Dialysis

Dialysis is kind of like having a machine be your kidneys. The purpose of dialysis are the following:

 Rids the body of fluid excess and electrolyte excess

 Eliminates toxins that the kidneys have not been able to filter out

 Achieves acid-base balance

So if its doing the jobs of your kidneys, then you know one more thing: its for people with kidney malfunction. So what are some diseases this is indicated for?!

Kidney Disease

Acute Kidney Injury

Kidney Cancer

There are two different types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis sends blood through the dialyzer and then back into the body. 

Peritoneal Dialysis instills a hypertonic dialysate solution into the peritoneal cavity. It then drains and removes the waste products. 

So for hemodialysis, here are some nursing interventions you need to remember:

You need informed consent.

Assess the patency of the fistula.

Do not measure BP in affected extremity. 

Palpate the thrill!! Or as I love saying... feel the thrill!

Have protamine sulfate at hand to reverse heparin if needed. 

If nausea, dizziness, and headache occur, tell the pt to notify you or the doctor. 

Weights before and after. 

Here are your interventions for peritoneal dialysis:

Daily weights!

Monitor electrolytes!

Inform the client that they might feel fullness during the procedure.

Keep the outflow bag lower than the client’s abdomen.

Report cloudy dialysate! Its indicative of infection!

These are some simple tips about dialysis but just remember the basics. Unless you are going to be a dialysis nurse, this is what you need to know. :)

चैतन्य भारत न्यूज  वाशिंगटन. मेडिकल साइंस के क्षेत्र में डॉक्टरों ने एक और बड़ी सफलता हासिल की है। अब डॉक्टर ने एक ऐसी तकनीक बनाई है जिससे पेरिटोनियल (पेट का एक बड़ा भाग) डायलिसिस की प्रक्रिया सरल हो जाएगी। इस बार एक ऐसी पहनने योग्य कृत्रिम किडनी बनाई गई है, जो खुद ही काम करती है। यह कृत्रिम किडनी पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस के दौरान मरीज के खून से विषाक्त पदार्थों को बाहर निकालने में बेहद प्रभावकारी साबित हुई। (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); मरीज खुद कर सकेगा अपना डायलिसिस अमेरिका की राजधानी वाशिंगटन डीसी के वाल्टर ई. वाशिंगटन कंवेंशन सेंटर में एएसएन किडनी वीक आयोजित हुआ जिसमें इस शोध अध्ययन को प्रस्तुत किया गया। शोधकर्ता एडब्ल्यूएके नामक पहनने योग्य इस कृत्रिम किडनी की पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस में उपयोगिता की संभावनाओं को लेकर परीक्षण में जुटे हैं। यदि अंतिम रूप में यह तकनीक सफल हो जाती है तो फिर पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस में काफी बदलाव आएगा। जानकारी के मुताबिक, इसके जरिए न सिर्फ डायलिसिस में लगने वाला समय बहुत कम हो जाएगा, साथ ही डायलिसिस से पहले होने वाली लंबी थेरेपी और बड़ी मशीनों को एक साथ जोड़ने की मुसीबत से भी छुटकारा मिल जाएगा। खास बात यह है कि इसके जरिए मरीज खुद ही अपना डायलिसिस कर सकेगा। 15 मरीजों पर कई बार किया गया प्रयोग एडब्ल्यूएके (कृत्रिम किडनी) में एक सॉर्बेंट-आधारित पुनर्योजी तकनीक का इस्तेमाल किया गया है। बता दें सॉर्बेंट एक तरह का अवशोषित (Absorbed) करने वाली सामग्र्री है। इस तकनीक के जरिए इस्तेमाल किए गए डायलिसिस द्रव (फ्लूड) से विषाक्त पदार्थों को बाहर निकाल कर उसे पुनर्जीवित और पुनर्गठित कर उसे फिर से ताजे द्रव में बदला जा सकता है। इस तकनीक का प्रयोग 15 मरीजों पर कई बार किया गया है। इलाज के महीनेभर बाद तक भी मरीजों पर किसी तरह का गंभीर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव नहीं देखने को मिला। साथ ही उनके खून से भी अपशिष्ट पदार्थ बाहर निकल गए। इलाज हो जाएगा आसान सिंगापुर जनरल हॉस्पिटल के प्रबंध निदेशक और प्रधान जांचकर्ता मरजोरी फू वाइ विन ने बताया कि, एडब्ल्यूएके पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस में इस्तेमाल की गई पुनर्योजी सॉर्बेंट तकनीक नई है। यदि यह तकनीक पूरी तरह से सफल हो जाती है तो फिर पिछले 40 सालों से चले आ रहे पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस के तरीके में व्यापक बदलाव आएगा। इसके जरिए इलाज बहुत आसान भी हो जाएगा। साथ ही फ्लूड के दोबारा इस्तेमाल किए जाने से संसाधन भी बचेंगे। किडनी के काम बंद करने पर पड़ती है डायलिसिस की जरूरत आपको बता दें किडनी का काम शरीर से अपशिष्ट और अतिरिक्त तरल पदार्थ को बाहर निकालकर खून को साफ करना होता है। जब व्यक्ति की किडनी काम करना बंद कर देती है तो उसे डायलिसिस की जरूरत पड़ती है। यानी कि कृत्रिम तरीके से रक्त को साफ किया जाता है। पेरिटोनियल डायलिसिस प्रक्रिया में शरीर से अपशिष्ट और अतिरिक्त पदार्थों को हटाने के लिए एक प्लास्टिक ट्यूब के माध्यम से रोगी के पेट के गुहा में तरल पदार्थ रखा जाता है। फिल्टर के तौर पर काम करने के लिए यह मरीज के शरीर के ऊतकों (Tissues) का उपयोग करता है।   Read the full article

Doctors strongly recommend avoiding water based activities for those of us on peritoneal dialysis because our catheter is our dialysis access or in other words, our lifeline. Water in lakes, rivers, pools and even the ocean can contain bacteria that could cause a really bad infection called peritonitis which could result in us losing the ability to perform this type of dialysis or even worse, death. So... as I start my Dialysis ‘journey’, I start my blog story too. I have always found writing therapeutic and a way of coping with stress and anxiety, so as the countdown begins to be fitted for a PD (Peritoneal Dialysis) Catheter, i’m sure having an outlet for all the emotions I will be feeling will help!
