I don't even know why I've been so awful lately. I didn't mean to say awful I meant to say like, sensitive. But not sensitive either because I don't really feel bad. I've just been like Was this thing I said odd and weird and cringe and repulsive and execution-worthy or am I normal and everyone still likes me/is ambivalent at best towards me. Now that I've got something for most of the pages, I need a new metric for recording progress on the Sam comic, so

Pages with panel layout finalised: 19/24 (nearly 20, one has a bunch of small panels piled on top of each other that'll be easier to plan digitally but the rest of the page is done)

Pages with text placement (roughly, subject to future tweaking) figured out: 12 and several halves

Panels properly thumbnailed: 31 (out of 79 currently laid out across those 20 pages, best guess is that there'll be just over 100 total once I've got all the page layouts done)

So I'm nearly a third of the way there, which is further along than I thought I was! I'm getting the easy panels out of the way first, admittedly, but still, making solid progress.

i was wondering if you have any theories on where black and white thinking “comes from” in autism. like, i believe RSD is not some built-in symptom of anything but is instead a common trauma response for people with disabilities like adhd and autism, and i wonder if the black and white thinking in autism has a similar “source”, or if we can distinguish the “source” at all?

You're on to something here, I think! I think it likely is due to being overwhelmed with stimuli at all times, each of piece of stimuli being of an unknown degree of relevance, which then leaves us desperately craving for the world to be reducible to a set of simple, parsable rules. In much the same way that many Autistics cope with sensory overwhelm by grounding ourselves in repetitive, heavy, strong stimuli that is predictable and can drown the rest of the noise out (listening to heavy, bass-thumping music for example, or slapping ourselves in the head), we seek out strong, consistent, reliable rulesets for understanding the world that allow us (we think) to ignore all the social and sensory noise that we find so hard to parse in our interactions. And we wind up being susceptible to cults and fringe ideological groups or to freaking out when our worldview is challenged in an argument as a result.

The two books of Magic Encyclopedia (1992 for Volume One and 1993 for Volume Two, not to be confused with the later, actually useful four-volume Encyclopedia Magica) are exactly the sort of books that made folks complain about things like bloat and TSR just wanting to shake down their players for their allowance money. I don’t disagree.

These are alphabetically arranged catalogs of all the magic items in D&D up to that point, collected by type. So, “necklace,” and “diadem,” and so on. Each item type is accompanied by a small illustration and a brief description, in case you weren’t sure what a tabard is. This is the lone useful thing the book does.

Following the item type description, all the specific magic items are listed out, followed by a code that allows you to cross reference the publication their description is in. None of the specific magic items or their effects are described here. This is not an encyclopedia. This is an index. And I know I have said in the past that I adore an index, but this? This is insulting.

What’s worse, the code isn’t easily parsable, like “Players Handbook Page 10.” They just used the product codes. That’s easy for some, perhaps. S1 is easy — that’s Tomb of Horrors. In a million years, I couldn’t tell you what product 8891 is (the index tells me it is the 1991 Dragonlance calendar — are you telling me they had magic items in the calendars?!). I have an above-average working knowledge of TSR’s product line and I can’t be fucked to try and use this as a reference. I mean damn. Under the credit box in Volume One is the line, “God, forgive us for what we have done to your world.” I can only take that to me that even the TSR team knew they were messing up with this one.

I like the Fred Fields cover for Volume One. The Caldwell on Volume Two isn’t a fave and it is recycled from a Dragon Magazine.

I figured out how to make Miro not bad to look at. but I'm undecided if he's getting his skort back rn.

some new guys I've been fussing with. I'm still figuring everything out but their story is basically "what if meeting your soulmate was normally a swift death sentence, but you defied the culture around you and had a long love affair Before killing each other"

the tldr on the situation is that there was a god who couldn't decide what to do with this species they created. and they argued with themselves about it so much they eventually split down the middle. The two gods decided to split the species down the middle too, with each god taking half and shaping them in their image of what the perfect species and culture looked like.

but the gods didn't like, say "here's 50 out of a hundred individuals, I'll take the other 50" they split each person in half and took the halves that aligned most with their philosophy. And then made the two new species do war over it to try and prove which is better.

If one half finds their match they can kill them to become whole again, which makes them more powerful and betterer or whatever.

Anyways once upon a time one of the snake guy's cursed all the pig guys to begin choking on plants that grew in their throats as soon as they met their match. To like, give the smaller snake guy's a chance to escape the encounter alive or to kill the pig to take their power.

that didn't work. it basically just made it extremely obvious when a match met and made the non choking pig guys grab which ever snake guys were closest to try and save their friend. thus making the pig guys get a lot more kills.

Anyways these two are a prince and a high ranking military guy (very different systems of government) who met during a hostage exchange. Stellan started choking to death, Miro's guards and what not tried to protect him from the pigs trying to save Their buddy. Miro couldn't stand the idea of watching someone die because of him and escaped his guards to go soothe Stellan's choking. He knows it's likely to be a lethal mistake but he's soft hearted and just. Couldn't let someone die for him (plus it would have Really wrecked some of the non violent negotiations between the two species)

A pig guys choking can be soothed just by having their match near them. The curse needed to drop off when the snake makes the pig part of themselves after all.

Stellan recognizes the kindness in Miro's action and instead of killing him, he just holds him close while they do the hostage trade, at the end of it he tells miro to call for his healer and Miro does. Stellan is going to cut one of Miro's hands off and keep it to soothe his curse without having to kill Miro. Miro agrees to the deal and the healer helps make it as painless as possible.

Miro still passes out over the sight of blood.

Stellan leaves and later notices that the hand he took from Miro moves like it was still attached, and like Miro could feel him messing with it. Stellan likes that and it ends up becoming a comfort to him beyond just saving him from choking to death.

Derek is going to be 4 soon (Christmas Baby Derek 4ever), and Stiles turned 3 this year. They're friends because their moms often spend their days together — Talia's the Mayor and Claudia's the District Attorney. They're both busy women, and so are their families. John's busy being grilled under the current Sheriff, and all the Hales except Nana Hale have one or the other thing going on.

That means that Derek, as the youngest currently (Cora hasn't been born yet), is left to be babysat by Nana most days. Thing is, Nana Hale only speaks Spanish, so Derek only knows how to speak and understand Spanish. It's alright because as a werewolf he's anyways homeschooled, and the whole pack speaks Spanish so it's not a big deal.

On the other hand, John and Claudia are pretty much on their own, and quite busy making the best of their respective careers. Still, they manage to find time to be good parents, somehow. As John's job is more on-the-field and thus dangerous, Stiles spends most of his time with Claudia in her office.

Thing is, Claudia and John speak in English outside, and do try to speak in English with Stiles because he's gotta learn, he'll soon go to school. But they're more comfortable speaking in Polish, and it slips out more often than not, even when they promise each other to not do it because of Stiles. And Stiles? He understands English, a little bit, but he's speaking Polish like a pro.

Lo and behold the few days where both Talia and Claudia have to take their sons to work with them, and these two, despite the language barrier, become best friends. Now I'm not sure if there's any common words between the two languages, but I do imagine little Stiles and little Derek speaking pretty fast to each other, hoping the other understands them, and then both reaching for the same toy they were saying, "I'll play with that!"

Talia and Claudia think there's about to be a fight.

They're wrong.

Derek's eyebrows, entirely their own language, somehow becomes instinctually parsable to Stiles, who babbles in Polish something along the lines of, "You can have it! Take the wolf, I'll take the fox!"

And he does just that. Derek beams, and decides sharing while playing is better, anyways.

Fast forward to their teenage years, their families and friends are tired and sick of hearing a new language every week.

One week Stiles will be talking to Derek in Spanish, while Derek replies in French.

Next week Derek would be cursing Stiles out in Russian, while Stiles would be begging for forgiveness in Sanskrit.

Another week, Stiles would be flirting with Derek in Latin ("it's a dead language! how??" — everyone that knows them), while Derek would be blushing and mumbling sweet affections in Polish.

It is only when they speak to others that they speak in English. To each other, though? Derek really captured it best in their toddlerhood: sharing is better; so, they share new languages with each other.

there's not a correct or even parsable thought contained within this entire thing, it's almost impressive. I guess I applaud you for not going the usual routes for my anon hate (the ynbaws, the "you hate trans men"s, the people being weird about my girlfriend), but you have gone in a direction I cannot understand so I do have to dock you points.
