?”
“It’s easy to have the most requested players on the market when you are loaded. My boys, they cut their teeth on the field, they fought to reach where they are. They were not a guaranteed winning team, and look at them now, top end of the MFC table this year. Plus, they play fair.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” David was staring back at the other man, chin raised, one hand on his hip. He might even have looked threatening, were it not for the fact that in his other hand he was brandishing a wooden spoon and wearing an apron that read "the most charming chef in the world".
“Easy guys.” His wife tried to make peace. “Dinner is almost ready, would you like to help set the table?”
They all ate quietly, the boys still talking about sports, but with Mary Margaret's gentle interjection now and then, and some glances at her husband, they didn’t argue much. Emma, instead, was delighted, looking at Killian talking about his favorite team as if he was defending his honor.
When they finished eating, the brunette stood up and said to her husband “David, you should go and do your patrol, while I check at the hospital if they need anything.” Something that Killian had already listened to the previous day, as well just after dinner.
Henry looked at the woman frowning. “Why do you always repeat the same actions, day after day?” He was perplexed.
Killian hummed as if he had the clues to the boy’s puzzle “This is a stuck-track planet, my lad.” he explained to a confused Henry. “I’ve been on some of them when I was young.”
“You say it as if you were an old fellow.” Emma snorted. “What are you, a million years old?”
“It’s more like two hundred.” Was his reply.
And to her surprise, she didn’t detect any hint of a lie. “Are you kidding me?”
Killian was about to reply, but Henry interrupted their banter “What’s a stuck-track planet?”
“It means that time runs differently here.” The man explained. “The days or even weeks we spend on this planet are probably just a couple of minutes back home.”
The boy seemed fascinated by the idea. “Wow! Now I understand why my watch gives almost the same hour, it's not broken, it just moves really slow!”
“Exactly. And it affects people, too.” Killian went on. “They don’t age, or at least not in the way you do on Althea-Seals.” Then he drew near Emma, whispering so that only she could hear him “Stuck-track planets may have given me experience, but as you can see I’ve retained my youthful glow.” He winked at her, who just rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress a smile.
“This is why the days all look the same here.” Henry deduced, who was giving further thought to the subject.
“This is why we follow routines so strictly.” Mary Margaret chimed in. “It helps count the passing of time.”
“Does that mean that you and David aren’t the age you appear, either?” Emma questioned.
The other woman thought about it. “Add twenty years, give or take. But it’s hard to say exactly.”
The married couple excused themselves while heading out of the loft to carry out their duties. Killian and Emma started to put away the remains of the dinner. Henry was probably still eager to know as much as possible about this strange planet and its slow time, but when he stood up with his dirt plate in his hands he couldn’t suppress a yawn. His mother insisted on him going to bed.
~·~·~·~
“Where do those flying rocks around the planet come from?” Killian asked David after he had come back from his patrol.
Henry was already sleeping upstairs, and the three of them were sitting around the table.
“Ahm, it’s not so easy to explain.” The blond man answered.
“Give it a try.” Killian wanted to understand how Vernal-Den worked.
David shook his head. “It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, more than I don’t actually know about it.” He made a pause trying to find better words to explain his point of view. “I would say it’s remotely directed.”
“From where?” Emma asked curiously.
“We don’t know.” This time was Mary Margaret’s turn to answer, who had just entered the loft, back from the hospital, and joined the other adults at the table.
“But I assure you, there’s none else on this planet, apart from the people we know about. And I trust all of them.” David had the urge to defend his friends.
“A couple of people we knew had tried to go outside to search for other forms of life, enemies, whatever... to understand who or what supervises this planet’s activities.” Mary Margaret sighed. “Let’s just say it didn’t end well.”
“But there should be someone else on this planet, defending it.” Killian didn’t comprehend.
“There’s nobody else living here, apart from the people we already know.”
“How can you be so sure?” Emma asked.
“Nobody else uses the greenhouse and its products.” David explained. “Nobody else wastes the energy generated by the planet. It’s just us.”
“But it’s clear that someone really wants to protect this planet from intruders, therefore the rocks. For what purpose?” Killian’s attempt to solve this puzzle only created more questions and doubts.
“Well, the greenhouse could supply oxygen and food for an entire population. I think that someone is interested in keeping this planet as a possible lifeline.”
“A lifeline.” The dark man wondered about it. “Who’s behind this?”
“My theory is just as good as yours.” The blond man shook his head again.
“But you do have a theory.”
“Who’s playing with planets as pawns for his own benefits?” David grimaced.
“You think the Industry is behind this?” Emma almost whispered, as if she was worried that the Industry itself could hear her. She shivered, and Killian put his hand on hers resting on her knee under the table. He was willing to tell her that everything was going to be ok, but he didn’t want to generate indiscreet questions from his hosts.
David shrugged. “Any other ideas?”
“I don’t know. We haven't lived here for a long time. You tell me.” Killian teased.
David looked straight at his guests. “We did some research, with the limited resources we have here, but I assure you it’s nothing we had seen before. What generates all the power needed to maintain the greenhouse and the system that propels the rocks outside the atmosphere … it’s not material, if you understand what I mean.”
Killian passed his bionic hand over his stubble thoughtfully. “Not material.” He repeated. “Antiparticles? But that’s preposterous! A fantasy! You can’t create energy from nothing.”
“Yeah. You would say so. But there’s no other explanation. It’s a power so strong that can create an entirely new world…” David made a pause, and then: “or destroy one.”
“Antiparticles,” Killian repeated, while all his theories were starting to fit in. “So that’s how that vile crocodile annihilates the planets he doesn't need anymore.”
The blond man nodded. “After looting everything the planet has to offer, the Industry injects some of those antiparticles underground. And they disintegrate every last molecular bond and electric impulse until the planet itself implodes.”
“Is that what happened to your planet?” Emma asked Killian even if she didn’t need an actual answer, and then she turned to the couple “Yours as well?”
“We’re not sure about that,” David answered. “From the sources we have, it appears that the NTH-Confederates planets are still alive and kicking, all of them. I think Mr. Gold has other intentions, some obscure interest in them. But I don’t know what it is.”
“Do you miss it? Your home.” Emma inquired. She didn’t miss hers. Life on New-Tolemac when she was a child had not been that bad, she couldn’t complain. But the lack of freedom and the memories of the last events there had left a sour taste and no desire of going back ever.
“Yes. We do.” There was sadness in David’s voice. “Most of the time. But we know that returning there doesn’t necessarily mean that we could go back to our lives. Many things have changed. And I’m not sure I’d like to see how our planet has become.”
“We had to make some difficult decisions before leaving our home. But it was for the best of all.” Mary Margaret sobbed. “It was a long time ago, but it still hurts like the first day.” David put his hand on hers, smiling faintly, trying to give her courage.
“What happened? If it’s not too much to ask.” Killian softly asked.
“We were under attack,” David explained. “We tried to defend ourselves, but the Industry’s power is difficult to overcome. We realized that the only way for us to survive was to abandon our land…”
Mary Margaret stepped in, “We believed that it was the end, that we wouldn’t be able to escape alive.” She sighed loudly “I had just had a baby, and we knew that taking her with us was too risky, it would have been her death sentence.”
“So we contacted a woman who promised us that our daughter would be taken care of, she knew that the King and Queen of a faraway planet were searching for an heir.” David went on telling the story, but his voice wasn’t as steady as he tried to make it. He was still affected by the sad memory as well as his wife. “We wrapped her in a white blanket with a purple ribbon and we gave her the best chance to be the princess she could have never been with us.”
“So you decided to sell her!” Emma shouted.
“What?” - “No!” David and Mary Margaret reacted simultaneously, shaking their heads in bewilderment.
“We never said anything about money.” David pointed out.
“We could have never done anything like that to our child.” Mary Margaret seemed shocked by her guest’s assumption and even a bit outraged.
Emma looked at them with an open mouth, but no sound came out. Then she abruptly stood up and rushed out of the house.
The married couple exchanged a questioning look. “Did I say something wrong?” Mary Margaret asked worriedly.
Killian shook his head. “I should apologize for her behavior. This is a sensitive matter for her. If you would excuse me.” He said standing up and heading to the door.
~·~·~·~
“Are you alright, love?” Killian found Emma sitting on the corridor floor, with her arms around her legs and her face buried in her knees.
He waited for a reply, but it didn’t come. So he sat down next to her. She was crying, her back shuddering.
“Swan…” he tried, but then... “Emma, talk to me.”
She raised her face to look straight at him. Tears rolling down her cheeks. “I have a white blanket with a purple ribbon from when I was a baby! I always had it!” And there was pain in her eyes, but also anger.
It was his time to keep silent. He didn’t know how to react to this new piece of information.
“It’s them!” She exclaimed between sobs. “Those people inside the house are my parents! How am I supposed to look at their faces?”
An immeasurable feeling of protection spread within Killian, but he had to swallow his urge to hug her as if their lives depended on it, because it wasn’t the right time. She was struggling against enough demons, he could not burden her with further emotional matters. “Well, love, if it were me finally finding my parents, I would be very pleased to spend as much time as possible with them, to get the chance to know them and understand who they really are.”
“They sold me! They didn’t want me!” Emma looked at him as if he were an alien. How he could not understand her point of view was beyond her comprehension.
But Killian did understand her, given that he had been sold as a child as well, he knew the feeling, he just didn’t think this was the same case he had lived through. “That’s not what they said in there. They were trying to protect their baby, to give her her best chance to live a life they couldn’t afford for her. And they didn’t seem happy about that decision. I saw regret and what-ifs in their eyes.”
He knew she too noticed the pain in David and Mary Margaret's strangled voices, but he also knew she wasn't ready to admit it. “They are lying.” She hissed.
“Are you sure about that? Henry once told me you have this superpower, that you can detect a lie when you hear it. I had the impression they were being honest while telling their story.”
“But I saw the contract!” She was grasping at straws.
Killian had to take her to a more practical level, something tangible that she could hold on to if she wanted to. “Aye, you saw it. And who exactly signed it?”
“I…” Emma tried to recall a ten-year-old memory, but it wasn’t easy. After all, she had been in shock when she had discovered she wasn't the real daughter of the King and Queen of New-Tolemac. “I don’t know… I mean, I’m pretty sure there were my adoptive parents’ names in the paper, but…”
And that was when Killian realized that he had bought her some time, at least. “So you are not completely sure that they are your parents.”
He saw how her shoulders hunched as she was looking at him with watering pleading eyes and he understood that part of her was yelling to run away from pain and old scars, but another part was whispering that maybe she could finally find that love that only parents can give and that she had never felt in her life.
“You know what? We’re going to go back, and we’re going to spend a few more days with those people. We could even ask them if they would like to come with us on our journey back.”
“But..” She started.
Killian stopped her with the raise of one finger. “If it turns out that they really are your parents, well, you’ll have more time to understand why they decided to abandon you when you were just a baby. And only after that, we’ll choose if we hate them or not. Sounds fair?”
She didn’t move for a few minutes, dwelling on his words, but then she put a hand on his bionic one, and even if she knew he couldn’t feel it, she squeezed it with gratitude. Thank you for bearing this weight with me. She would have liked to say the words, but they didn’t come. She didn’t have the strength to analyze why he was doing this for her. Too many feelings for one night, to face new and unfamiliar ones. “Okay.” was what she finally said.
Star Vs Tom Luictor Retrospective Detour: Skooled!
Dedicated to Jessica Walter 1941- 2021
Welcome back all you still mourning people to Prince of Wishful Thinking, my Tom Lucitor Retrospective... or at least a detour from it as I need to cover the Meteora arc to cover Divide/Conquer properly. When we last left off with Star she and Tom were going closer, but both are taking a break this time. We’ll get back to them in April... oh will we get back to them in april. For now we’re back to Meteora who I forgot was ABSENT for a while. not forever, but while her parantege, the cover up related to her and all of that has been vitally important, Meteora herself vanished after Monster Party and hasn’t been seen till now. But i’ts a good storytelling engine.. it ratchets up tension for her inevitable return, and gives us time to find out what happened with her and let that sink in.. granted i’td also be the last time it sunk in but I can dunk on the series decline later... I still have season 4 episodes to cover after all. So join me under the cut as we get the welcomed Return of Henious, an unexpected hero.. and Ponyhead because this series clearly hasn’t hurt me enough. And as usual for my Star Vs Reviews, i’d like to thank one of my Best Friends @jess-the-vampire for her insight on this episode. It’s always welcome and she always manages to find something I didn’t think of .
So we open at Saint O’s with Ponyhead returning to the school, having previously run it post rebellion before leaving because.. I don’t know. She probably got tired of being a leader, and out of universe they needed her to be around star more. Look the series has far more important things it never explained and never will, not explaining why a recklessly irresponsible asshole left a position of authority and responsibility I can let slide.
She’s come for brunch but things have changed... the school is still a warm, free environment for princesses to better themselves and party hardy, no longer an oppressive brainwashing gulag run by someone who as it turned out was horribly brainwashed herself.. it’s just now it actually has rules and structure.
It now also has an actual leader, Princess Patty Arms who showed up in the school’s previous appearance this season here and.. that’s it. I think she showed up in the background of the original st o’s episode. And it’s a shame because she’s a really fascinating character. No really she’s calm, dosen’t take Pony’s shit, and while a brunch exam SEEMS like a waste of time... it really isn’t. A good meal can loosen up a dignitary and some rulers have sticks up their keisters about things like this, so being able to do it just right can win them over. It’s still a touch ridiculous but given the world of star is a touch ridiculous to start with, it works.
Pony naturally leaves in a rage over this especially when no one backs her up.. but soon the School has bigger issues and we get to why we’re actually here: Meteora is back. And while she has changed, now having grown larger and stronger, easily scaling the wall, she still wants payback and we get a damn fine battle sequence as the princesses all unite against their former tormentor. It’s also sad in hindsight.. because as Jess pointed out to me almost NONE of these characters show up again. And I only added the almost because Penelope is in there. They all seem interesting, the setting of ST O’s itself is interesting, and the idea of a school for princesses of various types is a cool idea. I’ts something the show could’ve come back to to see how they bounce back from this attack.. but like most cool background elements in the show they forget about it. It was intresting to see the schools slow evolution from horrible nightmare to princess ran utopia and like many things coming up it feels like a lost opportunity.
That being said the fight is awesome, with Meteora proving to be a juggernaut in strength and outplanning her enimies, having brought an overide switch for the robots (Patty reprogrammed them to work for the school) and having them throw their hearts/ power sources as bombs. It’s a damn fine sequence as she finds way after way to keep going, with a now restored rasticore helping them simply portal in.
Pony meanwhile.. is hiding , as Patty find sout when she finds her, and Pony assumes this is about her... though for once i’ts not JUST ego.. but because she was one of the two who started the uprising at the school in the first place and THE person who tossed her out. We also get a nice character moment as while Pony tells patti she still hates her.. she puts the princess behind her when Meteora approaches. She may be a selfish twit whose massively unlikeable.. but she has a good heart.. and not just the one she keeps in a jar she got from one of her boyfriends.
But Meteora has more important buisness and finds her way to the depths of St. O’s.. where we meet the Schools namesake and her adopted mother a robot played by tress macneile.. another thing the series never bothered to care about as where did these robots come from and why?
Turns out Meteora came to find out her own personal history, with the remote from before used to find the real dirt.. and what we find .. is heartbreaking as we slowly journey back through Meteora’s childhoods as Henious.. and it’s fucking heart breaking with Tress voicing her younger versions, hence why I didn’t use this as the jessica tribute as while walter’s good in the episode, she isn’t given much.
We see her as a teen, forced to hide her tail and insulted over it by her mother.. and it only gets worse as when her cheeks glow as a kid St. O tries to wash them off and we get the poor child desperately begging that “she can be better”
We do finally get the answers Meteora saught as we see Shastacan dropping off the baby meteora, calling her “Henious”.. which St. O took as her name. Proving the spiderbites minus penelope’s dickishness is indeed genetic and why I have no sympathy for the prick getting eaten later... and hopefully globgor will do an encor with penepople’s parents. Here’s hoping.
So Meteora now knows she’s the rightful queen, and decides to go take it back.. though Pony does try to stand up for her friends... and while we don’t see it hte next episode confirms she got her horn ripped the fuck off. And this horribly traumatic injury.. is magically fixed via 3d printing next time we see her after an episode grappling iwth it instead of having pony deal with not having a horn, or her prostetic not giving her magic powers again. Because this show again really likes to leave good ideas out to rot in the sun like that package of hamburger I left out in the sun yesterday. And I actually had a reason there: I need a lot of Racoons for an elaborate scheme involving a map to tex cruz’s house, a used apache helicopter and a bulk order of tiny parachutes.
We do get some payoff to things though, as Henious comes on to rasticore who not so politely rejects her for being nuts.. before it’s revealed Gemini, her loyal servant is also a robot and she uses his heart to blow up rasticore and take the arm with her... which is ALSO never brought up again. Seriously this episode is so full of loose ends i’m suprised it just dosen’t end with Zuko asking his dad about his mother. Gemini’s death is genuinely tragic as his last words are “If you wanted my heart.. all you had to do.. was assssskkkkk”. God damn. So with that Meteora heads out to reclaim her birthright.. no matter the cost.
Final Thoughts on Skooled!: This one is decent.. but like the last episode I covered, the lack of payoff off for almost anything here, excluding the Meteora plotline and the Pony thing which instead got a BAD payoff, is really starting to rear it’s ugly head as the series greatest weakness. Yes bigger than the romance plot. And given that romance plot after this season can be best discribed as...
youtube
The show just.. forgets a good chunk of things happened to keeep things chugging along. It sets UP plots, what happens to st o’s from here, buff frog and a small caravan of monsters leaving forever, the message from shastacan, who built the st o’s robots, and on and on.. but it never PAYS them off. It dosen’t care to. It just does things so the plot can move but never bothers to think about the fucking consequences. It just gets more and more irrtating to think about as other shows throughly DO: Amphibia has the fact the characters get into shenanigans become a commented on running gag and something they grow past, and everything that happens matters. Every episode of Owl House builds on the foundation of the previous episodes. OK Ko dosen’t forget one episode had the characters not be able to turn back into humans and implies their wearing human costumes for the rest of the series. Which is fucking weird, but it was their memory. My point is other shows around the same time or right after didn’t magically forget things happened for convience sake. While it’s OKAY to loose some things in the shuffle, it happens to the best of us, it’s not okay to do it SO fucking often and with no clear care for the audiences desire for payoff. The show just ignores what plot points, like the huge cliffhanger of Star telling marco how she felt at the end of season 2, it dosen’t care about till it needs them and ignores the ones it never does. You can’t just.. bring shit up like it’s important and then try and forget it ever happened. People remember stuff, we are NOT stupid. KIDS are not stupid. When I was younger I REMEMBERED things that happened on KND, Danny Phantom, Xiaolin Showdown, TMNT 2003, because those shows, which are from decades ago, knew I would and trusted even if I missed something and was thrown off i’d tune in for the quality.
And in an age of streaming and more story based tv you can’t just.. ask kids to act like something they saw didn’t happen because your fucking lazy and frankly YOU never should have. Kids deserve better, my niblings deserve better and frankly the adults your clearly also writing for.. deserve better. This episode is eh, but the problems it represents are so fucking worse.
Next time on tom. If you thought I got angry towards the end of this one, just you wait. Next time i’ts Booth Buddies. Yeah.. yeah that one. Stay tuned.
Gem Glow: Part 1
Welcome! Well, this isn’t really made to entertain. I’m just doing this to recover from trauma and get a good grasp of the show’s lore while having my girls react with me. Feel free to tag along.
We’ll be watching four episodes a day and react only to the major events as tackling all of them is a toughie.
Sharpie: “I want to see real tears, Wilt.”
Wilt: “Tears? At the very first episode?”
Sharpie: “Yes. Otherwise I’ll make you cry by some other means.”
Wilt: “I have these tear marks. Those count, yes?”
Sharpie: “Real tears, I said.”
Wilt: “Ahh, how iconic.”
Spinel: “The area around the lighthouse is lacking a lot of flowers. That’ll change someday!”
Sharpie: “Yes, after a lot of blood, ink and tears had been shed first.”
Spinel: “Here we have a shot of the show’s hero, lamenting the discontinuation of a certain ice cream snack brand.”
Sharpie: “Is this triggering your PTSD yet?”
Wilt: “Not really. I thought it would but surprisingly I’m still okay.”
Lars: “Well, if you miss your wimpy ice cream so much, why don’t you make some with your MAGIC BELLY BUTTON?”
Spinel: “Hey Sharpie, let’s make foodstuff with just the energy in our gem.”
Sharpie: “And you still owe me 86 years’ worth of happiness.”
Wilt: “What is this civil conversation you’re having? That’s not how I wrote you two.”
Sadie: “Uhh Steven? Do you want to take the freezer with you?”
Spinel: “Think what would’ve happened if Sadie didn’t let him take that freezer home.”
Sharpie: “Does… does the cat’s face looked different to you?”
Spinel: “I love the lighthouse. The view up the top is always so breathtaking.”
Sharpie: “I’m not so happy with our roommate though.”
Wilt: “…I might have to draw this someday.”
Spinel: “Don’t you just love it when your pets greet you as you enter your house? I wish you would greet me whenever I fall asleep.”
Sharpie: “You’re just my nightmare.”
Amethyst: “’Sup, Steven.”
Spinel: “AME!!!!”
Spinel: “I AM IN LOVE.”
Sharpie: “You can stop replaying this 5 seconds worth of Pearl now.”
Spinel: “It’s 4 seconds worth of Pearl, you heathen.”
Spinel: “HOOO MAMA. Remember when Garnet kicked our ass?”
Sharpie: “She kicked your ass. She kicked your ass so much I had to start a switch to intervene. Now that I think of it, I shouldn’t have done that.”
Sharpie: “Being sliced open is one thing. Being pulled apart is another.”
Spinel: “It’s good that we’re stretchy.”
Sharpie: “I can disable that function and tear you apart like that, actually. Ever wondered why it doesn’t hurt when others pull at you like taffy but I can?”
Spinel: “I can do the same and prevent you from escaping my hugs.”
Sharpie: “*sigh*… I hate you.”
Spinel: “Ahaha! Pearl is so cute!”
Sharpie: “Ahaha! I love this technique.”
Wilt: “It’s good for breaking a hole through walls in maximum security prisons, yeah.”
Amethyst: “Uhh you guys, these things don’t have gems.”
Garnet: “That means there must be a mother somewhere nearby.”
Sharpie: “That’s a fascinating thought.”
Wilt: “It’s similar to how Pearl can project figures that can maintain itself while independent of the source. In this case, the main centipeedle can project independent but smaller versions of itself.”
Sharpie: “How come 2nd Projections aren’t like that, I wonder. Like we can’t have separate bodies or anything…”
Wilt: “Probably because the 2nd Projection has a personality of its own and it stems from the original gem, while Pearl Projections and mini-centipeedles are pre-programmed projections that would act accordingly to the original’s commands. Like, if Spinel makes a projection separate from her, it wouldn’t be you.”
Sharpie: “Fair enough.”
Spinel: “Speaking of Pearl Projections…”
Sharpie: “No.”
Pearl: “Steven, until you learned to control the powers in your gem, we’ll take care of protecting humanity. Okay?”
Spinel: “I want Pearl to snap my neck like that.”
Sharpie: “As if impaling you wasn’t enough.”
Spinel: “PFFFTT-“
Amethyst: “We went out and stole a bunch!”
Spinel: “That’s my Ame.”
Pearl: “I went back and paid for that.”
Sharpie: “That’s…. that’s very Pearl of her.”
Steven: “He left his family behind!”
Spinel: “AHAHAHAHAHA”
Sharpie: “What’s so funny about that?”
Sharpie: “Oh my stars. I hope we don’t have to bear another one of those.”
Wilt: “It’s catchy. I like it.”
Sharpie: “What a happy little family. It’s a shame that they’re doomed to a life of madness onwards.”
Amethyst: “Quick! Try and summon your weapon!”
“Awww, no weapon.”
Wilt: “He’s struggling. A sign of a well-rounded character. The progress is dramatic if we compare this episode to the last ones. And it only took him a few Earth years.”
Sharpie: “And it took us like what, 86 years to get this far and we’re still inferior to most we meet in our travels.”
Spinel: “God I love Pearl.”
Sharpie: “Can you even pay attention to anything that isn’t Pearl?”
Spinel: “I’m capable of paying attention to a lot of things and to nothing at the same time, Sharpie. Be amazed.”
Steven: “Can one of you just explain how to summon a weapon?”
Pearl: “Oh! I’ll go first.”
Wilt: “I love Pearl.”
Spinel: “I love Pearl.”
Sharpie: “…”
Spinel: “AUUGH! Pearl is so beautiful.”
Wilt: “This is so anime.”
Spinel: “This scene makes me wanna stand underneath a cherry blossom tree with her in a Friday afternoon and confess my love.”
Sharpie: “God both of you disgust me.”
Pearl: “Pay attention to these petals, Steven.”
Pearl: “The petal’s dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real-time based on the physical properties of this planet.”
Wilt: “HELL YEAH, I LOVE PEARL.”
Pearl: “With hard work and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gem, and perform your own dance.”
Pearl: “Like so.”
Spinel: “HELL YEAH, I LOVE PEARL”
Sharpie: “So… Pearl’s approach is tuning into the technical reality of the universe to tap into her gem’s energy,”
Amethyst: “Listen Steven. All that practice stuff is no fun. Whenever I need to summon my weapon, it just happens.”
Sharpie: “And Amethyst’s approach is just winging it. Considering Ame is a gem made for war, of course summoning a weapon is natural instinct. Pearl however… She had to learn serious fighting, something most Pearls aren’t made for.”
Spinel: “We’re the same, ain’t we? Spinels ain’t made for violence but we can whoop butt just fine.”
Sharpie: “We just got lucky… and incredibly unfortunate at the same time.”
Sharpie: “Gems are such nuisances. So much that in other places of the world, a group of humans actually built little Distortion Bombs capable of disorienting corrupted gems to a point of repelling them away. Unfortunately those things are powered by tiny bits of gem shards, which is obviously not an easily obtainable source of power. The project was discontinued.”
Spinel: “The invention worked on us, too, which is kind of impressive!”
Sharpie: “The best those little bombs done to us were to irritate us, or temporarily disable our senses. Corrupted gems have warped sentience I think, so they would rely more on instincts and run away from the source of irritation as much as possible.”
Sharpie: “They say if enough energy is given into the device, it’ll have high enough amplitude to potentially dissipate a gem’s physical form. But this is just a fever dream. There’s no way they have access to that amount of energy without slaughtering a Diamond first. Still, props to the engineer who thought that was a good idea.”
Spinel: “So instead of using gem shards, he decided to use us by writing the function into Springy. If we poof, we can give bad gems nearby a head ache and make them go away. We can protect people even if we die in battle! He basically turned us into heroic suicide bombers against corrupted gems.”
Sharpie: “Necessary, considering every time we poof we somehow cause part of a building to catch on fire, killing the people we’re supposed to protect in the process.”
Spinel: “Uh huh… yeaaahh….. I mean, where else is the excess energy supposed to go?”
Sharpie: “I dunno. Some other harmless form of energy apart from heat? The sparkly dust clouds were already perfect and you just had to change it into something deadlier. Thanks to you, seven people that stood close to us turned into soup.”
Spinel: “Well, there was that one time where the fire storm actually saved us from a meanie who wanted to crush us. We can’t just ignore that.”
Sharpie: “Seven people died, Spinel. Seven people that happened to be our allies.”
Wilt: “Please stop. We have to finish this episode.”
Steven: “So I’m supposed to work really hard and not try at all at the same time?”
Garnet: “Yes.”
Garnet: “Or…”
Garnet: “You can link your mind with the energy of all existing matter, channeling the collective power of the universe through your gem.”
Garnet: “At least that’s my way of doing it.
Spinel: “C’mon, kiddo. It’s not that hard to understand. It’s how Springy lived for the past 40 years. If she can do it, so can you.”
Sharpie: “I bet this makes the most sense to you, huh Wilt?”
Wilt: “It does. Considering we are all just ripples of energy on the surface of the large lasagna we call the observable universe.”
Sharpie: “What a nerd. Also we’re half-way through the episode. You better cry, Wilt.”
Wilt: “I’m saving this shot for reference.”
A stowaway!
-
In the morning they rose bright and early. There’d been a bit more rain overnight, but it had stopped and the sky had cleared, and everything was fresh and sparkling with dew. They packed up, and then Jason proudly showed Peggy the equipment he’d been working on.
“I got the gyros and dampeners worked out, I think,” he said, “so unless we’ve got major turbulence it ought to stay pretty level underneath the aircraft. The readout will be here.”
In the middle of the plane was a device that resembled a polygraph, though without the parts to connect it to the person under interrogation. Instead, the wires passed through a hole in the floor to the sonar mounted beneath the belly of the aircraft. Three pens were ready to trace out lines on the roll of paper.
“The blue one will be the top of the ice,” said Jason, “the green will be the bottom, and the black will be the seafloor underneath. Ice, water, and stone all affect the frequency of sounds in different ways, so the timing tells us which is which.”
“What if we encounter something else?” asked Peggy.
“Like metal, or wood?” Jason asked with a smile. “That’ll confuse it. We won’t be able to immediately identify what we’ve found, but we’ll know we’ve found something.”
So they wouldn’t know if it were a crashed plane or a secret Russian base, thought Peggy… but they could do a wide circle and check it out from above. If it were worrying, they could return to civilization and alert Daniel. Peggy knew there was no such thing as a foolproof plan – fools were far too inventive for that – but this one was solid as long as they took no unnecessary risks.
“Well done,” she said. “This should be just what we need.”
“He was wasted at Isodyne,” said Howard. He sat down in the pilot’s seat, leaving the door between cockpit and cargo area open, and zipped up his flying jacket. “Shall we get this show on the road?”
“I’m dying to know what the big secret is,” Jason admitted.
“You may be disappointed,” Peggy warned him.
She and Jason made one last check that their equipment and supplies were secure, and then took their places on the troop benches and did up their safety harnesses. The propellers whirled to life, and the Skytrain took off into a beautiful blue sky.
“All right,” said Peggy once they were at altitude. “I now have things to explain to both of you… and neither of you are likely to be pleased. I’m sorry, Jason, but we’re not looking for the Franklin Expedition, although I suppose we may find it by accident.”
Jason nodded, a little disappointed but not particularly surprised. “You’re looking for the wreck of the Valkyrie,” he said.
“That’s right. Unfortunately, we’re quite unlikely to find it. Our source was not a particularly reliable one.” Peggy paused to arrange the story in her head, but before she could speak, something under Jason’s seat went clunk.
The interior of the plane was open down the middle, so that it could transport vehicles and equipment as well as troops. The men were meant to sit where Peggy and Jason were now, on benches at the sides. Below the benches were lockers, and it was from one of these that the sound had just come. Jason undid his harness and moved to the side as one of the doors banged open, and a human being wiggled out.
“No,” said Peggy out loud, as a head of blonde hair appeared. “Oh, no, no, no.” This was not allowed to happen!
But it was. Miss Lake got up and brushed herself off. She was wearing a knee-length wool wrap coat in black, and as she sat down on the bench next to Jason, she pulled out a matching felt hat from one of the pockets, unfolded it, and put it on her head.
“Hi,” she said to Jason.
“What’s going on back there?” Howard demanded from up front. He could not see them from the cockpit, although he could hear a little of the conversation.
“Turn around, Howard!” Peggy stood up and went to the cockpit door. “Find a place to land, now.”
“I’ve got a bomb,” said Lake.
Peggy turned and looked at her. “Excuse me?”
“I put a bomb on this plane,” Lake repeated. “I have the detonator. If you land somewhere I don’t approve of, or otherwise try to get rid of me, I’ll set it off.”
It was all Peggy could do not to gape at her like a fish. “You’re bluffing,” she said.
“Bet your life?” asked Lake. She glanced at Jason. “Bet his life?”
“Who is that?” Howard wanted to know. He craned his head over his shoulder to try to see through the doorway.
“That is our source,” said Peggy tiredly. “What do you want, Miss Lake?”
“I want to help you find Captain America,” Lake told her, as if this were the most reasonable thing in the world. “When Ned got back from lunch, he told me that you’d said he should apologize to me and promise to be less creepy to women in bars. I knew if you were back in town there had to be a reason, so I hitchhiked out here and found you guys working on the plane. After you went to bed I stowed away, and here I am.”
“How did you know we’d be at Howard’s airfield?” asked Peggy. “How… how did you even know he had an airfield up here?”
“I guessed,” said Lake.
“You guessed he had an airfield?”
“No, that I already knew.”
“How did you escape from the SSR?” Peggy asked. She felt like her head was spinning. She was going to kill Agent Russel, she thought… he hadn’t revealed a single secret and yet he’d still told Lake everything she needed to know. “Don’t tell me Thompson put you in a hotel or something instead of back in your cell…”
“No, no. Thompson is smarter than you think he is, but not nearly as smart as he thinks he is,” Lake assured her. “I tried to seduce him just to see if he’d go for it. He didn’t, but he also didn’t pay enough attention to realize I was doing it to distract him from me putting Barbital in his chicken soup.”
“What is going on?” Howard demanded from the cockpit. “Am I landing or not?”
“No landing!” said Lake cheerfully.
“We’re gonna have to land eventually,” Howard protested. “It’s already in the flight plan! We have to land up by Fort Severn to refuel!”
“Then you’re allowed to do that, but not to kick me off,” said Lake. She got up and went to the cockpit door herself , to take a look at their pilot. “So you’re Howard Stark, are you?”
This was the first time Howard had been able to see their guest. When he realized she was an attractive blonde, he sat up a little straighter and gave her a charming smile, much to Peggy’s disgust. “My reputation precedes me?” he asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Lake. “Marie said you fell asleep right after and left her high and dry. Ksenia said you have the ugliest, wrinkliest testicles she has ever seen on a man, and Olga… not Barynova, the other Olga… said that in the middle of things you kept calling her ‘Steve’.”
Peggy raised an eyebrow.
“That is not true,” said Howard, and added, to Peggy, “I don’t remember any of those women.”
“I didn’t expect you to,” Peggy said. “Howard, Jason, this is Miss Katherine Lake, which is the only name she’ll tell us.”
“Now, that is not true,” Lake said. “When I first met you I told you my name was Nadine Russel.”
“Yes, but you stole that one from somebody else,” said Peggy. “Miss Lake is another Soviet agent, like Dottie Underwood but far, far worse. Dottie is merely a madwoman, but Miss Lake has a plan.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere,” Lake said, and went to sit down again.
Peggy remained standing by the door so that Howard would hear what she had to say. “At any rate, I’m afraid Miss Lake is correct – she was our source. She dropped the coordinates off in a letter she slipped into my purse while she was impersonating an FBI agent. Daniel and I discussed it and decided we had to at least take a look, if only to make sure the Soviets have not found the crash site before we did. Miss Lake is supposed to be in New York, helping Chief Thompson find Dottie Underwood.”
“He’ll be fine,” Lake assured her. “He’ll have her the moment she tries to sell Vivien Leigh’s diamond bracelet.”
“The one I gave her?” Howard asked.
“Dottie wouldn’t steal that,” said Peggy. “She’s got one of her own already.”
With all the bad news delivered, Peggy sat heavily back down in her seat and folded her arms across her chest. In the space of moments, her solid plan had turned into a circus. She was now quite certain they would find something up on Cornwallis Island, but it wasn’t going to be the Valkyrie… and whatever it was, Peggy wasn’t going to like it very much.
-
They landed in Fort Severn as planned. The weather there was dreadful, with a silvery overcast sky that hurt to look at, and tiny sharp crystals of snow swirling down to bite into any exposed skin. Jason stayed on board to check the equipment one more time, while Howard gritted his teeth, tied his scarf tight, and headed out into the cold to arrange for their refueling. Miss Lake seemed happy enough just to sit in the plane and wait, so Peggy announced a desire to stretch her legs and headed out for a walk.
The wind was bitter, which gave her a perfect excuse to confine her walk to no more than a dozen feet from the Skytrain. She circled the plane twice, examining the engines, the landing gear, and even Jason’s sonar – anywhere somebody could have inserted something that did not belong. She found nothing. Peggy didn’t know as much about planes as Howard did but she knew plenty about bombs, and she was confident that if it were in one of those places, she would have spotted it.
“That was a short walk,” Miss Lake said, when Peggy came back inside.
“It’s colder out there than I thought,” Peggy replied.
She stepped over Jason’s tools and headed up into the cockpit, where she took another look around. Under the seats? Behind them? In the floor, where there was a hatch to access the landing gear? Behind the instrument panels?
“Find anything?” asked Lake.
Peggy was sitting on the floor examining the underside of the dashboard. She looked up to find Lake in the doorway, looking casually interested. As if this were anything but a life-or-death situation that she had herself put them in.
“What do you want?” Peggy demanded crossly, only to change her mind a moment later and shake her head. “Actually, forget I asked… I know you won’t give me an answer.”
“I want you to trust me,” Lake replied.
Peggy took a moment to consider that. “You want me to trust you, so that’s why you lied to me, sprayed me in the face with a kitchen spice, and are now threatening to blow up an airplane while I’m on board?”
“We were raised to be spies and assassins.” Lake shrugged. “They never taught us how to make friends.”
“I’m not laughing,” said Peggy.
“I’m not joking.” Lake offered Peggy a hand to help her up. “When we find Steve, I’m going to need you to trust me.”
Peggy had been reaching for the hand, but hearing that, she grabbed the arm of the pilot’s seat instead. “You may use my name, Kay,” she said as she got to her feet. “You may not use his.”
When Howard got back on board, the first thing he said was, “did you find it?”
Peggy shook her head. Jason did likewise.
“What do you want to do?” Howard asked.
“I think the only thing Miss Lake will allow us to do is go on,” Peggy said.
“Kind of a long walk home, otherwise,” said Lake with a nod.
“May Jason leave?” Peggy asked. “It would be an expression of your good intentions, to let one of your hostages go.” Jason had been traumatized enough by his previous involvement in SSR affairs. He didn’t deserve to get mixed up in such a mess a second time.
But it was Jason himself who refused. “I have to stay to mind the sonar,” he said. “Howard can’t do that while he’s flying the plane, and you ladies don’t know how to fix it if it breaks.”
“All right,” said Peggy. “Then we go on.” She wondered what she was going to tell Thompson when they brought Miss Lake back to New York, or whether they’d even have the opportunity to.
Bark at the Moon, Chapter 2: Reconnections, Recollections
<Previous / Next>
Or read on my Ao3>
Rating, Setting: Gen, Pre-canon
Chapter Warnings: None
Chapter Summary: Sans is at a loss for what to do. He's lucky his brother isn't the only one who looks out for him, and that he's not the only one looking out for Papyrus... But they both have a lot of work ahead of them.
It had been two weeks. Two long, empty, lonely weeks. Sans hadn’t given up on his brother, per se, but he had given up on looking for him. A check on the numbers revealed nothing out of the ordinary; as far as he could tell, Papyrus was definitely still alive, and there was nothing funky with the timeline. More mundane sources of information continued to come up dry, and the few times Sans had gone out, there was a subtle unease in town. If only Papyrus knew his neighbors missed him... not to mention his own brother. It was like he'd vanished into thin air, and Sans knew that was one thing his brother couldn't do. So he was just... gone.
Sans was starting to feel he'd messed up somehow. He knew he was far from being a perfect or even a really good brother, but he didn’t think he’d done anything to make Papyrus feel running away was necessary…. No, Papyrus would have aired his grievances long before that, he was sure.... But then again, would he? It's not like Sans ever did anything about all the things he nagged him for. Maybe after feeling unheard for so long, he'd left. A cruel voice in his mind liked to whisper as much and worse, and without Papyrus to motivate him, he wasn't doing much to combat it.
He rolled over on the couch and ignored the empty chip bag that crinkled under him, the remains of lunch. Going to Grillby’s had become too taxing sometime last week, and most other foods were similarly inconvenient if they sounded good at all. He wanted nothing more than for Papyrus to burst in and scold him for being so lazy, but dreams of exactly that and the knowledge none of this mattered anyway had spoiled his hopes. He’d just wait, like he always did. He heaved a sigh, and was letting his eyelids drift down when a knock on his door startled him.
He waited, and it came again--much harder.
“Sans?” Undyne called, her voice only slightly muffled by the door. “Sans, you better be in there. I'm gonna bust this down if you don't answer now!”
Oh boy. He hauled himself up, brushed off the worst of the crumbs, and answered the door. Undyne grimaced as she studied him.
“Oh thank god, but dude, you look awful. I was here to see if you were okay, but, I think I just got my answer. C’mon, you’re not staying inside anymore.”
“eh, i’m not really feeling up to going out,” Sans mumbled, wondering if he looked as tired as he felt. “was kinda hoping you had info on my bro, to be honest, but…”
“Sans, no one’s seen you in three weeks,” Undyne stated.
Sans looked up at her with brows furrowed, questioning.
“i was just at grillby’s like… five days ago,” he protested, but Undyne shook her head.
“Grillby himself called me in on a wellness check. It’s been three. Weeks. Two since Papyrus… disappeared. I… guess you lost track of time, huh?”
Sans wilted--he was missing a whole week. “… it really flies when you’re having fun. sorry you went through all this trouble. tell grillby…. i dunno. tell him i’m ok, i guess.”
“You’re not okay,” Undyne growled, snatching the shoulder of his hoodie. “What if Papyrus came home to find you like this? Or—or worse!? Come on! We’re getting you cleaned up, making you eat some real food, and then we’re going out to look for Papyrus because if this keeps going we’ll lose BOTH of you.”
Sans didn’t have it in him to protest. She... she was right. He let her strongarm him into his own house and into the shower—though she gave him his privacy once she’d turned the water on, and the warmth felt so nice he considered staying in for a few days. But that would mean missing out on food he probably wouldn't be paying for, and he was actually hungry now. He washed up and put on the change of clothes Undyne had left him, and when he did finally emerge he found she’d thrown most of the trash away and there was an open spot on the couch. It was fated to remain empty though as she hooked her arm around his shoulders and marched him out the door.
Grillby’s exploded in shock when the two walked in, and they were swarmed by the regulars trying to greet them. Undyne howled, ordering everyone to give Sans some space, and they were finally able to make their way to the bar. If Sans was honest, part of him didn’t really want to be here, but more of him could admit he’d missed it. His friends were quick to fill him in on the latest gossip and jokes, and he realized they were doing for him what he'd done for them so many times before. They were trying to cheer him up.
After enjoying good company and a meal Grillby had assured him was on the house, at Undyne's urging they headed out to begin the search anew. Sans dreaded reaching the tile puzzle now, knowing it was the last place with any evidence of his brother and yet be such a glaring dead end. He sighed, and nudged some of the freshly accumulated snow with his slipper as Undyne talked on her phone behind him.
“Wait a minute, I’ll ask. Hey Sans,” she spoke, tapping his shoulder. “You remember what day it was that all this started?”
“yeah. it was… tuesday, exactly two—well, three weeks ago,” he answered.
“Thanks! Okay, um… as far as I know, he starts at 6 AM, sharp. Yeah. It would’ve taken him a little while to… okay, gotcha. I’ll hang on.”
There was a long pause. Sans wondered if he really could fall asleep standing up. Odds were looking pretty good. He let his eyelids slip down...
“So… you do see something? Uh-huh… that’s too bad about the lens, but you can confirm there was movement here during our timeframe? Awesome. Well, not awesome, but, you know. Thanks Alphys, you’re the best. Talk to you later.”
“well?”
“Dr. Alphys set up these cameras all over to watch for humans, and as it happens, they caught Papyrus walking over here, but not getting any farther than that. Thanks to that snowstorm, this area’s camera got iced over--of course--but she could see enough to make out… something,” Undyne explained. “Hold on, she’s gonna text me a couple pictures.”
There was a ping, and she studied the images with a frown before holding it out for Sans.
“I dunno. I definitely see something, but, can you make any sense of this?”
Sans took her phone and studied the blurry pictures. He could barely make out the trees in the background, but at least the division between them and the snow-covered ground was clear enough. There wasn’t anything that looked particularly like his brother, but there was a whitish arch of something and a smudge of orange that seemed to dart across the frame. It was a better hint than anything they’d had before, but what was it?
Sans squinted at the pictures—wait, was the arch a spine? And his tired mind dredged up memories he hadn't known he had. A lab. A scientist. Two living weapons, the pinnacle of magical engineering--and an accident that erased nearly all evidence it had ever happened. A hand on his shoulder steadied him, and he looked up to see Undyne giving him a worried look. He handed her phone back wordlessly and shoved his hands into his pockets, magic racing.
“Are you okay? You got kinda… unsteady there for a moment.”
“’m fine,” he answered, well aware his eye lights had blinked out.
“Sans, dude, you’re freaking me out,” Undyne called as he walked away, inspecting the edges of the clearing and peering into the trees.
“can i ask you a favor?”
“Uh… yeah?”
“go pick up the least greasy thing from grillby’s you can and wait here. i know what happened to papyrus,” Sans stated, staring into the depths of the forest. The indents were distant and faint from layers of fresh snowfall, but he could see the pattern now and wondered how he hadn’t noticed them before. No points for him, that was sure.
“Uh, sure thing. See you… both? Soon,” Undyne said, and in a blink he was gone.
The forests outside Snowdin were thick and ancient, and most monsters avoided their depths. It was largely the threat of frostbite and getting lost that kept them away, but save for a few exceptions monsters generally preferred company and civilization to untamed forest anyway. If this was where he’d run, it made sense Papyrus hadn’t been found by anyone.
Sans followed his brother’s tracks—long, bounding marks that only increased in distance from one another as he’d picked up speed—and called his name, hoping the trees and snow wouldn’t simply swallow his muted voice altogether. It got darker, and quieter, and there was a growing sense he was trespassing. If he didn’t have his shortcuts Sans might’ve been afraid of losing his way, but it didn’t matter. Shortcuts or not, he would have kept searching now that he had a lead. Considering what the last four weeks had done to him, who knew what state Papyrus would be in.
He eventually found himself in a wide clearing where fresh snow and gusting winds had swept the tracks clean, and sighed. His trail had gone cold again, and he gave a halfhearted laugh at the pun. Papyrus would have hated it…. What he wouldn’t give to hear his exasperated groans again. He called his brother’s name, and listened to it echo faintly until silence laid heavily over him once more. That was the worst of all—the utter silence of an empty world.
Wood cracked behind him, and Sans whirled, magic flaring in his left socket. A pair of orange rings that almost matched met his gaze, and for a moment it was all he saw before he made out the rest of the entity’s face and body from the surrounding gloom. His magic faded, and he sank to the ground. He wasn’t sure how much time passed as they simply stared at one another, but it had to have been at least five minutes before he found his voice and finally addressed the being watching him.
“papyrus?”
A raspy whine answered, and Sans winced. It was his brother’s voice, but weaker, and wordless. Papyrus had always been so proud to learn new words, but now he wouldn’t say even one. This was bad.
“c’mere bro, let’s get you home, huh?”
Papyrus stared for a while, and Sans tried not to listen to the rising panic in his soul. He'd come when he'd called, he had to remember, had to recognize him, right? Why was he still standing so far away...?
"... bro?"
Finally, Papyrus shook himself out, inhaled, then staunchly shook his head with a huff. He hesitated, but did walk over, head held low as he slowly approached. He paused again, only a few feet away and studying him warily—then sat and curled around himself. Sans eyed him sadly, not liking how faint his eye lights were or that he didn’t want to come home. He thought for a while, then leaned back on his hands with a sigh.
“look… i get it. you don’t want to show off your cool bod, it’d be too awesome for anyone to handle and you can’t bear to do that to someone.”
Something that sounded loosely like “nyeh heh heh” chuffed from Papyrus’ jaws.
“but… it’s been three weeks, bro, goin' on a month. everyone wants to know where you went. uh… i’ve been… even lazier than usual without you. i’ll warn ya now, you’re gonna have some major vacuuming to do.”
An exasperated groan rose from his brother.
“i know, i know. but… bro… you can’t be okay with living like an animal out here. I’M not okay with you living like an animal out here. c'mon, undyne’s waiting for us with food, somethin’ hot from grillby’s, and i specifically asked her to get the least greasy thing she could order 'cause i know how you feel about it. there’s a whole month of mtt shows to catch up on. there’s… bedtime stories, and i can’t afford to slack on those, heh…”
Papyrus gave a shuddering sigh. Sans watched as he stretched out his long forelimbs and turned his palms up, contemplating the digits tipped with slender, deadly claws. Then, he buried his face in the snow and laid his hands across his skull, a picture of despair.
“bro, papyrus, it’s ok. you’re smart, you’ll figure out how to change back,” Sans comforted, reaching out to pat his brother’s head. "you're not gonna let something like this get you down, are ya? c'mon. let's go home.”
Papyrus finally raised his head. He looked so tired as he fixed him with a weary look, and Sans’ soul ached. He could only begin to imagine how his brother had felt out here, by himself in a body that must have stirred up old memories—too many of which were unpleasant. But the light shone in Papyrus’ sockets just a little brighter, and he stood up swiftly, head held high.
And then he fainted.
Sans did his best to appear at his side to catch him, but even if skeletons weren’t heavy monsters Sans was decidedly not in shape and the impact made him stumble. He took a moment to regain his footing, but with his brother limp but in his grasp at last, he removed them from that part of reality and placed them back in the tile puzzle room. Undyne jumped at their sudden appearance and would have probably summoned a spear or two if she weren't already holding a takeout bag. Her eye darted over them, and Sans might’ve laughed at her dumbfounded expression if his brother hadn’t still been unconscious.
“What. The HELL. IS THAT?!” she finally shouted as he laid Papyrus down gently, and he bristled at her harsh words.
“excuse you. THAT happens to be my brother.”
Undyne gestured wildly before finding words to express herself again. “BUT? HOW?? WHAT??!”
Papyrus finally moved, his eyes blinking open, though it took a moment for his irises to reignite. Sans ignored Undyne’s flailing and snatched the takeout from her, sitting near his brother’s head and digging around for whatever awaited in the small paper bag. A few days without food wouldn’t affect a monster’s health much, and certainly not someone with high stats like Papyrus, but nearly a month was another story and he was more than a little worried. He withdrew what turned out to be a toasted turkey club sandwich, mentally thanked both Grillby and Undyne for listening, and helped his brother sit up to finally eat something. It wouldn’t be enough to bring Papyrus’ energy back all the way, but he’d be better off than where he was now by a long shot.
The sandwich was snapped up upon being offered, and after a moment Papyrus felt strong enough to stand on his own. Undyne had settled into just staring at them both skeptically, jaw slack and hands clenching and unclenching as if to summon a spear at any moment. Sans crumpled up the bag and stuck it in his pocket, and looked from his brother to the guard captain with amusement. Papyrus looked nervous—or maybe embarrassed, and his first attempt to speak came out as a gusty hiss. But he stepped back, took a moment, and coughed into his fist to clear his throat.
“Hello, Undyne.”
If Undyne had been dumbfounded before, she was well and truly stunned now. She sank to her knees staring, and Sans couldn’t help but laugh at her. A scream started to croak from her, and he decided it’d be best they all headed back to their house before her yelling attracted attention from the other patrols. He beckoned his brother over, and took Undyne’s wrist as he laid a hand on Papyrus’ shoulder, and in an instant they were in the living room... not a moment too soon.
Undyne screeched at the top of her lungs, reaching a truly impressive volume even Papyrus winced at. Her next instinct was apparently to fight, lunging for her friend as if to throw him over her head. Sans darted out of the way as she sped past, and a soft ping sounded before she was flung sideways into the couch. Papyrus gave his brother a disapproving look, but he gave it right back.
“no fighting in my house,” he said, wagging a teasing finger. “sorry to burst your bubble, undyne, but until papyrus is back at full strength i’m not letting you beat him up.”
“I’M NOT GONNA BEAT HIM UP! I’M JUST GONNA PUNCH HIM FOR BEING DUMB!!!” Undyne roared, leaping from the couch and promptly hauled flat on her face. She growled and pushed herself up, only to fly to the ceiling and stick flat on her back. “Will you QUIT with the BLUE MAGIC?!”
“not unless you stop trying to hit my bro,” Sans countered, and Papyrus laid a hand across his eyes.
“Sans, please put Undyne, who need I remind you is our boss, back on the ground?" he asked, voice still shaky from disuse. "I am quite capable of handling her rigorous expressions of affection, thank you.”
Sans looked over to him and sighed. “you’re right as always bro. i just… i know you’re tough and all, but you’re also not at 100 percent and undyne is pretty intense.”
“YOU BET I AM!”
“plus, i haven’t seen you in basically forever after you disappeared, so forgive me for bein’ a little protective.”
Undyne drifted down at last, and though she glared at Sans she didn’t seem intent on continuing her charge when she landed. Instead, she sat decisively on the couch and folded her arms, fixing them each with a sharp look. “Okay. Here’s what’s going to happen. BOTH of you are going to explain what the HECK is going on with Papyrus, and THEN! We’re getting him something else to eat so we don’t have to treat him like a delicate flower.”
“Flowers are actually quite tough!” Papyrus offered, but shrank under a skeptical glare.
“SO! Who wants to start telling me why or how Papyrus ended up as a… dog-dragon-horse thing?”
The brothers exchanged looks.
“It’s just a skeleton thing, you wouldn’t understand,” Papyrus dismissed. “Most of the time I am the wonderful tall fellow you are familiar with, but if I so wish, I can become… this! It’s a thing.”
“yup, it’s true,” Sans confirmed, but Undyne didn’t look convinced.
“So, you could transform into this awesome creature this whole time… and you never told me?!”
“W-well, you see, I never had reason to bring it up! My usual good looks are more than enough as well as more practical for my day-to-day life, so, I much prefer them. Not to mention I… actually completely forgot how to change. Such things happen even to someone as great as me, tragically…” Papyrus explained, his claws fidgeting, "but it's fine! This is totally a normal thing."
Undyne considered his words and finally relaxed. “Huh. Well, do you… remember how to change back?”
“do you think he would have run away if he did?” Sans shot, and she deflated.
“Right. But, if it’s just something you can do, why’d you hide it? There’s all sorts of monsters out there, no one would even blink at you.”
Papyrus grunted nervously. “Consider that this form is considerably more intimidating, and I, already a sight to behold… Not to mention! I want to be known based on my merits--my wit, my battle prowess, my shockingly handsome bones! Not a silly transformation gimmick that wears off within an hour of playing with it.”
Undyne laughed, a welcome sound after her furious screams. “I guess that’s fair. Wait, if this is a skeleton thing… does this mean Sans can do it too?!”
“nope. even if i could... i'm way too lazy for any shapeshifting shenanigans,” Sans answered lightly. “my bro has the ‘cool werewolf’ gig all to himself.”
“I am not a werewolf!!!” Papyrus cried, stomping his feet as the others chuckled. "I am still, clearly, a skeleton!"
“Alright, well, I guess that’s good enough for me. You dudes need anything, let me know, but now that this is resolved I have work to get back to. Oh yeah… Papyrus, consider figuring out how to change back your new assignment. If you really don’t want to go out looking like that, I figure it’s pretty much top priority. And Sans… you get half watch shifts this week, since you’ll probably have to help Papyrus out with… a lot. Sound good?”
“you know i won’t complain about working less,” Sans teased, and she rolled her eye.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll see you punks later, okay? Call me if you need anything--it's... really good to have you back, Papyrus.”
Papyrus looked like he didn't know what to say.
She finally left, closing the door behind her. Sans heaved a sigh, and debated whether to make the effort to move to the couch or just sit on the floor. He decided the floor was good enough. Papyrus made a face but sat too, drawing his own deep sigh.
“Well, what are we going to do, brother?”
“i dunno, bro. you need something else to eat, for one. but beyond that… i dunno. mostly… i’m just glad you’re back too.”
“If I am honest, it is good to be back. You weren’t kidding about the vacuuming though, ugh. Did you do anything while I was gone?”
“… i slept.”
Papyrus groaned. “You would. In any case… I am still rather famished. As you can guess, the forest... didn't exactly have grocery stores. Pardon me if I don’t cook fresh spaghetti for us, I’m sure you’ve missed it terribly.”
“more than i thought i could,” Sans laughed, and it was true. It had never been the flavor that was enjoyable about Papyrus’ cooking.
Sans proposed various techniques for Papyrus to try changing back over dinner, many of which he’d already thought of and attempted. He continued regardless, suggesting progressively ridiculous remedies until Papyrus laughed at him. They curled up on the couch together to watch TV, and Sans was happy to see his brother’s eyes drift closed—Papyrus never seemed to sleep, even when he really needed it.
No doubt he really needed it now.
The next day saw about as much progress, and Papyrus’ happiness fade. Sans tried to ignore the worry growing inside him, but it was clear that the time alone with no success had done a number on Papyrus’ self-confidence. Toss in whatever memories he might’ve relived and no wonder he was having doubts.
Sans watched him pace the living room floor, occasionally sweeping up stray bits of trash he hadn’t noticed before. He was antsy, and judging by the way his tail lashed he was increasingly agitated by the situation. The fact he had to stay inside probably wasn’t helping either.
“you wanna go let off some steam somewhere?” Sans suggested before his brother could start another transit across the carpet, and he startled out of his thoughts.
“Hm? Oh, I’m fine! I just need to think!” he replied, standing stiffly. “The Great Papyrus will not be bested yet!”
“no way, but, i was just thinking you might like to get out before you wear a rut in the floor,” Sans continued, and Papyrus glanced at the carpet. There were a few places where his claws had snagged, and they all aligned perfectly with where he’d been pacing.
“Ah. I see your point. Where could we go? I don’t want anyone to see…”
“i was thinking the woods, middle of nowhere. kinda where you ran away to, but not for another three weeks, heh.”
“That sounds suitable. Alright! We do have a nice house but I can admit it is rather cramped for someone of my stature at this time, so! Take us away, brother!”
Sans obliged, and in an instant they stood in the clearing where they’d reunited only yesterday. Papyrus inhaled deeply and took off running, and Sans happily watched him tear across the field—getting some exercise was just what an active guy like his younger brother needed, and it wasn’t fair to make him stay indoors all the time. He leapt, and rolled, and sprinted through the snow, cackling all the while as he exerted himself. Sans waved to get his attention, then summoned a maze of bones for him to dodge and weave around. Papyrus raced through it flawlessly, and Sans couldn’t help but swell with pride. His brother was so cool.
As he watched, he could almost remember what it was like too.
Something juddered out of sync in his soul, and he froze. Oh no, nope, he was not doing this now or ever again. He shut his eyes and thought about how nice it was to be what he was now, tried to focus on how his soul had felt before something else had awakened within it, and was relieved to feel that foreign sensation die away. The Underground didn’t need two of them running around, and Papyrus had always had an easier time switching forms than he did—even when they both remembered how it all worked. Rubbing the side of his skull, he sat in the snow, and when the magic maze dissipated Papyrus came over to see what was wrong.
“Sans? Are you alright?”
“yep, fine. all those bones wore me out.”
Papyrus made a face. “You really do need to work out more! That was hardly anything compared to what you used to do.”
“yeah, well, that was before i discovered being lazy is the best thing in the world.”
Papyrus groaned. “If I need exercise you do too! Come on, lazybones!”
He was hauled up with a clawed hand and nudged in the back by a toothy snout, and gave an exaggerated groan as he stood. “these legs were not made for running, i’ll have you know.”
“Oh, come on Sans, I know you can do it! Chase me!”
Papyrus dashed off once more, and Sans took a few steps before simply cutting into his brother’s path. The indignant howl he got in return was worth being shoved into the snow, and in retaliation he used a touch of blue magic to bowl his brother over. Papyrus kicked, sending a shower of slush over him, and for a moment they just laughed at one another.
“I suppose I shouldn’t have expected anything else from you,” Papyrus finally said, pushing from the snow. “You have grown to enjoy a much slower pace ever since we… since whatever happened."
“yup, i’m gonna enjoy every moment i get. though, i will say… without you around to push me, i do get… too lazy,” Sans admitted, then sighed. “to be honest bro... it woulda been fine if you’d given me a sign you were okay, a note, anything, but not knowing if you were ever gonna come back... or why you left... well, it was rough. so, uh, i guess what i’m saying is… don’t do that again or i’ll have to ground you.”
Papyrus studied him, then hung his head. “I’m sorry Sans, I know I should have, but… I was. Uncertain.”
It was Sans’ turn to prop himself up and look quizzically at his brother. “about what?”
Papyrus fidgeted under his gaze, clearly considering his words before he continued. “How much do you remember of what happened to us?"
Sans furrowed a brow. "more than i'd like, but less than i should."
“S-so, w-well, when this, happened, I—I didn’t want you to see. I didn’t want anyone to see, but especially not you, because I remembered—I remembered a little of how bad we had it, and if you didn’t remember, I didn’t want to accidentally remind you,” Papyrus explained, digging his claws into the ground. “And then you came and found me, and didn’t care that I was what I am, and I felt like a fool for thinking it was better I had left without a word. I’m sorry, brother.”
Sans leaned back with a soft, bittersweet chuckle. “and here i always kept the fact i remembered anything a secret ‘cause i didn’t want you to worry either. we’re hilarious, a real comedy of errors.”
“Indeed.”
“anyway. the important thing is figuring out how you can change back. i don’t remember a thing about that myself, and obviously neither do you. seems like a thing you just gotta feel.”
“Agreed,” Papyrus huffed. “It used to be so easy! How did we do that? As effortless as the bones we conjure, as natural as breathing! It’s so… so frustrating Sans. I… I don’t want to be this. It’s so easy to just... let my thoughts slip away. And I remember that... they wanted us to lose them, wanted us to... be less of us. And after all I've worked for, I refuse to go back to that!”
"you got this, bro. despite everything that's happened, it's still you."
“I know… It’s hard though. But! Hard things have never discouraged me before! We just have to keep trying no matter how long it takes!”
“you got it,” Sans said, his mood lifting at his brother’s boundless optimism. “you ready to head back home then?”
“I think I’m going to take one more lap! You should try to as well, and no cheating!”
“if i did we’d be here for another hour. you go ahead, i’ll be right here.”
Sans watched him rise and make one last circuit around the clearing, then in a blink they were both back home. Papyrus shook snow from his talons and gave a contented sigh, then sat with a determined look on his face. He puffed out his chest, and Sans knew he was in for one of his brother’s monologues.
“Now that my restlessness has been cured, it! Is time! I can approach the issue of my transformation with a clear head! The simple fact remains that my memory of the technique has been obscured by forces strange and concerning, but! I was able to recall how to turn with the simple triggering of a distant memory of the instruction to do so, so! It stands to reason that a memory of the opposite instruction will have the same effect. Said memories may be distressing and difficult to pinpoint, but! The Great Papyrus has never been one to back down in the face of danger! Nyeheh!”
“nope. like i said bro, you were the bravest one there,” Sans affirmed, sifting through his own tenuous recall of their old lives. “i was never strong enough to do anything, and the... assistants, well... they never spoke up about animal cruelty either. says a lot about them, and none of it’s good.”
Papyrus looked at him sadly. "You know, Sans... I don't think they knew what we really were. With how he was, how could they? I think even he pretended not to sometimes..."
Sans huffed a short sigh. "yeah. think you might be right about that."
“… I wish it all could have been different.”
“me too.”
“But! It’s different now! We’re the determiners of our fates! And I say I will be this beast no longer!” Papyrus declared brightly, banishing the grim mood that had settled in momentarily. Standing proudly, he scrunched his eyes shut and concentrated—to no avail. He sighed, and let his legs slide out from under him until he lay spread-eagle on the carpet.
“i can’t believe i’m seeing my brother lay down on the floor with my own two eyes,” Sans teased, and Papyrus scrambled to rise.
“Nyeh! Do not think for an instant I was being anything remotely close to ‘lazy’ or ‘tired’!” Papyrus refuted, glaring at him with comically bugged eyes. “The effort of trying to overcome my natural inclination for this form simply took some recovering from!”
“so, you were tired,” Sans summarized, earning more disgruntled complaint from his brother. He’d missed this so much.
“Fine! Yes! I required a brief respite,” Papyrus conceded, sitting back on his haunches so he could fold his arms. “If I am honest I am quite tired of this form’s stubbornness! I know I must have been instructed to change many times, but I cannot recall how I managed such a simple task and it! Is! The! Worst! Thing!”
“wow, and that’s pretty bad, since that means it’s even worse than my jokes,” Sans commented, and his brother stamped his forefeet down.
“It is!”
“well, we better get to work then. undyne said this was your new assignment, i can’t believe how much you’ve slacked off on it already.”
“No! Nooooo!” Papyrus howled, clasping his head in his hands.
The banter continued as the brothers worked to recall what had once been a regular part of their lives. Some memories slowly filtered back, hazes of shadows and sharp objects resolving into people with needles and too-bright rooms full of instruments. Long nights that sometimes became days that became nights again, spent alone and shivering in an empty room. Hours of training for a task neither of them really understood, harsh tests of every aspect of their abilities imaginable, pushing them to the limits of their endurance. Fleeting moments of happiness together.
All encouraged and directed by a man whose words could seem kind, but masked a cruel curiosity and an unbending will. They were never meant to have souls or personalities. He was going to ensure his work continued despite those.
But for all these memories, there were still gaps. Black holes that would never divulge the information that had once been there--and considering the nature of what Sans did remember, he couldn't help but feel perhaps that was for the best. But if Papyrus' memory of how to shift back had been engulfed by one of these voids... then he might not ever remember, and have to figure it out all over again. On Sans’ part, he’d at least recalled why he didn’t know the method to change back, and it had nothing to do with a spotty memory.
“AT LEAST IN YOUR OTHER FORM YOU LOOK MORE LIKE A SUCCESS. NEVER TAKE THIS SHAPE AGAIN.”
The words had stung anew, a biting remark on a small, frail body that was useless to a lab that only made weapons. He ought to at least look the part, and wasn't allowed anything else. It was only the third time Sans had taken that smaller form in the lab; from then on, he'd slowly accepted his life as a beast. It was easier that way.
"I think perhaps we've had enough," Papyrus said in a low voice, shaking him out of a flat stare after recalling that particular memory. "Let's take our minds off things for a while!"
Sans was glad to get up and laze in front of the TV as Papyrus reheated leftovers for them both. MTT had something mindless on as usual, and it was just the thing for drowning out painful memories. Papyrus snorted when he noticed his brother had fallen asleep, and busied himself with cleaning up the dishes before rejoining him on the couch to doze himself. It had been a long day, but more were sure to follow. They needed all the rest they could get.
It wasn't going to come easy.
Decorum (1/3)
Oh hey! With the recent marvel abominations (read: endg*me) I have turned to DC for some comfort and I was not disappointed. So here’s my first attempt at writing something of the DC universe. So uh, enjoy the fruit of my procrastination. Pls like, reblog, comment, lemme know what you think.
Part 2
Pairing: Dick Grayson x Reader, eventually Jason Todd x Reader
Number of words: 2569
Warnings: lots of angst, arranged marriage, rich people lol, few swear words, mentions of cheating.
Summary: Being married to Dick Grayson is not as glamorous as everyone else in Gotham would think, especially since you both hate each other. But unbeknownst to him, his absence does have consequences.
The limo was silent. It always was, aside from the casual buzzing of Dick’s cell phone every three minutes or so. It was always the same story, you’d get ready in silence, in your seperate rooms, then meet in the vehicule already. The ride would be quiet, devoid of eye contact, or god forbid, remarks on the other’s effort on their evening attire. Yours was always the best, thought forward and flawless. Dick’s was pretty much the same every time, with the exception of a minor variant not to be caught dead in the same outfit twice.
Imagine the blow to the Wayne’s reputation if he did.
Then, you would pull out the smiles for the cameras the split second before the limo door opened. He would get out first and offer you his arm, beaming like he actually liked you. You would walk the red carpet at his arms, as if he allowed them outside of the public eye. You would mingle with the high society of Gotham and rave about how great was the fundraising, and how great was Bruce Wayne. How great was the company going with your father’s investments, and just how great life was with your husband. The women would tell you all about how your couple was such a match in heaven, but the jealousy behind their eyes would be a little too obvious. After all, you did secure Dick Grayson as your husband. The Boy Wonder, the Golden Boy, Gotham’s favourite son.
Yeah, isn’t life great.
And at the end of the night, after empty-smiling so much it hurt, you would climb back into the limo, take your seat as far as each other as possible, and return to your normal routine of avoiding each other. You knew he blamed you for forcing this union on you, even though you were the only one to voice your disagreement on it. Wayne Industries had suffered a blow after a prolonged absence from Bruce--one of them, anyway--and your father had so generously offered to help with the bailout. It came to a condition, however, one that would cost both you and Dick your freedom. But isn’t it just was the high society does, what they’ve always done? Personal feelings don’t matter, only money and reputation do. And Bruce, well, Bruce really needed that bailout for some reason. You were surprised, usually he had a tendency not to ask for help and do it himself.
There must have been some interest he had to protect at all cost.
You found out what put him against a wall a year later, at the same time you discovered that not all of Dick’s night escapades were dedicated to seeing Barbara. You had understood soon enough after your marriage that Dick would always be Dick, and set an accord with him that as long as his affair didn’t reach the public, you would turn a blind eye to it. But the bruises and haunting look in his eyes--whenever you could catch them--told an alternative narrative. You weren’t dumb, you put two and two together, with him and Bruce’s similar disappearing patterns. All this time spent in silence left a lot of space to observe, and observe you did.
And your theory was that he knew the second you discovered. The shift in both of your attitudes was unspoken, as everything else was, but it was there, visibly and prominent. At first he would send you questioning glances when he thought you weren’t paying attention, as he was trying to figure out why you hadn’t lashed out, or as to when exactly you would sell him out to the police. Then, he stopped sneaking back in at the early hours of the morning, him and Bruce even sometimes discussed vigilante matters with you at ear range. Hushered, but not hidden. He even let you tend to his wounds that one time, no question asked from either of you. It was the closest you got to him before he shut you out again.
“What did I do this time?”
His sighing voice snapped you out of your thoughts, and your eyes trailed from the window to him. You were back in the limo after the gala, and oh, he had spoken. Unusual thing for him to do, but his accusatory tone was anything but. You met his eyes half a second, then went back to looking outside. You couldn’t see anything in the darkness, but it was better than looking at him.
“You weren’t subtle” You hummed, and you felt the shift in his attitude. He knew as well as you did what you were talking about. “I can take a lot of shit you do, but I won’t let you publicly humiliate me”
“Come on” He scoffed dismissively. “It’s not like I went over there and made out with her”
“Those people are vultures” Your tone turned harsh as you looked back at him. “You’re lucky nobody noticed you straight up ogling at Barbara this time, or the scandal would already be out”
“Ah, yes. Your precious reputation” He rolled his eyes. “God forbid anyone taint it”
“Not just mine, but yours and Bruce as well” You raised your chin in defiance. You didn’t care if you were being an asshole to him, you weren’t the one acting like one in the relationship, if there was any. “Remember that if I leave, I leave with the money”
“Aren’t you tired of making that threat every times?” He asked sarcastically, crossing his arms over his chest defensively. “You could at least come up with a new one”
“I could, it’s not for the lack of source material” You mused, and he tensed. “But I won’t. And you know why?”
He didn’t answer as the car came to a halt.
“Because I think of myself as a decent person, and despite how you’re behaving toward me, I will never stoop so low as to attack your dignity” You spoke firmly, quickly. You barely noticed Dick recoiling in his seat; never you had been so direct, so dry with him. You pushed the door open, and paused. “You better start managing yourself, because I’m done trying”
With that, you slammed the door and left him stunned in the car.
---------
“Mr. Grayson could not join us tonight?”
You turned around and smiled at Mr. Fowley, one of the generous donator to the Wayne foundation. They always asked about him, and you got pretty good at coming up with different excuses every time to justify his absence.
“Unfortunately, he and Mr. Wayne had to attend to a very important board meeting regarding the passing down of Wayne Industries assets when the time comes” You answered easily. It had become a second nature to you to cover for him ever since you said I do. “He was very sorry not to be able to attend”
He wasn’t.
“That’s unfortunate indeed” He sighed. “I wished to give him my gratitude for solving the mystery of my lost paintings”
Dick had solved the disappearance of one of the most impressive private collections of original Monets in North America. And obviously, it only made him more popular. But you had to give it to him, he was a fantastic detective with a flair for finding what others couldn’t.
“Then I will make sure to pass your praises along to him when I see him later” You nodded. “Thank you for being here tonight, Mr.Fowley. I hope you enjoy the night”
He had been the fourth guest to ask you about Dick. At the beginning of your marriage, it made you incredibly angry, but now you just accepted it, what else could you do? He would never be a presence you could count on, and you learned to deal with it. So when the gala ended, you were once again left to close the place alone. The cleaning crew would take care of the bigger mess tomorrow, but you were still responsible of the keys.
It seemed like forever until you reached the garage. Your car was the last one, obviously, since you decided to drive yourself. It had been your wedding gift from Bruce, a one in the world car that made head turns wherever you went. And after that almost fiasco, you needed to do some damage control and remind the high people of Gotham of the status quo. You truly ever rode the limo if Dick was there, anyway. You climbed in and started the engine, leaving the place tired and slightly annoyed.
However, halfway home, your engine decided to turn off, making you pull over on the side of the road. The car slowly rolled to a stop, seemingly having shut down completely. Not even your headlights responded, and it made you worried. No smoke was coming out of the hood, no strange odour reached your nose either. With a huff and your annoyance growing, you waited fifteen minutes and tried again to start the car.
Nothing.
You looked outside, seeing nothing around in the darkness. You tried to call for a taxi, but none of them were any close to your area. Or it would have taken at least two hours, as the lady on the other end of the phone so kindly told you so. You were left with one option, and it didn’t make you happy. But you knew nothing about car mechanic, so you did not have a choice. You reached for your phone and stared at it, deliberating if you really needed to call him. But reason got the best of you, so you swiped your phone open, went to your contact list and pressed Dick’s name. It hadn’t rung twice that it sent you straight to the voicemail. He had declined your call. You tried to call again, then again. The fourth time, it rang, and rang, until you reached the voicemail again. He hadn’t declined it this time, he only ignored it. You rubbed the bridge of your nose and sighed at the cold, impersonal robotic voice on the other end.
You have reached the voicemail of: Dick Grayson. Please leave a message after the dial tone.
“Dick, uh, it’s me. My car has broken down on the road 49, about twenty minutes drive from the mansion. I tried a taxi but I’m literally in the middle of nowhere. Could you pick me up? … Call me when you get this”
And you hung up. You waited fifteen minutes, checking your phone more often than you cared to admit. It was getting cold without heating, and he still didn’t call you back. It was too early for patrol, so he wasn’t gone yet. He was probably with Barbara, as usual. He had probably shut down his phone so it wouldn’t disturb them, he was probably pissed at you too.
Asshole.
You got annoyed, so you changed strategy and called someone else. If Dick wasn’t going to answer the god damn phone, a different Wayne would. You scrolled down your contacts and found Jason’s name. You didn’t hesitate as you launched the call, and he picked up at the third ring.
“Best looking Wayne son on the phone, how can I help you?”
“Jason” You chuckled at his humour. At least someone was having a better night than you. “I was wondering if you could come pick me up. My car broke down in the middle of nowhere and Dick won’t answer his phone”
“Ah, living up to his name once again I see” He hummed. He was also aware of Dick’s second type of night time activity. “I am so sorry, I’m actually out of town taking care of… Something. Isn’t Daddy Dearest around? Or Alfred?”
“Justice League matters” You sighed. “Only Dick can reach him during those meetings. And Alfred’s with Bruce”
“I can try and call someone” He suggested. “I have a few people that owe me favors”
“Thank you Jay, but uh, I think I’ll walk” You nodded to yourself. You knew the road well enough to make your way home. “It’s not that far”
“I do not agree with that but I can’t stop you either--hold on” His voice hitched, followed by a grunt that wasn’t his. It sounded like he was punching a guy, but you didn’t ask. It was Jason doing Jason stuff. You waited patiently, occasionally hearing glass and wood break. Nothing out of the ordinary, if you were honest. It didn’t freak you out anymore. “Listen, I-- oh fucker! I gotta go, but call me when you get home, okay?”
“Will do” You couldn’t help the small smile on your lips. Jason had always been the best, in his own weird way to cheer you up. “Thanks Jason”
“You’re welcome” He huffed. “Be careful”
He ended the call after that, probably off to finish his important business. You shook your head and put on your coat and scarf, grabbing your purse and your keys. You got out, locked the doors and began walking on the side of the deserted road. You picked your phone again and dialed Dick’s number once again, waiting for the inevitable voicemail.
“Dick. It’s me again. Don’t bother coming, I’m walking home. Hope you have fun tonight”
You hung up and shoved the phone in your pocket, along with your hands to warm them up. You walked at a brisk pace, remaining aware of your surroundings at all time. You didn’t live as a Wayne without knowing the basics of self defence, and that became much more clearer as to why once you found out about the vigilante thing. Both Bruce and Jason had made sure you weren’t totally defenceless, despite the fact that you had no affinity for combat like them. You didn’t fit, only your money did.
Perhaps it was why Dick had always disliked you.
But that basic training was enough to make you notice something wasn’t right. Only your footstep on the gravel echoed into the night, but you had that nagging feeling that you weren’t alone. You looked behind your shoulder, but nothing was there still. You kept going, but your hand reached for your phone in your pocket. With your senses focused on your surroundings, your fingers found Dick’s contact, and you waited for the voicemail again.
“Dick, I think I’m being followed. Please call me if you get this”
Then you hung up again. The feeling only grew as your pace quickened, your eyesight now only focused forward. You didn’t have the guts to look behind you. You tried to call a few other time, hanging up before it got to the voicemail. You were terrified, you had to grab Dick’s attention even if he would be pissed at you for blowing up his phone.
“Come on, come on” You muttered to yourself as he still didn’t pick up. Then, the sound of rocks crushing behind you made your heartbeat stop for a second. Someone was definitely following you. You pressed the call button one more time as you started running. Footsteps took after you, and you knew you were done for.
You have reached the voicemail of: Dick Grayson. Please leave a message after the dial tone.
“Someone’s behind me” You said in a hurry as they got closer and closer. “They’re gaining on me and--”
The sound of your phone hitting the ground ended your voicemail.
