I do appreciate that cases in RWBY where a person sends away their backup and allies because those people are weaker as individuals literally never ends well.
Ozpin might have beaten Cinder in the Vault had he not sent Pyrrha and Jaune away. Pyrrha wouldn’t have died on top of the tower had Jaune been there, as he almost certainly would have unlocked his semblance at the sight of her in mortal peril. Cinder wouldn’t have lost to Raven and Vernal in V5 had she waited and brought Emerald and Mercury (or her whole evil squad) with her.
We constantly see characters, especially the mentors or “stronger” ones, keep their supposed allies away from the fight in the interest of protecting them. But in RWBY, that never ends well. Teams exist for a reason, and refusing backup because you see your friends as weaker only ever buys time before they have to face that same enemy alone.

RWBY Relic Pieces in Volume 1, Symbolism of the Pieces, and How It Ties To the Broader Narrative.
Did a quick searchup on the symbolism of chess pieces, and taking what I saw into consideration (note that this is very abridged, and possibly not entirely correct):
CRDL and the Black Bishop
Bishops are representative of religion, as well as spirituality, morality, and wisdom, and a direct reference to Cardin's mythological reference, the Cardinal of Winchester. In regards to the broader narrative that RWBY sets up, he can be considered V1's partial representation of the institution of Huntsmen, more specifically the deeply flawed and darker side standing opposite to the better/neutral aspects of Huntsmen that RWBY/JNPR represent, due to being a racist bully who stands against Grimm, yet also willfully persecutes and harms the people he's supposed to fight for, such as minority groups like Faunus and (given Jaune at this point is basically a civilian in huntsmen's clothing and training wheels) the people depending on the circumstances. Also acts as a form of foreshadowing to the other deeply flawed or outright bad huntsmen we'd come to see later in the series, as well as highlighting the lack of wisdom and morality that can blight the institutions that Huntsmen are supposed to be, represent and protect.
The Black pieces in chess always move second, which highlights how the Huntsmen are a highly reactive organization, and how this severely limits their ability to truly tackle the bigger problems regarding threats like the Grimm, Salem, society's deep internal problems, and in the bigger picture, Ozpin's divine mission.
JNPR and the White Rook
Rooks are representative of the land, being symbolic of the fortress that guards a city or land and its royalty, and how they essentially "guard" the other pieces, as well as representing stability. The majority of JNPR come from civilians compared to the likes of RWBY, with this becoming completely the case after Pyrrha's death and Oscar's inclusion, and they're shown consistently throughout the series as having the strongest connections to civilians on a personal level. They also frequently as the bedrock and stabilizing influence, through Jaune, Nora and Ren's friendships and roles as supporting characters. Being white pieces also highlights how as time goes on, they would develop an increasingly proactive role through the questioning of the narrative told to them by the metaphorical "royals" (in this case, Ozpin's secret circle) and the latter's failure to actually protect them.
This is especially notable in regards to Jaune, Nora, and from a story perspective Ren, given how the former consistently questions Ozpin and his inner circle's shadier actions throughout most of V4 - V8, and Nora and Ren were failed miserably and made orphans due to the lack of huntsmen and the society around them failing to protect them, while putting them into a situation where their only recourse is to become part of the system that failed them.
RWBY and the White Knight
Knight pieces are representative of the medieval military, fitting given the status of Huntsmen, as well as being considered adventurous, valorous, and unpredictable due to their unique fighting style allowing them a level of unpredictability that other pieces don't have, fitting of how RWBY are the main proactive force to pushing Ozpin and the true nature of the secret war against Salem out into uncharted territory, forcing them to actually change and grow.
Knights are also often historically drawn from nobility, much like how every major character in RWBY has some kind of tie to Remnant's most illustrious groups or some kind of major player (Ruby and Yang being part of major Huntsmen lineages, Weiss being a rich heiress to the most powerful corporation in the world, and Blake being effectively the Princess of the Faunus, as well as having ties to the most prominent civil rights activists and movements in all iterations of the White Fang).
Much like JNPR, they are far more proactive compared to the royals they serve, actively pushing the latter outside their comfort zone in a two-pronged attack alongside JNPR, but the series also strives to highlight and deconstruct the messier aspects of their relationship as huntsmen (and thus a form of warrior caste/mercenary, with the following tension in that relationship with the people they are trying to protect) and how the unpredictable nature of their changes results in as much positive and messier forms of change, for better or worse.
This got way longer than I thought it would.

oz : well ever one ibeen hiding who summer maiden is so you dont freak out but it cardin mom
Ruby: Well, we're in Vacuo, now All we need to do is find the Summer Maiden.
Ozcar: Oh, That Should be easy I already know who it is.
Jaune: Well That's good. Who is it?
Ozcar: Do you remember Mister Winchester?
Jaune: Cardin? Is he trans?
Ozcar: No - I'm surprised that was your first Idea - No, It's his mother. She's a Doctor, and a retired Huntress. She's not unlike your own mother only a bit ...
~~~~~
*Smack*
Mama Winchester: Oh sure! I'm counting on you!
Cardin: Don't hit me old Lady! I'll Kill you!
Mama Winchester: *Smack* Shut up! It's your Fault to Begin with for being so Weak! You got caught and now you're causing trouble for Everyone!
Papa Winchester: Hey ... You two Stop it ... You're startling the Teachers ...
Cardin: Shut up old man! Don't Butt in!
Ozpin and Glynda: ...
Mama Winchester: You're the one who should shut up! If you're going to talk, then speak clearly!
Ozpin: (What's with the aggression in this family ...)
Glynda: So, is it alright then?
Mama Winchester: Hmm? Oh, the dorms. We'd actually be really grateful! Cardin's Recklees, but pretty good at everything he sets his mind to. Blessed with a good semblance and a pretty good amount of aura as well.
Mama Winchester: A lot of the others in his old academy fawned over him all the time so he ended up like this. He kept getting praised for shallow stuff.
~~~~~
Ozcar: Actually no, She's kind of exactly like your mother. Her compliance was one of the reasons Cardin was allowed into Beacon - Not the entire reason mind you, but one of them

I think it’s interesting how the main protagonist deaths in rwby have all been framed as a personal choice. Cinder tells pyrrha not to follow her, penny asks jaune, and now ruby drinks the tea. Now I definitely have thoughts on that stuff but right now I want to talk about the choice to die versus the choice to live.
All our “good guys” choose to die for the cause, or choose to die because the cause is hopeless. While the main antagonist, salem, specifically does NOT choose death and her story is about her defiance of death. Death is framed as not necessarily a good thing, but a thing that happens to good people. Jaune lived long enough to see himself become the villain, mirroring Salem’s story. Summer hasn’t died, which is framed as worse than if she had.
Then there is the theme of rebirth. Rebirth is framed as a bad thing, a sort of torture, an inability to escape the inevitability of death in any of your lives. Ozpin is not coping. Penny was brought back to life, and then brought back again, and it was all futile because in the end she still chose to die. Alyx used the tree’s rebirth to sacrifice(?) her brother.
Ultimately, ruby will be reborn in the tree, which I can only conclude is going to be a catastrophically bad thing. She will not use this rebirth to let go of her sorrows and instead will be shaped by them, becoming something worse. Maybe wby will have to fight her. I don’t know.

Ok I think I'm back to being normal (or more like abnormal) about RWBY again
Anyway hi can we talk about Qrow and Oscar for a moment?
Cus like. In V5 they seem kinda close at first glance with Qrow dropping everything to protect Oscar at the Battle of Haven, hanging out with him, etc, but in hindsight? I don't rly know how much Qrow actually cares about Oscar
Now dgmw I'm not saying Qrow doesn't care about Oscar at all. The concern Qrow had for him when he was exhausted after the Battle of Haven did seem pretty genuine to me personally, and he seemed pretty upset on Oscar's behalf about the whole "his consciousness will be replaced with Ozpin's in time" thing. But other than these specific scenarios and maybe a couple others, I don't think it's Oscar who's rly at the forefront of Qrow's mind most of the time here. I think Qrow is much more concerned with the fact that Ozpin is in there
And on that topic, Qrow seems to have this unhealthy idolization of Ozpin. He places the entirety of his trust in Ozpin, to the point where he goes into a severe depressive/alcoholic spiral after he realizes Ozpin's been lying to him. I don't entirely blame the guy; after all, Ozpin was the first figure of authority to ever find value in Qrow, by Qrow's own admission
But I think it rly affects Qrow's relationship with Oscar too. I don't think Qrow rly sees Oscar as, well, Oscar, all the time, but as someone who shares a body with Ozpin, just a middleman between the two. And I think Ozpin being in there is a bit more important to Qrow
Like, think about it, when Qrow learned that Ozpin was hiding all that stuff about his past, when did he ever have another meaningful interaction with Oscar after that? Ik after that other relationships for Qrow and Oscar were emphasized (notably Clover/Robyn and Ironwood/Salem, respectively), but still, you'd think there'd be *some* kinda closure between the two. Heck Qrow didn't even apologize to Oscar (onscreen, at least) for punching him in the face (yeah Ozpin was in control at the time but like. That was Oscar's body still, poor kid had to have felt that, he was punched so hard he was blown back into a tree)!
All this to say:
I'd love to see a conversation between Qrow and Oscar where they get some closure on that, Qrow actually apologizes and maybe even starts to unpack his whole unhealthy idolization of Ozpin thing, and Oscar actually has someone to treat him like Oscar Pine, not Ozpin. Their relationship has a lot of potential for exploration in terms of character development and I think it could rly benefit from being utilized
The issue is that this would require Qrow to talk about his feelings, smth he is not keen on doing at all, lol

Quick idea:
Beacon Academy Paintball Battle Royale
It happens every year for the incoming first-years — a way to get students used to the competitive nature of Huntsman Academies, to improve spatial awareness and accuracy, testing stealth and marksmanship in a low stakes environment….
…is what Ozpin told the council when they questioned why he needed paintball weapons. Really, it’s just a way for the kids to have fun and resolve whatever petty grudges they’re holding on to.
(There’s a faculty betting pool. Glynda always wins.)
I’m gonna say they hand out normal paintball weapons rather than risk anyone coating a sword in paint and attacking someone who had their aura down, but like, weapons with some commonality to their regular ranged options. Ruby would still have a sniper rifle, Yang a shotgun, etc.
If you don’t typically have a ranged weapon, or have one that’s not a gun (i.e. dust exclusive) you basically get your pick.
Last year’s winner was Velvet Scarlatina — after several hours of working together to snipe unsuspecting students from the rooftops, she betrayed her partner Fox Alistair by literally shooting him in the back. He’s never shut up about it.

Oscar’s Role in the Finale
I think team RWBY and anyone willing to help will have to get the rest of the relics and bring them together. Tell the gods that the mess they’ve left for the rest of humanity isn’t fair to anyone. Oscar is gonna have to hold Ozma back because he’s scared to death of the brothers grimm. It would give Oscar a huge role to play in suppressing Ozma to help the team, but I fear it also might sideline him if Ozma takes the wheel and they gotta have him locked away temporarily while they get this done.
Tumblr media
Hopefully Ozma would put trust in Oscar and the rest of team RWBY, but the above is me throwing darts at a board in the case that he doesn’t or is too scared & has doubts or something.
