Original or Remake pt. 1: Summary

The Stories we tackled were: The Little Mermaid, Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians and it's sequels, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, The Parent Trap, Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent, and Cinderella

Thank you to everyone who voted in the polls, shared and liked the polls, and added their own personal accounts! Below is a bit more detailed de-brief of the nine polls.

The top three stories most people voted on were Alice in Wonderland with over 500 votes then The Parent Trap and The Little Mermaid with over 300 each!

All of the Animated versions out preformed the Live Action. What is unique is the 101 sequels: Patch's London Adventure was the stand alone winner, but when adding "mostly" and full preferences together, Glenn Close's 102 takes the crown. The only remake which outright won was the Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap--perhaps that's because so few people knew there were two????

Looking at the numbers, 4 of the polls had a plurality winner: 101 sequels, The Parent Trap, Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent, and Cinderella. (Meaning none of the options surpassed 50% of the votes)

Pretty much all of the stories were loved in one form or another. Which makes sense because our sample size is biased. The most beloved story was Sleeping Beauty/Maleficent--only one person voted against them! However, the least liked story was Dumbo, with 15% of votes against it. Not even an hour after posting people called out the casual racism of 1941.

Aladdin and The Little Mermaid also have stage adaptations which a small percentage of y'all prefer. Guess we'll have to get Broadway tickets for whichever Disney productions we can if we ever get to NYC.

And speaking of Aladdin...The poor Live Action! We very rarely have a poll option no one votes for. We would like to assume that the preference for the Animated version is testament to Robin Williams and the other great performers instead of a general active dislike of the live action. Side note: "The Animated!" on this one was the highest percentage (82.9) any of the options got while the same option for Alice in Wonderland was the most individual votes (275).

We also wanted to note: we kept tabs over the week on the percentages for some of these polls. And what is interesting is that after the initial few hours, the polls would fall into their pattern. Like the Animated Little Mermaid kept around 66% the whole week. And almost a quarter of people liked both 101 Dalmatians movies the same through out. Although, we are happy to say Hayley Mills managed to grab a bit more vote share in the second half!

We are planning to do a second part of these polls in a few months as we gather submissions for the next big tournament we host.

okay so a while back I mentioned I was really unhappy with the older designs I had for the pines twins, so I decided to completely re-do them. not sure why I didn't give them both glasses in the first place honestly. hey have you noticed how often I just draw characters standing in a white empty space

Death in Ninjago is funny because it (by nature of it being a kid's show and them being shown as Legos) can't usually show people being stabbed or killed by weapons. The characters have to die in either one piece or in so many unrecognizable pieces, but that often leads to some horrifying implications.

Like of course we can't show Zane fully blowing up when he dies, but we can have there be nothing to bury other than a piece of his faceplate!

Harumi died in a building that crumbled around her and was resurrected on the ground floor crushed by a piece of the building's support. No blood, so it's a-okay!

The show can fully show Morro's corpse because it's an intact and silly-looking skeleton, but it also implies he died because of a cave-in got him stuck in an area that quickly filled with a highly flammable gas, which would've been an awful way to go.

Lloyd was fully crushed by a door, which is definitely on the list of bad deaths that would hurt like hell. But he's in one piece and gets resurrected, so it's fine; everything's all good.

Or you could be unlucky enough to be Mr. E and be torn into six different pieces on screen. But he's a robot so it's fine.

Stanley and Sixer!

Sent to Gravity Falls to live with a great aunt they barely know with no warning, the twins have… slightly different reactions. Stanley is not at all impressed with the idea of kicking it around some backwater town for a summer when they could've been working on the Stan o' War. Stanford is also put-out, but is optimistic about finding fun in documenting interesting things in the woods. Their attitudes pick up even more when they discover a spellbook lost in the woods that teaches them that Gravity Falls is full of weirdness and adventure. They both want to discover the two Authors of the spellbook, though each has a secret favorite author they want to meet in particular.

Stanley: With his brash yet suspicious personality, he finds his fun in looking for monsters in the woods with the hopes of beating them up and making a name for himself--a stance the creatures of Gravity Falls don't appreciate much. He feels a growing distance between himself and Stanford and has no idea what to do with it or how to talk to his twin about it, so he masks it with bravado and charm. He constantly thinks of ways to make himself important and interesting, which often blow up in his face. Thinks he's cooler than he really is.

Stanford, aka Sixer: Once he realized that Gravity Falls is a town full of weirdness, Stanford was thrilled by the thought that it might be a blessing in disguise, a place to finally branch out and make friends who won't run once they see his hands. He really, really wants to make friends with anomalies, like one of the sirens that supposedly live in the lake or the boy who claims to be a psychic. This goal combined with his trusting nature might lead him down dangerous paths. At least he has Stanley to help him! Though lately it feels like Stanley has been less honest and more clingy than usual, and it's starting to grate on him...

While Dipper and Ford are paralleled in the show, I feel like Ford as a child would have an attitude that parallels Canon Mabel's better in terms of inciting the plot. They're both enthusiastic to the point of being Too Much, intense, and often convinced they're right above what others think, and I just feel like him having a quest to find friends takes the place of Mabel's quest for a boyfriend very well. Meanwhile this Stanley has the skeptical but investigative attitude of Canon Dipper, and I could see him being the type to want to prove himself a la Dipper vs Manliness, provoking people he really shouldn't provoke in the name of showing who he can be.

Full disclosure, these are not on the same plot and it is a bit like comparing apples and pumpkins (but we did 101 yesterday so...)
