So I really like this post, I'm Autistic, ADHD, and OCD, just for context, and like...people don't realize that when you have a mental illness, pathologizing your behavior and proceeding to write off bad behavior as a product of your illness creates the perfect environment in your mind to continue to behave in shitty ways in perpetuity, and treat your maladaptive or otherwise harmful behaviors as something inherent and immutable in your being that just can't be helped and that's a total cop out, because behavior is malleable and changeable, and thinking in this way doesn't lend any room for you to grow and change for the better in any way, and telling that story to yourself is also very self defeating and pitiful, not even saying that in a judgemental way, because at some point, you gotta face the demons in your own mind and learn how to handle them

And no...handling them does not mean brutally punishing and chastising yourself endlessly until you stop doing the behavior, all that's gonna do is make the behavior persist AND make you feel super guilty for even behaving that way in the first place, further feeding that darkness and making it grow to more unstable and more uncontrollable. if being hard on yourself worked, it would've worked by now.

Try something else.

You have to show yourself kindness and grace first, you have to be aware of where your hurt is, and you have to cry it out to release some of that unstable energy from your soul, you have to get real with your darkness, love it in all it's filth and ugly, and it will become smaller and more manageable

I've always loved the day 11 conversation with Maria in her mother's tomb (in the Bachelor's route). In English, she says: "This is what differentiates a utopia from a dream. There is a 'top' in 'utopia', but don't let the word deceive you: it's all about what's down below. It requires dirt. A ruby firmament needs something to sit atop-otherwise it'd topple."

Obviously, it's really word play-ey, and that same word play doesn't exist in Russian. In Russian, the word for utopia is (as we all know) "утопия," but here, "топ" is a letter off from "топь," which essentially means "marsh." In English, the line is: "This is why it's a utopia, not a dream. It even sounds similar to the word 'marsh' (топ). It needs dirt. The ruby ​​sky mingles with the marshland (торфяным)."

I think it's interesting that the English translation was forced to create its own sentences in service to Maria's philosophy, and even went further with the puns. I would say that many of the differences between the two texts are like this.

Bo Laurent created the Intersex Society of North America in 1993, starting the intersex rights movement in the United States. Describing the founding of ISNA, they wrote:

ISNA now connects hundreds of intersexuals across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. It has also begun sponsoring an annual intersex retreat, the first of which took place in 1996 and which moved participants every bit as profoundly as the New Woman conference had moved me in 1993.

ISNA's longer-term and more fundamental goal, however, is to change the way intersex infants are treated. We advocated that surgery not be performed on ambiguous genitals unless there is a medical reason (such as blocked or painful urination), and that parents be given the conceptual tools and emotional support to accept their children's physical differences...To provide a counterpoint to the mountains of medical literature that neglect intersex experience and to begin compiling an ethnographic account of that experience, ISNA's Hermaphrodites with Attitude newsletter has developed into a forum for intersexuals to tell their own stories.

...When I established ISNA in 1993, no such politicized groups existed. I was less willing to think of intersexuality as a pathology or disability, more interested in challenging its medicalization entirely, and more interested still in politicizing a pan-intersexual identity across the divisions of particular etiologies in order to destabilize more effectively the heteronormative assumptions underlying the violence directed at our bodies."

I have another piece of translation trivia for you pathologic nutsos

In English, on the night of day 3, Artemy can mention to Lara that he "Served as a medic for a while", refering to his brief military service.

He doesn't say "medic", or even "combat medic" in Russian. He uses the word Фельдшер, or Feldsher, which is a very specific thing.

A Feldsher is (or rather was) a mid-level (that is, without university education) medical practitioner. They don't have the same authority as doctors, but can perform certain operations or diagnostics. Historically, it was a non-combative position in the Russian Army and fleet. They even made a labor union in 1905!

It gives historical context to the entire setting, because Feldshers are mostly assossiated with the late 19th to early 20th century - the term is anachronistic (I guess that's why it was omitted in English) Edit: The term is still generally used in Russia, as pointed out in the comments, though the current and historical meaning are slightly different. We still have some Feldshers in Poland, as the only country in the EU where that position is legally recognized.

It also makes so much sense, given Artemy's situation - he never finished university but did have some prior knowlegde, so it would be reasonable for him to serve, as it was a common practice back then.

Allow me to impart a small piece of the knowledge of my degree

Phonemes are speech sounds! The specific sound that an individual letter or combination of letters ( think sh) makes.

I don’t know exactly when he said it but I believe he said once that he had speech therapy because he mumbled and possibly stuttered as a little kid. The stutter would have been a whole different thing but the mumbling they would have taught him to articulate his letters more precisely, and speak louder and slower.

The best example of some drilled sounds was the radio from last year ( someone who knows tell me what race and I’ll edit this post) where he said “ I’m trying to pick up some rubber but all I can find is leaves.”

The l, r, v, s, th, and sh ( and sometimes his p, t, and k) are consonants that he often enunciates very precisely, like he may have been taught to focus on them specifically in speech therapy. These are all common sounds worked on in articulation therapy with little kids, as most kids struggle with them but grow out of it on their own without the need for therapy ( that’s called a phonological process and it’s totally normal and expected when you’re young.) Though, as is common in Brits, there are a few final consonants that he deletes entirely ( Rs at the ends of words in particular ( look at the word rubber in that quote and how the initial r is precise but the final r is not really even there) ( the same way Lando says “ Oscah” instead of Oscar that we all find so endearing)

I love the way he talks, it’s adorable! And obviously I am not his Speech Language Pathologist and I don’t know what his therapy goals were, these are just my observations and guesses. This kinda turned into a ramble lol but thanks for the ask!! I loved talking about it!

i've been learning Latin recently; I know just a tiny bit of grammar and a few words, but i've memorized some expressions, and i fully understand Dankovsky now. Like, I add them to my speech without no important reason, it feels so cool-dark-academic-bachelor-core, I just can't resist the urge. Why not? Dicendo dicere discis! Another thing I understand about Dankovsky is why do others react to him like that. Do you even know how many phrases does it take to annoy your friends? Hint: less than you'd expect! Oh, and I have a friend who is probably a prototype of Artemy, as he answers me in a sign language which I don't know. That's an interesting linguistic experience, after all...

I just learned this bc i keep refreshing the quarantine page to see the fated hour get closer and closer (I'm stupid and should just go to sleep)

i so wonder what they'll call the Changeling.

In the patho classic Italian translation they called her la Devota iirc bc it was based on the 2005 English translation (where she's called the Devotress). And they did NOT update it for the classic hd release lmao. Which means the translation started ok and gradually descended into complete madness, with double the errors, because that's always a danger when you're translating things from something that's ALREADY a translation and not knowing the context (one example is bicchieri becoming occhiali - yeah they're both glasses in English but the former is what you use to drink and the later is what you wear when you can't see). And that's also the reason why I'm replaying patho classic hd in English, lol. Flawed translation and all, but unfortunately I do not speak Russian.

Patho 2 was not officially translated to Italian altho iirc there's a couple of fan translations attempts that may or may not be finished. In one I saw her being called "Trovatella" which I'd translate as "lost orphan" if I had to keep the vibe. Very interesting poetic license which I like on one end bc very fairytale vibe and don't like on the other because it does NOT carry the same negative implication of the original word

I do think "Changeling" is a perfect word to describe the original Russian feeling i think. Perfect mix of meaning and a dash of weird fairytale vibe, wich fits pathologic to a T.

An accurate to the original Russian equivalent that also carries the fantastical vibe of Changeling doesn't exist in Italian, I'm afraid. The closest thing to the original word would be Impostora but it's ugly as all hell. Maybe they'll just stick with Changeling as in the English word, or maybe they'll find a similar mythical figure to apply her to. I just hope they don't call her Devota again because it means jack shit.

Anyway. I love translations. I'm very passionate about all the thought and adaptation that is behind a localization. I just wish they called someone who could translate directly from the Russian text instead of the English one, but it's way easier to find people who know English than Russian.

And if they just Google translated the whole thing I'll just go ballistic.
