the writing style in this one is SO cool, i love it! non-linear narratives are my thing, i never get tired of it. and the whump in this is so good.. i like whump fanfiction, lol. the combination of characters in this is really fun as well, though everything is told from kaeya's very disoriented point of view. anyway, amazing exploration of his character!! the next work in this series, The thaw that comes in springtime (plus the next next work!), is also really good and i loved it, particularly the ragbros bit lol. another must read!

It’s been a while since I last sent something here and I’m so sorry about that!! I’m doing a lot better now (although I never got my test results back to see if I had that syndrome or not LOL) and I almost have the two new Fontaine regions 100% oopsies! But I have like serious brainrot (but school is so tiring I usually just nap the whole afternoon) anyways!! I listened to one of mitski’s songs called “Once More to See You” and ugh it honestly just reminded me of Dottore and fragile!reader. The beginning makes me think of how fragil!reader and Dottore (especially) having a reputation and being looked as “weird” or as students who don’t belong in the Akademiya. The rest of the song just reminds me of Dottore being alone once fragile!reader fell into their coma, and him longing to feel your hand against his. To have your warm touch, caress his cheek, kiss his lips, embrace him, and to say his name, “Zandik!” In that lovely tone of yours. ouuughh I love fragile!reader and Dottore so so much just Dottore having to wait so long for them to wake up. Like imagine having to wait hundreds of years for the only person who’s every shown you affection and love. The only person to hold you so lovingly, say your name with love and not disgust, or with horror.

And after waking up??? Oughhh I know I say this a bit frequently but Dottore would become so so protective and possessive. I mean, you’re the only thing he has left, and he almost lost you once. He won’t spare to almost lose you another time, especially after centuries went by without your warm touch, or your voice. He defff savors every moment you two have together when he’s available. And especially when he becomes so used to having you on his lap and him being able to feel your heartbeat. Sometimes he may unconsciously tighten his grip on you when he’s holding you.

Dottore was definitely ostracized and excluded in the Akademiya, everyone thought that he nor his crazy ideas belonged there. And you, I imagine your reputation start to get dragged through the mud the more you hang out with Dottore. They just don't understand. Why would you ever want to even sit in the same room as him, much less befriend him? You started to be labeled as the same things as him. You don't mind (most of the time, sometimes it still gets to you) because you think those people are just shallow compared to your friend. But Zandik himself doesn't understand you either? There's no way that his "friendship" (your words, not his) is worth the stress of all this. He doesn't understand, it's not like you're using him, if anything he's the one using you instead. Zandik doesn't understand... but he's not going to admit that the fact that you chose him over everyone else makes him feel a certain way. And that tingly feeling only grows and grows. And he refuses to acknowledge it... until you leave him and suddenly everything he's chosen to ignore hits him at once. Everything that Zandik's been trying so hard to deny, he admits to now. Made him realize that living by himself again in the dorms is slowly making him even crazier without you. Made him realize that he's willing to do anything, and i mean anything, to get you back.

OH YEAH Dottore is extremely protective over you when you finally wake up. See, Dottore isn't really scared of someone else hurting you. He knows that he and his segments would never let that happen. Rather, he's scared of other things. Like your illness. Things he can't control. Dottore is a man who's used to being in control now, so when he can't predict things? When he can't see them coming? He doesn't like that. Not one bit, especially when it comes to you. He needs to know everything, otherwise, he won't be satisfied. He can't risk you being hurt again, not under his watch. You're very confused in the beginning because hello? This is the same guy who used to let you go out and do all these crazy tasks on his behalf? But yeah, he can't help but be very possessive. I thought about closing them during threads but felt that’s not fair so I will leave them open and see if you guys can respect my wishes. I trust y’all will you’ve been nothing but kind and patient to me (AND IM SO GRATEFUL AHHH) but still.

-KEEP SERIOUS RPS IN THREADS PLEASE, doing it via asks is very straining for me sorry if that’s an inconvenience :,]

-I won’t be doing colored replies anymore unless it’s for added emphasis, it was taking too long and it gave me a headache ngl. I have eyesight problems and I honestly made them slightly worse doing that.

-I don’t know if I’ll do any events for a while, up until I’m in the swing of things again. I got too ambitious and got severely burnt out and tired. :,]

☠️ - angry/violent headcanon!

Oughhh I love Kaneki being angry and violent 🥰🥰 I think sometimes when Shironeki is very emotional, he’ll seek out groups instead of singular ghouls to eat but also to lash out on and toy with a bit. He repeats a lot of the trauma that was inflicted onto him but usually pushes it out of his mind by the next day and can’t recall it. If he finds one guy separate to the rest of the group, he’d break their limbs to keep them from getting away, then go find the rest of the group to kill in front of them if they didn’t answer whatever questions he wanted. Since his mind isn’t there altogether the questions can be about things he doesn’t really need information on, since they’re more to justify the ordeal to himself as an interrogation. Also, whoever he decides to be most pissed at would end up with some serious head damage (sometimes half of it is even missing!!!). At the end he’ll eat everyone’s kakuhous before leaving. Very often I like to imagine him popping into a public bathroom to get changed after this sort of thing, then pop into McDonalds and order a coffee to sip while people watching and having mild thoughts on eating even more :3 he’s so cute sitting there aww I wish he could eat soggy fries too

▼ - childhood headcanon!

Kaneki wrote a lot of stories as a wee lad. When he was living with his mother he’d write a lot of fantasy inspired things about different worlds with dragons and elves. They were very descriptive, and he had a huge imagination! Many were set in the same world which he’d use as a form of escapism. The main character was usually a boy just a bit older than him, who’d kill monsters with spells he learned from books, and receive lots of praise from his family and friends. As he got a little older he gave the boy a lot of his own hardships and had a lot of his friends turn on him for things that were out of his control, then had him forced to kill his own mother. He later felt EXTREMELY guilty about this and tossed out the entire book.

When he moved in with his aunt he wrote memos about the nice things he used to do with his mother and some vent pieces that would get scrunched up or burnt. He took a lot of inspiration from Takatsuki too, and wrote some fanfiction with the characters in another book he guarded with his life. Sometimes he’d even do drawings to match the story and Takatsuki’s real works :) he became a pretty good artist and used his new skill for lots of good things (drawing his and Hide’s “ideal girlfriend” every 2 weeks)

This is me looking through the character refs and pointing at all the little things I apparently did while drawing them because DAMN putting some of these side by side puts things in perspective.

This gonna be a LONG ONE boys, and very much just an analysis of design details. Very skippable read dw.

HEART

okok the one that kickstarted a LOT of my mutuals interest, its Heart!

...I don't have much to say about him asdkjsdf literally what is on the tin. Goes directly from happy little mischievous goober to unconscious, injured, and missing wings. Even the clothes change has an in-universe medical reason, being that they want to keep an eye on the blackened limbs. (and post-Apathy he looks SO SMALL AND FRAIL SOMEHOW oughhh)

The MAIN THING is that pre-ROE is a proper character reference with details and stuff, while post-Apathy is completely stripped of all character that he had. Completely. Its not a character reference, its just a reference.

THE THING I THOUGHT PEOPLE WOULD NOTICE. AND COMMENT ON THOUGH. IS THE NAME TAG I USED FOR HIM

Notice anything different about the name tag? Besides the timeline event?

THE HEART SYMBOL. I changed it from a cutesy drawn emoticon heart to an anatomically correct heart, to represent his change to being only the Physical Beating Heart.

The other thing being that post-Apathy is SIGNIFICANTLY DARKER in colour. There's still purple in it, but its dark and looks a lot less lively than the bright purplish-pink of pre-ROE. (I actually just blended a lot of black in so the purple is still sorta there)

OH and a design detail that I love about Heart's clothes. The EKG heartbeat on his clothes.

A subtle little nod to him being both the Emotional Side and also the Beating Heart.

MIND/PERSEVERANCE

Alright gonna start with again the thing I'm surprised no one commented on. The name tags. Really, there's only one thing here that's important (other than the fact that he changes his name)

Heart's blindfold. It tangles around him and is a reminder of who he is doing everything for. Even in his name the reminder and guilt lingers.

Onto the Mind!

I drew him in an open pose, looking lowkey like how my lecturers do when they're teaching. He's stood straight, dressed cleanly, and has a blazer on. It's hard to tell and I forgot to mention it, but his shirt is tucked in here. Very prim and proper, yet also a little relaxed with his hair down. You could even imagine him scolding Heart here that's what he looks like.

The Axon Dendrites I put on his shoulders are meant to call back to his roles as the Logical Side and the Physical Thinking Mind.

In contrast, Perseverance.

He is TIRED and STRESSED. He has eyebags now, and one hand is holding his temples (I literally hold my head like that when I'm stressed). The stress comes through in how he's undressed compared to his Mind reference. He's not wearing his jacket, and his shirt is untucked now. In the reference I also mentioned that his arms are slowly beginning to rust. Despite the state of undress, he's got his hair up. He's stopped taking care of himself and it is obvious in his stance. The fact that he isn't even looking up anymore, but looking down instead also sells this.

ALSO. Elements of Heart's colours being added to his design. Purple and white.

SOUL/PENITENCE

ough my babygirl. Starting with the name tags again, although this one isn't nearly as symbolic.

Other than a name change, I added a tiny little heart <3. Caring for Heart becomes central to him. (fun fact: initially I had the heart on the tines of the trident, but that just felt too mean) OH and the underline is his trident instead :D

Onto the Soul!

Pre-ROE is just so full of LIFE. He stands openly, his pose is open, you can see all of him. He's covered in color and little personal additions like a starred shirt, dyed clothes, charms, bracelets, and shoelaces. He's happily wearing a skirt. He's got short sleeves and rolled up pants, no fear or need to cover up.

Although... he does have his HMS charms on a chain. Interesting choice, a chain. Almost like he is chained by the dynamic of HMS and the loops-

Anyways, Penitence ref! Again, tws for graphic injury

And he's closed off. Literally, his entire pose is hunching inwards and closed. He's unrolled his pants and is wearing a hoodie that covers his entire arms length. He's closed himself off.

Design elements wise he's wearing Heart's hoodie. It consumes his entire identity. Just the barest hint of his original red colour scheme peeks through at the bottom.

And the chains. There's two now, one around his neck and one at his waist, holding the symbols of HMSW. Soul/Penitence is literally chained by responsibility, both before and after Heartless events begin.

And now for something else about the references that I did which is only obvious is you had them side by side.

Pre-ROE, Heart stands on the left while Mind and Soul stand on the right. Soul is even facing the right side of the screen. It foreshadows in incoming split that happens during Heartless.

Post-Apathy, Perseverance and Penitence continue facing away from each other, despite being on the same side of the screen. This is something I didn't share much yet but it foreshadows a future rift that they will have, as well as the fact that they aren't really improving from who they were pre-roe yet.

Heartless only improves when they ALL change for the better.

I chose to interpret this as scents I like to wear as perfumes candles bodywashes etc because choosing my top 5 scents ever is far too much of a world changing decision to make. So here's a look into what I most commonly smell like I guess

Vanilla/Cotton Candy

A toss up because I usually wear these hand in hand. A sweet treat. A delicious scent combo for the ages. I smell like a carnal carnival carnie and everybody wants to be my girlfriend when I smell like this. This is real. This is real life. You couldn't handle this scent combo.

Cherry/Blackberry

Another toss up! I like cherry scents because they also sometimes just smell like candy red. and also because my color pallete irl is black and red so it's on theme to smell like these. But I have a perfume that smells like both black cherries and blackberries that I got for the holidays and it smells so delightful.

Lemon

Lemon scent is like a gender to me its like a long lost childhood friend it's like a soldier in the trenches with me with which I shared an intimate night it's a narrative motif to me you would not understand my relationship with lemon scent if you tried. It smells good tee hee. I love a candle that smells like right after it rains. I don't carry an umbrella so there have been occasions where I've become a sopping wet pathetic rain smelling creechjre.

When I was really young we used to get these every summer and I loved to catch them. I don't know if it's because I've moved since then or climate change or what, but I don't see them much anymore and it makes me sad. I miss evenings in June through August filled with hundreds of tiny little living lanterns in the sky. I miss my happy glowy flying friends :< whenever I see them now I make an effort to go out and run around and let them land in my hand and stuff. Sometimes I'll catch a few but now that I'm older I know better and I release them a few songs after. Fireflies if you're reading this I love you and miss you. :<

my biggest comic icks are when female characters are Romantic Accessories who get passed around their specific superhero group like a coin (which unfortunately happens so so so so so much i hate it here), and also when a specific pairing is written together so much that their personalities kinda get thrown out the window because theyre not individual characters anymore theyre A Couple, and also when writers very clearly obviously haven't even read the wiki page on the characters they're writing. and also when people who haven't even touched a single comic book in their entire lives write fanfic about the comics
